What can happen if high blood pressure is left untreated

Because people with high blood pressure do not usually have any symptoms until the disease has reached an advanced stage, high blood pressure is often called the “silent killer.” That is why having blood pressure checked regularly is important. The lack of symptoms is why some people who are aware they have high blood pressure do not take any steps to control and treat it. Because they feel okay they think everything is okay. But if high blood pressure is left untreated, serious problems may develop over time. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause strokes. As high blood pressure causes a person’s arteries to get narrower and narrower, it is harder for blood to get to the brain. That can potentially cause blot clots in the brain, cause a blood vessel in the brain to leak, or cause a blood vessel in the brain to rupture. Kidney disease ( gothypertension/hypertension/hypertensionandkidneyfailure)can occur if high blood pressure is left untreated. If the arteries in the body are narrowed from sustained high blood pressure, the impaired flow of blood throughout the body can cause waste to build up in the blood because it is not getting to the kidneys often enough to discard all the waste products. As the waste builds up, it becomes more and more difficult for the kidneys to try and get rid of the waste, putting a big strain on the kidneys. This can cause the kidney functions to greatly diminish or even fail entirely. If the kidneys start to function at less than twenty percent of capacity, dialysis treatments will usually be needed. A kidney transplant would be an option to avoid having to get lifetime dialysis treatments if the person is a candidate for a transplant and a kidney becomes available. Problems with a person’s eyes can also occur as a result of untreated high blood pressure, causing a loss of vision if it gets severe enough. High blood pressure can also lead to memory loss and dementia. Heart problems are another serious problem that can develop if high blood pressure is left untreated. The arteries in the heart can become hard and stiff from restricted blood flow, causing a condition called arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). It is common for people with untreated high blood pressure to have plaque accumulate in the major arteries of the heart. The plaque deposits reduce blood flow to the heart and can eventually cause a heart attack. High blood pressure narrows the arteries and blood vessels in the body. Getting oxygen rich blood to the heart becomes more difficult as the arteries get narrower. If the heart cannot get enough oxygen, it will cause a heart attack.

    What causes restless leg syndrome

Restless legs syndrome or shortly RLS, is a health condition in which legs feel very uncomfortable while sitting or lying down, especially at night. Usually it makes one feel like getting up and moving around. When doing so, the unpleasant feeling of restless legs syndrome might go away, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Restless leg syndrome affects both, men and women and can begin when you're young or as you get older. Restless legs syndrome can disrupt sleep thus leading to daytime drowsiness. So, what causes restless leg syndrome? Nobody actually knows the real cause for restless leg syndrome. Some research has been done and the researchers suspect it might be due to an imbalance of the brain chemical called dopamine. Dopamine sends messages to control muscle movement. It has been also noticed that restless leg syndrome runs in families and that stress tends to make things even worse. If there is any changes in hormonal balance, that may worsen restless leg syndrome symptoms. It has been noticed that some women experience restless leg syndrome during their pregnancy and it dissapears soon after the delivery. However, restless leg syndrome is not related to some serious medical problems, but sometimes it accompanies other conditions and some of them are peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy damages the nerves in hands and feet and sometimes it is due to chronic diseases such as diabetes and alcoholism. Also, iron deficiency might cause restless leg syndrome, it might cause or worsen restless legs syndrome. Researchers also assume that kidney failure might be the cause too, at least to a degree. This is when the kidney does not function properly, iron stores in blood can decrease and cause some of the rls symptoms. All these and some other changes in body chemistry may cause or worsen restless leg syndrome. Some other, known causes of restless leg syndrome include muscle overexertion, prolonged sitting, dehydration, decreased potassium levels, neuromuscular disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, certain medications, such as albuterol, niacin, diuretics, and some calcium channel blockers and antipsychotic medications, also alcohol use. What does cosmetic surgery typically cost

The costs for cosmetic surgery vary greatly throughout the United States. A number of factors contribute to these cost differences including the type of cosmetic surgery procedure performed, the level of complexity presented by the patient (in other words, how much work is needed), the location, and the surgeon’s individual fees. It is entirely feasible that two individuals visiting the same surgeon for a consultation on a procedure will be quoted two different prices. This is due to the fact that each individual presents a unique challenge to the doctor. Some surgeries require more work than others, even if the two individuals are seeking the same procedure. For this reason, it is nearly impossible for a doctor to quote a patient a set price for a procedure until he has had a chance to examine the patient in person. Many health insurance companies will not cover the costs of cosmetic surgery, especially if the procedure is an elective one. There are a few circumstances under which your insurance may pick up a portion, perhaps even all, of your surgical bills. For example, many insurance companies will pay for rhinoplasty, which is a nose job, if the procedure is necessary to reduce a blockage that is unduly restricting a patient’s breathing. To determine if your cosmetic surgery is covered by your insurance plan, contact your health insurance provider. Keep in mind that even if the procedure is covered, you may be responsible for a deductible or co-payment. The national average, as of December 2005, of a number of cosmetic surgeries is detailed below. As discussed above, the actual cost of your surgery will vary based on the extent of work needed, the surgeon’s geographical location, and the surgeon’s individual fees. In the United States, New York has the highest costs for plastic surgery. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Florida and Texas, which offer the most affordable procedures in the nation. The national averages listed below do not include anesthesiology costs, operating room charges, or related expenses. Procedure Cost Breast implants $3,043 Breast lift $3,503 Chin augmentation $1,488 Ear surgery $2,168 Eyelid surgery $2,544 Facelift $5,007 Laser hair removal $360 per treatment Laser skin resurfacing $2,243 Liposuction $2,049 per area treated Microdermabrasion $136 per treatment Rhinoplasty $2,947 Tummy tuck $4,205 Due to the high costs of most cosmetic surgery procedures, most surgeons now offer a variety of payment options to patients. These may include cash, personal checks, and credit card payments. A number of surgeons also now offer plastic surgery financing plans. Financing plans allow patients to spread the cost of the surgery over an extended period of time, so that patients are not forced to pay for the entire surgery upfront. If you are considering plastic surgery, talk to local surgeons to set up a consultation and inquire about specific pricing and financial options available to you.

What every man needs to know to stay healthy

In today’s fast-pace world, who has time to worry about health? There is just too much to do. With the demanding responsibilities of school and work, it becomes stressful just to squeeze in time to relax. Tight schedule tactics are key. As every shrewd planner knows, the maintenance of personal health is essential. Health problems will most often monopolize the calendar. Proactive actions take up less time in the long run. It is never too early or late to start taking care of your health. There is no time to wait. Good health is really not complicated. The ingredients of a healthy lifestyle can be outlined into six basic categories: - Eat foods with high fiber, low saturated-fat, and low sugar. Diets should regularly meet all levels of essential nutrients. Fruits and vegetables should be incorporated into meals and snacks whenever possible. - Include vitamins and supplements into daily diet. - Exercise regularly. - Schedule regular physical examinations. - Balance work and social activities. - Avoid beginning and eliminate rapidly unhealthy lifestyle habits. Good health is not a fad. Rather, it should be practiced throughout the entire life cycle. Here are some age-focused priorities: 20 Years and Under: This group is at the most advantage. By starting sound habits now, teenagers have the power to set foundations for a long and happy future. The first thing to remember is that growth is still occurring. Growing muscles and bones require a healthy diet. However, as modern food processing often strips foods of vital nutrients, vitamins and supplements become a necessary diet component. A good multi-vitamin is a great place to start. Research continues to find more and more on the impact of diet/exercise in the reduction of major health problems such as obesity and cancer. Boys should regularly engage in both cardiovascular and long-endurance activities. Organized athletics provide an excellent way to combine exercise with social opportunities. Examinations should include a yearly physical and regular eye and dental exams. In later years, various other exams should begin. Starting at fifteen years of age, teens should give themselves monthly testicular exams to check for painless lumps connected with testicular cancer. At eighteen, routine electrocardiograms and monthly self melanoma exams should begin. Life should be balanced between a variety of school and social activities. However, while social settings are an important component of life, they also have a tendency to increase one’s contact with high-risk behaviors. Proper education on matters such as alcohol, cigarettes, other drugs, as well as sex education greatly reduce future addictions and severe health problems. Begun early, a healthy lifestyle has a greater chance at lasting effects. While people are more likely to continue early-rooted practices, healthy beginnings fortify the body for the years ahead. 20 to 40 Years Beginning in the early twenties and continuing to early middle-life, men need not only to continue the good heath practices of earlier ages, but also to aid the body in its resistance of stress and other increasing health risks. As young adults participate in higher education and in the work force, responsibilities widen and time becomes an increasing factor. Fast food often serves as the most convenient diet choice. However, a healthy diet and exercise are essential to counteract increasing threats of heart disease and cancer. A diet low in fat is crucial. The need for supplements heightens. Schedules will interfere with healthy meal plans. As vitamins and supplements substitute for missing nutrients, they also help assist in the reduction of health risks. Busy schedules will inevitably place a strain on the immune system. With an appropriate vitamin and herbal plan, aligned with an individual’s unique make up, illnesses will reduce and energy will maximize. Substance use should be kept at the lowest possible level. Caffeine intake should remain moderate. If effects such as anxiety, headaches, insomnia, and heart palpitations result, men should reduce/eliminate levels and should see a physician for persisting symptoms. Since cigarettes harm lungs and increase heart disease and cancer, they should be avoided at all times. Ideally, alcohol consumption should not exceed three standard-size drinks a day. While causing a large percentage of male fatalities, such as liver implications and driving accidents, alcohol and drugs play a large role in issues such as domestic violence. Healthy relationships are crucial in the reduction of stress and loneliness. Men at this time are highly susceptible to heart disease, strokes, and other serious health issues. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels must be closely monitored. At twenty-one, men should begin checking their blood-pressure annually. If readings show 140/90 and over, regular testing should be increased. At thirty-five, cholesterol tests should begin. Tests should be repeated at least every five years. With the avoidance of hypertension, high-blood pressure, and of high levels of cholesterol, men can greatly improve their quality and longevity of life. Health risks do increase during this time of life. Nevertheless, a healthy lifestyle will greatly reduce threats and increase the assurance of a high quality of life. 40 Years and Beyond: There is no reason to let preventable health risks interfere with the quality of life. Tests for cholesterol and blood pressure should continue. Healthy diets often need a doctor monitoring for warning signs such as high blood sugar levels. Vitamin and supplements are crucial. While relieving risks and reducing problems, they greatly ensure the transition and preservation in life’s later years. While activity may eventually need to decrease, a doctor will most likely prescribe the continuation of some form of exercise. Men should begin scheduling exams for two high health risks at age fifty. The components of a colorectal exam should range from one to ten years. With early discovery, colorectal cancer is easily treated. Prostate cancer is the most common form for men. An annual PSA blood test and a Digital Rectal Exam are used for cancer discovery. Doctors often suggest more frequent testing for people with a family history of prostate cancer and/or those of African American ethnicity. With the combined efforts of individually appropriate diets, exercise, and exams and of healthy companionship, men can enjoy healthy maturity into the late years of life. Too often the hectic nature of life causes men to overlook the importance of maintaining good health. However, with good habits including a diet full of healthy foods, vitamins, and supplements, a regular exercise program, and physical exams, a healthy lifestyle is not only attainable but also essential for every man. There should always be time for health.

What happens before during and after a lasik eye surgery procedure

Since LASIK was approved by the FDA in the early 1990’s, the procedure has grown to become the most widely-performed eye surgery in the United States. LASIK is a surgical procedure performed on the eye to correct an individual’s vision and reduce dependency on eyeglasses or contact lenses. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, which literally means to "reshape the cornea from within using a laser.” The procedure has broad applications to treat refractive errors of the eye and can be used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (an elongated cornea). LASIK works by improving the ability of the eye to properly focus light. In a perfectly formed eye light entering the eye bends and directly hits retina, allowing the eye to produce a clear image. The majority of people, though, have imperfectly shaped corneas. Imperfectly shaped corneas do not properly refract the light on the retina, with the result that the viewed image is blurry and distorted. LASIK can correct these refractive errors by permanently changing the shape of the cornea. Once reshaped, the cornea is able to better focus light, eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. LASIK patients will be given a detailed set of instructions to follow, beginning a few weeks before the procedure is to take place. It is critical that these instructions are followed if the surgery is to be a success. Patients wearing contact lenses will be advised to stop wearing their lenses anywhere from 2-4 weeks before the procedure, to give their eyes a chance to resume their natural shape. Certain foods, vitamins, beauty products, and medication can also affect the health of your eyes and may need to be avoided prior to LASIK. Failure to follow pre-operative instructions may result in a failed LASIK procedure, or the need to completely redo the surgery. Patients remain awake and alert during surgery, although the doctor may administer a mild sedative to help keep the patient calm and relaxed. Numbing eye drops will be applied to the eye to serve as a local anesthetic. Since the eye’s natural tendency is to blink when it comes into contact with foreign items, it is necessary to secure the eyelids to keep them out of the way of the laser. This is done using an instrument called a lid speculum. Once the speculum is in place and the eye is cleaned, a small ring is placed on the cornea to apply a strong suction to the cornea. This part of the procedure can be a bit uncomfortable, but the strong suction ensures that the eyes remain immobile throughout the rest of the surgery. Next a flap is cut into the cornea, leaving a small hinge to keep it attached to the eye. This flap may be made using a small razor sharp knife called a microkeratome, or by using a laser – also called IntraLase. The suction ring serves as a precise guide for the microkeratome to ensure that the flap is made cleanly and accurately. After the cut has been made the suction ring is removed and the flap is gently teased away from the cornea and peeled back (towards the hinge) to reveal the underlying stroma. The doctor will then dry the eye and ask the patient to stare at a fixed light, without moving, until the end of the procedure. Once the eye is in the proper position, the excimer laser will be activated. The surgeon will have already programmed the laser to remove the precise amount of tissue from the exact location(s) on your eye before the start of the procedure. More severe refractive errors will require a longer laser treatment, since more corneal tissue will need to be removed. As the laser pulses a beam of light into the eye to remove the excess tissue from the eye, the patient will hear a ticking or zapping sound and may smell an odor similar to that of burning hair. Once the laser has ceased pulsing, the surgeon will replace the corneal flap on the eye and smooth it out to ensure no surface wrinkles develop. Since an eye is vulnerable after LASIK, it is very important to take extra precautions to protect the eye during the healing process. The doctor will give the patient an eye shield to wear immediately after the LASIK procedure. This shield should be worn while sleeping to prevent a person from rubbing their eye and dislodging the flap. The eye shield also prevents a person from inadvertently putting any pressure on the eye. Antibiotic ointment should be used to prevent infection from forming, while eye drops may be used to keep dry and scratchy eyes well-lubricated as they heal. The doctor will make a follow-up appointment to evaluate the patient’s eyes within 24-48 hours from the time of surgery. This will allow the physician to monitor the healing process, evaluate the eyes for any potential problems, and begin accessing the success of the LASIK procedure. After the initial follow-up appointment, the patient will be asked to return for regular visits every few weeks, then every few months, until such time that the surgeon is confident that the procedure was successful. Keep in mind that LASIK is not a risk-free procedure and that not all individuals are good candidates for LASIK. If you are interested in finding more about this procedure, contact your ophthalmologist and request an appointment.

    What happens during pacemaker surgery

Individuals who require an internal artificial pacemaker to regulate their heartbeat will need to undergo pacemaker surgery to have the device implanted in the body. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, though patients are generally hospitalized overnight for careful monitoring. Patients are given a mild sedative to keep them calm and relaxed but are otherwise awake and alert throughout the procedure. To insert the pacemaker, the surgeon makes a two to three inch incision just below the patient’s collarbone. An electrode lead is inserted into a nearby vein and slowly advanced towards the heart. A fluoroscope is used to guide the doctor as he advances the lead, providing him with a detailed image of the interior of the vein. Once the lead enters into the heart, it is attached to the tissue so that the positioning of the lead may be tested. To test positioning, the surgeon sends small electrical signals down the lead and evaluates the heart’s response to the impulses. A suitable position is one that allows the full strength of the signal to reach the heart, thereby signaling the heart to contract and beat. It may be necessary to reseat the lead within the vein several times before an ideal position is achieved. Once the lead has been placed and secured in the heart, the generator portion of the pacemaker is implanted under the skin. This small box, measuring just a half an inch long by a half an inch wide, is connected to the electrode lead and inserted though the incision into a small pocket just under the skin. The doctor then sutures the incision closed and hooks the patient up to a heart monitor for observation. The whole procedure, from start to finish, typically takes just one to two hours. Patients should expect to feel mild to moderate pain and tenderness around the incision for several days. Since the generator lies just beneath the surface of the skin, most individuals can clearly feel the outline of the pacemaker once the incision site has healed. Some patients end up with mild scarring or a small deformity of the skin near the generator, due to the fact that it is not seated deep within the body. More serious complications are rare (occurring in just 1-2% of patients) and may include severe bleeding, blood clots, puncturing of the heart or lung, heart attack, stroke, or a pacemaker malfunction. Since pacemaker batteries run from five to ten years, it is necessary to replace the generator every few years to ensure that it is running properly. Routine monitoring of the pacemaker ensures that is it operating as designed until such time that a replacement is needed.

What i learned from drug rehabilitation

One of the hardest but most redemptive seasons of my life happened when I spent fourteen months in a drug rehabilitation center. In all my years of writing, I have never written about this experience that has so distinctly shaped my life. Of course, I never would have dreamed that over a year of my life during my mid-twenties would be spent in drug rehabilitation, but it happened. I began doing drugs in junior high school, mostly I guess do to the typical amount of peer pressure that most teens get from their friends. I started using drugs with great hesitation, but party after party I got a little less afraid of using drugs and that became my biggest problem. Losing my fear of doing drugs was the single worst thing that happened to me in my struggle with drug use. My drug use became a more serious problem throughout high school and into my years at university. I thought that I was doing a great job of hiding my problem until Christmas break happened one year and my parents saw all the signs. I had great parents, by the way, and I believe that they were in no way responsible for my drug use or for my eventual need for drug rehabilitation. My drug problem got so bad shortly after that Christmas break that I ended up agreeing to go to drug rehabilitation without any fight. Most drug users, I am told, put up a fight for a while when someone first suggests that they enter drug rehabilitation. But not me. I knew how badly I needed help and I knew that if left alone I would probably allow drugs to kill me. My fourteen months in the drug rehabilitation center taught me more about myself and about life than I ever expected them to. I learned about my value as a human being and as a man for the first time in that center. I learned in drug rehabilitation that drugs are a substitute for a hole that is empty in my life, just as food or exercise or alcohol or any other thing can be for people. I learned that I had a huge responsibility in taking care of my life and my health. It has been healing for me as I have begun talking about my experience with drug rehabilitation with honesty. I have never felt more free than when I am looking back on the mistakes of my past with honestly and then when I am looking forward to my future with hope.

What is dumping after gastric surgery

Typically, a gastric bypass surgery involves a 4- to 6-day hospital stay and 2 to 3 days for a laparoscopic approach. Most people can return to their normal activities within 3 to 5 weeks. Gastric bypass surgeries may cause dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome occurs when the small intestine fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach, as can happen following gastric bypass surgery. This occurs when food moves too quickly through the stomach and intestines. It causes nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and possibly diarrhea soon after eating. These symptoms are made worse by eating highly refined, high-calorie foods (like sweets). In some cases you may become so weak that you have to lie down until the symptoms pass. After gastric bypass surgery, you will need to train yourself to chew your food thoroughly, eat slowly and not overeat. Talk to your doctor about the exact level of risk gastric bypass surgery may pose for you. As with any major surgery, gastric bypass carries risks such as bleeding, infection and an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. A risk of death has been associated with gastric bypass surgery. It's important to follow your doctor's directions in preparing for gastric bypass surgery. Bypass surgery in unresectable distal gastric cancer. However, it does not have any of the risks of nutritional deficits associated with gastric bypass surgery. Risks common to all surgeries for weight loss include an infection in the incision, a leak from the stomach into the abdominal cavity or where the intestine is connected (resulting in an infection called peritonitis), and a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism). About one-third of all people having surgery for obesity develop gallstones or a nutritional deficiency condition such as anemia or osteoporosis. Most people who have gastric bypass surgery quickly begin to lose weight and continue to lose weight for up to 12 months. One study noted that people lost about one-third of their excess weight (the weight above what is considered healthy) in 1 to 4 years.1 Although some of the lost weight may be regained in time. The laparoscopic approach showed similar results, with 69% to 82% of excess weight lost over 12 to 54 months.

    What is a home remedy

Home Remedies - Facts or Quacks? Myths and legends often have their basis in a grain of truth. So I wondered if home remedies, alternative treatments, and folklore cures might also be based on truth. First, let’s try to define the phrase home remedy. There’s No Place Like Home The name itself proclaims that a home remedy is, well, a remedy that’s administered at home! Prescription drugs are often given at home as remedies, so we need to dig a little deeper. When you think of home remedy, don’t you think of some sort of cure or treatment that’s outside mainstream modern medicine? Me too. Let’s take a look at some choices. The Holistic View The dictionary defined holistic medicine as an approach to medical care that emphasizes the study of all aspects of a person's health, including physical, psychological, social, economic, and cultural factors. The holistic definition is very broad and could apply to many medical approaches. Peaches & Herbs? Many people associate herbs with home remedies. The definition for herbal remedy is a plant, or plant part, or an extract or mixture of these used to prevent, alleviate, or cure disease called also herbal medicine. That sounds like a good definition, although home remedies tend to encompass more than herbal remedies. What’s next? Folk Medicine Folk medicine is defined as traditional medicine especially as practiced by people isolated from modern medical services, and usually involving the use of plant-derived remedies on an empirical basis. Now we’re getting somewhere! The old-timers practiced medicine not based entirely on plants when modern medicine wasn’t available. Let’s dig a little deeper into the dictionary. Home At Last Finally we find the dictionary’s definition of home remedy: a simply prepared medication or tonic often of unproven effectiveness administered without prescription or professional supervision. So - it is a remedy prepared outside the realm of modern medicine, it’s not limited to herbs, but unproven effectiveness? I disagree. I can prove that some of the simplest home remedies have led to some of our greatest medical breakthroughs (but that’s another article). Is That Your Final Answer? Based on the research above, let’s agree to define a home remedy as follows: An experienced-based or even accidental remedy or cure prepared by common folk from herbs, plants, or other available ingredients when modern medical help was unavailable (or hadn’t been devised yet). That’s my answer, and I’m sticking to it! Want to try free home remedies for yourself? Use the resources below to learn more. You can save time, money, and embarrassment.

What is a light box introducing light boxes and light therapy

When I tell people I maintain a website about light boxes, the response I often get is: “What exactly is a light box?” In the simplest terms a light box is a type of light that uses a low-watt diffuse bulb to spread light throughout a small translucent box. They have several different uses. In art, a light box is used for stenciling, transferring designs or patterns, or tracing. For example, if you’ve ever gotten a tattoo, the tattoo artist may use a light box to trace out the pattern you’ve chosen or drawn for your tattoo with transferable inks, allowing him or her to transfer the pattern to your skin as a guideline before they start drawing on you. Or comic book inkers may use a form of tracing for their art finishing in comic books and graphic novels. Photography uses light boxes for looking at negatives and slides. With a light box to lay small transparent images on to view, the photographer has a much easier time figuring out what images he or she wants. Other uses include stained glass design, embossing, quilting, calligraphy, or lettering. Basically, any purpose that requires a form of tracing to transfer artwork from one medium to another can use a light box. Light Therapy: The Most Popular Use for Light Boxes Because a light box delivers diffuse, non-straining light in a variety of wavelengths, light boxes are sometimes used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression instigated by a lack of sunlight, especially in northern climates. Not only do light boxes deliver full-wave light for therapeutic reasons, they can also deliver UV light. Regular light used to treat SAD can be much too bright and intense. With constant exposure to bright light, you can strain your eyes. The diffuse light of a light box eliminates many eye strain problems and allows you to expose yourself to light for much longer and with more frequency. And because light boxes deliver light with little or no UV light, it’s a safer way of getting light therapy than exposure to sunlight. Most light boxes that deliver light to treat SAD should concentrate their light emission on the shorter wavelength blue light naturally delivered by the sun. They should be cool and diffuse, allowing you to stay close to your light box so you can expose yourself to the highest possible amount of light. Light boxes for SAD therapy should also be large enough to deliver light all over the user, and make allowances for the user’s movements during a normal day. You should be able to mount your light box on the ceiling, which will allow the light to diffuse throughout the room and provide you with the maximum amount of exposure when you want it throughout your day. You should also be aware of what times of day you should use your light box. Your therapist or physician should be able to tell you what the ideal times are, and you can adjust its location accordingly. Portable light boxes are also a good idea. Hard-to-use or inconvenient light delivery devices wind up in the closet. A light box on a stand, with a handle so you can easily move it around, is probably your best bet.

    What is a mangosteen

A mangosteen is an edible fruit but many people have never seen or tasted a mangosteen. The mangosteen should not be confused with the mango you’ve probably seen in your grocery store and may even enjoy regularly. They are completely different fruits and are in no way related. The mangosteen fruit currently only grows in Southeast Asia although attempts are being made to cultivate and grow it in other tropical climates. It’s a small fruit, about the same size as a tangerine. The skin of the fruit is a dark reddish/purplish color. The edible fruit inside is pure white and is said to be very sweet and delicious. But because the fruit is highly perishable and because it doesn’t continue to ripen after being picked, it’s not available as a fresh fruit in the United States, nor in many other countries in the world. But in southeast Asia where the mangosteen is widely available during harvest time, it is a prized fruit and is called the “Queen of Fruits.” It’s also the most expensive fruit at the markets in Southeast Asia. And because it is so highly demanded and highly prized, you’ll never see any fruits lying on the ground under the trees ( mangosteenzone/mangosteentree). None of the fruit is wasted. The reason why the mangosteen is generating so much interest in the Western parts of the world lately is because of the rind, or pericarp, of the mangosteen. The rind of the mangosteen has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, and in some cases thousands of years, to effectively and naturally treat numerous ailments and conditions. It’s commonly used to treat conditions such as: dysentery, various infections, eczema, diarrhea, urinary disorders; and for nearly any ailment between a person’s neck and waist. Xanthones, a type of anti-oxidant have been discovered in the mangosteen although it’s not a new discovery; just one that’s not been noticed much in Western parts of the world. To read some of the research that’s been done on the mangosteen and on xanthones go to pubmed. org and type in “xanthones” or “mangosteen.” Although the medicinal benefits of the mangosteen and the xanthones contained in it have not been officially evaluated by the FDA in the United States, juices and other products containing the mangosteen are gaining popularity and are being taken by many people as a supplement to enhance their health and well-being. One of the reasons more and more people feel mangosteen supplements are beneficial is because much of the research that’s been done on the xanthones contained in the mangosteen suggests that the xanthones contain very potent antioxidant properties that may strengthen the immune system; neutralize free radicals in the body; help with intestinal health; and give a person more energy; plus there have been numerous testimonial from people who feel taking a mangosteen supplement has helped them regain health when they were dealing with serious illnesses such as cancer. I have been taking a mangosteen supplement for a little over a year. I started taking the supplement because I wanted to enhance my health and feeling of well-being. I do feel better since I started taking it. I have more energy; get fewer headaches than I used to; and catch fewer colds. What is accutane and is it right for me

Accutane is a prescribed medication used for treating serious forms of acne that haven't responded well to other treatments such as nodular acne and cystic acne. What is Acne? Acne is formed when excess oils clog skin pores and cause a build-up to occur. If left alone, they, in turn, manifest themselves into pimples. This is only the beginning. Sometimes, these pimples can turn into nodules, which are often painful and remain on the skin for a longer period of time. Over that time, the nodules can turn into cysts, which often require draining by a physician. This type of acne can persist for weeks, or sometimes, even months, and is one of the most severe types. If the treatment you have sought isn't responding, you might consider Accutane as a possible treatment. There are, however, some things you should know before making the decision to take this medication. Acne Treatment There are literally hundreds of topical solutions available over the counter. Many times they work. If your acne is of the severe nature and doesn't respond to an over the counter topical solution, it may be you need to talk with your doctor about a prescribed treatment. One such prescribed treatment is called Accutane. Accutane Side Effects Accutane has been found to be effective in treating more severe types of acne, but can have serious side effects. Before taking this drug, your pharmacist will most likely ask you to read and sign a form stating you understand the possible side effects. You can only begin treatment after verifying you understand and agree to them. Thinking of starting a family any time soon? One of the most serious possible side effects of taking Accutane is that it can cause possible birth defects in unborn children. It may even cause a woman to miscarry during pregnancy, premature birth, or stillbirth. It is advised that women who are or might be pregnant do not take this medication. Doctors are also requiring women taking the drug to take a pregnancy test every month so they can stop taking it immediately if it yields a positive result. Physicians also advise against taking Accutane if you plan to become pregnant, and say you should not get pregnant for at least a month after you have stopped taking the drug. Another harmful side effect of Accutane is the development of mental problems in patients that can even result in suicide. Symptoms of these problems include: feeling sad or anxious, feeling empty, irritability, anger, loss in social activities, sleeping too much or too little, thoughts of suicide, and changes in weight or appetite. These are only a few of the possible side effects associated with the depression this drug is said to cause. If you experience any of these symptoms, or others you feel may be leading to depression, consult your doctor immediately. Accutane can be a preferred treatment when nothing else has worked to clear up you acne. Severe acne can be very physically painful, and can cause social discomfort as well. Discuss with your doctor whether or not the benefits of taking this medication outweigh the possible side effects, and if it is the right treatment choice for you. What is acid reflux or gerd

Acid Reflux is a disease commonly known as GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. This is described by the condition in which the stomach’s liquid content refluxes in the esophagus. This liquid can cause damage and inflammation in the lining of your esophagus. The liquid that is refluxed contains pepsin and acid which is produced by the stomach. Pepsin is the enzyme which starts the digestion of the proteins found in our stomach. The regurgitated liquid can also contain bile that backs-up from the duodenum which attaches the small intestines to the stomach. The most damaging ingredient in acid reflux is acid. Acid Reflux is known as a chronic condition and takes a lifetime to deal with. A chronic condition is achieved when there is injury to the lining of the esophagus. If treatment is applied it must be continuous or the problems will return and so will GERD. Our body has ways to protect itself from the destructive effects of acid reflux. Reflux usually occurs when a person is in a supine or laying down position because the refluxed liquid can freely flow back to the stomach. If awake, a person swallows repeatedly whether there is reflux or not. When a person swallows, reflux liquid flows back into the stomach. The salivary glands produce saliva containing bicarbonate, and every time the person swallows, the saliva containing bicarbonate travels down to the esophagus. The bicarbonate acts as the neutralizer in the small amount of acid which is left in the esophagus. In fact, the reflux of the stomach's liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most standard individuals. One study has found that reflux occurs as regularly in normal individuals as in patients who are diagnosed with GERD. In patients with GERD however, the refluxed liquid contains more acid, and the acid remains in the esophagus for longer periods of time. Certain conditions make a person vulnerable to acid reflux. A person who has GERD can also have elevated hormone levels. If you feel you are suffering from GERD it is advisable to seek medical advice from your doctor.

What is add what natural remedies can help alleviate symptoms

ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, is a growing problem facing children today. ADD is a type of hyperactivity disorder most commonly found in children, but it can also be present in adults. It is currently the most commonly diagnosed behavior disorder in children and is believed to afflict more than two million children. Ritalin and similar stimulating drugs are often used to treat this illness. However, studies indicate use of these drugs may have long-term effects on the brain long after its effective use is over. Because of this, many parents seek out use of homeopathic or natural remedies for treatment. Use of non mainstream treatments is heavily debated and studies showing effectiveness are largely inconclusive. Diet Modification of the diet is reported to have lasting positive results on children suffering from ADD. The popularity of this theory was advanced by Dr. Benjamin Feingold who claimed the increase in children diagnosed with ADD directly coincided with the increase in artificial sweeteners and preservatives in food. Reducing the amount of these in the diet can produce the desired outcome. Sugar, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and caffeine can all contribute to undesired behavior evident in children with ADD. Reducing the amounts of these types of food items will be beneficial and help with overall health as they have little or no nutritional value. Vitamins Using vitamins such as B6 have been reported to increase alertness in children suffering from ADD, though no conclusive studies have been accepted. Zinc was also a popular vitamin to use to assist in reducing the behavioral effects of ADD. Currently, using multivitamins to enhance the diet is reported to be the best option. Herbal Remedies Caution should be used when mixing herbs as certain doses of herbs and certain combinations can cause harm. It is suggested to consult with a homeopath for advice on which herbs to use before treatment. Use of Pycnogenol, an extract of pine tree bark, is claimed to improve the attention span; however studies have been inconclusive. Improvements in attention, blood flow to the brain, cognitive retention and stress relief are reported to be available in certain herbs such as ginkgo, ginseng, brahmi, green oats and gotu kola. Audio Visual Stimulation There have been reported cases of great success using audio video stimulation. A process called entrainment is used to alter patterns of brainwaves. This method is not yet widely popular but has reported significant successful treatments. It is an inexpensive treatment; however it is not covered by most insurance companies. Research all available treatment options for ADD before committing to one. Using various herbs and drugs can have a negative effect, so use with caution and under the supervision of a physician or homeopath. With the growing frequency of ADD diagnoses, finding effective cures is of utmost importance.

    What is an antioxidant

An antioxidant is a chemical that reduces the rate of particular oxidation reactions in a specific context, where oxidation reactions are chemical reactions that involve the transfer of electrons from a substance to an oxidising agent. Antioxidants are particularly important in the context of organic chemistry and biology: all living cells contain complex systems of antioxidant chemicals and/or enzymes to prevent chemical damage to the cells' components by oxidation. The importance and complexity of antioxidants in biology is reflected in a medical literature of more than 142,000 scholarly articles. A diet containing antioxidants from plants are required for good health since plants are an important source of organic antioxidant chemicals. Antioxidants are widely used as ingredients in dietary supplements that are used for health purposes such as preventing cancer and heart disease. However, while many studies have suggested benefits for antioxidant supplements, several large clinical trials have failed to clearly demonstrate a benefit for the formulations tested, and excess supplementation may be harmful. Antioxidants are chemicals that reduce oxidative damage to cells and biochemicals. Researchers have found high correlation between oxidative damage and the occurrence of disease. For example, LDL oxidation is associated with cardiovascular disease. The process leading to atherogenesis, artherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease is complex, involving multiple chemical pathways and networks, but the precursor is LDL oxidation by free radicals, resulting in inflammation and formation of plaques. Research suggests that consumption of antioxidant-rich foods reduces damage to cells and biochemicals from free radicals. This may slow down, prevent, or even reverse certain diseases that result from cellular damage, and perhaps even slow down the natural aging process. Since the discovery of vitamins, it has been recognized that antioxidants in the diet are essential for healthful lives. More recently, a large body of evidence has accumulated that suggests supplementation of the diet with various kinds of antioxidants can improve health and extend life. Many nutraceutical and health food companies now sell forms of antioxidants as dietary supplement. These supplements may include specific antioxidant chemicals, like resveratrol (from grape seeds), combinations of antioxidants, like the "ACES" products that contain beta carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin E and Selenium, or specialty herbs that are known to contain antioxidants such as green tea and jiaogulan. Disclaimer The information presented here should not be interpreted as medical advice. If you need more information about Antioxidants, please consult your physician or a qualified specialist.
