Lighting you dolls house using the copper tape wiring method

Lighting your dolls house can be one of the most rewarding aspects of building and owning a dolls house. The use of working lights, fires and even televisions can really add life to your house and make it a centre piece of the room in which it is housed. The use of copper tape to light your dolls house is just one of the methods that can be used (others will be discussed in future articles). This method uses thin strips of self adhesive copper tape to conduct electricity around your house. The first stage is to decide on the location of your dolls house lights. The socket should be removed from the end of each light and a small hole drilled to allow the wire to pass through (in this case to the back of the house). For ceiling light the hole should be drilled through the ceiling into the room upstairs and then out of the back of this room. This way wires can be covered over with carpeting etc. For wall lights that are not on the back wall these too can be trailed up the wall and then out to the back from the room above (small groves can be made in the walls to hide the wire and keep a smooth surface for decorating). Next we need to decide on the position of the copper tape. For a front opening dolls house this would be the back of the house. The copper tape is laid down in two strips that run parallel to each other (they must not touch or they will short circuit). Where the copper tape overlaps use masking tape between the two tapes to insulate. Tape should be positioned so that the lighting wires can be easily connected and so that the wire creates a circuit. Once the light has been installed the wire on the outside should be cut to the appropriate length to allow connection to the copper tape without lots of excess wire. To connect the wire to the copper tape separate the wire into two strands, strip the plastic coating off and solder one to either side of the copper tape circuit taking care that the copper cores do not touch. Plug in the transformer and check that each light is working as you go – don’t wait till the end to try a figure out which light isn’t working! While creating lighting circuit for your dolls house is relatively straight forward it should be remembered that we are working with an electrical circuit and must follow safe practices. Remember to always use the correct transformer for the job and NEVER connect straight to the mains.

Look to the sea with dolphin figurines the friendly creatures will fill you with warmth

Imagine the chattering with dolphin figurines in your curio cabinet or display case! The grace and charm of the dolphin shows through in the smooth lines of crystal in dolphin figurines. These figurines come in all shapes and sizes showing dolphins in various poses. You can also have dolphin figurines custom made according to your specifications and in the percentage of lead crystal that you want. When you order a crystal dolphin figurine, it is hand blown by experienced glass blowers that have learned the craft from their ancestors. Dolphin figurines that are made to order are unique and one of a kind. If you are a collector, this will be one of the most treasured crystal dolphin figurines that you own. The brilliance of crystal in these figurines will remind you of the sunlight sparkling on the waters as the dolphins frolic and play in the waves. Sailors have long told stories about dolphins leading ships through dangerous waters. When you have dolphin figurines, you may also be looking to the dolphin to protect your home and family, if you have a superstitious nature. For most people who collect crystal dolphin figurines, they want them simply because of their beauty and the ambiance they bring to any room. Try a duet of crystal dolphins poised to jump out of the water. Dolphin figurines have always held a place in different cultures, especially those of the South Seas Islands. A lot of dolphin artwork has been found in ancient tombs telling us that the ancient people held the dolphin in high esteem. A crystal dolphin figurine crafted from Austrian crystal is an elegant piece to add to your collection. A mini dolphin figurine standing only 2.5 inches high next to a larger one will give the appearance of being a dolphin baby. Guests will Ooh and Ahh over such tiny figurines. Svorski crystal dolphin figurines are truly jewels of the sea. Dolphin figurines crafted from this crystal will be gifts that you will treasure for a lifetime and will likely become family heirlooms. Although crystal looks good when it reflects the sunlight, you should not have it places where it will be in direct exposure of sunlight for long periods of time. A light dusting of your dolphin figurines will keep them looking their best and if you do need to wash them use lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Crystal does not react well to the rigors of a dishwasher, so you should keep your collectible figurines out of this environment.

Lost your cell phone the benefits of cell phone lanyards

As the use of cell phones becomes increasingly popular, so does the use of cell phone lanyards to keep them from being misplaced. The cell phone lanyard is also a great way to keep a cell phone readily available without having to physically carry it. The lanyards are typically made of cord, rope or wire. They can be connected to a backpack, belt loop or purse. To keep a cell phone easily accessible it may be most convenient to wear a cell phone lanyard around the neck, keeping the hands free. When worn around the neck, the typical cell phone lanyard, measures 36 inches long but can be custom designed to any length. To secure the cell phone to the lanyard, simply pull the lanyard through the lanyard hole that can be found on most cell phones. Other cell phone lanyards have a nylon cord attached to the end that can be pulled through the lanyard hole. Although born of necessity, the cell phone lanyard does not have to be boring. There are many styles, colors and materials to choose from. Custom printing can display a favorite slogan, symbol or saying. Many talented artists will design you a unique beaded cell phone lanyard to coordinate with a favorite outfit, pair of shoes, as well as your automobile. Choice of beading includes gemstones, pewter beads, Swarovski crystals and even diamonds.

    Make a painted christmas card

: Arts and crafts is a tool that provides you with unlimited creativity, patience, skill sets and a whole lot of fun. Many times, people don’t know or they feel ignorant as how to make something decorative, creative and beautiful and as such there are different craft books available to guide you for making a particular craft. If it is the much awaited Christmas time and you want to send some beautiful Christmas cards to your friends and relatives then why to purchase an expensive card from the market instead you can paint a Christmas card at your home that shall have a personal touch too. To craft a painted Christmas card, you need to have a white blank card, green acrylic paint, gold liquid marker, gold glitter paint, silver glitter paint, calligraphy pen, black calligraphy ink, red calligraphy ink, water, paper towel, yellow marker, grey marker, red glitter paint, green glitter paint. Steps to create a painted Christmas card: 1. First mix enough water with small amount of green acrylic paint to create a thin wash and thoroughly mix it. 2. Dip your brush in the wash and paint the front of the card in straight brush strokes. You have to cover the card with the wash as quickly as possible as so the stokes of your paint brush won’t show and the card has a nice even coat of the wash being created. After you finish the wash you need to blot up the excess wash from the front of your card completely. Let your card dry and then place a new piece of paper towel over the card and place a heavy book on top of the card so that it dries flat.

This is necessary so that it is flat before you draw on your design. 3. Draw your design on the front of the card lightly with a pencil and then draw a faint line where you could writer your own words. 4. Once you are satisfied with the design, assign colors to each part and trace over these parts with the help of markers of the chosen colors.

These colors should correspond with the paint colors that you shall use on the parts of the design later. 5. Trace over the thin lines that you drew for the words with the liquid gold marker. Let it dry and then test it by pressing a paper on the line and lift it carefully to check whether it had dried. 6. With the help of the red calligraphy pen write the words “Merry Christmas” on the gold line you have created. Practice on another sheet of paper if you feel necessary.

You can also cover your words with a small piece of paper to blot it while you continue to decorate your card. 7. You can trace the design with glitter paint and then using the fine tip of the bottle or pen trace around the parts of the design in their respective colors such as yellow-gold, silver-silver, red-red, green-green. To spread the paint around the thinner than the lines created by the tips of the bottles or pens you are using just smear it with the help of a toothpick.

    8. Next change the color of the calligraphy pen to black and write a message inside the card as well. Practice it on a separate piece of paper and then place a paper towel over the ink to blot so that it does not bleed to other side of the card before it dries. You can also let it dry standing up and open.

Make a recycled cd valentine hanging

: Art and crafts is something that allows you to improve your skills and at the same time you can also make the best use of something that would otherwise be thrown out somewhere else. Here some tips are being given so that you can easily make a valentine hanging made from recycled CD’s. You need to have 3 CD’s, 4 red heart paper doily of 6” each, 1 sheet of red construction paper 9” * 12”, Moroccan red opaque acrylic paint, ј” red satin ribbon, wood curtain ring, white craft glue and newspapers. 1. First you need to spread out some newspaper on your work surface. Lay the three CDs on the newspaper and squeeze some of the red acrylic paint into the yogurt container. Paint a thick coat of paint onto the first side of the three CD’s. Let them dry completely. 2. When the paint takes its time to dry you can make the cupid portion of this craft. Then draw or trace a cupid shape onto a piece of construction paper.

Then cut it out without any of the lines showing and set it aside. 3. Now turn the three CD’s over and paint the other side with a thick coat of paint and let it dry completely. 4. When the paint on the second side is dry, it is the time to add the doilies and the cupid to the CD’s. The doilies are large enough to cover the entire surface of a CD such that you can spread the glue on the entire surface of the two CD’s and then press a heart shaped doily down onto the CD. Smooth out the doily so that there are no bumps and if you do this way there should not be any such bumps or lines. When you get a doily ready on one side of the two CD’s repeat the process of gluing the other side of the CD. Spread a thin layer of glue between the portion of the doilies that extend past the edges of the CD and press the doilies together.

Repeat for the doilies on the second CD and rest the CD on top of a bottle to dry so that it doesn’t sticks to a surface. 5. Now arrange the cupid shape on one side of the remaining painted CD and when you are satisfied with the arrangement lift up the cupid shape, spread glue on the back of the cupid where it will come in contact with the CD and press it back into place, smoothing out nay wrinkles. 6. Measure and cut a 33” piece of the ribbon and lay it down on your work surface. Tie one end of the ribbon in a knot around the bottom of the curtain ring. Trim that end of the ribbon but it should not be too close to the knot or it will come undone.

You are however free to add a small drop of glue behind the knot to keep it secured. 7. Arrange the three CDs on top of it with an equal amount of space between each. The first CD with a heart doily on it should be arranged below the wood ring, the second CD below that and then the final CD. When you are satisfied with the arrangement, lift the CD’s up one at a time, squeeze a line of glue down the ribbon where it will touch the CD and press it back to the place.

Make sure that you have at least 4” of ribbon hanging down below the last CD. Let the glue dry completely before hanging. Visit craft-books. net

Make money creating wedding memorial scrapbooks

If you're familiar with creating scrapbooks then you have a work at home business waiting to be opened in your lap. Scrapbooks are a wonderful way to treasure wedding memories or the memories of a lost loved one. To create a wedding scrapbook for a client you will need to attend the wedding or reception in order to gather photographs and quotes from family and friends of the happy couple. For this you will need a digital camera and a small tape recorder or notepad. If the scrapbook is meant to be a memorial for someone you will need to gather photographs of the person from his or her relatives. Try to get photos from all phases of the person's life. Ask the friends and family of the person to recall their memories of their loved one. It would be best to use a tape recorder for this for accuracy. You don't want entire chapters about the person, just words he or she said or funny events that occurred in their life. Use the wedding's theme for the wedding scrapbook. Use items from the wedding in the scrapbook, pressed flowers, ribbons, and lace from the veil, the couple's vows, and even the groom's tie. This scrapbook will become a family treasure. You want the scrapbook to bring the wedding to life each time someone opens it. For the memorial scrapbook try to base the theme on the person being honored. What is the one personality trait or hobby or quirk of his or hers that the person's relatives remember best? Was the person a comedian, an avid fisher, or the scholarly type? Was the person a proud veteran? Maybe he or she was a community activist. Try to use small objects from the person's life in the scrapbook to personalize it, a bit of cloth from a favorite dress, favorite flowers, awards, the ugly tie a child bought for a dad's birthday or for Father's Day, school drawings made by the person's children. While performing either scrapbook service you must remember that discretion is of utmost importance. For example, leave out the embarrassing remark the bride's aunt made no matter how funny you may think it. Don't include an ugly quote or memory in the memorial scrapbook. Your clients won't appreciate it. To advertise your wedding scrapbook service create eye-catching business cards and brochures on your computer and leave them at bridal shops, at stores with wedding registries, and place ads in your local newspaper. You might try church bulletins boards as well, as long as the powers that be don't mind. For your memorial scrapbook service leave brochures at funeral homes, place newspaper ads, and leave your card with the ministers and priests in your town. Act with respect and discretion. In other words, don't hand out brochures at the funeral. When a client asks about your service it would be wise to have a scrapbook you've already made on hand that you can show the client to demonstrate your skill. Your client wants to know what he or she is getting in exchange for their hard-earned money. But how much should you charge? People are willing to pay well for a truly beautiful scrapbook of their memories. $50 to $100 isn't unreasonable for the work and time you put into the scrapbook. You could charge more for a really detailed wedding scrapbook. Charging more for a detailed memorial album would be up to you. But it might be wise to set a fixed price for memorial albums, for example $50 for a small album and $75 for a large album. You don't want to seem as if you're trying to gouge the mourning family as doing so could harm your business reputation. Treat the family with respect and do the finest job possible on their scrapbook. Soon word of your skill will spread to other people interested in having a memorial album created. Put your love for creating scrapbooks to work, and one day you can create a scrapbook about your successful business that you created one memory at a time.

    Make use of paper crafts

: Do you have an artistic hand that could create beautiful things with the help of paper? Then, you can make use of an arts and crafts book which will enable you to make amazing things by your own that too in a very short span of time. You can make beautiful 3D flowers to scrapbooks that shall preserve the life story of your family with the use of paper. If you buy these craft items from the market, they could cost you much but if you are making them right at your home you can easily save some money. Things you need to follow to save money for making the paper crafts are: 1. On occasions such as Christmas, New Year you can create gift tags or small gift boxes with the help of used greeting cards. You can also save by keeping the gift wrapping paper with you that could be used later elsewhere. 2. You can also find some used crafters online whereby you can keep an eye on purging ex crafters and get ready to cash in on your good fortune as soon as one has got tired of storing supplies. 3. While you are online, you need to watch the deals in disguise and never judge the book by its cover. There could be expensive book or photo album covers where you can save by buying an inexpensive album and then throw away the inside pages and fill it with your own pages fitted into plastic sleeves. You should also constantly look for ways to convert cheaper products in the ones you require.

    4. Always buy in bulk and then swap. This is because when you buy a product in bulk, it saves a lot of your money. Then you can get a gathering of your crafty friends and swap these items like the old barters way. 5. Never pay money for what you can get free. Patterns usually cost much for crafters and if you don’t buy patterns you can buy crafting magazines for more ideas. If you are even tired of these magazines, you can visit online and find out great ideas.

Making a child s hand print on a ceramic tile

This is a fun craft to do with a group of moms and their kids, one child per adult works the best. Each mom will need: ---One soft brush, any size but 1/2" works the best ---One tiny 1-ounce jar of "One-Stroke Ceramic underglaze", either Duncan E-Z Stroke or Gare One-Stroke. (Of course they can share these, but it's best if they have at least 3 colors to choose from. The best are a dark green, a dark blue or a dark brown. One jar of each color will do 50 hands altogether) ---One pint jar of "clear gloss glaze", which all can use. ---A sponge ---Paper towels and a washcloth ---One blank UNglazed ceramic tile, 4-1/4" (for kids 2 or 3 yrs. old or so) or 6" (for kids over 3) Unless you know someone who does hand-painted tile as a career, these would have to be ordered in cases of 100 or so. The best thing is to call the hobby ceramic stores, where you will get the underglaze and clear glaze, and ask if they have a "molded greenware or bisque tile they sell", and order the quantity you need. Tell them you would like them "fired to bisque." The most important thing is that the childrens' hands are scrubbed with soap and water, then dried well. Salt, sugar or oils on the hands will prevent the glaze from bonding with the tile. Make sure to wipe the tile well with a clean sponge in plain water. Allow to dry a few minutes. Tell the kids that it is like hand-painting only without wiggling their fingers. Make it fun, some get scared. Hold their clean hand gently over a tile to make sure their hand will fit, fingers spread out a little. Pick the right size tile and paint one wet coat of glaze across the flat of their open palm, not too runny but not too dry, follwing the instructions for mixing on the bottle. Try to keep their fingers from touching, the more still they keep their hand, the better the clarity. A good print will show fingerprints! But if it smears, it usually does, it's all for fun anyway. If it starts to become a battle with the child, let him go, when he sees the other kids having a good time he will offer his hand to be painted. (I say "he" because it is usually the boys that wimp out, the girls are more adventurous. lol) Make sure the paint goes all the way to the ends of the fingers and thumb and press the hand straight down onto the surface of the tile, quickly but gently and firmly, rolling the fingers slightly so the print doesnt look like skeleton fingers lol. Lift the hand straight up and see how cool! Wash their hands with soap, the paint is water soluable and non-staining, but dont let them lick it. With a fine brush, write the child's name and date or birthday or age right on the tile. Set it in a safe place to dry well. If you are nervous about smearing the dry glaze, have them fired at "cone 04" before painting the clear gloss on top. This is the proper way, but if the underglaze is good and dry and you are very careful, it is ok to put the clear glaze on unfired underglaze and fire the tile once at "cone 06" and the results will be the same. Either way, get the large floppy brush again and paint 3 thin coats of clear gloss on the tile and fire to "cone 06". You can buy frames from most ceramic stores that sell the tiles. They will last forever. Have fun!

    Making a twig wreath

This twig wreath makes a very attractive decoration for inside or outside and one in which you can take great pride. The materials which you will require are a wire coat hanger, craft wire, I like to use about a 22-24 gauge wire, twigs, I like to break them into five inch lengths, berries, dried flowers, pinecones, whatever seems right to you, you are the creator so you are the one to be pleased. Unless of course you are making it on order for a customer, then, you do your best to create what the customer wants, then if they are satisfied you will be too, because a satisfied customer is your very best advertisement. First bend the lower part of your coat hanger to form a circle; this will be the wreath base for your twig wreath. Next bend the hook part of your coat hanger into an oval; this will be the hanger by which you will hang your finished project. Cut several pieces of wire into six inch lengths. Next, take a small handful of twigs, whatever number looks right to you and wire them together, this is called making a “bunch”. Secure the end of the wire in such a way that no one will be apt to be stabbed at some future time. Make several other bunches the same way until you feel that you have enough bunches to cover the wreath base. Now take a bunch and wire it securely onto the wreath base. Take another bunch and being careful to overlap the first bunch so that the wire is covered, do the same thing. Repeat this over and over until your wreath base is finished. Tuck the last bunch of twigs underneath the first bunch to hide the wiring and fasten on. Clip the wire and tuck it in securely and as safely as possible, to avoid any potential injury. If you find that the first bunch is too inflexible to be maneuvered this way, don’t worry about it, you can just glue some of the flowers or other ornamental parts on in such a way that the wiring will be covered. Next take the berries, dried flowers, pinecones etc. and tuck them and glue them around on the wreath, placing them in areas that seem right to you. Let the glue dry and you will have a very attractive twig wreath which will make a lovely decoration for either inside or outside your home.

    Making dried flower wreaths

Dried flower wreaths can be especially beautiful and add that little bit of elegance to the interior of your home, or can be used as a door wreath, as you prefer. Personally I like to make them and hang them on a mirror of a buffet cabinet in the dining room or on a round wall mirror in the living room. I call these “grandmother’s” wreaths, because I choose to make them in the old fashioned way in which my grandmother made them. You will want to gather a bag full of “trimming” material, vines etc with leaves on them as well as fall flowers and lay them out to dry in a cool yet dry area, such as a garage. When your wreath making materials are completely dry, then you will be ready for the next step, the actual making of the wreath. You will want to cover your work area with newspapers to avoid messy cleanups as much as possible. I like to use a wire coat hanger as a base for this kind of wreath rather than buying a wreath base, simply because my grandmother did it this way and she taught me. You may prefer to buy a wreath base or perhaps to try it both ways to see which way you like best. You will need your wire snips and you also might want to wear gloves for this, sometimes the vines will have unsuspected “prickers” on them and getting one of those in a finger doesn’t exactly add to the pleasure of wreath making. Cut your foliage pieces, vines etc, into six inch lengths, take several of them and put them together, what ever amount looks right to you, I like to use three, then add some dried flowers to this mixture, this is called making a bundle. Wire your bundle to the top part of the hanger, next to the hook. Make another bundle and do the same thing, overlapping the first bundle so that the stems are covered. Do this around the circle of your wreath base until it is covered. The stems on the last bundle should be tucked up under the first bundle and wired in place. If you used a store bought wreath base, make a circle with the wire to hang the wreath by, then wrap and cut the wire, tucking the end in securely to avoid later injuries. If you used a coat hanger, the hook part is already there to use as a hanger so you just need to cut the wire and secure it. You may want to take this outside and lightly spray it with some sort of preservative, to hold it all in place. Some folks use extra firm hair spray for this purpose. Now give yourself a pat on the back, you have worked hard and you have made a beautiful decoration for your home.

Making rubber stamps using liquid polymer

: If you are interested in making rubber stamps and have investigated other rubber stamp making methods you should seriously consider polymer stamp production as a serious option. What are Polymers? Tiny molecules strung in long repeating chains form polymers. Why the chemistry lesson? Well for one thing, your body is made of them. DNA - the genetic blueprint that defines people and other living things - is a polymer. Proteins and starches in the foods we eat, the wheels on our skateboards, and even the tyres on our bikes and cars are polymers. In fact, we are surrounded by polymers every day, everywhere we go. Polymers also form one of our recyclables, which is good for the environment. Polymer Curing - How stamps are made with chemistry! In polymer chemistry and process engineering, curing refers to the toughening or hardening of a polymer material by the cross-linking of polymer chains; this is brought about by chemical additives, ultraviolet radiation or heat. Rubber stamp polymer is supplied as a liquid and is cured using ultraviolet radiation. Although natural sunlight can cure polymer, liquid stamp polymer requires precise exposure to UV light to make rubber stamps. Polymer in a bag The most exciting development of recent is a new innovation where polymer is injected into a flat rectangular sealed bag; this new product does away with backing sheets, foam tape and coverlay film normally required for stamp production. Processing times are reduced by about 50% when using these new bags; this reduced labour cost negates the extra cost of the bagged product. The bags are available in a range of sizes to suit production demand. Polymer in a bag has also eliminated the problem of air bubbles during processing; this common objection to polymer stamp making has now been overcome. The Polymer Rubber Stamp Market You have two distinct markets for rubber stamps. The first is the traditional business stamp market where stamps are affixed to handles and self inking units. The second market growing rapidly is the craft industry; craft stamps are affixed to wooden or clear acrylic blocks and are used for card making and scrapbooking. Craft stamps such as an artist's range of stamps that follow a theme are traditionally made using the vulcanizing process due to it being more suited to mass production of the same stamp. Nowadays card makers want custom designs and clear see through stamps of which polymer is making some significant inroads. It is not economical to offer custom made stamps using the vulcanising process as plates need to be made up each time designs change. Polymer 'Jellies' Be aware that some polymer stamps called 'jellies' are being sold to the craft industry, these polymer stamps adhere to an acrylic block without adhesives due to the back of the stamp being sticky after processing. In theory this works well, the problems are that the back of the stamp can pick up dirt and that distortion of the stamp can occur. In some cases the stamp can tear easily as it has no structural backing. The development of a clear silicone mat has solved this problem, InstaGrip is a very thin mat that has 'cling' properties and clings to both the acrylic block and the plastic back of the stamp, if it loses it's cling properties due to a dust build up you just rinse it under water. see instastamp. au/instagrip. php So where is the polymer stamp industry heading? Business stamping seems to be just as strong as it always has been, with the introduction of the bagged polymer many more manufacturers will be offering polymer stamps due to the bag's labour saving benefits and the lower entry cost for polymer processing equipment. The craft stamp industry will see much more polymer in the future for much the same reasons. The demand for custom made stamps through services such as stampsearch. au where you can select craft artwork online and then have that image made into a stamp will help the polymer stamp industry making craft stamps develop in a positive manner.

Making the most of your photographs when scrapbooking

When choosing which photographs to use for your scrapbooking project, it is best to pick photos of good quality. Consider choosing only photos that clearly illustrate the theme you desire for your album. Digital pictures, instant photos and even black and white photographs can be used. It is important to be careful that the chemicals within the photos do not interfere with the rest of your scrapbook. Some chemicals used in photos like lignin and acid in photo paper can lessen the preservation time of your scrapbook album. The safest pictures to use are digital photos simply because they can be easily printed out directly on lignin-free and acid-free paper. Keep in mind though that the pictures you choose to mount will become a permanent feature of your scrapbook. That's why it is best to use copies of your most cherished photos. Just scan each picture on a computer scanner and be sure to print each image on lignin-free and acid-free paper for the best results. To make your photos especially interesting, try using a photo editing software program to alter the look of your photos. Make that color photo black and white or try sepia for that old-fashioned look. Cutting and cropping your images adds interest to your scrapbook pages and sends a special message to the viewer to take a closer look. All in all, the way photographs are arranged and presented can enhance the overall look of your album and turn your project into a professional-looking memory album.

    Making your own bead jewelry

Creating your own bead jewelry is a creative hobby that allows you to produce unique pieces for yourself, family and friends. Here is how you can get started. If you ever asked yourself "couldn't I do that myself?" as you looked through rows of bead bracelets, necklaces or earrings at a trendy boutique, the answer is "yes". Beading is a creative and entertaining hobby that not only will have you produce unique, handmade items of jewelry, but will also be a great source of gift ideas for family and friends. The first step would be to find a good local bead shop. While there are wonderful mail order catalogs and websites that will sell you all the supplies, nothing substitutes for the support and advice of experienced sales personnel. Ideally, this store would also offer a number of beginners' classes that would help you learn basic techniques (if there is no bead shop in your town, some introductory books such as The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beading will have to do). Start with a simple project, such as a bracelet or basic necklace, and do not go overboard with expensive beads and findings (clasps, hooks, etc.). You might be wanting to use Swarovski crystal, sterling silver and semi-precious beads right now, but you can work up to that later. Some stores will even offer packaged starter kits that include a beading board (which helps you with project layout and measurements), some basic tools, beads, wire, findings and a how-to-book. You should then set up your "beading space" – preferably an uncluttered, well-lit area. You might have to invest in a good lamp, maybe one combined with a magnifying lens. Remember, you will be stringing some rather tiny objects! Make sure you have plenty of containers to keep different types and colors of beads separate – nothing will spoil your joy of beading like having to hunt for a single bead in a jumbled pile. Beading stores will sell you various storage systems (including beading bags for the beader-on-the-go), but you can also experiment with inexpensive plastic containers meant to hold small hardware or fishing tackle. Well, there you are ready for your first bead jewelry project! Don't forget to protect your beading space from curious cats and toddlers. Happy beading, and have fun waring your hand-crafted jewelry!

    Making your own bird feeder

There is estimated to be over 100 billion individual wild birds on earth, and each one needs to eat certain amounts of food on a daily basis in order to survive. That’s where we come in! Birdfeeders are fun to make and are essential in order for birds to live. Bird houses can be made out of practically anything and are usually hung in different locations around your yard for birds to enjoy. Purchasing a bird feeder is another option, however this can be expensive and both methods serve practically the same purpose. The following is a fun and easy way for children (or adults) to make a bird feeder: What You Will Need: • An empty milk or juice carton (any size will do) • String (must be strong) • Scissors • Stapler • Hole punch • 2 small sticks or wooden rods • Bird seed • Markers, paint or anything which can be used to decorate the carton. Ensure the paint is water based not to hurt your feathered friends and try not to use anything that can be potentially dangerous to swallow. Directions: 1. Wash and dry the carton thoroughly. 2. Decorate your carton however you would like 3. Using your scissors cut a square in each side of the carton (a square big enough to fit at least the head of a bird). 4. Using your hole punch (or your scissors) make a small hole below each square. 5. Push your sticks or rods through the holes from one side of the carton to the other (the sticks will form a “t”). 6. Fill the bottom of your carton with bird seed. 7. Punch a hole (or two if you like) in the top of your carton. 8. Hang your finished feeder to a tree branch with string. Although these bird feeders will not last forever (or even close), they are a fun, inexpensive way for children to learn about birds and the importance of caring for our wildlife.
