The hurrier i go the behinder i get

When are Social Security checks potentially loans and not benefits? Why, when you have "excess earnings" of course. In today's economy, many senior citizens still work during their "retirement" either because they want to or, all too often, because they must to make ends meet. Retirees who want to work as well as collect social security retirement benefits must plan their compensation carefully if they want to avoid losing some or all of their social security benefits. In order to collect social security "old age" benefits, you must be "retired." Congress has reasoned that if you earn more than a specified amount, you are not "retired" and, therefore, are subject to having some or all of your benefits eliminated. Congress does allow you some earnings before your benefits are jeopardized. The amount of allowable earnings depends on your age. If you are over 65, there is no limit on the amount you may earn and still collect your full benefit. If you are at least 62, but younger than 65, you may earn up to $12,480 in 2006 before your benefits are affected. The earnings limit is adjusted each year for inflation. If you earn in excess of the limit, you must repay some or, potentially, all of the benefits you receive. For every $2 you earn over the $12,480 limit, you must give up $1 of benefits. A special rule applies in the year in which you retire. In the initial retirement year, no matter how much is earned for the year, no benefits will be lost for any month in which you earn $1,040 (1/12 of $12,480) or less. For purposes of the retirement test, "earnings" are defined as "wages" earned as an employee or the "net earnings" of a self-employed person. The earnings must result from work performed after retirement. "In kind" payments of goods or services in exchange for work are considered earnings. Retirement plan distributions, rents, capital gains, interest, dividends and other investment-related income do not count as "earnings" for this purpose. You are required to report estimated earnings in excess of the limits. Benefits are then adjusted to reflect the amount owed, based on the estimate. Actual earnings figures should be reported by April 15 of the following year. Further adjustments may then be made based on actual results. An example will illustrate how Social Security benefits are reduced when a retiree has “excess earnings.” Mr. Baker is a 63 year old retired carpenter who receives $500 per month in social security benefits. During 2006 Mr. Baker earns a net of $14,000 for some cabinets he makes and sells. Mr. Baker's Social Security benefit will be reduced by $760 ((14,000 –12,480)/2). This brief article is no substitute for a careful consideration of your unique personal situation. Before making any significant retirement planning or tax strategy, consult your financial planner, attorney or tax advisor, as appropriate.

What Are the Specific Benefits of Exercise? Longevity and Aging Exercise, even after age 50, can add healthy and active years to one's life. Adding workouts that focus on speed and agility may be even more protective for older people. Flexibility exercises help reduce the stiffness and loss of balance that accompanies aging. Simply walking regularly can prolong life in the elderly. Moderately fit people, even if they smoke or have high blood pressure, have a lower mortality rate than the least fit. Studies continue to show that it is never too late to start exercising and that even small improvements in physical fitness can significantly lower the risk of death. Resistance training is important for the elderly, because it is the only form of exercise that can slow and even reverse the decline in muscle mass, bone density, and strength. Cardiovascular Health (Heart Disease and Stroke) Heart Failure. In one study, patients between the ages of 61 and 91 increased their oxygen consumption by 20% after six months by engaging in supervised treadmill and stationary bicycle exercises. Performing daily hand grip exercises may improve blood flow through the arteries of patients with heart failure. Traditionally, heart failure patients have been discouraged from exercising. Now, exercise is proving to be helpful for many of these patients and, when performed under medical supervision, does not pose a risk for a heart attack. Stroke. According to one analysis, a group of 11,000 men, men who burned between 2,000 and 3,000 calories a week (about an hour of brisk walking five days a week) cut their risk of stroke in half. The benefits of exercise on stroke are uncertain. Groups who burned between 1,000 and 2,000 calories or more than 3,000 calories per week also gained some protection against stroke but to a lesser degree. In the same study, exercise that involved recreation was more protective than exercise routines consisting simply of walking or climbing. General Guidelines. Inactivity is one of the four major risk factors for heart disease, on par with smoking, unhealthy cholesterol, and even high blood pressure. Children should be especially encouraged to exercise every day to prevent heart disease later in life. Exercise does not increase the maximum heart rate, but a fit heart can pump more blood at this maximum level and can sustain it longer with less strain. Exercise even helps reverse some of the effects of smoking. Children should be especially encouraged to exercise every day to prevent heart disease later in life. Like all muscles, the heart becomes stronger and larger as a result of exercise so it can pump more blood through the body with every beat. For preventing heart disease frequency of exercises may be more important than duration. The resting heart rate of those who exercise is also slower, because less effort is needed to pump blood. Effect on Coronary Artery Disease and Cholesterol Levels. People who maintain an active lifestyle have a 45% lower risk of developing coronary heart disease than do sedentary people. A recent study reported that moderate dietary changes improve cholesterol levels and so lower the risk for coronary artery disease only when an aerobic exercise program is also followed. Regular aerobic exercises -- brisk walking, jogging, swimming, biking, aerobic dance, and racquet sports -- are the best forms of exercise for lowering LDL and raising HDL cholesterol levels. It may take up to a year of sustained exercise for HDL levels to show significant improvement. Burning at least 250 calories a day (the equivalent of about 45 minutes of brisk walking or 25 minutes of jogging) seems to confer the greatest protection against coronary artery disease. Even moderate exercise, however, reduces the risk of heart attack, but in terms of raising HDL levels, more is better. Resistance (weight) training offers a complementary benefit by reducing LDL levels. Triglycerides, which rise after a high-fat meal, can be lowered either with a single, prolonged (about 90 minutes) aerobic session or by several shorter sessions during the day. One study indicates, however, that short-bursts of exercise actually increase LDL oxidation -- the process that makes LDL dangerous to the heart -- so individuals should always aim for a consistency in their exercise program. Before engaging in any strenuous exercise, it is advisable to consult a physician. High Blood Pressure. No person with high blood pressure should start an exercise program without consulting a physician. Before exercising, people with hypertension should avoid caffeinated beverages, which increase heart rate, the workload of the heart, and blood pressure during physical activity. In one study, for example, moderate exercise (jogging two miles a day) controlled hypertension so well that more than half the patients who had been taking drugs for high blood pressure were able to discontinue their medication. Studies have shown that high-intensity exercise may not lower blood pressure as effectively as moderate intensity exercise. Sedentary people have a 35% greater risk of developing hypertension than athletes do. Studies indicate that regular exercise helps keep arteries elastic, even in older people, which in turn keeps blood flowing and blood pressure low. Studies have indicated that T'ai Chi, an ancient Chinese exercise involving slow, relaxing movements may lower blood pressure almost as well as moderate-intensity aerobic exercises. Diabetes Regular exercise, even of moderate intensity, improves insulin sensitivity. Aerobic exercise is proving to have significant and particular benefits for people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes; it increases sensitivity to insulin, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and decreases body fat. Diabetes, particularly type 2, is reaching epidemic proportions throughout the world as more and more cultures adopt Western dietary habits. In fact, studies of older people who engage in regular, moderate, aerobic exercise (e. g., brisk walking, biking) lower their risk for diabetes even if they don't lose weight. Anyone on insulin or who has complications from diabetes must take special precautions before embarking on a workout program (see, What Are the Hazards of Exercise?, below). Effects on Bones and Joints Back Problems. One of the most common complaints of modern men and women, lower-back pain, afflicts up to 80% of all Americans. The best exercises for athletes with bad backs include swimming, walking, and cross-country skiing. High-impact sports, including aerobic dance and downhill skiing, should be avoided. An appropriate exercise program focusing on flexibility and strengthening the muscles in the abdomen may help prevent back problems. However, the classic full sit-up (raising your head and shoulders off the floor up to your knees) may aggravate back pain and should be avoided by anyone at risk for lower back problems. Yoga stretching is beneficial and can be incorporated into the warm-up and cool-down periods. Sedentary living, obesity, poor posture, badly designed furniture, and stress all contribute to back pain. Exercises that strengthen the abdominal muscles such as partial sit-ups, which maintain the back's normal curve and help support the body's weight, can alleviate stress on the lower back. Osteoarthritis. The three types of exercise that are best for people with arthritis are range of motion, strengthening (or resistance), and aerobic exercises. Exercise helps to reduce pain and stiffness, and increases flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, and well being. Exercising also helps people reduce their weight and maintain weight loss. These exercises may be particularly important if leg muscle weakness turns out to be a cause of osteoarthritis, as some research suggests. One study compared a group of patients who embarked on an aerobic and resistance exercise program with a group that received patient education; the exercising group developed less disability and pain and showed a better ability to perform physical tasks. Strengthening exercises include isometric exercises (pushing or pulling against static resistance) and stretching exercises to build strength and flexibility without unduly stressing the joints. Cycling and walking are beneficial, and swimming or exercising in water is highly recommended for people with arthritis. Patients should strive for short but frequent exercise sessions guided by physical therapists or certified instructors. Osteoarthritis patients should avoid high-impact sports such as jogging, tennis, and racquetball. Low-impact aerobics also help stabilize and support the joints and may even reduce inflammation in some joints. Osteoporosis. Women should begin exercising before adolescence, since bone mass increases during puberty and reaches its peak between ages 20 and 30. Exercise is very important for slowing the progression of osteoporosis. High-impact weight-bearing exercises, such as step aerobics, are very protective for premenopausal women. These exercises, however, increase the risk for osteoporotic fractures in elderly patients, who would benefit most from regular, brisk, long walks. Careful weight training is beneficial as well for older women. Low-impact exercises that improve balance and strength, particularly yoga and T'ai Chi, have been found to decrease the risk of falling; in one study, T'ai Chi reduced the risk by almost half. Weight bearing exercise, which applies tension to muscle and bone, encourages the body to compensate for the added stress by increasing bone density by as much as 2% to 8% a year. Even moderate exercise (as little as an hour a week) helps reduce the risk for fracture, but everyone who is in good health should aim for more. Cancer A recent study of 100,000 nurses, however, suggested that the benefits of exercise on breast health may be greater or lesser at different times in a woman's life, depending on her menstrual status and estrogen levels. For example, the study found no added protection against from exercise in young adulthood (when the disease is uncommon in any case). Strenuous activity, in fact, adds only slight or no additional benefit. Moderate exercise may also help reduce the risk for prostate cancer and possibly for breast cancer. A number of studies have indicated that regular, even moderate, exercise reduces the risk of colon cancer. Leg Cramps In six-month studies, people had tripled the amount of time they could walk before the onset of pain. The best approach in such cases is to walk until pain develops; then rest until pain resolves before resuming walking. Exercise can even improve pain from clogged arteries in the legs, a condition called intermittent claudication. Lung Disease Although exercise does not improve lung function (except for intense, regular aerobic exercise), training helps some patients with chronic lung disease by strengthening their limb muscles, thus improving endurance and reducing breathlessness. Central Nervous System Diseases Exercise machines, aquatic exercises, and walking are particularly useful. People with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease should be encouraged to exercise. Specialized exercise programs that improve mobility are particularly valuable for Parkinson's patients. Patients with neurological disorders who exercise experience less spasticity as well as reduction in -- and even reversal of -- muscle atrophy. In addition, the psychological benefits of exercise are extremely important in managing these disorders. Pregnancy Healthy women with normal pregnancies should exercise at least three times a week, being careful to warm up, cool down, and drink plenty of liquids. Experts advise, in general, that when exercising, the expectant mother's pulse rate should not exceed 70% to 75% of the maximum heart rate or more than 150 beats per minute. Fit women who have exercised regularly before pregnancy, however, may work out more intensively as long as no discomfort occurs. According to a new study, vigorous exercise may improve the chances for a timely delivery. During exercise, women should monitor their temperature to avoid overheating -- a side effect that can damage the fetus. (No pregnant women should use hot tubs or steam baths, which can cause fetal damage and miscarriage.) And all pregnant women should avoid high-impact, jerky, and jarring exercises, such as aerobic dancing, which can weaken the pelvic floor muscles that support the uterus. Walking is also highly beneficial. To strengthen pelvic muscles, women should perform Kegel exercises at least 6 times a day, which involve contracting the muscles around the vagina and urethra for 3 seconds 12 to 15 times in a row. Swimming may be the best option for most pregnant women. It involves no impact, overheating is unlikely, and swimming face down promotes optimum blood flow to the uterus. Overly strenuous exercise during pregnancy is not advocated, however, for women who did not exercise intensely before becoming pregnant. Many prenatal calisthenics programs are available. Effects on Colds and Flu People should avoid strenuous physical activity when they have high fevers or widespread viral illnesses, however. High-intensity or endurance exercises might actually suppress the immune system while they are performed. Although offering no evidence of improved immunity from exercise, one study reported that people who exercised as little as once a week in employee fitness programs averaged nearly five fewer sick days annually than those who did not participate in such programs. The immediate effect of exercise on the immune system is uncertain. Some highly trained athletes, for instance, report being susceptible to colds after strenuous events. A recent study suggested that in people who already have colds, exercise has no effect on the illness -- severity or duration of the infection. Gastrointestinal Problems Older people who exercise moderately may have a lower risk for severe gastrointestinal bleeding. Experts suggest that moderate exercise might even reduce the risk for some intestinal disorders, including ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, and diverticulosis. Weight Loss Exercise burns calories and can help individuals fight obesity. Nonetheless, a fit body will look more toned and be healthier. If caloric intake remains constant, regular workouts lead to weight loss. Effective weight loss means a long-term commitment to a regular program of vigorous exercise. Be forewarned, however, that the pounds won't melt off magically. It takes 35 miles of walking or jogging to consume the calories in one pound of fat. One recent study indicated that for obese patients, a few daily sessions for as short as 10 minutes each was effective in helping the patients adhere to an exercise program. Abdominal fat is a particular danger to the heart, although it is unknown whether doing crunches will specifically protect against heart disease. Abdominal crunches may help replace abdominal fat with muscle. To perform this exercise, the individual lies on the back with the head and shoulders raised; he or she contracts the stomach muscles, curling the torso slightly forward. Swimming is less effective than walking or cycling in reducing body fat, but overall regular aerobic exercise is a good way to shed pounds. People should be warned that without dieting, weight loss may be minimal with exercise alone, because dense muscle mass replaces fat as the body gets more fit. Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not increase appetite in people who want to lose weight; oddly enough, however, exercise improves appetite in people who are already lean. Psychological and Emotional Benefits Exercising may even enhance creativity and imagination. According to one study, older people who are physically fit respond to mental challenges just as quickly as unfit young adults. (Stretching and weight training appear to have no such effects.) Both aerobic and nonaerobic workouts have been shown to reduce depression. Aerobic exercise is linked with improved mental vigor, including reaction time, acuity, and math skills. According to one study, exercise was as effective for improving mood in people with clinical depression as some common forms of psychotherapy. One study found that teenagers who were active in sports have a much better sense of well being than their sedentary peers; the more vigorously they exercised, the better was their emotional health. Either brief periods of intense training or prolonged aerobic workouts can raise levels of important chemicals in the brain, such as endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine, that produce feelings of pleasure, causing the so-called runner's high. In one study, regular brisk walking cut in half the incidence of sleep disturbances in people who suffer from them. It should be noted that exercise in the evening, however, can cause sleep disturbances. Rhythmic aerobic and yoga exercises may be particularly helpful for combating stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness.

The ins and outs of day trading

: Day trading is one of the most popular forms of trading because the only components you need are a computer and an Internet connection. You can trade from almost any location you wish: your home, your office, the park, wherever suits you best. Because of this flexibility, day trading has the potential to be a very lucrative career for committed traders, but it’s definitely not something you should jump into without a little planning and forethought. To succeed at day trading, you must be willing to work hard, stay focused, and learn as many new strategies and techniques as possible, just like the pros. What Exactly IS Day Trading? Day trading is the practice of buying and selling financial instruments throughout the day. As the day progresses, prices will rise and fall in value, creating both the opportunity for gain and the possibility of loss.

When traded strategically, the trends and fluctuations in the markets allow for quick profits to be made in brief periods of time. Keep in mind, however, that day trading is specifically designed to result in smaller earnings on a regular basis; it is NOT designed to result in huge fortunes through a single trade. Day trading can be very profitable, but it is not a get-rich-quick scheme (though many seminars convincingly sell it as such). Nor is day trading a sure road to immeasurable wealth and success (as some hyped-up websites would have you believe). Quite simply, day trading is just like any other business venture: in order to be successful at it, you need to have a PLAN.

It would be very risky to dive in head-first without looking. However, with the right tools – and with the knowledge of how to use these tools efficiently and effectively – the risks of day trading can be greatly reduced. How to Succeed With Day Trading Traders who enjoy the most success in day trading, regardless of whether they’re in it for a living or for some extra income on the side, generally have solid trading strategies and the discipline to stick to their trading plan. Keep in mind that day trading is a very competitive field, and, in order to succeed, you need to maintain focus on a set of simple strategies which you can implement immediately, without hesitation. Remember, a proven, strategic trading plan can give you an edge over the rest of the market. Now, devising a trading strategy is all well and good, but you may be wondering how to determine whether or not YOUR strategy is a SUCCESSFUL strategy. There are a few ways to determine this. Most traders rely on back-testing. Back-testing allows you to take a closer look at a certain strategy and see how it would have performed in the past, thereby allowing you to predict with more accuracy how it will perform in the future. (NOTE: Although back-testing is an effective technique, be aware that past performance is not always indicative of future results). Unfortunately, even with a tested, proven trading strategy, you are not guaranteed trading success. It takes something else. It takes discipline. A profitable strategy is useless without discipline. Successful day traders must have the discipline to follow their system rigorously, because they know that only trades which are indicated by that system have the highest probability of resulting in a profit. Whether you’re new to trading or have been trading for years, it’s all too tempting to place the entirety of your trust in graphs, charts, and software. If only trading was as easy as that! Simply purchasing trading templates and computer programs does not guarantee your success as a trader. Too many hobby traders have tried that, and, unsurprisingly, they’ve failed. They bought the tools, but they didn’t have the knowledge they needed to succeed. As in all things, education will do wonders for the aspiring – and experienced – trader. Of course, this is not to say that software programs and markers are not helpful when it comes to day trading. On the contrary, many traders use technical indicators which are instrumental to their success – a few examples of these are the MACD, moving averages, and Stochastics. However, though profitable day traders DO follow their indicators, they are also aware that nothing is 100% foolproof. You will not get rich on just a single day trade. Successful traders know that trying to hit a lucrative home run on just one trade is a sure way to get burned. The key is consistency. You need to devise a solid strategy that produces consistent trading profits, and you need to learn and adapt as your experience with day trading grows and evolves. In Conclusion… There’s no doubt about it: day trading can be a profitable and exciting way to earn money. And, with the right knowledge, you can radically reduce the risk, which will create even more opportunities for achieving trading success. If you are not willing to spend the time learning the techniques of trading, reading about new and improved trading strategies, and working wholeheartedly in a fast-paced trading environment, then day trading is probably not for you. However, if you have the drive, dedication, and discipline, day trading could seriously impact the shape and success of your financial future!

The magic bullet theory of investing

: Sadly, too many people believe that the successful in our society got that way through luck. So their financial plan is based not on earning and investing money, but waiting for their fairy godmother to show up. Some “miracle” roads to riches: The Lottery What better way to get rich, but to play the lottery. Even though the odds are 200 million to one, somebody’s got to win – right? Why not you? The ancillary to this is gambling. Go to Vegas or Atlantic City and blow the paycheck at the blackjack table or, even better, the roulette wheel. Or go to the track and try to hit the trifecta. Most gamblers will blow their winnings away sooner or later. They really aren’t in it for the money. But lottery winners, those who get checks for millions of dollars, apparently have the same problem. I have read that the majority of lottery winners blow all that money away with five years or so. Get Rich Quick Schemes You get a letter in the mail or you see an ad on the internet. Just send in a few bucks or a few hundred bucks or a few thousand bucks and you too will be raking in $35,000 a week while you lounge on the beach. Other variations are: $100 an hour stuffing envelopes; $500 an hour for filing out forms on your computer; or buying a pre-made website and sitting back while watching your bank account fill up. Don’t forget to check out those government grants for paying off your debts. In this case, the ones making the money are truly lucky – for finding another sucker to fall for their schemes. Why not go down to Mexico and pick up a kilo of cocaine to sell on the streets. The markup - and your legal fees – will be tremendous. Or give all your savings to the guy you met in the bar whose paying out a “guaranteed” 50% a month interest. You brother-in-law is in on this deal, so you know it really works. Anybody ever heard of a guy named Ponzi? The Government Will Take Care of Everything There’s no such thing as a free lunch and, even though the government hands them out to anyone who asks, someone has to pay, in this case the taxpayers. Did you know that the percentage of people not paying income taxes in the US is approaching 50%? If nobody’s paying, where does the free lunch come from? There are only so many “wealthy” taxpayers left to soak. In New York City, the low income clients of the Housing Authority are being asked for “givebacks” in the form of higher fees. Social Security is on the ropes. The golden goose is beginning to run dry. All government handouts come with strings attached. If the government gives you something, it will then want to tell you how to live. Are you ready for the trade-off? Great Expectations The long term average return of the stock market is 10% a year. However, if you do a little calculating, you see that you will never reach your goals at that rate. So you figure a 15% return. There are many people who successfully beat that the stock market year after year. It takes a lot of work to do so. Even the pros have a hard time. If you have acquired the learning and are willing to put in the effort, you may be able to safely make that assumption. But don’t base your financial affairs on a simple assumption, hoping your dreams will come true through, just because you’ve been lucky all your life. You can steal money or inherit it. Most people have to work for it and they have to work even harder to make it grow.

The magic of compounding part i

Some of you know about this, some of you don't. Either way I'm going to give you the basics of compounding, plus a couple of new slants on the concept. I suggest you read The Magic of Compounding not just once, but several times. If you have children, print this write-up, and give it to them to read. If they master this concept they will become rich. The Basics Compounding describes how numbers, or money, can grow. Numbers can grow in an arithmetic progression, for example 2,4,6,8,10,12 or 3,6,9,12,15,18, where one unit is added on at each step in the progression and that action provides the growth, or, numbers can grow exponentially, 2,4,8,16,32,64. In an exponential progression the increase comes by doubling the number at each step in the progression. See the difference? This is compounding. Now the really amazing part, the magic, comes when you see how fast compounding will make money grow. And guess what! That's right, I've got a little game to play with you, a little story to tell, which will illustrate this principle. This puzzle is as old as J. P. Morgan's moustache comb, so if you've already been schooled in compounding you have heard it before. But didn't I tell you to read this section several times? OK, then, solve the puzzle with us once more while I tell it for the first time to the children for whom "The Magic of Compounding" has just been printed out. The Puzzle I'm a wealthy and generous man, and I want to hire you to work for me for one month. Since I'm also flexible, I give you a choice: you can choose to be paid the entire month's salary up front on the first day of your employment, or, I will pay you 1 cent the first day. After that I'll double your pay every day for the rest of the month, but you won't get the money until the last day of the month. So on the first day you'll work 8 whole hours, and you'll have 1 cent coming to you. But on the second day you'll earn 2 cents. Hold on, it gets better. On the 3rd you'll have earned 4 cents, the day after that 8 cents and so on. Saturdays and Sundays are included just to give you a better chance. Oh, by the way, if you take your pay all at once on the first day I'll give you a million bucks ($1,000,000.00) cash. Seems like an easy choice, doesn't it? Well, you decide for yourself. Now let's look at how much the fellows who picked the penny-a-day plan are going to have at month's end. Remember, on the one hand $1,000,000.00. On the other hand you get a penny the first day, two cents on the second day, 4 cents on the 3rd day, and 16 cents on the 5thday. If you keep working the numbers by the 15th day, you are up to $163.84. By the 18th day, you have cracked the $1,000 dollar mark coming in with $1310.72. At this point you have to start thinking to yourself that it has taken 18 days, and I am only at $1300 and change. Was I better off taking the million dollars like the other day offered and taking a one million dollar lump sum payment? Maybe you were let’s see what happens. Keep in mind, we are continuing to double our money every day and we have 12 days to go. On the 20th day, you are up to $5,242.88. Your numbers quickly move up from here on successive days: Day 21 $10,485.76 Day 22 $20,971.52 Day 23 $41,943.04 Day 24 $83,886.08 Day 25 $167,772.16 Day 26 $335,544.32 By the way, did any of you ask me what month of the year we're in? Is it February with 28 days, or leap year with 29 days, or September with 30 days, or December with 31 days? You should realize that it's going to make a difference. Do you want the million dollars? Ask your kids again which they would choose? Day 27 $671,088.64 Day 28 $1,342,177.28 Day 29 $2,684,354.56 Day 30 $5,368,254.56 Day 31 $10,737,418.24 If you work for me in September with 30 days you make over $5,000,000. In December it's over $10,000,000! I have never met the child who didn't leap at the $1,000,000 on day one. This is because the human mind thinks arithmetically, not exponentially. You might say that we are hardwired to think in this linear fashion. The software in our brains compels us to think about progressions as being simple arithmetic ones. Luckily though, how we think about things, our prejudices, our attitudes, and our mindsets, can all be changed and worked with. We can update the software! We can consciously change the way we think about numbers, money and investing by absorbing new information, namely, that when you make your money compound you can get rich sooner rather than later. Start thinking exponentially, Make Money Now Regards, Richard C. Stoyeck StocksAtBottom

    The new investor special report

The Nature of Stocks and Their Markets Stock Brokers Besides money, the only thing you need to start investing is a stock broker. Your broker will be the individual or organization that have execute your buy and sell orders. They will have an account for you which is just like a normal bank account, except that it can contain not only cash, but stocks and bonds as well. Money from the sale of shares will go into this account, and cash to buy shares will be taken from this account. There are two types of stock brokers which you can choose between, full service and discount. Each has advantages and disadvantages, as discussed below. Full Service Stock Brokers Full service brokers will give you advice and investment recommendations. However, they do have very high commission fees and are usually only suitable for investors who have a great deal of money to invest and who do few trades. For penny stock investment, the frequency of trading and the small amounts of capital per trade make full service brokers inappropriate, because their commission fees will be too high. You may be required to pay as much as $100 or more to have your full service broker buy you some shares, and just as much again when you sell. Discount Stock Brokers Discount brokers can answer any investment questions you may have, but they offer fewer personalized services for their clients, such as making stock recommendations or giving you portfolio advice. These are the brokers you see on television, advertising $10 or $20 a trade commission fees. When you buy or sell stock, you will be required to pay this lower commission rate, and can therefore keep more of your own money in your pocket. As well, with discount brokers you can often monitor your account and execute trade orders from your computer or through an automated telephone system. With the computer system you are able to see all of your open buy orders, check market indexes and get stock price quotes. On-line discount brokers are best for anyone investing in penny stocks, as you are able to check prices anywhere there is a modem, and as many times as you like throughout the day. When you've chosen which broker you want to establish an account with, simply contact them and they will help you fill out any forms and set up your account. You generally will need an initial deposit of cash. Getting your account running and ready for trading is simple and should not take more than three days. Buy Orders When you want to acquire shares of a stock, you give your broker a buy order. Make sure you have enough money in your account to cover the cost of the shares, as well as the commission fee. You will need to know the following; 1. The ticker symbol of the stock (i. e.- COMX is the ticker symbol for Comtrex Systems) 2. The market the stock is trading on (i. e.- NASDAQ) 3. How many shares you want to acquire. This is also referred to as the volume. With penny stocks you should always buy in multiples of 1000 shares, as you may be otherwise subject to extra commission charges from your broker. 4. The price you are willing to pay for the shares. A 'market' order means you are willing to pay the best available price at the time. A 'limit' order means you will specify a price which you are willing to pay, and your trade will only take place if shares reach that price. We strongly suggest the use of limit orders, to increase you control over the transaction and to avoid price volatility. 5. The duration of your order. For example, you may keep your order good for just that trading day, or have it good every trading day until it expires on the date you specified, which may be weeks later. Thus, an example order you might enter would be; "I wish to buy 6000 shares of Lore Diamonds, ticker symbol LOR, at 19 cents or less. The stock is on the Vancouver exchange, and I want this order to stay active until Friday of this week." If the price of LOR hits 19 cents or less, your broker should acquire the shares for you. You will find that 6000 shares of LOR have been added to your account, and the money for them has been taken out (6000 shares * $0.19 = $1140 + commission fee). Sell Orders A sell order is simply the reverse process of buying. Make sure you know how many shares you have in your account when selling a stock. Tell your broker; "I wish to sell the 6000 shares of Lore Diamonds from my account. The ticker symbol is LOR, and the stock is on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. I want to sell at 24 cents or higher, and keep the order good for the day." If the price of LOR hits 24 cents or higher, your shares should be sold and the money from the transaction (6000 shares * $0.24 = $1440 - commission fee) deposited into your account within three days, ready to be used in another purchase. Special Trading Notes When trading on an exchange, investors either enter a bid price (if they are buying) or an ask price (if they are selling). When a bid and ask price meet at an agreed price, a trade takes place. In other words, if you are willing to pay 24 cents per share for a stock, and someone is willing to sell shares of the same stock for 24 cents, you will exchange the shares for the cash. At any one time there are usually several buy orders and sell orders all at different prices for a given stock. However, when you check a stock quote you will only see the highest bid price and the lowest ask price, representing the most that investors are willing to pay for the shares, and the lowest price at which shareholders are willing to sell, respectively. Due to the 'best price' priority, your order to buy stock will not get filled until all buy orders of a higher price are filled first. Similarly, your sell orders will not get filled until sell orders of a lower price are filled. For orders to buy (or sell) stock that are entered at the same price as other similar orders, preference will be given by the exchange in the order in which they were received. Unfilled Orders Due to the above mentioned ranking order, and the often light volume of shares trading, you may not always get your order filled. You may put in an order to buy at a certain price, and find that the shares did not trade at that price during the duration of your order, and therefore you did not make the transaction. There will be no broker fee when no trade takes place. Partial Fills You may also find that you got your order partially filled. You may want 8000 shares of a stock, but only get 2000. This is because only 2000 shares were available at the price you had stipulated. This applies to both buying and selling. If you notice that this may be the case mid-day, you can respond by adjusting the price of your order to ensure you trade all the shares you want. You will not get an extra commission for that. However, if your order spans several days and is partly filled on more than one day, you will get a commission charge from your broker each day you trade shares. Canceling and Changing Open Orders Buy and sell orders can be canceled or changed during their duration. Consult your broker for more information about changing open orders.

    The process of due diligence

A business which wants to attract foreign investments must present a business plan. But a business plan is the equivalent of a visit card. The introduction is very important - but, once the foreign investor has expressed interest, a second, more serious, more onerous and more tedious process commences: Due Diligence. "Due Diligence" is a legal term (borrowed from the securities industry). It means, essentially, to make sure that all the facts regarding the firm are available and have been independently verified. In some respects, it is very similar to an audit. All the documents of the firm are assembled and reviewed, the management is interviewed and a team of financial experts, lawyers and accountants descends on the firm to analyze it. First Rule: The firm must appoint ONE due diligence coordinator. This person interfaces with all outside due diligence teams. He collects all the materials requested and oversees all the activities which make up the due diligence process. The firm must have ONE VOICE. Only one person represents the company, answers questions, makes presentations and serves as a coordinator when the DD teams wish to interview people connected to the firm. Second Rule: Brief your workers. Give them the big picture. Why is the company raising funds, who are the investors, how will the future of the firm (and their personal future) look if the investor comes in. Both employees and management must realize that this is a top priority. They must be instructed not to lie. They must know the DD coordinator and the company's spokesman in the DD process. The DD is a process which is more structured than the preparation of a Business Plan. It is confined both in time and in subjects: Legal, Financial, Technical, Marketing, Controls. The Marketing Plan Must include the following elements: a.. A brief history of the business (to show its track performance and growth). b.. Points regarding the political, legal (licences) and competitive environment. c.. A vision of the business in the future. d.. Products and services and their uses. e.parison of the firm's products and services to those of the competitors. f.. Warranties, guarantees and after-sales service. g.. Development of new products or services. h.. A general overview of the market and market segmentation. i.. Is the market rising or falling (the trend: past and future). j.. What customer needs do the products / services satisfy. k.. Which markets segments do we concentrate on and why. l.. What factors are important in the customer's decision to buy (or not to buy). m.. A list of the direct competitors and a short description of each. n.. The strengths and weaknesses of the competitors relative to the firm. o.. Missing information regarding the markets, the clients and the competitors. p.. Planned market research. q.. A sales forecast by product group. r.. The pricing strategy (how is pricing decided). s.. Promotion of the sales of the products (including a description of the sales force, sales-related incentives, sales targets, training of the sales personnel, special offers, dealerships, telemarketing and sales support). Attach a flow chart of the purchasing process from the moment that the client is approached by the sales force until he buys the product. t.. Marketing and advertising campaigns (including cost estimates) - broken by market and by media. u.. Distribution of the products. v.. A flow chart describing the receipt of orders, invoicing, shipping. w.. Customer after-sales service (hotline, support, maintenance, complaints, upgrades, etc.). x.. Customer loyalty (example: churn rate and how is it monitored and controlled). Legal Details a.. Full name of the firm. b.. Ownership of the firm. c.. Court registration documents. d.. Copies of all protocols of the Board of Directors and the General Assembly of Shareholders. e.. Signatory rights backed by the appropriate decisions. f.. The charter (statute) of the firm and other incorporation documents. g.. Copies of licences granted to the firm. h.. A legal opinion regarding the above licences. i.. A list of lawsuit that were filed against the firm and that the firm filed against third parties (litigation) plus a list of disputes which are likely to reach the courts. j.. Legal opinions regarding the possible outcomes of all the lawsuits and disputes including their potential influence on the firm. Financial Due Diligence Last 3 years income statements of the firm or of constituents of the firm, if the firm is the result of a merger. The statements have to include: a.. Balance Sheets; b.. Income Statements; c.. Cash Flow statements; d.. Audit reports (preferably done according to the International Accounting Standards, or, if the firm is looking to raise money in the USA, in accordance with FASB); e.. Cash Flow Projections and the assumptions underlying them. Controls a.. Accounting systems used; b.. Methods to price products and services; c.. Payment terms, collections of debts and ageing of receivables; d.. Introduction of international accounting standards; e.. Monitoring of sales; f.. Monitoring of orders and shipments; g.. Keeping of records, filing, archives; h.. Cost accounting system; i.. Budgeting and budget monitoring and controls; j.. Internal audits (frequency and procedures); k.. External audits (frequency and procedures); l.. The banks that the firm is working with: history, references, balances. Technical Plan a.. Description of manufacturing processes (hardware, software, communications, other); b.. Need for know-how, technological transfer and licensing required; c.. Suppliers of equipment, software, services (including offers); d.. Manpower (skilled and unskilled); e.. Infrastructure (power, water, etc.); f.. Transport and communications (example: satellites, lines, receivers, transmitters); g.. Raw materials: sources, cost and quality; h.. Relations with suppliers and support industries; i.. Import restrictions or licensing (where applicable); j.. Sites, technical specification; k.. Environmental issues and how they are addressed; l.. Leases, special arrangements; m.. Integration of new operations into existing ones (protocols, etc.). A successful due diligence is the key to an eventual investment. This is a process much more serious and important than the preparation of the Business Plan.

The risks and rewards of investing in foreclosures

There are many different things to invest in these days. One investment route which individuals take is with regard to foreclosures. Foreclosures occur when the current homeowner of a property fails to pay their monthly mortgage and the property is repossessed by the lender. There are various risks and rewards which go along with investments of this type and some of these will be discussed below. Advantages and Disadvantages to Buying Pre-Foreclosure Properties One type of property sale which relates to foreclosures is the pre-foreclosure sale. A pre-foreclosure sale occurs when the lender allows the homeowner with past due mortgage payments to sell the home on their own and pay back the lender what they can from the sale of the home. The lender often agrees to this so that they do not have to get involved with possessing then reselling the home and the homeowner likes this option because it prevents foreclosure. The investor also benefits from this type of sale as well. Some advantages to purchasing an investment property via pre-foreclosure sale include discounted price, speedy purchase and wonderful profit opportunities. As for the disadvantages, the investor who buys property by way of a pre-foreclosure sale may find that the homeowner is hard to contact and/or unwilling to sell, the research is cumbersome and there are other potential buyers who wish to purchase the property. For those who wish to purchase property via a pre-foreclosure sale, they should do their independent research, approach the homeowner in a courteous manner and ensure that they make an offer that will not cause them to lose money in the end. By doing so, the investor may find that buying a house by pre-foreclosure sale will work to their advantage. Advantages and Disadvantages to Buying at a Foreclosure Auction Another way to purchase foreclosure property is through a foreclosure auction. Auctions of this type are usually held at the local courthouse of the county where the property is located within. This is a common way for foreclosed properties to be sold and this too has its pros and cons. The main advantage to purchasing property at a foreclosure auction is the reasonable price for which one can bid on a property. Although there will be other bidders, the resulting price is usually one that is quite attractive. Another advantage relates to the profit which the purchaser will see when they resell the home. Since the home was won at a reasonable amount, when the highest bidder goes to resell the property they will most likely see a good profit margin from that sale. With regard to the disadvantages, purchasing a home at a foreclosure auction has a few which are tied in with it. The first disadvantage to buying a home this way relates to the inability to inspect the property. As auction homes are usually sold as is, the bidder who wishes to adequately inspect the home beforehand will be unlikely to do so. Another disadvantage to purchasing a home via auction is that the purchase price and deposit is due via cash or cashier’s check in many instances which may be difficult for many investors to obtain on short notice. Advantages and Disadvantages to Buying Real Estate Owned (REO) Properties One last type of property purchase which relates to foreclosures is real estate owned properties, or REOs. An REO is when the property returns to the exclusive hands of the lender and then needs to be sold from that point. The lender is looking to sell their newly acquired property as soon as possible since they do not want to be in charge of the property and its necessary maintenance. The lender will then look for potential buyers of the property. Some advantages to buying an REO are that they usually have good title, property taxes will be up to date and repairs may have been made to the property by the lender to ready it for sale. As for the disadvantages, those who purchase REOs may find that the savings which they see by purchasing an REO are not as great as they could be and therefore, the profits may not be as great as well. Conclusion When purchasing property in any of the previously mentioned ways there are a few things to keep in mind when doing so. It is extremely important to do independent research with regard to the properties and purchase methods, ensure necessary funds for purchase and inspect the property whenever possible. This will help to ensure that the buying process goes as smoothly as possible.

The road block to your investing success

Worried about your stocks? Blame it on Wall Street. Investors today face a barrage of conflicting information and exaggerated return claims from what most people consider the "market" -; the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. But these indexes only comprise about 12 percent of all U. S. stocks. The reality is that these stocks can't be predicted with any consistency, especially long-term. In the complicated world of financial services, you're being misled. Wall Street advisors employ a strategy of "active marketing," which is the continual development of new products designed and marketed as the latest and greatest solution to investors' fears and concerns. There is an addiction factor at work here; active marketing feeds our desire to roll the dice. This rolling of the dice takes the form of stock picking, market timing and return chasing, activities otherwise known as active management. The alternative is to "super-diversify" your portfolio with a wide array of unrelated investment choices and assets. This strategy allows you to own the market as a whole, rather than just a few of its components, thereby increasing your return and reducing the risk. Based on Nobel Prize-winning research known as Modern Portfolio Theory, the application of this theory into a properly diversified portfolio - what I call a "Market Return Portfolio" - consists of no-load institutional asset class mutual funds you normally don't see in many portfolios. Choices such as micro-cap, small cap international, emerging markets and value stocks can lead to more consistent long-term returns equal to or somewhat greater than the market at large. Another important aspect of proper portfolio management is finding the right firm to work with. Look for one that is independent, uses a fee structure whereby the firm is paid directly and only from clients, and uses a market return approach. The right strategy, managed by the right help, can truly bring wealth without worry. In some sense, worry-free investing isn't really possible. People will always worry about taking care of their families and they'll always worry about their country's economy. Yet true "wealth without worry" means not having to track the daily movement of the market, saving time and energy for more important things in life. Investors' confidence should be put not in an adviser or their own stock-picking prowess, but rather in the economic miracle we call capitalism. By tracking market movement over the past seven or eight decades, we see that the market goes up more than 80 percent of the time. The expansion of capital markets is inevitable -; and a windfall for market return investors.

The role of a cta commodity trading advisor

Commodity Trading Advisor, Genuine Trading Solutions, a registered CTA with the CFTC, says the role today of a CTA is constantly evolving. Dwayne Strocen, President of Genuine Trading Solutions says once upon a time a Commodity Trading Advisor was content to be known as a Portfolio Manager trading commodities and futures for a managed futures fund. There is no question today’s investor has become more sophisticated. In response, today’s selection of investment products has become ever more complex and varied, the need for the CTA to understand the uses and management of these products becomes even more acute. So what exactly is the role of today’s Commodity Trading Advisor. Certainly trading of derivative products for a managed futures fund continues to be as important as before. A CTA has also become more involved with derivative analytics. This role is essentially focused upon becoming an analyst to structure and analyze the more multi-faceted requirements demanded by hedge funds, pension funds and structured products. The use of derivative analytics to manage the adverse risk of an equity or bond portfolio brought about by adverse market conditions is critical in preserving asset growth. The uses of hedging to prevent volatility has long been understood by the largest institutions but is now available to the smaller sized company and to the individual investor. No doubt as products continue to evolve so too will the CTA evolve to meet the need of today’s professional money manager. Derivative products are no longer limited to exchange traded commodities futures and options. There continues to be an ever expanding list of over-the-counter derivative products. These are SWAPS. SWAPS and privately transacted products transacted without the use of a recognized exchange. The difficulty is the buyer and seller must find each other to undertake such an arrangement, not always easy. The second problem is no liquidity. There is no one to sell this too should one of the parties wish to terminate the transaction prior to the agreed upon date. A Commodity Trading Advisor’s role is no longer sufficient to be limited to trading. It is now imperative to understand the industry in a new light so to understand the changing investment environment. Analysis now becomes the catalyst to include a value added service to retain customers. This includes structured products, risk management and OTC derivatives. Continuing education has been and continues to be the hallmark of the best in the industry.

The second step you have to take to get rich in the stock market

The second step you have to take to get yourself moving forward financially is to learn to monitor your financesputers can really help us today if we let them. Put all of your bills on auto pay and scrutinize everything monthly looking for wasted expenditures. If you have a spend thrift in your life that won’t stop them throw them off the train — divorce them or cut them out of the family. Over time you will know how much you can set aside to invest in the stock market. That amount may start out very small. I was just talking last night with a 78 year old friend of mine who is a stock market millionaire. He told me that when he started working in the 1950s $250 was a lot of money to earn in a week. Stock sold then, just like it does today, for $10-$15 in solid companies — he worked for a solid company. He told me that he and his wife believed in the stock market and methodically and with great discipline saved and invested each week into the stock market. At the time other company employees who did not save and invest had a lot more money to spend on finer cars and furnishings. My friend’s wife was a little frustrated to see the Jones always ahead materially but her husband assured her that things would be different in the future. Sure enough they are stock market millionaires now. I asked my friend what advice he would give you. He said that it is imperative to just get started saving and investing in you retirement plan at work up to the matching. If you have extra money open a Roth and if you have more than that then the minimum Roth contribution open a individual trading account. The main thing he wanted you to know is that you have to get started no matter how small it is. If you don’t you will never get ahead.

The secret of hacking an hyip program

HYIP can be a excellent way to experience success in investment. HYIP, also known as a high yield investment program, can be quite risky as the whole HYIP market. But at the same time if you use it right it can be quite profitable. So let me show you how you can hack this type of program. The one way to get out of risk is to expand your investment into a number of HYIPs regularly. And besides that, you cannot afford to keep any interest in your investment accounts for compounding. Removing them to your e-gold account is a wise thing to do. You can easily browse HYIPs from HYIP rank and monitor sites to get an idea about their authenticity. Some of these sites even sends catalogs of HYIPs with all the relevant comments, the payment standing on each HYIP and of course the rating. You must remember, that your investment and the consequent profit are not guaranteed at all in case of HYIPs. There is every possibility that you can even lose the principal amount, so be prepared. Take a note on some of the must do things regarding High Yielding Investment Programs. Be dead sure of not having all your money into an undersized HYIP program. No matter how promising they may look at the outset, do not get lured away. If you are ready to invest a large sum of money then do make sure to enquire whether the company offers any capital security against it. Invest your capital into as many programs as you can. It makes more sense to do the above than settling down with two to three small HYIP programs with huge sums. Remember, you need to focus on the plan and not the programs for that matter. As for smaller programs make it a point not to reinvest extra money before you have been paid back. Moreover, with HYIP programs it is advisable to plough back smaller profits from time to time. High Yielding Investment Programs can provide you with anything between 0.7 and 5% per day to say the least. And as for the longevity of a typical HYIP, it generally does not go beyond one year. HYIP forums come along with rating systems. Programs that have short investment-durations should be preferred. Additionally, the programs that pay back the invested sum must be chosen. You will have to keep bad programs out of our way. Try to investigate through the sites before you plunge into any kind of investment. The fact of the matter is that you will have to steer clear of "too good to be true" offers. This steps help you to avoid hyip losses. Now I earn more than $4000 thousand a month using my favourite golden rules.

The seeming lockstep price of crude oil and the morgan stanley capital international eafe based tsp 401k retirement i fu

A friend of mine at work got into the I fund (based on the Morgan Stanley Capital International EAFE) at the right time and rode it to some great profits. He said that as oil prices rose so did the I fund. Being a curious fellow I decided to take a look and an interesting pattern appeared. I graphed the five funds available in the Thrift Savings Plan, 401k retirement plan. The funds are: The C Fund is based on the S&P 500 The F Fund is designed to match the bonds in the Lehman Brothers U. S. Aggregate (LBA) index. The G Fund invests in short-term U. S. treasuries The S Fund follows the Wilshire 4500 index The I Fund follows the EAFE index I chose the start date of this graph as 5/1/2005. I chose this date for a reason. This was the start of the great price increase in oil last year. During this period, the C fund (based on the S&P 500) had a slow and steady rise. The S fund (based on the Wilshire 4500 index) had a greater rise but it was the I fund which almost seems to be in lock step with oil prices. When the price of NYMEX Light Sweet Crude rose, the I fund rose. When the price of NYMEX Light Sweet Crude fell, the I fund fell. There was not an exact percentage by percentage match but the pattern was unmistakable. We know that the I fund, which is based on the Morgan Stanley Capital International EAFE does hold a portion of its assets in foreign oil companies including BP and Royal Dutch Petroleum. Could this explain the seeming link? Not in it’s entirely as there is too much not in oil to explain. Could it be that rising oil prices are seen as bad for the US and investments are following suit outside of the US? Perhaps but even so, the C and S fund did rise as well, though there is certainly oil money in there as well. I am prone to lay low on stocks during the summer through Mid October but an active hurricane season threatening our domestic oil fields and refineries in the Gulf of Mexico combined with the ever present risk of unpleasantness in the Middle East, might just have me ready to hit the button on an allocation back into the I fund at a moments notice.

The third step you have to take to get rich in the stock market

This step is really important and most people just don’t get it. Listen carefully — you have to deferred, avoid, and reduce capital gains taxes to the bare minimum! Well, how do I do that you ask? The best thing to do of course is to completely avoid capital gains taxes. The only way to do that is to open a Roth IRA. The reason you avoid capital gains taxes is that you pay your income taxes first and then you never pay taxes on any profits of the money you put into your Roth IRA. If you make a lot of money though, you can’t open a Roth. In that case you need to open a Standard IRA and of course if your company matches in a 401(k) you need contribute up to the matching. In a 401(k) make sure that you only buy a no-load indexed mutual fund. Get your accounts open! Get your accounts open! Get your accounts open! I can’t overemphasize or shout this loud enough. Once you have your account open you will be motivated to start investing — if you don’t know how to trade through such an account I can teach you. Here is a key point if you trade in an individual trading account where you are subject to capital gains taxes. You have to remember that the short term capital gains tax is double the long term capital gains tax rate. That means that if you buy a stock now and then sell it in less than a year you will have to pay your regular income tax rate which is as high as 35%. On the other hand if you buy low and hold for the big multi year stock price raises your capital gains tax rate is only 15%. This is huge! Look, that means that you have to earn 20% just to overcome the hurdle when you buy and sell real fast like the get rich quick gurus want to teach you. Get your accounts open. Here is a recap. First check to see if the company you work for offers a 401(k) plan with matching and contribute up to the matching. If you work for a university than open a 403(b) plan which can be even better than the 401(k). Restrict your investing in a 401(k) or 403(b) to no load indexed mutual funds. Second, if you can save more than the matching amount your employer offers then open a Roth IRA and contribute up to the maximum. Third, if you are a really hard core saver and investor like my wife and me open an individual trading account. Fourth, open your Roth and individual trading account at an online brokerage like Ameritrade or Etrade. This insures that you won’t get an earful of manure from a stock broker who just wants to nickel and dime you out of your account. Also by trading online yourself you will learn to become a self sufficient investor — the richest kind of all!

    The trading psychology plan

And what a great analogy ‘string up’ is, because after all those months of paper trading winners are replaced with real money losses, that is exactly what you will feel like doing to yourself. The Trading Psychology Viewpoint No discussion about trading, or the consideration to begin trading, can be done without a harsh realization - the vast majority of all traders lose. It is said that the reason that most traders lose is because they are not psychologically prepared to trade, that is they are not prepared to accept financial risk for something of which they have no control over the outcome. Trading is much more of a psychological problem then a methodological one, only the traders who have first accepted this have a chance of being consistently successful traders. Without an understanding of trading psychology and the various issues that circumvent method, there will be virtually no chance to overcome the fear, confusion, and despair that can be inherent in trading. Ultimately, after a series of consecutive losses, method becomes replaced with a feeling that it is impossible to do anything right; if for no other reason than this situation, trading psychology is more critical than trading method. New Trader Scenario Consider a scenario where a trader develops a method for day trading an index future. The method gives 15 trades per day, and the trader has gotten to the point where they are able to paper trade with the following results: 9 wining trades averaging $85 each, and 6 losing trades averaging -$65 each – thus giving $375 average daily gains. The trader has achieved these results for three consecutive months; their paper trading goals have been met and it is time to start trading real money. Real money trading begins, but things quickly change. Instead of trading their method like they did when paper trading, the trader starts ‘skipping’ trades trying to pick the winners instead of accepting the 40% losers; of course, they invariably pick more losers than winners. Trying to then correct this problem, the trader decides that maybe they are entering their trades too late. So now instead of letting the setup complete and then doing the trade, the trigger is anticipated so the trade can be entered earlier - the losses get worse. With the continued losses the emotions take over: “What is wrong, why am I such a pathetic loser? Maybe it’s not my fault, maybe the method just doesn’t really work.” The problems get worse with each trade, more emotions and more loses - the trader quits trading. The trader now decides that their paper trading results weren’t really adequate to begin real money trading. They will go back to paper trading and studying again. Thoughts that are going through the trader’s mind now: “Maybe I should try different trading methods until I can eliminate those losing trades – then I will be ready to trade real money again. Really, maybe I should just quit trading altogether – maybe I am just a loser, and that’s why I can’t trade.” The Trading Psychology Plan What should be very apparent from this scenario is that the trader never traded their paper trading method plan after transitioning to real money trading. Unfortunately, the trader is unable to realize what they have done, instead their emotions first place blame on the method thinking that it really doesn’t work, and then on themselves for being “such a pathetic loser”. The final result being that the trader quits trading, and if the real underlying reasons for what has happened aren’t accepted and changed, this trader will never be able to trade real money even if their paper trading results become 100% winners, which of course is not going to happen. The trader had a trading method plan, but they did not have a trading psychology plan. They did not have a way to make the transition from fear and emotion directed trading to actually trading the method as designed. They did not have a plan to objectively access and understand their given non-method actions, and then define a 'setup' for replacing them. The trading psychology plan must begin with an honest assessment and acceptance for what really happened: the trader never traded their method plan; there is no other blame to be placed, or excuses to be made. There is nothing wrong with the trading plan, and regardless, the trader has not traded it in order to be able to make that evaluation. As well, traders cannot internalize trade loses where they lead to their viewpoint of themselves – you are not a loser because your trade is a loser. Trading Psychology Plan Components • Accept that losing will be a normal part of trading. Not only is it impossible to be perfect, it is not an objective or necessary to be a profitable trader. • Replace the focus of winning and losing with the objective of following your plan. This was not done while paper trading, as the trader had a specific profitability goal that they used to tell them when they were prepared to trade real money. They did not understand that the reason they achieved this goal was because of how they followed their plan. • Remain neutral and non-judgmental towards yourself. If profitable trading is ever going to be possible, this is mandatory. There is no way that you are going to be able to trust yourself to manage risk while you are also telling yourself that you are ‘stupid’ or a ‘pathetic loser’ each time you lose or feel that you have done something wrong. • Eliminating your emotions is not the objective; I actually do not think this is possible. Emotions are always going to enter into trading – learn to control the emotions, instead of having them control you. • Accept that emotions are a part of life; they aren’t by definition good or bad, and actually if you can shift the focus of what the emotion represents, they can be very beneficial for the trader. For instance, if I am feeling confused and that causes an emotional response or hesitation, I want to feel that emotion. This emotion becomes a warning to me that I should wait and try to find more chart-market clarity before taking a trade, something that can be very typical when markets are in congestion. • Start slowly – this may be the most important component of your plan. For instance, begin trading real money for an hour at a time, and then assess what you have done, always asking yourself the question: did I follow my plan, or did I take non-method trades. Granted, you will not be able to approximate your paper trading results as the expectancy of that plan was achieved by averaging 15 trades per day. However, not only will this help further to shift the focus from how much money did I make to did I follow my plan, it will also allow you to acclimate to the logistics of real time-real money execution, and the related initial emotions, where all of a sudden the market feels like it is moving considerably faster. By doing this you will ‘build-up’ to trading your full plan at a pace that won’t cause you to become so overwhelmed by the process, and immediately cause you to avoid what you had intended to do as fear and emotion becomes too strong. You have a great trading method and trading plan. You have profitably paper traded, and you ARE now ready to start trading real money – just be sure that you have a trading psychology plan that is as good as your trading method plan, and that you realize that neither will be of any use to you without the other.
