Two things you do not know about lasik eye surgery

The eye can be examined with relative ease as to both its function and its structure. A functional examination includes the ability to move in the orbit and the reaction of the pupil to light and accommodation. The function of the eye may be tested in several ways. The patient may be asked to identify illuminated letter or objects of varying sizes on what is known as the Snellen chart. Conversely, the examination of the structural part of the eye may be made in several ways. Tension within the eyeball is measured by a “tonometer.” In certain diseases, especially in glaucoma, the tension in the eyeball is increased markedly. However, it should be well remembered that a patient with an eye problem might have other problems as well. Often other physical conditions are primary and affect the eye as a consequence. The appearance of the eye can alert the patient and the physician to difficulties in some disturbances of other parts of the body even before other symptoms present themselves. Consequently, one’s dependence on sight is emphasized when one faces a temporary or possible permanent loss of this vital sense. Hence, when corrective measures are sought, certain forms of vision correction such as contact lenses or eyeglasses are prescribed. On the other hand, some people are bothered with the fact that they have some framed lenses or contact lenses in front of their eyes. For this reason, advanced surgical operations were established to encourage decreased utilization of contact lenses or glasses. One of which is the now popular LASIK eye surgery. Basically, LASIK eye surgery is the short term for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.” Like its tangible counterpart, LASIK eye surgery is another form of vision correction. The only difference is that with this type of surgery, one’s vision is corrected permanently. With LASIK eye surgery, the refractive errors in the cornea are permanently transformed. This can be done using an “excimer laser.” The main purpose of this surgery is to create a threadlike, rounded “flap” in the cornea using a blade known as “microkeratome.” In a series of unfolding and laser processing, the cornea is finally reformed, allowing better the eye to direct more light into the retina. Popularity vs. Disadvantages Amidst the growing popularity of LASIK eye surgery, there are still disadvantages that people must know. Probably, the main reason why this type of eye surgery has become well accepted is because most of its cases had been successful. However, in spite of its success, there are still some drawbacks. Here is the list: 1. It is an operation applied to the most sensitive part of the eye Because LASIK eye surgery involves the operation of the retina, which is one of the most sensitive portions of the eye, most people say that the operation can be very risky. In other words, a simple error could almost cause an individual’s lifetime blindness. Hence, it is important to consider many factors before deciding whether LASIK eye surgery is the right corrective measure one has to undergo. 2. It is not a perfect procedure LASIK eye surgery may correct your vision but it does not necessarily mean that it can give you a perfect vision. Even if statistical reports show that 70% of the patients may have 20/20 vision, this does not necessarily mean they have ideal vision as well. Given all these things, it can be deduced that, in spite of the popularity of the operation, LASIK may not always be the ideal eye surgery the way most people view it

Two things you should know before you have surgery

There’s not much that is scarier or more confusing than having your doctor tell you need surgery. You might have gone to see the doctor because you were having some pain in your belly. He ordered a test called an ultra sound of the abdomen. You went to the radiology department and a technician rubbed a wand like instrument over your mid section which revealed that you have stones in your gall bladder. Is this an emergency? It could develop into one over the course of time. Gall stones can cause horrible pain, necessitating a trip to the emergency room. They can block ducts that carry important enzymes to your digestive system. But gall stones may also be treated homeopathically in some cases, which you won’t hear from your surgeon. A surgeon may tell you that it would easier to operate on your gall bladder before it becomes infected, inflamed, or even gangrenous. He may tell you that done laparscopically; gall bladder surgery is as safe as surgery can be. But there are risks involved, which we will talk about later. So what does all this mean? First of all, what brought you to the doctor in the first place? Secondly, is the first time you have complained of the problem? Or is it ongoing? How is this problem affecting your life? Before we talk too much about making the decision to have surgery, let’s discuss some of the important questions you should ask before signing the consent. The first thing you should know than is…. Is it absolutely necessary that I have this surgery? Will I lose my life or limb if I don’t have it? Will the quality of my life deteriorate if I don’t have it? As in the gall bladder discussion, there are variables that come into play when making the decision to consent to surgery. First of all, what can go wrong if I decide to go to the operating room? Again, using Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery as our example, it is a commonly performed operation. In the hands of an unskilled laparscopist, lot’s can go wrong. But problems are encountered by even the most skilled of surgeons. Unusual anatomy of the patient is a condition which is usually not detectable until the patient is on the table, under anesthesia. We are similar inside as human beings, but there are variations. The most crucial procedure in the operation is the clipping and cutting of the cystic duct and cystic artery. These structures carry blood and bile to the gall bladder. Easy, right? Just two little structures. But the truth is, if the cystic duct is cut too far away from the gall bladder, into the common duct, a very unpleasant, life threatening situation can occur which will require additional extensive surgery. What can go wrong if I decide NOT to have the surgery? Not having an infected gall bladder removed can lead to peritonitis, even death if left untreated. But a healthy gall bladder should be left in place. Are the risks involved for the surgery you are contemplating having worth risking your life for? The risks involved should be spelled out in the consent form you are asked to sign. Let’s look at this from the perspective of joint replacement. Here is another elective surgery, one fraught with risks, huge expense and long rehabilitation. Why would anyone subject themselves to the risks of infection? Now we are talking quality of life. Not being able to walk without intense pain would be an acceptable reason to have this surgery. So joint replacement can improve quality of life, allowing a return to work and living. Worth the risk? Probably. You should also always ask for second opinion from a surgeon in a practice not associated with your surgeon’s. You have had a heart attack and now find you must have bypass surgery. You aren’t a candidate for the angioplasty procedure that is done so frequently now, although you did ask about that! This may not be an elective surgery. How can improve your chances of having a good outcome? Can you reduce the chances of problems like common duct damage and joint replacement infection? You absolutely can. The second thing you should know is…. How many times has my surgeon performed this surgery? How often is this surgery performed at the hospital I am going to? Is the nursing staff familiar with the techniques? Do they have all the equipment needed? Your surgeon is a highly trained, well educated, hard working person. He or she sacrificed years of life and tons of money to get to this point of being able to diagnose and treat you. But he is not God. He should be willing to listen to you and answer your questions, one of which should be ‘How many times have you done this surgery?” Everyone has to have a ‘first time’. Even surgeons have to do a surgery for the ‘first time’ An experienced surgeon who wants to learn a new technique will usually train under the watchful eye of a surgeon who is well versed in the technique. Hospital operating rooms have huge capital budgets for equipment that rapidly age and require replacement, upgrading and inventory maintenance. How can you be sure that the hospital you go to has the required equipment, instrumentation and supplies? Total joint replacement requires hundreds of specialized sizers, instruments, positioning equipment and implants. Each patient needs different size implants. Usually, a hospital doesn’t need to stock everything needed for a surgery. The company providing the implants sends trays of instruments that are processed by the sterilization facility at the hospital, along with hundreds of different sizes of implants. A knee replacement surgery, for instance, requires four different components. Each component may come in ten or more different sizes. All of these parts must be in place before the surgery can take place. If the staff is inexperienced, absent or incorrect instrumentation and implants can go unnoticed and even the most experienced surgeon cannot do successful surgery under these circumstances. In many cases, representatives from the implant companies attend the surgeries and are there as a resource to the surgeon and nursing staff. Vascular implants are a concern because most hospitals must stock a huge supply of sizes, even the unusual, rare size, just in case. Vascular surgery can be necessary in an emergent situation, so implants and instrumentation sterile and in stock is crucial. These are just a few of the possibilities which can occur. Knowing in advance what level of expertise your local hospital is functioning at can save a lot of frustration, and perhaps your life.

Types of over the counter pain

Everyone has used some sort of over the counter pain reliever. Often times people misuse these products because they do not believe they are strong enough or as harmful as prescription medications. While over the counter medications are weaker than prescription pain relief medications, they are still medicine. Over the counter pain relief comes in two forms: non steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen. Knowing the differences between the two and how they work can help you make a better choice on what products to use and how to use them. NSAIDs work by stopping the production of prostaglandin’s. Prostaglandin’s are a natural chemical in the body that trigger pain. They also reduce inflammation. NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and ketoprofen. Gastrointestinal problems are the most common side effect of NSAIDs. NSAIDs also cause problems with kidney function. The severity and chance of experiencing side effects increase with use. NSAIDs can also interfere with blood pressure medications. People who drink more than 1 alcoholic beverage per week increase their chances of experiencing side effects from NSAIDs. Acetaminophen works to relieve pain and reduce fever. Acetaminophen works by stopping pain in the brain as opposed to how NSAIDs stop pain at the area of pain. So instead of stopping the pain, acetaminophen actually blocks the brain from feeling the pain. Long term use of acetaminophen, especially in large doses can cause kidney damage. Acetaminophen is easier on the gastrointestinal area than NSAIDs, but can effect the liver with long term use. Both NSAIDs and acetaminophen may be used together to treat pain. However, it is important not to use two products from the same group together, such as aspirin and naproxen. This could result in an overdose. It is also important to speak with your doctor before taking an over the counter pain medication if you are taking other medication.

    Typhoid mary

Mary Mallon was a "healthy carrier" of an infectious disease, the first ever reported and observed in the New World. But, since then, and throughout the first two decades of the 20th century, more than 100 people were added annually to the rolls of "healthy carriers" of typhoid in New-York alone. Moreover, though she infected 47 people with typhoid fever (11 of which were members of one family and their hired help) - only 3 of her inadvertent victims died. Tony Labella, another carrier, caused the death of 5 people (of 122 he had infected). But the nickname of this New York City, fiery Irish immigrant cook - Typhoid Mary - was widely dreaded in the early 1900s. Immune to the disease herself, she was the perfect carrier through her contaminated food. Private investigators hired in 1906 to find the source of the epidemic failed. George Soper, a civil engineer, traced it back to 37-years old Mallon. When he confronted her with his suspicions and asked for samples of her blood and stool, she advanced on him with a carving knife. She similarly lunged with a "long kitchen knife" at policemen who accompanied visiting health officials. Having been found hiding in an areaway closet, under the staircase outside, on a neighbour's property, she was ultimately subdued. Attempts to cure her with Hexamethylenamin, laxatives, Urotropin, and brewer's yeast failed. She was quarantined in 1907 for a period of three years by health officials. She was released in February 1910 when she pledged not to prepare food for others again, to observe some rules of hygiene, to provide periodic fecal samples, and to notify the health department on changes of her address. She sued the Board of Health of the City of New York in 1909. Weekly stool samples she sent to a private lab came consistently clean - while the same stool, analyzed by the department's own labs, turned out to be mostly infected with typhoid bacilli!!! She protested her innocence: "This contention that I am a perpetual menace in the spread of typhoid germs is not true. My own doctors say I have no typhoid germs. I am an innocent human being. I have committed no crime and I am treated like an outcast - a criminal. It is unjust, outrageous, uncivilized. It seems incredible that in a Christian community a defenseless woman can be treated in this manner." She lost the case though, in some respects, she was treated unfairly. Alphonse Cotils, another typhoid carrier, a restaurant and bakery owner who repeatedly violated his pledge not to prepare food for his clientele, got away with a mere reprimand. In 1911, inoculation for typhoid became publicly available - but few bothered as the disease had only a 10% fatality rate. Mallon reneged on her promises to the Health Board and in 1915 - using the pseudonym Ms. Brown - infected mothers and their newborns with typhoid at the Sloane Maternity Hospital in Manhattan where she worked as a cook. Twenty five people caught the fever and two of them died. She spent the next 23 years - until her death in 1938 - with her dog in quarantine at Riverside Hospital in North Brother Island. She became a nurse, hospital help, and a kind of lab technician. After a massive stroke she suffered in 1932, she was transferred to the children's ward.

Ultrasound is powerful treatment not just pictures

Most of the people associate ultrasound with pregnancy diagnostics. This may be a popular idea but ultrasound is being widely used in many other medical treatments and diagnostics like tumors, cancers, kidney stones and several others. It is interesting to note that ultrasound is not only used for medical applications but also in industrial field, as a weapon and as a disintegrating element. Ultrasound is a sound that has a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. The frequency is approximately 20,000 hertz. Medical Ultrasonography is one of the main applications of ultrasound. It is a diagnostic imaging technique that is used to visualize the internal organs. The size and structure of the organ is analyzed in order to understand the complications (if there are any) or determine the features and nature of the organs. Obstetric Sonography is widely used during pregnancy. In the medical field ultrasound has some effective therapeutic applications. Treatment of benign and malignant tumors and other similar disorders is a very common feature. This is done through high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), or focused ultrasound surgery (FUS). The treatment for tumors is guided by MRI, as in magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound. Ultrasound is used in various applications by varying its frequency and intensity. More powerful ultrasound is used to clean teeth (in dental department) or it is used to heat up biological tissues, hence researchers have devised an effective cure for cancers through ultrasound. Focused ultrasound is widely used to break the stones that develop in the kidneys. This method eliminates any possibility of surgery. Cataract treatment is also possible through ultrasonic Phacoemulsification (generally less powerful waves are used). Recently researchers have found various other applications of low-intensity ultrasound. It has been discovered that it has the ability to stimulate bone-growth and it is also capable of disrupting the blood-brain barrier for delivery of the drugs. Besides that, ultrasound is used for industrial cleaning and for locating flaws in different materials. They are also used to disintegrate many micro-organisms like bacteria. Killing bacteria in sewage has become very easy. Ultrasound has been very useful in scaring away the rodents that destroy many food materials and other objects. Rodents have the capacity to listen high-frequency sounds also they can be bombarded with ultrasonic waves to get rid of them. Many nations have also developed ultrasound weapons that are fatal and capable of causing mass destruction.

Understanding and treating your nail fungus

Nail fungus is an awful condition that can really be bothersome. It is a condition in which a fungus invades the skin in and around the nail bed. It can happen in either the toes or the fingers and can be quite uncomfortable as well as noticeable. But, there are several things that you can do to fight off these nail fungus problems and it starts with an education about them. Symptoms Of Nail Fungus There are several ways to know if you have nail fungus. Nails will change in some way as an indication that there is a problem. Brittleness and discoloration are evident. You will find that nail fungus can also cause a thickening of the nail or even a distortion of the nail’s actual shape. The nail could lose its shine and luster and will often begin to loosen. If you have these conditions, you will want to seek the advice of your family doctor. The doctor will probably simply tell you and begin treatment for nail fungus but a culture will tell for sure if you have a nail fungus. The Causes Of Nail Fungus Nail fungus is caused by a number of different microorganisms. Most of the time, bacteria or fungi are the main culprits. While a small amount of these organisms is actually good for the body, some will grow quickly and then form infections that lead to conditions such as nail fungus. They feed off of the dead tissues that are found from the hair, nails, and on the skin. Fungal infections can be caused by mold like fungi. These could be such conditions as athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. Other fungus is yeast like fungi and would include such conditions as diaper rash, oral thrush and genital rashes. Most of the time, nail fungus happens on the toes and recurs often. It can be picked up from public areas such as swimming pools or shower rooms. Those individuals who sweat a lot have an increased chance of getting and keeping nail fungus infections because they thrive on wet, moist areas. Treating Nail Fungus Unfortunately, treating nail fungus is difficult and often is impossible. Many people start with creams thinking that they will work, but unfortunately, they have little chance of fighting off the infection. Oral medications are available to help. Sporanox and Lamisil are two that are commonly given but the side effects of these medications often cause them to be not worth the risk. And, they often will take several months to show any improvement. Still, reoccurrences will happen. The only way for it to be cured is for new, non infected nails to grow in place of the badly infected ones. It is wise to contact your health care provider to talk about solutions to your nail fungus problems. They can offer input in how to treat and how to overcome these conditionsplications of nail fungus include permanent damage to the nail itself, skin infections which are secondary as well as the common recurrent nail fungus infections. The best prevention of nail fungus is proper hygiene. Keeping the skin in the area of the nail fungus clean and dry will help to alleviate some of the inflammations. Take care of the nails and always wash and dry your hands after you have touched the affected area of the body.

    Understanding digestion

: The Digestive Process Digestion begins once food is broken down by the teeth, tongue and saliva and passes through the esophagus to the stomach. Once food enters the Understanding Digestionstomach the break down continues. Slight amounts of chemical processes occur while food is being broken down in the stomach, most pertaining to protein, by the enzymes in the stomach. Once food has been broken down in the stomach it passes to the small intestine where further breakdown occurs by specialized enzymes and helpful bacteria. In the small intestine the useful particles are then absorbed into the bloodstream where they are used by the body, while the remaining elements are ultimately expelled as waste. Toxic Build Up Living in the modern world the human body is subject to toxins and chemicals that it was not designed to deal with. Processed sugar, flour and other grains as well as preservatives found in most foods cannot be properly broken down during the digestive process and their residue becomes first a mucus covering in the intestines and then a hard material that blocks proper vitamin and mineral absorption. Overtime this hardened build up becomes thicker and thinker inhibiting the body’s ability to extract the important elements of food, causing lower energy levels due to a deficiency in vitamin absorption into the bloodstream, as well as a lower metabolism. The hardened build up also causes an increased risk of health problems. Due to the fecal build up in the intestines the body is unable to expel waste in an effective manner, causing constipation and increased levels of chemical and toxic build up within the system. Increased levels of toxic build up raises the chance of possible diseases and life threatening illnesses. Internal Cleansing Products Internal Cleansing Products use varied formulations of vitamins, minerals and herbs to help improve the digestive process and break down the hardened fecal build up that has occurred over time. When the body takes in herbs like Golden Seal, Apple Pectin and Aloe Vera and chemical similar elements the chemicals are broken down in the stomach and passed into the intestines where they breakdown the hardened fecal matter that is blocking proper mineral absorption. Once the fecal build up is broken down it is then simply flushed from the system as a normal bowel movement. Most adults have an amazing amount of hardened fecal build up in their systems, and it can take up to 30 days of continued use of an internal cleansing product before a majority of the buildup is effectively flushed from the body. Anyone over the age of 18 needs one internal cleansing per year for proper digestive health. Other Important Information The liver, kidneys, and gallbladder all serve important roles in the digestive system and can become clogged with unwanted buildup. It is important to flush these parts of the digestive system as well. Understanding drug and alcohol rehabilitation

For many years, when people thought of alcohol and drug rehab, the image that almost immediately came to mind was most likely a group of people, sitting in a circle in folding chairs in a big vacant room. Its true that group programs still aid many people in their quest to stop drinking and using illegal substances but most who have fell too deep into their addictions do not find relief this way. There is good news for those who need help getting over their addictions - slowly, there has been a proliferation of alternative therapies to alcohol and drug rehab. These methods may prove useful when traditional rehabilitation methods fail. 1. Why Do People Get Addictions? The reasons for addiction are complicated and vary with each and every individual. These same reasons may be difficult for us to understand, and even a lot more difficult to resolve. Drug and alcohol rehab in recent years has taken a hard and diverse approach to the problem of addiction. Taking in consideration are the physical, emotional, and even nutritional factors that may be causes. Whether you're seeking help for yourself or whether you are a concerned friend or family member of someone who is in a very dangerous grip of addiction, be confident that you are not the only one. Addictions come in varied forms, some are dangerous and some are not. 2. The Physiological Approach It doesn’t mean that just because you are encountering a dangerous addiction it’s alright to think that you are different from everyone else. It only means that you'll need to seek out specially qualified help. Many physiological and chemical imbalances that occur in our bodies and brains may contribute or cause our feelings of depression, that can lead us into addiction as we try to self medicate to compensate for our emotional distress. We are living in an era where many problems like chemical depression and blood sugar imbalances are easily diagnosed and treated. Often, addicts who treat these underlying problems will experience great relief from the urge to feel better by drinking. 3. Blood Chemistry The best and most popular idea we have of drug rehabilitation is the old 12-step group therapy that we so often see on television shows and movies. The fact is, science has a lot more to tell us about how our bodies and brains respond to all kinds of substances. A lot of evidence suggests that when a physiological or chemical imbalance is occurs in the brain no matter what the cause, that individual will try to compensate for the imbalance he is experiencing by self-medicating with drugs. Modern drug rehab programs often use this approach to look for chemical brain imbalances to help their patients recover. In addition to this, imbalances in blood chemistry can also lead to drug and alcohol addiction. Having problems such as low blood sugar can lead someone to self medicate so that he can cure any fatigue or anxiety that he may be feeling. A balanced nutritional intake and exercise have shown themselves to be aids in the process of drug rehab. 4. Social Theory Usually people who are deeply addicted often have neglected themselves, so by finding a diet and exercise program, it can really lift their self image. Another advantage of exercise to anyone who is an addict is that it also provides a natural high that can help an addict to get through the rough periods in his rehabilitation. Some individuals may be comfortable with the idea of group counseling while some may have difficulty in comprehending it. An option for these kinds of people is one on one therapy, where a therapist can reach out to the deepest and most personal aspects of an addict’s life. Looking for answers for addiction and possible recovery is an extremely difficult task to anyone. It takes a lot of devotion and time to even see the smallest of developments. Being able to find the right place to do the work toward recovery is an important step. The wants needs of each and every addict are different from each other, and the process of finding a place to fully recover can be a very deep, difficult, personal and intense process.

    Understanding how pain medicines work

There are many different types of pain medicines. Some only relieve pain. Some treat both pain and swelling. Here's a closer look at what you should know about some popular pain medicines. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) relieves pain and fever, but not swelling. Therefore it is often used to treat headaches or sinus pain. It is unclear exactly how acetaminophen works. It can be bought without a prescription, but that does not mean it's risk-free. It can cause serious damage to the liver at higher than recommended doses. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or "NSAIDs" are another type of pain medicine. For some NSAIDs you must have a prescription, but others you can buy over-the-counter. NSAIDs treat both pain and swelling. NSAIDs work by blocking an enzyme called COX. There are two forms of the COX enzyme in the body: • COX-1, which is found in the body and is important for protecting the stomach lining • COX-2, which is made when joints are damaged and may cause some of the pain and swelling of arthritis Non-selective NSAIDs act on both forms of the COX enzyme. Naproxen (Aleve), ibuprofen (Advil), and aspirin are all examples of NSAIDs that block both types of enzymes. There are other types of NSAIDs called COX-2 specific inhibitors. They target the COX-2 enzyme, but not the COX-1. CELEBREX® (celecoxib capsules) is an example of a COX-2 specific inhibitor. Finding the right pain reliever is important. That's why people should talk to their doctors to find out the treatment that will work best for them. Your doctor is the best source of information about the benefits and risks of different treatment options. Be sure to discuss all the medicines you are taking so that your doctor can recommend what is right for you based on your medical needs. Per AE and Dorothy-took out FPO from picture Finding the right pain reliever is important. Talk to your doctor to find out which pain reliever is right for you. Client wants 1-888-CELEBREX Important Information: CELEBREX, like all prescription NSAIDs, may increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. It should not be used right before or after certain heart surgeries. Serious skin reactions or stomach and intestine problems such as bleeding and ulcers can occur without warning and may cause death. Patients taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers. Tell your doctor if you: • Are pregnant • Have a history of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines • Have high blood pressure or heart failure • Have kidney or liver problems People with aspirin-sensitive asthma or allergic reactions due to aspirin or other arthritis medicines or certain drugs called sulfonamides should not take CELEBREX. Prescription CELEBREX should be used exactly as prescribed at the lowest dose possible and for the shortest time needed.

    Understanding rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty, better known as a “nose job,” is a surgical operation on the nose, either to enhance appearance (cosmetic) or to facilitate breathing or correct a birth defect (reconstruction). This procedure can either be partial or full reconstruction, depending on preference and necessity. The procedure of rhinoplasty can vary, depending on necessity. Major work would require general anesthesia, whereas minor or less reconstructive work may only require a local anesthesia. This is not clear-cut, of course, as patient and doctor preferences also play into which is to be used. Small, usually inconspicuous incisions are made inside the nostrils where any impending scars cannot and will not be seen. However, if a total reconstruction is necessary, major incisions will also be applied to the outside. Skin from the columella, separating the nostrils, or even cartilage from the ear, rib, or other part of the body may be used in the process to strengthen or reshape the nose. This is done in both cosmetic and functional objectives. Rhinoplasty can also involve synthetic implants if the structure of the nose is either too severely damaged or weakened, but alloplastic synthetic materials tend to cause complications, such as migration or extrusion, and so synthetics are used in rhinoplasty on an “only-as-necessary” basis. A septoplasty, strongly related to the rhinoplasty, is sometimes conducted to assist in the rhinoplastic surgical process. This procedure can include or not include cosmetic alterations. The cartilage of the septum may be moved, removed, and reshaped to be used in restructuring of the nose, either to enhance appearance or to facilitate breathing or both. A rhinoplasty is usually an easy procedure (although, like anything else, not without its risks), but it can also have its complications, especially in the more serious and severe cases. A person thinking about having one should consider all the advantages and disadvantages before making the decision. Still, it’s popular, especially among film stars in Hollywood, since “facial beautification” operations are rampant there!

Understanding the cost of prescription drugs

The Internet has revolutionized a consumer's ability to research personal health issues and independently discover the available options of finding more affordable ways of obtaining his or her medications. For the millions of Americans who have prescription drug plans as part of their health insurance, the actual cost of medications is somewhat obscured by the co-payment--usually a nominal fee compared to the actual cost of the drug. But for the millions of Americans who don't have access to prescription coverage, who must pay for their medications out of pocket, there is a crucial piece of knowledge that can save them a lot of money: The cost of prescription drugs varies from pharmacy to pharmacy. And in many cases, Internet-based pharmacies can offer even lower costs. For example, a recent survey showed that Walgreens was selling Plavix (75 mg, 90 tablets) for $405.09. SmartChoiceDrugstore sold the exact same drug and quantity for $353.49. According to data collected by SmartChoice, Americans pay more for their prescription drugs than people in other countries. The reason is that pharmaceutical manufacturers sell at much higher prices to U. S. wholesale companies because they have no restrictions on pricing. Higher costs are also attributed to pharmaceutical companies spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year in sales and marketing people to push their medications on the U. S. public and doctors who prescribe the medications. Just like online retailers from whom you'd buy books, appliances or even a car, Internet pharmacies are able to offer lower prices because of lower overhead. With no storefront (and accordant costs) to maintain, there's less of a markup on the merchandise. The medication you receive from Internet pharmacies such as SmartChoice is identical to the medicines found at a neighborhood or chain drugstore. The only difference is what you pay. And if you take several different medications, the savings can be substantial. At SmartChoiceDrugstore, each and every order is filled by a registered and licensed pharmacist. Like any U. S. pharmacy, SmartChoiceDrugstore undergoes rigorous governmental inspections regularly. The site is a full-service pharmacy that has access to all medications that any other pharmacy would have. And like traditional pharmacies, there are policies and procedures in place to validate prescriptions.

    Unfit unpretty feet

Most women think that because they get regular pedicures their feet and toenails are clean and safe from infections. What they don't realize is that women are more susceptible to toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders. Think of the variety of shoes most women squeeze their feet into for the sake of looking fashionable. Most of women's footwear sacrifice comfort and ultimately, the health of their toes. According to David Wong, a dermatologist from Sydney, the most common toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders are onychomycosis, Athletes Foot, bunions, and tinea. These are often infectious, ugly, and uncomfortable conditions which may affect the ability to do daily activities. He also stressed that nail infections are not cosmetic problems. It is not also a matter of cleanliness. You are at risk of fungal infections even if you're toes and feet are squeaky clean. Regular pedicures are not the answer since feet specialists at most salons are only trained and equipped to beautify feet and toes, not to cure these infections. What's more, most think that toenail discolorations are just that, discolorations. They think that these can be covered up by the latest nail polish trend. What they don't know is that these discolorations can be symptoms of toe infection. He names stubbing toes, too-short nails, and wearing tight foot wear as most common causes of infections because these weaken nails and opens nail beds for contamination of bacteria. Aside from discolorations, other symptoms of toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders are nail crumbling, thick nails, and brittle nails. Extreme cases might even cause nails to separate from their beds. The skin around the infected nail might also collect pus. Foul foot odor is an almost sure sign of fungal feet infections. If you are thinking to avoid damp places to avoid getting infected, Dr. Wong states that damp places are not the only place where you might be infected. Places where skin can get contact like carpets, mats, linens, and other towels are also possible places to incur infections. Public places like public pools, showers, hotels, motels, changing/locker rooms, and laundry service rooms are high infection risk areas. Sharing foot wear is also a culprit in getting infections. He emphasized to avoid borrowing or lending of footwear like socks and shoes to reduce risks of infections. Dr. Wong advocates immediate medical action if you suspect being infected by toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders because it is uncommon for these infections to heal on their own. Early medication and treatment could prevent fungi to grow, hence, stopping the progress of the infection. At the first symptom of nail disease, consult your doctor to avoid unpretty feet.

Untreated peptic ulcer can lead to serious complications

Peptic ulcer is a common disorder of the digestive system that causes inflammation, irritation and lesions to internal tissues and organs. Peptic ulcers generally occur on the premises of infection with Helicobacter pylori (bacteria that often populate the interior of the stomach), triggered by an overproduction of gastric acids and pepsin. Helicobacter pylori weaken the internal organs’ mucus-covered protective walls, enabling digestive fluids to cause ulcerations and lesions. The natural physiologic factors that can prevent the occurrence of peptic ulcer are: appropriate production of mucus, good mucosal blood circulation, appropriate production of bicarbonate, alkaline tide and a thick hydrophobic layer. If the balance of these natural defenses is perturbed, the risks of developing peptic ulcer are considerably increased. Peptic ulcers can be developed either at the level of the duodenum or at the level of the stomach. Duodenal peptic ulcers are generally less serious, while stomach peptic ulcers can lead to serious complications. In the absence of an appropriate medical treatment, stomach peptic ulcer can lead to perforated ulcer or bleeding ulcer, disorders that require immediate medical intervention. Peptic ulcer occurs in people of all ages and it affects both sexes equally. Although at first the disorder may be mild, peptic ulcer can progress over the years, sometimes even becoming life-threatening. However, nowadays peptic ulcer can be effectively overcome with medication treatments, rarely requiring surgical intervention. When it is timely diagnosed, peptic ulcer is highly curable. Peptic ulcer usually generates symptoms such as abdominal discomfort and soreness, which usually intensify after meals or during the night. It is important to note that antacids can only provide temporary symptomatic relief, being unable to prevent the progression of peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcer can only be overcome with the means of an appropriate diet and specific medical treatment. When suffering from peptic ulcer, it is very important to pay regular visits to your doctor in order to receive medical examinations and a correct treatment. The best means of preventing the progression of peptic ulcer are a healthy lifestyle and an appropriate diet. A good ulcer diet can ease the symptoms of peptic ulcer and can also keep the disorder under control. Ulcer diets should only contain non-acidic foods and beverages. When suffering from peptic ulcer, you should limit the intake of citrus fruits, processed foods and some dairy products. Although milk is known to provide relief for peptic ulcer, it can actually aggravate the disorder. Avoid smoking, alcohol and coffee when suffering from peptic ulcer. Smoking affects the blood circulation at the level of the stomach and it also slows down the process of healing, while coffee and alcoholic beverages stimulate an overproduction of pepsin and gastric acids. In order to minimize the risk of complications, it is best to abstain from smoking, alcoholic and caffeine beverages when suffering from peptic ulcer.

Using essential oils successfully with the herpes virus a personal account

Aromatherapy Oils and the Herpes Virus - One Person's Success Story The Herpes Simplex virus (or HSV) is a difficult disease. It is widely known as incurable, with painful skin lesions on sensitive areas of the body. The lesions reccur more often for some people than others - their 'outbreaks' tend to be related to periods of high-stress. Modern medicine does not offer a cure, though there are pharmaceutical preparations available to limit the frequency and duration of HSV outbreaks. With a reputation as 'incurable', 'painful', 'not-so-pretty', and varieties described as 'oral and labial' or 'genital', the disease can be a little challenging and embarrasing to say the least. Well, I've been through this. I've had the painful lesions, had to deal with the regular outbreaks of painful cold-sores in my mouth and on my lips (I was blessed with the 'oral' variety). I've been through those great internal debates on how to break the news to a partner (thankfully always returning that look that says something like 'Oh! I thought you were going to tell me my cat just died...that's no big deal'). Though it still seemed like a big deal. Regularly having those few days of feeling like a flu was coming on, followed by a few days of outbreak - at what always seemed like the worst of times. On top of it, being an athlete, training really hard tended to cause outbreaks as well - weightlifting in particular. Maybe it was just really strenuous, or maybe I wasn't actually a 'weightlifter' - but that heavy lifting would almost always lead, once again, to an outbreak. I freqently wondered in the midst of these bouts with HSV if this was something I'd have to deal with for the rest of my life - I tried doctor prescribed medicines, Lysine and other remedies, but none kept the virus at bay enough to really make a difference. Then someone introduced me to essential oils, and I learned a little about their studied antiviral activity. I stumbled onto research performed with a certain oil known as Melissa. Melissa essential oil is distilled from Melissa herb, a plant with a long history in natural medicine. The plant yields a relatively small amount of oil compared to other aromatic varieties, so it's cost seems a little high. But formal investigation has been being going on in Europe for many years applying the oil to herpes lesions, with very promising results. One company has even extracted a component of the oil and sold it in a prescription form (though I have not read of any evidence showing the extract works better than the oil itself). The most encouraging statement regarding the use of Melissa on herpes was made by Dr. Dietrich Wabner, a professor at the University of Munich: he stated that a single application of Melissa may lead to a complete remission of the disease. A possible cure! I'd figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried a little bottle of the oil. Searching further, I found a regimine for the oils' use. Melissa might not lead to a complete remission in just one application - other healers were finding success when the oil was applied to the affected area when an outbreak felt 'imminent'. The oil was applied perhaps three times per day during the outbreak; this was repeated the next several times the user thought an outbreak may be coming on, and through the duration of the skin healing. My outbreaks were usually on my tongue at that point (though they started on the palate of my mouth). I would get a very fatigued feeling for a few days, then my tongue would get what seemed like individual taste buds that would feel as though they were burnt (and yes, I have had medical confirmation as to their cause). I also had lesions on my lip, but not as often. So I began the Melissa oil program - just one drop in my mouth a few times a day - and thankfully I actually liked the taste! Well, perhaps the single dose worked for some folks, but I wasn't quite so fortunate - though I was certainly not discouraged. The history of Melissa and it's healing powers was renoun, and I kept up with the program. Despite continuing to have outbreaks, they were shorter, and they seemed to occur less frequently. And after a while, it dawned on me - the outbreaks had stopped completely! And believe me, my life has been no less stressful - more so if anything. Also, while outbreaks do tend to happen less freqently for some over time, I had been living with this for 15 years and they were still fairly regular. But no matter how stressful my days were, how heavy my weight training sessions or other athletic endeavors, the outbreaks have not returned! For individuals who may have more sensitive skin than I, or have outbreaks in more sensitive places, Melissa essential oil can be diluted in a vegetable or nut oil (Hazelnut oil or Rosehipseed are commonly used) to 1/10th or even less of the total volume and be just as effective (some say that even 1% will work). It is important to note - and repeated many times in the literature - that taking any essential oil orally, or appliying undiluted to the skin, should be done with extreme caution - whatch your own reaction closely and proceed accordingly. I do not have experience with application to the genital variety of Herpes simplex, but the texts do not make a distinction - this may be where a carrier oil could come in handy. But whatever way it's used, the system should be followed closely: apply Melissa 2-3 times a day to the affected area when an outbreak is on the way, and use it until the sores have healed completely. Follow this method for the next several outbreaks; there are no guarantees, but this may work for you or someone you may know - and what a wonderful thing it can be! For sufferer's of Shingles, another Herpes virus variety causing lesions of the skin, Ravensara (Ravensara aromatica, or 'True' Ravensara) oil has been used. Individuals have found relief using Ravensara in a 50-50 blend with Tamanu Nut oil. The Tamanu Nut sooths the skin during the healing process and keeps the Ravensara in contact with the sores. I have not heard of this offering a complete cure, but I have heard of this blend really helping relieve discomfort of this condition. So if you choose to use aromatherapy oils like Melissa or Ravensara yourself (or to a recommendation), find a trusted source for the essential oils. Find 'true' varieties of each - Melissa is often adulterated, and the real thing is generally priced between $10 and $20 per milliliter (about 25 drops, which actually goes a long way); Ravensara should be of the 'Ravensara aromatica' variety. Be conservative with direct application - remember that diluting the oil has not been reported to reduce efficacy. Yes, I liked the Melissa oil straight, and never had a problem - but others I've known have had sensitive reactions - though this may have been related to UV exposure. Be good to yourself and listen to your body - may you achieve healing success!
