Are you a mostly sane wahm too

I have a confession. I’m a mostly-sane WAHM. I’m far from the ‘got it together’ work at home mom that I’d like to be. I believe that there are a lot of women out there like me – clutching onto your sanity while juggling family, daily work requirements, basketball practice, ballet recitals, PTA meetings, and the many other responsibilities we carry on our shoulders. If you’ve been a WAHM for more than a minute, you know the predicament we face. We chose to work from home so we could spend more time with our children. This is great in theory. What happens, though is that we end up with no scheduled and defined work time, so it becomes a struggle to find time to spend with our kids. When you hear other people say “It must be so nice to work from home so you can spend time with your kids all day”, you roll on the floor laughing. If only it were so simple! Finding the balance between work and home can be a constant struggle especially when work IS home. I remember the days when I worked out of the home in an office job. I had two separate and distinct compartments in my life. There was the office, where I could work in peace and quiet, focus on projects and be productive. And, then there was home, where I was able to focus on my children and have fun. I had scheduled working hours, and also distinct family time. Now, I have the ‘hom-ffice’, an odd melding of home and office. The line between the two compartments is unclear. My office is now an extension of home. And, home is becoming an extension of my office. Because of this dilemma, I find that I’ve got the focus of a gnat. Here’s how my work day goes. I wake up, grab a cup of coffee, and sit in front of the computer to check my email. Fifty new messages. No problem. I get ready to tackle the first one. “Dear Nicole, I was wondering if you might be interested in” … “juice in a sippy cup, pretty please my pretty mommy?” Whoa!! Ok, brain switch! I turn and look at my little girl who just crawled out of bed. She is a perfect picture of childhood, with her big brown eyes, sweaty wildly curly hair and big grin. I hug this rosy-cheeked angel and go to the kitchen to get juice. Then, I sit back down and attempt to read my email “Dear Nicole, I was wondering if you might be interested in my new affiliate program selling” ... “the new Lego robot I built!” Brain switch again. I swivel my office chair and see my son, his blue eyes twinkling, and his face beaming proudly, holding up his Lego creation. I ‘ooh’ and ‘ahhh’ over the new Lego invention -- a robot that can climb walls. I rub his blonde head and tell him how wildly creative he is. He grins and goes back to Lego-building. I swivel back to work, and try to get as much done as I can between the many interruptions, karate practice, dinner and bedtime stories. Oftentimes, late at night, you can find me working, while watching late night TV shows. My husband comes in to check on me. I swivel my chair to get my good-night kiss and I tell him that I just want to wrap up a few last projects. I stagger to bed late at night only to start again, before the kids wake up in the morning. Are you seeing the pattern? Is there any wonder that I’m mostly-sane? Look at your own days and I’ll bet they are very similar to mine. Despite the frazzled hours and days, and all the distractions, I love being a WAHM. The honest truth is that I wouldn’t trade my job for any corporate job in America. However, as I meet more and more work at home moms, it’s becoming apparent that I’m not alone in my struggles. Other moms are setting expectations that are just not matching reality. What can we do about it? 1. Reclaim your office: If you have one room that you can dedicate to your work, stake your claim on it. Clear out all toys and non-work items. Make your “hom-ffice” a real office. No more messing around with half a commitment to your business. Your office is your turf. Protect it. 2. Buy a timer: If your children are old enough to understand the concept of time, invest in a timer. It’s a life saver. The next time you need uninterrupted working time, tell the kids that you’re setting the timer for 20 minutes. If they give you 20 minutes of uninterrupted work time, then reward them with quality time with you. Play a board game together or go to the park. Set goals this month to reclaim your work area and your time, and you will take a step closer to being a happy, relaxed, and successful WAHM!

    Armchair olympian

I am not a die-hard sports enthusiast, but confess I enjoyed watching the winter Olympics held in Turino Italy. It was nice to watch something positive and motivational for a change and to delight in some truly amazing and generous acts. I find the wide variety of sports showcased fascinating, proving there is a lot one can do in cold climates of winter! Consider the spectrum of sports. There are the many varieties of skiing. The downhill event has skiers reaching speeds of 140 kilometres per hour (87 mph), you get speeding tickets for going that fast in a car! Imagine what it takes to be a ski jumper as you attempt to imitate flight and defy gravity the longest once you are airborne. Picture the freestyle skiers who twist and turn in the air so fast I don't know how the commentators can describe their incredible aerial feats. The cross-country skiers have tremendous endurance, and some stop to shoot rifles while trying to manage their beating hearts and gasping lungs. We were witness to a newer Olympic event that debuted in Nagano in 1998, snowboarding. I think the snowboarders had the most fun creating their lexicon when they speak of a McTwist, Fakie, Duckfoot, an Ollie or a Nollie! Didn't it just used to be Narly ... or was that suffer speak and I've just dated myself? There are those flashy speed skaters in their skin-tight outfits who fly around an oval ice surface at up to 60 kph (37 mph) battling G forces in the turns. The figure skaters entertained us with their dance routines and inspiring jumps. They also showed tremendous grit when Zhang Dan a Chinese pairs figure skater had a spectacular fall which made anyone watching cringe. To our disbelief, this 20 year old got up, completed the routine, and won the silver medal. Awesome. We can't forget the curlers. A sport many find strange, but appreciate the accuracy involved in curling your rock down a 44 meter (49 yard) ice surface and trying to hit a bulls eye with two sweepers helping control speed and direction of a heavy stone, while you opponent is attempting to block you or knock you on every throw. Lots of yelling and physics accompany this sport! Imagine four Newfoundlanders winning the gold - talk about a party when they get home! There is the luge where, depending on the event, one or two people lie on their backs on a sled going down a tight twisty run ... feet first. You might think that is scary enough until you see those in the skeleton event, maybe appropriately named. These athletes go down a steep ice track, on a sled, that has no brakes, headfirst. Hmmm ... where do they find people to do this? Then there is ice hockey. Grown men and women strap on boots with blades on the bottom, use curved sticks to shoot a hard rubber disk in the opponents net. This happens as they skate at up to 50 km per hour (30 mph) and shoot the puck at over 150 kph (95 mph) while maneuvering around on ice. A shame both the NHL laden U. S.A and Canadian teams didn't even make it to the semi-finals. Perhaps too much talent, not enough "team". Over the 17-day period, 2,500 athletes from 85 nations competed for 84 medals in seven sports. We shared the pride of those on the podium as they smiled or cried as their national anthem played before the world. Two single acts at this twentieth Olympic Games stand out in my mind and will for many years. I applaud gold medalist Joey Cheek, the USA speed skater for donating his $25,000 bonus to Right to Play, an organization of former Olympic, Paralympic and professional athletes worldwide who support using sport for development, health and peace. Good for you Joey, you are an inspiration to many. Perhaps the defining moment of the Games was when Sara Renner, a Canadian broke her ski pole in a cross-country team sprint event. A Norwegian coach gave her a pole to finish the race. She and teammate Beckie Scott went on to win the silver medal. To me this unselfish act defines sportsmanship and is hard evidence the true Olympic spirit lives on. See you in Vancouver in 2010.

    Aromatherapy candles set the mood

Aromatherapy candles are in constant use to help set the atmosphere and improve the ambience in many situations. They can be used in any room of your home and provide a wonderful enhancement. Our sense of smell has been documented to directly affect our emotions. Part of our nervous system that helps to control our emotions is connected to our nose. Thus, the proof that using aromatherapy candles will have an effect on our mindset and our emotions. The key is in choosing the correct scent to match the emotion or sense you wish to evoke. When it comes to aromatherapy there are many ways to get the most out of the aroma, but one of the most popular ways is through dispersing it into the air with candles. Aromatherapy candles aren’t all the same, they can be made in a variety of ways, with different ingredients. You can also burn them in different ways. Which kinds are better for you? Since paraffin wax candles are said to pollute the air with soot I would advise against it for health reasons. Don’t be discouraged, there are many other types of aromatherapy candles available. Candles can be made with beeswax, soybean wax, vegetable oil or even pure essential oil candles are available. All of these are great choices. They are environmentally friendly because they are derived from natural plant sources. Along with these ingredients, they are also available in different styles, sizes, and scents. The only way to get the scent in the air is by burning the candles, and you have different ways to burn your candles. One of the more popular ways is to use an oil burner, or the tiered bowl with tea lights, although more expensive, they make great diffusers. Did you know that the way you burn your candle can effect the life and how evenly the candle will burn? Here are a few basic tips to consider before lighting up for your aromatherapy session: Wick trimming ј” from top of wax will increase the life of the candle. Another trick to longer life is to refrigerate wrapped candles before use. Last tip but not the least, the first time you burn the candle let it burn for at least an hour before extinguishing. This is what I call conditioning the candle and will help with the way the candle burns. This first burning extends the life of your aromatherapy candle. Take some time to care for them and they will last a very long time. Hopefully you are well on your way to that moment of relaxation you’ve been longing for. Light some aromatherapy candles and sit to read a book or take a long hot bath by candlelight. Unwind, loosen up and start taking some time for yourself. Start enjoying your newly found serenity…. you deserve it.

Art theft most famous cases in history

Art theft is an ancient and complicated crime. When you look at the some of the most famous cases of art thefts in history, you see thoroughly planned operations that involve art dealers, art fakers, mobsters, ransoms, and millions of dollars. Here you can read about some of the most famous cases of art theft in the history. The First Theft: The first documented case of art theft was in 1473, when two panels of altarpiece of the Last Judgment by the Dutch painter Hans Memling were stolen. While the triptych was being transported by ship from the Netherlands to Florence, the ship was attacked by pirates who took it to the Gdansk cathedral in Poland. Nowadays, the piece is shown at the National Museum in Gdansk where it was recently moved from the Basilica of the Assumption. The Most Famous Theft: The most famous story of art theft involves one of the most famous paintings in the world and one of the most famous artists in history as a suspect. In the night of August 21, 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen out of the Louver. Soon after, Pablo Picasso was arrested and questioned by the police, but was released quickly. It took about two years until the mystery was solved by the Parisian police. It turned out that the 30Ч21 inch painting was taken by one of the museum employees by the name of Vincenzo Peruggia, who simply carried it hidden under his coat. Nevertheless, Peruggia did not work alone. The crime was carefully conducted by a notorious con man, Eduardo de Valfierno, who was sent by an art faker who intended to make copies and sell them as if they were the original painting. While Yves Chaudron, the art faker, was busy creating copies for the famous masterpiece, Mona Lisa was still hidden at Peruggias apartment. After two years in which Peruggia did not hear from Chaudron, he tried to make the best out of his stolen good. Eventually, Peruggia was caught by the police while trying to sell the painting to an art dealer from Florence, Italy. The Mona Lisa was returned to the Louver in 1913. The Biggest Theft in the USA: The biggest art theft in United States took place at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. On the night of March 18, 1990, a group of thieves wearing police uniforms broke into the museum and took thirteen paintings whose collective value was estimated at around 300 million dollars. The thieves took two paintings and one print by Rembrandt, and works of Vermeer, Manet, Degas, Govaert Flinck, as well as a French and a Chinese artifact. As of yet, none of the paintings have been found and the case is still unsolved. According to recent rumors, the FBI are investigating the possibility that the Boston Mob along with French art dealers are connected to the crime. The Scream: The painting by Edvard Munchs, The Scream, is probably the most sought after painting by art thieves in history. It has been stolen twice and was only recently recovered. In 1994, during the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, The Scream was stolen from an Oslo gallery by two thieves who broke through an open window, set off the alarm and left a note saying: thanks for the poor security. Three months later, the holders of the painting approached the Norwegian Government with an offer: 1 million dollars ransom for Edvard Munchs The Scream. The Government turned down the offer, but the Norwegian police collaborated with the British Police and the Getty Museum to organize a sting operation that brought back the painting to where it belongs. Ten years later, The Scream was stolen again from the Munch Museum. This time, the robbers used a gun and took another of Munchs painting with them. While Museum officials waiting for the thieves to request ransom money, rumors claimed that both paintings were burned to conceal evidence. Eventually, the Norwegian police discovered the two paintings on August 31, 2006 but the facts on how they were recovered are not known yet.

The most common mistake made by people who attempt to put together their first resume is that they put in too much information. They want to describe everything that they have ever done from the moment of conception to the present. The resume ends up being too long, and nobody will read it. The most important piece of information that you should retain is that your resume, no matter how well it is put together, will only get a 15 to 30 second review by the person who does the initial screening. That person is normally someone in Human Resources whose job is to look at hundreds of resumes per day. You must create your resume in such a way that it gives all the information they need in a maximum of 30 seconds. There is information that, under most circumstances, should not be in a resume. This includes: • Your age or date of birth • Religious or political affiliations • Reasons why you left your last job • Your Social Security Number • Health restrictions or physical limitations • Any sentence that has "do not," "cannot," or "unable" Age or Date of Birth I repeat, you should not put your age or date of birth in a resume. In the US, an employer has no legal right to know your age. An employer can ask you only if you are over the age of 18 for insurance liability reasons or if local, state, or federal law requires that employees be over a certain age. Therefore, if you’re concerned that your age will be a factor, don't list the date you graduated from high school or the years that you received any of your degrees. I received my undergraduate degree in 1962. Can any of you guess my age? Religious Affiliations or Political Affiliations It’s generally recommended that you stay away from listing a particular type of religion or political party affiliation. However, being active in your community or church can sometimes be a positive factor in many large companies, so you should make general statements about your participation in activities that support the community. Volunteer work for a charity group would be a positive example but active support for an environmental group could raise some eyebrows. Reasons for Leaving Previous Jobs We’ve become a mobile society and longevity in a position is now considered two years. People accept new jobs for many reasons. If you left your last job because of differences with your supervisor or company philosophy, I don't recommend that you put that information in your resume. The reader will probably get a negative impression of you. If you couldn't get along with your last company, you probably won't get along here. If the job application asks you to give reasons for leaving your last job, a safe and truthful answer could be that you were offered a better position. “Better” could mean a pay raise, better working hours, better office environment, or newer equipment. Your Social Security Number (SSN) The exceptions to this are federal resumes sent for civil service positions. A prospective employer can ask for your Social Security Number in an application - that is normally a requirement for employment. However, putting your SSN on a resume could lead to disaster. You’ll be sending out many resumes; you won’t know who’ll be reading them. It doesn't cost much money to put a small want ad in the newspaper or on an Internet employment site, and a dishonest person can run a fraudulent ad. If someone knows your SSN, he can apply for credit cards or other important documents, such as duplicate SSN cards, with the information you normally provide on a resume. Be alert if someone other than in the civil service asks for your SSN. Information about Health and Disabilities The Americans with Disabilities Act has changed the way businesses in the US recruit and hire an employee. Generally, an employer has no legal right to know your health status. The only health-related questions that an employer can ask are job related. If the job description requires that you lift 50 lbs, the employer has the legal and legitimate right to ask in the interview if you can do this. He can also state the requirement in his ad. He cannot ask you if you have back problems, diabetes, or have had a heart attack unless the job, such as airline pilot, requires perfect health. Find out your legal rights if you live outside the US. Marital Status I’ve added marital status because this is another issue that can work against you, particularly if you’re a single parent. I know some people will disagree, but single parents have the highest absentee rate in the work force. Companies will try to avoid hiring a single parent if at all possible. However, in the US they cannot ask you your marital status or if you have children. Don't volunteer this information on the resume. If asked this question in an interview, the proper response could be, "Can you tell me what this has to do with the position I’m applying for?" That should end the questioning on this issue if the interviewer does not want to face a lawsuit.

Artists biographies on film top movies about visual artists

Visual artists biographies is a popular theme in the movie world. Moviemakers have always been fascinated by visual artists biographies, especially if it includes struggle with insanity, drug addiction or social conventions. In addition, it gives them an opportunity to depict original or resurrected artworks on the big screen. Here you can read about some of the most interesting movies about visual artists biographies. Lust for Life directed by Vincente Minnelli in 1952 Vincent Van Gogh biography had gained several cinematic adaptations. Lust for Life with Kirk Douglas as the struggling artist is one of the most notable. The movie is based on a best selling book by Irving Stone, who also authored The Agony and the Ecstasy about Michelangelo, which also had appeared on the silver screen. If you are a fan of Van Gogh artwork, you would enjoy watching Last for Life, which features almost 200 of Van Goghs original paintings. However, if you are familiar with Kirk Douglas previous filmographic, seeing him as a tortured Dutch painter might take a little adjustment. Another recommended film about Van Gogh is Robert Altmans Vincent and Theo from 1990. Surviving Picasso directed by James Ivory in 1996 Like Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso image made him an iconic figure outside the artistic circles. While Van Gogh symbolizes the self destructive, manic depressive artist who achieves success only after his death, Picasso represents the misanthropic and womanizer artist. Picasso infamous relationship with women is the focus of this Merchant and Ivory film. The story is told from the eyes of Picasso mistress Francoise Gilot and features only reproductions of Picasso works. With Anthony Hopkins talent and his physical resemblance to Picasso, Surviving Picasso manages to create an unflattering portrait of an artist as a cruel, self centered genius. Girl with Pearl Earring directed by Peter Webber in 2003 Comparing to Van Gogh and Picasso, Vermeers biography is less known and less controversial. Therefore Girl with Pearl Earring is much more restrained and delicate. The movie focuses on a short period in Vermeers life in which he was painting the portrait of his young low class maid. Although Girl with Pearl Earring does not avoid filmic conventions by over dramatizing Vermeers painting process, the movie is worth watching if only for its artistic design, which success in evoking Vermeers perception of light and color. Basquiat directed by Julian Schnabel in 1996 The most common critique against movies that deals with visual arts is the way they depict the creation process. Therefore, there were big expectations from Basquiat, which was directed by the celebrated painter Julian Schnabel. Schnabel did well in depicting Jean Michelle Basquiat rise and fall story in less the predictable manner we have seen millions time before. However, the only reason to watch Basquiat is David Bowie plays the role of Andy Warhol. Frida directed by Julie Taymor in 2002 Like most of the visual artists who had their life story appear on the silver screen, Frida Kahlo carried an unusual biography, which includes bus accident, problematic marriage, and an affair with Leon Trotsky. Like Van Gogh, Picasso and Jackson Pollock, who was the subject of a biopic from 2000, Frida Kahlo was an icon long before Frida was released, but the 123 minutes film did help to strength her position as a feminist idol and probably the most famous woman painter of the 20 century. Frida tries its best to integrate Frida Kahlo life story with her painting and the result is very colorful and pleasant, but still does not stay far enough from the conventions of depicting artists on film.

Authenticity of inuit eskimo art and native american art

Both Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art have gained international recognition as valuable art forms over the past few decades. However, the rising popularity of both Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art has resulted in the increased proliferation of imitations and mass-produced reproductions of original Native arts. Some obvious fakes are made in Asia from molds where the finished pieces are forms of plastic, resin or ceramic. Other fakes are actually made of cast stone simulating actual Inuit Eskimo art carvings and wood for imitation Native American carvings. These fakes, which are harder to distinguish from authentic artwork, are often hand carved reproductions of an original piece of artwork. Workshops have illegally reproduced hundreds of copies without the artisan’s permission. The counterfeiting companies would then attach some type of tag that claims the fake pieces were influenced by aboriginal artisans and even background information on the Native designs used in the artwork. Some even go as far as adding in Inuit syllabics on the bottom of the fake Inuit Eskimo art carvings. These are very deceptive tactics on their part since they give the consumers the impression that the imitations are authentic and income producing for the aboriginal communities. Fakes and imitations have lowered the image of authentic Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art. Sales of genuine aboriginal artwork have declined which in turn have deprived aboriginal artisans of income. The argument against these claims is that not every consumer can afford to buy authentic Inuit Eskimo art or Native American art so the souvenir level reproductions legitimately meet this part of the market. The imitations, which are usually low priced, enable students visiting Canada for example, to bring home a Canadian souvenir without breaking their travel budget. This claim would have more support from Native communities if aboriginal artisans were paid a fair royalty as income for each imitation and reproduction piece sold. However, this is seldom the case since most of the time, no royalties are paid at all. The obvious fakes can be spotted quite easily. An imitation of an Inuit Eskimo art carving spotted at a gift shop was not made of stone as it was not cold to the touch. It was very light in weight unlike a stone which has some mass to it. The detail and the bottom of the piece had the molded look to it. There was even a sticker on the bottom with the company name Wolf Originals. Side by side comparisons of similar pieces in the souvenir store revealed that they were all identical in every detail, which is impossible for original artwork. A black totem pole had a very flat uniform back and bottom again giving away the fact that it came from a mold. Other totem poles made from wood or mixed wood with a claim that they were hand painted were among many similar pieces in the store. All of these examples were each priced less than $20 Canadian which was another indicator that they were not original artwork. Imitations of Inuit Eskimo art sculptures were recently spotted for sale in shops located at major Canadian airports. From a distance, these Inuit Eskimo art sculptures of hunters, polar bears and Inuit women with children looked very authentic. However, each piece had several identical copies on the same shelf. To avoid accidentally buying a fake or imitation, it is suggested that consumers buy Inuit Eskimo art and Native American art from only reputable galleries and dealers rather than from tourist souvenir shops. A piece of original, authentic Inuit Eskimo art or Native American art is one of a kind. There should be no other identical pieces on the shelves. In addition, original Inuit Eskimo art carvings should come with an Igloo tag (or sticker) which is a Canadian government registered trademark. Inuit Eskimo art carvings that are certified by the Canadian government to be handmade by Inuit artisans, come with Igloo tags.

    Autism symptoms detect them early

Autism is a brain disorder that begins in early childhood, usually within the first three years of life and persists throughout adulthood. It affects crucial areas of development and exhibits following symptoms like: ·learning difficulties i. e. he lacks in ability to learn inductively from surrounding events, ·communication or speech problems, ·difficulty relating to people, marked by a lack of awareness of the feelings of others, indifferent to parents ·lack of social interaction, ·short attention span, ·not exhibiting creative or imaginative play, ·performing actions that are often repetitive and unchanging like twirling objects or rocking, ·reacting extremely to changes in the immediate environment. Autistic children appear to lack the ability to see things from another person's perspective, a behavior cited as exclusive to human beings above the age of five and possibly in some primates. Autistic traits continue into adulthood, but vary in severity. Some adults with autism do well, earning college degrees and living independently. Others never develop the skills of daily living, and may be incorrectly diagnosed with a variety of psychiatric illnesses. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder with an unknown origin. It is a bioneurological disorder and not a mental illness, which affects the functioning of the brain. Some theories suggest that it may be caused by genetics, viral and/or chemical exposure during pregnancy. Diagnosis is based on a list of psychiatric criteria as well as a series of standardized clinical tests are also used. Surprisingly some autistic individuals may be outstandingly good at some kinds of mental manipulations for example, arithmetical calculations, music, drawing etc. With intense therapy, practice and schooling, some children diagnosed with autism can improve their social and other skills to the point where they can fully participate in mainstream education and social events, but there are no indications that a cure from autism is possible with current technology or advances in medicine. Asperger's syndrome and developmental delay syndromes are two of the related categories of Autism. These syndromes exist because of brain circuitry problems. A key indicator to physicians making a proper assessment for autism would include looking for symptoms found in ‘sensory integration dysfunction’, where children will exhibit problems such as oversensitivity or under-reactivity to touch, movement, sights, or sounds; physical clumsiness; poor body awareness; a tendency to be easily distracted; impulsive physical or verbal behavior; an activity level that is unusually high or low; not unwinding or calming oneself; difficulty learning new movements; difficulty in making transitions from one situation to another. Autistic people may experience difficulty in hearing certain people’s voice while others’ are louder than usual.

Avoid junk telephone calls by preventing your number from being collected

When you call toll-free or pay-per-minute telephone numbers your telephone number is identified and recorded. Even when you call a business on their local telephone number, your phone number may be recorded. Often, your telephone number will be used for future sales calls from the company you called and will often be sold to other companies as well. Think you're okay because you have call ID blocking or because you registered your telephone number on the Do Not Call List? Think again. Call ID blocking only works with other residential phones. You cannot block your phone number when you call a business, toll-free number or pay-per-minute number. The process is called ANI or Automatic Number Identification. ANI is approved by the FCC, automatically passed through to businesses by telephone companies and is not affected by call ID blocking. There are no current regulations concerning the use of ANI and consequently, businesses which collect callers' telephone numbers are not required to inform callers that their phone number is being recorded. Since you called the business, you are now an existing business contact which gives the company the right to call you with their sales pitch, even though you have registered your telephone number on the Do Not Call List. The company may also sell your phone number to other companies. Not all companies use your information for future sales calls or sell your information to other companies. For instance, my company 1-800-HURT-911, Inc. regards this information as private and has never sold information to other companies when people hurt in an accident call 1-800-HURT-911. There are three ways that you can avoid having your telephone number used by companies for sales purposes. 1) When you call a business, toll-free number, or pay-per-minute number, tell the company that you do not want your information to be given out or sold to any other company. You can also tell them that you do not want the company to call you in the future if it is not related to your current question or concern. 2) Avoid calling any pay-per-minute number such as numbers in the 900 area code! Pay-per-minute numbers charge you a fee for calling them and are sure to collect, use and sell your phone number. Some examples of these types of numbers are lottery, horoscope, psychic, dating, and sex lines. 3) The best way to keep your number private and avoid unwanted calls is to use two telephone lines. Use one telephone line for calling businesses and for a fax if you have one. Use a second telephone line for friends and family. I have one telephone line which I never answer. I use this telephone line to make outgoing calls to businesses and toll-free numbers. When companies ask me for my telephone number, I give them the number I called them from. If you have a home-based business, give this number as both your business and home number. I also use this telephone number on forms and on the Internet. Never give out your personal number to anyone but friends and family. When companies call me back, they can leave a message on my voicemail which is then e-mailed to me. If I'm expecting a callback which is important to me, then I will answer the phone. I never call companies or toll-free numbers from my second telephone number which I use for personal use. This number is only given to friends and family. When using two telephone numbers, provided by your regular telephone company, it is important to have both numbers on one bill and to use the listed phone number for your business calls. The second phone number on your bill will not be listed. Never use a fax machine on your personal number. Many companies also collect fax numbers and you may get junk fax calls at all hours of the day and night.

Baby carriers choosing the right one for you and baby

Mothers from all cultures have been using baby carriers to tote around their loved one for centuries. The common baby carriers of the past were simple baby slings or wraps which are still being put to use today in modern society. Baby carriers of today are available in a variety of styles, colors, sizes, and made from various fabrics. Whatever type of baby carrier you choose, it is important to follow the weight recommendations of the manufacturer. Not all baby carriers are one size fits all, so if your baby is under the weight limit of the manufacturer, don't take the chance by using the wrong size carrier. You will also want to consider how the baby carrier will fit your body as well as your baby. The carrier needs to be comfortable for you meaning that it should not fit too loosely or too tightly. It helps to measure yourself from your should to your midsection so that you have a good idea of the size baby carrier to fit your body. Many baby supply shops will be happy to let you try on a carrier before buying, this way you can have a snug fit for you and your baby. It's a good idea to try on several carriers with your baby to see how easy it is to get your baby in and out as well as how easy it is to move about. Both mom and dad should be involved in the process as one carrier may not fit well for one parent as it does for another. You want to feel secure when carrying your baby in a baby carrier, sling, or wrap. Since you will not always have both hands on your baby as another security measure, you want to feel safe knowing the carrier is doing its job. Once you have chosen the right baby carrier, it is a good idea to get used to feeling yourself with your baby attached to you. Meaning, you will now be wider and you have to be aware of where you walk and try not to bump into objects. Also be aware of what you drink (hot beverages) and never cook while carrying your baby. It only takes a second to tip over a hot pan or for your baby to reach out and touch a hot stove. Although many baby carriers are made up of sturdy materials and fabrics, it is important to constantly check the wear and tear of your carrier. Keep an eye out for things such as stitching, buckles, ties, and straps. Make sure they are not worn which could lead to them coming undone. It also wouldn't hurt to read reviews of popular baby carriers to get a good idea of what other parents have dealt with. This will save you time when picking out a new baby carrier and you will narrow down your choices to the best quality available. There are plenty of baby forums that you can also ask questions about various carrier brands. Keeping these tips in mind will help you to select the best carrier for your little one. A baby carrier will be one of the most used baby items you will use when you are on the go. Have fun choosing the right one for you and your baby.

    Baby formula types and benefits

Bottle feeding your baby is a common decision for most moms. It is a decision that may be pondered over for long periods of time as you want to make the right choice as to why you want to bottle feed rather than breastfeed. If you decide to bottle feed, your next dilemma will be what kind of formula is best for your baby. The most common baby formula to use is the ready-made type. It is the most convenient as you can feed your baby its contents as soon as you open it. The downside is that you are paying for the convenience since ready-made formula is the most expensive type to buy. You can save money by using powdered formula. The great thing about powdered formula is that it is the easiest to store in its dry state as it doesn't require refrigeration. Once you have mixed it with water, it will need to be refrigerated. Your next decision is whether to choose formula made from cow's milk or soy. Formula from cow's milk is the most popular choice. However, if your baby is lactose intolerant this is not the right option. In the case of lactose intolerance, you can try soy based formula. Soy in general has received bad publicity and is still controversial when it comes to long term consumption. Goat's milk is also another option for lactose intolerant babies. It contains lower levels of lactose and may be a good option if you are concerned about soy's effects. If goat's milk or soy based formulas still don't appeal to you, there are also cow's milk formulas that are lactose free. Newer formulas now have DHA and ARA added to them. Both are found in breast milk and formulas containing them can be a plus for mother's who are concerned about baby formula benefits. Always consult with your pediatrician if you are unsure about which baby formula to give your baby. You can find out how each type may benefit or which ingredients may not be as important. Another major concern about bottle feeding is how to handle it while traveling out of town. You will have to take into consideration whether your destination will have a refrigerator, a way to plug in necessities like a bottle sterilizer, as well as a way to have boiled water if you use powdered formula. These types of concerns will become second nature once you get used to the routine of bottle feeding. One thing to also remember is that baby formula (particularly the ready-made type) can be rather expensive. Even if you choose to use powdered formula, traveling may require the need for keeping ready-made formula handy for times when you don't have access to boil water. You will need to keep a good supply of baby formula on hand at all times and this can put a huge dent into your budget. There are ways to save on formula by shopping for it in bulk or by using coupons for specific brands like Enfamil or Carnation.

Baby gates help to child proof your home

When it comes to child-proofing your home, one of the first things you will consider is the baby safety gate. Neglecting to add baby gates to your home can mean risking your baby's safety when wandering around the home. It only takes a second of distraction and your child could be in a dangerous situation. Many parents are multi-tasking during their day and it is impossible to keep an eye on your child's actions every minute of the day. This is why a baby gate is so critical in a home no matter what the size. A small apartment can be just as dangerous as a four bedroom home when it comes to a wandering toddler. The basic areas a baby gate is used for include blocking stairways and hallways. There are several types of baby gates to choose from. Now a days, manufacturers have made them easy to install and easy to open and close. This is important as most baby gates are blocking a high traffic area in which adults and older children must constantly use. Beware of old baby gates of the past that are made of flimsy material and have the accordion like open and close functionality. These types of old baby gates are not safe at all as a small child could get their head caught in between the slots. While these types of gates are no longer sold, you may still find them lying around at garage sales or passed down from family or friends. Newer model baby gates are much sturdier and open and close easily for adults to pass through. If you are using a baby gate in a high traffic area like a hall way, a flexible gate that is retractable is suitable for this type of area. You want to be sure that it isn't easily movable by your child (of course), yet not a hassle to open and close for older people in the household. The last thing you want is for older children and adults to be climbing over the gate as this can lead to injury if someone trips and falls. If you are using a gate to block your baby from stairs, a wall mounted version is a better choice. These models are screwed into the walls or banisters and typically open like a door. Because these models are screwed into the walls, it makes it especially difficult for a young child to manipulate the gate, yet easy for older kids and adults to unlock and walk through. Don't worry if the area you wish to mount the gate is not an exact fit as baby gate mounting kits are almost always available for hard to fit areas. It is not uncommon to have multiple baby gates mounted around the house. All stairs should have a baby gate and any doorways that lead to high risk areas of the home such as a pool area. While they may be an annoyance for some family members, it is better to be safe than sorry. Remember, baby safety gates are temporary solutions until your babies are old enough to wander without much supervision.
