One that focuses on your current limitations and how it is affecting your swing. Once you realize what limitations are causing your swing faults…you’ll be well on your way to a perfect golf swing. How many times have you made an attempt at a golf swing only to fall off balance and mishit your shot badly? How your backswing? Have you tried and tried to make that 90 degree shoulder turn like your pro said, only to create such a tense and powerless you were ready to give up the game?     What will it take to get you to perform better golf? I’ll bet you’ve tried the gimmicky golf training aids. Did they work? How about equipment? How many drivers do you have in your garage? Am I getting your attention yet? My approach to perform better golf is through training your BODY, not buying more equipment or taking more lessons. It is your BODY that plays the game, so focus on it and the sky is the limit. I want you to think of yourself as an athlete. You probably were one at some point in your life. Did you ever do a workout for that sport you participated in? I’ll be the answer is yes. Well now your sport is golf. And to perform better golf means training specific to golf. Not going into a gym and plopping down on a machine. Not working out like a body builder. But doing exercises that are very similar to your golf swing with resistance. It angers me when I see all these so-called golf fitness books, programs and websites that say they are for golfers, but when I look into them, they are all just general fitness programs. I don’t want you to waste your time with programs like this. I want you to do exercises that will have an immediate impact on your game. That will give you the quickest return on your time and money investment. Doesn’t that sound like a winner? I have spent the better part of the last decade developing programs, books, dvds and online sites to both educate the golfer and give them easy-to-implement golf fitness exercises and programs that will have a direct impact on their game. To perform better golf you need to take this approach. If you aren’t a believer yet, just ask yourself if your game has improved in the last 6 months. Be honest. Has it? If not, what are you currently doing that you need to change? Training your body with light weights, exercise tubing, medicine balls and exercise balls is the easiest, and most affordable way to accomplish your golfing goals. Just make sure when researching programs whether it be on the net or in a bookstore, that they don’t spend all their time saying how great they are; or how “comprehensive” their programs are…but instead talk to you directly.     The idea of periodization has been around a very long time for athletes at all levels. The concept is simple. If you started with the goal in mind, let's say it was to win the Club Championship or place in the top 3 in your next Amateur event, then you would plan accordingly. Generally, an annual plan is used, although it is not uncommon to use longer periods of time especially when working with a younger developing athlete. Periodization occurs when you break down all of the segments into actual manageable parts, always keeping the long term goal in mind. Your master plan may be broken down into which phase you are in, for example, are you in your competitive stage or pre-competitive stage? This information is then used to determine which strategies offer the most benefit at any given point in time. If you use a holistic approach to golf improvement, then you also periodize each important component as in the physical, mental, technical and strategic side. While this many sound like a lot of information to track, this is the very point of periodization. Breaking down all of the important parts into simple tasks you can complete daily and/or weekly which fit comfortably and naturally into achieving your long term goal. What is the real payoff for you? Well, just like the pros, when you prepare in this manner you leave nothing to chance. You have less margin for error and a higher probability of meeting or succeeding your goals. To give you an idea of how to periodize a program for golf, first consider your competitive season, then employ the following ideas. Phase 1 - Restoring optimal flexibility or range of motion in hips, spine and shoulders. Phase 2 - Choose adaptation exercises where the main objective is to involve many muscle groups while preparing joints, tendons and ligaments for the work ahead. Build a solid base of support through stabilization exercises. Phase 3 - Build strength. Consider increasing your loads, time under tension and create an opportunity for increased force production. Phase 4 - Power production. Not you can convert all of your previous efforts to completion of the process where all energy is stored and transferred in efficient movement patterns for the benefit of your golf swing. Phase 5 - Active recovery and rest. Don't forget that every body needs a recovery period so it can maintain gains made throughout the year while protecting the body from injury.

Here are 5 things you absolutely must do in order to chip well out of a bad lie: 1. Select a club with a sharp leading edge 2. Position the ball in the middle (or back) of stance 3. Keep your hands ahead of the ball 4. Set wrists slightly earlier 5. Take a steeper attack angle on downswing No single club is ideal for hitting from a bad lie. While a sand wedge is tempting, it’s better to hit a pitching wedge or a 9 iron. Their sharper leading edges increase your chances of striking the ball solidly. Club selection, as I emphasize in my golf lessons, is almost as important as technique, so choose wisely. Also key to hitting from bad lies is your attack angle. After selecting your club assume a normal posture, with the hands ahead of the ball and the club shaft and your left arm (for right-handers) forming a direct line down to the ball positioned in the middle of your stance or toward the back of it. Lean forward slightly. The ball position and weight shift encourage a steeper angle of attack than usual. The downswing is similar to hitting a pitch shot from a clean fairway lie, except for the wrists. Set these slightly earlier in the takeaway than normally. Also critical is the centering of your weight over the ball. Coil your upper body over your flexed right knee. As you coil, you’ll shift your weight slightly backward, positioning to hit the ball with a strong descending blow. You’ll need force to punch the clubhead down into the back of the ball, driving it forward. Most of your weight should be on the front foot at impact, while your head should be centered over the ball as the clubhead cuts through the grass. Also, keep your left-hand firm. In my golf lessons I show students a photograph of a club striking the ball when hitting from a bad lie. The photo shows that the angle of the shaft relative to the target is shifted forward quite dramatically. It also shows the hands leading the clubhead through impact. A ball landing in deep rough is one of the few times on a golf course where brute force is required. Don’t change your swing; just put some muscle into it. Your main goal here is simply to get of the grass and onto the fairway, in good shape for the next shot. The last thing you want to do, as I emphasize in my golf lessons, is ending up in the rough again. Also, experiment with different clubs. Experimentation will tell you which clubs you hit best from which lie. Of course, not every pitch shot has to be perfect. So try hitting the ball close to the pin by landing on spots other than the green, such as a few feet in front of the hole, and letting the ball roll. Or, try using the green’s contour help funnel the shot to the hole. Landing in a bad lie doesn’t have to ruin a good hole. If you maintain focus, choose the right club, and make adjustments to your stance and swing, you’ll be able to hit successfully from a bad lie. Players with low golf handicaps are adept at this. Players with high golf handicaps, on the other hand, need to practice this. Once you’ve developed confidence in your ability to do so, you’ll take landing in a bad lie in stride.

But wouldn’t it be nice playing golf in other areas, not just in your usual courses which have become too ordinary for you? How about taking a golf vacation? If you are keen in seeing how golf is being played in cultures other than yours or you want to see new sights and new course golf course surroundings, then you might want to consider taking an exotic and nice golf vacation! Here are some tips to help you find the best exotic golf getaway you need. 1. Do not just rely on obtaining information only at the very last minute. You can try checking the various websites on the Internet that offer vacation packages of golf courses around the world. There are also a dozen of golf magazine reviews available in the market that offer tips on the ideal golf spots out there. It pays to do your research. 2. Determine which golf courses charge premium fees when you are playing on weekends and holidays. Find out also if they offer discounts if you play later or a certain number of hours in a day. Remember that you are still on a vacation trip; you have to save all the money you have. Play on the course if it is less expensive. 3. Do some planning ahead, especially if you are going out as a group. If you are coming to the course as a group of say, six people, you should inform the staff at the golf course before you go to the place. One player who just went to the course unregistered can still be accommodated to play even at busy periods for the course. But if you are a big group, courses require advance registration, especially during busy periods. 4. Before you actually give the number of your credit card for you to be able to reserve your reservation, ask first the policy of the club when it comes to cancellations or no-shows. Make sure that you properly inform them that you are cancelling the reservation if you have made other plans. 5. Book in advance tee times, preferably leaving home. Most golf courses at present allow you booking in advance through the course’s own website or a third-party company or agency.

         
    Play better golf strengthen your rotator cuff

     

    Many golfers are not aware of the rotator cuff and its function in golf. This group of muscles around the shoulder is crucial to the golf swing. Not surprisingly, the shoulder is one of the areas most often affected by the golf swing. Many golfers fall prey to strain and injury in this area. Since most golfers don’t realize the importance of the rotator cuff area, they don’t do any conditioning to strengthen and help prevent injury. By using a golf fitness routine that includes strength and flexibility exercises, many problems with the rotator cuff can not only be improved but prevented as well. Increasing flexibility and strengthening these muscles, will help to increase power and control in your swing. The rotator cuff is the area of the shoulder that is a supporting and strengthening structure of the shoulder joint. It is made up of the capsule of the shoulder joint blended with tendons and muscles as they pass to the capsule or across it to insert on the head of the humerus, the bone of the arm. Golf can result in what is known as a repetitive strain injury to the rotator cuff. Repeated movement of the shoulder causes it. The sheaths that cover the muscle tendons can swell and press on the nerves causing pain. Tendonitis, bursitis, and tears in the rotator cuff are common injuries for golfers. To improve your power and control of your golf swing as well as prevent injury, it is a good idea to do regular stretches and exercises designed specifically for the rotator cuff. This conditioning should be done on a regular basis both before play and in between rounds. It is especially important to warm up the rotator cuff area before exercise. This helps to increase blood flow to the deeper muscles and prepares them for activity. One simple way to warm up is by holding the arms at should level. Do at least 20 circles with both arms. The next step should be stretching exercises to help reduce tension in these muscles. Three areas should be stretched: the back, the front and the under side of the rotator cuff. Once the stretches have been completed, exercises to strengthen these muscles should be performed. After exercise, golf practice or rounds, be sure to cool down these muscles with stretching. By simply practicing a few stretches and exercises, you’ll not only help to prevent injuries, you’ll see a more powerful and controlled golf swing.

    To play better golf is the lifelong pursuit of every golfer on the planet. Why else would we subject ourselves to one of the most humbling games (sport) ever? I mean, how many times have you come off the course ready to give it up? I’m dead serious! You drive home saying never again! But…you go to the range the next day, or even the same day, after you’ve cooled down. Man, what a glutton for punishment! Just hours before, you got totally humiliated, and now you’re back for more. The vicious cycle a golfer goes through every season. So let me guess. You’ve bought equipment (lots of it). Taken lessons. And pound hundreds of balls every week. Am I close? The 6 million dollar question is…have you gotten better? Are you happy with your game? Are you driving it as far as you’d like? If not, what now? There’s only one thing left. YOU! You’re body is keeping you from the game of your dreams. The game you know you’re capable of playing. Doesn’t that make sense? If you’ve tried all the above and still are not satisfied. Here’s what you have to do…immediately! Diagnose your limitations. Is it strength? Is it flexibility? Or how about stamina? You know it’s a strength issue, if your swing mechanics are good, but you’re not hitting the ball any amount of distance. It’s a flexibility issue if you if you can’t perform consistent swings with proper mechanics. And it’s obviously a stamina issue if your back nine is worse than your front nine. Once you come up with your personal limitations, you’ve got to set up a program, or search one out that will get you on the right track and not hurt your game. Working on your limitations will get you the quickest results, in the shortest amount of time. You’ll be amazed at how much better your swing is and how much farther you’re hitting the ball. Your golf will become enjoyable again, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t take this approach years ago. Remember, it’s NEVER too late to start! NEVER!
