How your golf driver swing can have more power

: A golf driver swing that is lacking in power has a couple of issues that need to be addressed. A golf driver swing is slightly different than your other clubs...but needs to have the same sequence of motion and body position at impact to produce more power and distance of the tee. Most golfers swing outside their physical capabilities resulting in lost yardage and accuracy. Has this ever happened to you? You step up on a long par 4 or a par 5 and tell yourself you’re going to get their in two. What did you do differently on the tee to achieve it? Did you swing harder? If so, what was your result? The first issue to cover with your golf driver swing is your range of motion, especially on your backswing. Can you make a 90 degree shoulder turn with minimal tension? Most older golfers don’t even come close. The optimal position is a 90 degree shoulder turn, with approximately 45 degrees of hip turn. This requires a high level of core strength and flexibility. Shoulder flexibility comes into play just a bit also. If you can’t get to this position, it doesn’t matter how hard you swing…you’re still not going to maximize your power and distance with your driver. Trying to get to that position when you body cannot physically get there will only cause muscle tension, which slows clubhead speed. Secondly, getting behind the ball and staying behind the ball at impact is critically to maximizing power and distance. This cannot be achieved with an “out-of-shape” body. It’s a physically impossibility. Even for a fit golfer, this is sometimes hard to accomplish on a consistent basis. On the downswing, it is critical the first move is with the lower body rotating (not sliding). This rotation of the lower body, while the upper body stays back (for only a split second) takes a ton of core strength. A weaker golfer would not be able to achieve this. He/she would come over the top early with the upper body, merely because they don’t have core strength to initiate the downswing with the lower body. So how do you achieve a golf driver swing with maximum power? Start working on your core strength and flexibility from a rotational standpoint, with a golf weight training and golf stretching routine. Every exercise and stretch you do should incorporate rotational movements. The primary movement in the golf swing is rotational, so why wouldn't you focus on that in your golf training program? This is the quickest way to longer drives! Hitting more balls with the same body and the same swing won’t get you there! You’ve got to address the physical component to achieve the mechanical efficiency with your driver. As soon as you do, you’ll be blowing by the other players in your foursome! This IS the approach you should take with your golf driver swing.

Hydration tips for the golf course

Since golf is a warm weather sport – and often a hot weather sport – ensuring that you are properly hydrated is essential. If you don’t drink enough water, your body is not going to perform as well as it should and your golf game is sure to suffer. Rather than loading up at infrequent golf course drink stations, you are better off drinking smaller amounts regularly. In order to do this, you should carry a water bottle or two with you. Continue to sip away at them, and refill them as needed when you do reach water stations. A good rule of thumb is to drink eight ounces of fluid before you even tee off, then continue to drink four to eight ounces every 15 minutes of play. If you are playing a long round and will miss a meal, you may want to consider bringing a meal replacement drink. This is generally a dry powder mixed with water that can be used in the absence of a meal or to replace fluids. These will keep you hydrated, and help keep your blood sugar level in check. Many recreational golfers have a beer or two on the course. Keep in mind that alcohol dehydrates you; it does not count as drinking fluids to keep you hydrated. If you do choose to drink any alcohol while playing, be sure that you limit your consumption and include non-alcoholic beverages as well. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink, because at this point your body is already dehydrated. Drink before heading out and continue to drink through your entire round. Dehydration creates fatigue, makes you uncomfortable and can cause you to lose your mental focus – an important element in the game of golf. Diet and nutrition are just as important as fitness when it comes to creating a body that is optimized for a great game of golf. Be sure you keep hydration in mind each time you play.

Ideas for a get away golfing adventure

Been working too hard for too long? Need to get away and play some golf, you will want to check out golf holidays package vacations from your travel agent. Travel arrangements are often referred to as "stay and play" plans because you stay at a certain hotel and receive rights to play at a certain golf course while you are there. When making these arrangements, make sure there are not special requirements that will make playing inconvenient or impossible for you. Some of these plans require you to limit your arrival dates and departure dates or have other unacceptable limits so read the fine print. You can take a golf adventure to all sorts of locations depending wants and desires. For example, you can choose to golf in a course located near or in a major city, taking in museums or theatres when not golfing or you might choose to visit a golf course in an area of rugged natural beauty such as the mountains. While there, you might take a day to fish instead of golf. Whatever your needs, you can find all types of different golfing packages to meet your needs. Are you going to take your own golf clubs with you when you travel on your golfing adventure? You probably would prefer to use them rather than the clubs that can be rented at the course to which you are traveling. If you choose to take them with you, you will need to think about the arrangements a bit. For instance, do you have a really high quality golf club bag which will protect those expensive golf clubs. If not, you'd better get one. You won't be able to carry your clubs on if you are flying, so you'll need a bag that can take airport luggage handling and still protect your clubs. So get a good one. When picking a destination for a golf adventure, pick the course you wish to play on first, and then find out about lodging at hotels, resorts, or stay and play package plans. Make sure the tee times that are set for you when choosing a stay and play package are going to work for you. People who are staying at a golf course's own resort generally get first serve when choosing tee times. If it's really important to you to get the tee time you desire, it may be worth it to you to stay at the resort instead of a less expensive hotel. Either way, you are sure to find refreshment and restoration when going on you golfing adventure.

    Improve golf driving distance

How do I improve my golf driving distance? I hear this question daily. This is the dream of almost every amateur golfer. To hit it longer. But to improve golf driving distance isn’t what you think. No it’s not your equipment. It’s not pounding more balls at the range. And it’s not even taking more lessons. It’s about working on the machine that swings the club. Are you following me? Do you know what I’m getting at? You’re an athlete if you play golf. Don’t laugh. I’m serious! To swing a golf club effectively takes a tremendous amount of golf specific strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and stability. None of the above can be accomplished without an optimum level of golf specific fitness. When was the last time you made a swing and felt like it was an effortless, full and produced maximum power? I’m sure it’s happened on occasion, but not as often as you want right? The reason why is your body can’t produce a repetitively powerful swing. It’s not capable of it. Why? Because you need to work on it ‘off the course’ with simple golf strength and stretches to build up the golf specific muscles that can make this happen. To improve golf driving distance you must take this attitude. If not, be ready to accept the same swing, game and results you’ve been getting for a long time. I don’t mean to mix words, but the truth is needed. No sugar-coating! This is “throwing all the cards on the table” and deciding how bad you want to improve your golf driving distance. Golfers have been bombarded with ads about the latest-greatest driver, guaranteed to add 30 yards to your driving distance. I say bs on that. It’s you that swings that club. Doesn’t matter what club you have if your body is in poor condition. The critical area to work on for the quickest results is your core (mid-section). Your core is the engine that drives the swing and produces all the power. You’ve got to strengthen this area from a rotational standpoint to improve golf driving distance. Not only will this approach improve your golf driving distance, but it will eliminate low back pain and injury. Low back pain is the most common complaint among golfers. It’s no wonder since the golf swing is such a torquing movement that directly affects the lower back if you have weak and restricted muscles. The benefits far outweigh the effort involved. Longer drives, no more injuries and years of golf enjoyment. There’s no better return than that. So take a different approach to improve golf driving distance.

Improve golf swing the non traditional way

Improve golf swing seems like a thought that is on our minds as golfers dozens of times per day. Do you agree? But what are you currently doing to improve your golf swing? Let me take a guess. Spending money on lessons, that may-or-may-not be working? How about the latest-greatest driver? Did it lower your score? Golf balls? They say the Titleist ProV1 makes a ton of difference. Has it for you? I could go on-and-on but I won’t. I think you get the idea. So I’ve mentioned some very common, ‘traditional ways’ to try to improve your golf swing. But I haven’t mentioned the MOST important one. Do you want to take a guess? Have you read any of my other 200 hundred or so articles floating around the web and in newspapers? If you haven’t then you may not know what I’m going to say. But if you have…you know exactly what I’m going to say! Look in the mirror…that’s your answer! No this isn’t a joke. No I’m not trying to yank your chain. I’m trying to get you to realize what is holding you back. It’s not taking lessons. It’s not buying more equipment or $40 golf balls. It’s getting right at the heart of the matter! Your ‘physical limitations’ are keeping you from making a mechanically sound and repeatable golf swing. Think just for a minute! If your body can’t make a 90 degree shoulder turn…it’s a fact you will lose a TON of yardage off the tee and with your irons. If you can’t maintain your golf posture throughout your entire golf swing…you have no chance to swing consistently for 18 holes. If your core is weak…you will not be able to generate any power going into impact, therefore you will see a weak shot that most likely goes ‘offline’ quickly. Can you see the picture more clearly now? So what do you do? You go see a local golf fitness professional who will take you through a golf fitness evaluation to determine your weaknesses and limitations and draw up a plan to improve them. If you don’t have someone in your area…or the cost is a bit too steep; do a search online for golf fitness, golf training or even golf exercises and see what you come up with. FYI – make sure to pick the first few ‘non-colored’ results on the search pages. These are the ‘real’ results…not paid advertisements. You want to find a product or program that covers every facet of golf improvement…that you can afford. This is the next best thing to having your own golf fitness trainer.

Improve strength for golf to reach your true potential

Strength for golf is a term you’ve all heard by now. It’s all over the television during professional tournaments, and golf instructors are now throwing the term around. What makes strength for golf so important and why should you listen? Let me briefly explain. The golf swing is traumatic to the body! I can’t put it any simpler than that. When you are swing an object that is over 3 feet long at over 85 mph, there is a physical cost. The physical cost is undo stress on the major joints of the body. The lower back is the most common area to get injured, along with the hips, shoulders, knees and even wrists. If your body is physically weak and restricted (low level of flexibility), you will have a minimal chance at playing good golf and staying injury-free as well. How many times have you gone to the range or the course, only to come home with your lower back stiff, aching or in pain? What about other body parts? I’ll be you’ve felt your hip joints or maybe even your shoulder joints at some point. If you saw a slow motion video of the human body swinging a club, you’d be shocked. The body is put in some torqued positions throughout the swing. When the body is weak it breaks down. That’s a fact! In comes strength for golf! By working your golf specific muscles, you will not only improve your swing mechanics quickly, but your game will transform. You will feel like a different golfer on the course. Your playing partners will be in awe. You may think I’m hyping this up, but all the above is true! You will quickly realize this has been the missing link to your golf game improvement all along. And don’t ever think it’s too late to start a program of strength for golf.

Improve your body and watch your swing transform

Improve your body to maximize your swing. This may sound like an oxymoron, but I can speak for over 10,000 golfers worldwide who have done it. Through my online golf performance membership site, dvds and books, I’ve heard back from over 10,000 golfers the past 6 years who have seen dramatic improvements in the their swing and game. I have been preaching the theory of “improve your body, to improve your swing” for over 10 years now…and golfers from all over the world are finally believing it! Turn on the television while a professional tournament is on and you’ll hear the commentator mentioned golf fitness within 5 minutes. All the pros are doing it, so why wouldn’t you? Your body dictates your golfing ability! Period! Try to prove me wrong. This may sound like a bold statement, but a physically limited body will have no chance at optimal swing mechanics that are repeatable for 18 holes. How many times have you been paired up with a senior golfer who couldn’t make a full backswing; or stay in his golf swing? It’s a rampant problem! As golfers get older, their body’s decline rapidly. With this decline in both strength and flexibility comes a huge loss of distance with all the clubs; and a game that gets more inconsistent the more you play it. I can guarantee you 100% that if you improve your body, your swing will take care of itself. No more band aid swing fixes. No more gimmicky training aids. And not as many lessons are needed to see dramatic improvement in your swing. Your power and consistency will be the most notable improvement by improving your body and your swing. I’m not talking about hours a day in a sweaty gym! I’m talking about 30-40 minutes 2-3 times a week in your home, with minimal equipment. That’s it! Nothing more, nothing less! So don’t hesitate! Improve your body and your swing will be awesome!

Improve your golf game right now

Improve your golf game right now you say? I say, absolutely! Don’t waste another dime on new golf equipment: taking one more lesson; or hitting one more ball at the range, until you finish reading this article. You see…it’s not what you think that’s not allowing you to improve your golf game. It’s something very simple and easy to remedy. It’s YOU! How your body moves throughout your golf swing. Let me ask you…do you feel nice and loose, relaxed and fluid when you swing a club on the golf course? Do you feel like your backswing is what it should be? How about your distance off the tee? Are you happy with it? Now let me ask. What have you done to improve the above situation? And has it worked up to now? If it has…congratulations! I am very happy to hear that another golfer is improving. If it isn’t working…don’t you think you should try a different approach? One that makes total sense from a mechanical (technique) standpoint. If you’ve tried all the above…there’s only one thing left. As I said above…YOU! Your body is what swings the club and produces the end-result. Not the equipment, balls or all the lessons you take. You’ve got to start with the engine (your body) first, to be able to make a mechanically sound and repeatable swing for 18 holes of golf. Your body has physical limitations. All of ours does. Each person is unique, and has a different set of physical issues that need to be addressed. But when they are…look out! The game gets much easier and a whole lot funner. With our country getter bigger (heavier) by the day…this is a great reason to embark on a golf training program that will not only improve your golf game, but help you achieve your health goals also. Now isn’t that reason enough to get started right away? You will be amazed at your fast rate of golf improvement once you take this approach. You will be making swings and producing power you’ve never seen before. Why? Because you are eliminating your physical limitations that have kept you from achieving the golf swing you know you are capable of. The jury is out! All the pros are doing it. You’ve got to be next! It’s time to improve your golf game once and for all!

Improve your golf game with this secret weapon

Any golfer who has made any effort to improve their golf game will have already heard the often-repeated expression that golf is all in the mind and that the game starts there. But what many golfers do not know is that they fail to improve their golf game because their minds are not prepared for what they must do to make significant progress. Mention the word ‘exercise’ to most amateur golfers and rather than getting enthusiastic about using it to improve their golf game, they will start seeing images of heavy sweating from rigorous exercises. The sort of rigorous exercises that super athletes in the NFL or NBA have to do regularly in some gym. Their minds are tightly shut to the idea of exercises such that they can never get to the point where they can examine the subject deeper to find out what sort of exercises professional golfers do to improve their golf game and maintain the quality of their performances as much as possible. These golfers will not have heard that senior citizens, some of them in the advanced age category of 80 years old, have successfully undertaken golf-specific exercises. The result has been that their golf games have improved tremendously. Surely an 80 year olds' physical condition will not take the sort of exercises many amateur golfers fear and want to avoid. So these golf exercises are not what most amateur golfers think. Unless a golfer is prepared to approach the subject with an open mind, it will be very difficult for them to improve their golf game. While the mind is a very powerful tool, having a body that is physically prepared will produce the best results from a golf mind set on winning. To really improve your golf game you need to start with an open mind.

Improve your golf performance with these 5 tips

Improve your golf performance. Is that always on your mind? When you go out to golf you’re hoping for a good round. I know I do. How often does your outcome match what you hoped for? Do you usually shoot the scores you had envisioned before you teed off? If not, do you ever evaluate where and how you could have saved strokes and avoided those blow up holes? I’ve got 5 easy tips for you to implement immediately that will improve your golf performance by shaving 4-6 or even more strokes off your score the next time you play. Give them a try and see what happens. Here they are: 1. First off you’ve got to put the proper fuel in your body before you leave home. Most golfers don’t give it a second thought. They either don’t eat at all before they leave home or they eat something that is not going to give them the long-term energy they’re hoping for. So whether it’s lunch or breakfast before you leave you need to consume a complex carbohydrate and a good protein source. This combination will warrant the best use of your energy for the long haul. An example for breakfast would be a bowl of oatmeal and a couple of egss with a piece of fruit or a juice. For lunch you could have a turkey sandwich on whole wheat with a piece of fruit. Lot’s of lettuce on the sandwich and try to avoid mayonnaise or butter. 2. The second tip is to properly warm up your body before you even hit your first ball. I see so many golfers show up 5 minutes before tee time, hack a few balls and head to the first tee. Those golfers are headed for a double bogey right off the bat - but hey they’re just getting “warmed up” right? A better approach is to give yourself at least 30 minutes before your tee time. First do some dynamic (movement oriented) stretches to prepare your body to perform. Things like arm circles, partial squats, toe touches, etc. Then take some half swings with a 7 iron. Now after that you’re ready to hit some wedges. You’ll find with this approach your hits on the range will be much better, which will build your confidence. 3. Drink lots of water even before you leave your house. Try to consume up to a gallon of Water before you get to the course. This will help you absorb and digest your pre-game meal and hydrate your muscles for optimal performance. Don’t take this lightly. Dehydration causes energy loss, lack of focus and concentration and fatigue later in the round. And remember, that’s before you even come to the course. Once you get their you should be drinking water every hole. 4. Don’t wait ‘til you get tight to stretch on the course. You should be constantly moving your body and stretching your joints while you play. I see and hear too many golfers complaining of tight lower backs or shoulders during the round, What amazes me is that with all that complaining they do nothing about it. Why? Think of your body as a machine. If the machine starts to break down – fix it. I mean stretch those areas while you’re playing. You’ll see a big difference in your swing mechanics late in the round. 5. Snack while you play. No I don’t mean the full meal at the turn with a beer. I mean bringing fruit and nutrition bars to eat every 4-6 holes. When you supply your body with the proper nutrients your energy levels stay balanced and you will avoid those mental lapses late in the round. How many times have you had a good score only to blow up late in the round? I’ll bet more than a couple of times. I know I have. Treat your body like a Ferrari not a Ford Pinto. These tips if applied, will definitely improve your golf performance!

Improve your golf swing quickly i ll give you one guess

Here's a fast...easy..."no-brainer" way to improve your golf swing...add a quick 10-20 yards with every club...and the best part...you can do it in your home...in less than 30 minutes. I have been approached by thousands of golfers via the net and on the golf course...with the same question...in frustration..."what can I do to improve my golf swing?" I've heard all about the dozens of lessons they've taken and the thousands of dollars they've spent on equipment...all to play the "same"...and NOT improve their golf swing. Why do you think this is? I can tell you why in less than one sentence. IT'S YOUR BODY! Grab a cup of your favorite beverage (mines good 'ol java)...sit in your most comfortable chair...and hear me out. To hit a golf ball...what takes place? Let's briefly go over it. Now stay with me on this...it's going to make sense in a minute. Get ready for that "ah-ha" moment. Here goes: * You physically grab the club with your hands. * You physically bend over and get in your address position. * You physically take the club back, hoping for a full backswing. * You physically attempt to return the club back to impact with stored energy. * You physically try to stay in your golf posture until the end of your swing. O. K., that's enough. Do you see where I'm going with this? Why is this important to know, and how you can use it to quickly improve your golf swing? The answer is simple: Because of all these common references given above are the result of your body's ability to accomplish these golf swing movements, with proper swing mechanics. If you have "physical" restrictions (which the average golfer...especially as we age...has many) that won't allow you to perform these optimal golf swing mechanics, you have a minimal (if not "any") chance to optimize your golf potential. That's the bad news! The good news is you don't have to settle.. you have the control to fix your faults..that is...if you "know" what they are. Here's what I mean. For starters...if you have a restriction in your hamstring flexibility, you won't be able to get into proper golf posture...and for sure...not maintain it for 18 holes. The result is many mishits because of fatigue and your body's fear of pain. At the end of the round, you end up with a sore back..and wonder if you should cancel that next round of golf. Here's another one. If your legs are weak...you will have no stability in your golf swing. Your legs will be moving (sliding) side to side...and straightening, when they should stay flexed. The result again is...inconsistency...lack of power...and a predisposition to chronic injuries, due to compensations your body will make...keeping you "off the course" for long periods of time. This is why I am a golf fitness professional. I have passion for the game...and a goal to educate as many golfers as humanly possible...to stop the frustration.

Improve your golf swing a different way

You have probably tried everything, from following advice that worked for your friends to so called ‘tips from experts.’ So what else can you really do to improve your golf swing? Actually there is plenty you can do, as long as you are prepared to change your mindset. Thinking “outside the box” is a common expression we all like to use in boardrooms and offices these days, and yet the mindset or prejudices we have still hang heavily and hinders many people from making progress at anything. The situation is really very much the same when it comes to any attempt to improve your golf swing. You my have heard that professionals do work outs of sorts but your mindset keeps you from even taking a look to find out whether the exercises are really as strenuous and vigorous as you fear they may be. Meanwhile 70 year old and 80 year old men and women continue to dramatically improve their golf swing taking simple exercises and work outs that even help to improve their general health. Difficult to get out of the sort of mindset that emphasizes that golf is a leisure activity where workouts have no place, no matter how light. At least that’s the sort of golf you want to play. So do you really have a chance of ever getting to improve your golf swing? I really do not think so. To improve your golf swing you really have to be prepared to look at things from a slightly different perspective. And maybe to take a closer look at why other people’s games and most important their golf swing has improved so much.

Improve your golf swing and driving distance with golf stretches

The golf swing is arguably one of the most difficult athletic actions to perform. The golf swing requires you to draw the golf club through a long range of motion with proper technique and exact timing. Any error in swing plane, timing, or sequence will cause your golf swing to suffer, and suffer it will. Unfortunately, the result of your golf swing suffering will be errant shots, poor golf scores, and frustration on the golf course. Often the amateur is at a lost for why their golf swing results in errant shots. Countless hours are spent at the range in an effort to improve their golf swing. Hundreds or even thousands of dollars are spent on lessons each year, and not to mention the purchasing of new equipment. It all adds up to a lot of time and money spent on improving the golf swing. Unfortunately, for many amateur golfers their handicaps and score never improve. Leading to the question “why is my golf game not improving?” If this is you and this question lingers in your mind. The answer to your question could easily be staring right back at you in the mirror. The failure of improvement may have absolutely nothing to do with the driver you are swinging, the teaching pro helping you with your swing, or even your practice routine. It could all do with you! Yes you, the physical body swinging the golf club. Keep in mind the golf club does not perform the mechanics of the golf swing. Nor do the mechanics of the golf swing execute themselves without you. It is you and your body executing the mechanics of the golf swing. The point to make is your body directly affects the mechanics of the golf swing. Additionally, the golf swing requires your body to encompass certain physical qualities to execute the mechanics of the golf swing correctly. These physical qualities are certain levels of flexibility, muscular strength, balance, and power. If you are lacking the minimal amounts of flexibility, balance, strength, and power to execute the golf swing correctlypensations will occur even before you swing the golf club. For example, let’s look at your flexibility. The golf swing requires you to draw the golf club through a large range of motion. The backswing requires a full shoulder turn to set the club in the correct slot for the downswing, and the finish position is almost a mirror image of the backswing. In order to perform these parts of the golf swing correctly, the muscles of your body must be flexible. An inflexible body in which muscles are “tight” creates restrictions in movement. Restrictions in movement in relation to the golf swing will undoubtedly result in limitations pertaining to golf swing. The limitation will impede you from creating a full shoulder turn and balanced finish position. This causes compensations in the mechanics of the golf swing. The entire body needs to be flexible for the golf swing. Certain muscles more than others are involved in the golf swing, and if these muscles are “tight” they will directly affect your golf swing. One such set of muscles is your hamstrings. The hamstrings (back side of your upper leg) are often “tight” and cause problems to many people, not just golfers. However, they have a profound effect on the golf swing and it is not a good effect. Hamstrings that are “tight” are in a shortened position. The shortened position of the hamstrings has a direct effect on the position of your hips. Your hips will be “tucked”, directly affecting your posture. This in itself can hamper the ability to place oneself in the correct position at address within the golf swing, not to mention maintaining a proper spine angle during the swing. Additionally, “tight” hamstrings place an undo amount of stress on the lower back. Large amounts of stress on the lower back cause fatigue, soreness, and increase the possibility of injury. If you are a golfer that has ever experienced lower back pain you know the effect it has on your ability to swing the golf club correctly. A combination of a postural change and undo amounts of stress on the lower back, just begin to scratch the surface of the effect inflexible muscles can have on the golf swing. “Tight” muscles change the kinematics of the body. As a result, the biomechanics of the golf swing must be altered. These alterations usually lead to compensations in the mechanics of the golf swing resulting in errant shot patterns on the golf course. And no matter what you do in terms of practice or instruction these alterations will not go away until you address them. Just as you address swing faults, you must address flexibility faults. Flexibility faults can be addressed through golf stretches. Golf stretches enhance the flexibility of your body in relation to the golf swing. Golf stretches often times return muscles that are “tight” such as the hamstrings to their proper length. This results in the ability of your body to perform the biomechanics of the golf swing correctly. If you are one of many golfers who are not finding their golf swing improving through practice and instruction. Take a moment and look at the body swinging the golf club. This very well may be the root of your golf swing problems. Fix your flexibility faults through golf stretches and find yourself on the road to lower golf scores and more enjoyment in the game of golf. Sean Cochran

Improve your golf swing by focusing on your finish position

Watch the pros on Tour and notice how in-control they look at the finish position of the their golf swing. Why? Because they are! They are in perfect balance. Even the pro who might look a little “crooked” at the end of the swing has a balanced swing. Vijay, who is slightly bent to the side at the finish position of his driver, is still in perfect balance. How often do you think an amateur practices or even thinks about his or her finish position? Probably never. I would surmise that once contact has been made with the golf ball, most amateurs’ thoughts shift to the ball flight rather than where our body is finishing the swing. Why is the finish position so important to a successful golf swing? And beyond that being in a balanced finishing position? The finish position is directly related to two very important concepts involved in the golf swing. Number one is swing plane and clubhead is number two. The swing plane is defined as the path on which the golf club should travel upon during the swing. A quick review of the swing plane tells us that beginning with the address position, into the backswing, onto to the downswing, into impact, to follow through, and completing with the finish position, the golf club is intended to travel on a specific arch. This arch is a result of the biomechanics of the golf swing sequencing properly. In other words, everything working with the correct timing. Think of the club traveling in a circle during the swing. This imaginary circle is your swing plane and it dissects your back shoulder on the backswing and transition phases of the swing. Returns to the same position as you started at impact with the ball, and dissects your front shoulder during the follow through into the finish position. If the golfer maintains the clubhead on this path during the swing this is an indication that the mechanics of the swing are being performed properly. What does a balanced finishing position have to do with the swing plane? A balanced finishing position is yet another indicator that, number one, the golf club is following the correct swing plane, and number two, the golfer is performing the mechanics of the swing in the correct sequencing with proper timing. Secondly, the finish position is directly related to what is referred to as “feeling” the clubhead. Ask any Tour player they will tell you that they can “feel” the clubhead at any moment during the swing. Completing the swing in a balanced finish position requires you to be “tension” free and feeling the club head through the entire swing. Now the bigger question is, how does the amateur golfer get to a balance finish position? Easier said than done. To develop “feel” in the swing, maintain the proper swing path, and develop a balanced finish position requires mastering three principles. Principle number one is proper swing mechanics. In order to develop “feel” and correct swing path requires the golfer to develop the correct mechanics of the swing. Not only do you need to learn the different fundamentals of the swing, you need to train yourself to put these fundamental in proper sequence. Principle number two is the body. The body swings the club. Your body must have the flexibility, balance capabilities, strength, endurance, and power to perform the mechanics of the swing. If the body is unable to take the club on the proper swing plane because of a lack of flexibility or lacks the power to develop clubhead speed. The ability to maintain a proper swing path, and finish in a balanced position will be compromised. Principle number three is practice. In order to develop the proper swing plane, create “feel” for the club, master the mechanics of the swing, and develop a body to support the swing, you must practice the swing and train the body. Over time this will result in the development of components of a proper golf swing. The amateur will often leave out one of the three principles. If the golfer does not practice, train the body, or develop swing mechanics, it is unlikely ou will keep the clubhead on the correct swing plane. Bottom line, a balanced finish position is a very good indicator that particular swing was efficient. It also should tell you that your body is flexible, strong, and powerful.

Improve your golf swing by improving your tempo

We have all heard the word tempo in relation to the golf swing. Announcers on television speak of the “great” tempo Ernie Els has in his golf swing. What does tempo mean to the amateur and their golf swing? Tempo in the Golf Swing Tempo in the golf swing is a combination of many parts. Tempo is part timing in all aspects of the golf swing. It is part sequencing of each position within the golf swing, and it is part “feel”. Putting all these golf swing parts together creates tempo in your own golf swing. Interconnecting each phase of the golf swing; address, take-away, backswing, transition, downswing, impact, and follow through is one part of tempo, Performing each of these phases with the correct timing is also tempo. And finally “feel” for the clubhead is part of tempo. We can probably say tempo is the end goal of all our practice and time spent on our golf swing. Once we have developed tempo in the golf swing, there is definitely a level of mastery within it. How Do We Develop Tempo in the Golf Swing? A great question that does not have a simple answer: Developing tempo in the golf swing is a task that requires patience, practice, and time. There really are no short cuts to developing it within your golf swing. One practice session at the driving range will not do it. The use of a single training aide will not get you there. The implementation of a golf fitness program will not achieve this task on its own. I say this because developing a PGA Tour type golf swing requires a “basket of tools” in your arsenal. Developing tempo and a silky smooth golf swing requires you to: § Receive proper instruction on the fundamentals of the golf swing § Maintain a consistent practice schedule with your golf swing § Use swing drills to develop every as of your golf swing § The possible implementation of training aides into your practice sessions § Implementing of golf fitness program to develop your body around the golf swing. The “basket of tools” listed above put together can lead you to developing great tempo in your golf swing. It requires a comprehensive approach in which no short cuts can be made. Let’s take a look at the bullet points above to get a better understanding of how to go about this process. Proper Instruction in the Mechanics of the Golf Swing Learning the fundamentals of the golf swing is key to developing tempo. This can be achieved through quality instruction. This will allow your body to learn the nuances of the swing. This is the first step in developing tempo. Consistent Practice of the Golf Swing As they say practice makes perfect. In order for your body to learn and be able to repeat to proper mechanics of the golf swing, you must practice on a consistent basis. The body learns biomechanical movements through repetition. The golf swing is no different. Repetition through proper practice session is the second key to developing tempo. Swing Drills to Develop the Golf Swing The golf swing as a whole is one of the most intricate athletic movements to perform. In its entirety, it is a very difficult movement to perform and master. It is best when learning the golf swing to break it down into parts. Breaking the golf swing down into segments allows you more easily to master each phase of the swing. This is accomplished through the implementation of golf swing drills. Swing drills break the swing down into manageable parts. Training Aides in Association with Your Golf Swing Drills Training aides assist the body in developing the golf swing. Think of training aides as “training wheels” on a bicycle. They simply help your body learn certain movements and positions associated with the golf swing. Implementing a Golf Fitness Program Your body swings the golf club and performs the biomechanics of the golf swing. In order to perform the biomechanics of the golf swing correctly. It is necessary for your body to have certain levels of flexibility, balance, endurance, strength, and power. If your body is lacking any of this aforementioned list learning the biomechanics of the golf swing correctly will be very difficult. A golf fitness program is the final key to developing tempo in your golf swing. Summary To summarize the development of tempo in your golf swing requires a “basket of tools”. Tempo requires; proper instruction on the golf swing, consistent practice of your golf swing mechanics, the utilization of swing drills, training aides, and a golf fitness program. Put all of these aspects together and a golf swing with tempo will be yours. Sean
