Invest in a golf cart and save your energy for the game

If you've been playing golf for a while, you know that your golf bag can get quite heavy after just a few holes. While the heaviness of the golf bag isn't enough to keep you from getting out on the green, it does wear on you and you'll find that you are tired after the end of a day of golf. One of the best ways to prevent fatigue after a great game of golf is to invest in a golf cart also known as a golf trolley. These awesome little contraptions can help you maneuver your golf bag and gear from hole to hole allowing you to concentrate on your game. A golf trolley may not be an ideal investment for golfers that only get out on the course once a year, but if you play even a couple times a month you'll find that a golf caddy is one of the best investments you'll ever make where your golf game is considered. While carrying your golf bag isn't the end of the world and doesn't require extreme strength, many avid golfers simply find that the extra fatigue after 12 or 18 holes simply isn't worth it because it does detract from their concentration as well as their accuracy. If you've noticed this, you should definitely look into a golf cart of some kind. There is a golf caddy for everyone, no matter where they play or how often. There are several types of golf carts for you to choose from. There are electric or motorized golf cart options, golf pull cart options, and even a golf caddy that is controlled with a remote so that your clubs are carried throughout the course literally hands free. How much you play will really depend on what type of golf cart is for you, but with a wide selection out there every golf player will find something that is right for him or herself. One of the best golf carts currently offered is the Golf Caddy X2. The X2 golf caddy is an electric cart that will help you guide your golf gear through the courses very simply and easily. You don't have to worry about the X2 tearing up the green or being too noisy and disturbing other golfers. This is a high quality electric golf cart that will allow you to enjoy your golf game all that much more. The price of the X2 is right around $500.00 which isn't all that bad if you consider all that it will do for you and how much easier your golf game has just become. If you are really looking for a state of the art electric golf trolley, you should definitely look into the remote control golf caddy known as the Caddy X3R. This is an awesome golf bag cart that will allow you to truly move your golf gear from hole to hole with very little effort. A push of the button on the tiny remote that will fit easily into your pocket will have your cart guided right to you. Again, this is not a noisy or destructive golf caddy, so you will be allowed to use it on the greens if need be. This extremely upscale golf caddy can be purchased for right about $800.00, which is impressive for the technology it offers. If you don't golf often enough to spend much on a golf cart, you can always opt for a golf pull cart. This is simply a cart on two wheels that will make guiding your golf gear from hole to hole much easier. There will be no shoulder fatigue as you maneuver around the course; you simply have to pull your golf bag along with you.

Is golf practice all you need for lower scores

Golf is a very demanding sport, both physically and mentally. Most recreational golfers would love to have a more powerful swing and lower their handicaps. Good instruction from a teaching pro and practice of what you’ve learned can help lower your scores. There is however, more to achieving consistent improvement. It’s great to go to the driving range and practice. Unfortunately, sometimes you’re further embedding the wrong movement patterns into your swing. To achieve the most from your instruction and practice time, there is another segment of your game that should be constantly evaluated. While it is receiving more attention of late, there’s still many avid golfers that don’t include this important factor into their strategy. What’s the secret? One of the best ways to achieve and maintain overall improvement on the course is to perform a golf fitness routine on a regular basis. This can do wonders to improve power and consistency. Strength, balance, and flexibility play a major role in the effectiveness of your golf swing. I’m not talking about body building, but rather simply toning and conditioning your body for the movements required during a round of golf. The golf swing places complex demands on the body. There must be mental concentration, neuromuscular coordination, balance, and muscular strength and flexibility all functioning at the same time during the few seconds it takes to make your swing. Most teaching professionals will admit one of the major reasons their students don’t progress to the next level of play is due to lack of muscular strength and flexibility. By conditioning your body using what’s called the principles of functional training for golf, you can prepare your body for every movement required on the course. Functional fitness is designed to mimic the movements of the golf swing. All the components required for an effective golf swing can be improved. So, instead of hitting thousands of golf balls on the driving range, why not tone up the fuel for your golf club…your body. You’ll not only improve your performance on the course, you’ll be better conditioned for the demands of daily life.

Is there any cure for golf putting problems

It is perhaps the supreme irony in golf that the simplest shot in the book seems to cause the biggest problem to the largest number of golfers. Let's face it, the putt is the only golf shot that it is really possible to execute flawlessly without any tuition at all. We all start off doing this as kids. Some of us are even superb at it at this young age. It is this shot that is often the spur that leads to a lifelong addiction to this wonderful game of golf. What then, goes wrong? How can this easiest of golf shots become the absolute bane of an adult golfer's life? Sorry to say, there is no easy answer. Experts are just as baffled as inexperienced amateurs over this one. The saying 'it's all in the mind' was probably never more true than in this golfing case. Several years ago, an American company developed a golf putting machine. They carried out tests in optimum putting conditions and were gob-smacked to discover that their pride and joy couldn't hole every putt. They took that machine apart and tweaked every element of it until they were certain that it was in perfect working order. And, guess what? It still failed to hole some putts. If this doesn't go to prove that there is at least an element of 'black art' about golf putting, then nothing will. The best lesson to take from the above is that you really never are going to achieve putting perfection. If a machine in perfect working under operating under perfect putting conditions fails to hole every golf putt, then a human being with all his or her imperfections never is. So, the first rule is, stop giving yourself such a hard time whenever you miss a few putts. It happens to even top professional golfers. In fact, any problem you have with putting is much more likely to be psychological than physical, so the very last thing you should be doing is getting down on yourself mentally; this can only make matters worse. Is there anything you can do if you really do have severe, regular putting problems? Well, apart from working on the mental side of things to inculcate strong belief that you really can putt (try some self-hypnosis tapes etc.) the best advice is to see if a change of putter will do the trick. Take your lead from the professionals. So many professional golfers who've suffered terribly from the 'yips' on the putting green, such as Bernhard Langer, found their salvation in the broom handle putter - maybe you should give one a try.

Is this the worst golf tip ever

How many times, when you were struggling out there on the golf course, have you been offered a golf tip? It seems that there are a whole bunch of golfers who just cannot help themselves from passing on their own personal favorite golf tips when they see a fellow golfer struggling. For one friend of mine this got so bad that he actually refused to play with a particular golfer who always passed on golf tips whenever they played together. The problem with the golf tip is that it only affects one small part of your swing. And the golf swing is a very complex series of movements that have to be carried out precisely, in a correct sequence and at a given speed. If the golf tip you are given upsets that sequence or throws another part of your swing out of its normal place it can have a disasterous effect on your shot. The reason why I like Mind-Movies is that they string together, in the correct sequence, all the different positions and moves of a good swing. A good golf Mind-Movie is in effect a whole series of golf tips correctly strung togther. What I am saying here is that any single golf tip can damage your swing no matter how good that tip may be. Any golf tip you are given may be a perfectly correct part of a good golf swing but if that golf tip does not fit in with the rest of your swing it can spell disaster. Smart golfers learn to visualize all the different bodily positions in their golf swing. They then groove those pictures into their mind in the form of Mind-Movies. These Mind-Movies show them exactly what they have to do in order to swing the club in a way which consistently produces long and accurate shots. Then, when they’re ready to play, all they do is run their Mind-Movie and let the movie send precise what-to-do instructions to the different parts of their body. The trick with Mind-Movies is to build them correctly and then groove them into your mind so that you can see them whenever you need them. Then, if someone offers you a golf tip you can check it out against the pictures in your mind before deciding whether it will be likely to improve your swing. It took me a lot of time and a lot of trial-and-error to learn to do program my Mind-Movies correctly. But once I’d mastered the art it had a magical effect on my game. In my e-book The Golf Mind Movies Power Pack I describe in detail how to install a golf Mind-Movie which will quickly get you playing more consistent golf. If a golfer you know is suddenly hitting the ball further and straighter it is probably not because of some simple golf tip or because they have purchased the latest big, big, great big enromous driver or a new set of irons; it is far more likely that they have pieced together a whole set of golf tips into an effective golf Mind-Movie that works for them.

Is your golf swing too long

Is your backswing too long? The majority of inexperienced players I see have too long of a backswing. So why would so many people have such long swings? It all boils down to Human Nature. Human Nature says that the longer you swing the farther you will hit the ball. If this were true, why is it that I can hit a ball 300 yards with a 3/4 swing but I can’t hit it 400 yards with a long swing? When you watch the Pros on TV, you do see varying lengths of backswings. On one hand, you have a player like Jeff Sluman who has shorter swing and then you have a player like John Daly who has a longer swing. Even though they look different are there any similarities between their backswings. 1. Pros hinge their wrists to their maximum. This means that the angle between the left arm and the golf club at the top of the swing is 90 degrees or less. The average player tends to be locked up in their wrists because they try to hit the ball too hard. If you try to hit the ball too hard, your wrists will lock up and your left elbow will break causing the club to go back too far. You have to allow the wrists to stay loose throughout the swing. The looser wrists will give you more power without having to take the club back too far. 2. The shoulder rotation in a Pros’ swing determines the amount the left arm goes back. The shorter backswings and the longer ones are both relative to the amount of shoulder rotation each one creates. John Daly can turn his shoulders back more than 90 degrees. Because of this superhuman shoulder rotation, his swing appears longer than others. You should have a shoulder rotation of 90 degrees. Some people feel tight and they are not capable of turning their shoulders back this far. If you feel tight when you turn back, it’s not a bad thing. This tightness is a good thing because it tells you that you have created torque in your swing. Think of your body like a giant spring. If you were to wind up a giant spring it would get tight. Then, if you let go, it would want to snap back the other way. Most people avoid this tight feeling by over-rotating the hips on the way back. What they don’t realize it that when they rotate the hips more than 45 degrees they lose this torque that is necessary for creating consistency in the swing. So don't avoid this tight feeling. Only turn back as much as your body will allow. The next time you go to the range keep your lower body stable and turn your shoulders back as much as you can, until you feel tight. This tightness tells you that you have created the necessary torque in your backswing. Also, make sure your wrists are loose enough to allow the club to hinge to atleast 90 degrees in your wrists. This will give you maximum power without having to swing back too far. Until next time, Paul Wilson

It may not be your golf swing thats rubbish

You could be making a big mistake blaming your mishits and mishaps on your golf swing? No matter how much time and effort you have been spending, grooving your golf swing to perfection, you still will not achieve your goal if you are using unsuitable or defective golf clubs, will you? Now is the time for you to consider the following Golf Tip - this covers an examination of your golf clubs quality. If you plan on buying used golf clubs as beginner's tools, scrutinizing before purchasing is a must. The clubheads, the shafts, and the grips are golf club parts that should pass inspection first, before landing a decent spot in your golf equipment locker. Another excellent golf tip that will help you when buying a used set of golf clubs, try and ensure you have set consistency. If all the clubs have the same grip, shaft and heads then this will add consistency to your golf swing. It will also help a lot if you check the price of new clubs versus used clubs. A golf tip for a golfer that plans to regrip his clubs - Be cautious. This is because the grips are the only point of contact you have on the club during your swing. If the grips are too thin or too fat, this will make a big difference to your swing. Before carrying out the regripping, you need to know the core grip of the club and your hands grip size. To determine your core size grip, measure the diameter of the butt of the shaft you're going to re-grip. The shaft's diameter should match the grip's core diameter. In determining your hands grip, the available size grips are regular, mid-size, oversize and jumbo. Use only the best re-gripping materials that will provide optimum performance for your golf clubs. Another golf tip is that using ill-fitted clubs will be an obstacle to your golf playing success. A golfer must consider his or her body type in choosing the best-fitting equipment to support and carry out the golf swing effectively. Too heavy or too light clubs will result in changes to your swing angles when carrying out your golf swing. With the resulting poor results. This will be avoided if you select the best fitting equipment available. Custom golf club fitting makes a better option than just buying a new set of golf clubs. Getting custom fitting golf clubs is a golf tip that translates to a very worthy investment. The uniqueness of each person is attributed to the need of this way of buying new golf clubs. A custom fitting produces golf clubs that specifically suit the height, strength, swing characteristics and clubhead speed of the golfer. The type of club shaft also helps in predicting whether you'll do well in a game or you won't. There's a choice between a steel club shaft and a graphite-made club shaft. This golf tip aims to make you realize which type of golf club shaft will benefit your game. Observations show that the steel club shafts are more preferred by professional golfers while graphite shafts have become more popular with women, senior players and beginners. Steel shafts are less expensive than graphite shafts though. One more golf tip that could help you is that the golf clubs in your bag must suit your skill level. Since various skill levels need various golf clubs, it won't be wise to just use or bring a golf club that is just lying around. And, don't ever forget about the maximum golf club load your bag is allowed to hold during a round. You can only carry a maximum of 14 golf clubs in your bag. No more. Aside from your skill level contemplation, your mastery of a certain golf club and being comfortable with using it must also be put into consideration in deciding which golf club to hit. The correct combination of the right swing and a good choice of equipment will better arm you to become the best golfer you could ever be.

It s not about the bicep curl when it comes to golf fitness training

How many of you have read, "It's Not About The Bike" by Lance Armstrong? What we learned about Lance's life is that his mission is all about survival, digging deep from within, honoring your goals and commitments, and following your dreams in spite of the often difficult road to the top. Following an interview I did recently with Annika Sorenstam's trainer, he made me think about golf fitness training at the elite level and what it was really about. That is when it hit me, "it's not about the bicep curl". You see the bicep curl is one of many vehicles to display strength to a specific part of the front of your arm. It is a vehicle in the same way that the bike was the vehicle for Lance Armstrong to show his dedication, intensity, desire to win, and tremendous fortitude. So, if it is not about the bicep curl, then what is it about? It is about setting up to perform the exercise. It is about feeling the ground beneath you providing a solid base of support, as in golf. It's about making sure that your posture is correct so you don't place stress on your body unnecessarily. It's about engaging your abdominal muscles so that your low back is protected when your body begins to move. It's about knowing which part of your body has responsibility for stability while the other body parts are producing force. The bicep curl is also about understanding that strength not only comes from those body parts, but a much deeper resource like your brain sending positive thoughts and messages throughout the movement like "I know you can do two more and feel the strength from within" instead of "I've never liked this exercise, I feel weak when I lift". Are you with me? The bicep curl like every other exercise we do is about all of the elements that come together to develop true strength. These same elements are used when we set up for our golf swing knowing which part of our body is taking care of stability while the other parts are producing movement. You see, in the end, the golf swing is not about the swing anymore than the bicep curl is about growing that popular section of the arm. Golf is about learning what to feel with your body and mind and letting the swing happen as a result. Next time you go to the gym or perform those exercises at home, remember this. It's not about the equipment. Fully engage your mind, your body and your attention to all of the details that come along with it. This should make a big difference in your results!

It s your body that will improve your golf game

Your body and golf go hand-in-hand. You can work on your golf, but if you don’t address your body’s limitations, your game will not improve. I say this very strongly! The exact opposite will give you similar results. You can work on your body, but if you don’t work on your golf game you will not improve as much; although your body will naturally be able to make a better swing. In many of the articles I write both for the web and for my golf performance sites, I mention the body as the “the golfing machine”. You may have heard this term before, but I truly feel like it is profound. Your body dictates your golfing ability! You can get by on natural ability, but after a while, aging sets in and you lose strength, flexibility, coordination, stability and much more. When this happens, your game starts to slip. The only way to stop this slide is to work on your machine. I’m definitely not saying to stop practicing. But practice alone will not get it done! Focus on the limitations your body has and your golf game will transform. You will feel like you can make a bigger, more powerful swing; but with precision and accuracy. The net result is a big reduction in scores and mishit, and a huge improvement in distance and accuracy. You are a golfing athlete and all athletes condition their body’s specific to their sport. Why wouldn’t you do the same? The more you focus on the physical demands the swing puts on your body, the better you’ll be able to understand the importance of golf training. Are you competitive with yourself on the course? If you are, don’t you want to make a change that will quickly improve your game? If so, you’ve got to start thinking like a high-level golfing athlete. Don’t even tell any of your golfing buddies your thinking. Just take care of business and let your golf do the talking for you! You’ll soon realize it’s been your body keeping you from a much better golf game.

Jesper parnevik helps golfers get into the swing of spring

Spring marks the return of warmer weather and outdoor activities, and for golf enthusiasts, the beginning of peak golf season. But for the more than 35.9 million people who suffer from seasonal allergies, enjoying the outdoors can be challenging. That is why golfing expert and allergy sufferer Jesper Parnevik is offering tips that help golfers get into the swing of spring. Springtime Golf Tips From Jesper Parnevik • Avoid tee times between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m., when pollen levels are at their highest. Check out Benadrylusa or a weather information Web site in advance for pollen counts. • Pack essentials such as sunscreen and Band-Aids in your golf bag or cart. For allergy sufferers, pack an effective allergy medication like Benadryl, which can help to relieve even your worst allergy symptoms, such as runny nose, watery eyes and itchy throat. • Clubs aren't one size fits all, so when purchasing clubs, consider length, shaft flex, lie angle, loft and grip size. Remember, for virtually the same price as off-the-rack clubs, you can be fit for a custom set that will improve your game. • Choose the right course. Seasonal allergies are often caused by trees and grasses that have small, light and dry pollens, so picking the right type of course is important. For instance, a "links" course is relatively treeless, so it may have fewer allergy triggers. • Putting is one of the most essential parts of the game-so try to spend about 40 to 50 percent of your practice time on the short game. • If you're planning a golf vacation, try avoiding vacation destinations with hot, dry and windy weather, which generally means more pollen in the air. • Don't forget the cardinal rule in golf-proper etiquette. Try not to move, talk, make unnecessary noise (such as sneezing) or stand close to or directly behind someone who's addressing the ball or making a stroke.

John crooks and michele redman are going into the ngca hall of fame

The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) will induct John Crooks, Women's golf coach at Campbell University and Leta Lindley and Michele Redman into the NGCA Hall of Fame at their upcoming Hall of Fame Induction Banquet to be held Tuesday, January 10, 2006, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Crooks becomes the 39th member of the Coaches Hall of Fame and Lindley and Redman become the 47th and 48th members of the Players Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, with master of ceremonies Kay Cockerill of The Golf Channel, will take place during the 2006 NGCA Member Convention at the Caesar’s Tahoe Hotel. Now in his 15th year in charge of the women's program at Campbell University, Crooks is one of the top collegiate golf coaches in the country. During his tenure, Crooks has led the women's team to eight conference titles and 11 NCAA Regional appearances. He guided the Lady Camels to three-consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference championships from 1996-98 and again in 2001, ‘02 and ‘04. Crooks has been named conference coach of the year 12 times for either the men's or women's program in the last 15 years. He was named Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Coach of the Year for the second-straight season in 2002 and again in ‘04. His women's teams have won 49 tournaments. Entering the 2005-06 season Crooks ranks second among all active Division I women's coaches in tournament victories with 49, trailing only Dan Brooks of Duke (89). His women have won a tournament in all 14 years in which he has served as head coach. Coach Crooks has directed 98 golfers to all-conference honors during his tenure and 100 individuals to all-academic honors. In 2004-05, Crooks' women earned an at-large berth to the NCAA East Regional and finished 11th, its best showing since 1997. The team won four tournaments, the program's most in five years. A native of Winston-Salem, N. C., and a Buies Creek resident Crooks played at the University of Houston under legendary coach Dave Williams. He is a former USGA Junior Amateur Champion who competes regularly in major state and national amateur championships. He won the 2001 North and South Senior Amateur Championship by five strokes after carding a 73-72-71—216 at Pinehurst Nos. 8, 5 and 2.

Junior golfers get an early start with strength training

Strength training for juniors is supported by organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Each of these organizations encourages children's participation in appropriately designed training programs as long as they are competently supervised. The majority of research today confirms that juniors can benefit from strength training programs through the improvement of motor fitness skills, self esteem, overall strength and physical and emotional well being. For those juniors who are anxious to get an early start with strength training as a perfect compliment to their golf game, let’s take a look at the importance of form, function and good nutrition. These principles serve as the foundation for junior fitness and a lifetime of health and wellness for your young athlete. Form. Each exercise we perform has a specific method of set up, instruction and properly executed form for each movement. There are muscles which stabilize while other muscles activate. Each plays a role in an exercise. When we compromise on technique or what is considered good form, injuries occur. When we place inappropriate loads on unsupported bodies, we no longer create an opportunity for growth, but rather continue to place unnecessary stress on our bodies. Take the time to learn proper form and lifting techniques. Once your junior learns the basics, make sure they are properly supervised as they learn about their bodies and their new found capabilities. Remember these principles will serve as the foundation for their future so take the time to help them understand the importance of safety and appropriate lifting techniques. Function. Once you set safety and proper form as your priority, it’s time to choose an appropriate exercise program. Many young players ask about the right number of sets and reps for their age. Just remember that young players are not aspiring weightlifters or bodybuilders, but rather strength builders. Junior golfers should begin with body weight exercises that place an emphasis on many muscle groups and movement patterns which mimic real life movements such as pushups, pull-ups, and multi directional lunges. Weights can be used, but the focus should be light weights and higher repetitions. Simply choose 5 or 6 exercises and perform 15 to 20 reps while continuing your concentration on good form and technique. Never compromise on the quality of your movement in favor of increased repetitions. Begin with only a few repetitions until you master an exercise. Parents or instructors should provide clear instruction and close supervision. Good Nutrition. As role models, parents have the responsibility to educate their children on the importance of proper nutrition. I’m sure, as adults, we’ve often wondered how different we would have viewed food if our parents had spent more time with us. Regardless of their age, it is not too late to teach them about fueling an athletic body and powerful mind. In the end, food fulfills three basic requirements. These are to provide fuel for our bodies, regulation of our metabolism and to support new tissue growth. Children who golf need an abundance of nutrients in the form of variety, balance and moderation. In the absence of proper nutrients, you sacrifice their growth as well as their future golf performance.

Keep the yellow golf shirt in the bag

Another beautiful day, out on the golf course, and I’m feeling like a million bucks wearing my bright yellow golf shirt, and the girl I want to meet, is just a golf hole ahead of me. There she goes, off the tee box. Right down the middle of the fairway on number 2 hole. The last time I was out here, she faded it right into the bunker, just next to my favorite ball placement. I missed my golden opportunity to meet her at that time. I pull hooked the ball on the opposite side of the fairway. Maybe we’ll meet a couple holes down. She has to come back down number 3, and I should be teeing off number 2-tee box at the same time. Maybe I’ll impress her with a beautiful drive, straight and long down the fairway. Worst-case scenario will be another long hook out into her fairway this time. I wonder if she’ll stop and watch me fly the trees, hitting back to the green? Here we go. I see that her drive on number 3 landed left side of the fairway. I better tee this puppy up and let it fly. If I’m going to impress her, now is the time. With this bright yellow golf shirt on, there is no way that she will not notice me. I’m sure I’ll stand out. This is my golden opportunity. Great golf shot happening here! It is flying way out of sight! I see her looking over as the ball lands and rolls. Wow! I think I did it! All I have to do is proudly walk down the middle of the fairway. I feel like a pro with this yellow golf shirt on, taking the turn at the Masters. Now all I have to do is keep a straight face, as if it’s routine, and walk down the left side of the middle. That would bring me a little closer, without having to yell, to say hi. I better figure out quickly what to say, just in case she compliments me on a nice golf shot. Oh great! I hit it so far. The foursome ahead of me is yelling and waving. I completely forgot to wait until they were out of reach. How embarrassing is this going to be? I am the only golfer in my group out on the fairway. All my golf buddies are on the other side of the fairway. How do you try to impress someone with a great golf shot, only to find out, the shot almost hit someone? This is not good. What’s even worse? I think her parents are walking my way. Great! Let’s meet the parents! Perfect timing! My buddies need a hand on the other side of the fairway to look for a lost ball! It’s a good thing I carry an extra shirt, just in case it rains. I think I should change this bright yellow golf shirt on the opposite side of the fairway. First impression is going to have to wait.

Keep your golf swing in shape all year with a golf fitness program

Some PGA Tour players have been playing for a couple of weeks in Hawaii and California. Others like Vijay and Ernie have been playing on the European Tour. Regardless of how many tournaments the pros have played this year, they have been working on their games for more time than most of us realize. Make no mistake about it: in golf – or baseball, football, basketball or any other pro sport – there is no longer an off-season. So while this may be the first official shot of the season for some, the training process to get ready to make that shot has been quietly going on for months. The amateur can learn a great deal from the professional golfer. Many parts of the world it is not possible to play golf year around, but there are ways to keep your golf game in shape all year long. Professionals know how to do it and so can you. Realistically, there is very little time to take a break and do absolutely nothing for professional golfers. While every pro is different, there is a generic blueprint most will follow. After the pro finishes his last golf tournament, they take a little break. A few weeks off to give the body and mind a little rest. Every pro athlete needs that time to just recharge and give the body – both physically as well as mentally – time to recover. The PGA Tour season is one of the longest in sports and even though they may not play every week, it’s very taxing on the body and the time off is essential to ensure positive results when we begin training for the next season. I would recommend the same recipe for the amateur. Regardless if you are able to play year around or not, take a period of at least 2 weeks to put the golf clubs in the closet. The break away from the game will do wonders. You may even find after you return you are playing better golf and shooting lower scores. Following the rest time – and like I said, it’s longer for some, shorter for others – its time for the tour player to begin ramping up for the next season by physically improving the parameters of the body for the upcoming year. Just like any other golfer – from the Sunday hacker to the scratch golfer to the club pro – the professional golfer will work on trying to increase flexibility, balance, strength, endurance and power. The amateur during this time of the year (usually the winter when snow is on the ground) can implement a golf fitness program. A golf fitness program will entail developing the physical capacities of the body around the golf swing. The program will look to develop flexibility, balance, strength, endurance, and power in relation to the golf swing. This is the first step for the amateur to keeping their golf swing in shape all year long. The amateur during this time of year can also implement swing drills into their training program. The professional may or may not incorporate swing drills into their program at this time year. But for the amateur I recommend it, why? This is the time of year in addition to developing the body for the golf swing. The amateur can work on swing faults that hindered their scores the previous season. The swing drills can be simply performing “mirror drills” to work on posture and the phases of the golf swing. You should start putting drills this time of the year. If you are lucky enough to live in a region you can play golf year around, a couple short sessions at the range every week is a good idea. I would recommend the range sessions be kept short and focused on fixing the “problem” areas in your golf swing. The important point is the off-season is a time the amateur can take advantage of working on both their bodies and their golf swing Professionally when the PGA Tour season approaches, we begin what is essentially the preseason. This is when the player starts to practice the fundamental mechanics of the sport. If it’s a golfer, he’s on the range working on his swing, if it’s a pitcher, he’s throwing getting ready for spring training. Physically, we’re still training the body, but we tone it down while the player fine tunes his game. But make no mistake about it, even though working on the golf game is 75 percent of the focus of this pre-season training program, we’re still working on the basics of flexibility, balance, strength, endurance and power training. The pre-season for the amateur marks the time of year when the snow is beginning to melt and the “itch” to play golf comes around. I would suggest the amateur follow a similar program as the professional during this time of year. Start spending more time at the range. Working on all aspects of your golf game. Continue with your golf fitness program, but you may want to back off it a little as a result of the increased practice time. Again, keep in mind the body swings the golf club and we must keep the body in shape to do so. The pre-season program of increased golf practice and a little less golf fitness continues with the professional golfer until their first tournament. This marks the point when we shift to an in-season golf fitness program. The golf fitness exercises don’t stop, but we back off on the intensity. The program doesn’t change much. We’re still focused on flexibility, balance, strength, endurance and power, but the amount or volume of work is much less to accommodate the physical and mental strain of competition. Four days of tournament play can take a toll on the body. As a result, we must back off on the amount of golf fitness training. The amateur during the golf season is probably in a little different of a situation. They are probably not playing 4 competitive rounds of golf per week plus practice. At most, they may be playing 2-3 rounds per week with a couple practice sessions. As a result of the lower volumes of golf they can spend a little more amount of time with their golf fitness program. Essentially, the amateur can pretty much stick to pre-season volume of golf fitness training unless they are playing quite a bit. Just make sure the right balance of golf fitness training is in place in relation to your golf practice and playing. This is necessary so that you do not physically over-tax the body. Bottom line if you are looking to keep your golf game in shape and improving year around, I recommend following what the pros do; take a break at the end of the season, implement a golf fitness program, work on your swing faults during the winter, increase your practice time at the range before the season, and during the season keep a good balance of playing, practicing, and working out.
