So you wanna make music and change the world

What do Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Mozart all have in common? And what do they have in common with practically every other artist who's creativity has changed the world? They are all unique. But there is something in common. They each changed the popular music of their times by combining already popular forms in a new way. Elvis - on that famous and fateful day in Sun Studios in Memphis he let it all loose and brought it all together again differently... the blues, country, gospel and regional elements that were his influences in his youth all came together into rockabilly, rock and roll, something that had not been heard before. Elvis on Ed Sullivan also brought together the new music form and the new medium - television in a new way which has influenced generations of rock icons to first pick up their guitar. Bob Dylan... they pulled the plug on his concert when he dared to bring out electric instruments, drums and a backbeat to his folk and protest music. But Dylan had his own vision of his music and it contained his influences from Woody Guthrie but also the last decade of rock and roll and other influences.. again.. he combined popular music forms in a new way. The Beatles... well they set the world on fire with their style and their hair cuts and all that. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan - still one of the great moments in rock and television history. But do you know that in the mid 60's they didnt release a CD for almost two years and then came out with Sgt Pepper - the orchestation, song structure and the bringing together of elements in a completely new way is what made history. Mozart? Well, see the great movie, Amadeus, and you will understand better than I can illustrate here. But it is another case in point. Another one that could be mentioned here is Johnny Cash. As Bruce Springsteen said (not an exact quote)... Johnny Cash broke down barriers to communication and artistic styles and, not only did he break those barriers down, but he showed why it is important to do so. Cash's music contains many elements brought together for the first time in different parts of his career. So the point...? If you want to make music that changes the world, don't just be the latest kid on the block, the latest rapper in the hood, the latest rocker in the backstreet clubs. Do something that has not been done before by combining elements that are already popular in a new and creative way. Perhaps this unique combining of other art forms is so impactful because it aligns with the derivation of the word "art" itself. The derivation of the word art basically means... to join together. The world needs great artists. Start!

Some ideas for all that new stuff

With Christmas still a warm memory, there’s all this new stuff in your life; your friends and family have showered you with the latest gadgets and gizmos. Now what are you going to do with all these new toys? Before you get too far into the manuals, and before you throw out the old stuff, take an inventory of what you have and what replaces what. Before you pile up the old TV with this week’s trash, consider what can be done with that still usable item. First, may I suggest you consider donating some of your replaced items to charity; the world has so many people in it that have a lot less than you do, so consider sharing some of it. If it still works, it’s donatable. If you just can’t part with it, then consider adding it to your cellar work area or the sun porch. You don’t need to get another cable box for it if you’re on cable, just split the signal out from another feeder line as it comes out of the wall and you should have limited control over the channels. I put the old, smaller TV in the kitchen for those cooking channels and comedy shows for while you prepare and clean up, all I did was split the signal before it enters the TV; that way I see the same thing in the living room and kitchen, and still have full access to all the channels, as long as both rooms want to watch the same thing. If you got a new home entertainment system, you can move the older one downstairs into the cellar and hook up some outside speakers for those Summer parties, or perhaps up into the kid’s room for their own enjoyment. Did you pick up a new MP3 player or iPod? There’s a little device that I’ve found useful for these personal audio players, and it’s a little transmitter that plugs into the headphone jack, runs on AAA batteries and transmits your signal to an FM frequency on the radio. Very cool, and it works great in the car too. If the device stores files on a smart card or secure digital device or other media, keep an eye on the post-holiday sales, you may be able to double or triple your storage space for a low cost; if your device has removable media, it should be able to handle the biggest size available in that storage media type. Also a little patch cord from your player headphone jack to the stereo input on your home entertainment system will have you rocking to your portable MP3s in the comfort of your own living room. It’s a new year and you should put a new message on your answering machine. I found some great old audio files online suitable for a greeting, but wanted to add something to them, and so they went into AV’s Music Morpher Gold, and after applying a few filters and effects, out came a fresh, personalized greeting. You could also simply use your own voice and apply some effects and produce a new and fresh greeting for your callers. So enjoy your new toys, and do consider recycling or donating your older devices, and enjoy your new year. BIO: Wayne Rice is a freelance journalist, copywriter, photographer and artist. Songwriter confessions 4

Once a recording studio reaches a certain size, it has to have a studio cat. That seems to be Nature's unwritten law and you resist it at your peril. It happens as you're unwrapping the new Lexicon reverb unit that will take you up to the next level of sound. Before the carton has been cleared away, there is a scratching at the studio door. And you really don't have any say about the applicant. Apparently there is some mystical studio cat network, and when that unheard alarm goes off, Ma Nature picks the kitty and sends it to the door. On this particular morning, I opened the door and there was Macca, alias Mac Daddy, alias the self-propelled wrecking crew. Scat!: I said and cat strolled past me and boinged onto my favorite chair where it proceeded to chew the corners off the guitar tuner. I reached for the pliers to pull its teeth out. A moment later I was nursing four bloody slashes on the back of my hand. We decided to call it a draw. Well, the cat did, actually. So Macca became the studio cat, which excused him from catching mice, lizards or preying mantises, but gave him time to run up and down the curtains, get hopelessly tangled in the midi cables, and slurp lukewarm coffee from my Graceland mug while I'm fetching a blank CD from the cupboard. He can also be heard on a couple of songs, hacking up a furball solo in the background. I've even got him slamming the window on a track called This is My List which you can hear on the website. The vocal was so good I didn't want to do it again, but I did make him sign a royalty waiver. He used up eight lives all at once one afternoon when I answered the phone in the middle of a multi-harmony overdub. From the corner of my eye, I saw him flash up onto the console where he took turns pushing those cute little faders up or down while stepping on the PC keyboard at random. Smoke started coming from the speakers. I launched myself backwards . The back of my chair hit the mixer. The entire structure of 24 track mixer, keyboard and rack of reverbs, compressors and valve pre-amps started heading for the floor. Luckily my chair tipped me onto the floor, so most of the equipment landed on my neck. The cat went sailing out the door and through several time zones before landing in the bushes. Thirty sweaty minutes later, I had everything back in place and the Valium was starting to kick in. There was a scratching at the door. Opening it, I found Macca with a peace offering. There are so many things you can do in a studio with a freshly killed mouse. I said: OK but the mouse stays outside and-a one two three Copyright © Bill Dollar 2005

    Songwriting concepts

What makes a great song? It's a big question, and one that has been written about endlessly in an attempt to unravel the "formula" for creating a world dominating smash hit record. Sure, there are some basic rules and if you were to examine a handful of the most successful or popular songs of the last four decades, they do have certain things in common. Intro, verse, bridge, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, middle 8, chorus, chorus etc springs to mind! We can examine things like structure, melody and production very easily but for a greater understanding of the "smash", we need to look at concepts. Have you ever wondered why some songs seem to "connect" with people and others don't? When asked why people like a song, they will usually say something along the lines of "I like the tune" or "it's got a great beat". Very rarely will the average music consumer tell you they love a song because of the clever way it's been written, or because the music sounds like it was really hard to play. People simply aren't interested in that stuff. They're interested in the elusive combination of a great melody and a lyric that they can relate to, and preferably sing along to. Of course this isn't true of all genres of music, for the purposes of this piece I'm referring mainly to pop music, as this is the domain of the hit single! Yes there are lots of brilliant, intelligent musicians and songwriters out there whose music never isn't even near the radio and probably never will be. Whilst the music industry is partly responsible for this, it doesn't change the fact that (generally speaking) if you want to have a big song, you have to be able to connect with lots of people. And that means delivering a message that is clear, simple, catchy and easy to relate to. This means thinking very carefully about what you're song is actually about. It can be so easy to get wrapped up in the details of the music itself, such as which chords to use? How the melody should go? How should the snare drum sound?) Sometimes the central concept of the song can often end up as an afterthought. As a producer and songwriter I get to hear lot of demos from new artists, some of whom are quick to tell me very confidently which of their songs are the singles, or "radio friendly". More often than not, the song they point out is the one they've laboured over the most, or the song with the lyrics about their ex girlfriend / boyfriend. Sometimes this can mean their lyrics that are so personal to them that they're in danger of not meaning anything to anyone else! So it helps a lot if you are able to step back from your work and ask yourself - if I had never heard this song, what would I think about it? Do I know what it's about? More importantly, do I care what it's about? Let's look at a couple of recent example of the smash hit song. Love him or hate him, James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" was undeniably one of the big pop songs of 2005, launching a multi-million selling worldwide career for the artist. Cynics will point out that there was a major label and some powerful marketing behind him, which is also true, but they were marketing something that was already going to be relatively easy to sell, because of the simplicity of the concept, the music and the lyrics. I don't think it's too unreasonable to suggest that without this song, the level of his success wouldn’t been as great, and it certainly wouldn't have happened as quickly. The sentiment behind Blunt's song is extremely simple. Perhaps this is why people connected with it? It's essentially a "grass is greener" song, where the main character is imagining a relationship with a stranger he's just encountered. It's also very memorable, even from a first listen. You may not know all the words to the verses straight away, but the chorus is instant. There is never a moment where you're not sure what the lyrics are because "you can't hear them properly". Now imagine the same music, but with cryptic, clever lyrics that only you understand. Does the song still have the same ability to connect with a large audience? Or just to you? ( This can lead us into a whole other area - who are you writing music for, but that’s another topic in itself! ) Now try it the other way around ; take the lyrics and sing them with a new melody over some complex chords in a clever time signature - is it still a hit? it's very unlikely! In 2007, Rihanna's "Umbrella" had a similar impact on the world of pop. The song is built on an infectious beat and very few chords, and again there is a strong concept behind this song. If you look at the lyrics it's more than just another "I love you baby" type thing, but it also has the a very simple main hook, which hits you the first time you get to what I call the "pay off", the "ella - ella - ella - eh - eh - eh" bit, an infuriatingly catchy modern pop moment! Would the song stand up without this hook / gimmick? Yes I think it would, because the gimmick sounds like an addition to the concept, not the concept itself. In other words "Umbrella" is already strong without it, but as a pop record this hook puts into a whole other league. What I'm getting at here is the importance of considering exactly what it is you're are saying in your songs. It’s not usually enough just to have a great beat or a great riff, try and think of these things are the starting point! It's also important not to confuse "simple" ideas with "dumb" ideas. Writing complicated pop lyrics is relatively easy compared with writing good simple pop lyrics, and great lyricists will write on several levels providing you with deeper meanings if you want to look for them. This is a skill that is harder than it sounds and can take a long time to develop. Early Motown records are a good example of this sort of thing, where the writers provided a catchy "surface" meaning that sounded like great pop music, but underneath there was often another motivation (sometimes with social or political overtones) Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye were among those who dabbled with this sort of writing, and were responsible for creating some staple pop hits that were accessible to everyone, but often had a second "layer" of meaning. So you don't have to "dumb down" you're masterpiece to get your message across, just try disguising it a bit, you'll be adding depth to your work and you'll be in good company! Of course the most important part in focusing on the concept of your song is having a concept to begin with. What do people want to hear about? Themes of love and loss are the most popular, anecdotes about feeding your cat will not grab people's attention the same way. If you spend a bit of time considering what you're actually saying, and how people will interpret your "message", you should be able give your work a better chance of connecting with your audience. Instead of spending three hours on the snare drum, spend three hours on making your central idea something people can relate to, as generally people don't listen to songs because of how the drums sound! And you never know, you may even be giving yourself a greater chance at that world dominating chart-topping success in the process.....

Soothing music the native american flute

Native Americans are eager to share their ancestry with their families and friends. One of the ways they do this is through their music, particularly through the music of the Native American flute. They want to ensure that their children have a strong link with their ancient culture, and music is an excellent way to teach non-Native Americans about this culture as well. Mothers of small children often find that Native American flute music is very soothing for their babies. It seems to have a tranquil and calming effect on children. Songs played on the Native American flute can be introduced during naptime and before bedtime to calm children down. The music often puts children to sleep within just a few minutes. Experts have also recommended Native American flute music to families with small babies that have a hard time getting to sleep. This music also represents an excellent tool for calming down a baby in situations where there may be difficult transitions for such young children, such as when many visitors come to the home. It is often difficult for small babies to adjust to the confusion and noise created by a large number of people at special occasions, and playing Native American flute music can help to calm a baby down in these circumstances. The music of the Native American flute is very soft, and it creates a wonderful, soothing background for many situations. It is just the sound for keeping babies calm when there are a lot of people in the environment. Babies seem to focus on the flute sounds instead of on the loud noises generated by crowds. Having flute music playing in a room makes it easier for them to adjust to visitors. Of course, adults will also enjoy the music of the Native American flute. It is easy to find interesting and unique Native American flute music on the Internet, since many online stores offer selections of alternative music. It is also possible to purchase Native American flutes and sheet music. Several vendors offer musical compositions for the flute, and they sell Native American flutes as well. Native American flute music is an excellent way to learn about and enjoy the special features of Native American culture. And since songs are often linked to memories, this music offers a good way to preserve the memory of special times.

Stand up for love destiny s help

“And how can I pretend that I don't know what's going on... when every minute, every minute another soul is gone.” Sounds familiar? This is an excerpt from the lyrics of a Destiny's Child's song entitled “Stand up for Love.” The song was released under Columbia records last 2005. This inspiring and empowering pop music got hyped up due to its message that was used in the wake of one of America's worst calamity, Hurricane Katrina. Stand Up For Love, written by David Foster, became popular with its positive and engaging message that managed to instill a sense of cooperation and patriotism among the American people. It has somehow relieved the Americans from the stress and anxiety that was brought by the calamity. Anxiety, which is described as an overwhelming fear, apprehension, and worry --- has struck many Americans. Those who felt agitation did not only include residents from New Orleans who were hardest hit by Katrina. Even those miles away from the calamity zone felt great unease about the apparent lack of preparation of local and federal agencies to manage such a large-scale disaster. One can just imagine the tremendous undertaking every person has go into just to avert the adverse effects of this typhoon. Hurricane Katrina, which was considered as one of the deadliest tempests to hit America, destroyed 81 billion dollars worth of property and claimed 1,836 lives. Hurricane Katrina caused panic or anxiety attacks as people tried to flee the calamity area. The lack of safe shelter made their worries grow stronger. People were emotionally, physically, financially, and spiritually shattered by the storm. At the lowest point of their lives, the victims of Hurricane Katrina found a new sense of hope through the song Stand Up For Love. With the positive and mind-awakening lyrics, the song, not only rose to the top of the pop charts but also catapulted the morale of New Orleans. Instead of wallowing in their grief, the people of New Orleans reinforced their hopes by standing up and moving to rebuild their town. Some would even dare say that the very sound of Destiny's Child's phenomenal song somewhat acted as anxiety relief to those who lost almost everything to Hurricane Katrina. Unlike any costly and short-range effects of the usual anxiety relief medication, the song was able to powerfully yet subtly influence people all across America to take part in the massive relief efforts. Aside from the picturesque beauty of the female trio, the Stand Up For Love video shows clips of Hurricane Katrina's destructive effects on people from different walks of lifepelling as it was presented, the music video, didn't only showcase the beauty of the song but the reality and benefits of helping one another in times of national emergency. Indeed, the music played an important role in alleviating the pain and restoring the positive mindset of the people – which is anxiety relief on a massive scale. The song was actually used again to celebrate the 2005 World' Children's Day. Therefore, though the song did not actually reign supreme in the music charts, it has undeniably made a positive impact in New Orleans and in other parts of America. The soothing melody and musicality of the song to be highly commended. The lyrics were also magnificently crafted, “making waves” that touched the heart of the American people.

    Star disease

Having reached the peak of the mountain named "The world of Music" nothing left as to go down. The working plan sounds the following way – to reach the highest point and then to go down with the same speed. The second reason is in the so-called "star" disease. The 90 % are infected and the complications are reflected in desire to start a solo carrier. The percent correlation is the following – just one ex-member of from ten bands opens his talent in solo carrier. But there is one incontestable fact that prevents solo. It’s an audience. People joint together to give the support to one favorite band. When this band broke up fans are divided into several parts. Let’s analyze everything. For example the number of fans equals to five millions. The band consists of five participants. When the band is over every participant has one million fans. Devoted ones leave to support their favorites. Perhaps it is the reason of failure of many bands. Next reason is in the "hidden" talent. A lot of singers think that they are able to open the talent only solo. Some critics think it is the complication of the "star" disease. The syndrome of "hidden" talent is accompanied by being independent. But only one percent deserves the recognition. The best example is Robbie Williams who changed the style radically. The rest 99 % are left with the inferiority complex. What is the football player without the command? What is the dancer without the partner? What is the president without the Cabinet of Ministers? Start your own sheet music collection

Starting a sheet music collection is easy, once you’ve decided what you want to collect. Sheet music is inexpensive and relatively easy to find. You can find music at yard sales, antique shows and on the internet. Only music that is very scarce or rare is expensive. Most pieces can be found at a price between three and twenty five dollars. Extremely rare sheet music can carry a price of up to a thousand dollars, but few pieces fall into this category. You will find music in any color graphic or subject matter you are looking for. People collect sheet music in many ways. Sometimes sheet music is collected by the genre or songs. You could put together a history of music in America with a sheet music collection. You could do this with the entire history of our country or concentrate on one time period or decade. The possibilities are endless - be creative when building your collection! Songs have been written about most important events in our history, including wars, plane crashes and natural disasters. Themes such as love or the evolution of images of women in music are popular themes for sheet music collections. Other collectors focus on one composer or cover artist. Ragtime music from the early twentieth century is popular with collectors of vintage sheet music. This music is considered the foundation of modern jazz music. A ragtime music collection looks great displayed in a room decorated in the Early American style. And the cover art on rag time sheet music looks great displayed in picture frames on a wall or sofa table. Music written by famous composers is popular among sheet music collectors. This music is readily available in all music genres. Other collectors focus on rare or vintage sheet music. The value of these documents depends largely on the condition of the sheets. Pieces in mint condition will be more expensive. Most sheet music isn’t found in perfect condition. The spine of the sheet was usually broken to make the score stand up in the music stand. Spills, tears and names written on the covers are common because sheet music was often used at parties. Sheet music displayed in a family room or bar area makes a great focal point. Even people who don’t collect sheet music use it in a display of other collectibles. Collectors of beer, whisky, golf, military, cigars or trains can find sheet music to accent their collection. A few pieces of sheet music with great cover art enhance a display of other collectibles. Collectors of memorabilia from movies or Broadway productions often look for sheet music written for the production. Any sheet music that isn’t displayed should be stored properly to preserve the condition. Store each set of sheet music in a plastic baggie like those used for comic book collections. Place those bags in a large plastic storage container to protect them from being ripped or crumpled. Store your containers in a dry place away from sunlight or moisture, which can damage the music.

    Starting a mobile disco

The Pro's (and woes!) of becoming a Mobile D. J! So how do you become a Mobile D. J?, easy!, just call yourself one!. There are no diploma's or qualifications and no graduation ceremony. However the time may come where you are called upon to demonstrate your D. J'ing skills and often this will be in front of 100's of people at your first gig. Entertaining such a a large number of people can be a very daunting and nerve racking task. Not just music and flashing lights Mobile D. J'ing is different to club or radio D. J'ing. Just spending a fortune on the very latest equipment and latest chart music won't make you a successful D. J or get you re-booked. Being a Mobile D. J is also about being an entertainer, rather then just being a Jukebox surrounded by lots of pretty lights!. You will also have to play a lot of music genres which you may not otherwise choose to listen to by choice. A successful D. J is one who plays to his or her Audience, who can break the ice at difficult functions and who isn't out to satisfy their own ego's. Most D. J's learn to "read" the audience, and are frequently watching the dancefloor to gauge what music will work next. At Mobile Functions such as Weddings, your audience may take some time to get onto the dancefloor and this is where Microphone work is important in order to break the ice, make your audience feel welcome and encourage them onto the dancefloor. Where and how can I learn D. J skills and get advice? Some people simply may not be cut out to D. J. Others may pick up the skills in a few months, others may take a year or longer. There is no hard or fast rule to learning the basics. The best, and often the most successful route to becoming a D. J is by helping another D. J at weekends. Consider volunteering your services to another D. J locally. Helping out as a "Roadie" may not be financially rewarding but you are essentially learning new skills for free, which would cost you Ј100's on a course. Most D. J's will often cover your expenses and refreshments, some may even pay you, in return for your help, but don't expect to live off it, after all they are doing you a favour by teaching you a trade, and sharing their knowledge. Learning to D. J by becoming a Roadie is the fastest way to learn the business and by actually watching another Professional D. J at work can teach you more than in a classroom or College environment. Most D. J's themselves got into the business this way, so don't be afraid to ask. What music will I need? This is entirely dependant on the type of functions which you are attending. Most Mobile DJ's will set themselves up to cover all types of functions from Childrens' Parties to 75th Wedding Anniversaries, and this means playing music to all age groups. Ideally you will need to invest in virtually all types of Genres. Rock & Roll, 1960's, 1970's, Disco, Funk, Soul, Motown, 1980's, 1990's as well as the latest chart and club dance music. If you are setting yourself up as a specialist DJ, offering services for one age group or type of function, then this will be a lot easier to fund and build a music collection. However you may wish to gauge the demand for that type of music and DJ in your area. What Equipment do I need to buy? Again it's not the equipment which entertains, it's the D. J. By having the latest equipment it won't make you any better as a D. J. It is possible to start up on a budget of Ј1000, which will get you a sound system and a few lighting effects. If your budget won't stretch to this, then you may need to consider buying 2nd hand or hiring the equipment. More information on choosing equipment is covered on another article. Any good reason to start off by helping another D. J, is that you gain the experience and also find out if D. J'ing suits you BEFORE spending a lot of money and committment on buying equipment. Buying a comprehensive music library is far more important than how much lighting you have, and should be your first consideration. You can build up your lighting, and upgrade your sound system (if required) once the work starts coming in to justify it. What else do I need? Committment, dedication and enthusiasm is a must. As is patience and a good sense of humour. By definition, most Mobile D. J's work the weekends, so if you get a good reputation and a full diary, you may have to cut down on your own personal social activities, and this can also put a strain on relationships, so make sure your partner / spouse is also agreeable!. From a professional prospective, you should also obtain some level of PLI (Public Liability Insurance), as a business within the UK it is a requirement to have some minimum level of insurance cover in order to protect you in the event of causing harm to a third party through accident or neglect. The amount of PLI cover required varies from Ј2 million to Ј10 million. You may find that Ј2 Million cover is adequate for your area, although some hotel chains may insist on a minimum of Ј5 million to work at their venues. You may be asked to produce evidence of your PLI cover before being allowed to set up in some Hotels, and Council run establishments, so it is wise to get cover sooner, rather than later. How about a D. J Course or Workshop? These are few and far between especially in the UK, and usually aimed at teaching you beatmixing or turntable skills, which are of little use to the Novice Mobile D. J. If you are aiming for club work, then you may find a course to be of interest, however these courses have limited use on the Mobile Circuit. D. J courses can cost between Ј100 and Ј1000s ($100 - $3000). Like any industry there are risks, so it is important to find out exactly what the course involves and whether the information is of any value to you before parting with your money!. Some courses may of little use, others may teach you the basics find out exactly what each one offers and weigh up the benefits to you. If you are still in education and want to find a list of official College / University courses on further education opportunities in media, radio, stage and technical then ask at your High School for further information.

Steps to create your own music video

: Music has always attracted people since generations. If you are one who loves music, you may wish to create a music album or video of your own. Creating a music album needs some DVD’s or CD’s, video capturing software, video editing software, good imagination, time and patience. Useful tips: 1. You should use music or video from a CD or DVD you have purchased and not you have downloaded. 2. Always pick a song that matches with your prospective video clips. Action clips won’t go right with romantic songs. 3. Never put entire episode to music instead choose best parts of the episode and combine them together such that one flow to the other.

You can also imagine TV previews as shown on the television. 4. Creativity counts a lot in making a good music video. Steps to make the video: 1. The first and most important thing is to plan the video you wish to make. If you plan well everything will go right and you will get some good results.

You should pick any song that you like and at the same time the song should have an anime feel. It’s not necessary that you choose pop or rock but anything that could be really rocking. 2. Video that you are going to make should have music matching to it. Most of the rock times have a mix of mild verse and explosive chorus. After you have selected the tune, you should decide that which of the video clips will go right with music tune.

    3. Next you need to pick your video which is going to be very time consuming. You can import selected MPEG or AVI format into the CD’s you have purchased. Many software programs are also available that could help you in doing so or you can use a video capture card to get same results. After importing all the clips, you should slice them appropriately. 4. Use editing programs such as Adobe Premier and Pinnacle to slice the song lyrics.

These editing programs will import the music along with the video so that you can preview your work. 5. Lastly you need to burn your work into a CD to save it for future. For more information visit our recommended website music-future

Stop the pain guitar book overwhelm

You've probably noticed that there is an almost infinite number of guitar tuition books that you can buy. And if you're anything like me, you've probably bought dozens of them. You've also probably noticed that some of the books would take SEVERAL lifetimes to master! And would it be fair to say that sometimes you don't know where to start? So much information, so little time! Don't worry, you're not alone... I used to get totally overwhelmed by my guitar book collection. I used to pick up a book and not really know where to start. I usually would play around with a book for a week or two, and then move onto another book...even when I hadn't mastered what I had learnt from the book. End result? A feeling of frustration! The good thing about this though was that this frustration inspired me to create a system to get the most out of my books. Let's take a look at it now... ***Step One: Quick Overview*** Find a guitar book that you would like to work on. Read the front and back covers only. What are some things that you think the book might help you with? Please write these down now. ***Step Two: Define Your Purpose*** Have a quick think about your musical goals. With your goals in mind, write down your purpose for studying the book. What EXACTLY would you like to get from the book? Make it specific. If you feel that the book is not totally relevant to your goals right now, then DON'T study it. It will be a waste of your valuable time. Instead, find another book that is more relevant. ***Step Three: Preview The Book*** Read the table of contents. As you read it, ask yourself..."What ONE section of this book will help me the most with my current musical goals?". Once you've finished reading the table of contents, choose the ONE section that you feel will help you the most. ***Step Four: Detailed Reading*** Read the section that you chose in Step Three. Do you still feel that it will really help you achieve your musical goals? If you do...great! If not...just repeat Step Three and choose another section. Once you've read through the whole section, choose the ONE thing in it that you think will help you the most. It could be a specific lick, theoretical concept, chord progression etc. The idea is to choose the one thing that will benefit your guitar playing the most. Life is too short to practice things that aren't INCREDIBLY important to your musical development! ***Step Five: Get To Work*** Practice the thing that you chose in Step Four. Practice it like a maniac! Really work hard to integrate it into your playing or knowledge. Keep working on it daily until you feel that you have mastered it. Depending on what you chose, this could take hours, days, weeks, months of even years! I hope you find this method works for you. Dust off those books now, and get to work!

Succeed in music biz with proper planning

There are many experienced professionals in the music biz who will tell you that the music biz is all business. I agree. With any business, proper planning is the key to success in the music biz. This article describes some things to consider for your success in the music biz. Think of your career as a business. Have you assembled your business plan? How do you plan to market? What is your mission statement? Are you going to start your own record label to be distributed by a major, or are you going to use the full service resources of a major label? These are all important issues that you have to have in order to really succeed in the music biz. A music biz plan helps you resolve these issues well in advance. A lot of recording artists enter the music biz with one big goal “to make it”. These artists see themselves on a big stage in front of thousands of screaming fans, but often that is as far as the planning goes. Artists rarely conduct the planning that it takes to succeed in the music biz. I’ve yet to speak to an artist who has a business plan. In my experience if you don’t have a business plan, then you shouldn’t plan on being in business. A good business plan will cover your business and legal structure, your marketing model, financial projections, goals, benchmarks and finally what you’ll do after the your career is over. I’ve met many recording artists who treat the music biz like a glorified hobby. They often don’t have business cards, a website or in many cases, a valid email address. Many more artists don’t have the marketing structure in place that will allow them to get the attention from fans or record labels. Remember that the music biz is all business. If you treat your music career as a hobby then you might as well just play your music for friends and family and be content with people pretending to take you seriously. Getting attention and interest from record labels is easy if you are on the radar. Many Artist and Repertoire Representatives (A&R Reps) agree that if an artist is making it happen on for themselves (by selling a couple thousand CD’s locally or selling out a 2,000 seat venue) they will get on the major label radar. You can’t get on the radar of the record labels (or your fans) if you are flying by the seat of your pants and living on a prayer. As a wise person once said “failing to plan is planning to fail”.
