Keeping your eye on the big picture

We are constantly bombarded by sales messages every second of the day. Buy this. Do that. And quite often the next thing that comes around looks like the next big thing. It's so easy to get distracted off what you were doing and never quite finish it. The only real method of preventing this is self-discipline. Make it a rule to complete what you started before going on to the next thing. If you are working in a day job, then this is even more vital, since your time is even more precious. I have tons of projects I am working on at any one time, so I'm not just talking out my hat. I have adwords, web site development. I also do real live sales. It's a juggling act and sometimes it's so easy to just flit about and apparently do nothing. The only time I manage to get something done, is when I say to myself - right - that's it - I'm going to finish that now. Keeping your eye on the big picture is key. What is your goal? The goal will align everything and all your activities should fall into place around it. It is like the guide to your daily life. When you wander off. Remember the goal you can get yourself on track again. This is what I do and it helps me. So I hope it helps you too.

Kill your digital products... build your list

"Digital Products are great but they won't make or break you." "Seriously speaking... Don't murder your digital products, just don't depend on them to make the riches you deserve online. It won't happen that way. Products can brand your name, make you some capital to bankroll another project etc... But if you're looking to purchase that Island with your name attached to it better start focusing on building am e mail optin list. Not your typical list either, rather a very "targeted" optin list of subscribers giving them valuable content along the way never selling them until the list reaches a pinnacle. Then after you have built trust and a bonding relationship with your list members you should send a blast out with a targeted offer only after much research. Super affiliates know this. This takes patience and focus. You will literally fall out of your chair from even a 1 percent response to a mailing of 100,000 subscribers. Smart marketers have retired overnight following this simple but rarely taken road. Bombarding your list with offer after offer hoping to make quick and fast cash surely will have your members unsubscribing big time. Internet marketing is simple, and affiliate marketing is just as simple "if" you have your own list of subscribers. I've watched personalities like Mark Joyner sit back for 6 to 9 months while his posted lead capture page takes in the emails of interested visitors, carefully targeting his audience with copywriting technique and skill then when the time of fruition has come the list is used in a responsible manner and six-figures are easily made. Mike Filsaime's success can be found by his almost genius use of free viral marketing sites to build his list. Guys, it's the list, but not only that it's "how" you build it. This is the biggest marketing secret, actually it's really not a secret but most never take this advice to heart and they struggle. Take the advice... Mailing lists keeping it simple

: The right direct mailing list targets people who want your product or service. The direct mail mailing list is a key factor in a successful direct mail marketing campaign and a major point to consider in small business marketing strategies where marketing ROI (Return On Investment) is a key concern. What really makes your direct mail marketing and advertising campaign successful? The biggest single factor in the success of your direct mail marketing strategy is who you send your mailings to. A. You need a list. This can be: 1) a list of existing customers or prospects who have inquired as a result of any of your marketing efforts or 2) a list which you purchase or in some cases obtain for free. B. The mailing list must contain the names of people who are likely to be interested in the benefits of your products or services. Don’t try and sell beer to the Temperance Society or real estate to people who cannot afford it. You have to target your direct mail marketing efforts. What kinds of lists are available? C. The three basic kinds of lists that you can use are (you can use all three): 1. Your own list of prospects and customers. This is a list that you collected with your own personal marketing efforts. This is known as a house list. These people are most likely to respond to your offers, because they have responded in the past. 2. A response list is a list of people that have actually done something. They have either purchased something from the people who put together the list or inquired in response to some offer or asked to be on the list. They have some level of interest in the topic or purpose of the list. These people have not previously responded to you, but they have responded to someone in a related area (if you have purchased a correctly targeted list) so you know they are at least warm. This is a direct mail mailing list you can purchase from the owner of the list (such as a magazine or company) or a list broker. 3. A compiled list is a list of people who were selected to be on the list because they possess the characteristics that you asked the list broker to screen for. Examples of characteristics used to target correctly may include age, sex, geographic location, income level, etc. These are more fixed characteristics than response list characteristics, which are behavioral characteristics. Case study: California based Sun Pacific Mortgage’s Forest Tardibuono found a great way to get the right direct mail mailing list for his company which has a very successful direct mail marketing strategy based on postcards and direct mail mailing lists. “The title companies give us the mailing labels free. I’ll tell them we want all the homeowners in 95401 which is a zip we get most of our business from. So they’ll give us the mailing labels of anyone who is a homeowner from that lists. It saves money on labels and mailing lists. They’ll even limit searches to specific categories such as all homeowners from that zip who got a loan from certain companies and they’ll do the search according to that so I can really target the public so that the mailing will be more effective.” Mailing lists, correctly targeted, can make the difference in a mediocre promotional campaign to a wildly successful promotional campaign. It really just depends on what you are willing to have – success or mediocrity. So which is it?

Making money with internet marketing the smart way

How do you actually make money with Internet Marketing, what steps to you take to deliver the results? It is easy to get confused with Internet Marketing with everybody saying one thing or another is the Golden key to riches. But how do you actually get started or improve your results? First you need to take stock of where you are and stop reading your email for a minute. Ask yourself how many of the great ideas that you have read about have you actually implemented? Then ask yourself how many of those have actually made you money? For most people the answer is not pretty. But be easy on yourself because there is hope. So where are you now? For the beginners: Do you have a Domain Name? Do you have a Website? Do you have an auto responder? Intermediate: What size is your list? How is your auto responder setup? How many products do you have or promote? Advanced: How responsive is your list? How is your SEO? What results are you getting from your advertising dollars? What money are you making each month? Now there are many other things that could go on this list, but has it got you thinking? To improve on these things you need to look at how well you are executing the basics and how much time are you devoting to improving the things that support your internet empire and how much time do you spend chasing your tail or the latest super hot technique. By the way, most of those super hot techniques rely on the basic stuff already being in place first to execute them properly. So if things are not exactly where you would like them to be then you need to decide exactly in detail what you want to do about it and set aside some time to do it. So how do you prioritize your time? Do what the professionals do and keep a diary. Now this may not sound very cool but it works and has worked for a lot of people for a very long time. Sounds simple right, but are you willing to just do it? Set aside time each day (or as you choose) to work on setting something up, maybe a new longer series of auto responder messages that encourages the person to take another look at your products or affiliate links. Improve the sales copy on your website, submit some more articles to the article directories, and be active in forums related to your niche products. Now all of these basic things will make you money. And when your start making money with the basics then you can start adding things one at a time and see if they improve your sales. Ask yourself do these new techniques suit your style, your products, your mindset, then try them. So set some goals in your diary and write down some activities that you will do to help achieve those goals and spend more time working on your internet empire than reading emails that are making other people money. When you are making money these things become more enjoyable and you feel inspired to take it do the next level. So be kind to yourself, decide exactly what you want to do, decide when you are going to do it and then do it. Enjoy your Internet Empire, you are doing it for you after all!

Marketing via e mail for search engines

The mere mention of marketing via e-mail conjures up images of unsolicited e-mails offering penile enlargement pills, Viagra, various stocks offerings, and breast augmentation. Derogatorily referred to as "spam", these emails have made it all but impossible to discuss the legitimate use of email as a marketing tool. Yet e-mail can be a powerful tool when sent to people who have either opted-in (indicated an interest in receiving e-mail from a specific sender) or have a direct interest in the information being sent. To exclude e-mail from your online marketing tactical basket is silly. You simply have to make sure you conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the accepted rules of the game - meaning you don't engage in the blind mass sending of e-mails to databases you have not either developed on your own, or purchased from reputable opt-in list brokers. The successful use of email as a marketing tool can be broken down into 5 components. They are: 1. Database Once you have determined that you wish to engage in e-mail marketing, you need to decide to whom you wish to send your messages. The selection of a list to purchase should be based on your knowledge of your targeted market and who comprises your most likely customer. Many list brokers have lists they can accumulate based on a variety of demographic information, and some can also provide names based on a history of responding to offers sent via e-mail. The more you can narrow down who it is you want to send the e-mails to, the higher the response rate will be. Another excellent way to gather a viable e-mail list is to build your own. Over time you can gather a list of customer e-mail addresses that will prove to be a tremendous marketing asset, as it is comprised of people who have bought from you already and presumably have an interest in what you sell. You can gather your own list at your place of business and via your website, by offering people an opportunity to sign up to get your emails (which feature special offers and new product announcements). 2. Content The content of your e-mails should be designed to meet the needs of your audience. As mentioned above, you can use your e-mails to announce new products or make special offers. You can also inform your customer base about new developments in your market, announce special events, or provide opinions (based on the type of relationship you have with customers and the type of business you have). The e-mail content needs to be precise, well written, and engaging. You should make an effort to drive the reader to your website, where the information either continues, or the offer you are making can be purchased. 3. Format There are two different ways e-mails can be sent and the selection of either is based on the content of the e-mail and how you wish for it to be presented. E-mails sent in HTML format look like web pages and can feature graphics. These are more effective for sales promotions, but some people do not have their e-mail programs set to receive HTML e-mails, meaning that the content will come in without the graphics. Text e-mail messages are useful when you want to relay information and are able to keep your message short and to the point. You can use a link in a text e-mail to send the reader to your website where he/she can view more information in HTML format. 4. Testing Prior to launching a broad and ambitious e-mail marketing program it is recommended that you test your message with a series of smaller groups to make certain that what you are saying is being well received and that the response rates you anticipate are being met. The tests enable you to make adjustments before you go live in a big way. Not only can this help you sharpen what you want to say, but it will also avoid any large scale errors. Testing should be done to representative groups by taking random selections out of the lists you intend to use. 5. Tracking The beauty of e-mail marketing is that it allows for the tracking of your marketing program in ways traditional marketing cannot do. The information provided can include how many people opened your message and how many of them responded to whatever offer you included. This tracking not only allows you to judge the worthiness of the program, but also gives you clues into how to improve it. E-mail marketing is inexpensive and flexible, but should not be overused so that recipients don't become overwhelmed by the volume of e-mails you are sending (and therefore ignoring what you send). Sort of like direct mail, but with automatic immediate response mechanism - your website - e-mail marketing is a viable tool that can be leveraged as part of your overall integrated marketing program.

Navigate more website activity through email newsletters to visitors

When you own a business website, you may find if helpful to have a weekly or monthly newsletter full of useful information about your products. Newsletters can be a great way to navigate more website activity your way. Emailing weekly or monthly newsletters can be the best way to update or remind past visitors of your services or products. Extending special offers in those newsletters can generate more website traffic, purchases of services or products and possible referrals from the visitor’s friends and family. Customers and prospective customers are the backbone of your business. Without customers, you would have no business. Businesses know this and they know how important it is to maintain communication with their customers in order to build a stronger relationship. Good communication and strong relationships generate loyal customers that will keep coming back to you for more. Email newsletters are a form of email marketing. This is a great marketing tool for small businesses to operate productive websites. It is a matter of communicating with your target audience. For example, Jane has visited your website looking for a birthday gift for her husband and she decides to opt-in and sign up for your business newsletter. Even if Jane decides not to make a purchase at that time, in a week or a month when she receives your newsletter with a special offer or discount, she may be encouraged to return to your site to make a purchase. If she is satisfied with her purchase, she may become a loyal customer and refer your services or products to her friends and family. Why send newsletters via email instead of through the postal service? Customers prefer receiving emailed newsletters over regular postal mail because it is fast and convenient. In addition, there is never that extra piece of mail that ends up clogging your mailbox. Businesses like sending newsletters via email because it is easy, fast, and more affordable than regular postal mail. It is also less paper and ink used, and no postage or printing costs. Emailed newsletters are simply more economical and no trees have to die. When building your website, it is best to offer the opt-in newsletter as a way to maintain communication with visitors and customers through the information they provide. You can also provide special discounts or promotions to encourage visitors to sign up for your website’s newsletter. Offering appealing incentives in the subject line of your emailed newsletters will encourage the recipient to read your newsletter right away instead of sending it straight to the trash bin. This type of marketing will help you to navigate more website activity and boost sales of services and products, not to mention all the recognition your website will receive. Writing compelling newsletters can help build trust and win the loyalty of your target audience. By sending newsletters on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, you can remind the recipients of your services how they can benefit from your business and why they need your service or product. This is also a great way to encourage them to buy your services or products with limited time offers, special discounts or extra bonuses. It would also be a good idea to include simple how-to’s in your newsletter. Many people enjoy reading how-to’s and learning how to do something new. You can easily navigate more website activity through sending emailed newsletters to visitors. Newsletters are a great promotional way to build a stronger and better business through your website and for gaining loyal customers. For those entrepreneurs who are skilled enough to create a newsletter on their own, this can be a very rewarding challenge. Moreover, it is a challenge that can bring you more website traffic and generate more customers that will eventually create more purchases. Alternatively, you can choose from many reputable businesses that specialize in creating email-able newsletters for you. Many small businesses find themselves too busy to keep up with the demands of creating newsletters and if it is in your budget, you may consider hiring the professionals to take care of it for you. It takes a load off you, but you still get a great newsletter. This way you can focus on promoting your website and in all areas of customer satisfaction.

Need help building a list tips for online marketers

Most marketers will tell you that building a list is one of the most effective ways to spend your time if you hope to make money online. Despite this, countless people do not bother to even try, or, having looked at the work required, decide that the effort is just too much. If you have come to think this way, I would seriously suggest that you rethink your marketing strategies. An opt-in list of prospects is one of the most valuable assets you can build. Let's look at that statement a little more closely. I was talking to a friend and fellow marketer the other day, and we were discussing the relative merits of blogs and mailing lists. He runs a reasonably high traffic blog in the marketing and making money online niche and has built up a fairly decent subscriber base over the past couple of years. He is experienced and makes a full time living online, but, until recently had not focused too much on building a mailing list. Recently, he changed his approach and began to build his own list and has been amazed by the difference in conversion rates that he has experienced. A mailing to his young list produced 40 sales from one email. A blog post on the subject of the same product produced 1 sale. As you can imagine, he is now converted and a true believer in the power of owning a list. This is all well and good, but the things that hold many people back from trying to build a list are often cost related. It costs money for a professional autoresponder - usually a monthly recurring charge, and it's not always easy to persuade people to sign up for yet another list, and it's no simple task to drive traffic to your opt-in forms either. This is where maintaining a blog and your own website(s) becomes very important. Placing your opt-in form in as many places as possible will increase the chances of tempting new subscribers. You will need something to offer them in exchange for their information too and a free gift of some kind is usually the way to go. It is a lot of work, and this is the other thing that puts a lot of people off. In terms of return on investment however, the work and the costs really are worthwhile. There are plenty of free programs out there that claim to do the work for you, but, despite the best efforts of the program designers, most of them fall short for the end user and are really no substitute for your own list. There is one solution that works very well for the beginner however. It does not require that you have an autoresponder (although if you do it provides for full integration) and you do not need to pay for the service. It works on a very simple principle, that goes a step beyond traditional viral marketing. By using the system to build your list, you will also be helping others to build theirs. It sounds so simple it's a wonder that not more people have caught on to it but the results can be quite impressive. The marketer who invests in the primary software and hosting stands to gain the most of course, as he or she will reap the benefits of the viral effect in spectacular fashion, but it doesn't detract from the benefits for everyone else. If you are still hesitant about building an opt-in list of your own, don't put it off for too much longer, because the sooner you begin, the sooner you will see the rewards. I have helped many new marketers on the road to their first list and if you want to know more, you can pick up a free manual from our site.

Newsletter content and considerations for your optin email marketing list

Publishing a newsletter for your optin email marketing list provides many benefits in terms of driving traffic to your site as well as boosting the sales and profits of your site and company. This is a marketing ploy that will not put a huge dent in your marketing budget and will also not require many man-hours in developing this project. With a newsletter, you can inform the public about your company and products as well as services. You can keep them posted and updated about whats going on with your company as well as many of your promotions and offerings. With these, you keep on reminding your optin email marketing list that you are still there and willing to offer them good deals and services. Newsletters also allow you to impress your optin email marketing list. It can show your expertise and knowledge about the topic at hand, and the many benefits you can offer them. When you impress people, they will become potential customers and another great thing is that they can recommend you to their friends, colleagues and family. All of them could very well be customers in the future. If you do not have a newsletter or publish one for your site, then you may want to consider about researching, and becoming well informed on how to publish one. It is not as easy as it seems but if and when you get the right idea and process, it will be smooth sailing from there on. Try to take the time to learn what you need to, and get that newsletter good and ready to attract subscribers to your newsletter as well as traffic to your site. In the next few paragraphs, I will provide you with some things to reflect on when you decide to start your own newsletter for your site. Here are five things to consider when publishing a newsletter. 1. Make sure that the content of your newsletter closely relates to your business or the theme of your site. Do not dwell too far on what could be regarded as your field of expertise. You have started a site and your theme for your site will always be something you are knowledgeable about. For example; if you have a site that sells auto car parts, your newsletter must contain articles or content like photos that pertain to cars, auto parts and such. You may also include content about your company and your staff. Remember that visitors of a certain site are there because they are interested in what that site has to offer. If they sign up for an opt-in list or for a newsletter this means that they want to be updated for that certain theme or subject. Be sure that when you publish your newsletter, you are providing for the need of the subscriber as well as their interests. 2. Ensure that you have well written, information riddled and content rich articles. Your articles will be the body of your newsletter and they should be able to excite your readers as well as provide information. Articles should be well written and checked for errors such as spelling and grammatical errors, for it to look professional and believable. The trust of your client in you and your newsletter is at stake here. 3. Fact: check your articles. Make sure that you provide true facts and figures, so that your reputation as an expert, and your knowledge in that field is not questioned. If you lose the trust of your optin email marketing list, any questionable facts and figures you provide, may persuade them to unsubscribe to your newsletter. You will lose many potential sales this way. 4. Provide fresh and new articles that can provide new information to your optin email marketing list. If you publish stale and old news in your newsletter, there is a tendency that people or your optin email marketing list may already have read and known about them. This will lose their interest in your newsletter and they will not get to read what is most important, your ads. They may not open or read any of your newsletters, thus ruining your purpose in writing and publishing newsletters, which is to get them to visit your site and make a purchase. 5. Never use copyrighted materials such as photos and articles, unless you have the writers permission. This is outright plagiarism, and you may get into a lot of trouble for this. You can lose your business and get sued over copyright infringement. If you do not have the time to write your own articles, there are many willing and able professional article writers that can do it for you for a reasonable fee. All your investment in writing and publishing articles will be well worth it when you see your list build up and your traffic increasing.

Opt in email and ezine advertising still more effective than rss blogs and ppc

When you factor in all the costs related to promoting via an Opt-In Email or Ezine campaign you are still getting the best return on your advertising dollar investment than using RSS, Blogs or PPC. The measurable results are significantly faster than RSS and Blogs and less expensive than using Pay Per Click marketing. Without a doubt, Email and Newsletter advertising campaigns are still two of the best tools available to promote your product or service. Email Marketing Campaigns There are a great many people that are still reluctant to use what is one of the best marketing tools available today. Many marketers associate email marketing with spam and have concerns about being shut down by their ISP or hosting company. The fact is, done right and by following specific guidelines you have little to fear. Follow the guidelines outlined below and you will probably kick yourself for not using this tool a lot sooner. 1) CAN-SPAM COMPLIANT: Just about everyone receives hundreds of spam-related emails per week and that is the main reason a lot of legitimate businesses balk at using email marketing. But if you are a legitimate business you only need to do a few things to make your email marketing efforts legal. (a) Subject Line: It should not be misleading in any way. It should relate to the body of the message and it is a very good practice that the first paragraph relate to the subject line. (b) Specific Opt-Out Instructions: You must include a way for the reader to opt-out by supplying a link that works. (c) Physical Address: If you work out of an office this is the address that should appear after your signature. If you work out of the home your home address should appear after the signature. (d) From Address: Messages should be from the same "from address" 2) USE OPT-IN EMAIL ADDRESSES ONLY: This is very important. Use only Opt-In email addresses for your marketing efforts. There are many legitimate email suppliers so you have a lot of options. And even using 100% Opt-In Email Addresses does not guarantee that you won't have a few people complaining. But if you purchase addresses that include the full name, IP and date stamp you have proof of the opt-in just in case it is needed. Additional Tips For a Successful Email Marketing Campaign 1) USE EMAIL MARKETING SOFTWARE: We like [email protected] HTML Bulk Email Software ( myaffiliateprogram/u/mailwork/b. asp? id=1979) and GroupMail 5 ( infacta/asp/common/groupmail. asp). Some of the suppliers listed below provide free email marketing software. 2) USE SPAM FILTER SOFTWARE: Don't let this software intimidate you. The software is easy to setup and use. It is a good idea to use spam filter software to filter out words or phrases that tend to get flagged by ISP spam filters. Some of the suppliers listed below provide free spam filtering software. 3) USE AUTORESPONDERS: Using an autoresponder will save you a lot of time and work. You can preload messages and assign specific criteria to when they should be sent. Some of the suppliers listed below provide free autoresponder software. 4) TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY ONLY: For best results send your email campaign from Tuesday to Thursday. These are the days that will obtain the most attention to your message. Monday is usually bad because people are planning their work-week and getting tasks out of the way quickly. Fridays are bad because most people are already planning their weekends. 5) COME TO THE POINT IMMEDIATELY: Don't write a book. Try to be as brief as possible and outline your key points in the first paragraph. If you word it right the reader will read on. Opt in list building is a provable success

There has been a lot of talk about the reality of success regarding opt-in lists. Due to this talk there have been many marketers partaking in surveys conducted to ensure that website promotion through opt-in list building is not just internet hype. The results obtained in these surveys have clearly shown that opt-in list building is still the hottest marketing tool for website promotion. The surveys are also a means of eliminating some of the internet marketer’s fears based on the technological advancement which might pose as a threat to the success of opt-in list building. It also helps bring new understanding to the huge earning potential that an opt-in list creates. It is without a doubt that new website owners will have fear with all the SPAM filters making it hard for their prospective clients to receive their mail. However it has been proven that most opt-in list marketers have not been hurt by this technological advancement. This is due to the obvious fact that opt-in list subscribers are not being spammed as they have willingly parted with their email address. Other fears that have hit the scene of internet marketing in terms of opt-in list building have been that most people are not willing to part with their emails these days. These fears are unfounded as the increase in broadband is making it easier and cheaper for people to get online. Therefore more customers are made available and are indeed willing to part with their email addresses. The other reason for the success of opt-in list building is that many websites are allowing subscribers to join the opt-in list on the websites own home page. This is making it easier for people to sign up on the mailing list as opposed to having to click on another link to get the option of joining the opt-in mailing list. Opt-in list building is about giving your potential customer the option and incentive they need to purchase your product or service. It is requires you to have the customer in mind. What are their needs and how can your product provide for those needs? A good opt-list building technique is about getting your customer to have a relationship with you. Once you have your subscribers email address you have one foot in the door. Your subscribers are like minded people who are in some way interested in your product. Don’t disappoint them by offering something that you cannot deliver. An opt-in list is also a good way to get traffic to your site. The best way that a website can survive is through generating consistent, growing website traffic.

Optin your key to effective email marketing

You know what an optin is right? You know, that little box that pops up on many sales pages that offers you more information or a free newsletter if you become a registered member or some crap like that. Well it may seem annoying and like a waste of valuable time and space, but let me change your thinking on them right now. It is critical that you know just how effective these little things are in the broader scope of bulk email marketing. They literally will double, triple, or even quadruple your income if you use them appropriately. So what is the basic idea of the optin? Well you have heard of email marketing where you form a list of people that are interested in your product (or other similar things) enough to learn more but not yet interested in making a purchase. Well the optin tool is what forms this list. Then once the list is formed you send them emails that expose their need or a problem that they may or may not realize they have and offer your product as a solution. It's sounds crazy and a bit cheesy, I know, but you would be amazed at how effective it is. The lists that you form are also valuable for other selling other products to that subset of customers as well. Yeah, well all you need is a simple software tool that adds the optin box and then sorts and manages the lists that are formed. It then allows you to input the emails that you want sent out, in a specific order, and at a specific time interval, and then tracks the outcomes to help you evaluate what emails are good and which ones need more work. So what at first seems relatively simple becomes a complex and incredibly valuable tool for any serious internet marketer who is always looking for ways to increase his (or her) conversions on any or all of his products. So why is the optin tool so effective? Well, that's a great question and unfortunately not one that has a good complete answer. But i will take a stab at it by giving you some of my ideas that could explain the amazing effectiveness of the optin. For one thing it allows the customer to delay making a decision on something that they haven't totally thought through. Either they didn't realize they needed it as bad as your are telling them they do or it was just a quick idea that they were checking out for the first time. Second the optin generally gives the bait of free information about strategy or how the product works or life in general. And you know that humans LOVE free stuff so this reels them right in and the rest is simply age old marketing tricks. So there are my two cents, but seriously -- don't let this opportunity escape!

Permission email marketing tips for offline small business owners

: Unless your small business is situated under a rock, you've probably heard something about email marketing by now, and you may have even wondered if it's time for your small business to get into it. In its simplest terms, email marketing means communicating with consumers through email. But there's a big difference between trying to talk to consumers who never asked to be talked to in the first place, and talking to your own customers, who at some point have said, "Yes, I'd love to hear from you." That's where permission email marketing comes in. Permission email marketing means giving valuable information to consumers who have requested to receive it. It is the ONLY legitimate way to send an email marketing campaign, and it is the only way your small business can benefit from email marketing. But how do you get your customers to say "I do"? If you have an online business, or if your offline business has a website that receives many visitors, compiling subscribers can be as easy as adding a subscription box to your website. You would offer users something valuable, like a periodical newsletter or emails with discount coupons and, in return, your users would subscribe to your mailing list. Sounds great. But what if your business is primarily offline, and what if you don't even have a website? Many businesses think that's reason enough to step out of email marketing altogether. But what they're missing here is that compiling a permission email marketing list offline can be as easy, if not easier in some instances, as building a list online. We have advised many clients on tips to collect email addresses at the point of purchase. Here are some of our favorite tactics: - Collect business cards, Offer a prize. This is one of the oldest, most proven methods of collecting customer information in-store. Your prize doesn't even have to be huge. If you own a restaurant, it can be as simple as a free dinner for two. If you own a hair dresser, it can be as easy a 50% off coupon towards their next cut. The beauty here is that customers who submit their business cards have expressed genuine interest in your products or services. So when you contact them by email with further offers, you know you're talking to people who want to buy what you're selling. The one thing to keep in mind here is that you MUST inform users that by submitting their business cards, they are agreeing to receive email communication from you. This can be as simple as adding a sign to the business card drop-off box saying: "We will send you an email to notify you if you have won. We may also send you periodical emails with special offers and announcements. If you do not wish to receive emails from us, please write 'No Email' on your business card." - Start a V. I.P. Club Many consumers like the idea of belonging to something exclusive, and receiving offers that are extended only to a select group of people. The labor on your part is minimal. It's as easy as keeping a notebook by the cashier. As a customer comes up to complete a purchase, casually tell them about your businesses' V. I.P. Club and ask them if they would like to join. Customers will appreciate this if you position it as a rewards club, or a way to say "Thank you, we love to have you around" to your most loyal customers. Of course, you should offer V. I.P. Club membership to any of your consumers, as you may find, once you start emailing them offers, that's a great way to build your most loyal customers. Make sure the offers you send them are, in fact, exclusive, and that you email V. I.P. Club members often enough, but not too often to become annoying (once or twice a month is usually a good interval). Again, when you're collecting customer emails for the V. I.P. Club, make sure your customers know they're signing up to receive email offers from you. *** These are just some ideas to get your permission email marketing subscriber list started. The best news here is that compiling a list is actually the toughest part of managing an email marketing campaign. As long as you're using an email marketing manager program that's specifically designed for small businesses like yours, the rest of the process is a breeze. Creating a campaign involves little more than selecting a professionally-designed template, typing text and choosing a few good images. Your campaigns will be scheduled and sent automatically, so you'll never have to worry about being involved in that part.

What you will get to do (and this is probably the most exciting and most rewarding part of email marketing), is analyze your campaign after it's been sent. You'll be able to see how many people opened your email message, how many people clicked on each link within the message and, best of all, exactly who did what. Now that's what we call accurate, detailed, and immediate consumer research (you actually get to track your consumers' actions from the exact moment they happen).

And while you would previously pay a fortune just to get this research data, today your small business can send professional email marketing campaigns and track detailed consumer behavior for less than it would cost you to print store flyers. It's the new age of marketing, and there's never been a better time for your offline small business to get into the game.

    Remember to sign your email

When you finish typing an email message, don’t forget to sign it. In email language, that doesn’t mean simply typing your name. The “signature block” contains a great deal more information. An email is a blank screen. It contains none of the contact information found on traditional company letterhead or stationery. So, you need to provide this information in the form of a signature block. Avoid the temptation to create a fancy banner with lots of symbols at the top of your email message. Most of that fancy schmancy stuff doesn’t translate well from one email system to another. It also creates huge files, which means the message takes forever to open. Locking up a client’s email is not the best way to make a positive impression on him/her. The best position for the signature block is at the end. When creating your block, try to keep it to four lines. In some cases, you may need more space. Use caution, though, or the contact information may end up being longer than the body of the message. To solve this, try putting multiple pieces of information on a line. For example: Marketing Director, ABC Meeting Planners. In determining what to include—again think of your letterhead. Provide your full name, title, company name, phone number, and email address. You may also want to give your mailing address and fax number. If you have a website, list that address, too. Don’t miss an advertising opportunity. Why include all this contact information? Maybe an important client wants to call you instead of replying via email. Don’t make it difficult for him/her to find you. Including your email address is not redundant. Messages get forwarded, edited, etc. The ultimate receiver may not have a clue who the original sender was. Almost daily, I receive requests from people for information, and they don’t tell me who they are or where they are. Even after requesting a mailing address, the response often comes back with no company name. Can you imagine mailing something to a 40-story office building that contains 150 businesses with the envelope addressed only to an individual? If you work for a large company, such as a hotel or convention center, consider using a separate signature for internal messages, since your coworkers don’t need all those details. You might provide your phone extension, in case there isn’t a company directory handy, and your department, if the receiver doesn’t know you. To keep you from having to re-type all this information with every message, newer email programs allow you to create standard signature blocks. This feature is usually found under the “Options” or “Preferences” heading. It automatically inserts the block at the bottom of your message. You can create numerous signatures and use them for different types of emails. If you use the same closing (Sincerely; Warmly; Regards) for all correspondence, you can save even more time by including it in your signature block.

    Safelists pure madness or not

If you're anything like me you have been or are still trying to figure out the best ways to reach people on the Internet with your offers. I just wanted to clue you in to what I have learned from my experiences with safelists, also known as optin lists. You have probably seen or read other articles on this subject before already, but maybe my insight might strike a little bit of a different or higher note in your head. I'm also going to include a little bit on the safelist submitters too as they are a major player in the safelist game. The safelist is a great concept and one that catches everyone’s eye when they first start a program or business on the Net. And why not? We are all looking for an inexpensive way to get our offers out in front of some eyeballs. They actually were pretty decent when they first came about. Ok, so what's the real deal? The lists you join usually ask for two different email addresses. One is called the contact e-mail address, which is where administration can e-mail you. The second address is known as the list address which is where the mail from other members for their ads will be sent to you as a list member. With your contact address, the administrator will send you updates along with one other little tactic that I'm sure you know about if you have tried safelists already, contact solo ads. For the most part, the list email addresses that people use are ones that are set up in one of 2 ways. The first being a free account where the list mail is delivered to and most mail from time to time without reading anything. Sometimes people set up filters that direct the incoming list mail right into the trash folder. In other words, your mail isn't doing much good, ;0( Wonderful huh? The other is what they call a potty e-mail account that automatically dumps all the mail at set intervals which again means, no eyeballs looking at your ad. The funny thing is that most of the potty accounts are offered by the safelist administrators themselves. Now, what does that tell you? Pretty simple answer, they don't care if your basic list messages you send are read or not. They want to sell you solo ads which makes them money and there's actually nothing wrong with that I guess, if you don't mind donating your money. Even contact address email can and many do get dumped. It's definitely better than having your message delivered to the members list addresses though. Read on, there's more...... The other popular safelist scripts are based on credits. You usually get a few credits for signing up which is to lure you into the list. Then you earn credits for reading other list members emails. Sounds like a winner, right? Hold on a second now. Lets take a closer look at this type of list and what is actually taking place. First off, for the most part you have to read a TON of email to earn enough credits to send a message. You might read them for a little while but, believe me, it WILL get old fast! Oh but wait. You can purchase extra credits to send more mail if you like. Yup, another way to make money for the list administrator. Hmmm...again, there is nothing really wrong with that but, if your messages are simply going to the list addresses, then odds are they are just getting dumped and NOT read. Even though you now spent money for credits to send a mail with, what did you really accomplish? Oh there's more, don't stop reading yet.......... Most lists offer free memberships which allows a member to mail the list like every 3, 5 or 7 days depending on the lists setup. Some of them only allow free members to send to a specific number of members per mailing. Of course the lists even have a few paid upgrade options and depending on which level you choose corresponds to how many credits you will receive every month to mail with. Generally it's one credit equals one mail sent to one list member. Great idea, but again are your messages doing any good? I don't think so. Who's making the money here? You tell me. But wait, there are a few credit based lists that offer a unique feature that is pretty nice. It's the ability to actually use credits for placing a solo ad to the members contact address. This means that even as a free member you can use this feature, at least in some lists. Now the nice thing about this is that once a person receives the e-mail and open it, there is a timer that runs and you have to stay on the site until it finishes in order to receive the credits. But, you usually get a nice reward for your time and you catch some interesting sites too that just may be of interest to you. I know I have from time to time. The cost in credits for a free member to send one of these is pretty hefty, but I think it's definitely worth it for what you receive in return for you time. At least it's a solo ad that has the best odds of getting opened plus it doesn't cost anything out of pocket. If you would like to get a look at one of these types of safelists, you can even get a free account to try it out if you like, jump here: tinyurl/s3k36 Now here's the real kicker...... You can sign up with a submitter and have your ad sent to 100's or 1000's of safelists with a few simple clicks of your mouse. This means you can reach all kinds of people, right? Figure it out. Hundreds or even thousands on each list times 100's or 1000’s of lists equals 100,000 or more. Yes you can, but once again think about where are your messages are ending up, ( in the trash). What really irritates me is when a list owner offers a submitter, for a monthly fee. Many of them offer potty e-mail accounts too. Isn't that a double edged sword? Basically you are paying for your submitter monthly to send your messages to supposedly reach 1000's upon 1000's of eyes, but they are actually going to the potty accounts that members also pay for monthly, so who is reading any mail? Nobody, it's a catch 22. That falls right in the lines of what politicians and magicians use, the old smoke and mirrors routine to cover up the truth and what's actually happening. Wouldn't you agree? Hmmmm..so is there an answer? Well, hold on a second now. There is a newer type list that has just recently come about known as a viral safelist. So what is so different about this over any other lists? Good question, here's your answer. With this type of list you can sign up free or of course purchase and upgraded account. When you sign up members, they go into the system under you and any members these people sign up go under you too. This is your personal list. Here's where the difference lies. Instead of just having your members and the members that they sign up under you, once a week they do what is called shuffling of the list. What does that mean? Simply that it randomly shuffles all the list members and even if you did or didn't have any members join under you yet, you could end up with a sizable downline to mail to that week. It's a pretty interesting concept. You never lose your members no matter what. If you would like to see one of these lists which you can also try out free, take a look here: tinyurl/l8bqq You know, I guess it's better than nothing if you can get even one set of eyeballs out of 1000 safelist members you send to reading your mail. It's better than NO eyeballs at all. Go ahead and use the free ones. But, watch out for paying services as for the most part, they make someone else money, NOT you or I. Are you really getting a good value for your dollar? So, are safelists Pure Madness or NOT? Probably not madness in the eyes of a safelist administrator. But, how do you feel now? Hey, do you want to join my safelist FREE? LOL. Just kidding, I don't have one.
