National parks get out of your car

The national park system in the United States is full of beauty and surprises. Still, you’ll be wondering if they’re worth it when you run into the crowds of other visitors. Road Side Viewing Sure, millions of people visit our national parks each year, miles of cars creep through at a painfully slow pace, parking lots are full and busses are packed. Cars stop in the middle of the road to view wildlife, backing up traffic for miles. Is it all worth it? Should I just get stuck in a Los Angeles traffic jam with DVD player showing some nice mountain scenery?! I travel through the Rocky Mountain Nation Park, using Trail Ridge Road, on a regular basis throughout the summer to reach some of my favorite fly fishing spots on the other side of the divide. I also have hiked many of the park trails. Let me tell you, I have seen the frustration of the gridlock national park experience. Do you think the national park experience is looking out the window of your car or bus? How about stopping at the most popular scenic spots that are located within a stones throwing distance from the parking lots? If you do, well, you likely have missed out on 95 percent of the park and a serine magical experience that only those willing to put on the hiking boots get to see. The system of roads in a National Park is designed to minimize the impact on the park. It is not designed to get you to the best places. If you do not get off your butt and hike a bit, you are not seeing the beauty of the park. Sure, you may have to deal with the cattle drive to reach your desired trailhead, but a leisurely stroll of about 1 mile leave the hordes of arm chair park goers long behind. You could be standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of people looking across Bear Lake at one moment, and in near solitude one hour later if you’re willing to exert just a bit more energy than the majority of the park visitors. Thanks goodness for the fast food armchair lifestyle!!!! Get on those boots and leave the crowds behind. It’s worth it.

Night vision devices the ultimate in backcountry toys

Many nights in the backcountry are far from dark. A bright moon and a sky full of stars can throw off enough light to allow for reading a book, but add cloud cover, mountains or trees and it gets dark awfully fast. When you need to see in the dark, you have two choices - you either turn on a light, or use one of the many available night vision devices (NVD). The NVD could be the ultimate backcountry toy. Like choosing many other types of technology, choosing the correct NVD is all about how you are going to use it. When most people think of night vision capabilities, they think about spy movies, the military or law enforcement - applications where it is vital for the good guys to see without being seen by the bad guys. A drop in pricing over the past few years has made a NVD affordable for campers, hunters, hikers and a wide variety of other outdoor enthusiasts. However, high-end devices used for specialized purposes remain quite expensive. There are two broad categories of NVD. Image Enhancement devices collect small amounts of light and amplify them to the point where the human eye can observe the object. Thermal Imaging devices capture the high end of the infrared light spectrum which is emitted as heat by objects. Image Enhancement devices will provide a much crisper image with detail while Thermal Imaging devices show regions of heat. Currently, five Generations of NVD exist. Generations 0 and 1 are less expensive and typically produce a poor image quality. Generations 2, 3 and 4 have increasingly better image quality and an equally increasing price to match. Applications for NVD are actually quite diverse. They include but are not limited to: military, law enforcement, hunting, wildlife observation, surveillance, security, navigation, hidden-object detection, spelunking and entertainment. NVD can be found on helicopters, rifles, camcorders, cameras, boats….just about anywhere. A new craze found at up-scale gatherings is called “A Dinner in the Dark Party” where guests wear an NVD throughout their dining experience. Many outdoor enthusiasts are beginning to discover the wonderful world that can be found after darkness falls in the backcountry. If you like to camp, hike or hunt, chances are good an NVD will be perfect for you. Use this information and you’ll Get It Right The First Time. Get Outdoors!

Northwest hiking equipment preparation for the oregon outdoors

: Hiking is one of Pacific Northwest outdoor enthusiast’s favorite activities. Oregon and SW Washington offer an incredible variety of forests, parks and national monuments ready for exploration and appreciation. Hikers should not be taken by surprise in this incredible area of the country however. Forest, coastal lands and cave hiking all present unique challenges to any hiker. The Pacific Northwest can prove to be dangerous if hikers are unprepared. Forest Trail Hiking The Northwest's forest trails are ideal hiking destinations because the scenery and beauty are unmatched by any other location. These trails wind through lush pine and fir tree wooded areas, tranquil open meadows, and creek and river crossed landscapes. The native wildlife - beavers, foxes, deer, elk, songbirds, squirrels – make it an ideal place for nature watchers. Oregon and Washington have very well maintained trailways and they take pride in their stewardship of the forests here. However, hikers should still be prepared for the unexpected in these areas. The most important item to pack on any hiking trip, especially in the summer months, is water. Food is a close second. Emergency lights and signals are also essential for any recreational hiker. Traditional roadside flares or signal lights are not an option in the Northwest wilderness as likelihood of starting an unintentional fire is very high. A LED emergency light is small, lightweight, affordable, and offers powerful, high-quality light that can be used as a distress signal as well as a flashlight. A multi-purpose pocket knife is also essential to safe hiking in the Northwest. These tools often include miniature scissors and pliers, tweezers and a compass which can all be useful to a hiker. The basic knife blade in these tools can be helpful to scratch trees and branches in order to mark an unfamiliar trail should you get lost. Consider packing mosquito repellent and sun block when hiking these forest trails as well. Coastal Hiking The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable and sometimes treacherous coastal weather. Hikers are advised to dress for the elements when hiking along coast range trails. A rain jacket and sturdy, waterproof boots are essential. The Oregon or SW Washington coast is are often overtaken by dense, heavy fog coverage. These fogs can come in without warning, stranding and disorientating hikers who are unprepared. It is important to bring a powerful LED flashlight or lantern when hiking this area to illuminate the trail or campsite as well as alert help should you need it. Cave Hiking Cave hiking is one of the more dangerous forms of recreational hiking. This activity requires specific safety equipment and long-term planning. Along with multiple light sources, appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water, one must also make sure to bring protective head gear, rope, and climbing gloves. Experts recommend headlamps when cave hiking to allow for hands-free hiking. If considering cave hiking in the Northwest, contact a professional in the area who can provide specific equipment needs and precautions. Hiking the Pacific Northwest trails is an incredible outdoor experience. A summer can be spent enjoying several trails, all with their own unique landscapes and beauties. Whether hiking through the Umpqua or Deschutes National Forests or exploring the Coast’s Oregon Sand Dunes, hikers will not be disappointed so long as they come prepared. ~Ben Anton, 2008

Pacific crest trail history and hiking it

The Pacific Crest Trail runs over the mountain ranges dividing the west coast and the rest of the nation. There is a lot of history tied to the trail and it offers great hiking. Pacific Crest Trail – History Running from the border with Mexico to the Canadian border, the Pacific Crest Trail was used by settlers in the 1800s looking for the good life in California, Oregon and Washington. This 2,500 mile trek offers a variety of environments including burning hot deserts and mountains peeks stacked up one after the other. Since most settlers came from the north, the trail area they encountered was definitely of the mountainous variety. While hikers of today will find it a beautiful and challenging trail, one can be sure many of the settlers had other opinions. Ironically, the Pacific Crest Trail is really a relatively modern name. Prior to 1993, it was known as a general collection of trails running the route with parts of such trails as the John Muir Trail included as sections. If you could travel back in time, a settler would be baffled if you started talking about the trail. Pacific Crest Trail – From Here to There Running from border to border, few hikers have every tried to hike the entire trail at one time since we often have to do this odd thing called “work.” Nonetheless, a trip from Mexico to Canada would take you along the following path. Having paid your bills a few months in advance, you would head to the U. S.-Mexico border just to the west of the town of Campo. There you will find five wood planks set up in an unremarkable patch of scruff indicating the beginning of the trail. Staring to the north and remembering those boots are meant for walking, you’re ready to go. Winding north, you’ll pass through the mountains over Palm Springs, stagger through the Mojave Desert, walk the peaks of Kings Canyon, brush up to the west side of Lake Tahoe and finally head into Oregon by walking along the I-5 freeway. Along the way, you’ll stroll by Mt. Whitney and through Yosemite National Park. Not bad, eh? Once in Oregon, you’ll cut to the east through Ashford and then head due north. Next up will be Crater Lake and the Three Sisters mountains followed by the old lava field area. You’ll leave Oregon by crossing the Hood River near White Salmon, Washington. Heading into the final stretch, you’ll shoot straight up through Washington to the east of Olympia and Seattle until you hit the Canadian border just below Manning Park. It is long, long trek and I’m tired of typing it much less walking. The beauty of the Pacific Crest Trail is you can spend weekends hiking small, scenic sections of it. In California, the trail sections through Kings Canyon are simply stunning and will leave you in awe of Mother Nature.

    Party tents

: Tents can play a big part in any event. Whether it is to keep the participants dry in the rain or provide cool shade in the sun. Party tents are extremely versatile shelters for outdoors and backyard events. Weather there is wedding, birthday party, celebration, block party, an outdoors wedding/reception or simply get-together picnic for that party tents are best. Tents shelter can enhance special events all over the world everything from backyard weddings to elaborate parties and corporate events. Party tents can be a great addition to your home and garden party for many reasons. Not only can they greatly enhance the appearance of your home or garden, they can also greatly increase the comfort of the party by sheltering you and your guests from the elements. Tents can be used as instant shops, craft tents, parties, and any festivities. These tents bring a festive look to your birthday or any other party. You can see tents in a variety of styles and colors with a full line of accessories. Aluminum and steel frame party tents are an ideal solution for covering your outdoor events or work area. These tents are totally portable but are easily set up to provide protection and security. Unlike comparable products, aluminum and steel frame party tents are truly affordable making them ideal for both home and commercial use. So, it's essential to have party tents set up for party, though for your guest’s comfort and to shield against the elements in case of inclement weather.

Picking the perfect national park for your vacation

There are so many decisions that go into choosing a vacation destination. When it involves more than just you and your friend or significant other, it seems to get even more complicated. Short and even family vacations should not drive you to drink or pulling all your hair out. These are just a few tips to help you make your choice a little less stressful. The first and easiest thing to ask yourself is what you and the people you will be going with like to do? Are you totally outdoor people, strictly indoor types, or a combination? Are all of you athletic or in good shape? Do you like hot weather, mild or cold seasons? Is sightseeing something you would like on your agenda or are you strictly an activity oriented type? Do you enjoy ruggedness or do you want more comfort? Do you like camping, fishing, backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, bird watching, wildlife viewing, history, learning how some of the unique formations in the parks came to be there, snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, sailing, boating, kayaking, whitewater rafting, photography, hunting, or just lazing around beautiful places? The next thing to consider is how much do you have to spend and how much time will you have. There are so many national parks and monuments that are relatively close to people that it is not expensive to get yourself there. Some of the exciting wilderness areas in Alaska can be expensive to get to, but if you have the money and enjoy the great outdoors, it is certainly worth going for an incredible experience you will not soon forget. That being said, it only remains to pick your destination. Bear in mind, that almost any area has inexpensive travel options and moves up from there to more expensive ones. Also, just because you’re going to a national park, does not mean you have to ‘rough it’. There are plenty of options for day hiking, climbing, fishing, water sports, etc. that do not involve sitting by a campfire enjoying the great outdoors if that is just not your style. Camping is generally believed to be the cheapest type of a vacation after you make the initial investment of camping supplies. This can be a tidy sum, but remember that the equipment usually lasts for quite a few years. It is generally true that camping fees at the parks are cheaper than an average hotel room. And if you own an RV, you can camp in true comfort. Most campgrounds are situated in gorgeous surroundings and allow you easy access to the park’s highlights. There are very few parks that don’t have some kind of campgrounds. Also, when you camp, you usually cook your own food which also saves you money. And no, you don’t have to eat hotdogs all week unless that is what you love! Now, if you live in the Midwest, there are plenty of park options within driving distances that take no more than twelve hours or less, depending where you live. Of course, you can always choose to fly anywhere, but some parks are a little distant from the nearest airport. Driving allows you the luxury of taking along everything you think you need for a comfortable stay. My favorite pick for the Midwest is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is hands down one of the best all-around parks for the family. It falls within the states of Tennessee and North Carolina. You can choose to rough it on the Appalachian Trail, camp out in a developed campground or wilderness, or stay in anywhere from luxurious suites to nice inexpensive hotels in nearby Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN. And, speaking of Pigeon Forge, you have Dollywood and all the innumerable attractions they offer in the area. On the North Carolina side you have more campgrounds, the city of Cherokee that has several Indian souvenirs and museums, whitewater rafting and fly fishing (the last two are actually offered in both states). The mountains are absolutely beautiful and make for great photo ops. Another great choice is Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and State Park. They also have camping and wildlife viewing, especially bird watching. A unique shoreline allows for walking on the beach or swimming in Lake Michigan. They even have areas for you to bring your own horses and go horseback riding. For those of you that enjoy sightseeing and history, you can see the five World’s Fair houses from 1933 or attend the Gathering At Calumic in early May, where Eastern Woodland Indians and Western Great Lakes fur traders and Voyageurs reenact what life was like along the Calumet River from 1730-1830. If you enjoy boating, there are several places in the Midwest, but the two northern ones are Voyageurs National Park and Isle Royale National Park. Voyageurs is in Minnesota and Isle Royale is off of the northern coast of Michigan in Lake Superior. Both offer great wilderness adventures as well as canoeing, kayaking, motor boating and fishing opportunities. Voyageurs is considered a water park meaning you have to take a boat over to the actual park, but it is a short journey. There are places to camp out or lodges to stay at that will help equip you, enabling you to boat around the waterways and find those great fishing spots or spy wildlife. Isle Royale is a long boat ride or a short “puddle jumper” flight. It has wilderness camping only, but also has a lodge for those who only enjoy day hiking and some comfort. There’s kayaking, fishing, backpacking, wildlife, with the longest running research program studying wolves and moose, scuba diving, and ship wrecks. It is truly a unique ecosystem to observe. The Western US has much more to offer in national parks. The most famous is Yellowstone where you will see Old Faithful and lots of other geothermal marvels and one of the few places in the lower 48 to observe grizzly bears up close. You’ll also see bison roaming very close by so be careful. It is located on the border of Wyoming and Montana. There are numerous ranches and lodges to stay at or you can camp out in the park. There is also great fly fishing, kayaking, climbing and backpacking. Another biggie is Grand Canyon National Park. This one is in Arizona, again on the border of Arizona and Nevada, but also close to the southern Utah border. It is part of the Grand Staircase, an immense sequence of sedimentary rock layers that runs south from Bryce Canyon National Park, through Zion National Park (both in Utah) and ends at the Grand Canyon. There is camping, backpacking, day hiking, whitewater rafting, and plenty of photography opportunities. Other great parks (although all of them are super places to visit) in the west, are Yosemite, Channel Islands, Redwood, Arches, Olympic, Grand Teton, Canyonlands, Rocky Mountain, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde, Crater Lake, Mt. Rainier, and Sequoia. All of these have great wide spread activities that will suit any vacationers’ needs and desires. Please check out our individual park pages for further information on each of these superb parks. The Eastern United States also offer splendid options for vacationing. Acadia National Park in Maine has unsurpassed northern oceanside views and cliff climbing that you won’t find in other parks. There’s also fishing, island exploring, hiking and beautiful gardens to gaze upon. Further down the eastern side is Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The Appalachian Trail runs through the park for 101 miles giving you plenty of hiking and backpacking options. There’s also camping, fishing, bird watching and horseback riding. In Florida, you will find three national parks and one preserve with the most famous being Everglades. Everglades is so much more then what you’ve seen on TV. The wildlife is phenomenal and makes it easy to get some great animal and bird shots. There’s also wilderness camping, (watch out for alligators!) canoeing, fishing, airboat rides, hiking, and rare as well as beautiful flora. Big Cypress National Preserve is right by Everglades and is very similar, but also offers cypress stands, mangrove forests, endangered species of wildlife like the peregrine falcon and the Florida panther. Activities include fishing, biking, canoeing, hiking, and hunting. Biscayne National Park is off of the eastern tip of southern Florida. As the world’s third-longest coral reef tract, there are snorkeling, scuba diving trips, sailing, swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking opportunities, making it a celebrated national park vacation for family vacations or outdoor adventure-seeking spring break crowds. Dry Tortugas National Park is a unique park preserving Fort Jefferson that was built during the Civil War but never finished, and the nesting places of terns and sea turtles. You will be able to enjoy Key West snorkeling, saltwater fishing, swimming, lighthouses, ship wreaks, hiking, beach camping, boating, scuba diving, bird watching, and underwater photography of some of the best coral reef and marine life areas down in Southern Florida. Again, I want to stress that this has been just an overview of some of the impressive parks to be seen in our national parks system. Picnic boxes a few good tips

There are few things in life that are nicer than going for a picnic. You take some food and drink and your friends or family somewhere nice, and then just relax: eat, drink and be merry. You can get the food and drink there any way you want – it’s perfectly possible to just take it in shopping bags, or a rucksack, or in any other kind of bag that you can throw in the boot of your car. After you’ve done this a few times, though, you might find that it starts to be a bit of a pain, especially if you’re taking real food instead of just a collection of snacks. What you need is a picnic box. Picnic boxes are special boxes designed to carry everything the picnicker could ever need. Many come with flasks for your drinks, and special plates and cutlery that is light to carry and can be strapped down in the bag. They generally have compartments and containers for each kind of food that you want to take, stopping it from getting damaged, crushed or going bad. It’s a simple matter of convenience: while you could experiment trying to find a good box and good containers, picnic boxes give you all that together as a set, and for not much more than you would pay for the parts individually. Not only are they often good value, but they look good too – a picnic box is, apart from anything else, a great centrepiece for your picnic layout. It makes it feel like a real picnic, not just something you’ve thrown together. When you choose a picnic box, however, there are some things you should bear in mind. The most common mistake people make is to choose a very large picnic box, thinking that bigger is better and it’ll be able to hold everything they want to put in it. When they actually come to fill it with stuff, they find that it’s really difficult to lift and awkward to carry. It’s better to get two small picnic boxes than one big one. Also, don’t buy the cheapest picnic box in the shop – if you choose well, the one you get might last you your whole life.

    Picnicking ideas

What better way to spend a hot summer day than to go picnicking in the park? There’s so much to enjoy; food, drinks, games, sports, activities, campfires and good company - just don’t forget the bug spray! If you’ve ever had a hard time deciding what to bring on a picnic, below are several lists that give ideas for what to pack on a picnic, no matter who you are going with. So grab your friends, family and loved ones and get going! With the kids: Kids love hotdogs and marshmallows. I don’t think I’ve ever met a kid who doesn’t enjoy roasting (and burning) these items over a camp fire. So if you are going on a picnic with kids bring hotdogs and marshmallows and you’re sure to please. Also bring pop and juice, chips, plastic cutlery and dishes. As for games, kids will like Frisbee, soccer, skipping rope, or really any game. Kids aren’t that hard to please, just as long as you have food, beverages, and several games you can keep them entertained for hours. Romantic: Picnicking with a partner can be very romantic if done right. Bring along a nice blanket to lay out on the grass, plastic wine glasses, and a nice plate you can both share. As for food, it is ideal to bring finger foods that you can feed to each other. Try crackers, cheese, olives, antipasto, cold cuts, and chocolate dipped strawberries for dessert. If you are a drinker it’s always nice to bring along a bottle of wine or champagne, but remember don’t drink too much unless you have a ride home! Friends: A lot of people enjoy going down to the park to hang out with friends (I know I do), because it can be a blast! And all you need is a group of friends, a case of beer, hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, pop, plastic cutlery and dishes and a football, frisbee or hackysac to play with. It’s also fun to bring along a boom box if anyone has one. Office: A lot of office parties involve going out for lunch, or ordering food in, but it’s a great idea to schedule these times for going on a picnic. You can ask every one to bring something and that way you won’t be spending too much money yourself. Things you can ask people to bring could include, hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, steaks, chips, pop, juice, potato salad, green salad, fruit, veggie sticks, nuts, and desserts. This can be a lot more fun than a regular office party too because people can play sports and do activities instead of just sitting around a table. So as you can see, planning a picnic is easy! You can be as creative as you want with what you bring, but the basics are often the best. So this summer, instead of wasting money at restaurants, gather up some friends and go build a fire!

Popup campers a cost effective camper for those fun outdoor adventures

Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. This experience can be enhanced by using a pop-up camper instead of tents. These campers can be rented for one-time trips, but can also be purchased relatively inexpensively. They are a fun way to travel and camp at your favorite outdoor area. Popup campers are fairly inexpensive. New trailers can be purchased from $5,000 to $10,000. If you camp often, this may be a great investment. Check the Internet for local dealers in your area and shop for the camper with the features you desire. Used campers are also available. Most dealers who carry new popup campers (also frequently called tent campers) will also have used models available. Check to be sure they are in good condition. This may be the perfect budget solution for regular camping enthusiasts. Rentals range from $300 to $500 for a week or $60 to $80 per day. Pop-up or tent campers are easily towed by many vehicles. Even smaller cars can handle towing a popup camper but be sure to check weight and hauling requirements before attempting it. You don’t want to wreck the transmission in your vehicle by trying to pull a camper that is too heavy for it. SUV’s and trucks are ideal for hauling a camper. All that is needed is a proper hitch to fit the type of camper and a hookup for the taillights on the camper. The dealer will be able to help determine the type of hitch needed. Another nice feature of a popup camper is that it has a low profile while being towed. This means it won’t obstruct your view while you are towing it. Popup campers provide comfortable accommodations that are much more secure then a tent. While tents provide minimal shelter, a camper has comfortable beds, protects you from the elements and provides warmth. Most models will unfold into two sleeping areas. This is ideal for families with children. The kids can sleep undisturbed in their area while mom and dad have some privacy. Smaller campers will have refrigeration units, storage areas, dining areas and cooking devices. This is perfect for more convenient cooking and dining. Some also have outdoor shower facilities and grills for barbecues. The larger, more expensive models may have indoor bath areas and more room, including living area space. These campers are comfortable and convenient. They also provide a much more secure area to stow gear and supplies while you are out exploring the area. Setting up a pop up camper isn’t hard. You will need to maneuver the camper into the site then unhitch it from your vehicle. Then, crank the camper up (some models have motorized cranks which saves a workout for your arms); pullout and secure the sleeping areas on either end; and pull out and secure the slide-out areas, if your popup camper is equipped with them. Make sure to crank down the stabilizers or your camper may tip on one end while someone is in it. I speak from experience on this topic. During a camping trip last year, I walked in our popup camper and over to one end to retrieve something from our storage area. Suddenly the camper tipped on its side. It was scary, but everything was okay. The extended bed on that end of the camper prevented the camper from tipping more than a few feet, but I now make it part of my job to make sure the stabilizers are cranked down during every camping trip we take! The entire process of setting up the camper, including setting up the inside and making the beds takes about 1 hour. Yes, it takes longer to set up than an RV, but a tent camper also costs significantly less. Whether you are a camping enthusiast or venturing out for the first time, using a pop-up camper is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. You can hike, canoe or go on nature walks and return to the comfort of your camper. Your gear will be safe and you will have a cozy place to eat and sleep without the hassle of building fires and setting up tents. This is an ideal way to enhance your camping experience.
