    Hawaii fishing tips

The opportunity to be on a boat ready to catch fish, enjoying the beautiful scenery, and the camaraderie with the crew of the boat is the best experience in fishing you can find. Here are some helpful tips to enjoy fishing. 1. Choose a boat wisely. A boat that meets your needs and your goal on what to do with the fish you catch are the things to consider when choosing a boat for Hawaii Fishing Trips. 2. Choose the appropriate Island in Hawaii that meets your desired duration of the Fishing trip. For shorter trips, choose an Island in Hawaii that has deep water right near shore. These islands are ideal for shorter trips in fishing where catching fish won't take long. 3. Consider bringing tackle, bait, ice and fresh water. Confirm with the boat company if they will provide these items. Tackle is a set of pulleys and ropes assembled to facilitate the mechanisms for hoisting and pulling. Bait is for luring the fish. Ice is for keeping the catch fish fresh during the trip. Fresh water is for thirst quencher during the fishing trip. 4. Wear comfortable clothes that are suited for a hot summer day. T-shirts and shorts are the best pair of clothes to wear in fishing. An extra T-shirt will also be useful. 5. Consider bringing a baseball style cap for shading. This is effective in shielding the hot rays of the sun during the fishing trip. 6. Bring polarized sunglasses to see the fish in the water. 7. Closed toe boating shoes are highly recommended to use. They are made for keeping the feet from slipping when action gets good. 8. Bring food and drinks if the boat company won't provide these items. Cans are better than glass for drinks. Chips like Cheetos and Doritos for snacks seem to go well at sea. 9. Don't forget to bring medicine for seasickness. To minimize feeling seasick, take an 8-hour sleep before the fishing trip. Being fully awake and active before the boat leaves the dock will help prevent from feeling seasick all through out the fishing trip. 10. Eat a full meal at dinner and a light breakfast before the trip. 11. Don't forget to bring sunscreen. Sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher is highly recommended to protect the skin from the harmful UV Rays of the sun. 12. Decide before the trip on how to get at the harbor for the fishing trip in the morning. Either choose to take a cab or rent a car. Using these tips will go a long way towards having an enjoyable day of fishing.

Heritage fishing fishing in the past for the future

Heritage fisheries are carefully maintained aquatic preserves in various parts of the world where a tradition or habitat surrounding fishing has been protected from today's modern hazards. A heritage fishery may be a lake, river or part of the ocean; its locale having less to do with its heritage designation than preservation of a certain style or era. Heritage fishing's purpose is twofold: to experience fishing as it was in the past and to preserve fishing for the future. Glendalough State Park is the newest member of the Minnesota State Parks family. Its land was given to the state by a private donor in the 1990s and the lakes on the park acreage were fished privately for nearly a hundred years. No one other than members of the donor's family or their guests was allowed to utilize the lakes at Glendalough State Park. As a result, fish sizes and populations in the Glendalough lakes are more representative of historic times than of modern times. Annie Battle Lake, the largest of the Glendalough Lakes, allows the angler to experience fishing as it was in Minnesota during the 1800s. Motors of any kind are not allowed on the lake. Canoes and rowboats are available for rental at the park office and shore fishing is a pleasure from any location here. Gas powered vehicles are prohibited, as are any type of electronic fish-finding device. Large bass, panfish, walleye and northern pike abound under the crystal clear waters of Annie Battle Lake because the waters are unpolluted by gas or oil. Catch-and-release regulations and fishing limits are strictly enforced here, maintaining the size and count of the population for generations to come. A small brook connecting Annie Battle Lake to another of the park lakes is waist deep with a sandy bottom, providing excellent wading areas for bass fishing. The Lave Net Fishery at Blackrock on the Severn Estuary in Wales is the last of its kind in Wales and has also been designated as a heritage fishery. Treacherous tidal waters averaging speeds of 7-8 knots have witnessed generations of fishermen pass along this fishing technique. Less than a dozen lave net fishing licenses are issued by the Welsh government each year, with all belonging to a local association dedicated to preserving this unique method of salmon fishing. The only noticeable difference between modern and historic lave netters are that they now sport waders as opposed to animal skins. The lave net itself, a Y-shaped structure constructed of wood and a hand-made net, remains unchanged. Anglers wade into the river and either "cower", waiting for the salmon to approach him, or watch for the telltale salmon splashes announcing their location. The fisherman can then net the fish before they head to deeper water. This kind of fishing is restricted by law and by the tides. Anglers have about 1.5 hours before low tide to practice their craft when conditions are calm. Their knowledge of the tides and of the area, received from the generation before, serves as their guide. Kjaerra Laxefiske on the Kjaerrafossen River near Helgeland, Norway dates back to 1388. Ownership of the two heritage fisheries here is marked by the "markebol", a medieval unit of measurement. Salmon are caught via the use of ancient fishing tools, while the buildings surrounding the fisheries were restored to medieval timber and stone during the 1950s. Visitors are welcomed to the weekly opening of salmon pots every Thursday where the catch of the week is revealed. Wherever they are located, heritage fisheries are an important part of the environment and the community. In addition to offering the simple thrill of fishing itself, they provide an opportunity to learn from the past, as well as preserving the present heritage of fishing for future anglers.

    Home grown nightcrawlers

There are many ways to have nightcrawlers ready to go for your next fishing trip. One of the oldest and most used methods has been a crawler bin at your home. This can be as simple as a 3x3x3 planter box or even Ѕ a wine barrel filled with good soil. Try to stay away from unnatural materials like metal or plastic, as they can heat up faster than containers made from natural materials. If you plan on having your box above ground, remember that crawlers prefer the dark. So don’t use transparent materials. My grandpa had a box buried in the ground in back of his house. He had strategically placed it near the house, in a shadier flowerbed. This method accomplished a couple of things. First, it kept the worms in a central location and ready to quickly dig up on his next fishing trip. Second, it insured that the worms would not get too hot in the summer months. And third, the out of the way location meant nobody would trip and fall into it. If you decide to put your box in the ground, be sure not to have to soil go all the way to the top or your worms will pull a Houdini and escape. After each fishing trip, Grandpa would put the unused nightcrawlers into the box. This way he always had crawlers on hand for the next fishing trip. That is one way to stock your worm box. The other is to order a batch of worms from a worm farm. Regardless how you decide to start your worm box, putting the unused worms from your trips in will help keep worms ready to go. I’ve heard it said that a ratio acceptable to a happy worm bin is 1 to 4. So let’s say that 1/2 pound of worms would be happy in a box that was about 2 cubic feet. Remember too that worms need a good size surface area for oxygen to get to them. Also, for goodness sake, don’t forget to drill some holes in the bottom and sides for water drainage. This also is good for some air, if your box is above ground. Newspaper ripped in strips helps to protect the worms and keep moisture in the ground. There are plenty of companies that sell worm bedding and even food supplements. As with any living thing you care for, taking a little time to read up on it will insure a successful situation. This also applies to worms. Remember…fish don’t like dead worms. Give them a “box” lunch instead!

How about doing some walleye fishing

The Walleye is a freshwater perciform fish native to most of Canada and to the northern United States. The walleye is sometimes also called the yellow walleye to distinguish it from the blue walleye. In some parts of its range, the fish is known as the yellow pike or pickerel, although the use of these names should be discouraged since the fish is related neither to the pikes nor to the pickerels, both of which are members of the family Esocidae. Genetically, walleyes show a fair amount of variation across watersheds. In general, fish within a watershed are quite similar and are genetically distinct from those of nearby watersheds. The species has been artificially propagated for over a century and has been planted on top of existing populations or introduced into waters naturally devoid of the species, sometimes reducing the overall genetic distinctiveness of populations. The common name, "walleye", comes from the fact that their eyes, not unlike those of cats, reflect light. This is the result of a light-gathering layer in the eyes called the tapetum lucidum which allows them to see well in low-light conditions. In fact, many anglers look for walleyes at night since this is when most major feeding patterns occur. Their eyes also allow them to see well in turbid waters (stained or rough, breaking waters) which gives them an advantage over their prey. Thus, walleye anglers will commonly look for days and locations where there is a good "walleye chop" (i. e. rough water). Walleyes are largely olive and gold in. The dorsal side of a walleye is olive, grading into a golden hue on the flanks. The olive/gold pattern is broken up by five darker saddles that extend to the upper sides. The colour shades to white on the belly. The mouth of a walleye is large and is armed with many sharp teeth. The first dorsal and anal fins are spinous as is the operculum. Walleyes are distinguished from their close cousin the sauger by the white colouration on the lower lobe of the tail. The walleye is a relatively r-selected species. They require fairly clean waters and are found most often in deep mesotrophic lakes and moderate - to low-gradient rivers. The walleye is considered a "cool water" species. Adults migrate to tributary streams in late winter or early spring to lay eggs over gravel and rock, although there are open water reef or shoal spawning strains as well. Some populations are known to spawn on sand or on vegetation. A large female can lay up to 500,000 eggs and no care is given by the parents to the eggs or fry. The eggs are slightly adhesive and fall into spaces between rocks. The incubation period for the embryos is temperature-dependent but generally lasts from 12 to 30 days. After absorbing the small amount of yolk, young walleyes begin feeding on invertebrates. After 40 to 60 days, juvenile walleyes become piscivorous. After this time, both juvenile and adult walleyes eat fish almost exclusively, frequently yellow perch or ciscoes, moving onto bars and shoals at night to feed. The walleye is often considered to have the best tasting flesh of any freshwater fish, and, consequently, is fished recreationally and commercially. Because of its nocturnal feeding habits, it is most easily caught at night using live minnows or lures that mimic small fishes. Most commercial fisheries for walleye occur in the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes but there are other locations as well. One of the best lakes for catching walleyes is Mille Lacs in central Minnesota.

How do you make your own fishing bait

There are many recipes that you can take full advantage of to help you to score the big fish. Why not make the bait at home on your own? Here are just a couple of the options that you have in fish bait recipes. Salmon Eggs: How To Cure Them There are several fish that this will work well for. If you are after largemouth bass, salmon, lake trout or muskellunge, you’ll love to use these because they will give you good results. Here’s a step by step to help you. - When cleaning your salmon, keep the egg sacs intact. - Cover a large flat surface that you can easily move with borax. - Cut the egg sacs across the membrane about three to four inches and lay them at least one inch apart on the borax. - Sprinkle more borax on top and make sure they are all covered. - Move them to an area with good circulation that is also sheltered. You do not want them in any sunlight or in any way getting wet. - Allow them to dry for two or three days and turn them about every twelve hours. - Shake off the excess borax and place them in plastic bags for storage. You can use them when they are completely dry. Or How About Some Cheese Bait? You can use this type of homemade bait to catch carp, chub, bream and catfish. Here’s what you need to do. - Roll out about ten ounces of pie pastry on your counter top. - Use mature cheddar flavor cheese to smear on the pastry. - Add six ounces of grated cheddar cheese and four ounces of blue cheese crumbles that are finely ground. - Fold that pastry over so that it is completely covering the cheese. Then, roll it out again. - Do this several times until the pastry and the cheese are completely combined. - Form into a large ball and knead it. - Place some cheddar cheese bits into the bottom of a plastic bag then place the cheese ball into it as well. Freeze it. - Once thawed the consistency is perfect and it will have a good cheese smell to it. Roll it into small balls and store in an air tight container. You can then use them next time you head out. Who said you couldn’t make your own great baits for your favorite catch? This is a great way to get some of the best baits for next to nothing as well. Go ahead and give it a try. You would be surprised how well these work.

How shark fishing can be an addiction

Shark fishing on shallow water It is a well known fact that during summertime Sharks move from the deeper waters offshore into inland waterways and beaches. The Sharks seek warmer shallow waters to carry out mating rituals and to either lay eggs or give live birth. It is very important if you are interested in swimming or in landing huge fish from the bank. There is no other type of fishing (that I know of) where the angler has an exceptional chance of hooking on to a 500lb plus fish while fishing from the bank. I was introduced to shark fishing a few years ago from an old man on the Pensacola Pier, who really knew how to catch a big fish. Shark fishing equipment needed First of all you need a powerful reel for shark fishing: a 16/0 Penn Senator from Bass Pro Shops. You also need some very strong line: 3000 yard of braided 80lb test and of course a rod to put it all on. Shark fishing From the Beach Ever since I meet that old man on the Pensacola Pier I have had the addiction of Shark Fishing since. I have been shark fishing beaches all over the South Eastern United States combing the beaches and piers for just the right sandbar, just the right current and tide. I normally rent a kayak from the local Beach Supply Store and sometimes camp outdoor, and sometimes I rent a hotel. Shark fishing bait The bait is hard to can be expensive and is often difficult to find. The best places to find fresh fish is at a fish market and usually Asian fish markets have a much wider selection to choose from. The most successful baits are Spanish Mackerels, King Mackerels, Bonito, Jack Crevelle and Mullets. Shark fishing addiction Shark fishing from beach or pier can sometimes bring in sharks over 10 feet long. If you try shark fishing ones, you might get addicted, and rush out to purchase your own equipment. I thing that Shark fishing is something the whole family can truly enjoy. It's not just about catching a shark. It's about good friends, family and beautiful beaches. If you have doubts about daring to try out shark fishing or not – don’t be afraid. Try it out and you will very soon know why I love it so much. Thank you for you time.

How to book a fly fishing trip in 3 easy steps

Did you know that fly fishing is one of the most relaxing sports around? Casting a line into a calm stream can be said to be one of life’s greatest pleasures. Fly fisherman can seem a bit fanatic in their quest for the perfect river and the perfect spot to spend the day looking for a good catch. I’ve done a little research into the world of fly fishing vacations and have come up with the three tips that can turn your next fly fishing trip into an experience to remember. 1) Consider lesser known fly fishing spots. Did you know that there is absolutely incredible fly fishing available in a lot of states that wouldn’t seem obvious at first glance? There sure is. One such spot is Montana. True pros know that Montana has a ton of incredible fly fishing spots and that you only really need to find one to make your vacation incredible. During the summer, Montana and Wyoming can become very crowded with tourists looking to visit the stunning national parks. However, these 1 week tourists might not be overly interested in visiting the secluded lakes and streams that you might love to fish in Montana. 2) Compare online deals. Orbitz and Expedia can offer some really good deals on package vacations. However, sometimes it’s best to check out discount airlines for really good deals. Southwest and JetBlue have become extremely popular airline options and they cover a good part of the US now. Booking separate hotel and (a discount) airfare might be a great option if you want to save some bucks. You should spend your money on fly fishing gear, not overpriced transportation and accommodation. 3) Canada. This is the most important tip (and overlooked destination) of all. There is nothing quite as good as saving some money during the exchange rate process. Canada is just over the border and has an absolute bounty of natural resources. Lakes, ponds, and streams team with fish. This country is a fly fisherman’s dream come true. There are tons of places that will gladly book you in for a fly fishing vacation.

    How to catch largemouth bass

Six strategies for a good day's fishing (1) Largemouth Bass like plastic worms. Purchase a variety of colours from clear to bright and in varying shades. If fish don't seem to be biting on one colour then switch for something lighter, and if they're still not biting, go for a worm darker than your original. Generally, it depends on the water colour, time of day and temperature. (2) Largemouth Bass like man-made or natural structure so look for them around jetty pylons, treefall and rock formations. They also like lots of weed so keep your eye out for a variety of spots. (3) Largemouth Bass like baitfish. Herons like baitfish too. Look out for flocks of birds diving. Quite often where you find one you'll find the other. (4) Largemouth Bass like it quiet. Fish in areas away from frenzied activity or at dawn before activities begin. Be aware though that some activity can be a bonus as the wake from passing boats can wash out the baitfish from their hiding places in the rocks and, therefore, attract the bass. (5) Largemouth Bass like deep water and shallow. Keep a variety of deep-diving lures and surface lures in the tacklebox depending on time of day, currents and water temperature. (6) Largemouth Bass like it cool. Fish early in the day if possible. If the sun is high, aim for shaded areas. To catch a Largemouth Bass Light tackle with fast-retrieving lures is usually the best, and remember, once the fish is landed, the best method of preparation for cooking is to ice immediately.

How to choose the right rod and reel

Wading through the myriad of choices in fishing gear can leave you with a headache. To begin with there are the choices between freshwater or saltwater fishing, light tackle, medium tackle, heavy tackle and even fly-fishing. When considering saltwater you also stop to consider, am I going deepwater or am going to fish near shore. Do I need a rod suitable for boat fishing or a longer rod for the beach and pier fishing? We obviously cannot address all of these in one article, so let’s take a favorite of mine, saltwater fishing. For the purposes of this article we will assume we are choosing near shore and bay fishing as opposed to offshore, deepwater fishing. This author grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida leading to a love of saltwater fishing. We have always had a number of fishing piers in the northwest Florida area where I was raised so having a boat was never a prerequisite. The main types of fishing we do in the Florida panhandle are fishing off the local piers extending into the Gulf of Mexico and wading in the local bays. When fishing off the local piers one will need fishing gear from medium to medium heavy. Fishing in the Gulf of Mexico we usually focus on the following migrational species: Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, and Cobia. Cobia will require separate instruction that goes beyond the scope of this article. Fishing for Spanish Mackerel requires a medium light to medium action rod at a minimum as the fish can reach a weight of seven or eight pounds in schools of large fish. The reel of choice should be equivalent to a Penn 4500ss or Penn 716 or better. Almost everyone chooses spinning reels for pier fishing. You want a reel that will hold at least 200 yards of 10 to 12 lb. test monofilament line and tie a steel leader of 12-14 inches to keep them from biting through the line. When fishing for King Mackerel, you will need considerably heavier fishing gear as these are considerably larger fish. King Mackerel on the Upper Gulf Coast will average around twenty pounds but “smoker” Kings of over forty pounds are not uncommon and they can take out 200 yards of fishing line off your reel in seconds! When fishing for these monsters you want to have a medium heavy rod, seven to nine feet in length and preferably paired with a Penn 706z. We favor the Penn reels here on the coast because of their durability. The thing that is special about the 706 is that it has no bail, which makes for much quicker casting. This is crucial when you are competing with several other fishermen all around you. As with the Spanish Mackerel, you will want to tie on a steel leader, but a much heavier one for the Kings. Use a leader of a 40 lb. class or better.

How to make your own homemade catfish bait

Have you ever been fishing and witnessed someone catching all the fish? I have many times. When I see someone hauling in stringers full of fish I get very curious. On occasion, I have asked about their secret techniques pertaining to equipment and bait. A lot of times I will get the polite smile and response such as “just lucky today” or “you know…same ol’ stuff.” I’ll ask what type of bait and that is usually when I will get the silent treatment. The typical response, “sorry, secret family recipe” or “if I tell you, I’ll have to kill you.” Through the years, I have collected some very useful information concerning fishing baits. The most important realization was that the people who were catching the most fish were not using store bought baits. It seems that they made their own baits. Some anglers in the past divulged some secrets pertaining to their baits. I thank them for it. I have developed my own formulas but this is not the time or place to reveal them. However, I have compiled the main ingredients found in the most potent catfish bait formulas. I want to encourage you to develop your own formulas based on these ingredients found below. You will notice that these ingredients are easy to find. You can find the majority of the supplies at a well stocked grocer. When developing your own formulas, do not use all the ingredients listed. Just take three or four items and see what happens. You are not bound to the items listed below. Feel free to test others. I have found the most important aspect of making your own bait is testing. You will need to test your homemade bait several times because maybe a certain day, the fish aren’t biting, or there are no fish, or some other variable that has nothing to do with the potency of the bait. Bring several batches of your baits on your fishing outing and test several to increase your chances of success. Another tip is to write everything down. You don’t want to develop bait and find that it is successful only to realize that you forgot how to make it. Also, you can make batches of bait for literally pennies a pound. You may store the batches in zipper plastic bags in the freezer. Since these ingredients are for developing catfish bait, I will warn you ahead of time to do your experimenting in the garage or outdoors because some of the ingredients have a pungent smell and some create a mess. 1) Uncooked oatmeal – popular as a base (keeps all the ingredients together in a doughy mixture) 2) Baking flour – another popular base 3) Corn and wheat flakes or similar types of cereals – base to keep bait on hook 4) Water – required in most cases to help make the mixture workable 5) Garlic salt – found in most store bought baits (probably a good idea if you used it also) 6) Garlic powder – similar to salt but may alter the fish attractant properties 7) Can of tuna – found in many homemade bait recipes. Maybe the old timers know something. 8) Anise oil extract – almost a requirement for all types of fishing bait 9) meats from the meat counter (raw livers, brains, fish parts) – the more blood, the better 10) canned or packaged meats such as cat food, dog food, spam, sandwich meats, hot dogs – an alternative to the raw meats 11) cheeses – smellier the better – think limburger or rotten cheddar 12) miscellaneous – fish food pellets, cattle feed pellets, molasses, gelatin mixes, can of corn, strawberry soda, bbq sauce 13) Zipper storage bags – great for mixing your ingredients, storage, and taking to fishing hole. Remember, if it smells, is bloody, or rotted, it might be a great addition to your catfish bait formula. I hope this will information will get you started in developing your own secret catfish bait. The most important tip of all is to remember to have fun. Share the experience with your family and friends. Have contests on who catches the most fish with his or her bait. I guarantee you will remember the fishing stories for the rest of your life.
