Choosing the right material for your deck

Looking to add a deck to your home? If so, the toughest part of the project may not be deciding what size or where to put your deck, but what material to use. Until recently, pressure-treated lumber has been the standard material for deck builders. Wood has always been relatively easy to repair and work with, but now more than ever, homeowners have a growing choice when they visit their local home center. The decking materials that have seen the most rapid growth in sales among consumers are compositesposites are a combination of polymer resins and premium recycled wood fibers that offer the best of both materials. The resins shield the wood from insect and moisture damage, while the wood protects the resin from UV damage and adds stability and traction. Maintenance is another key factor in the decking material decision. Some homeowners may opt for pressure-treated wood that they can stain a color to their liking and seal. Homeowners who choose composites can choose from several different colors but never have to stain, seal or treat. For both options, a good pressure-washing at least two times per year is a good habit to get into. Veranda is a leader in composite decking and railing systems that offer all the beauty of wood without time-consuming upkeep. By minimizing maintenance, it gives you more time to enjoy the season. The composite looks, installs and works like wood, with added protection against shrinking, rotting, decaying, splintering and termite damage. No special tools are needed for installation; conventional woodworking tools will do the job. If you do choose to go with a composite decking material, experts recommend purchasing all the material at one time, as manufacturing runs can produce slightly different colors. Like most composites, individual Veranda deck boards will have slight color variations from piece to piece. This is due to the natural variations in wood fibers and polymers. Most importantly, whatever type of deck you build, be sure to get out and use it with family and friends; that's when all the hard work you put in really shows.

    Christmas crafts for kids

With the holiday season soon upon us, it’s time to think about some fun crafts you can do with your children in preparation of Christmas. My kids love doing holiday crafts, and I’m sure yours will too! It has always been challenging to find age-appropriate crafts that all of the children will enjoy making. My children each have a few years between them, so we have amassed quite a collection of crafts and craft ideas. Here are a few suggestions you can use. Consider it an early Christmas gift from me to you! Bead garlands are one of my all-time favorite crafts. They are fun to make, extremely colorful, and great for children of all ages. You will need some string or plastic cord, a whole lot of beads, some scissors, and some glue. Cut the string or cord to the desired length, and thread it through the first bead. Tie a knot around that bead, and add some glue to keep it secure. Now add the rest of your beads. When you reach the end, tie the string off on the last bead and add some more glue. Now that was fun, wasn’t it? Pine cone ornaments have also become classics in our Christmas craft repertoire. They are appropriate for children of any age, and keep very well in storage. You will need to spend some time collecting the pine cones. We collect them when we are out walking the dog. We simply paint them with silver or gold paint, and cover them with glitter. Let them dry somewhere safe, and tie them to your tree with a piece of ribbon. Are you getting in the holiday spirit, yet? Bell ornaments are also a lot of fun to make, and they will last for years to come. We feel that small terra cotta pots are the best to use. Have the children paint the pot green, and allow it to dry. Once the pot is completely dry, attach fake jewels or beads to it with glitter glue. Then thread a small bell with some ribbon, and pull the ribbon up through the hole in the pot. Tie a knot in the ribbon so the bell stays secure, and add any other final touches you might like. I am sure your kids will love these crafts as much as mine do! Have a wonderful holiday, all!

    Clay pot crafts

: If you have an artistic mind and you love you make something decorative and attractive for your home then clay pots are definitely a great idea to work with. You can make different items or can also so some painting on the clay pot in such a way that it will make the plant look better. It may also happen that you not even notice the plant just because the pot is so attractive. To make a painted clay pot you need to have 4” clay pot, opaque apple green acrylic paint, opaque blue lagoon acrylic paint, opaque yellow acrylic paint, semi opaque pumpkin acrylic paint, semi opaque white acrylic paint, fine point permanent black marker. Steps to make a painted clay pot: 1. First using a small ruler and pencil, you should measure the height of the clay pot starting just below the rim. Then mark off the halfway point between the top and the bottom of the clay pot. Altogether you should measure and mark off the halfway point at four opposite places on the pot. 2. Now holding the plastic measuring tape up to the clay pot, connect the halfway points and then draw a light pencil line between all the halfway point marks around the pot. 3. Line up the ruler with each of the halfway points around the pot one at a time and draw a light pencil line from the top of the plant pot just below the rim to the bottom of the pot at this point. You will have 8 squares drawn on the pot. 4. Then you have to decide on the color scheme or arrangement of the colors into squares you have drawn on the pot. In one set of squares you can fill any combination of two colors and in the other one also you can fill other set of colors. 5. Squeeze a small amount of the pumpkin acrylic paint on the paper plate and gather a small amount of paint on the straight edge of the brush and paint along the straight lines of one of the squares with a generous coat paint on the paper plate. Outline and fill in one of the square completely with a generous layer of paint. Now paint the square diagonally across from it pumpkin using the same method as you did for the first one and let the paint dry. Rinse out and shape the brush again.

    6. When this paint is drying, you can turn the pot around to other set of 4 squares. Squeeze a small amount of yellow acrylic paint on the paper plate. Outline and fill in one of the squares with a generous coat of the yellow paint.

Paint the square diagonally across from it yellow suing the same method as you have did for the first one and then let the paint dry. 7. When the paint on this side is drying, turn the pot around to the first set of 4 squares. Squeeze a small amount of apple green acrylic paint and paint the square diagonally across from it green using the same method as you did earlier. Again let the paint dry and you can rinse out and shape the brush again. 8. Again while this paint is drying turn the pot around to the second set of 4 squares and squeeze a small amount of blue lagoon acrylic paint on the paper plate.

Next outline and fill in one of the squares with a generous coat of blue paint. Paint the square diagonally using the same method and let the paint dry. 9. When the paint is drying for the last squares you have painted, it is time to paint the edge of the pot white. Squeeze a small amount of white acrylic paint onto the paper plate and paint the edges.

    Craft ideas for grandparents day

With Grandparents Day being the first real holiday of the school year (falling on the first Sunday after Labor Day), crafts are typically a special way for children to celebrate the holiday. Different craft ideas that are used on other holidays can also be adapted for Grandparents Day. Here are a few ideas for your children to take part in for this holiday. One of the easiest crafts to create is a greeting card. A child can draw his or her own picture and use personal creativity to make a card that speaks from the heart. A card created by hand will please any grandparent more than a store-bought card ever could because whatever the card shows or says is guaranteed to come from the heart. Many online resources offer black and white posters that can be printed out for coloring. These can be colored and given to grandparents as a gift for the holiday. If you start early, you can help your child create a collage with pictures and magazine cutouts that show the child’s feelings for his or her grandparents. Or, you can help your child pick flowers and dry them, then glue them to a piece of construction paper on which he or she can express their love for grandparents. Crafts can be simple or complex. A favorite project for children is to use uncooked, dry macaroni glued to paper to create a picture or phrase. Candy necklaces are also popular. Even beads are available for children to make jewelry with now. The important thing when choosing a craft for your child for Grandparents Day is that it be appropriate for their age and abilities. It should be simple enough that they don’t feel as though they are being forced to do something they don’t really want to do, while maintaining a challenge or difficulty level that keeps their interest and doesn’t make them feel as though they are wasting their time. Crafts are a great way to say “I Love You” to the special grandparents in your child’s life, and the grandparents will certainly appreciate the consideration shown by their grandchildren.

Crafting ideas for children keep it simple

Kids love to do craft projects, there is no doubt about it. But I think children, especially younger children like to have their projects less structured. I totally think this is true because they can be more creative and have more fun that way. Don't get me wrong, I come up with craft ideas for my daughter and we have a lot of fun with them, but she seems to have more fun creating her own craft ideas. A few years back I went to our local good will store and bought a ton of craft supplies for very little money. I bought beads, pipe cleaners, glitter, stickers, feathers, yarn, lace, buttons, and just a ton of crafty type stuff. I put it all in a big box with some glue and glue sticks and thus my daughters crafting box came into existence. We have since added stickers, markers, cotton balls, sequins, and other stuff we find. I bought a big tablet of thick paper and thus her "scrapbook" came into existence. She loves to get it out and create different pages of ideas and creations. She cuts pictures out of magazines and adds them to it as well. Sometimes she just makes her own craft projects out of the materials instead of doing her "scrapbooking" and she has a great time. The only drawback to her scrapbooking is sometimes she uses a lot of glue and we have to wait for it to dry before she can turn the page and move on to her next crafting creation. So don't always think structured when it comes to craft ideas for younger children. You and they will probably have a lot more fun if you let their imagination rule the project. After all it is their creation so there is no wrong or right to it. They are less likely to become frustrated because they can't make their creations look just like they are suppose to as well.

Create pretty recycled notepads from junk

This is how to turn brown paper, paper bags and any other paper scraps into cute and useful notepads and scribble pads. It is simple to do, so even little children can help! They make great little presents and if you start to save your paper now, you will have a good collection in no time. Set aside a box for collecting half-printed pages from the desk, paper shopping bags, scraps of pretty wrapping paper or wallpaper samples, and put them to good use! You will need: A pile of scrap paper Scissors Scrap cardboard PVA glue (white glue or school glue) Decide on the size of your notebook and cut a piece of cardboard as the backing. Use this to cut out a number of pages for your notebook. You can mix and match papers and textures or stick to one kind. Stack them up with the cardboard underneath, bang them gently onto a hard surface so that they lie true, and then put them flat on a table or counter with the top edge protruding slightly over the edge. Weight the stack down with a heavy book but leave the top edge uncovered. Paint along the top of the stack with the PVA glue, making sure that all the pages come into contact with some glue (a finger comes in handy for this!). Leave to dry. The notepads are now ready to use, but you may prefer to embellish them a little - especially if you intend to give them as gifts. Try painting on an extra thin layer of glue and dipping into glitter. Use a small piece of ribbon or braid along the top edge, stick on buttons and bows, or just use an attractive piece of gift wrap as the top page and finish by adding a further, folded strip of the same paper to neaten. The possibilities are endless and you will have fun experimenting.

    Creating a bridal shower scrapbook

Your best friend from college is getting married. You’re the maid of honor. You’re thinking there is no way you’re going to get her a toaster or blender. Why not make her a bridal shower scrapbook? Once the invitations are chosen, save one, completely filled out to put at the beginning of the scrapbook. When you send out the invitations, ask each guest to mail you one photo of the bride with the guest, along with a few sentences about how they know the bride, or a special moment they’ve shared with the bride. Another option is to have paper and pens available at the shower and have all of the guests write their thoughts while at the shower. For those guests who can not attend, it’s wonderful to have their photos and thoughts also. Since you want the paper to be acid free and lignin free, consider mailing the paper with the invitations. Did the bride register at a particular store? Go to the store and take photos of the store, from the outside. If the bride goes with you, take photos of the bride standing outside of the store. If the store has a catalog, take a photo of the store catalog. If the shower is held in a reception room, take several pictures before your guests arrive. If the shower is held in someone’s home, take photos of the outside of the house. Then take some photos of the decorated room prior to everyone arriving. Are you serving food? If it’s prepared ahead of time, take photos of the table with all of the food on it. Did guests bring the food? If so, provide them with paper to write down the recipe, which you can then include in the scrapbook you are making. When the bride begins opening her gifts, try to take one photo of each gift. Jot down who gave her the gift and try to include a photo of the guest on the same page as the gift photo from that person. Make a point of getting at least one photo of each guest in attendance. If you play any type of games that involve writing, try to use acid free, lignin free paper so that you can include the game sheets in the scrapbook. If the bride has thank you notes, include a blank thank you note in the scrapbook, so that she’ll have the memory of what notes she used. Using all of the above suggestions, you can create a very special memory for the bride to be and I guarantee that the bride will appreciate this scrapbook much more than a toaster or blender.

    Creating a childrens birthday scrapbook

I remember when my kids were young, I loved their birthday parties and wanted to capture every moment. Often though, it wasn’t until after the party was over that I realized I only took a few photos and that I didn’t save any of the extra invitations. Knowing in advance that you’ll want to make a scrapbook of your child’s party, you can save items such as the guest list, the invitations and any greeting cards the child gets in the mail. All of these can be added to the scrapbook. Consider taking a photo of each guest as they arrive. This photo can be with or without your own birthday child. If you are not using a digital camera, consider having 3 sets of photos printed. Set one is for the scrapbook you are making of the party. Set two is to send to each guest’s parents, and set three is to put away for when your child is older and wants their own set of photos of their first 20 years of life. When it’s time to open presents, in addition to taking photos, save the cards that come with the gifts. These make wonderful additions the scrapbook. Often, at younger ages, children make their own cards, and they are truly too precious to throw out. Add them to your birthday scrapbook. If you’ve ordered a cake, or even if you’ve baked a cake, take a photo before the candles are added. If you’ve used a family recipe to bake the cake, make a copy of the recipe to include in the scrapbook alongside the picture of the cake. Does the party have a theme? If you are purchasing stickers to give away in goodie bags, purchase an additional set of stickers (of course acid free and lignin free) to add to your scrapbook pages. If the child’s grandparents are at the party, make sure to take photos of the child with the grandparents. This is true for other relatives that are there also. Mini albums for relatives who do or do not attend make wonderful gifts. I love when I get photos of my niece. It’s so neat to keep up with her parties and other activities through photos. With the above suggestions, you’ll create a lasting memory for both you and your child.

    Creating a family recipe scrapbook

I can not tell you how many times I’ve called my mom and said “mom I just have to have your recipe for such and such”. It’s been a slow accumulation of recipes, but she chuckles each time I realize I need yet another recipe from her. Now that I have an adult daughter of my own I really wanted to pass the recipes on to her also. Many of these recipes she’s been eating since she was old enough for solids. My daughter also has a recipe book from her aunt on her dad’s side. Recipe scrapbooks can be given to aunts, uncles, cousins, children etc. A 6x6 scrapbook works wonderfully. They are large enough to hold a 3x5 index card. You can also use an 8x8 scrapbook and have the recipes on paper, instead of index cards. I think it’s a great mix to combine photos and recipes. For example, a group family photo at the beginning of the album is a great way to start off the album. If you’ve asked for recipes from multiple family members, put a photo of the recipe submitter on one page and the recipe on the opposite page. It’s also a great help to have a shopping list. Consider the actual recipe on one page and a shopping list on the opposite page. I very often take a recipe to the market with me and shop off the recipe page. By creating the list, the recipe book holder just needs to remove the shopping list page and take it to the market. Another idea is to create a bit of history with your recipes. If you’ve had several family members contribute recipes, consider having the recipe on page, photos on one page and a bit of information on the author on a 3rd page. Most scrapbooks are very expandable, so there is room for many pages in one album. All of my cookbooks have measurement charts and converters in them, so when making a recipe album, it’s great to add this information to either the back or the front. Recipe albums are a great gift for both the new bride, especially if the gift comes from her husband’s family with recipes for all of the dishes he grew up with and for the college graduate setting up their first home.

    Creating a surprise party scrapbook

It is so much fun to plan a surprise party. I planned a party for my mom for her 70th birthday. After it was over, I realized how much she did not know about the planning I had done. I was able to recreate quite a bit for her scrapbook. My dad and I actually began making plans a year in advance. I began her scrapbook with a calendar page from the year before. I then included photos and information from all of the banquet rooms we had considered. The banquet room we ended up choosing was in a hotel, so we saved a postcard from the hotel along with a brochure of the hotel. We did hire an entertainer and so I included some information from his website to add to the scrapbook also. When we compiled the guest list, I printed it out so she would know who we invited. I had asked for R. S.V. P.s through email and so I was able to print out all of the emails, both those saying they’d love to attend and those that were regrets. Some of the regrets actually wrote personal messages to give to my mom. So, they were given to her at the party and then put into her scrapbook with the other messages. I also saved one of the invitations so she could see the invitation that went out to all of her friends. Journaling can also be fun when planning a surprise party. For example, my mom did not want to go to the restaurant where the party was being held. We journaled about how we had to convince her that no one else could accommodate our family that night and how this place was the only one that served foods my sister could eat. When we arrived, we did not want to walk through the parking garage, and so we led my mom around the side of the restaurant. She truly thought we were all nuts, not knowing where we were going. These are great things to journal as a remembrance of the event. During the party, we had multiple people taking photos. We of course were the last guests to arrive and I wanted photos of other guests as they arrived and of the hor d'orves table. And of course we wanted a photo of my mom walking in and being surprised. We did take pictures throughout the evening and had a lot to work with when we went to create her album. My mom was able to see the party from start to finish through our eyes.
