Holiday decorating tips thanksgiving a time for gratitude and giving

Get new holiday decorating ideas for Thanksgiving and Autumn. Start a new family tradition. Your home will look fabulous and your guests will love you. Turkey and Cranberries! Yeah! Before you dig into that turkey, take a moment for each person to say one sentence beginning with... "Today, I am grateful for..." You will be surprised at what children say, so keep a notebook handy to write down the gratitudes, or, better yet, record the event. Thanksgiving Decorating Tips "Welcome to Our Home" Ideas Holiday decorating isn't just for Christmas! Door wreaths welcome all to your home and set the stage for celebrating. Make a simple wreath to hang on your front door with Thanksgiving colors--brown, russet, olive green. Use tree branches from your garden; attach a few gourds, nuts, and ribbons. Place a gorgeous mum by your front door. You can plant it later and get flowers next Thanksgiving to use inside. It just takes one bright spot near your front door to attract the eye of arriving guests. Wrap your front door with gift wrap appropriate to Thanksgiving. Make a "welcome to our home" banner. Add your ribbons and fall leaves. Group vines, pumpkins, and mums for display impact near the front entrance. Adjust the vines to add height and movement. Fall Leaves make great interior and exterior decorations. Be sure to hose off any bugs! Interior Holiday Decorating Tips Tie ribbons around your candle bases and around your floral arrangements. Set fall-color leaves under your decorations. Safety Tip: Keep leaves separated from melting candle wax. Extend your flower arrangements with fall tree branches. Just one flower package makes a huge impact when you divide and spread it around. Use copper, bronze, and gold spray paint to dress up plain gourds. Fill a glass or crystal bowl with the gourds, oranges, and nuts. Display vegetables and mini pumpkins on a tray. Fill in any gaps with fall leaves, moss, straw, or wheat. If orange clashes with your home's interior, use green apples and spray paint the mini-pumpkins. Did I already say leaves? Here's another way to add fall color: Place the leaves in your green potted-plants. One beautiful way to kick off your holiday season: Wrap tiny gifts in gold foil; top off with brown and russet ribbons, and place the gifts on the dinner plate. Your table will look fabulous and your guests will love the thought. Happy Thanksgiving! © Jeanette Fisher

    Holiday s best selling toys

This holiday season has sent parents in droves to find the ideal gifts for their sons and daughters. So, what is it that your children are dying to have? One of the biggest sellers this year is anything to do with Stars Wars! With the release of the final prequel on DVD, children are prepared to fight the dark side with lightsabers, action figures, and Darth Vadar voice changing masks. For boys and girls alike, this is a guaranteed pleaser. Also making an appearance on Christmas lists this year are the dolls and accessories from the movie, "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus". Mattel Entertainment manages to perfectly time the release of their Barbie series movies every year to play in perfectly with the holiday season. This year has been no different. Little girls everywhere will be waking up to Princess Annika and her flying horse. For younger children, Fisher-Price's Tumble Time Tigger is a must for this holiday season. This loveable Winnie the Pooh character does cartwheels, stands on his head, and dances. He is also sound-activated, so he will keep going with your child's laughter and clapping. BRATZ dolls are also big with girls this year. Not only do they have the regular line, but the secondary line of BRATZ Big Babyz is a new twist on an already popular trend. However, some parents are resisting their daughters' pleas, as these dolls are known for their scantily designed clothes and controversial trade name. If you remember the hysteria over Tickle Me Elmo a few years ago (like anyone can forget), then it should be of no surprise that Elmo is big again this year with the "Shout!" Dancing Elmo Doll. This adorable Sesame Street native is getting kids moving with his rendition of "Make Me Wanna Shout!" and a dance to go along with it. No one can resist such a cute little monster! Aquadoodle is another ingenious gift idea by Spinmasters. This is a large pad that allows children to draw with a "magic" pen filled with water, which disappears in a short time. Therefore, there is no mess to clean up and this pen will not end up decorating your walls. VTech V. Smile TV Learning System is an answer to the video game craze, but is targeted more toward education. These games teach children from ages 3-7 math skills, English, reasoning, and science and plug directly into your television for convenience. The various LeapFrog Learning products are also an option for making learning fun. With several choices to focus on different age levels and information categories, you can find exactly what will be most beneficial for your child. You can choose laptops, reading systems, or math games to give the gift of knowledge this holiday season.

Holiday sanity savers from a mostly sane mom

The Holidays are a stressful time. Between the additional errands, the extra traffic, and the stress of spending money that you don’t have – even the sanest mom will be questioning her sanity as the holidays near. Here are a few ideas to help you keep your sanity this holiday season. Make a list (and check it twice). Keep your shopping list in your purse to keep from being overwhelmed or worse – overspending. If you walk into a store and are bedazzled by all the shiny things, I can relate. I get so overwhelmed that I get nothing accomplished. But, as the Holidays near, I tend to switch into “SuperMarket Sweep” mode and I start throwing everything into my cart (whether I really need it or not). Having a list can help fight this urge, keep you sane – and help your budget stay sane in the process. As soon as you start buying, start wrapping. There's nothing more stressful than tackling a mountain of unwrapped gifts two days before Christmas. Save on the cost of wrapping paper by buying it after the holiday each year and stowing it away for next year. Be sure to attach gift tags as you wrap. If you're wrapping a month in advance, there's no way you're going to remember what that funky rectangular shaped box is, let alone who it's for. To save time and sanity, wrap gifts that go together in all the same paper. For instance, wrap all gifts that will be going with you to your mother-in-law's on Christmas Eve in the red paper with the gingerbread men. And put all gifts for your friends and neighbors in the blue paper with the snowflakes, etc. Cook in advance. Did you know that you can make mashed potatoes during the summer, freeze them, and have them ready for the holidays? Mashed potatoes can be kept in the freezer for months if you use a freezer-friendly recipe. Cook your mashed potatoes in advance and offer to bring them to Christmas dinner. You can skip the stress of cooking, because they’ll be ready and waiting for you. Limit your travel. The holidays are about family, but they are also about togetherness and making memories. If you’re spending your holidays trapped in the car together, driving down icy roads, stressed out, consider ways to travel less. The Holidays are a time to make memories. Oftentimes the memories we are making are of a stressed-out mom, running around missing out on all the fun because she’s trying to create a perfect moment. Instead, relax and experience the holidays with your family. Between a little planning and taking some of the pressure off, you’ll have a Holiday that would make Norman Rockwell sigh.

    Holiday scams and thieves exposed

The holidays bring joy and a sense of well-being for most people. With the numerous parties, activities, family get-togethers, and holiday shopping, you may find that you are very busy and may not pay attention to potential scams and rip-offs. Here are some tips that will keep you and your money safe during the holidays: Pickpocketing While shopping for the many gifts you intend to give this year, pay careful attention to the presence of pickpockets. Keep you money in a front pocket rather than in your back pocket. If you carry a purse, make sure you hold it close to your body rather than holding it by the strap and letting it swing as you walk. Crafty pickpockets who often work as a team steal millions of dollars each year. One will distract the victim while the other slips in and take the victim's money. Protect yourself and your wallet at all times. Do not be fooled into thinking that since you are shopping at an upscale, safe location that you will not become the victim of a pickpocket. Online Shopping Scams Beware of online scams. During the holidays there are many web sites that offer incredible deals on various merchandise, travel specials, and a number of other seemingly 'perfect' opportunities. Be very careful about what you purchase online and from whom you make purchases. If you are careless in your online shopping habits, you may find that your merchandise never arrives as promised, the deal you thought you were purchasing is non-existent, or that not only does your order arrive after the holidays are over, but when it does arrive the merchandise only vaguely resembles that pictured on the web site, if there is any similarity at all. Credit Card Companies Beware of credit card companies that increase your spending limit immediately before the holiday shopping season begins. Each purchase you make will accrue interest, increasing the overall amounts you will spend the items you buy. Also do not make the mistake of accepting offers from your credit card company to skip your payment until after the New Year. The interest you owe will still accrue and you will end up owing more than you did initially. Also, be very cautious about making online purchases during the holiday season. While most merchants are reputable, there are some that will put up a web site with the express intent of obtaining credit card and debit card numbers for fraudulent purposes. Telemarketing Scams Telemarketing scams seem to increase during the holidays. Never give your personal information or credit card number to an unsolicited caller. Millions are stolen each year during the holidays due to telemarketing scams that entice consumers to make purchases immediately. If a telemarketer tells you that the incredible offer they are giving you will only be available for the next 10 minutes, hang up immediately. You should also be very careful when making purchases from door-to-door salesmen. Not only could you have your personal information used in a fraudulent manner, you could risk your safety by allowing strangers into your home. Charity Scams Beware of mail and calls from charities that you have never heard of. Many people have fallen victim to a charity scam that solicits money form unsuspecting consumers. The charity promises that your tax-deductible gift will go to help the underprivileged, starving children, victims of natural disasters, etc. Most charities are reputable, but stay away from any charity solicitation that is from an organization you have never seen before. Wrapping Paper Station Scam Also, beware of wrapping paper station scams. Wrapping paper stations can seem like a great idea, but in reality you can purchase and wrap everything you need for significantly less money. However, if you do decide to use a wrapping paper station make sure you're present at all times while your gift is being wrapped. Do not leave your gifts at the station and come back later to pick them up. The time you may save is not worth the extra expense and you may find out later that the gifts you bought were not the gifts you paid to have wrapped.

Holiday shopping online delivery rules for your orders

Holiday shopping online has taken a lot of stress out the holiday season with one exception. What if your order doesn’t show up on time? Here are the delivery rules. Holiday Shopping – Prompt Delivery Rules The Internet is the fastest growing source of holiday gifts orders. The FTC, however, has received complaints in the past about gifts not being delivered on time. To stop this, the agency has set down rules for Internet retailers. The FTC has issues directives spelling out the ground rules for making promises about shipments, notifying consumers about unexpected delays, and refunding consumers' money. Enforced by the FTC, the Mail or Telephone Order Rule applies to orders placed by phone, fax or the Internet. Delivery Rules By law, an Internet retailer must have a reasonable basis for stating that a product can be shipped within a certain time. If their advertising doesn't clearly and prominently state the shipment period, they must have a reasonable basis for believing they can ship within 30 days. Most retailers, however, will promise much shorter times, even a few days if you agree to extra shipping costs. If a retailer runs into inventory problems and can't ship within the promised time, it must notify you of the delay. The retailer must also provide a revised shipment date and explain your right to cancel and get a full and prompt refund. There are no exceptions to this rule. Your Response For definite delays of up to 30 days, a retailer can treat a customer's silence as agreeing to the delay. But for longer or indefinite delays - and second and subsequent delays – a retailer must get the customer's written, electronic or verbal consent to the delay. If you tell the retailer to pound sand, they must promptly refund all of your money. FTC Takes Care of You The FTC takes a very aggressive stance towards retailers who fail to deliver orders on time. This is particularly true if a retailer blows it during the Christmas season. Millions of dollars in fines are handed out each year. Summary If you order gifts online, keep notes on when you ordered and expect delivery. Also, keep an eye out for emails from the retailer, particularly since they may end up in your spam box. If nothing comes from the retailer, get on the phone and find out what is going on. Taking these steps will keep the kinks out of your online holiday shopping experience. Rick Chapo is with nomadjournals - makers of writing journals. Writing journals are great Christmas gifts for him or her and are always shipped on time. holiday shopping online, prompt delivery rules, online retailers, internet shopping, shop online Holiday Journals – Preserve Your Holiday Experiences The holidays are a great time to gather the family. Alas, your holiday experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep a journal for your holidays. Holiday Writing Journals Take a minute to give some consideration to the holidays in 2004. What sticks out in your mind? Now think about what you did for the holidays in 1998. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about 1998. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you had kept a journal, this wouldn’t be the case. Keeping a journal each holiday season is a good way to build up a history of family gatherings. It also keeps you from losing hilarious and cherished moments to the passage of time. Each holiday season offers a chance to see how the lives of families and friends have changed. It is also a time to reflect on the things you have to be thankful for, such as a sister or brother you haven’t seen in years. Keeping a journal lets you take a snap shot in time of what you were thinking then. As time passes, your holiday journal will grow in detail. It will become a great keepsake by acting as a time line for the growth of your family. You’ll be able to look back at past years and read about the good and, perhaps, not so good times. You’ll be shocked how to realize how much everything has changed over time. As time continues to pass, you will inevitably lose loved ones as nature runs its course. I am not trying to be macabre, just realistic. Your journal will give you a detailed account of memories involving that person. Frankly, re-reading the good times can help get you through the tough ones. Eventually, you’ll have to come to a decision with your journal. Should you pass it on to one of your children to carry on the volume or just keep it as your private diary? Whatever your choice, you’ll be thankful you kept a record of the holiday seasons spent with your family.

Holidays that are loved by russian women

: Russian holidays are usually devided on national, state, professional and other holidays. The national celebrations, as a rule, have some special historical meaning. State holidays are dedicated to the events that have a social-political significance, and are held traditionally. Professional and other holidays usually are celebrated by separate categories of people. There are about nine official holidays in Russian Federation, but only three of them are really popular, widely celebrated and absolutely loved by the population. They are: the New Year, 8 March, and the holy Easter. Russian women wait and thoroughly prepare for each of these holidays, when they can give presents and receive gifts from all of the close people and friends. The New Year is the biggest and greatest holiday for the whole post-Soviet region. It's considered to be one of the most bright and festive holidays of the year. People start getting ready for the celebrations at the beginning of December, while in cities bright lights and fur-trees begin to appear, creating the Christmas atmosphere and good mood. It is a time for great joy for family and friends and for discounts in shops, but yet hardly anyone thinks about its history.

The New Year holiday appeared in the ancient period. Originally, it wasn't celebrated in December, and in different countries New Year was held in different times. But one thing all the states had in common was that almost everywhere the New Year began in spring, symbolizing the rebirth of nature. In Russia, from 10th to 15th century the New Year began on the 1st of March.

Only later, in 1699, Peter the First has proclaimed that the New Year would start on 1st of January. During this time, the Russian tradition of decorating fur-trees and wishing happiness and well-being began. Nevertheless, Peter the First said that the celebrations should be without alcohol and totally dedicated to children. The main reason for starting the new year in March was because that was how things have been done since creation. At the end of 15th century, the Orthodox Church designated the 1st of September as the new year and the last time when it was celebrated on this date was in 1698, although there still exist some places, where according to the Orthodox Church, the 1st of September is the beginning of the new year, and the 1st of January is just a civil holiday.

Peter the First’s goal in changing the date of the new year to the 1st of January was to align the Russian calendar with those of the countries in Europe. Right after the original New Year there comes another celebration for the CIS people, called the Old New Year, which takes place on night from 13th to 14th of January. Even here, in CIS, many people don’t know the real reason why they still celebrate the Old New Year. They just do it because of the tradition and because there is a common belief that on this day you’ve got to say good bye to the year that has passed, and try to remember your lucks in unlucks, preparing to live the new year that you already welcomed in the best way you can. However, the real reason why people celebrate it is because very long ago, the Orthodox Church has refused to accept the new style calendar based on Julian calendar.

Another holiday celebrated in Russia, Ukraine and all the neighbouring CIS countries is March 8th. It’s an important holiday because it is dedicated to ladies! On the Former Soviet Union territory the 8th of March is considered to be an International Women’s Day. Here, people devote this holiday to the whole female population of the world. Annually, this bright date involves everyone and keeps everybody busy in the country of Russia! On this day the Russian brides feel themselves as the queens, accepting greetings and gifts from their fathers, brothers, nephews, boyfriends and husbands. And all the men are also very happy on this day, because it’s a real chance for them to show all their care and love to ladies.

Historically, this holiday is a day of women’s solidarity in the battle for economic, social and political equal rights. The decision on annual celebration of International Women’s day in every country of the world was accepted in 1910 on the International conference of female socialists in Copenhagen. First of all, it was provided in the row of European countries in 1911 and then, in 1913 in Russia. Nevertheless, the tradition of celebrating this event was only kept in the Soviet Union and still is widely celebrated in this area. On the 8th of March guys give flowers to all the women they know.

What kind of presents they usually make depends on how much close the woman is for them. Traditionally, they give tulips for ladies, so as it symbolizes the beginning of spring, something new and vivid. When talking about their sweethearts, men try to be as much generous as possible, because every lady wants to feel herself very special on this day that is especially dedicated to her. Another warm, bright and joyful holiday celebrated here is the Easter. This lovely and delightful holiday of the ancient religious tradition is usually held in April or May. Everybody colour eggs, bake Easter cakes and congratulate each other at this time, saying: “Christ has arisen!”. On Easter people usually visit their relatives, friends, neighbours and treat one another with beautifully painted eggs, lush baking and pastry.

An interesting “holiday fact” has been recently published by a local organization called “Freedom Foundation”. The most popular holiday in Ukraine is the New Year - 92) as by women (64, then goes Orthodox Christmas (held on the 7th of January ) – 58. Other holidays that are also really loved here, came from the European culture – they are the Saint Valentine’s Day and Halloween. Those two are considered to be as fashionable and widely spread among the younger generations, so as entered this culture not so long ago.

Homemade halloween costume ideas for children

You can find a large variety of Halloween costumes available at stores in your neighborhood. However, when you consider the cost and lack of originality, homemade costumes are a more fun and oftentimes more cost-effective option. Plus, if you involve your children in creating the homemade costumes, the results will be worth more than any store-bought costume in any store. Here are some inexpensive, homemade Halloween costume ideas that will cost little money and show lots of imagination. Scarecrow: An over-sized flannel shirt, some straw, and faded jeans with patches will make a great scarecrow. Stuff the jeans and shirt with plastic grocery bags and leave a little straw hanging out of the shirt and jeans. A little makeup will complete your scarecrow costume. Ghost: Ghosts are an old stand-by that never goes out of style. Use an old white sheet with holes cut for the eyes and sew a simple treat bag out of a scrap of material or a worn out pillow case. You can dress your ghost up a bit by making lips out of red lipstick and a few false eyelashes. Or you could color a beard and moustache with markers. You may want to create a colorful ghost by using a sheet covered with polka dots or one that is brightly colored. Clown: You can create a great clown with sweat clothes that are a bit to large decorated with fabric paint or markers. Sew on some pom poms, use an inexpensive wig with a large, colorful hat, and you could even stuff the clothing with tissue (although the tissue will be a problem if the need for a restroom break arises). Hippy: You can become a hippy from the 1960s with a tie-dye shirt and faded jeans with holes in the kneesbine this with a headband, a ponytail wig, and a jacket or vest covered in fringe and you will have the most authentic looking hippy costume of all time. Nerd: Halloween is the time to dress like something completely out of character. You can dress your child as a typical nerd, complete with white shirt, pocket protectors, pants that are too short, horn-rimmed glasses, while socks and black dress shoes. Don't forget to tape one corner of the glasses for a true nerd appearance. Make sure you use plenty of hair gel to slick back the hair and a few overly large fake teeth will be a great addition. Soda Can: Find an inexpensive plastic barrel and cut a hole in the bottom. Paint the entire barrel the colors and design of your favorite brand of soda in a can. With holes for arms and your head, a simple barrel can transform your child into a soda can. Your child can be the hit of your block or at the neighborhood Halloween party if you use a little imagination and create special homemade costumes out of inexpensive, household items. Like the commercials say "The memory of your child in a costume you made together"... priceless.

    Hosting a holiday party

Holidays are a wonderful time to gather with family and friends to share love and stories. The end of the year is a great time to catch up and share good spirits for the new year ahead. In fact, any time of year is a good excuse to get together with friends and family. If you are choosing to host a holiday party, there are many things to consider. One of the first things to consider when hosting a holiday party is whether it will be formal, semi-formal or casual. This will affect everything from the invitations, the decorations, to the food. If you choose to host a formal event, the invitations should reflect this with dramatic colors and elegant elements such as ribbon or sparkling designs. For a semi-formal or casual event, choose an invitation that reflects the holiday being celebrated and uses more casual colors and design elements. Depending on the holiday being celebrated there are a number of holiday party invitations that can be chosen. For winter holiday parties such as Christmas or Hanukkah, choose a holiday party invitation that best suits the mood and theme of the holiday party. There are a great number of invitations whether it is a summer time 4th of July party, or a fall Halloween party. When and who to invite. Invitations should be sent to everyone invited to the party. Invitations should typically be sent out two weeks in advanced, or further in advanced for a very formal gathering. It is a very good idea to send out an RSVP with invitations for planning seating and food for the party. Throwing a holiday party can be very fun. Holidays are a great time for friends and family to get together and relish in the festive time. Choosing a perfect holiday party invitation will help form the theme and the mood of the event and provide all guests with a truly entertaining party.

How every woman can celebrate mother s day

Copyright 2006 Mary Foley Recently I read something in the book “Uppity Women of Ancient Times” that made me pause: “Slowly, very slowly, women became individuals, people whose consent mattered.” So, the wise women of old are telling me that before others will take me seriously, I’ve got to be my own person, someone who takes herself seriously. When I value myself as a Bodacious Woman, others notice and value me back. (The “slowly, very slowly” part is killin’ me, though. I gotta speed this puppy up!) It turns out that thousands of years later this same “I value myself first and then others value me” gave birth to our modern day Mother’s Day in the United States. It all started with Anna Jarvis who thought her individual ideas and actions were valuable and should be recognized. Better known as “Mother Jarvis”, Anna organized women’s brigades to help injured men during the American Civil War, not matter what side they were on. She continued to be active in the community, including helping resolve post-war conflicts between opposed neighbors. She took her nurturing “mothering job” seriously and demonstrated her belief that mothering went beyond child rearing. Then, in 1878, Mother Jarvis’s daughter heard her comment during a Sunday school lesson, “I hope and pray that someone, somewhere will found a memorial mother’s day. There are days for men but none for women.” A few years later her daughter, also named Anna, petitioned current and past Presidents, along with other prominent men, to do just that. In 1907 the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in Grafton, WV and Philadelphia, PA. By 1914 the national Mother’s Day holiday was born. Mother Jarvis’ dream had come true. What I love about this story is that Mother Jarvis fully embraced her individual worth in society and spurred other women to do the same. As more and more women believed and acted this way they became a “people whose consent mattered.” In this sense, Mother’s Day is a day for all women. What we think and do matters, as long as we believe it ourselves. So, on Mother’s Day let’s honor the women of ancient times, the women of our American history, and our own mothers who esteemed being female and contributed to women being “people whose consent mattered.” Let’s do our part by being women who value ourselves, cheer each other on, and make a difference. Now that’s bodacious!

How to decorate a christmas tree

This article is a crash course in how to decorate a christmas tree. Your first step is to choose either a natural or artificial tree. Keep in mind that a natural evergreen tree only comes in one color - green. Artificial trees however are now sold in practically every color of the rainbow. Just remember, whatever color you choose will become your canvas for adding more color in the form of garlands, tinsel and decorations. Your second step is deciding which color schemes go best with what color of tree. Green Christmas trees, both natural and artificial, look best with primary colors such as green, blue and red. White christmas trees look best with a red theme, pink theme, a gold theme or a silver theme or any combination of the above. Blue Christmas trees look best with gold or silver decorations. Red Christmas trees look great with green or pink decorations. The third step in this course about how to decorate a christmas tree is about lighting. If you are going to buy a natural tree you will need to buy a strand of bulbs or diodes. Traditional strands of christmas bulbs come in a variety of decorative shapes and sizes including the vintage egg shape, tiny twinkling lights and rope lights. However if you buy an artificial tree you may be able to get one that is prelit. The prettiest prelit christmas trees boast fiber optic needles that give the tree a glow of its own. Especially gorgeous are the white christmas trees that boast fiber optics at their tips. These trees remind many people of angel feathers. The fourth step is investigating the types of decorations that are available to you. The most basic is the garland. A garland is simply any kind of strand of objects that can be used to circle the tree. You can make a garland yourself out of cooked popcorn, holly berries or candy. You can also use a long length of ribbon and attach bows to it. Of course there are all types of garlands available commercially on the market. Most popular are the garlands made of furry bunches of white or gold tinsel. Red and green tinsel garlands can look especially nice on white christmas trees. If you are traditionally minded you might want to consider decorating your tree with glass christmas balls. These are either hand blown or created in a factory. Many of them are painted and decorated with glitter. You can buy these as globes, flutes, tubes and also in the shape of musical instruments, angels and other Christmas themes. However if you have small children, you might want to opt for the plastic versions of these decorative balls as they don't shatter if they fall off the tree. An important tip to remember when decorating trees with glass balls is to place the larger ornaments at the bottom of the tree and the smaller ones at the top. This helps keep the total effect of the tree in a pleasing proportion to the decorations. Of course, christmas decorations don't have to be expensive. You can make your own out of paper that is cut into the shape of snowflakes and other xmas themes. Candies (especially the candy cane), apples, oranges and cookies (especially gingerbread cookies) can also be used as xmas decorations. Red christmas trees look especially good decorated with white shortbread cookies decorated with glitter. White christmas trees look great decorated with home made presents made from tiny boxes wrapped in shiny foil. Another decoration to consider is tinsel. Strands of tinsel can be hung from the branches to simulate icicles. One tip when hanging tinsel is to hang it in clumps from the edges of the branches. Hanging single or just a couple of strands all over the tree makes it look messy. The fifth step when it comes to decorating a christmas tree is to choose some kind of tree toppermercially you can buy tree-toppers in just about every Christmas motif imaginable including angels, snowmen, teddy bears and of course, the Christmas star. You can buy christmas tree toppers that glow with fiber optic diodes that twirl, play tinkly music and blink on and off. However it is not hard to make your own christmas tree topper. Perhaps the simplest version is a cardboard star that is wrapped in tin foil. Sometimes the home made decorations and tree toppers have more sentimental value than the store bought ones. The sixth step in this crash course on how to decorate a christmas tree is to make sure you disguise the base of the tree with some kind of Christmas tree skirt. This is simply a mat that is draped around the base and on the floor. It can be made out of shiny or velvet fabric or you can buy commercially made ones that feature xmas motifs in stores and online. Some tree skirts can be quite ornate, decorated with sequins and embroidery. However their original function was to catch the candle drippings from candles on the tree and catch any dropping needles from natural christmas trees. Another interesting addition, especially if you are a Christian is to place a small nativity scene beneath the Christmas tree on the mat. You can buy Christmas nativity scenes made of wood, metal or plastic. Also popular is a toy train set that runs in a circle around the Christmas tree. A seventh and final consideration when it comes to how to decorate your christmas tree is a practice called flocking. Flocking is fluffy white stuff, kind of like silly string that is sprayed all over the tree to simulate snow. This gives just about any tree a real 50's or country style feel and it is very unique to tree decorating traditions in the United States and Canada. However it is not recommended for artificial white christmas trees as the effect would be a little bit of overkill.

How to find christmas decorations for your home

Christmas is a wonderful time for everyone, and decorating your house can enhance that joy, this can be something small like a table display or you could decorate your whole house inside and out. Christmas decorations have been around a lot longer than Christmas it’s self, as pagans were doing it for over two centuries. The Christmas Table. You can do a lot to your dinner table without spending too much money, get into the woods and find some fir cones, some gold spray paint along with some fake snow and you have a centre piece to grace any table on the special day and for a long time after. Tinsel with holly leaves and mistletoe makes a natural and cheap adornment and is a very old Celtic symbol of fertility. A Christmas Tree. Christmas trees have been brought into our houses for years, probably it was the Germans who started it, but now everyone has a tree for Christmas. A real tree is beautiful, but could make a mess of needles on your floor if it hasn’t been treated with chemicals. If you want a real tree get one with roots, you can keep it alive and then re-plant it in the new year and it shouldn’t make a mess, or get a fake tree, these can look realistic but you will not fool anyone, they are not real but will look beautiful every year when you pull it out of the cupboard. Originally candles were used to light Christmas trees, this proved very dangerous, so now electric lights that flash and play Christmas carols are a safer option. Some people go over the top with tree decorations, keep it simple, tinsel, balls, stars and of course a fairy or an angel on the top to finish it all off. Inside The House. Coloured paper, silver tinsel and fake snow around the house will bring a festive feel to your home, snow on the windows, holly above the doors and you must have mistletoe to get those Christmas kisses from your guests. House decorations, like your tree should be subtle, Christmas is a happy time of the year and a time to relax with the family in a calm joyous atmosphere. Outside The House. A wreath of holly on the door was all that people used to show at Christmas, now people have father Christmases climbing up their roofs, light shows and carols played from loudspeakers. Fake snow on all the windows is nice, but covering your house in it is probably going too far. So do what pleases you (and your neighbours), but have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

How to find the best christmas gifts for family and friends without losing your sanity

Depending on one’s perspective, choosing appropriate Christmas gifts can either be a joyful exercise or an avoid-it-until-the-last-possible-minute disaster. Kudos to those who handle buying Christmas gifts with ease: your finesse is to be applauded. For the more wretched shoppers who can use a bit of help, here are some tips to make finding great Christmas gifts a little bit easier: • Make a list – there’s no shame in writing down names and ideas before you hit the stores. Even Santa needs a list to keep track of Christmas gifts! It’s a good idea to shop for Christmas gifts for immediate family and close friends first. Once you have all the must-buy-for people stroked off your list, you can concentrate on others people like neighbors. Having a list will also help you avoid unintentionally buying two Christmas gifts for the same person, and if you’re working with a limited budget, seeing a written record of everyone you want to shop for gives you an opportunity to trim the list to a more manageable size. • Shop early – yes, shopping carts grow bigger and more difficult to handle and shoppers desperately combing store shelves for Christmas gifts get even crankier and more unruly as the big day approaches. Bypass the crowds by shopping earlier in the year. Whether you’re touring a summertime farmers’ market or just hanging out at the mall while the kids catch a movie, keep your eyes peeled for possible Christmas gifts you can buy early and have wrapped and ready to go before the first Christmas flyers hit your mailbox. If you’re really savvy, and you know someone who loves Christmas, take in the Christmas-themed merchandise sales in early January to find inexpensive ornaments, glassware and other goodies that make great Christmas gifts for those who sing Jingle Bells all year long. • Go online – the World Wide Web is a Mecca for shoppers of all types and you’re guaranteed to find super ideas for Christmas gifts for family and friends without ever having to leave your home! Better yet, if you’re a klutz with tape, many online retailers will wrap and ship Christmas gifts to either you or your intended recipient for very little money. The selection of goods that can be found online is incredible, so don’t be afraid to try something new when searching for Christmas gifts this year. • Budget – for a budget to be useful, you have to stick to it. Think about how much you want to spend on Christmas gifts before you shop, and don’t despair if you can’t afford a lot. Christmas gifts don’t have to be expensive to be appreciated. In fact, inexpensive handmade Christmas gifts are often the most cherished items under the tree. Consider crafting your own Christmas gifts: family photo scrapbooks, homemade mustards and gourmet salad dressings, or knitted scarves are all sure to be loved, and require only a little money and a bit of effort to create. Buying Christmas gifts doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little planning and thought, you, too, can have friends and family saying, “Oh, you shouldn’t have!” as they open their Christmas gifts on Christmas morning.
