More muscles are used in the golf swing than you think

While most golfers are aware of the fact that the muscles in the lower part of the body are used in the golf swing, many are not aware of just how important these muscles are to the consistent execution of the perfect golf swing. Many do not even realize how imperative it is that muscles used in the golf swing are exercised and kept in tip top condition. Actually, if this is not done, it becomes extremely difficult to for anybody to enjoy the game as too many factors stand in the way of a golfer who does not exercise. For example a common complaint amongst many golfers on the course is that of pain in the lower back which is usually aggravated by golf. This pain is especially evident after longer sessions on the course. How can any golfer improve golf swing, let alone have any hope of enjoying the game with such a nagging, persistent pain? Yet this problem is easily solved by simply strengthening lower back muscles used by doing certain exercises. The result is that there is a higher level of endurance which will also have a tremendous impact on the golf swing of any golfer. There is actually a very simple exercise to achieve this which can be done from the comfort of your home and without having to go into a gym or special exercise area. Muscles used in the golf swing include some in the lower leg as well as those higher up like the hamstring which is crucial in accomplishing the perfect golf swing. It is a proven fact that muscles used in the golf swing that are not exercised and conditioned on a regular basis with the correct exercise, will usually not respond to the correct golfing techniques. Without being conditioned to obtain the necessary stamina and staying power it is unlikely that muscles used in the golf swing will be able to deliver the required performance.

More tips on how to lower your golf score

Golfing is typically played in different forms depending on the agreed terms between the competing parties. These may come in two forms with corresponding rules to be played on and these are the match play and the stroke play. In any given type of golf games, winning is determined by the fewer number of strikes before the ball gets into their respective holes. How you would be able to lower your golf score depends on how you strategize and effectively hit the ball to get it to the nearest holes you are trying to reach. But this objective makes it even hard for us due to a variety of reasons. There are a couple of tips by which novice golfers could take advantage of in order to get away with the restrictions imposed by your physical infirmity and eventually lower your score in any given hole target. 1. Understanding the Physics of Golfing – Players may not be aware that golf gaming operates on several principles of physics. A beginning golfer should understand that in order to achieve the least possible strikes before they get the ball into the winning holes, they must know how a golf ball with weight flies and cuts the air into trajectory motion before reaching the ground. Being able to estimate the relative weight of the ball and the clubs being used will surely put you on a winning edge. 2. Physical Training – You must understand that golf is a type of physical activity and in order to perform a certain kinetic workout well, one must be able to handle and put together all the elements of bodily strength, endurance, and full coordination and balance and perform at your utmost potential. In short, one must be physically fit. 3. Take on That Ideal Swing – As an individual golfer, you must create your own unique swinging technique. You should learn to understand how you could best perform your drive and take on fewer strikes before reaching the hole. 4. Take on a Daily Routine – There is truth to the old clichй that practice makes perfect. However, it should be put in mind that proper practice in the right environment with the right experienced people around makes most of the difference. 5. Proper Mindset – Emotions play an important role in setting your goals to their completion. Body chemistry works in any physical activity such as golf games. If you are upset and worrying about anything else, leave it at that and start focusing on a playing mode.

My core strength is just fine thank you but my golf swing needs help

Some of us may have an idea about what core training entails. Swing coaches and trainers talk about it in relation to the swing, but what actually is the core? When the question is asked, “What is the core?” The most common answer is, “Your abdominals.” The core can be defined as the region of the body that incorporates the hips, abdominals, obliques, and lower back. The definition of the core indicates that it is an anatomical region of the body. The top of your chest to your hips is the easiest way to think about the core region. This part of the body includes numerous muscles in each of these defined regions. Think about all those little back muscles that your doctor speaks about when you are injured. Those muscles are part of the core. When you see those infomercials for the “latest and greatest” abdominal machine, those machines are supposedly going to give you that “six pack.” The muscles of the “six pack” are part of your core. These two regions of the body are the easy parts of the core to understand, but what about the other parts? The general definition of the core indicates that it encompasses ALL the muscles between your chest and lower body. Keeping this definition in mind, what other muscles would be incorporated in the core region? Probably the easiest way to do this is to create a mental image of the body and then look at what muscles are in this region of the body. The hips are part of the core, and all the muscles in this region of the body are part of the core. The muscles within the hips contain the hip flexors, hip extensors, adductor complex, abductor complex, gluteus maximus, gluteus minimus, gluteus medius, origin of the hamstrings, and origin of the quads. Quite a few muscles, wouldn’t you say? Currently, we have the muscles of the hips, low back, and the “six pack,” but there are more. We can essentially factor two more muscle groups into the core region. Probably the most under recognized muscles in the core region are termed the “deep stabilizing muscles” of the spine. The easiest way to think of these muscles is the following: Think about “peeling away the top layer of your abdominals (the “six pack”) and the top layer of your lower back muscles. Underneath these muscles would be another group of muscles that function to stabilize the spine. The number of muscles in this region of the body is numerous. The names of a few are: transverse abdominus, erector spinae, and spinaleus. Again, these are just a few of the muscles in this region. If we were to name all of them, it could easily fill this whole page. We have one final group of muscles that comprise the core region, and they are on the sides of the body (the place where we quite often develop those “love handles”). You now know where these muscles are, and we anatomically describe these muscles as your obliques. The two major muscles in this region are the external and internal obliques. In addition, you will find other muscles within this region such as the serratus. At this point you should have a good understanding of the core region, the muscles groups of the core, and the specific muscles contained within this region. Now we move on to the functioning of the core in regards to golf. First question, why are these muscles so important to golf? Before we answer that question, let’s look at this region of the body in a little more detail. A vast number of muscles comprise this region of the body as we know at this point in time. Some of you probably have some first hand experience with the muscles of the core. If you have ever had a lower back injury, you know what I am talking about. What we need to understand at this point, before entertaining the question of the core’s involvement in the golf swing, is the following: Realize that all of the core muscles function as a unit, meaning they work together to essentially stabilize and move the body. The movements that this region of the body is involved in are vast. Any movement other than probably lying on your back utilizes the core the cores in some way, shape, or form. Let me explain this thought. We know that the core region is involved in stabilizing the spine, right? Well with that thought in mind, your spine needs to be stabilized in any upright posture you place your body. For example, as I am writing this article, I am sitting at my computer. For my body to maintain this “seated, upright position” my spine must be stabilized. The muscles of the core region perform this activity. When we begin to talk about the body moving is where we can really see the core becoming active. Just think of some simple activities like walking, bending over to pick up a newspaper, etc. All of these activities are utilizing the core to stabilize the spine, bend, turn, rotate the body, and transfer energy from your feet to the upper body. (Don’t worry too much about this thought; it is for another article.) The core is integrated as a unit and involved in almost every movement that you perform in your daily lives. I hope by this time you can see the importance of the core when it comes to human movement. Now let us move on to a topic of more interest to all of us, and that is the golf swing. Looking at the golf swing, the core region of the body is considered “the engine of the body.” It is responsible for the balance, stability, and rotation required to swing a golf club. From address to follow through, this section of the body plays a large part in the execution of the swing. If you have an understanding of what muscles comprise the core region and their importance when it comes to human movement, then you will undoubtedly see the importance of the core as it pertains to the golf swing. This little discussion has probably provided you with the understanding that there is more than “meets the eye” when discussing the core region.

    My first time playing golf

Many summers ago, I recall lying in front of the TV, wearing in my shorts, sipping a refreshing drink, enjoying the warm breeze, watching the Masters. I found myself being strangely fascinated by the game. Until that point I had considered it a game for the rich, well-to-do and young, loud, brash sales reps. I decided to get of my lazy backside and have a go – is it as addictive as they say? Surely it can’t be that hard to knock a small white ball around a field of trees and sandpits! So, without the first clue in what to do I went to the local golf course. I watched a while and decided that I ought to use the practice area (driving range) before ‘wowing’ everyone with my natural skill on the course. I asked the man in the shop to have a go on the driving range – “How many balls?” he asked “Just the one” I replied “100 or 200?” came the reply “Oh I see, just 100” I said feeling I’d soon get the grip of it. It was only as I left the shop I realized I’d forgotten something – so I returned. “Have you got any sticks?” I enquired. “You mean CLUBS” “Whatever” “1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, or 9?” I was starting to wonder what the obsession was with having a lot of everything. “Just 1”. So I walked out with my token, long club and went to the range. I put the token in the machine and listened to it make all sorts of strange noises. Bang, gurgle, clunk and then 100 balls started shooting out. It was only at that moment my hawk like vision spotted the baskets in the corner. 100 balls continued to shoot out of the machine, over my feet and across the floor. Half an hour later I had picked them up and went to a bay. I positioned myself between two older gentlemen. Figuring they couldn’t be that good (Oh how I was wrong!!). I put my ball on the tee and prepared to whack the ball as hard as I could. Having been into bodybuilding for some years I figured I could outdo anyone else. However, due to the heat, the energy I’d expended collecting balls and the adrenaline – my hands were a bit sweaty. I swung. I looked up and watched my no 1 club flying 75 yards up the driving range, looking like a giant silver boomerang. It was only after I had to stop twenty people from swinging while I walked in front of them to get it that I realized that golf is harder than it looks. A good golf swing is a combination of many things - - Equipment - Timing - Delivery - Precision - Relaxation - Grip - Timing - Stance and the list goes on. – When they come together it’s pure joy – when just one thing is out – it is frustrating. The rule is the same for anything - the right combination, in the right time leads to joy. Get it out of sync and it's painful.

My golfing life as a hooker

Here's my warning to all wannabe golfer's, if you start on this sorry path, and do nothing to stop it, you will lead a life of pain and anguish. All my golfing life I've been a hooker! How or why it started I don't know. I never wanted it to happen, it just did. When I first started hooking, it was not every shot. It just sort of creeps up on you, over days, weeks, even months, and gets gradually worse, until nearly every shot is hanging left. And I don't mean just a little bit left, these 90 degree plus benders would make a circle look tame. Finally, it got so bad, I was spending so much time in the trees, searching for lost balls, that my friends stopped coming round, and asking me out to play. Then came that dreaded day. I can remember this so clearly, its almost as if it happened yesterday. I ran out of golf balls during a round. It was SOooo embarrassing. Thats what made me finally seek professional help. After walking off the course that afternoon, I went straight to the clubhouse and spoke to The Pro. When I spoke to The Pro, he admitted that he had already heard about my little problem. It seems that a few of my so-called friends had already spoken to him, to find out if it was contagious. What he told me, certainly made me feel better. There is a cure. And its really quite easy. Just keep reading: THE PROBLEM: Hitting the ball with a closed clubface, causing shots to curve (sometimes dramatically) to the left. THE CURE: The first thing you should do is check your grip. When you grip the club the Vs in each hand should point over your right shoulder. If they point farther to the right, then your grip is too “strong” and could produce a closed face and a hook at impact – when the hands return to their normal position. If your grip is good and you are still hooking, try weakening your grip by gradually moving both hands to the left. Check your stance to make sure that your feet, knees, hips and shoulders are all parallel to your target line. Another cause could be the ball position. If it is too far back, it could produce an excessive in-to-out swingpath. Try gripping the club more in the palm of your hands, rather than the fingers, to reduce wrist action and premature closing of the clubface. Make sure that your left wrist is not too relaxed at impact. If it is, your right wrist will take control and close the clubface too early. On your downswing, make sure that the action begins with your legs and body. This will stop your wrists unhinging and closing the clubface too soon. There, you see. I told you it was curable. Although, maybe not TOTALLY curable. To this day, many years later, occasionally it happens. But the major difference is that, now as I'm walking towards the trees to look for that wayward shot, I'M SMILING - because I know how to fix the problem. The Happy (occasional) Hooker

Need some time out get a golf vacation

Sometime along your golf games, it might have entered your mind to bark on a golf vacation but have never got started with it. To help you realize your golf vacation plans, here are some guidelines you can use: To start with, see if you can fit in your golf vacation with your schedule. By setting the right schedule, everything will follow Once you are totally decided to pack your things up, the next thing you should consider is your budget. From here on, you can have the liberty of selecting the right vacation that is right for you. Researching for the golf package that will suit you is essential. It is best to seek the assistance of a travel service agent, they can provide you with lots of information since they are more knowledgeable in the field and are able to make arrangements for you, this in the end can save you more time and trouble and money. Meanwhile, it is advisable that in planning a golf vacation, try prioritizing your selection of golf courses before accommodation. However, in booking tee times, they can be reserved in advance. Magazines like Golf Digest and Golf & Travel may provide you with travel data on some great golf vacation destinations you can consider. Some may even provide detailed descriptions of golf courses. Checking on these will give you the right idea of what are in store for your golf vacation. Renting for a set of golf clubs is like playing with different musical instruments. Most golfers prefer carrying along with them their personal equipments. For golfers like to use their own golf clubs, this would lead them to carrying an extra load. But to avoid the special considerations while traveling, some chooses not to. It is your option however if you want bring with you your own or you will rent clubs from the golf courses. Either way, the main point is not the amount of load you would carry but the enjoyment you can have during your golf vacation. In addition to the given guidelines, it is good to take note that in keeping your golf accessories with you without having to do with several bags or purses, an efficient golf bag is all you need. One that has enough space for almost everything that you would need in the course. One that won’t make you struggle with unloading your things when it is time to use them. Are you the kind of golfer who, once they got into the course instantly jumps to take your hits? Are do you warm up first? Expert golfers say that it is more advisable to do the latter. Also, if you are booked for only few days, try to maximize the use of the golf courses if the golf course management allows such. Meaning, play at one rounds at two or try two rounds at one. This way, you’ll be able to enjoy and make most out of your money. Keep in mind though to treat your golf vacation as a special vacation or as an out of town trip, in this way, you can have great fun while playing golf and at the same time, improving your swings and putt while burning fats. Who knows, you might make it to the PGA.

Never keep your head still in the backswing

I still remember years ago when I first started to play golf, the tip you heard the most was "keep your head still". My father used to say it to me at least 50 times a round. He thought he was doing me a favor, when really, he should have been telling me to do the exact opposite. He should have been saying "move your head a little on the way back". Why move your head as you take the club back? You want to move your head because in order to swing in a circular motion you need an axis to swing around. An axis has a top and a bottom. When you set up to the golf ball, you have 1 top to an axis (your head) and 2 bottoms (your legs and feet) to an axis. This means that on the way back your head should be moving 3 - 5 inches to the right in order to create your first axis to swing around. Your head will stay there as you come down and fall even further back through impact. Then, after the ball has been hit, your head will move forward over top of the left leg to create a second axis. This second axis will allow you to complete the circular rotation in your golf swing allowing you to finish your swing. So what you have is a floating top to an axis. Your head floats back and forth to create 2 axis when you swing. This allows you to swing in a circular motion. It's not a perfect circle though. It's a slight oval. Because your swing is a slight oval, you will never hit the ball 100% perfect. The only time you would keep your head still is if you had one leg. If you had one leg, you would have 1 top and 1 bottom to an axis. This means that if you moved your head you would destroy this axis. So maybe we should all be playing standing on one leg and keeping our head still? Unfortunately, this will never work because you will not generate enough power and you will probably fall over. Most people have enough trouble keeping their balance with 2 legs never mind 1 so it's best that you keep both legs on the ground and learn to move your head. Most people I teach try to move their head back when I tell them to but they have a hard time actually doing it because it feels so uncomfortable for them to move their head. To get the proper feeling, you must feel like your head is moving about 1 foot to the right. If you feel like your head is moving 1 foot to the right on the way back, it will actually only move a few inches. Try swinging regularly towards a mirror. As you watch yourself swing, you can clearly see if your head is moving back 3-5 inches. As your head moves back, feel how your weight loads into the right leg. This is the tell tale sign that you have created your first axis in the backswing. If you don't have a loaded, powerful feeling in your right leg, you will have to move your head a little more as you go back. If you are wearing a hat when you play golf just take your backswing and look to see if the brim of the hat is level to the ground not tilted to the left. If the brim of the hat is level to the ground at the top of your backswing your head will have moved the proper amount. As a final check just ask a friend to watch your head to see if it moves back a few inches or use a video camera to see for yourself. If your head is too still then constantly remind yourself to move it back or have someone constantly remind you to "move your head". As you move your head back, beware that it may cause you to hit behind the ball a little. This is a good sign at first. It's telling you that you are moving your head back but you have too much weight on your right foot at impact. To remedy hitting behind the ball (fat shots), all you have to do is feel a little more weight shift off of your right foot through impact. If you do, you will hit the ball perfectly and with much more power than you are used to. Until next time, Paul Wilson

New golf tip how mind movies will improve your golf quickly

If you want to improve your golf game nothing will get you on the right track more quickly than well formulated Mind-Movies. The good news is that you can at last get a really first class guideline on how to develop effective Mind-Movies. A great deal is written about visualization in sport. A lot of it seems to center around the idea that what the sports person should do is visualize the result they wish to attain. I do NOT agree with this. I agree that it is a good idea to have objectives and targets and to visualize those objectives, but that it NOT the most powerful way to use visualization in sport, or indeed in any other area of your life. In any aspect of our lives objectives only serve as a destination for your efforts. So it helps to visualize your golf ball nestling near the hole. But what gets you to that destination is the effort that you make and the quality of that effort. It is the quality of your golf swing that gets your ball next to the hole. The real power of visualization is in its ability to guide your effort. Good visualization provides a guide line or template for the body movements necessary to a good golf swing. Once you know what you’re doing you can create and produce a Mind-Movie of your golf swing in a matter of minutes. And you can make that swing as powerful, accurate and elegant as you want. The other great beauty of visualization is that it gives you the ability to constantly hone and improve the Mind-Movie which is guiding your body and thus your swing. So you can get better and better as you rehearse your swing more and more in your mind. And, because no-one else knows that you're working on your golf swing, you can practice in your mind anywhere you like and as often as you like. The new Golf Mind-Movies Power Pack recommends that you practice visualizing your golf swing as often as you can. The trick is to learn how to write, direct and produce a good Mind-Movie which will guide your swing so that it becomes a powerful, reliable method of propelling your golf ball accurately to any target you choose. Whether you are new to golf or an old hand The Golf Mind-Movies Power Pack will almost certainly improve your game in next to no time. The fact that the beta trial version of The Golf Mind-Movies Power Pack sold out in just 19 hours bears strong testimony to the revolutionary effect that Mind-Movies are having on the games of many golfers. Nick faldo

Nicholas Alexander also known as Nick Faldo was born on July 18, 1957 is considered to be undoubtedly the best and the most successful European golfer ever with over 42 titles to his credit. Nick always demonstrated a natural aptitude for sport, but watching Jack Nicklaus competing in the 1971 US Masters was a defining moment and inspired him to take up golf. With a set of clubs borrowed from the next door neighbors, Nick started learning golf at his local club. Within four years he was the best amateur player in Europe, winning the English Amateur Championship and the British Youth Championships in 1975. The following year Nick took up golf professionally finishing 8th on the European Tour Order of Merit in 1977 and 3rd in 1978 and winning a European Tour event in each of those seasons. In the former year he became the youngest player to appear in the Ryder Cup at the age of twenty one. Faldo was one of the leading players on the European Tour in the early 1980s, and he topped the Order of Merit in 1983. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Faldo was one of the very best players in the world. He won the Open Championship again in 1990 and claimed it a third time in 1992. He also won the Masters Tournament, which is also one of golf's four major championships in 1989 and 1990. He spent time at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings and claimed the European Tour Order of Merit a second time in 1992. That year he had worldwide earnings of Ј1,558,978, a world record. Faldo was named the PGA TOUR Player of the Year in 1990, and the European Tour Player of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1992. He has won 29 European Tour titles. As Faldo entered his forties his form gradually fell away and he devoted more time to off course activities. The last season that he played fairly regularly on the PGA Tour was 2001. He refocused on the European Tour, but played less than a full schedule. His last top 10 finish in a major to date, and probably his last of all, was tie for eighth place at the 2003 Open Championship. As of July 2005 his European Tour career earnings are just under €8 million and his PGA Tour earnings are over $5 million. Written by David DuVal

North portugal s golf is a hit with brits

“Links that make you think, spectacular mountain courses and hospitality fit for a gentlemanґs Club” - Ian Pemble finds value for money in Oporto, North Portugal”. Although I went to North Portugal to play some golf, two of the best things about the trip had nothing to do with the Royal and Ancient game. The first is that Ryanair fly there from Stansted. Not the most convenient airport for the West Country admittedly, but cheap as chips. At Porto the airline has made part of the terminal its very own, complete with cafe/bar, Duty free shop and so on. The other reason is that my trip was arranged by an English businessman based in Porto called Peter Evens (pronounced Evans). His company is called PortGolf - but he can organise a complete itinerary, including sight-seeing, water sports, an equestrian centre, go-karting, trips to a famous port lodge (including tastings), dinner at a casino with cabaret, and much more. He also caters for the whole family and those who don№t want to needn’t go anywhere near a golf course. But I did; and not only were the courses great fun ¬they were practically deserted. Apart from weekends, expect millionaire№s golf with the course to yourself. I played at three clubs and, for those of you impressed by looks, let№s get the beauty contest over with first. Estela, the links course, is not the most attractive. Sadly the beach is masked by an ugly, wire-topped fence - few sea views here - and inland there is low-level agricultural land. Although there were plenty of pumpkins and water melons, it mostly reminded me of UK allotments. The other two, both carved out of mountain greenery, are much prettier. Amarante is probably the best designed, certainly in terms of using the space available, and offers a testing layout with lots of scenery to admire between holes. There are scary blind shots off the first and third tees, a couple of lakes surrounded by greens (but it feels like the other way round) and a few other memorable challenges. The 18th is an up-hill monster par 5, and the fourth is a dogleg-right par 4 with a second shot to a tricky green. This is nicknamed the volcano: it’s round with a flat top and any ball that doesn’t stop on the short stuff disappears off the front, back or sides. The most spectacular course has to be Ponte de Lima. The back nine is fairly traditional parkland with lakes and several ditches to contend with. But the front nine is a wonder to behold. The holes seemed to be individually carved out of the pine forest so that, although a glance at the map shows parallel fairways, they are so far apart any push or pull with leave you deep in the trees. The signature hole is the par-4 ninth. The tee is at the highest part of the course and you have to aim for a landing area about 200 feet below you. From there it’s another downhill shot to a green guarded by water and, if your drive was too far left, it№s a blind shot over some trees. Which was the best course? Estela, funnily enough. But then I am a sucker for links golf. On man-made courses such as Amarante and Ponte de Lima the architect has decreed that, on a par 4, you will aim your drive thus and so. If, like me, you are not a long hitter, you won№t reach any fairway bunkers and your second shot will leave you short of the green, say about 70 yards. You then have no choice but to fly the ball over bunkers, or lakes, or both. On a links course that 70-yard third shot might well be towards a green guarded by nothing more threatening than the grassed-over swales and hollows of the original dunes. So you can make a perfectly good case for using any iron in your bag, from putter to sand wedge. Do you roll it all the way, punch in a low one, or fly it to the edge of the green? You could even smack the ball straight up into the air and hope it drops, hops and stops by the hole. With so many choices, I usually end up making the wrong one - or playing the right one badly. Links golf makes you think and that, for me, is the real challenge of the game. All in all it was a memorable experience and I honestly believe that, if I hadn№t played any golf at all, there were enough other attractions to made the trip worthwhile - and even better for the non-golfers in the family! Accommodation: I stayed at the British Club, or the Oporto Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club to give it its full name. And it really is a little bit of Britain, founded in 1855 and tucked away behind big gates and a long drive, yet right in the middle of the city. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed and the decor throughout is very Gentleman’s Club with wood panelling everywhere. The food is restaurant quality, with generous bar snacks (naturally there’s a full English breakfast on offer), and the bar serves drinks at very reasonable prices. The night I was there the expats gathered to watch the England vs. Austria football match on a big screen in the bar and I felt most at home. However, Peter can arrange for accommodation from cheap-and-cheerful to five-star luxury. Everywhere you visit, he will have been there first to sample it himself and he prides himself on getting the best possible service for his customers. For example, I had to skip my trip to the port lodge, so I gave him 30 euros and asked him to get me a good deal on some bottles of port. I was expecting him to come back with 30 euros worth of port. Instead I got exactly what I asked for: two bargain bottles and 15 euros change. I№ve never before met anyone who is more careful with my money than I am. The courses: Ponte de Lima; 6,006 metres, par 71, mountainous forest, spectacular views, hotel at the course: Amarante: 5,085 metres, par 68, mountainous parkland, spectacular views: Estela: 6,017 metres, par 72, classic links, no views to speak of (so concentrate on your golf): Please note: These are merely the three courses I had time to visit. Portgolf can also offer trips to three more 18-hole courses, including one across the border in Spain, and several smaller courses with one in the centre of Porto itself. Getting there: Ryanair seem to have the cheap-flights-to-Porto market sewn up. Be aware that hand luggage is strictly limited (coming back I put my laundry in the golf bag to leave room for a few bottles of port). My return flight was Ј43, with an extra Ј34 for the golf clubs. At least Stansted is easy enough to get to via the M4/M25/M11 or by train via London Paddington/tube/London Liverpool Street. As for your trip, talk to Peter Evens at Portgolf. He will plan a trip (including giving you advanced warning of any cheap flights available) to match your own specifications and budget, meet you at the airport, ferry you around, and wave goodbye from the airport. Thoroughly recommended.

Not all shafts are created equal

Did you know that by switching to the correct shaft you could add another 15 to 20 yards to your swing? Not only can choosing the right shaft increase your distance, it can also help your accuracy. The shaft, often referred to as "the engine" of a golf club, is undoubtedly as important as choosing the right club head. Unfortunately, most golfers don’t give choosing the correct shaft the attention it deserves. It's not uncommon for a golfer to spend $300 -$400 on a new golf club, without giving the shaft a second thought. Few golfers even realize they can change their shaft or choose one to fit their game. Without the right shaft, having the best clubheads will still not give you the ball flight, distance, accuracy and feel you’re looking for. Since there are no industry standards for flex or torque, when it comes to golf club shafts, it can be very difficult to compare specs from different manufacturers. Here’s a brief overview of what to look for when choosing a golf club shaft. Steel Shafts vs. Graphite shafts: The general thought is that beginners and intermediate golfers should use graphite shafts and advanced golfers should use steel shafts. That’s not really true anymore. As with any type of golf equipment the best option is to try both and see which one works best for your swing. Even professional golfers have made the transition from steel to graphite shafts. Tiger Woods, for example, switched to using a graphite shaft in his driver in 2004. So, what are the differences between steel shafts and graphite shafts? Graphite is a lighter material than steel, reducing the overall weight of your golf club. They allow for longer clubs and they have more construction options than steel shafts. Graphite shafts also reduce the shock at impact. Steel shafts, in general, are less expensive than graphite and are considered to be more durable. But, the quality of graphite shafts has improved considerably over the last 10 years, making them almost as durable as a steel shaft. The key difference between graphite and steel is the weight. Since graphite shafts are lighter than steel, it will increase your swing speed, giving you more distance. The downside is that graphite shaft generally give you a feeling of having less control over the clubhead. Graphite shafts simply do not give you the same "feedback" as steel shafts do. Graphite shafts are usually recommended for women, seniors and players with a low swing speed looking to add distance to their swing. Flex: Basically, the amount of flex refers to the ability of a golf club shaft to bend during the swing. The wrong amount of flex for your swing will cause the clubface to be misaligned at impact. This affects the distance, accuracy and trajectory of the ball. The best way to determine the correct flex is with the use of a launch monitor. This will help a fitter to have a better understanding of the launch conditions during the moment of impact. This will, in turn, help them determine the best flex for your game. Even without the use of a launch monitor, you can still determine your correct flex. If you know how far you hit your driver, you can use that number as a gauge for flex selection. For example, you should probably use an extra stiff shaft if you hit the ball more than 260 yards. For 240 to 260 yards, use a stiff flex. Etc. As a general rule, especially for beginners, you should use the softest flex you can control without any difficulty. If you’re not sure, use the softer flex. Most golfers are using a shaft that’s too stiff for their game. They’d be pleasantly surprised if they switched to a softer shaft. When using a shaft that’s too stiff, you’ll probably have a lower and shorter ball trajectory. The ball will usually go off to the right (for right handed golfers) and your shots may not feel as solid. Torque, Weight, Length and Flex Points: A higher torque shaft will help if you want to launch the ball a little higherpared to a shaft with a high torque rating, a lower torque shaft will typically launch the ball lower with reduced spin. Weight is a personal choice. A lighter shafts will let you swing the club faster, which can increase distance. Just make sure you’re comfortable with the overall balance and feel of the club. Length is also a personal choice. A longer club will increase your clubhead speed giving you more distance, but you’ll usually have to give up some accuracy and consistency. A shorter club is easier to hit so your average shots will be straighter. For consistently long, straight hits, a shorter club makes more sense. Flex points, or kick points, refer to how "tip stiff" a shaft is. Generally, the shaft with the softer tip has a lower kick point, which means it will generate a higher initial launch angle. If you want to lower you ball flight, you should opt for a shaft with a higher kick point, or a stiffer tip.
