Indulge your inner hippie and learn to tie dye

Even if you're not a child of the 60s, you've probably had the pleasure of owning and wearing tie dye clothing. If you've ever been to an event with a craft fair, chances are that you've noticed those eye-catching booths full of colorful tie-dye clothing and home decor. You may even have marveled at how they manage to incorporate those intricate, vibrant designs onto a plain cotton T-shirt. While intricate tie dying is truly an art, you and your family can have loads of fun at home making your own tie dye (or tye dye) creations. Hands down, the best way to learn how to tie-dye is through instructions demonstrated on a video or DVD. Seeing how it's done, as opposed to reading about it, makes all the difference in the world. Still, tie dye is a process of trial and error, so why not give it a whirl (or a swirl)? It's All About the Fabric When it comes to tie dye, the right fabric is critical. Natural fibers - like cotton or linen, pick up the dye well. If you stick with 100 percent cotton, you can't go wrong. To start with, why not pick up some inexpensive T-shirts at your local mass merchandiser? Get one for each family member, and make it a party! Remember, though, that you need to wash and dry the new garments before you start your tie dying party. Unwashed new fabric won't pick up the dye very well. The Secret of Dyes Actually, the dyes you use to tie-dye aren't a big secret. For cotton, you need to use a dye that will react well to the fabric, namely Procion MX, dissolved in a urea solution. You can make virtually every color imaginable with just three colors: yellow, turquoise, and fuchsia. But, before you start dying, you need to soak your fabric in soda ash. Tie dye artisans use a few other chemicals as well, which you can learn about on an instructional DVD or video. The Fun Part: Patterns Tie-dye is all about colors and patterns. Learning how to make swirls, crinkles, stripes, wavy lines, hearts, clovers, and - yes - even peace signs is a great way to engage the creativity of everyone in the family. You can learn to tye knots; twist fabric into pancake shapes secured by rubber bands; roll a shirts to form tubes, which you then tie; and pleat the fabric to make symmetrical patterns. Applying the Dye There are at least six different techniques you can use to apply the dye to your fabric, from dipping and soaking to using squeeze bottles and spray bottles. Again, someone with years of experience can best teach you how to apply dyes to get the results you want. Making it Stick After tie dying your shirts or decor, it's important to follow the steps necessary to make sure the dye reacts with the fiber. Then you need to repeatedly wash the fabric in a special solution so that the dyes don't inadvertently mix and so the garments remain colorfast. Ultimately, though, tie dye is all about having fun. It can be a family adventure, a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon with friends, or a way to indulge the creative hippie within you. A great instructional DVD or video will help you learn to tie dye, and send you well on your way to creating gorgeous, vibrant designs.

Jazz up your scrapbooks with embellishments

Do you want to learn to create lasting and memorable keepsakes that show your unique and personal artistic skill? Scrapbooking is a fantastic craft that allows your creative side to go wild. You can do so much more than just placing photographs in an album. Not only do you have your one-of-a-kind photos to work with, but also you can assemble your scrapbooks with virtually an unlimited array of embellishments to jazz them up. Adding embellishments to your scrapbooks will most certainly add interest, dimension and color, making your album distinctively yours. What is meant by embellishments? Embellishments are much more than just paper. They can be made from various materials like plastic, wood, cloth and metal. There are many embellishments you can purchase. Several of these are charms, brads, ribbons, eyelets, buttons, beads, feathers, fibers, hemp or jute cord and tags. In addition to the commercial products you buy, you can add personal items relating to the theme of the scrapbook; such as a train, concert or Broadway play ticket. You can make use of party invitations, snippets of wrapping paper from gifts and even the confetti. For a scrapbook with a travel theme, try using a map of the location where you vacationed. Embellishments can be attached using glue dots, which are extremely strong and great for sticking even heavy embellishments to album pages. Tear off the size you need and place the embellishment on top of the glue dot. Apply it with a little pressure for a couple of seconds. Also, you can utilize a glue pen or double-sided tape, which works well too. You may also wish to sew certain embellishments onto the page with embroidery floss and colored or invisible thread whichever meets your need. There are even colored staples that can attach your embellishments to the page. While you are trying to add the perfect touch to those pages, remember to use embellishments sensibly. Do not lose sight of the fact that the photographs are the main focus of the page. Embellishments should only be used as an accent to compliment your photos. You do not want the embellishments to take center stage or make your layout look too crowded. The varied selection of embellishments will set your pages apart from plain and boring photo albums. Instead of just putting photos on a page, with the application of embellishments, you will get those creative juices flowing. You now know just some of the embellishments that are available to use and its time for you to jazz up those scrapbooks.

    Journaling in your scrapbook

Many people like to add words to their scrapbooks. Words help to tell the story behind the picture. There are several ways to add words to your scrapbook pages. One way to journal is through premade words and phrases. You can find stickers, diecuts and word cutouts, all with different phrases. You can also use alphabet sets to create words on your pages. One page I did has my daughter’s four high school pictures, one from each year. Down the middle of the page I put the letters DPHS. In 50 years, when she looks at the page, she’ll know those 4 pictures were her four high school pictures. Other folks enjoy writing in their albums. If you are going to write on the pages, choose an ink color that matches the color theme of your page. You can write directly on the pages, or you can write on paper and then attach the paper right to your scrapbook page. How much, or how little you journal is completely up to you. In some cases, I just wanted a year attached to my pages, so that my kids would have a general idea of how old they were at the time. In other cases I wanted a city name or building name to remind me of where I took the picture. In yet other instances I wanted to put people’s names and a little bit about the people in the pictures. I know some folks who included song lyrics or poems with their photos. They believe the song lyrics or poem truly tell the story of the photos on that particular page. I have several photos of my own grandmother. On page one, I have just one photo of her, and then a lot of journaling, speaking of where she was born, what year she was born, where she grew up etc. On other pages, I put many photos of her, with very little journaling. It really depends on why you are making the album, who the album is for and what information you want to add with your photos that will determine how much journaling you’ll do. If your children are young, or your grandchildren are young, it’s fun to ask them to write something each year and include that in the album so they can see their writing as they grow up. Sometimes, if I have a lot to say, I’ll type it on acid free paper and then cut out what I’ve typed and add it to the page. Typed words will allow me to say a lot more than if I write the words. Often, we want to include a photo or article from a newspaper on our scrapbook pages. My suggestion is to copy the article onto acid free paper, as the newspaper will yellow and crack with time. One friend has a son who was on the high school football game during his 4 years in high school. He was often written up in the newspaper. She copied every picture and story written about him and he now shares those stories with his own son. Another technique I use with journaling to cut shapes; ovals, hearts etc. and then journal on those pieces of paper and then attach to my scrapbook page. If you are making a scrapbook for a friend, it can be fun to share your thoughts, versus just telling a story. For example, maybe you and a friend had a girl’s night out and took some photos. You can share “I remember how much we laughed and laughed this night. My stomach hurt from us laughing so much”. This shares not only photos but you are also sharing yourself with your friend. Acid free index cards are great for journaling. They are just the right size to write on and then attach to your scrapbooking pages. There is no right or wrong way to journal. The key is to have something in words to help tell the story of your photo.

    Journaling with bad handwriting

If you are like me, you’d much rather type than write. I have never really liked my handwriting and I’m not fond of my printing either. However our handwriting is a part of us. And if we are creating a scrapbook either for ourselves or for someone else, it’s nice to include something written by us, sharing that part of ourselves with the recipient of our scrapbook. I have discovered a few ways to write and/or journal without pages of writing we don’t care for. The first technique is called “hidden journaling”. This involves writing but then “hiding” what you write. Most craft stores sell small inserts for scrapbooks. These inserts resemble a page protector, but are usually half the size. You can write to your hearts content and then tuck it away inside the insert. This way, the journaling/writing is included, but it’s not what our eyes focus on when looking at a page. The next technique for including your writing is to write in the front of the book either the theme for the book, or who the book is to, or even the date/year the book was created. This again, shows your writing style for that time in your life without having your writing all over the scrapbook pages. The final technique for including your bad handwriting” is to be very selective and only add a letter or number here or there. For example, if you are making an album in chronological order, consider writing the year on some of the pages. Or if your album is of various people, consider writing just one letter, the first letter of the persons name on that page. Try these techniques to incorporate your handwriting into your scrapbook albums.

Learn all about stained glass in a class

In the past few years I have made it a goal each year to try at least three new things during the course of that year. So when January rolls around I sit down and consider what skills or hobbies I'd like to gain in the next year and then I make plans to learn those very things. This past year I decided that I finally wanted to learn how to make stained glass pieces of my very own. I've always been intrigued by stained glass and I think it is one of the most beautiful kinds of art that exist. I love seeing stained glass pieces hanging in windows or used as candleholders. So I was very excited when I remembered my long lost desire to learn stained glass and I began the search for the best possible way to learn stained glass making. There are many ways to learn any new skill or hobby that is of interest to you. In fact, I was a bit overwhelmed in choosing how I would undergo the task of learning about stained glass. The first move I made was to do a little research of my options. I went to the library and found quite a few helpful resources on doing stained glass at your own home on your own time. However, for me, this wasn't the best plan. I know that I would start with great intentions and then let the busyness of life overwhelm my best intentions with the project. I ended up signing up for a class that would teach me how to do stained glass once a week at the local college. I went this route because I know myself and my tendency to do better when I have the outside accountability that a class and other classmates provides for me. So I began attending this class and was so thankful for the choice I made. I was thankful because I learned more than I expected to about stained glass work in a short amount of time. It seemed like it was only a few weeks before I was working on a stained glass piece of my own that I could have and cherish in my home. So my encouragement is to anyone that desires to learn about stained glass. I'd suggest that you find a class to enroll in at a local college or an art shop. Getting involved with other artists will inspire you and hold you accountable on weeks when you don't really have time to work on your pieces. If you enjoy your stained glass class half as much as I do than you'll love it.

Learn how to make a knitted doll

: Many times, you have some free time to spend and you are confused as what to do then? There are many great ideas to utilize that time efficiently and creatively. One of them is making or designing some craft work. Craft is the art or skill of doing something in an artistic way. There are lots of craft ideas such as candle making, scrap booking, fabric painting, painting projects, knitting etc. Among these, knitting is the most favorite craft work for women and many of them love to knit soft toys such as dolls. Requirements for making a knitted doll The knitted doll is very soft and simple to make. You can make it with any soft yarn kept for baby clothing that will really make it a gift for your kid. For making this, you need to have scissors, darning needles, ruler, knitting needles of size 8, cream colored ball of yarn or nay other color of your preference, a piece of 5/16 blue sheer ribbon, 5/16 blue elastic. Steps to make a knitted doll 1. You need to cast on 34 stitches with the help of soft colored yarn but remember to leave a 5 inch end that you will sew later. 2. You have to knit eight rows so that the bottom of the doll is formed. 3. Then, change the pattern to create the body of the doll and for this you need to knit one row, purl one row till you complete 62 rows. 4. Next, cast off your stitches and cut the knitted piece from the ball of yarn again leaving 5 inch that you will sew later.

    5. Now thread your darning needle with any of the 5 inch end and sew the end in the closest side. This will later roll up the sides of the doll such that the stitching is not shown. 6. Again, thread your needle with remaining 5 inch end and sew it to the closest side so that you can roll up the knitted side to form the doll. 7. Once you have the knitted piece complete, you need to roll and shape it up in the form of a doll. You have to lay down the knitted piece front side down on your work surface but keep the backside facing you flat.

    8. Next, roll the edges tightly starting from each end so that they meet in the middle but remember to keep each rolled side even in size. 9. Now, turn the knitted piece that you have rolled up over your work surface. This way, the rolled side should be facing your work surface and the other side with eight knitted rows towards you. 10. Then fold the rolled knitted piece almost in half and the edge of the side you have just folded should be touching the top edge of the eight knitted rows. 11. Next hold the folded knitted piece tightly with one hand and wrap elastic twice over the folded area nearly one and half inch down from the top. This will make the head of the doll and also secure the fold you made to form the body of the doll.

    12. Now, partially unroll the folded over knitted piece below the elastic but you need to unroll the knitted piece till you get the resemblance of the arms on either side of the body and also knitted areas stretched between them. 13. Now, flip the partial unrolled portion below the elastic over the head. This will make a hood covering the head with rolled up arms near the elastic that divides and creates the neck and hands.

    14. You need to cut 15 inch length of sheer blue ribbon and wrap this blue ribbon round the hood from back to front in same position as the elastic. You can tie a bow in the blue ribbon with the bow in front of the doll. You can trim the end of the ribbon at a slant.

Thus, you have a knitted doll that you can gift to your kids or decorate it as a craft work piece. To know more, visit our recommended website craft-books. net

    Learn knitting the chunky way

Copyright 2006 Alice Seidel When I was a kid, there was a candy bar by the name of "Chunky". It was nothing more than a solid square of chocolate, with some raisins and nuts thrown in. But, boy was it good! I can't remember how many nickels I plunked down for one of those on a hot, summer afternoon! Chocolate bars aside, if you want to learn knitting, learn it the "chunky" way. What do I mean by that? I mean, learn knitting in little bits and pieces. Learn anything in little bits and pieces, and before you know it, you have learned a LOT! So when you read a knitting pattern, whether it be a child or a baby pattern, or something for your mother or best friend, and the pattern tells you to work in garter stitch for the first 6 rows, you will know to "knit" all 6 rows. Garter stitch = knit every row. If you knit one row, then purl the next row, then knit, then purl, and keep doing that for the entire pattern, you are working in "stockinette" stitch. The word "stockinette" probably comes from an alteration of "stocking-net", because it means "a loosely knitted stretch fabric". As you knit and purl, your knitting begins to take on a loosely knitted look. The knit side has a "V" design in it, and the purl side has a "brickwork" look. And here's a newsflash for you: never, never, never knit a scarf in stockinette stitch. Why? Because, it will curl up like yesterday's french fries. And that's not a good thing! Your scarf will look more like tubing than a neck protector; unless you like tubing as a neck protector. Garter stitch and stockinette stitch are the two basic knitting stitches. Learn these and all the rest are mere variations on that theme. When you knit, oftentimes you will come across the words "wrong side" and "right side". The knit side is not always the right side, any more than the purl side is always the wrong side. Sometimes, the knit side is the wrong side, and before I start sounding too much like Edith Bunker, just take my word for it. In fact, when you purl on the "right" side and knit on the "wrong" side, you are using the reverse stockinette stitch. Usually when you are knitting cable stitches, you will use the purl side as the "right" side of your knitting; because cables show up much better on the purl side of your work. The right and wrong sides to your knitting only refer to which side will be on the outside and which side will be on the inside when your garment is worn. You see, it's little bits and pieces like these, that make you a good knitter; not always knowing what the newest yarn is all about, or should you buy those lighted knitting needles? Another chunky bit is the word "knitwise", and no it doesn't refer to anyone's brain power. Knitwise means to slip the stitch from the left needle to the right needle as if you were knitting it; but you are slipping it. Purlwise means to slip the stitch as if you were purling it. If you are not slipping the stitch, only inserting the needle in preparation to something else, then insert the needle knitwise. Or purlwise, if that's what the pattern calls for. So, you see, if you learn terms, a little at a time, then you will never be wondering what something means, when you come across it, in your knitting. You will know what it means. And, as you go, you add to your expertise! As time goes by, I will add additional articles on glossary terms, and lots and lots of other stitches and knitting terms. You know what they say, a little knowledge goes a long way; well, with us knitters, the more we know the better! And if we learn knitting the chunky way, why, that's about as good as eating that chocolate bar!

Learn the knitting essentials of how to care for your knitted items

When you have spent hours working on knitting a sweater, you want to make sure it looks as good after a dozen washes as it did the day you knitted it because after all that work you intend to own your knitting for a long time. Here's how you care for the things you have been knitting. Always use luke warm water. Laundry detergent is not recommended by many knitting experts. Use your shampoo. Many knitters believe that if it's mild enough but effective enough for their hair it must be good enough for their knitting. Add about a teaspoon to the water and wiggle the sweater around in the soapy water for a while then let it soak for at least fifteen minutes. Drain the water, squashing the sweater into the bowl to get rid of the water. Rinse with luke-warm water as many times as it takes until the water is clear. Press the knitting against the sides of the bowl. Don't wring it tight as you don't want to lose the shape. Then lay the knitting on a flat clean towel. Roll the towel up with the knitting inside and press a little. You will find this gets rid of a lot of the water. If you have a mesh sweater dryer then lay it out carefully shaping the sweater to its original proportions. If you don't have one the you can just place the knitting on a fresh towel. This takes longer to dry and most people suggest changing to a dry towel and flipping the sweater over so it dries quicker. I hope you could follow my guide to caring for your knitted items which I always consider to be part of the knitting essentials. I have a lot more information about knitting on my Knitting Essentials blog so please join me there to learn more.

Learn to crochet tips to make learning to crochet easy

Crocheting is not an activity made only for our grannies and for bitter spinsters. It can be done by everyone. Especially, now that clothing trends are now more inclined into the use of crocheted items, popular clothing designers are also smitten by crocheting. However, crocheting is not only for the plain Jane. One has to have the patience and, of course, the time to be able to do anything crocheted. So how does one actually get herself learn to crochet? It really is not a hard skill to learn. But it neither is an easy one. In order to get you going, all you need is a good crochet hook, yarns, measuring tape, yarn needle, some pins, and a lot of determination to finish a crocheting project. Here is a rundown of tips on how to easily learn crocheting: Hold the Yarn Like a Pro For newbies in crocheting, holding a yarn could be quite a tricky job. Even if it only takes some time of getting used to, knowing how hold it properly and skillfully is not to be overlooked. Here is how: 1. Let the yarn pass through your fingers upon holding it. This is how it is done: the little finger, then, beneath the ring finger, then, above the forefinger and the middle finger. 2. Another way to hold the yarn is to loop in the region of the little finger, and then, make it cross the forefinger. 3. Upon holding the hook, imagine how you would hold a pencil or a spoon. That's how it should be held. In that position, it won't be hard for you to heave the yarn from your fingers down to the loop in the hook. As you go along the process of crocheting and you start to get the hang of it, you will learn your unique and most comfortable way of working with the yarn. Don't be afraid to adopt a new method of holding it. It will help you become more of an efficient crochet craftsperson in the long run. Size Matters When it Comes to the Hook and Yarn One should not take for granted the skill of identifying the right hook and yarn to use in any crochet project. Hooks are identified through different letters and numbers that correspond to certain sizes. In crocheting, the higher the number or letter of the hook, the thicker the hook is. As for yarns, their varieties are identified through names. Resizing the Crochet Project Through the Pattern To reduce the size of a project, it is as simple as deducting some stitches. One can skip a stitch in a row and continue with the next to reduce the size of the project. To enlarge a project, it is as easy as inserting more stitches in a row. One can easily join two stitches of the same row together. This will make one produce a solo stitch on the next row prior to it. Reading a Pattern Like a Book What can complicate the activities of one that is engaged in crocheting are the abbreviations on a pattern. The use of memory and logic can help a lot in surmounting this little crocheting obstacle. The outcome of being able to memorize these important abbreviations is a much faster pace in crocheting and more efficient hands. 1. Crochet patterns and instructions are worked usually in rounds or rows. It will be indicated on the pattern if you are doing or working in rounds, rows or mixture of both. 2. Crochet patterns and instructions are generally ranked according to difficulty level such as advanced, intermediate, easy or beginner. Choose a pattern with a difficulty level that suits your abilities. Then, increase the level of difficulty as your skill advances. 3. Count the stitches that you have made as you go on with your work to monitor the stitches needed on each round or row as required by the pattern. 4. Verify your gauge by crocheting a sample of about 4 X 4 inches in the pattern. When your gauge results into a larger size than what is on the pattern, then use a smaller hook; when your gauge is smaller, then use a larger hook. When it's time for you to actually accomplish a crochet project, make sure that you follow the instructions well and you make your patience a bit sturdier than before. Prepare your devices beforehand to ensure the smooth flow of your crocheting endeavor.

Lessons i ve learned from sewing teddy bears

Normally all of creativity is dedicated to running my jewelry business, Trinity London. However, in recent months, I've decided to try my hand at sewing, specifically making teddy bears. Since I only attempted any type of sewing within the past few months, I have learned many things in the process that I thought I would share. Lesson 1a: If you think your cat or dog sheds too much, making a stuffed animal is not for you. Lesson 1b: People coming into your house while you are making a teddy bear may think you have sacrificed your pets as part of a cult ritual when they see the amount of fur on the floor. Lesson 1c: If your significant other is not attracted to hairy chests, it's probably best to wear something over your clothes. Lesson 1d: Even if you bought the fur there in the first place, the people at the craft store will look at you strangely if you don't use a lint roller (or a vacuum... or just burn the clothes and change into something new entirely) before you make a quick stop at the store to pick up that one piece you are missing. Lesson 1e: Expect to find stray pieces of fur in odd places (i. e. - on the light switch, the curtains, the shower, etc.) as it clings to everything. Lesson 2a: Slightly furry reversible fleece fabric makes it much easier to see where you are sewing. Lesson 2b: Slightly furry reversible fleece fabric is so thick that it will make your sewing machine buck like a bronco in a rodeo. Lesson 2c: It is easier to pierce your thumb with the eye of the needle when attempting hand sewing than it is to pierce two layers of slightly furry reversible fleece fabric with the sharp point of the needle. Lesson 2d: When your mother suggests using slightly furry reversible fleece fabric to make a teddy bear because it reminds her of the fabric used on bears when she was younger, pretend not to hear her while swiftly walking away from the slightly furry reversible fleece fabric. Lesson 3a: If you didn't need to pin the section of fabric you are sewing, but it is still staying together, it is most likely on a fold and you shouldn't be sewing there. Lesson 3b: The person who designed the pattern put those marks on the pattern for a reason. Lesson 3c: It takes a lot longer to remove stitches than to sew them in the first place. Lesson 4a: When making a jointed teddy bear, if you use plastic safety joints, be sure they are placed exactly where you want them before attaching the lock washer. Lesson 4b: Asking your husband to remove a safety joint after the lock washer has been attached may result in an unexpected flathead screwdriver injury. Lesson 4c: It is best not to laugh hysterically at your husband's unexpected flathead screwdriver injury, as he will probably not find it as humorous as you. Lesson 5: If your cat is a bit skittish, she may impale your loved ones with her claws when she sees you walking into the room with a 2' tall stuffed grizzly bear. Lesson 6: If you have a child, take a picture of your completed project before you show him/her because you may never see it again. I hope you have learned a little from my lessons... not that I would have made any of those mistakes myself.
