What to expect from the home study process for domestic adoptions

Whether you are considering doing an agency or independent adoption, one of the first things that you will have to do is to work with an agency to complete a Home Study. The Home Study is comprised of information that you give to the agency in the form of questionnaires, interviews and forms. For many couples, this is the most nerve racking part of the whole adoption process. The first thing you should do is to choose an agency that you feel comfortable with. You have to share a lot of information during the Home Study process and you need to feel good about the agency that is getting all of this information. Most agencies will hopefully try to make you feel as comfortable as possible during the process. They are not there to judge you or to give you a pass or fail grade. They are there to help you become a family. They recognize that in many ways it is not fair that adoptive families have to go through the Home Study process to become parents when they would not have to have a Home Study if they weren't building their family through adoption. The purpose of the Adoption Home Study Process is two fold. As a legal document, it lets the court know that families have met certain state and federal guidelines surrounding adoptive families. It also lets Birthparents who are choosing adoption to know that their child will be with a loving family in a safe home and they will be well cared for. Typically in agency adoptions the written Home Study that contains identifying information is not shared with the Birthparents, but non-identifying information is shared if they have questions. Birthparents are given a copy of the Home Study in many independent adoptions. Although each state has its own specific guidelines surrounding the Home Study, most states agree on the same basic information to be included in the Home Study. This basic information includes a local and nationwide police background check (sometimes done by fingerprints, sometimes done by name and social security number), a child sexual abuse, child abuse and sexual offender registry background check, a physical including blood work, a TB test and a drug screen, reference letters from friends, family and other people and a financial form that basically needs to show that there is more money coming in that going out. There are forms or questionnaires that cover such subjects as parenting, marriage, views on adoption and your fertility process. You can expect to write a short autobiography and should receive a basic outline for the autobiography from your agency. You will have individual interviews and interviews conducted as a couple. At some point, the agency will conduct a home visit. During this visit you will need to have working fire alarms, a fire extinguisher and you will need to show that any fire arms you own are locked and secured so that no children can get to them. Although the Home Study is quite extensive, it takes a lot to not be approved as an adoptive family. Minor offenses that happened 20 years ago or traffic violations typically do not affect being approved as an adoptive family. Illnesses that are controlled by medication and are not terminal or minor mental health issues that are controlled by medication and counseling typically do not affect the Home Study process either. Terminal illnesses, current police records, being on the sexual offender registry or child abuse registry are all things that would more than likely keep you have having an approved Home Study. Not being honest during the Home Study process can have a negative affect on approval as well. If you have a police record and do not discuss it with your casework, it can cause more problems in the long run, even if it was just a minor incident. They will find any records, arrests, charges you have had when they do the background check even if the charges were dropped, so it is best to be up front about everything. Many agencies also have agency specific guidelines or items that they include in the Home Study. Some agencies might include information about your religion, even including a statement of faith. They might ask you about your views on disciplining and have a special section in the Home Study that discusses your discipline plans for your child. They might have you fill out a form that states what kind of placement you feel comfortable with including Birthparent medical and social background and activity during pregnancy, such as a Birthmother who smokes during her entire pregnancy or a Birthfather whose family has a history of Schizophrenia. Many agencies want a statement from you about openness and adoption and how you feel about continued contact with the Birthparents, sharing pictures and letters and talking you to your child about adoption. When doing an agency adoption, you may have to go through a Home Study group with other couples who are currently going through the adoption Home Study Process at the same time you are. The groups are like the educational part of the Home Study. They will include such topics as talking to your child about adoption, openness in adoption, meeting Birthparents, grief and loss surround infertility and how to put together a picture profile/resume to be shown to Birthparents. Sometimes Birthparents, adoptive parents and adult adoptees come and speak to the group about their adoption experiences so that you can get information from everyone's viewpoint. This is all the basic information that you can expect to be included in your Home Study process. You may find that the agency you use has a few additional things that they will have you do. You should feel comfortable asking your agency questions along the way and discussing what you need to have completed when they do the Home Visit, such as child proofing, fire extinguishers, etc. You need to remember that they are here to help you become a family, not to judge you or stamp you with a pass or fail grade. Work with your agency and be open and honest during the process. By doing these things, it will help your Home Study process to go smoothly and it will be easier on you in the end.

What to look for in bespoke mens shirts

Bespoke shirt tailoring is undergoing a surge of popularity in the UK as more men realise there are options beyond designer labels. Bespoke tailoring gives the opportunity to specify every aspect of how a shirt is cut, and allows the wearer to experience the feel and look of a perfectly fitted shirt. The following is a guide on what features you should expect from a quality bespoke made mens shirt. Obviously, the main benefit of a bespoke shirt is that it fits the wearer perfectly; after all, the shirt has been made specifically for the wearer. Signs that a shirt is fitted well are: * A bespoke mens shirt should not feel tight or appear baggy across the shoulders, chest, stomach, or seat. The cut of the shirt should follow the contours of the body, without being too close or restrictive a fit. A fabric allowance of about 6 inches on the chest body measurement, 5 inches on the stomach measurement, and 6 inches on the seat measurement should give good results with average body dimensions, although these allowances are variable depending on the wearer's build. * The sleeves of the shirt should be long enough so that the cuffs do not move up the arm when the arms are raised above the head. Similarly, they should not be so long that when the arms are hanging by the side of the body, there is a significant excess of fabric on the sleeves near to the cuffs. * The collar of the shirt should leave enough space to insert your thumb comfortably between the collar and the neck when buttoned, and should not feel tight or hang loose around the neck. * The length of the shirt should be long enough so that the tails hang just below the seat when worn. This will ensure that the shirt does not become untucked during use. * The cuffs of a bespoke mens shirt should be just too tight to slip over the hand when buttoned. It should be necessary to undo the cuffs when putting on the shirt. Aside from the fit of the shirt, there are a number of other important features to keep an eye out for: * Fabrics - A bespoke mens shirt should only ever be constructed from pure cotton fabric. Cotton affords the wearer far greater comfort than man made fibres, and give a classic Jermyn Street look and feel to a shirt. The count of the fabric should be as high as possible - the higher the count, the finer the fabric. Popular fabric weaves include poplin (a plain weave and the classic English shirting), twill (a heavier, diagonal weave), fils-a-fils (a tiny graph paper check that appears to be solid colour from a distance), and oxford (generally, the heaviest weave). * Collars - The collar should be hand made, and can be either fused or unfused. A well fused collar will give a smooth look with no puckering, and should use cotton interfacing materials. Collars should have removable bones to keep the shape of the wings perfectly straight when inserted. * Stitching - All stitching throughout the shirt should be single-needle stitching. This technique is more time-consuming than commercial methods, but gives strong seams that are significantly more pucker-resistant. * Pattern matching - When using striped or patterned fabrics, pattern matching should occur wherever possible. * Sleeve plackets - Where the sleeves meet the cuffs, traditional packets should be used. Highest quality shirts do not provide placket buttons as these are uneccessary in a well formed placket. * Split yoke - To ensure a perfect fit across the shoulders, a split (4 piece) yoke should be used. * Buttons - These should be cross-stitched onto the shirt by hand to ensure that they do not become loose over time. * Tails - The tails of the shirt should be rounded and strengthened by a gusset. Please visit curtisanddyer. co. uk for more information on mens shirts.

What to look for when buying a new oven

An oven is one of the most common kitchen appliance that is used in various forms of cooking, such as the following: Heating Baking Broiling Roasting Ovens are generally grouped into 2 common kinds: gas ovens and electric ovens. Then there are also microwave ovens (uses microwave radiation to cook or heat food) and convection ovens (uses a circulating fan to move hot air around the food inside the oven). With this range of choices, not to mention the variety of features and designs available in ovens, shopping for one can be a difficult task. Below are some guidelines that you need to consider - helpful hints that will help you buy the right oven. 1. The location. Whether 'freestanding' (set in a range) or 'built-in' in walls (known as wall ovens), make sure that you measure the size of the oven against the location where you plan to have it installed. The location should not only have enough space; it should also be sturdy enough to support the unit. 2. The capacity. The "actual" size of the oven is defined by its capacity. The oven capacity refers to the amount of food or the size of the container that it can hold. The 'size', therefore, that you need to consider when buying an oven is the size of its interior (the cavity). Note that some ovens seem large on the outside but are actually smaller inside. There are many things to consider when deciding on a particular oven capacity to buy. Some of them are the following: Family size: The amount of food you need to cook at one time (i. e., the oven capacity) depends on the number of people in your family. Below are some of the recommended oven capacity (in liters) for various family sizes (denoted by the number of members): 2 members - less than 29 liters 4 members - 20 to 29 liters 6 members - more than 30 liters Usage: The oven capacity should also depend on how you intend to use the oven. An oven that will be used for actual and all types of cooking will naturally require a higher capacity than that which shall be used as a mere supplement (such as defrosting or reheating food). Cookware: Make sure that the dishes (such as baking sheet, pan, and other cookware) that you regularly use will fit comfortably (and circulate freely) inside the oven. 3. The controls. The control panel is where you manage and control the functions and operations of your oven, which can be any of the following: Analog - mechanical switches that use knobs. Are less expensive but more durable; can also be less precise, since everything is set manually. Digital - electronically-controlled push buttons. The most common nowadays, they can be more expensive and less durable; but they have more accurate and precise settings, since everything is set automatically. Different ovens have various (and sometimes complicated) control panels, but all of them generally include these basic components: Clock or timer displays - properly sets the length of time for cooking Temperature settings - allows you to set the temperature for cooking. Thermostat - senses and maintains a set temperature to stop or further the flow of heat. This prevents an overcooked food and an overheated oven. Oven light - enables you to see the interior of the oven to check the status of the food the you are cooking. 4. Additional components. Some ovens may come with additional components, such as the following: Oven rack - allows you to place more than one dish in the oven at the same time; should be thick and durable. Rotisserie - a removable grill with a turning spit; for better and uniform grilling. 5. The add-on features. In addition to the basic functions, most ovens today are designed with additional (and advanced) features, some of which are as follows: Clear-view window - it enables you to watch the cooking process without having to open the door. Self-cleaning option - found at the control panel, pushing this button enables the oven to clean itself. Lockout feature - can be a button in the control panel or a door lock switch, it prevents misuse or unintended and accidental operations, especially when cleaning the control panel or when there are children in the house. 6. The price. Of course, everything is greatly affected by the price, so it is important for you to set the amount that you would like to spend. With these guidelines, you will surely be able to find the oven that is perfect for your money's worth.

What to look for when shopping for a personalized gift

Personalized gifts have always been a proven way to demonstrate that you are not only thinking of someone... but willing to invest some extra time in selecting something special and meaningful. Sometimes "thinking outside the box" can land you at the door of a web site or an eBay seller who has something unique and special to offer. (like myself for example) I would first encourage you to take a look at what they have to offer with an open mind. Don't limit yourself to the old list of standby gifts. If their product makes you smile or gets you thinking about your Aunt Ida.... or that neighbor of yours who moved away... you know the one you promised to keep in touch.... but haven't..... then you owe it to yourself to investigate things further. Sometimes the best gift is the unusual or completely unexpected one. Secondly, get to know their product..... understand exactly what it is that they are selling and what you have to do in order to purchase their item. Personalization requires precise communication in order to get your item done right! Third is feedback or testimonials .... If they have a web site, take a peek at their testimonials page. Now of course they aren't going to put something bad on there, but you can get a feel for why folks where happy with their purchase. If they sell on a site like eBay, LOOK AT THE FEEDBACK. Were their buyers thrilled with what they bought... or just satisfied? Feedback in the personalized gift world is usually blunt, to the point and an excellent gauge of how the recipient of your gift may react! The fourth thing to do is ask the seller a question... any question. In addition to getting an answer to any valid questions you may have, the real point here is to see how responsive they are. Many times (especially in my line of cartoons), communication is key and requires a few emails back and forth. Having someone who is quick to answer a question and available to address your concerns is very important in gift personalization. Finally I would remind you to not be afraid to try a new product. I have thousands of happy customers from many different parts of the world. I've not had one person ever come back to me and say that either they or the recipient wasn't pleased. Good Luck!!

What to put in a gift basket

Many stores sell pre-made gift baskets with a good selection of fresh produce or flowers, but they usually also sell the baskets, so you can make a gift basket yourself if you want to. But what would you put in your DIY gift basket? Here are a few ideas. One of the best things to put in a gift basket is fruit – it’s sweet, it’s not too expensive, it’s a treat (especially if you get exotic fruits), and it somehow feels like it belongs in a basket, especially a wooden one. You can even keep the fruit in the basket until you eat it, and it makes a nice ornamental alternative to a fruit bowl. For children, a basket full of pick ‘n’ mix sweets could be a real hit, especially if you know what their favourites are. This works especially well if you have quite a lot of children or you have relatives that do, as it can be a special present for all of them and they can share the sweets out between themselves. Flowers are another great thing to put in a gift basket, especially ones you’ve grown and picked yourself, or found in the wild – it’s much more personal that going to a florist, and often prettier too. Really, though, the best thing to do is to just find out what the person’s favourite thing is, and fill a giftbasket with that. If they’re a big fan of cheese, get a whole load of cheeses and fill a basket with them. If they like jam, do it with jam – and so on. This way the person will be flattered that it is a special basket just for them, and that you went to the time to put in that much thought and pick the things that went in it. And since it is a basketful of something they love, they are guaranteed to really enjoy their present.

What will you gift your father on father s day

: It becomes impossible to choose the perfect gift for the person you love most that is your father. Any father will be happy with even the smallest gift you give because it is their simplicity and love that makes them behave this way. But you can really give him a nice gift on the occasion of father’s day that he can enjoy by simply digging a little into a combination of interest, history, your relationship and his basic needs. You can make your father’s day memorable with a gift that he will treasure for lifetime and what more could be better than a father’s day gift basket? You can buy a gift basket or make one of your own keeping in mind his interests and likings. You can buy a basket easily available in the crafts store and then fill it with the gifts and decorate it with fillers so that when your father receives it, he gets immense pleasure. Now, analyze what your father likes to do in spare time for example if he is a book lover you can give him books based upon various topics like fiction and non fiction. If he has an interest in nature, traveling, computers, science or literature you can include books based on the related topics. IF he is a music lover you can choose from a wide variety of music CD’s ranging from pop, jazz, classical, movie songs or you can even go for CD’s that release stress or meditation. For movie lovers, you can collect a set of DVD’s or video CD’s of his favorite movies. If your father is a gadget lover you can gift him with latest gadgets such as mobile phones, ipods, electronic diary, calling cards, mobile phone covers etc. If your father is still working, you can either gift him an official leather bag or a designer pen. Some general gift items that you can include are photo frames, chocolates, dry fruits or a health guide if he is a sports lover. For fathers who are fashion conscious you can gift him an official neck tie or accessories such as watches, tie pins, sunglasses, wallet but always remember to present something that is more practical and he needs to make his life more pleasurable. What would you put in your gift basket

There are many occasions when a gift basket is a present that will be cherished and appreciated, even though it is not something people often think of. For many, the occasion that most brings to mind baskets is Easter. Easter baskets are generally full of eggs – either real hens’ eggs or chocolate eggs – and are sometimes accompanied by a bunch of Easter flowers. Taking your Easter eggs out from their cardboard packaging and putting them in a basket instead is a nice, traditional way to celebrate the Easter festival. Christmas is the other big time of year for baskets, and this time they are full of rich Christmas foods, such as Christmas pudding and cake. If you make or buy a Christmas basket, be careful not to overdo it – the food is so rich that if you fill the basket right up, you might not even manage to eat all the food before it expires! Harvest season is another big time for baskets, as they can be filled with fruit and veg that you’ve grown yourself and presented to your friends and neighbours as presents. It’s a fun way to make friends with the whole town. Anniversaries and birthdays can be nicely celebrated with more personal baskets, such as baskets full of wine or flowers. A florist will be able to choose nice flowers to put in a basket for you, and some wine comes pre-delivered in gift baskets anyway – you could even mix the two. Another thing to try is to package completely normal presents in baskets, just as you would with a gift box or wrapping paper. This way the recipient gets a basket as an extra present, and will be surprised that whatever’s in the basket isn’t what a basket usually contains – it could be a great surprise to take the DVD box-set your girlfriend’s been wanting and put it in a basket!

What you don t know can hurt you and them

Copyright 2006 Vivian Banta When my mother had a massive stroke, I remember arriving in the emergency room and being asked a dozen questions about her medical history. My father was out of it, in shock, I think, and although my mother had been taken to the hospital she gone to for almost 40 years, they were still asking the standard questions. What medications is she on? What are their names, dosages and frequencies? How long has she been taking this medication? What surgeries and illnesses has she had in the past and when? What types of medical conditions does she have? And I was clueless. Like many adult children, I had enquired after my aging parents' health in vague ways. And like so many parents of adult children, my parents always said, "Oh, we're fine. Don't worry about us, honey." If either of them had a medical procedure or illness, me and my siblings would hear about it after the fact. They didn't want to worry us. That strategy of keeping us in ignorant bliss didn't pay off. I know that my parents intended good and there were equal parts of me that thought "Well, they're my parents so they know best what to tell me and what to do" and "I don't know what I'd do if they said they were sick anyway and if I did, how would I convince them of what to do if they didn't want to do it?" The truth behind what truly prevented my parents and others out there like them from sharing this information with their children is two-fold. One, they just didn't want to deal with the fact that they were aging and didn't want to have to confront their own mortality. Two, they also didn't want to admit that they might not be able to handle situations on their own as they occurred. Loss of independence is a common fear for people as they get older. Unfortunately, these fears and their desire to not have me worry ended up hurting them and me in the long run. I wonder if I had known more about my mother's condition prior to the stroke whether or not it could have been prevented. I have come to believe that no matter how old or young you are, no matter if you are single or married, with children or without, perfectly healthy or managing an illness or injury---somebody other than you better know important information about you and where to access it in an emergency. Now, you're either on one side of this equation or perhaps you're even both ends of this situation. Your first task is to fully ensure your own well-being as much as possible. Make the appointment for that full medical exam, write that will, buy the insurance with long-term care options. Sit down with your significant others (don't just tell one person-what if they are in the same car accident you are?) and let them know where the information is and what your wishes are. You never know when the emergency will happen and when it does, you won't be able to tell anyone anything. The next thing you should do is check in with your parents and/or your adult children and go through the same stuff. If they don't want to include you in their plans, make sure that they share this information with someone they trust. Underline that their desire to decrease your concern is really just like burying one's head in the sand. It's the not knowing that is truly damaging in the end because you can't do anything if it's too late and if you don't have the right information. A lot of people put off doing things like this because they think fear the information. The reality is that information is power and keeping yourself ignorant only removes choices and your ability to respond.

What you need to know to move yourself

Moving yourself can be a great way to save money--millions of people move this way every year. While moving yourself is always hard work, a few tips from Budget Truck Rental can make it easier to safely pack and deliver your household possessions: • Think size. Before renting a truck, consider what size truck you will be needing. A 10-foot? A 16-foot? A 24-foot? A rental representative can help you estimate what size you will need based on how many cubic feet common household items need. For example, a queen-size bed takes approximately 55 cubic feet, while a freezer takes up approximately 45. Total it all up and you'll know how much space you'll need. • Moving big things? Tie bed frames together with tape or rope. Label pieces so they're easy to remember. Fill drawers with clothes or fragile but well-wrapped items. Cover with blankets or furniture pads and secure with rope. Remove the legs on a table, pad and tie together. Put nuts and bolts in a bag and tape under tabletop. If you're moving a washer, stuff towels in between the sides to prevent rotating and tape down moveable parts. Cover with blankets and tie. • Moving small things? Put your microwave, VCR, etc., into boxes and cushion with crumpled paper. Pack books flat in small cartons and alternate the bindings. Pack fragile items in bubble wrap and tape securely. Pack DVDs and CDs upright and cushion with newspaper. Never stack dishes flat. Wrap each piece in packing paper, then wrap bundles of five with more paper. Pack plates and saucers on edge. Wrap cups and bowls in paper, bundle together, then wrap again. Place around the plates and saucers. • What about awkward things? Wrap the arms and legs of a chair with bubble wrap. Leave slipcovers on or purchase chair bags for protection. Loosen the handlebars of bicycles and turn them sideways. Cover chains and pedals to keep grease off other items. Roll up rugs and secure with rope or tape. Empty gasoline from lawn mower tanks, check for oil leaks and disconnect spark plugs. • Remember to load large items into the truck first and put heavy boxes on the bottom. • Choose the day. It can be cheaper to move midweek (Sunday through Thursday), so check daily rates. • Get help if you need it. Some truck rental companies offer help packing and loading the truck.

What you should know about adoption

What is Adoption? Adoption occurs when a person takes full parental custody of a child that is not naturally theirs. The natural parent(s) give the adoptive parents full rights and responsibilities of the child(ren) and relinquishes all rights of their own. There are a variety of circumstances that may have occurred and the child was placed for adoption either privately or through an agency. A natural parent may wish to give their child a better life than what they feel they can provide them. The death of the natural parent(s) may also create the need for adoption either by family members or by an adoptive parent. Whatever the reason for the adoption, the adoptee becomes the legal child of the adoptive parents. There is no real difference between a child who lives with his or her biological parents or with adoptive parents. When adoption occurs the adoptive parents assumes all rights and responsibilities when it comes to the care and well-being of the child(ren) Why do people adopt? The reasons people choose adoption vary a great deal. Some people may choose to adopt because they cannot conceive a child of their own with either natural or medical methods. This is probably the most common reason that a couple chooses to adopt a child. Some older couples will seek adoption after their own natural children have left home because they loved raising children and want to help another child. Couples that are gay or lesbian also choose adoption because having their own child naturally is not a possibility, yet they long to have a child and raise them together in a loving environment. Another reason many people choose to adopt is out of the goodness of their own hearts. Many people who have children or have the ability to have children naturally still seek adoption because there is such a need for adoptive parents in the world. What are the different practices of adoption? There are three general categories of adoption, private adoption, public adoption and international adoption. Private adoption occurs when the natural parent decides to place their child up for adoption, however, they want the choice of who the adoptive parents are. Typically, the adoptive parents place an advertisement and the natural parent will respond. This type of adoption generally includes the adoptive parents taking care of all costs and possibly the medical costs associated with the birth of the child. A public adoption is performed through an agency. In general, older children and those with disabilities are placed with a public adoption agency. These children very often have some emotional, physical, or mental disorders that will need attention. An international adoption takes place outside of the country where the adoptive parents live. Many people are choosing this type of adoption more and more. While it is a little more expensive and requires a lot of extra work, the adoption of an international child is a loving choice. Many of these children do not have enough food to eat, medical attention or families for one reason or another. Wheelchair education 101 which one is right for you

Whether you plan on being in a wheelchair for just a short time or for the duration of your life, it is very important to pick the right one for you. With so many wheelchairs on the market today, it can be a tough task to undertake; but you can easily purchase the right wheelchair for you by becoming knowledgeable about your choices. Before you buy your new mode of transportation, it is best to have an understanding of the different types of wheelchairs. Manual wheelchairs are wheelchairs that need to be controlled by the person in the wheelchair, or by somebody pushing the wheelchair. There are a few different types of manual wheelchairs – lightweight or sports chairs that roll easily for those with upper body strength and are designed for every day use; standard manual wheelchairs that have the traditional cross brace frame and added support, child or youth wheelchairs that grow with a child and come in a variety of colors and styles; specialty chairs that are specifically designed for a variety of wheelchair lifestyles and needs and institutional wheelchairs that are the most affordable, but designed only for minimal wheelchair use – commonly used for transporting people in hospitals and nursing homes. They are most suitable for short-term use, for those who don’t use a wheelchair too often or for those who have upper body strength. Those who have limited movement or a weak upper body may need someone to push them, or may want to consider the electric wheelchair. Electric wheelchairs are wheelchairs powered by a motor. They were created especially for those individuals with limited or no body mobility, or for those who use wheelchairs as their primary source of getting around. They are pricier than manual wheelchairs, but the cost is definitely a wash when considering if your wheelchair needs are substantial. Electric wheelchairs come in a few styles – the traditional style electric wheelchair resembles a manual wheelchair with the exception of the motor, battery and controls; and the platform electric wheelchair look more like a seat placed on top of the motor encasement. The motor is often placed below the electric wheelchair in order to minimize any noise. The electric wheelchair controls are usually to the right or left of the arm rests, and can even be repositioned based on your wheelchair needs. People who enjoy outdoor activities regularly may need to be careful in an electric wheelchair – most models are designed for indoor use and can crack or become faulty over time. But, there are some indoor/outdoor models marketed today, and may be the outdoor enthusiast’s best electric wheelchair bet. Sports wheelchairs differ from the traditional manual wheelchair – they are very lightweight and designed to withstand the normal wear and tear that goes along with a number of sporting activities. Sports wheelchairs use lightweight metals that can withstand a beating like titanium, chrome, aluminum and steel tubing. The base of a sports wheelchair is wider than other traditional wheelchairs in order to support different sporting activities, and the center of gravity can be adjusted for the individual using the sports wheelchair. The sports wheelchair is generally affordable, but the more custom features it contains, the more expensive it will be.

    Wheelchair lifts opening new doors

If you or someone you love is in a wheelchair or has trouble walking, than it can be very hard to negotiate staircases of any kind. Often, your whole house is handicapped accessible with the exception of the most important part: the front steps. Wheelchair lifts are responsible for guaranteeing that millions of Americans maintain their freedom and independence and retain the ability to enter and exit their home. Wheelchair lifts are very similar to elevators and are often referred to as vertical platform lifts. The term vertical platform lift is actually a very fitting and descriptive name. Wheelchair lifts are in essence a platform that is raised vertically to allow people who cannot climb stairs, or those in wheelchairs, to easily go up and down the stairs. The lift travels the distance from the ground to the top of the stairs vertically at a slow and steady pace. Wheelchair lifts are capable of lifting over 500 pounds distances of 12 feet or more. 12 feet is actually pretty high for a normal home residence and usually lifts of this distance are found commercially in places such as schools and churches. Many commercial operations will purchase portable units that can be moved without disassembly. Whether you get a traditional wheelchair lift or one that is portable, it will quickly open up new doors. It can be very hard to not be able to leave your home, or to have to rely on someone to help you down the stairs. These units come with an easy and simple to use keypad, which can be operated by the person using the lift, or by a separate individual. Quality wheelchair lifts made by a reputable manufacturer will provide many years of service. These units are designed to be weather proof and are very rugged and well built, so they can withstand almost all types of weather conditions. The time is now, regain your independence.
