What parents should know about administering medicine to children

Administering medicine to a sick child can be a frustrating experience for parents, with children often resisting medication necessary to help them feel better. According to a recent survey commissioned by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a division of McNeil-PPC, Inc., and conducted by Harris Interactive, more than 65 percent of parents have experienced difficulty getting their children to take liquid suspension medication, and 62 percent of parents noted that the taste of certain medicines is their children's primary complaint. Now, a new product aims to make the medicating experience an easier one. Children's Tylenol® (acetaminophen) with Flavor Creator is the first customizable over-the-counter medicine. With four possible flavor combinations, Children's Tylenol® with Flavor Creator makes administering medicine an easier experience for parents by reducing children's attempts to avert taking medicine due to taste. Parents can create flavor combinations that match their child's taste preferences, thereby creating a better medicating process. "There are clear instructions that educate parents about the appropriate dose of medicine to administer to their child, but when children are resisting because of the taste, administering that appropriate dose can be a problem," said Dr. Tanya Remer Altmann, pediatrician and clinical instructor at the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. "This product helps parents get their children to take the medicine they need to feel better." Maureen Lipscomb has experienced the struggles over taking medication firsthand. As the mother of seven-year-old quadruplets, she struggles to meet the very different tastes of her four children. "Each one of my children is different; they all have their own likes and dislikes. It's very challenging for me to get them to take medicine when they don't like the taste. Struggling with them over taking medicine when they are sick can be upsetting to all of us, so I am always looking for ways to make giving them their medicine less stressful," said Lipscomb. "Allowing them to have a say in what the flavor of their medication will be makes medicine time less challenging because they are less likely to resist taking their medicine when they need it most." Nearly eight out of nine (85 percent) parents surveyed agree that being able to customize the flavor of their children's liquid medication based on different taste preferences would significantly improve their child's willingness to take their medicine. Each pack of Children's Tylenol® with Flavor Creator contains one bottle of Children's Tylenol® Cherry Blast Flavor Liquid Suspension and 20 packets of sugar-free crystals in four different flavors: bubblegum, chocolate, apple and strawberry, to create great-tasting flavor combinations. As always, medication should be kept out of reach of children and administered by an adult.

    What s in your toothpaste

Don’t Be Poisoned With Your Sparkling White Teeth Of course, every one of us desires to have a charming smile with our teeth sparkling. That is why we sometimes try almost all brands and all kinds of toothpaste just to know which one will give us the best results. There is actually no harm in doing that. However, we must be aware that this product that we use everyday may cause harm to our body a well. One of the main ingredients of toothpaste is fluoride. However, some toothpastes contain huge amounts of this chemical. Excessive fluoride inside our system can cause several problems like chronic fatigue, arthritis, rheumatism, constipation, and maybe cancer. According to the World Health Organization and the US Environmental Protection Agency, fluoride is considered to be an unclassifiable carcinogen. There are also other chemicals found in toothpastes that are, sometimes, not even listed in the tube. Chemicals in toothpaste, when we use them, get absorbed by our teeth and gums. And since there are times that we swallow toothpaste along with our saliva, these chemicals reach some parts of our gastro intestinal tract as well. These chemicals can cause stiffness in the joints and muscles all over our body because they are being poisoned by these elements. Our nerves can also be affected which can cause spasms and pain. Some toothpastes claim to have formula against sensitive teeth to prevent pain in the gums and teeth. The reason why these can prevent the pain is the manufacturers include pain killers in these toothpastes. As people use them everyday, the nerves in the mouth slowly dies as they get poisoned by these chemicals. Eventually, it will also spread to all the nerves in our body. Regular ingestion of these harmful chemicals from toothpastes can also cause our breathing to be shallow. Our blood can get poisoned and makes our heart beat go wild. This poisoning with toothpaste chemicals can cause muscle cramps in different body parts. And since it affects the blood and the heart, there is a possibility of a heart malfunction in the future. There are some toothpaste that also prevent gum bleeding. This is possible because of blood-clotting chemicals that are put into these products. However, these agents not only can stop the bleeding in gums, but can also develop blood clots which can lead to strokes and heart attacks. Depression and restlessness can also be the side effects of these chemicals in toothpaste. Eventually, the different poisoning effects in the use of regular commercial toothpaste may lead to different kinds of AIDS depending on the toxicity produced by these chemicals. One kind of chemical that was found in some toothpaste is the sodium laurel sulfate or the SLS. This chemical has a bad effect on our immune system. It can cause skin inflammation and separation of the layers, as stated in the Journal of the American College of Toxicology in 1983. SLS can also lead to permanent eye impairment according to Dr. Keith Green of the Medical College of Georgia. Though these effects may not be seen right away, it is the long-term effect of these chemicals in our body that is really disturbing. And the fact that these products are part of our daily lives, we may be at a huge risk to these side effects without knowing it. Alternatives: Just like other products, there are always alternatives to these things that we are already used to. We just have to learn to explore and search for much safer products in your favorite grocery store. There are several toothpaste now available in the market that are all natural. Some of them are made up of fruit extracts and essential oils. These kinds of organic toothpaste do not contain sodium fluoride in them and other toxic chemicals found in the regular ones. Though they are made from different ingredients than the regular ones, do not discount them for their quality. These organic toothpaste also can whiten your teeth, freshen your breath, and eliminate teeth and gums sensitivity. You can also combine a little gel with a drop of miracle ii soap for a wonderful toothpaste.

What s the deal with ear wax

There are many things in life that I don't understand. I don't understand why people have such an addiction to the television, I don't understand why some people are afraid to fly, and I don't understand why anyone would choose to eat asparagas. Ear wax is another small thing in life that I don't really understand. I've heard people say that ear wax is for our good, that it is protection for our bodies and that it is natural to have, but I still cannot understand why ear wax really exists or how I am supposed to feel about it. Quite honestly, I am a little weirded out by ear wax. I think it is sort of gross and I cannot stand finding any ear wax in my ears. My wife is a nurse, so I have had many conversations with her about ear wax and about how I should be dealing with it. She always laughs at me and tells me that I am making a really big deal out of something that is not supposed to be a big deal at all. She tells me that all I need to do is clean my ears out consistently and I won't have a problem with ear wax. I guess my problem is that I hate having ear wax, but I also hate having to clean my ears. My wife tried this new method with me a few months ago where she burned a special candle in my ear that was supposed to suck up all of the ear wax that my ears contained. I was very frightful going into it, but it actually turned out great. It felt weird having the end of a candle stuck in my ear and knowing that a flame was burning the candle down. I couldn't really feel anything happening except that the inside of my ear felt really warm. When it finished, my wife showed me how much ear wax that the candle had collected. I was completely disgusted even though I knew that it was very normal. If you have questions about ear wax, ask your doctor or do a little research. There is much more to be learned about ear wax than you would imagine. I have become quite fascinated with the reasons why we have ear wax and with the most healthy ways of dealing with it. I have learned that ear wax really is a protection for us and that far too many people over clean when it comes to their ears.

What should we do after bariatric surgery

After your bariatric surgery you will be on a very limited diet. Your diet may only include broth, water, jello and other clear liquids for what can seem like a long time. Sometimes it can take up to two weeks before you are able to handle liquids such as shakes, or instant breakfast drinks. This probably due to the major changes that have been made to your digestive tract. As your stomach and intestinal systems are healing from the surgery you won’t be very hungry and you will even find that the things you used to like are not longer appetizing to your taste buds. Many patients have reported that they have trouble finding a liquid that is palatable to drink. As its extremely important to make sure you have something to drink in order to prevent dehydration this can be a problem. Often you can experiment with a variety of drinks and flavorings to find something that you like or can tolerate until you are fully healed. Some find that they can only drink water that’s cold or at room temperature for about two months at which point they are able to try flavored fruit drinks. You may also find that many of the foods you once like are no longer appetizing, which may be considered a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view. Some find that fats and carbs are intolerable, especially as in some patients even the slightest amount can cause ‘dumping syndrome.’ Others complain that they can’t handle salads and veggies as well. This is partly because of the fiber in the veggies but also the raw veggies may be hard on your esophagus and new delicate stomach. Sometimes you can start with a salad of plain lettuce coated in an oil and gradually adding one veggie at a time. Be sure to chew very thouroughly.

What the nutritionists have to say about colon cleansing

If you have reason to suspect your colon is not working properly, you are most likely right. You're undoubtedly aware of any ongoing problems with constipation, for example. You know when your intestines feel bloated or achy. When there is a general malaise that you sense comes from these problems. Did you know that proper colon cleansing can not only alleviate chronic constipation, but headaches, ulcerative colitis and hemorrhoids? Did you know colon cleansing can ultimately help prevent cancer? Most doctors won't tell you about these facts because they simply don't know them. The AMA is not nutritionist-oriented, it is disease-oriented. A good preventative plan for colon cleansing and the overall health of your digestive tract, then, is called for. And whose responsibility is it? Yours! Some of the suggestions a doctor is liable to make will overlap with those of the nutritionist, however. For example, drinking lots of water and doing at least 20 minutes of exercise at least three times a week are standard. Bulk-producing fiber supplements like psyllium husks are also standard to help cleanse the colon and lower bowel. Nutritionists go deeper. They advocate improving our diets as well as more intense methods of colon cleansing. The nutritionists tell us over and over to stop eating junk. Do you listen? Why don’t we as a population listen to what these nutritionists have to say? Ridding our diets of processed foods, chemicals, sugar and hydrogenated fats is only the tip of the iceberg. To really get it right requires some extended research. Colonic irrigation and oxygen-based colon cleansers can actually help melt impacted built-up wastes and carry them away. These processes can actually cleanse your whole system. When all is said and done, it's your body, your colon… and your life…always be careful what you put into your body.

What to do when infected with contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a physical reaction of the skin to certain allergens or substances that potently cause allergies or reactions. The skin infection is brought about by the effects on the skin of certain irritants. There are basically four kinds or classifications of contact dermatitis that are usually diagnosed by doctors and dermatologists. These are irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), photocontact dermatitis (PCD) and contact urticaria. Those types or classification of contact dermatitis can be hardly identified and distinguished by ordinary people, but the nature and cause of the skin infection can be determined through them. A trivial fact about contact dermatitis is that in the United States, most recorded and diagnosed cases occur more in adults than children and the elderly. Causes of contact dermatitis Various allergens or allergy-causing substances can be cited for the onset of contact dermatitis. But reported cases of such skin infection points out to several factors or things that trigger the reaction. The most common sources of contact dermatitis allergens are soaps and perfumes. It is because the use of such substances is somehow inevitable that make the problem hard to contain. Contact dermatitis can also be caused by your skin’s reaction to drool, to detergents, to several allergy-causing foods and to lotions especially those with harsh ingredients. Some plants are also identified to produce enzymes that may lead to the onset of contact dermatitis. Among these plants are poison ivy. There are also about 3,000 chemicals that are identified to cause contact dermatitis. Among them are those that are based on common metals like mercury, chrome and nickel. Some cosmetics can also irritate the skin and trigger the appearance of contact dermatitis manifestation in the skin. Permanent hair dyes, eye shadows, lipstick, clothing dyes, sunscreens and nail polishes are the identified cosmetic lines that cause such skin infection. Manifestations of contact dermatitis Several symptoms are pointed to the onset of contact dermatitis. However, it should be noted that for different individuals, the symptoms may vary. To be sure, further advice and check up from a dermatologist should be obtained. Contact dermatitis occurs when there is swelling or mild redness in the skin. The appearance of the infected spot could clearly not be mistaken for common insect bites. There is also blistering in the affected skin area, as well as itching. It is surely contact dermatitis when there is a temporary thickening or scaling in the infected skin portion. Treatment and prevention To treat contact dermatitis, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology advises people diagnosed that have the skin infection to do the following simple, yet effective remedies. - Wash thoroughly the infected skin part with soap and ample water. Immediately do this at the initial appearance of symptoms. - Throw away or carefully wash all clothing and objects that have come into contact or touched plants or chemicals that contain contact dermatitis allergens. - Relieve and soothe skin inflammation or the infected part with a cold compress especially if the blisters break or crack. - If the symptoms show severity, do not hesitate to consult a physician or dermatologist. Baths using lukewarm water are also known to help soothe and rapidly control the skin infection. As for the prevention, the best way is to avoid all identified allergens.

What to look for in anti snoring devices

If you, or someone that you know, suffers from snoring, then you are probably looking for a way to cure it. While the actual causes of snoring vary from obesity, sleeping on the back, allergies and more, the majority of sufferers simply want to know how to correct the problem rather than what caused it. Many anti-snoring devices are designed to help sufferers stop snoring and start resting. Natural snoring remedies including sleeping on your side, ridding your home of allergens, losing weight if recommended, etc. If none of these remedies seem to work, many sufferers immediately turn to a variety of surgical procedures for their snoring solution. However, these types of procedures are invasive, uncomfortable and may not be necessary in all cases. Before turning to surgery, consider the use of anti-snoring devices. With the retail market being what it is, there are many anti-snoring devices that claim to solve this problem or cure that one but, when looking for legitimate anti-snoring devices, always look for something that has either been directly recommended by your doctor or is labeled as being doctor recommended. This is very important in identifying the quality anti-snoring devices from the rest of the pack so to speak. One anti-snoring device, which is currently available, is known as the Sleep Genie. This product, as it is fittingly titled, typically works it’s magic during the first use. The product provides a comfortable support for the jaw while allowing the mouth to remain closed through the night. Have you ever tried to snore with your mouth closed? Exactly. No luck, right? That is why the Sleep Genie has been identified as being doctor recommended. It provides a medicine-free, non surgical way to end snoring. If the sufferer continues to have problems even after using quality anti-snoring devices, a physician may need to look for the possibility of sleep apnea. This is a very serious medical condition which, if left untreated, can lead to other health problems. With sleep apnea, the snoring sufferer often stops breathing completely throughout the night and is therefore at risk for various health problems. A proper diagnosis for sleep apnea can only be made by a physician. This article is intended for informational purposes only. It should not be used as, or in place of, professional medical advice. Before beginning any treatment for snoring, please consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and remedy.

What to look for when evaluating medicare prescription drug plan options the three c s of medicare prescription drug coverage

People with Medicare can start saving money by enrolling in the government's prescription drug plan, and with open enrollment running through May 15, 2006, there is still time to save. "This is the most significant change to Medicare since the program's inception, and it will offer people with Medicare more choices than ever before," said Scott Latimer, M. D., Central and North Florida Market President for Senior Products at Humana, one of the nation's leading private sector Medicare insurers. "In order to select the plan that best meets their needs, beneficiaries will need to carefully evaluate their options prior to enrolling." When choosing a plan, people with Medicare and their family members and friends involved in the process need to factor three areas into their decision: affordable cost, plan coverage of required drugs and services and ease of obtaining medications. Cost While some plans have a monthly premium, there are Medicare Advantage plans that provide Parts A and B medical coverage and include Part D drug coverage as a built-in benefit without an additional monthly premium cost. Plans also have varying coverage of the coverage gap, which is commonly referred to as the "doughnut hole." Some plans offer more choices than others, including $0 deductible options, varying co-payment levels and possibly generic drug coverage through the gap. Additionally, people with Medicare will also pay part of the cost for prescriptions, which varies depending on the drug plan chosen. Coverage Each Medicare drug plan has a list of the prescription drugs it covers. When comparing plans, beneficiaries need to find plans that cover all or most of the drugs they take. Many plans may also offer lower-cost generics. Of course, insurance plans can change the list of drugs they coverpanies must provide at least 60 days' notice before making a coverage change. Beneficiaries can then evaluate other options and speak to their doctors about the possibility of switching to an alternate drug that is on the plan or to a generic medication. Convenience All private insurers offering prescription drug coverage have pharmacy networks. These include both national pharmacies such as Wal-Mart, Rite Aid and CVS and non-chain independent pharmacies. Mail-order drug delivery services may also be an option, and may be particularly beneficial for people who take multiple medications daily. People should speak with their pharmacist about the plan they are considering. It is important to know if that pharmacy will be part of that preferred network. Web-based tools can help calculate prescription drug costs by plan, determine all out-of-pocket costs and even allow online enrollment.

What yeast infection treatments are available

Yeast infection treatments can be administered at home with prescription medication or potentially after recommendations from people who have experienced it. Treatment can take effect within a week. If your infection is not too severe, you can continue with your home treatment, but if you are experiencing heavy infections, it is important to consult your doctor. There might be some symptoms that means your particular infection is not appropriate for self-treatment or medication. You can buy yeast infection treatments over the counter (OTC) in drugstores without a prescription from the doctor. Some examples of common treatments are: Miconazole, Tioconazole, Butoconazole and Clotrimazole. These medications are known as the azole treatments, which block the production of ergosterol. Ergosterol is present in yeast cell walls. In the absence of ergosterol, the yeast cell wall deteriorates and the yeast cell dies. Azole treatments are proven safe to use and are known to effectively fight probable symptoms of yeast infection. Nystatin and amphotericin B. are good treatments, which can be found in Polyene antifungals. Nystatin is known to be effective for superficial candidal infections and also for thrush while amphotericin B is reserved for more serious cases of fungal infection. These works by attacking ergosterol in the yeast cell wall. These treatments are applied by topically over a period of 1-7 days, but always read the labels carefully for the correct application procedure. You should watch carefully in case irritation occurs. If it does, you should discontinue using the medication immediately. Pregnant women are not advised to use these medications without prescription from their doctors. Other medical treatments include pills, creams, troches, lotions and vaginal depositories. To know the right and safe option, you should always seek the advice of your doctor. OTC products are useful in treating vaginal yeast infections. They tend to be made up of four active ingredients that stop the spread of yeast infection. These drugs are part of the anti-fungal family, which works actively to stop and break down the cell wall of the Candida and bacteria. OTC treatments have been approved by the FDA to effectively stop forms of yeast infection, however, it is useful to be aware that antibiotics may disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria present in the vagina and intestine, which may lead to diarrhea, vaginitis and constipation. It is important to carefully understand and take seriously yeast infection treatment. If it is your first time visiting your doctor regarding a yeast infection, you should be open and candid with the symptoms that you have as this will help the doctor determine if your infection is manageable or needs more serious treatments. When the doctor explains the effects and how the treatments can be handled properly, you should listen closely so that you can apply the treatment effectively. The use of vaginal suppositories and creams need the right dosage as if used incorrectly your infection may get worse.

What you can do when your feet catch fire part 1

Copyright 2006 John Young His toes were on fire. Trying to ignore the searing pain in his right foot propped against the accelerator, Pete gritted his teeth and focused on the heavy rush hour traffic. The tingling in his toes had begun about a year ago, and he had had no idea what was causing it and it kept worsening. Finally, he mentioned it to his coworkers, some of whom thought it might be gangrene. Panicked, he went to the doctor who diagnosed it as "Peripheral Neuropathy", and checked his blood sugar levels. Dr. Hammond explained that Peripheral Neuropathy was usually caused by nerve deterioration in the extremities, and began with a tingling sensation in the toes or fingers. The "wiring" in his body had become damaged, and was now transmitting sensations that weren't there. He prescribed Neurontin®, a drug originally developed to control seizures, but had been discovered to work as a "pain manager" in the condition of Peripheral Neuropathy. "It's not a cure," he said. "We have no idea how it works. But it'll reduce the pain and keep you functional" Pete didn't like the words "it'll keep you functional." The phrase definitely had an ominous ring to it. He took Neurontin® faithfully according to prescription, and for awhile it worked, but it wasn't too long before he began to see what Dr. Hammond was alluding too. The painful sensations increased, and it seemed like it was getting more difficult for the drug to handle them. Then, one day, he forgot to take his medicine, and he vowed he would never do it again. Without the pain manager, the pain level ramped up several orders of magnitude, and Pete discovered that the full extent of his condition had been masked by the drug. Neuropathy had taken over half of his foot. Sledgehammers slammed against his feet. Hot blowtorches seared his toes. Hot rocks were jammed inside the soles of his feet. Once ... worst of all ... a white hot band saw tried to cut his foot half off. Now he knew he was now entirely dependent on the Neurontin®. Without it, he couldn't endure the pain... And he almost couldn't walk at all. THERE'S DAMAGE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE So what do we mean by the term "Peripheral Neuropathy"? The nervous system of the human body is broadly divided into the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The former consists of the brain and spinal chord, whereas the latter is divided into the Somatic and Autonomic Nervous Systems. Peripheral Neuropathy affects the PNS, and can result in nerve damage to the Somatic or Autonomic Systems. Translated, Neuropathy can develop not only in the feet or hands, but in the nerves regulating the lungs, heart, digestive and sexual organs. In other words, it can develop anywhere and have very serious and far reaching consequences to the body. It can take the form of: -- Polyneuropathy (Peripheral nerves throughout the body) -- Autonomic Neuropathy (the cardiovascular system, digestive tract, bladder, or genitals) The painful sensations of Polyneuropathy, burning, itching, "electric shock", or hammering, may develop in the feet and legs either gradually or suddenly. You may or may not get a warning before they appear. THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT Today, there are three classes of medication on the market that can treat the pain resulting from neuropathic nerve damage: -- tricyclic antidepressants such as Amiriptyline (Elavil®) -- anticonvulsants such as Gabapentine(Neurontin®) and Pregabilin (Lyrica®) -- Serotonin and Norepenephrin reuptake inhibitors such as Duloxeten (Cymbalta®) Blocking uptake of neurotransmitters or blocking pathways in the spinal chord prevent pain signals from reaching the brain. Sodium and Calcium channels may also be blocked to keep the brain from registering pain from "cross talking" neurons. None of the medicines can be thought of as a "cure", and if the causes of Neuropathy are not addressed, it will continue to progress. So, if Medical Science has thrown three balls at us and none of them are a "cure", is that it? Are we stuck with merely "managing the pain" and hoping we don't end up down the line with a foot amputation? In Part II of this series, Pete will learn more…

What you must know about cataract surgery

If you have a cataract it means the natural lens in your eye is cloudy. In a cataract operation your surgeon will remove the cloudy lens and put an artificial clear lens in its place. Your lens sits behind the coloured part of your eye (the iris) and helps you to see things in focus. When you look at something, light comes into your eye through the hole in the centre (the pupil) and passes through the lens to the back of the eyeball (the retina). The light is then changed into nerve signals that travel to your brain. Your brain tells you what the image is. If the lens is cloudy, the image on the back of the eye will be blurred. It’s rather like looking through a dirty windscreen or frosted glass. Different parts of the lens can become cloudymonly cataracts begin as clouding around the edges of the lens. You may notice that you get a lot of glare or a ‘halo’ effect around bright lights, or when the sun is low in the sky. If you drive you might find oncoming headlights more difficult to cope with than before. Cataracts can also affect the middle of the lens, which makes your vision foggy. As the cataract grows:your sight becomes blurry;you may have double vision;you may find it hard to tell the difference between some colours, especially shades of blue;you may see ‘halo’ effects around lights, especially at night. Cataracts are common. About a third of people aged over 65 have cataracts in one or both eyes. Getting older and exposure to bright sunlight are the main reasons people get cataracts. Having diabetes, smoking and drinking too much alcohol may also increase your risk of cataracts. A cataract operation can:help you see better and stop your poor sight interfering with your life. Not everyone with a cataract needs an operation. Doctors usually suggest the operation when your cataract interferes with your daily life rather than when your eyesight reaches a particular score on a sight test. Your cataract may mean you can’t see well enough to read, work, play a sport, go shopping or drive a car. Some people manage with their cataract for longer than others because their poorer sight does not affect them much. For example, a person who loves bird-watching may decide they need treatment before a person whose main hobby is listening to music. In the past, people were advised that their cataract had to be ‘ripe’ (very bad) before it was worth having an operation. This is because cataract surgery was a big operation that took a long time to recover from, and the artificial lenses used then were not very good. Now, with safer, quicker operations, cataracts are generally removed earlier, before they cause serious problems. And modern lenses are better. Sometimes a cataract should be removed even if it does not cause problems with your sight. This is because there is another eye problem that needs treating and the cataract is in the way. Examples of other eye problems are diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. They are problems with the blood vessels in the eye. If you have cataracts in both eyes, it’s normal to do them one eye at a time, usually a couple of months or more apart. This is because the treated eye can be sore and needs to settle down for a while. A cataract operation usually lasts about 10 minutes to 20 minutes. You should be able to go home the same day. You may know someone who has stayed overnight after their cataract operation. People usually only stay in hospital if they have problems after their operation, if they have other eye diseases (glaucoma, for example) or other medical problems that doctors need to check. For most people it’s as safe to be at home as it is to stay in hospital, and most people prefer to be in familiar surroundings. At hospitals that are very experienced in doing cataract surgery, you may be in and out of the hospital within 90 minutes.

What you need to know about tummy tuck surgery

Tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty is a clinical procedure to drown the excess fat and skin accumulated around your lower abdomen, tighten your loose abdomen muscles and reposition your naval. Nowadays, more and more individuals are considering a tummy tuck surgery to get back into shape within weeks. The operation is usually performed after administering general anesthesia; a standard tummy tuck surgery is like all other surgeries and normally takes four to five hours. Mostly women opt for a tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy, as pregnancy leaves women with a slightly disfigured stomach caused by accumulation of excess fat around the lower abdomen which also stretches the skin and loosens up the abdominal muscles. Sometimes lack of exercise and abnormal eating habits also is the reason for accumulation of fat around the lower abs, even men may require a tummy tuck surgery because of lack of exercise or irregular eating habits. A tummy tuck surgery can be simple or more complicated than regular surgical procedures depending upon a particular case. After administering dose of anesthesia the surgeon makes two incisions, first to loosen the area around the naval and the second to lift the naval free from the tissues. In the next step of the tummy tuck surgery the skin is lifted up to expose the abdominal muscles. The muscles are then stitched into a new position giving the patient a new waistline. After that, the skin is stretched back, excess skin removed and stitched again. Finally the surgeons create a new naval as the old one would be far too down. After the tummy tuck surgery most patents don’t need continual medical attention and are relieved from the hospital while some have to stay overnight or for a day or two more. The operation leaves a swollen and painful abdomen for the first couple of weeks, you’ll need pain relievers for the same Unless you have strong abdomen you’ll need two to four weeks before you can get back to work and the scars may take six to nine months to completely disappear.

What you need to know before your knee replacement surgery

Knee Replacement is pretty scary, but you can do it, especially if you are prepared! After you and your Doctor have decided you need your knee replaced, it’s time to make preparations. First and foremost, check with your insurance company to make sure which benefits you have. Find out specifically how long they will allow you to stay in the hospital. Many insurance companies will make you leave the on the fourth day after the operation and they may send you to a “rehabilitation facility”, which in their jargon could mean a nursing home. In my experience, I was transferred to the nursing home on a Friday. This meant I would not be evaluated by their visiting physical therapist until Monday. Because of that, I declined from a 90 degree bend in my new knee to a 70 degree bend, in just three days. All my rehab in the hospital had just gone down the drain and I had to start all over again. Just so you know, you will be working towards a 125 degree bend after the Knee Replacement Surgery. It is very important to know how the insurance company will deal with you before, during and after the knee surgery. Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions: * Find out with whom you are speaking, their position and their extension number. * I want to know what benefits I have for a total Knee Replacement. * Do I have skilled Physical Therapy benefits in the hospital where the surgery takes place for the Knee Replacement? Yes or No? If yes, what are they? * Do I have Rehabilitation benefits for the Knee Replacement? Yes or No? If yes, what are they? Where may I go for the services? * Do I have Rehabilitation equipment and supplies covered for the Knee Replacement? Yes or No? If yes, what are they? Is there a co-pay? * Do I have ongoing outpatient therapy benefits for after the Knee Replacement? Yes or No? If yes, what are they? Where may I go for services? * Do I have home therapy benefits after the Knee Replacement? Yes or No? If yes, what are they? Which Home Health agencies may I use after the Knee Replacement? To maintain your independence at home, after your Knee Replacement Surgery, buy a bar refrigerator that will go on a table next to your bed. This will be invaluable when you do come home. Stock it with water, sodas, milk, Jell-O’s and individual pudding snacks. Fresh fruit is also a good snack. Purchase the 2 oz boxes of cereals and stack them beside the refrigerator. Put a large plastic drinking cup next to the bed and weight it with a golf ball, which will hold plastic utensils, knives, forks and spoons (the golf ball keeps it from tipping over). Use a plastic bowl for the cereal and throw it away when you’re done. Bumblebee Tuna makes an individual lunch kit that comes pre-made with crackers and a little wooden spoon. These little things will help you feel independent by being able to get breakfast, snacks and an occasional lunch on your own. It also gives your care giver a little break. I found that there were some days that I had no appetite due to pain and/or medication so I kept a stock of Slim Fast or Boost in the refrigerator for basic nutrition. If you smoke, now is the time to stop or at least cut down. Smoking constricts your blood vessels which is not a good thing when you’re going in for major surgery. If you tend to be a little over weight try to lose a few pounds. A little less weight on a new knee joint means a little less pain. Okay, no more preaching. Line up the people that will be helping you after your Knee Replacement Surgery and, believe me, you will need them. If you can afford it, hire someone to come in for 4-6 hours a day. They will help you get out of bed, shower and get dressed. They prepare your meals, help you with your therapy exercises, keep you company and give your spouse or significant other, a break. Interview them now and let them know what your timing is. Your church would be a good place to find someone, or if you live near a retirement community, many times they have companions of their own that are looking for some extra income. This isn’t essential but I think wise. Donate two pints of your own blood in case of an emergency. Make sure that this is completed at least a week before the surgery. You have to donate one pint per week. If you are taking antibiotics wait five days before giving blood. The blood bank will give you a card with the unit number on it that you present upon admission to the hospital. You will need Grab Bars put into your shower/tub (don’t use your towel bars). Put them in before you have the surgery, installation is not that difficult and you will be grateful for the assistance over the next couple of months. This is a major safety issue. Balance will be tough after your Knee Replacement Surgery especially the first couple of weeks. You should buy a shower stool so you can sit while bathing. Your doctor may supply you with a cast protector to keep your new knee dry. Purchase three rubber mats, one for in the shower/tub and the other two to be lined up parallel outside the shower/tub. You do not want to slip on a wet bathroom floor. There is a product; a disposable body wash cloth, available that you can use to bathe in your bed. They can be placed in the microwave to be heated up and you can use them on days that you just can’t face the shower. They come in packs of eight. While they say to use all eight for one bathing I found that four were sufficient. Just close up the remaining four and use save them for the next time. You will need a pair of slippers that cover the entire foot with a non skid bottom, flip flops are just too dangerous. You will also need a pair of lace up shoes for stability. Some other items that you may need are: * TV with Remote Control * Telephone/emergency numbers * A night light for the bathroom * Handi-wipes * Bedside Commode/Toilet paper * Tissues * Dental floss, toothbrush, toothpaste * Bell to ring for assistance Another suggestion is to clear all the pathways in your home. Scatter rugs and cords are often the cause of falls, so are pillows and magazine. Remove articles from around the bed and chairs. Keep your pets under control. A dozing cat or a playful puppy in the wrong area can cause accidents. Please see my other article on what you need to know about the day of knee replacement surgery and your rehabilitation. What you should consider before taking ambien

Ambien, a prescription drug, is the brand name for zolpidem that is used to help treat insomnia. Ambien is a sleeping pill in a specific classification of drugs known as hypnotics or sedatives. Studies show that insomnia is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in your brain. Ambien works to induce relaxation and sleep in the patient. It is usually prescribed to those who have sleep problems such as inability to sleep, waking too early or waking several times during the night. Generally, Ambien is only prescribed for use seven to ten days. Long-term use is not recommended. The use of Ambien should be closely monitored by a physician. There are some things to take into consideration when taking Ambien. First, it is important that the drug be taken exactly as your doctor has directed. It should also be taken with a full glass of water and only take right before bedtime. Since the drug works relatively fast, it is important that you do not take it until just before you get into bed for the night. It quickly makes you drowsy and you could hurt yourself by falling. Ambien should also be taken only if you are able to devote at least eight hours to sleep. Otherwise, you will still be drowsy upon waking and will be defeating the purpose of taking the medication. If you are taking Ambien for prolonged periods, such as over two weeks, you should not abruptly stop taking it. If you do, you may begin to experience withdrawal symptoms. If you have a history of kidney or liver disease or have any type of respiratory disease such as bronchitis, asthma or emphysema, you should let your doctor know prior to taking Ambien. Some of the side effects that could occur when taking Ambien follow in the next paragraph. For those who are 60 years old or older, you carry a higher risk of experiencing these side effects. Some potential side effects of Ambien include drowsiness, headache, clumsiness or dizziness. You could experience nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or constipation as well. Depression, pain or aches in the muscle, abnormal or vivid dreams or memory loss could also occur as a result taking Ambien. More serious side affects could include an allergic reaction resulting in breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, tongue or lips or closing of the throat. Abnormal behavior, confusion or hallucinations are also serious side effects of Ambien. When taking Ambien, it should not be mixed with any other drugs, prescription or over the counter drugs that could cause drowsiness. Ambien is extremely habit forming and should be used with extreme caution. Talk to your physician before stopping this medication.

What you should know about teeth whitening

So what is teeth whitening really all about? The following report includes some fascinating information about teeth whitening--info you can use, not just the old stuff they used to tell you. Tooth bleaching, also known as teeth whitening, is a common procedure in general dentistry but most especially in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Many people consider white teeth to be an attractive feature of a smile. A child's deciduous teeth are generally whiter than the adult teeth that follow. As a person ages the adult teeth often increase in value--that is to say, they become darker. This darkening is due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes less porous. Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, foodstuffs and tobacco. As white teeth are subconsciously associated with youth, they have become desirable. This has been made more apparent with the spread of American culture worldwide, where an especially white smile is coined a "Hollywood smile." The procedure to bleach teeth uses oxidising agents such as hydrogen peroxide to lighten the shade of the tooth. The oxidising agent penetrates the porosities in the rod-like crystal structure of enamel and oxidises interprismatic stain deposits; over a period of time, the dentine layer, lying underneath the enamel, is also bleached. There are two main methods of bleaching. The first involves applying a high concentration of oxidising agent for a short period of time, which is the so-called office bleach. This produces quick results but risks chemical burns to the soft tissues. Therefore, most in-office bleaching procedures use a light-cured protective layer that is carefully painted on the gums and papilla (the tips of the gums between the teeth). The bleaching agent is either carbamide peroxide, which breaks down in the mouth to form hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide itself. The bleaching gel typically contains up to 35% hydrogen peroxide equivalent. The alternative method involves using a thin mouthguard or strip to hold a low concentration of oxidising agent next to the teeth for as long as several hours a day for a period of 5 to 14 days. This is known as take-home or over-the-counter bleaching. This is a slower process but has fewer risks to the soft tissues. The bleaching agent is typically less than 10% hydrogen peroxide equivalent. A typical course of bleaching can produce dramatic improvements in the cosmetic appearance of most stained teeth; however, some stains do not respond to bleaching. Tetracycline staining may require prolonged bleaching, as it takes longer for the bleach to reach the dentine layer. White-spot decalcifications may also be highlighted and become more noticeable. Recently, efforts have been made to accelerate the bleaching process by the use of light. Studies have shown varying results as to the efficacy of light-activated bleaching. Side effects of tooth bleaching include chemical burns (if a high-concentration oxidizing agent contacts unprotected tissues, which may bleach or discolor mucous membranes), sensitive teeth, and overbleaching (known in the profession as "fridge-door teeth"). Rebound, or teeth losing the bleached effect and darkening, is also an issue, with some studies showing the rebound effect over 30 days. A recent study by Kugel et al has shown that as much as 4 shades of lightness can be lost over 30 days with light-activated/office bleaching.
