    Wood floors are great

Wood floors add to the beauty and sophistication of any house to a great extent. These floors have a different aura about them and can make even a really dull interior decoration look good. The floors are long lasting and can be maintained with very little strain on one’s pocket. The variety of wood floors allows people to pick and choose. The floors are of different types like the following: 1. Solid Parquet Floor 3/4” & less 2. Engineered Floor – Strip, Plank, Parquet 3. Solid Plank Floor 3/4”*3” and up 4. Solid Strip Floor – T & G up to ѕ” up to 3/4” These type of floors can be unfinished, prefinished, impregnated or multiply. Wood floors need to be installed in the rooms. According to personal choice, installations can be floated, glued, or nailed/stapled. Floated or glued installations can be laminated or engineered. But the nailed/stapled installation cannot be laminated. It can be engineered. Wood Floors are a lifetime and more importantly, one time investment. They enhance the value of the house, but definitely do not make the consumer go through recurring costs. These floors are easy to maintain. Just sweeping and cleaning with the specific products for this purpose is enough. Mopping with a damp broom or cloth should be avoided as water can harm the floor. Most wood floor manufacturers have specific cleaning products for the consumer. The entire house can have wood floors but it is always a good idea to leave the bathroom aside. Floors and walls create a basic feel about a room. For example, grey walls create a melancholy feel in a room, again pink or lemon or sea green walls gives a much more cheerful and positive feel. This is something intangible, difficult to explain with words. The the same goes for floors. Wood floors offer the consumers a great deal of variety in colour. Interior decoration will demand any pattern or colour, but generally red oak, natural, maple natural are very popular. It is better to remember that darker floors go well with traditional or formal interior decoration. Lighter colours are suitable for more casual rooms. Exotic wood floors like Brazilian Cherry, Brazilian Walnut, Santos Mahogany have gained acceptance. However the type of floor in the room will always be dictated by individual taste and needs. Hand painted Wood floors add something special to the room and have become very popular. It is possible to have the floors painted, stained, tinted to have the desired effect. Painted floors give an impression of being a designer one by using different techniques. Those who want wood floors in their house should keep some points in mind: What areas of the home will have the floors, which colours to choose and what kind of finish? But it is a good idea to have the advice from a wood floor professional. It will help the consumers from becoming too confused about the nitty-gritty of the thing.

    Wood flooring installation guide

Improving your household with hardwood flooring can be a disheartening job, I know I just put in my own hardwood floor. When I chose to finish my floors, I was overpowered with the thought of putting in the floor on my own. But in the real feeling of Diy, I did and here's just what I did so you don't have to be crippled the way I was. First Of All I had to choose the tone of wooden I wanted for my floors. There is also the breadth of each plank, the wood plank grain, and the border - how the wood plank goes with the next plank. Now all of these considerations come together to make either a courtly or casual area. The wider the plank, the more informal the feeling and the more tightly the wooden is separated the more elegant the area will look. Sloped edges also add the impression of elegance in a elegant area. After you've got that down, you want to settle on the type of wood plank for your floors. Oak and pine are the 2 most usual types of wooden flooring. You can't fail with either one. For something a little atypical you can try cherry hardwood flooring. The gloss deepens over time and use into a deep patina, in the proper house this result would be breathtaking. Another sought after type is bamboo wooden flooring. Bamboo is very sturdy and has a compressed grain which appears very symmetrical and even. Wooden flooring in hand, take it directly into your home and let it sit and climatize. This is crucial, permitting the wooden adapt to your house's moisture levels means a longer lasting installation. While this is taking place, put some kind of water guard on your floor; asphalt felt worked perfectly for me. Now you're ready to start the installation. Make sure to allow a 1/2 inch between your boards and the wall, this is for growth and will be buried by your baseboard. I almost always set out a few planks Prior To nailing. Start with your broadest and longest boards, you'll build out from these. Before nailing an adjacent row, rap the row with a rubber mallet to make sure it is good and tight with the adjacent row or you will have break in your wood plank floor. Another expert guideline is to keep the end joints in abutting rows at least SIX inches from one another. If you're using a flooring mallet be careful. The mallet will unquestionably help you put in your floor quicker but if you're not careful you can easily break up or even crush the wooden planks. If you do that you have to poke the nails out and junk the board. Also keep an eye on what you wear on your feet. I had drag marks all over my new wooden floor before I had even finished installing it because of the work boots I had on. Once you reach the end row, you need to use a pry bar to wedge the rows tightly together. Once nailed, you're finished! Brand new hardwood floors for you to love and to heighten the value of your household. Now you can get coordinated reducer strips for space doorways to make your wooden flooring blend effortlessly with the rest of your household.

Wood flooring everything you need to know

The elegant look of a hardwood floor can add warmth and character to any room in a home. The natural characteristics of wood add depth and a visual appearance that many other types of floors try to duplicate. With the demand for hardwood flooring growing manufacturer's are enhancing their ranges to meet this demand, with better quality finishes and superior construction techniques. Hardwood floors come in a wide variety of wood species, colours and widths. Besides the classic hardwoods (like red oak, white oak, maple and ash) many manufacturers now offer exotic hardwood species from all over the World. Exotic hardwoods give homeowners the chance to better express their own personal decorating tastes with a more unique looking floor. With so many different types of hardwood flooring now available it is sometime hard to choice which is best suited to you. Different Types of Wood Flooring Solid wooden floors are one solid piece of wood that have tongue and groove sides and come in either pre-finished or unfinished styles. Solid wood floors are sensitive to moisture and it is not recommended to install these floors below ground level, or directly over a concrete slab. These floors are for nail-down installations only. You can refinish, or recoat solid wood floors several times, which adds to their appeal and to their long life. There are solid floors that are over 100 years old and are still in good condition. All solid wood floors will react to the presence of moisture. In the winter heating months, moisture leaves the wood causing the floor to contract which leaves unsightly gaps between each plank. In the summer months when the humidity is higher the wood will expand and the gaps will disappear. If there is too much moisture it may cause the wood planks to cup, or buckle. This is why it is important when installing a solid strip floor to leave the proper expansion area around the perimeter and to acclimatize the wood prior to installation. Engineered wood floors - These floors are constructed from several wood plies that are glued together. The centre core is generally a softer wood material and is used to make the tongue and groove. A hardwood finish layer is glued on top of the centre core and another softer wood ply is attached underneath the core. This top ply is also called the finish layer and can be constructed of almost any wood specie. Wood always wants to expand in a certain direction. In the presence of moisture solid wood planks will always expand across the width of the planks, rather than down the length of the boards. To avoid this problem, manufacturers of engineered planks place each ply in the opposite direction of each other. This is called cross-ply construction. Once the wood layers are glued together the plies will counteract each other which will stop the plank from growing or shrinking with changes in the humidity. Engineered wood floors are designed for the floating installation and can be glued together or some now come with a click system. Veneer wood floors are very similar to laminate floors. The only difference is that with a veneer flooring to top wear layer is a thin piece or real hardwood instead of a photographic image as in laminates. Veneer flooring is usually around 8mm in thickness with the top hardwood layer being around 0.7mm. Advantages of a veneer floors are that they are fast and easy to install and you have a real hardwood floor. Factory Pre-finished Wood Flooring Most factory finished hardwood floors have several coats of finish applied to the wood's surface. As example, many wood floor companies are applying 6-10 coats of a ultra-violet (UV) cured urethane. This would be extremely difficult for someone to duplicate on a job site finish, not to mention how many days it would take. This is one of the reasons why many flooring mechanics, flooring retailers, and builders are pushing pre-finished hardwood floors. Instead of taking several days to install and finish a new hardwood floor a pre-finished hardwood floor is generally done in one day. The most common finishes are: UV-cured – Factory finishes that are cured with Ultra Violet lights versus heat. Polyurethane – A clear, tough and durable finish that is applied as a wear layer. Acrylic-urethane – A slightly different chemical make up than Polyurethane with the same benefits. Aluminium Oxide – Added to the urethane finish for increased abrasion resistance of the wear layer, which is becoming extremely popular on the better grade wood floors. Acrylic Impregnated – Acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure of the wood to give increased hardness and then finished with a wear layer over the wood. Unfinished Wood Flooring If you want a custom stained hardwood floor, or a wood floor to match existing trim than a unfinished hardwood floor is your answer. Unfinished means you start with a bare hardwood floor and than the floor is sanded, stained, and finished in the home. This can be quite a mess and the process does take several days, but your floor will have a finish to you requirements. Installation Options Nail Down – Secret nails are used with a wood flooring nailer and mallet to attach the flooring to the sub floor. Solid Strip floors or Plank floors can only be installed on wooden sub-floors or on batons. Glue Down – Engineered wood floors and parquets can be glued down. This is when you spread the recommended glue all over the sub floor and lay the flooring into the glue. Floating – This is when a thin underlay is placed between the wood flooring and the sub floor. A recommended wood glue is then applied in the tongue and groove of each plank to hold the planks together. Engineered & Veneer floors can be floated. This is a very fast, easy and clean method of installation. Please consult the manufacturer installation instructions before installing any flooring.

    Wood and bamboo gazebo

A gazebo is a wonderful solution for your garden and backyard hosting options, gazebos are used for a verity of different tasks today, but first and foremost a gazebo is a great place to have family and friends enjoy your garden or your backyard. In the recent years more and more people are discovering the gazebo, it is a structure that is placed in the garden or backyard and that is perfect for holding gardening tools and for spending nice afternoons at. The gazebo market has grown considerably over the last few years, offering an abundance of gazebos made of different materials. Two very unique gazebo materials are wood and bamboo gazebos, wood is considered to be the classic material for a gazebo, it blends in wonderfully with a garden, providing an all natural feeling and a nice flow, wood is the basic material used to construct the first gazebos years ago. A bamboo gazebo would add an Asian quality to your backyard, some even make it themselves, it is no simple task but it is definitely possible for a person to build his own bamboo gazebo in a few weekends. You will need to find the type and kind of bamboo you want and then you will need to make a plan for the gazebo. When thinking of a bamboo gazebo you probably think of an elevated structure that has a bamboo flooring a few inches above the ground, open from all sides and with a nice bamboo roof over it, some even add shades so they can close any off the four sides or even all if they wish. A wood gazebo is much more complicated, it will need serious construction and planning and an individual may not have enough knowledge and tools to build one of those, if you are in the market for a wood gazebo you should try and research as much as you can and have a clear idea of how you want the gazebo to look. The next thing would be to find gazebo plans or even gazebo pictures you can show an expert so that the end result will be as close as possible to what you had in mind. Wood gazebo price is something that can not be estimated, you need to decide on what kind of gazebo you want, and what wood you want to use, once you got that out of the way you will need to think about how much will you be willing to pay a professional to build this for you, and deliver it to your garden. A bamboo gazebo may be easier to get, but you should bare in mind that building one should be made by someone who understands the basics of bamboo building and that the place you are placing the gazebo will be suitable for this kind of gazebo, a bamboo gazebo placed on a beach is a great idea, but one placed on a mountain top may prove to be usable only a few days a year. Gazebos are a wonderful extra feature to your garden, they will also probably add some value to your property, so it is a wise investment, no matter what kind of gazebo you are looking for, I highly recommend researching the market on the internet before making any decisions.

    Wood burning stoves timeless classics

Traditionally, wood-burning freestanding stoves were used in ski cabins and lodges, but today thanks to new design concepts they have become a welcome addition to any home. Wood-burning stoves can be installed in any room of your house, but most often they are placed in living or dining rooms, as well as in patios. While traditional fireplaces generally work as a piece of dйcor, free-standing wood-burning stoves are generally used for more practical purposes, namely, for heating and even cooking. Thanks to new designs, your wood-burning stove will look attractive and still remain perfectly functional. Because it isn’t attached to the wall, a wood-burning stove will radiate more heat throughout a small or large room. Most often, wood-burning stoves are usually built of stainless steel, soapstone or ceramics study stone and brick but can remain sleek and contemporary thanks to new materials such as fireproof glass and stainless steel details. The shape of these stoves is most commonly tall and cylindrical, with built-in wood storage under the burning chamber. When choosing a new wood-burning stove, keep in mind that the size of your wood-burning stove is determined by the size of the space that needs to be heated. The fire of the stove should be substantial enough to please the eye as well as heat the room, but too much fire can literally turn your place into an oven. When picking a place to put your new stove, avoid traffic areas such as doors. A stove surrounded by windows may be a good solution. The fire chamber door should face the room. Don’t forget to take stovepipe requirements into the account, making sure they are in compliance with your local building codes. Since wood-burning stoves are not strictly fireplaces, they don’t require any clearance between the fire chamber and surrounding combustible materials, such as wood or fabric. Conventional wood-burning stoves vary in heat efficiency because their construction can be very different, too. The efficiency of a wood-burning stove depends on how much of its combustion energy turns to heat, which in its turn depends on how well it burns wood. Even the best wood-burning stoves don’t burn all wood completely. The smoke is actually composed of unburned wood particles. Another factor that impacts the wood-burning stove’s efficiency is how much heat escapes through the chimney. To improve the efficiency of your wood-burning stove, consider a chimney sweep in the first place. This should be done by a professional fireplace expert. If you noticed that a lot of smoke is produced during the wood burning, you may need to alter the size of your stove opening, or reconfigure the existing fire chamber. If you notice that a lot of hot air escapes through the chimney, you may consider replacing the fire basket – the metal rack that supports the burning logs. New designs of fire baskets can greatly improve air circulation and heat efficiency. Wood burning stoves today offer a great variety of looks and designs to suit any home style, from a retro Victorian house to a steel loft condo. Painted black, brushed steel or even red, with stovepipe to match, wood burning stoves with generous glass doors allow you admire the dancing flames during the cold winter season.

Women spring into home improvement projects

Warm-weather season is an ideal time to learn how to use power tools and start much-needed home improvement projects. It is becoming more common to hear that women are finishing DIY projects without calling a professional or waiting for their husbands. While DIY projects are not new, the amount of time women spend doing them is. With the onset of do-it-yourself television shows and magazines, more and more women feel confident in their abilities to handle home improvement projects themselves. In fact, many home improvement centers report a greater percentage of women purchasing power tools and supplies. And recent research shows that the two most popular power tool purchases by women are cordless drills and sanders. Generally speaking, women enjoy taking on DIY projects to enhance their current surroundings or prepare it for new uses. User-friendly tools and supplies, as well as knowledgeable resources dedicated to home improvement projects, can easily be found today. As a result, women find they are willing to take on DIY projects themselves. Not only are home improvement projects empowering, but oftentimes they are also necessary. As Heidi Baker and Eden Jarrin, the "Janes" of Be Jane, Inc., point out, they both took on projects in their own homes because they did not have the money to hire someone to do it for them. Increasingly, women are looking for more knowledge on power tools and DIY projects. For those who are not familiar with how power tools work, Skil Power Tools product manager Christelle Imhof suggests starting "with smaller, easier-to-handle tools and then work your way up. For instance, when looking for a cordless drill, start out with a 12V; once you're use to it, graduate to a more powerful tool." Mother's Day can be an ideal time to give a loved one a power tool that will not only increase her confidence, but also help her build those backyard planters she's wanted for years. Plenty of Web sites provide step-by-step instructions to get started.

    With water shall we clean

The bathroom is a place not too many people bother about. The assumption is that the commission of a necessity need not be attended with ceremony. Psychologists would have us believe that our consciousness with sin and dirt results in a certain tension that prevent us from bothering too much with bathroom issues. The theory further elaborates that such tension results in loss of speech, or indulgence in activities that give relief to tension – hence the tendency of many people to become bathroom singers or readers. Dylan Thomas famously said that novels should be serialized on toilet paper so that the toilet reader may acquire some literary credentials. The bathroom as a place where the eternal battle between dirt and cleanliness is fought, has always assumed a somewhat ambiguous position in our evolution. While the necessity of cleanliness and hygiene was acknowledged, there was certain awkwardness in the development of sensible techniques. Behind this awkwardness, at least in the Christian world, there might be the religious ambivalence with dirt. Christianity has at times upheld dirt in appearance if it covered a pure soul. Most of the prophets were begrimed and dirty as the objects of persecution. The upholding of poverty further championed laxity with cleanliness that was the necessary accompaniment of poverty. At the same time Christianity also said cleanliness is next to godliness, and inspired cleansing of society, from outside as well as inside. Lack of piped water, a cold temperature, a masochistic culture, distain of hygiene and other factors resulted in atrocious personal hygiene in earlier times. In Elizabethan England, nobles used to take a bath in dirty water once in a blue moon. To mask the stink many perfumes were used. Defecation and urination were done in pots which shared space with men throughout the night. Morning time ritual consisted of dumping of such pots out of the window, which resulted in the chivalrous custom of keeping women on the farther side from windows while taking a walk. The bidet was used for after-toilet ablution for a long time in Europe. The use of the toilet paper, especially in USA, resulted in a relapse of unhygienic ways, a custom that prevails to this day. In The Bathroom, Cornell Professor Alexander Kira sarcastically comments how men are “prepared to complain about a tomato sauce stain on a restaurant tablecloth whilst they luxuriate on a plush seat in their faecally-stained pants”. The use of water as a cleansing medium has no parallel, and since times ancient, water has been respected and revered as the agency of washing away dirt and sins – as much in Christianity, where baptism occurs with a dip, as in Hinduism where till today millions take holy dips in their numerous rivers. Since bathroom is the place where one takes a bath, or bathes, it behooves that the primacy of cleansing should be reserved for water only. Today, we are blessed with the knowledge the lack of which meant death and disability to our ancestors. The discovery of pathogens and the microbial world has brought about a paradigm change in our conception of the causes and effects of unhygienic lifestyles. The toilet is the epicenter of a hygienic life where we dispense with everything that is not required by us. It behooves us as civilized men that we discard what is meant for discarding in a way that is conducive to a better life. This requires proper use of proper bathroom materials, something that is easily done. The next time we think of cleaning ourselves, we should remember that there is water. We should not hesitate from getting our hands wet. And get it dry once we are done.

    Windows and killer utility bills

Does your utility bill leave you in tears? Does your family walk around wearing all their clothes so you can avoid cranking up the heater and wiping out your bank account? Those beautiful windows are killing you. Hate Paying Taxes? Do you hate paying taxes? Everyone does. At least you only have to do it once a year. If you don’t take steps to improve your energy use, however, you are paying the utility company an energy waster tax every month and every year. I bet you never thought of it that way before. Fortunately, you don’t need an accountant to eliminate this tax. To terminate your energy waster tax, you need to understand the areas where you are probably wasting energy. Here is the biggest offender. Windows are necessary items in a home. Can you imagine a home without them? Of course not. Still, that beautiful view to the world outside comes with a heavy price. Windows are the single biggest area where heating or cooling efforts are wasted. Because windows open and close, they almost always develop leaks where your hard earned money escapes in the form of heat transfer. If you do nothing else after reading this article, take a close look at your windows. Making them air tight could save you as much as forty percent on your utility bill. Even if your windows are not leaking, you still have a problem. As people living in cold climates can attest, most installed window are horrific burdens on heating efforts. These year around windows tend to be thin and are not designed for specific conditions. Put in simple terms, heat moves through them like beads at Mardi Gras. If you don’t believe me, go stand next to one of your windows on a winter day. It gets a bit chilly, eh? To overcome your inferior window problem, you have two options. The first is to install windows designed to hold in hot air during winter. This will save you a ton of money, but you have to change them twice a year, installation and removal. If your lazy like me, a second option is to go with Energy Star windows. Energy Star is a government program designed to encourage manufacturers to build better stuff for your home. If a product has an energy star sticker, it means it is going to save you cash on your utility bill. Since windows are problematic, the government has focused on them and you can now buy Energy Star windows at all home improvement stores. Note that I didn’t name an improvement store, but am willing to amend this article for a significant sponsorship fee! While I wait for Home Depot or Lowes to call, go take a look at your windows. If you concentrate really hard, you can see dollar bills floating through them.

Window treatments help homeowners save money

You might not think twice about how much energy you are conserving or wasting in your home - until you get your gas or electric bill. With energy prices continuing to skyrocket from year to year, and utility companies passing along the costs to their customers, many homeowners are starting to take a harder look at ways to protect their pocketbooks. A few simple steps now can go a long way toward reducing your energy costs and keeping them low for the foreseeable future. The following tips provided by Comfortex BlindCrafter Centers will help you conserve energy in your home and save money on your heating and cooling bills. * Install insulating window treatments like Comfortex Cellular Shades. These innovative window treatments trap air between the shade and window, which in turn keeps warm air from escaping through your windows during the winter, and keeps hot air from entering your home during the summer. * Caulk cracks and holes in your windows or install weather stripping to ensure that no cold or hot air escapes. * During the winter, allow those rare sunny days to warm your house by opening window shades and blinds, but remember to close them at night. * Install storm windows. According to the U. S. Department of Energy, storm windows can reduce heat loss through your windows by up to 50 percent. * Move furniture away from the heat source. Blocking a vent makes the system work harder. * Keep your fireplace damper closed when not in use.

    Window styles

Have you ever wondered what those funny windows you see on buildings were called? According to wikopedia, The definition of a window is "... an opening in an otherwise solid, opaque surface through which light and air can pass. " By definition, this includes the early windows which didn't have any protection from the wind or rain. Early windows used shutters to protect the inside of the house from the elements. Modern windows may have be single, dual, or triple paned. There are may different window styles, those more common today which are usually dictated by the weather conditions common to the area. Coastal climates, with stronger winds, tend to have smaller outward-opening windows while inland areas tend to have larger windows, with commonly open inwards. * Replacement: is a framed window designed to slip inside the original window frame from the inside after the old sashes are removed * New construction: a window with a nailing fin designed to be inserted into a rough opening from the outside before applying siding and inside trim. Common styles are: * Double-hung sash window: a Vertical style window with two parts (sashes) which overlap slightly and slide up and down inside the frame. * Single-hung sash window: one sash is movable and the other fixed. * Horizontal Sliding sash window: has two or more sashes that overlap slightly but slide horizontally within the frame. If there are 3 part, the center typically is a fixed panel. * Casement window: An outward-opening window with either side-hung, top-hung, or combination of sash types. Often they have fixed panels on one or more sides of the sash. These are opened using a crank, by friction stays, or espagnolette locking. * Tilt: a window which can open inwards at the top or can open hinged at the side. * Jalousie window: A window comprising many slats of glass that open and close like a Venetian blind usually using a crank. * Skylight: A flat, sloped, or bubble window built into a roof structure for daylighting. * Bay: A multipanel window, with at three sections set at different angles to create an expanded area for shelving/sitting while allowing more light into the room that a flat window. The window creates a "seat board", a small seating area or shelf often used for plants or items that would take up floor space. A bay window may be rectangular, polygonal or arc shaped. If arc-shaped it is a bow window. * Bow: a type of Bay window, but arc shaped with four or more glass sections to simulate a rounded appearance. * Fixed: A window that cannot be opened. A non-opening window is sometimes called a "light" because its function is limited to allowing light to enter without any outside air. * Picture: A very large fixed window in a wall, which provides an unimpeded view "as if framing a picture". Classic styles: * Clerestory: A fixed, vertical window set in a roof structure or high in a wall, used for daylighting. You'll see these in the old churches around the world, like Notre Dame. Clerestory lights are any rows of windows above eye level for providing light. * Oriel: Projects from the wall, and were originally a form of a porch. Often seen on upper stories of older buildings. Often supported by brackets, or by corbels (a type of architectural bracket), they do not reach the ground. These are the rounded columnar windows you see on older buildings. * Palladian: A large arched window which is divided into three parts. The center section is larger than the two side sections. Renaissance and classical architecture often have Palladian windows.

    Window glass repair part 2

This week we are going to continue our series on single pane window glass repair. Let's talk about broken glass in a fixed window, usually referred to as a picture window. The most common type will have metal stops on the outside, around all four edges of the window glass. Sometimes these stops will be held in place with screws, and other times there will be aluminum stops that snap in place. In some rare instances there will be a rubber material in place of metal. If you have the screw type, you remove all of the screws and each piece will come out. If you have the metal snap in stops, carefully pry the stop from the frame using a small, flat screwdriver or a putty knife. You want to start in a corner and work along the stop until it comes out. Don't pry too much because the stops can bend very easily. If you have the rubber type, pry a corner away using the screwdriver, grab it with your fingers, and pull out the rubber. The glass shouldn't fall out because there is a glue or tape on the edge, holding the glass in place. From here, You can get your measurements for the new piece of glass. The glass edges will be exposed, and you can hook your tape measure to the edge and get your width and height. If there is a hole in the glass, measure the glass thickness. If there isn't a hole, put on some gloves and carefully push on the glass where the crack is located. This will expose the edge so you can measure it. When you go to get the new glass, you're going to need a tube of silicone to replace the glue or tape holding the glass in place. Once you get the glass home, you need to remove the old glass. Go inside and cut between the glass and frame using a utility knife with a new blade. This will cut away the silicone or tape that is holding the old glass. Be sure to wear heavy gloves during this process to avoid getting cut. Start at the top and cut across from one corner to the other. Then cut down one side, from top to bottom. Do the other side the same way. At this point the glass should fall out. You should place a tarp or sheet under the window to catch the glass as it falls out. Using a stiff putty knife, scrape off the old silicone or tape from the frame. If there were setting blocks on the bottom, be sure to reuse them. They act as shims to raise the glass off the bottom. Now run a bead of silicone about 3/16" thick around the perimeter of the opening. Grab your new glass on the sides, angle the bottom in and the top out, set the glass on the setting blocks, then slowly raise the glass up into place. Push just hard enough that all four edges of the glass contact the silicone, but not so hard that the glass makes contact with the metal frame. Install your outside stops. Don't clean the glass for 24 hours so the silicone can set up.

Window blinds different kind of blinds

Window blinds have been in usage for long time now covering windows preventing entry of light. The historic evolution of blinds are not very clear, but there are theories that blinds were first designed and used in Venice if one were to go by the popular blind type. People have been using window blinds for privacy also in addition to light preventing Sun light and eventually heat in summer. Although there are many types of window blinds, one which is a hit with every one is the Venetian blinds. Varieties of Window Blinds When we distinguish blinds according to their making, we can differentiate door and window blinds just by their respective sizes. The different kinds of blinds are as follows. At the top are Venetian blinds because of their popularity. The slats of the blinds are made of plastic or metal. Wooden slats and bamboo slats are not unusual and they are known by their respective names only. For example wooden blinds and bamboo blinds. The usual width of slats is 50 mm but you can occasionally find someone using blinds of upto 120 mm width too. One window on a wide wall having 120 mm slats add to the aesthetics of the room. Venetian blinds have a couple of equally popular variants too. 1. Mini blinds; here the slats are pretty narrow and you can’t expect it to be wider than 19 mm. 2. Vertical blinds; slats are vertical here thus giving it the name. Additionally, you can find the slats made of stiffen fabric. It is possible to turn the slats by 90 degrees when they hang from their ends from a guide rail. Slat type window blinds open by turning in place which is facilitated by turning rotator attachments connected to strings. There are special types in window blinds, such as solid blinds referring to those which can be opened by pulling up or by pushing up only. These can’t be opened in place as they are made of one solid sheet material. Examples of these are here. Holland Blinds: One most common Holland blind type is woven wood blind, woven by simple strings so that they can just roll up or fold up to open. These are preferred in tropical conditions because of their higher efficiency in Sun control. The natural appearance gives an exquisite feel and gels totally with the ambience. Pleated Blinds: Stiffened fabric made blinds just pull-up to open and when pulled up they fit the recess at the top. Honeycomb Blinds: You can call these as cellular shades also because of their two or more layered cellular construction. These provide better insulation thanks to their cellular design.
