How to troubleshoot your computer s mouse

Copyright 2006 Otis Cooper The Motherboard is the largest component in your PC and the Central Processing Unit is its brain. But when your input devices go on the blink, you're shut down for awhile. When Computer Mice problems come, we don't panic as fast when we cannot access our hard drive. When you grab your Mouse and either click or roll the buttons and nothing happens, your computing fun stops. Even though the mouse is a little input device, you will wish you understood its every aspect when it dies. When input device failure occurs, the problem may lie with the computer's hardware, the mouse, the OS or Operating System. Let's take a look at what you should check when mouse failure occurs. If you need help with mouse components, ultimatepcrepair contains photos of every component in the computer. When the mouse dies, you should be able to perform the same functions with the keyboard. It may be a little closer but you won't be shut down completely. NO MOUSE MOVEMENT First...If the mouse has no movement, first look at the mouse connection at the rear of the computer. Be sure it is plugged in completely. Second...remove the plug and inspect for connectors or pins that may be broken or bent. The connector is color coded with green being that of the mouse. If your mouse uses the USB or Universal Serial Bus connector, check the connectors for any damage and be sure it is plugged in. MOUSE STOPPED DURING OPERATION Should your mouse quit in the middle of computing, save your work immediately. Press the ALT key to access your program and save your work. Check the connection in the rear to be sure it has not worked itself loose. If the connection is tight, inspect the mouse components for birt. Remove the retain and trackball inside the mouse. Clean the Ball with a mild solution and be sure all residence is removed. And clean the Ball Cavity with a cotton swab. Replace the ball and secure it with the retainer. Connect the mouse to the system unit and boot the the computer. Try clicking a program to see if the mouse wotks. If the mouse fails, check the device driver for the mouse. MOUSE POINTER MISBEHAVING This problem may be the result of your computer be affected by a virus. Use your Anti Virus software to scan your sysem for viruses. You can go to free-av to download a free version of anti virus software if you don't have anti virus software installed on your system. A corrupt device driver can also cause the mouse to misbehave. Check the device driver by opening the Control Panel, and open the System folder. Select the device driver tab and use the down arrow key to scroll down to the mouse. Expand the mouse to see if the driver is installed. If you see a yellow icon, the mouse has a problem and you can try to re-install the device driver. First uninstall the mouse from Windows and reboot the PC. After the system reboots, the operating system will find the mouse and re-install the driver. If you have a wireless or USB mouse, re-installing the special software may be in order. A misbehaving mouse may occur when you install another device on your system. If this happens, the mouse and new device may be conflicting with each other by using the same address. Unplug any hardware you installed and uninstall any software recently installed. See if the mouse operates properly. Use the System Restore utility to set your computer back to a time when the mouse was working as it should. The Registry can be the culprit of the mouse behaving badly. You can connect your mouse to another computer to verify it is bad. If the mouse works on another system, check the problems mentioned in the PC's operating system. MAINTAINING YOUR MOUSE To keep the mouse performing at its very best, you should take the time to clean the components of your mouse. Regularly clean the mouse, both inside and out. Clean the outside of the mouse with rubbing alcohol. This solution is best since it does not leave any residue. Take the time to clean a small area first, to to certain any damage to the plastic will not occur. The components inside the mouse to be cleaned are the Rollers, as well as the Ball. These two parts are the most important to be kept clean and always take great care in doing so. Carefully take apart the mouse by turning the retaining ring counter clockwise to unlock it. Remove the Ball and clean it with warm water and not alcohol. The rollers inside the moise cavity can be cleaned with alcohol by dampening a Q Tip and wiping the rollers gently. With clean hands, insert the ball back in the mouse and replace the retaining ring. Now enjoy your mouse and should it cause any problems, you're armed with the knowledge of how to diagnose and repair most problems

How to understand your computer s random access memory

Copyright 2006 Otis Cooper The System Memory is more commonly called RAM or Random Access Memory. This is the memory used by the computer to hold programs and data. This data is lost once the computer is turned off. Because demands by powerful software have skyrocketed, system memory requirements have been accelerating at an alarming pace. Random Access Memory is mounted directly onto the motherboard and transfers data by use of address and data buses. Each data bus consist of a number of circuits. In 1985, Intel had the 386 processor with its 32 bit bus and the Pentium processor came along in 1993 with a large 64 bit bus. RAM memory is made using DRAM Chips. RAM chips are large rectangular shaped and made with memory cells with support logic that reads and writes data. These chips must be continously refreshed, that is, data is constantly sent to allow the cells to hold data. Information being transferred between the CPU Chip and RAM memory is called a memory cycle. During the late 90s, the DIMM chip was the standard RAM Chip. So just what is this DIMM chip? Let's talk about the different Ram memory chips used in the computer. Static RAM is a type of RAM that holds its data without being refreshed, for as long as power is supplied to the circuit. This is contrasted to dynamic RAM (DRAM), which must be refreshed many times per second in order to hold its data contents. TYPES OF RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY CHIPS SIMM or Single Inline Memory Modules came on the scene in the early 90s. The SIMM chips first came with 30 pins. And then the 72 pin SIMM which had 32 bit data paths or buses. DIMM or Dual Inline Memory Module replace the Simm chips. These chips had 168 pins as compared to the 72 pin Simm variety. The data bus of the 30 pin chip was 8 bits while the 72 data bus can send data on the 32 bit data bus. DIMMs also come in a smaller form factors suitable for use in notebook computers. These SO DIMMs or Small Outline DIMMs are available in both 32-bit wide/72-pin and 64-bit wide/144-pin form factors. RIMM came in 1999 and the connectors for this new chip fits in the same sockets as the DIMM chips. They have 184 pins as compared to the Dimm which have 168 pins The RIMM chip was to come along when DRDRAM OR Direct Rambus DRAM: a totally new RAM architecture, was introduced. A single Rambus Channel has the potential to reach 500 MBps in burst mode; a 20- fold increase over DRAM. Computers will have DRAM for their main system memory, instead of SRAM, even though DRAMs are slower than SRAM. The reason that DRAMs are used is that they are cheaper and take up much less space. To build a 64 MB core memory from SRAMs would be very expensive All computers will contain a Memory Controller which, as its name implies, control the memory. It generates signals to regulate the reading and writing of information to and from the memory. The system chipset is normally where the memory controller is integrated. And just what are the chipsets? Well, they are like the traffic cops for all chips on the motherboard. They keep in check such data transfer from and to the CPU, data buses, printer, video card, and nearly all other devices. Data flow is such a critical issue in the operation and performance of so many parts of the computer, the chipset is one of the few components that have a truly major impact on your PC's quality, feature set, and speed. THE TYPE OF RAM MEMORY IN YOUR PC How can you know what type of memory is right for your PC. Using a memory configurator is one quick way to solve is problem. Some memory makers will have a memory configurator on their site. The best way to determine the type of memory you use in your computer is to read the owner's manual. No owner's manual, no problem. Visit your computers motherboard web site should you need assistance. Another very important thing to considerwhen buying your memory is to be sure it is compatible with your system. And you'll need to decide how much memory you need and consider the price, quality, availability, service, and warranty.

How to upgrade your own laptop for under 175

Do you have an old laptop lying around just collecting dust that for whatever reason, you no longer use? It just seems so antiquated, and slow. All you want to do is get rid of it. The hard drive is too small, and the memory sucks, plus you're already planning on getting a sweet newer laptop. I was in the same predicament. I have a 2 and half year old Compaq Presario 2500 that's seen better days. I was thinking of giving it away, or putting it to sleep in favor of a newer laptop. It was my workhorse for the longest time, and had seen some serious abuse and usage. I was ready to put it to sleep and move on when I decided to refurbish, and upgrade it. Just like I did, you may not have to get rid of that old laptop just yet. I'm going to show you how I breathed some some new life into my old laptop, and I did it for under $175. Consider this a perfect time to polish off your tech skills. I will show you how I upgraded my laptop, and how you can too. Unlike a PC, there are only a few components that can be easily upgraded in a laptop. The main 2 are the hard drive, and the memory. If you were skillful enough, you could replace the motherboard, and if you knew how to solder, then you could possibly fiddle with the processor as well, but we'll work under the assumption that this is beyond your knowledge. You won't need any fancy tools to upgrade your laptop. All you'll really need is a jeweler's screwdriver set which you can get for under $10 from any hobby store. Before you begin handling any of the internal components, make sure your laptop is turned off, and that you remove the battery. There's no sense in getting shocked. Also, make sure to get rid of any residual static electricity by touching the chassis before you dive in. I went to my favorite online hardware store, newegg, for my upgrade purchasing. I go to that website because it's loaded with every type of computer hardware under the sun, and they have the best deals I've found. I had to really focus on the task at hand because once there, I'm like a kid in a candy store. The hard drive is relatively easy to get to and replace on most laptops. However, I still had to check my laptop's user manual for hard drive removal instructions. Originally, my laptop had come with a 40GB hard drive, but I wanted to double that. I found an 80GB Western Digital Scorpio hard drive at newegg , and for only 80. 99, this is the one I went with. Next came the memory. Originally, my laptop came with a paltry 256MB of RAM. I wanted at least 1GB because my laptop had been moving glacially slow. I'm not sure how I dealt with it for all those years. Please note, that not all laptops can support a memory upgrade so you should make sure yours can before you buy anything. To see if mine could, I went to ramfinder. You can go there too and see how much RAM your laptop can support. Fortunately, the Compaq Presario 2500 can support 1 GB so I went with two 512MB Corsair memory sticks, which I got from NewEgg for only $45.99 each. Once I had the hard drive and the memory installed, I re-loaded the operating system, and all the drivers. The whole process from start to finish (after I had the components shipped to me) took about 45 minutes, and now I have a laptop that behaves like new but cost me only $172. 97. Considering a new laptop with equal components would have cost me between $700-$900, I think I did pretty good, and you will too. Just follow this simple guide and you can save yourself hundreds of dollars while extending the life of that old laptop of yours.

I just got my brand new notebook

I recently got a 17 inch notebook, and am quite impressed with its quality. It is so much better than the old IBM Thinkpad that I had years ago. Back then, laptop computers were big and bulky, the screen resolution was poor, they were even more expensive than now, and the batteries had very low life expectancy. But my new Dell 17 inch notebook is everything that my old laptop was not. It is sleek, low-profile, with hours of battery life, and a high-resolution lcd screen that is just simply a joy to look at. I put off getting my new 17 inch notebook for quite a long time. I have always found the process of buying a new computer agonizing. No matter how long you wait, the very next week after you buy whatever system you have chosen to purchase, there is something cheaper and more powerful at a lower price and with a better warranty. It is enough to drive you completely batty. Nevertheless, I knew that the convenience of a new laptop computer was worth it, and eventually I broke down and bought my new 17 inch notebook. And I am sure glad that I did. There is nothing that beats a laptop computer. The best thing about my 17 inch notebook is how easy it makes work on the go. With the prevalence of wifi coffee houses, I can work from my 17 inch notebook from all about town. I do a considerable amount of freelancing, so the luxury of being able to do all my work on the go, when I want, and from where I want, makes my life almost feel like a permanent vacation. And when I am done with my 17 inch notebook, I slip it into my laptop computer sleeve, and can carry it around me anywhere. It is no burden at all, because of its light weight, and though I occasionally worry about having it stolen, or accidentally damaged, so far no harm has come to my computer. My sturdy 17 inch notebook has really revolutionized my life. Of course, for many people, getting a new 17 inch notebook computer like I have done might be a bad idea. If you are not good at keeping track of your stuff, it is a definite no. You could easily lose your 17 inch notebook computer, along with all of your work and data, due to one careless mistake.

    Iggy discovers usb networking

My new laptop is fantastic, with it's nice new squeaky-clean operating system it runs like a dream. But it wasn't long before I had to face the technical challenge of getting all my old data from my old desktop computer (which was bursting at the seams with data!) onto my new laptop. I was also intending to format and give away my old computer, so I could not afford to lose any of this data in the process. I sat down at my old computer and listed all of my important files to assess exactly what and how much data I needed to transfer over to the new laptop. Including my pictures, MP3's, Office documents, work backup's and so on, I was looking at transferring about 20 Gigabytes worth of data, it seems to build up so quickly! Thank goodness for my new laptop's 100 Gigabyte Hard Drive, which will allow me to transfer all of my data to it and still have room for a lot more. I know that the main application programmes (Word, Excel and so on) from my old computer will all have to be reinstalled on to the new laptop from their original install disks, but how do I get all the rest of the data over to the new laptop? Floppy disk? - no way, even if my laptop had a floppy disk drive I would need about 14,000 disks! CD or DVD? - Both my new laptop and my old computer have CD ROM drives, to get all my data over using CD's I would need about 30 disks as well as some software to package all the data up nice and tidily across the 30 disks, viable but a lot of work and time needed. DVD's would be better but my old computer does not have a DVD drive! There must be an easier way. USB Memory Stick? - Not really a viable option, the maximum capacity of the USB Memory Stick that I can afford is 512MB, so this would require about 40 swaps from the old computer to the new and as my old computer is only USB1.1 which transfers at 1.5 mega bytes this process is going to be possible but really slow. Networking? - Apparently I could network my two machines together with a "Cross Wired Network lead" and a copy of "Networking Computers for Dummies", but unfortunately my old dinosaur of a computer does not have a network card! Network cards are cheap enough but I still don't want to spend any money on this old computer and really don't fancy fiddling around inside the desktop. Although it does sound good to be able to connect the two computers together and transfer the data through the cable. This is when I came across a very handy cable called a USB Data Link Cable. Apparently I can just plug one end into the USB port on my old PC and the other end into the USB port on my new laptop and then as if by magic, I should have a USB Network between both computers. Now this sounds more like it! Both my computers have USB ports and even though my old computer is USB1.1 and my new laptop is USB2.0 the cable should work anyway, although the transfer rate will only be at the lower USB1.1 speed. After finding more about this cable on the Internet I found out that it is also known as a USB File/Data Transfer Cable. Once connected, the transfer of data is done quickly and effortlessly by simply dragging and dropping files from one window to another, just as you normally would when moving files around on your system. So I ordered one online right away. The USB Data Transfer Cable arrived the next day and I got down to the business of getting the thing to work, the hardest part was working out the blatantly "translated" instructions. All I had to do was install the included software from the CD, once only on each of my computers, then plug the cable into a USB port on each computer and run the software. Two Windows Explorer type windows appeared, one showing files on the laptop and the other showing files on the PC, then I simply dragged and dropped files between the two computers. I was amazed, this USB cable solution was fantastic. It was so easy to set up and turned out to be the cheapest option by far at only Ј15 and much less hassle than any other option, almost too good to be true, magic!

Ink and toner cartridges how do i start an online business from home on a low budget part 1

About a year ago I took over an existing online business from a friend of mine selling ink, toner and other printing consumables and decided that there was a lot of potential for promoting the website more aggressively over the internet. I started with maybe a hundred dollars or so and a handful of customers carrying over from the previous owner. One benefit was inheriting his website as that gave me a good benchmark on what I wanted and didn’t want when I got my own going. Now a year later I have around ten times as many customers, a respectable page ranking in Google (more about this later), first page search engine rankings (SERP’s) in MSN with respectable SERP’s in Yahoo and Google still needs some work. Although I still have a long way to go (in truth I will always have a list of more stuff to do) I’ve made a good start and by all accounts done quite well considering my limited resources. I have found that there are a great deal of free or very cheap resources you can utilise for building and promoting a business online and this is what I shall be passing on through this series. Although the following guide talks about starting an online business selling printing consumables in Australia you can apply much of it to other business types and I would imagine in other countries. Why do you want to be in business & does having an online business suit you ?:- Often people go into business with intention to get filthy rich overnight and then find themselves trapped with a crumbling edifice that consumes their lives but they have no passion for. So the question is why do you want to be in business to begin with? If your answer is something like ‘to make tons of money’ at some point you will need to rethink this as it wont be enough anymore. Of course I want to make more money than I currently do but it’s the lifestyle I will have when I have more money that creates my goals for next year, five years etc. Personally my desire was to create a place on the internet people could go and shop with peace of mind knowing that they would be getting great service, great prices etc. My focus is always on developing good relationships with my customers and I believe this psychology actually affects my attitude to how I run my business as I am constantly looking for ways to better serve my customers needs rather than trying to figure out how to make more profit. I can honestly tell you that I rarely think about building my business in terms of profits, rather I try to identify ways to improve products and services to give current customers more bang for their buck and attract new clients. As to whether what you wish to do would be suited to having your business online this is a trick question really because I can honestly say that it doesn’t matter what you do, you should definitely have a website for it ! If you have any doubts about whether its worth spending time and money getting your business online you can go to nichebot/ type a word into the box that represents a likely keyword for your business and look at what’s in the count column to see how many people have used that word or words in the last 60 days. Then it’s up to you as to whether you would like these people coming to your site as an additional source of revenue or whether you’re happy to let them go to your competition. Anyway its about time I got into the good stuff so here goes……. Registering your business & domain name:- Your business name and domain name – You obviously need to decide on a business name and may have already done so but what may not be so obvious is taking into consideration your websites domain name BEFORE you choose a name for your business. Basically a domain name is what you call your website so for example the domain name for my website is “cartridgespecialists. au” and generally speaking you would have your domain name ending with either. au or. net. au and this makes you subject to the laws of Australian domain name registration as explained below. If you are going to register a website ending in either. au or. net. au there are some rules you need to know about. Australian rules of domain name registration state “The domain name you order should have either be an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the supplied business registration, or it should bear a close and substantial connection to the domain name”, so before you rush out and register that really cool business name you’ve just thought of its worth your while checking first to see if the domain name has been taken or not. You don’t have to register your domain name ending as above, you can choose to register an international domain name such as or even use the name or a place or person instead of an Australian domain or in addition to. In fact this can be a smart thing to do if you’re looking for as many ways as possible to protect the name of your business or something you’re selling. Choosing & registering a domain name - To choose a domain name you need to go to somewhere like Netregistry to see what’s available and as I mentioned above you’ll want to do this at the same time if not before registering the name for your business. There are quite a few places you can go to for checking whether the domain name you’ve chosen is available or not. The one I used is the one mentioned above but you don’t have to use them there are plenty of others. Its worth shopping around though as the prices vary quite a bit and it makes no difference at all who you register your domain name through as they all have to access their data from the same place meaning as soon as you register your domain no one else can get it even if they go to a different site to the one you used. Using your top keywords in your domain name - If possible you should have the main keyword/s for your business in your domain name as it helps quite a bit with promoting your website online and getting lots of people to come to it. Keywords are something we’ll be covering later in much more depth but they are the words people use when they search for information on the internet using the search engines (you’ve heard of Google right ?). Whatever business you’re in start thinking about the likely words people are going to use to find you on the internet. For example for my business ‘ink, toner & cartridges’ are the 3 top keywords people use in my industry when doing searches in google, yahoo etc. Register for more than 1 year - When you register your domain name you should do so for at least 2 years as it will help you promote your website to the search engines and it’s not expensive at all really. Sole trader, partnership or company? – This is very straightforward and is simply a matter of going to the government dept in your state that handles the registration of business names and companies. I’m not an accountant so I’m not going to go too much into which type you should use except to say that you should not choose one of these on the basis of wanting to protect your business name, logo or something the business sells that you’ve invented. Trademark and patents are designed for this and there are lawyers you should consult who specialise in setting them up. Expired domains – I’ll go into this more later on but thought I’d give you a little taste of it now. Now that you know a little about domain name what do you imagine happens to the ones that people decide not to reregister each year or 2 years ? Well they go back into the pool and become available for the next person to grab but until someone else registers that domain again what about all the people (otherwise know as ‘traffic’) who are still trying to find that site ? That’s right expired domains can be a great way to get traffic to your new site immediately for a very low cost and you can replicate this as many times as you want even if you only register an expired domain for a year it can be a very worthwhile exercise !! More about this later.... Well that’s for the first article in the series there’s a checklist below to help you keep on track. Hope you enjoyed it and stay tuned for the rest……….. What do I have to do checklist………… For the sake of keeping it simple I’ll assume that you’ve chosen to register as a sole trader (this is where most of us start out anyway) in Victoria. Of course these figures vary from state to state for the business name and how much you pay for your domain depends on where you get it from so shop around! 1. In the early days there was a vast difference between an inkjet printer and its laser version but with time the difference has narrowed down to point where it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between the two. Most individuals continue to use the Inkjet printers, as they are less expensive and nearly all of them are colour capable. The quality of the inkjet printers has improved over time and now there is not a huge difference in printing quality with the Laser printers. It’s for this reason that small or home business can use an inkjet printer without having to worry about documents looking unclear or looking cheap. The laser printer is capable of printing much faster and usually produces better quality image, it is far more expensive as compared to the Inkjet version. Laser printers are usually used for black printing but there are colour laser printers available now. Having pointed that out, it is also useful to note that the general rule of the thumb for printers is ‘the lesser the cost of the printer, the more expensive the running cost”. This could however depend on the volume of printing the printer is being used for. If the printing volume were minimal, it would be more cost effective to use an inkjet printer. It is very easy to get carried away by the initial price of an inkjet printer but people buying them are often not aware that the running cost of the machine would play a huge part and should be factored into the decision making. This would be better understood with an example. Let us consider a Canon i320 colour bubble jet printer. It usually does not cost more than Ј30 obviously subject to the discounts applicable at your store. The cost of a cartridge is usually in the Ј10 range and on an average it prints 170 pages. Even if you print as few as 7 pages a day that works out to 2100 pages over the year. This in turn works out to an annual expense of approximately Ј135. The amount one spends on cartridges is approximately 4 times the price of the printer in the first year itself. This is the reason the subsequent expenditure needs to be taken into consideration while buying a printer. Inkjet printers come with some added problems that need to be looked at and taken into consideration. 1. To begin with they are not as fast as the Laser printers. This is one reason why Inkjet printers are not recommended when printing needs to be done in large volumes. 2. They are known to throw up cartridge error messages even though the cartridges might be working just fine. This is not to say that Inkjet printers are always problematic but these are just a few errors that do crop up once in a while. 3. The print can also start going haywire sometimes and it may start printing in endless loops. 4. It is often difficult to minimize and regulate the amount of ink being used in the Inkjet printers. 5. There is a difference in quality of an Inkjet print and a laser print. Often the laser print is of better quality. It is for these reasons that the laser printers sales have taken of in a very big way in spite of being a more expensive buy. However, in comparison to the laser printers, there are a few positives about the inkjet printers, which are more suitable to the requirements of a small or home business where they do not need to print as many in terms of volumes. Colour laser printers have been around for some time but they were frightfully expensive a few years ago. A recent study found that last year nearly 1.85 million colour laser printers were sold, a substantial growth from the previous year. A large number of offices are going in for the colour page printers. This is however not recommended if you do not need to print fliers or brochures in large volumes consistently. There are a few other advantages that come with a laser printer, for example: 1. Using a duplex unit: This would enable the user to print back to back. This is particularly useful for creating brochures and leaflets. 2. Add a paper drawer: This would reduce the number of user interventions and in turn reduces the printer errors 3. Assigning different paper trays for different drafts can be used to print different documents without messing about with the tray each time. 4. An Ethernet or a wireless network card can be added to the printer to attach it to a network. This functionality can be availed in the laser printer. This is just to outline the benefits of using each kind of a printer. This is aimed at helping the user to weigh the pros and the cons before buying a printer.

    Inside view on printers

Printers have certainly come a long way since the inception of the character and and dot matrix printers. These ancient products (ancient in technical terms being as few as 10-15 years) were what are known as impact printers, simply because they needed to make a physical connection with the paper in order to achieve the ink-on-paper result. Dot matrix printers came equipped with a group of pins that touched a ribbon which then connected with paper to produce the finished product. Character printers, which worked on the same principle as electric typewriters, used a bar or ball whose surface was embossed with all the characters you now see on any keyboard. These characters made contact with the ribbon, which in turn made contact with the paper. Today we use non-impact printers - those that do not make physical contact with the paper to create the papered reproduction. The most prevalent for home or small office use is the inkjet printer - an economical choice for all but the most serious graphic arts requirements. An inkjet printer produces the images and type it delivers from computer to paper by means of miniscule drops of ink. So miniscule, in fact, that a human hair would seem big by comparison. Standard ink drops of an inkjet printer have a diameter range of 50-60 microns. Arranged very precisely, these ink drops come in various resolutions (the higher the resolution, the clearer and more life like the output.) while 800x600 dpi (dots per inch) is a typical SOHO (small office home office) resolution producing quite adequate print quality, an inkjet printer can offer resolutions as high as 1440x720 dpi. Adding color to the mix can produce images nearly as high in quality as a laser printer product. There are five basic parts to an inkjet printer: the print head assembly, the paper feed assembly, circuitry control, power supply, and printer ports. The print head assembly is the heart of the printer workings. It's what brings the ink to paper by means of a row of nozzles. The print head may be part of the inner workings of a printer cartridge, or they may be separate parts. Cartridges are responsible for delivering color and shading. Most inkjet printers made nowadays offer color printing. Some may require as many as three distinct cartridges, but generally at least two - one black, one color. The motor is part of the print head assembly as well. It's the part that enables the ink and cartridges to move across the paper and produce the hard copy. It also keeps the cartridge stable when not in use. The paper feed assembly includes the paper tray, which holds the paper ready for a printing request, and the rollers, which deliver the paper to the ink when a printing job is requested. The power supply is simple - it's what gets the electricity to your printer so that it can do its job. Printer circuitry controls take the message from your keyboard and mouse and deliver it to the printer so that the requested hard copy can be produced. Printer ports, also referred to as interface ports, much like a telephone jack, enable the peripheral (the printer) to talk to the computer. While in older models parallel ports were the norm, the newest printer models connect via USB ports, which require a special USB cord.

Inside your inkjet printer how does it work

Have you ever wondered how your inkjet printer works? How does the ink get from the inkjet cartridge to the paper? Why is the print quality is so clear? Why the printing is so quiet? Generally, all that most people know is that there's some movement and a faint high pitched sound when it's printing something -- and then the finished document comes out. Unlike dot matrix and character printers that strike ribbons to create an image, inkjet printers do not physically touch the paper. All inkjet printers function using the same basic principles. Tiny ink droplets are "jetted" (or pushed) out multiple holes onto paper in a controlled and systematic fashion. This is where the term "inkjet" comes from. The size of ink droplets, speed and reliability of this type of printer has been continuously improving since its inception in 1976. In 1993, Epson was the first manufacturer to produce an inkjet printer using micro-piezo technology. The Epson Stylus 800 was the first printer to use the multi-layer actuator printhead (the printhead is the part of the printer that holds numerous tiny nozzles that actually squirts the ink onto paper). This specific printhead utilized an electro-mechanical element that acted like a tiny control room. When pulses of electricity passed through, it that gave specific signals to fire individual or multiple nozzles loaded with ink. Micro-piezo technology utilized a tiny crystal in each individual nozzle that when electrically energized, would vibrate or bend causing a controlled amount of ink to be forced out onto paper. When the electrical current is off, the crystal bends back to its original shape, creating a vacuum, thus pulling ink into the nozzle from the reservoir for the next commanded fire. The Epson printhead was fixed to the carriage so it never needed replacing (the printer carriage is what moves laterally across the paper). This also kept the cost of ink cartridges low since they were little more than reservoirs of ink. This breakthrough printer produced a whopping 360 dpi (dots per inch) that was deemed, almost "letter quality" at the time. With a printing speed of 150 - 180 characters per second, the new Epson became the user favorite printer for home and office. At the same time, HP was using a similar technology. A thermal jetting system was utilized in their printhead. The printhead still acted like the control room but each individual nozzle was instead independently super heated by electricity, which caused the ink to explode onto the paper. HP claims the temperature of a fired inkjet nozzle approaches that of the surface of the sun. HP elected to put the printhead on the inkjet cartridge itself instead of mounting it permanently to the carriage. Since each inkjet cartridge would have its own printhead, replacement cartridges would be more expensive for these printers. HP inkjet cartridges also could not print as fast as Epson because each nozzle needed to cool after firing. This heating technology also limited the types of inks that could be used. In the 1990's, Canon, Epson and HP engineered printheads that applied even smaller droplets of ink, drastically improving dpi and resolution. While Canon and HP could produce a 6 - 10 picoliter droplet size from one nozzle, Epson was about half the size (between 3 - 6 picoliters). Currently, there are printers available which will produce an amazing 1 picoliter droplet! To get an idea of how small this is; a human hair is about 12 picoliters in diameter. Most human eyes can't see one jetted droplet of ink on paper. Inkjet printers have come a long way since their first inception. Printers today are twice as fast as their predecessors were, and are cheaper than ever. Many printers can easily produce color photo quality images in at an incredible 6000 dpi. As time goes on and as demand for printing remains high, the quality, speed and features of inkjet printers will only continue to improve.

    Introduction of a basic printer

We would have been still constructing the Panama Canal but for the modern gigantic construction equipments. These Herculean machines made life easy for us by their enormous strengths and capacities for long drawn heavy duties under all torturous conditions. To think that these engineering marvels work for reclaiming lands from bays, striking piles into the hard sea beds or drilling tunnels deep below the sea beds (Trans European Tunnel connecting England to France), is mind boggling. The list can go endless but for the scope of this article which is limited. Equipments to Suit All Needs Construction equipments may be classified as per needs and further by capacities. 1. Excavating and Earth moving: These gigantic machines are hydraulically operated to safeguard from shock failures. These are the first machines to be employed for preparing the construction sites. Land leveling by digging and cutting terrains are done by excavators of appropriate capacities which run into 1000s of HP. Basic earth movers include dozers, tippers and loaders. 2. Concrete processors: Batch or continuous concrete mixers are computer programmed for consistent precise mix. These are stationed permanently near the site or in the factory depending on convenience. Small batch mixers of less than one quintal capacities are portable. The concrete is transported from far off plants in transit mixers of minimum capacity 6 cubic meters by volume. Concrete is poured to the spot using concrete pumps. 3. Bar bending machines: Small high torque generating bar bending machines are handy in bending and forming construction steel bars. These are available in various specifications. 4. Rollers and compactors: Rollers are employed to compact the ground after dozers have leveled it. Some rollers are also equipped with vibrating compactors eliminating the need for separate compacting. For small areas like indoors vibrating plate compactors, which generate up to 1000kgf maybe used. These are just about the equipments fundamentally required for construction of homes and offices. Road Construction For road construction, depending on whether the road is being asphalted or concretized, the equipments change. Asphalt mixers and asphalt pavers take-up the job of road laying to perfection. Concrete road pavers, although work on similar principle, can’t finish the road-laying as concrete needs setting time. There is a need for faster laying technique. Road surface finishing is by a technique called VDF, which stands for vacuum dewatered flooring. Smoother finishes are given by power trowels and anti skid finishes by brooms, mechanized or manual.

    Ipod domination

iPod Is Dominating the Market, and There Is More to Come iPod contributes 12-14% of total company revenues, a number industry experts believe will continue to increase. With this increase comes pressure on gross margins, as the blended iPod gross margin of 20% compares unfavorably with Apple’s corporate average of 27-28%. The iPod helped augment Apple’s growth by expanding its addressable market from the core computer market, which continues to grow, but at slower rates. To increase penetration of the rapidly growing MP3 player market, Apple launched the iPod Mini internationally in July 2004, and HP’s iPod launch is scheduled for later in summer. ipodreviewforum Apple’s entry into the digital music player market (MP3 market) with its popular iPod expanded the company’s addressable market and signaled a turn in Apple’s strategy. The iPod is a cultural phenomenon that is capitalizing on the convergence of digital consumer electronics and the computer, and Apple’s position as an early mover enabled it to achieve the number-one position in the marketplace. iPod adoption continues to accelerate, with little indication of a slowdown. It took Apple approximately 18 months to sell its first million iPods, but its second million came in six months and its third million came in four. In fact, it appears that only its suppliers can slow it down, in particular the hard-drive vendors, which are having a difficult time meeting demand. Industry experts believe that iPod’s growth will remain strong in the foreseeable future and do not expect any significant customer fallout stemming from Apple’s inability to meet demand. An analysis of the launch of the Sony Walkman in 1979 indicates the market opportunity for a revolutionary portable music player will remain strong for several years to come and Apple is expected to maintain a strong share for the next few years (unlike Sony’s experience with the Walkman). While iPod and iTunes generate significant awareness of the Apple product, they have done little to grow Apple’s core Mac business. Experts attribute this mainly to Apple’s aboveaverage pricing, along with continued ignorance on the part of consumers regarding the compatibility of Windows and Mac. With regard to pricing, the average consumer desktop PC retails for $1,019, which is $280 below Apple’s low-end price point on Apple’s now, discontinued flat-panel iMac. Furthermore, the industry ASP is falling as most of the growth in the market is taking place in the sub-$1,000 market. With regard to the compatibility of Windows and Mac OS X, even though Apple made a concerted effort to educate consumers about the ease with which these two products work together, it has fallen on deaf ears for the most part. Apple made some progress through its retail stores, where it estimates half of Mac purchases are from first-time buyers, but for Apple’s stock to work over the long term, the company needs to maintain share against Windows, at a minimum. Understandably, Apple wants to avoid selling PCs at a loss, but unfortunately the growth prospects for $1,000-plus PCs are limited. This presents a conundrum for Apple longer term, but for now it maintains its current strategy. Incidentally, Apple’s revenue share has held much better, and while this is not an often-discussed topic, revenue share is probably more important than unit share. ipodreviewforum

Isn t it about time you had a memory upgrade

When was the last time your computer or the internet or life for that matter was working too good? Never right? My point is that we stop being successful in anything that we do if we sit back and let things come to us. There is no secret way to have success without working for it. The work is to always be improving. So what does this have to do with computers and memory upgrade? Well for one thing life in general is getting more and more to be computer run. If you don't update your technology or do memory upgrade fast enough you can be in the "dark ages," before you notice. Even personal computers have large hard drives and very fast processor speeds, and it is making a huge difference in the productivity of people in this day and age. Whether you are a internet shopper, or a database guru, or a writer, or gamer, or researcher, the tools that you have with computers are essential to doing the amount of work that you are able to do. So how do you improve your productivity? Well there are three basic ways that come to mind: 1) buy the latest and greatest computer on the market to get all of the newest technologies, 2) you can make sure a virus isn't causing problems, 3) memory upgrade -- go out and buy extra memory and either put it yourself for free (not recommended) or let an expert do it, or 4) you can buy software that can analyze your computer make suggestions, changes, repairs, etc. in order to increase efficiency. It is this last method that I want to talk about more. Basically efficiency software is the best overall option for several reasons. First it is cheaper than buying all new equipment or even buying extra memory cards (especially if you are having someone install them for you). This kind of "memory upgrade"--that is buying efficiency software--is also a heck of a lot easier. Basically if you can put a CD into a CD-drive you can run this software. It automatically searches and analyze your entire system and it does all this fast. It also stays on your computer and suggests things to increase efficiency in your every day operations. It really is like hiring your own 24-7 support tech. It allows you to avoid all the hassles of going out and buying another system, then setting it all up the way you want it and need it, then transferring all of your valuable information to it, and on and on. You don't have to learn how to build a computer and find out where the memory cards go. You don't have to risk zapping a motherboard with a simple thing like static electricity. Take it from me, it saves you a lot of time and hassle. So if this alternative to memory upgrade sounds good to you, you should do a search either for memory upgrade or for efficiency software. There is a wealth of information waiting for you to learn and to make the correct decision in this battle against time we call productivity.

It consultants desktops notebooks and pdas as profit centers

If you’re one of those IT consultants who breaks out in hives at the thought of getting your hands dirty with low-margin sales of desktop PCs, notebooks or PDAs, you may not be looking far enough beyond the box. In this article, we’ll look at how to profit from your clients’ needs for full-service support of desktops, notebooks and PDAs. IT Consultants Roles as Technology Influencers IT consultants who have been in business awhile already know that smart PC hardware selection can make installation, support, troubleshooting and upgrading work much easier. Selecting the right PCs and related peripherals can dramatically boost system reliability, which helps to keep your valued clients happy. Pick the wrong PC hardware and well, let’s not even go there! When PC hardware starts acting up, clients get peeved . . . and clients may actually “blame” your IT consultants for their IT-related problems. As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to stay on the “good” side of the folks that authorize your service agreements and sign your big retainer checks. New Advances in Technology Despite all the advances during the past few years, the venerable desktop, notebook and server have remained the staples of the PC hardware world. Sure, there are newcomers. Since the mid-‘90s, both Palm and Microsoft have spearheaded competing handheld standards. But the main PC hardware world has not seen much change by IT consultants. And now there are special-purpose rack-mountable servers, with surely more to come, dedicated to the unique demands of serving high-volume Web sites. IT Consultants Have a Huge Profit Opportunity with Hardware Sales IT consultants play an extremely important role as your clients’ primary technology influencer – the one who recommends what to buy. This responsibility presents a huge business opportunity for IT consultants with desktops, notebooks and PDAs. Copyright MMI-MMVI, Computer Consultants Secrets. It consultants don t skimp on hardware with power users

As IT consultants, whatever you do, don't let your clients skimp on PC purchases for power users who run high-end software. While many of your small business clients’ employees depend mainly on software with modest hardware requirements, such as basic word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail and Web browsing software, there are certainly exceptions. Make sure you know who your clients’ power users are. Power Users Need Cutting Edge Technology If you have clients that depend on an advanced software application, such as graphic design, computer assisted design (CAD) or financial modeling, as IT consultants, you may want to advise your clients to implicitly "eat" that sky-high first year’s depreciation on the purchase of the latest and greatest PC hardware. With processor and memory-intensive software applications, the employee productivity your clients will gain with leading-edge PC hardware likely will offset any major depreciation cost concerns. Keep In Mind The Users' Salary Consider the salary required to attract and retain highly technical professionals who run advanced software applications. (As IT consultants, this high-salary-requirement-reality should come as no surprise.) For example, if a clients of yours has a veteran graphic design artist or engineer on payroll at a $60,000 base salary, an extra $1,000 a year on PC-related expenses for this technical wizard easily could drive a productivity gain that makes the incremental expense seem trivial. Get To Know Your Users The moral of story: get to know your clients’ power users and their specific software applications needs. Just as important, clients’ power users are a kind of influencer that you need to be very aware of. Your clients’ power users are often very powerful “votes” when it comes to making decisions about hiring (and firing) IT consultants. IT Consultants Should Consider "Hand Me Downs" In many small businesses, the premium performance PC purchased for the power user gets replaced every year or two, and is passed down to an end user with less demanding software requirements. This is one way to extend the life of an expensive, high-end PC, while minimizing the out-of-pocket and related support expenses of bringing new PC hardware into your company. Make sure your computer support, asset management and proactive maintenance plans all take this hand-me-down phenomenon into account. Copyright MMI-MMVI, Small Biz Tech Talk. It spending putting a budget surplus to good use

If you sell to government, non-profit or educational accounts, your firm may be accustomed to managing this next challenge. But, if sales to small businesses are your bread and butter, you may not as tuned into the "use it or lose it" purchasing philosophy in IT spending. For example, if you’re the science department chairperson for a local school district, and you have a $500,000 budget this year for computer products, you "need" to spend it. IT Spending: Use It or Lose It If you don't spend the money, any funds left over will not carry forward to next year. And, the board of education probably will believe your department no longer needs the full annual $500,000 budget for computer products. Your department’s allocation likely will be reduced going forward. So there’s a year-end rush to deplete the technology budget account; regardless of whether the timing is right for getting the best purchase value or controlling computer support costs. Small Businesses Often Fall Into The Same IT Spending Trip Just because a client is having a "great" year, quarter or month, your client shouldn’t rush out to buy every PC gadget and gizmo he or she has ever dreamed of having or heard someone gushing about. As your clients’ virtual CIO, when appropriate, you need to act as their IT "grown-up" (be a little more sensitive in how you assume this role though) and remind them of the priorities spelled out in their annual technology plan. Make Sure Your Clients' Plan Includes IT Spending You have a written IT project plan for your clients, right? If not, a detailed project plan not only keeps your clients’ IT spending priorities straight, a project plan assures your company a steady stream of recurring consulting revenue throughout the year.
