The number 911 has been in the news quite frequently in the last couple of years. 911 is the emergency number dialed by people when they need fire, police or ambulance assistance in a hurry. In the year 911 the Lower Seine area was ceded to the Norse invaders under Hrolf Ranger as the Duchy of Normandy (treaty of St Claire sur Epte). Anastasius III became Pope from 911-913. The Danes started the towv of Drogheda in Ireland. 9 11 also stands for the horrendous attack by terrorists on New York City and the Pentagon in which thousands of people were murdered. Here are some pertinent questions that to this day still have not been answered: Why did the FBI stop their investigation in Mid 1996 of two of Osama bin Laden's relatives in Washington and a Muslim organisation, the World Assembly of Muslim Youth? Was it because they had orders from higher up to stop any investigations related to the Bin Laden Family? Why did George W. Bush give the order to stop inquiries into the terrorist connections of the Bin Laden family based in the US and abroad in early 2001? Why did the US Government allow all the Bin Laden Family members to fly out of the US while all other air-Traffic was grounded? Was it because the Bin Laden family has been funding the Bush family politically for a long time? Why did none of the 19 hijackers appear on the passenger lists involved in the 4 hijjacked planes? Can you explain, why none of the indestructible Black Boxes have been found at any of the crash centers? When was the last time George H. W. Bush travelled to the Middle East on behalf of the privately owned Carlyle Group, one of the largest defense contractors in the U. S. and what was the purpose of that meeting? If we knew that there was a terrorist attack going on, which we did, and we suddenly have two trade towers in New York being obviously hit by terrorist activity, and we also knew of commercial airliners changing course from Boston to Los Angeles, then where was the response of the defense establishment once we saw the diversion of the aircraft headed west from Dulles turning around 180 degrees and, likewise, in the aircraft taking off from Newark and, in flight, turning 180 degrees? Answer: Commenting from CNN on the timeline, 9:03 is the correct time that the United Airlines flight crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center; 9:43 is the time that American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. And 10:10 a. m. is the time that United Airlines flight 93 crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Discrepancies between Joint Chiefs of Staff investigations and findings of the 9/11 commission: There was a highly classified United States Special Operations Command program under the command of the U. S. Special Operations Command. It was created as a result of a directive from the Joint Chiefs' of Staff in early October 1999 by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hugh Shelton, to develop an Information Operations Campaign Plan against transnational terrorism, "specifically al-Qaida." According to statements by Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer and confirmed by four others, Able Danger had identified the September 11, 2001 attack leader Mohamed Atta , and three of the 9/11 plot's 19 hijackers, as possible members of an al Qaeda cell linked to the '93 World Trade Center Attacks. The group used all information legally collected under the rule of law. Primarily consisting of classified information, all publicly obtained information was approved after a legal review of SOCOM lawyers. The early identification of the four hijackers by Able Danger appears to contradict the official conclusion of the 9/11 Commission, that American intelligence agencies had not identified Atta as a terrorist prior to the attack. This has resulted in a political controversy that has begun to damage the credibility of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.
At first glance it’s hard to imagine how the proliferation of human activity upon the environment has been a major factor in climate change given that climate change alone is nothing new. Over two million years the earth’s history has seen enormous changes. Indeed, in the last ten thousand years the warming and cooling of the earth has been on a larger scale that what we see today. The climate is however very changeable these days. Getting the politics right has been half the fight. Unfortunately, the right policy has been held at bay partially by having the right knowledge of what’s happening to the climate. The climate changes we see today are the result of only a century and a half of study, peanuts in comparison the huge shifts over the earths history. The recent UN Climate Change Conference sought to put in place a policy to take over the Kyoto protocol. At its core were some recently publicised results: 1. The warming trend on the earth’s surface has been taking place since the early part of the twentieth century. The last ten years have been the warmest of that millennium. 2. There have been rapid signs of melting the Arctic circle. The sea ice there has fallen by around eight percent over thirty years. 3. The old inconsistency in the data between the temperature rise in the atmosphere and on the planets surface seems to have levelled out. They appear to rise in parallel. 4. The Scripps Institute of Oceanography in California noted that the ocean has been warming at different depths for over 65 years. These results match the predictions that warming has been induced more by greenhouse gases that as a result of small changes in the suns heat output. 5. There has been an observed and recorded link between the sea surface temperature and the frequency and intensity of tropical storms, typhoons and hurricanes. 6. The existing computer models of the change in ocean currents, in particular in the North Atlantic, are correct. There are however still some unknowns. For example the solar hypothesis is now known to be a lesser contributor, the miniscule changes in the suns heat output over its eleven year sunspot cycle is adding to the mix. Also, the aerosol emissions from sulphurous fuel promote the formation of clouds, and as a consequence the sunlight reflected from the earths surface increases, effectively opposing the greenhouse gas effect. Some even argue for the benefits of global warming, which include for example the opening up of new shipping lanes in the artic as the ice recedes, new oil drilling opportunities and longer harvest periods in Canada and Russia. It seems climate change is inevitable and the small economic ideas such as banning coal subsidies bear little fruit as a means of curbing the problem. More than ever, political will must be demonstrated at first to show to industry and populations that it is even an issue. More importantly perhaps, the will of the politicians must be met with achievable methods from the technological and scientific community. Professor Socolow is leading the way with what he calls “stabilisation wedges”. On a graph of climate change, the space between the trend line and the stability line is known as the “stabilisation triangle’. By dividing these triangles into wedges and assigning realistic goals to each wedge the massive problem is given a usable and effective solution. The goals to assign to the wedges range from greater overall efficiencies, the decarbonisation of electricity, fuel displacement by low carbon electricity, methane management, and natural carbon sinks. By further subdividing each wedge into sub wedges, such as decarbonised electricity being subdivided into nuclear power, renewable energy, natural gas as an alternative to coal, and the storage of carbon dioxide – these problems are confounded into what everyone has been looking for. A short list of solutions that together will balance the problem. It seems the technology for all this exists. It is merely in need of refinement. For example the management of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels could be dealt with through further carbon sequestration. A couple of power plants already employ this particular technique to good effect. The carbon dioxide is extracted at the source and is injected into porous rocks deep underground to prevent it escaping into the atmosphere. Steam reformation is another technique. It is, in essence, a pre-emptive technique that reacts the fuel used with water to yield hydrogen. The hydrogen output is burnt to create electricity. Of all the possibilities of reworking and inventing technologies, perhaps the best idea is the oldest idea. Replanting programmes. The idea of photosynthesis to combine carbon dioxide with water and sunlight is a relatively cheap and exponential idea and would be hugely effective.
The ACLU has championed many causes since it was founded in 1920 by Mr. Roger Baldwin. Some of the most notable causes or rulings the ACLU supported have to do with abortion rights, homosexual and lesbian rights and removal of prayer from the public schools. Some of its most notable positions were of lesser significance but created much more press because they bordered on the frivolous and were more a nuisance than a legitimate cause. They adopted positions against bible studies and prayer groups in public schools and the removal of manger scenes in public during the Christmas season. Can’t you hear the voices of many grateful Americans in a resounding…gee thanks? Not to be mistaken for something that actually qualifies as the protection of our civil liberties is the new battlefield conjured up by the ACLU in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The three crosses adorning the city logo is a point of pride and history for the residents there but for the ACLU, they have given cause for it to rear its head and wield the battle axe. It has resulted in making “what ever happened to common sense” being the most oft used phrase in internet blogging history. But wait, it doesn’t stop there. The latest fit the ACLU has begun; concerns prayer offered by the U. S. military’s chaplains. In short the ACLU thinks it should be stopped. Whew! That’s good thinking. I don’t know about you but the last thing I would want to have happen to me just before I went to battle for my country is to have my country tell me I couldn’t go to God in prayer. In particular they are trying to stop chaplains from praying in the name of Jesus Christ. In a volunteer force made up of mostly Christian men and women isn’t that an infringement of their religious freedom? In fact it is more than that. The constitution says “Congress shall make no laws touching religion, or to infringe the rights of conscience.” What genius does it take to see that the ACLU is actually crying “unconstitutional” while they are proposing laws that are clearly unconstitutional? Don’t want to be crass but perhaps the ACLU lawyers and aides should all take a day off to watch Forrest Gump together. If I remember correctly the most often repeated line in that movie is, “stupid is, as stupid does” Diametrically opposite the ACLU is the newly formed but no less formidable, ACLJ. The American Center for Law and Justice founded in 1990 is headed by Jay Sekulow who is the ACLJ’s Chief Counsel. He is a well respected advocate for constitutional freedoms and has argued many cases before the U. S, Supreme Court. The Center for Law and Justice has successfully argued cases and supported positions in other cases which resulted in an impressive list of good common sense decisions and rulings. A short list of the accomplishments of the ACLJ is as follows. • A guarantee for minors who want to be involved in the political process by protecting their free speech rights in political affairs. • Rulings to protect the constitutional rights of religious groups to obtain equal access to public facilities. • Protection for the free speech rights of pro-life demonstrators • The right for public school students to form and participate in religious organizations such as Bible clubs. The ACLJ is currently on the radio waves daily soliciting signatures for a petition to stop the ban on prayer by the military chaplains. The response is said to be very powerful at the least. Upwards of ten thousand people a day are asking to have their names added to the petitions. It is shameful that Americans must pound away to ward off organizations like the ACLU whose agenda looks like it originated in la-la land. The constitution is under attack by those who feign that they are working to protect it. After all this is America and they have a constitutional right to mess with the constitution. Let’s not mess with their right to do that, but lets hope and pray (if they don’t stop us) that they don’t prevail. The Bible tells the believer to respect the rulings and laws provided by the secular rulers because the powers that be, are all ordained of God. Romans 13:1. Almost all bible believing Christians take this mandate seriously and endeavor to be law abiding citizens. You would think that this respect for secular law would hold things in balance between those who believe in the Bible and revere the constitution and groups like the ACLU, but it does not. The ACLU seems bent on removing all reference and allusion to God on any level. What would the result be if they were successful in this plight? I choose to let the Bible answer that question. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Romans 1:28
: If you are like me, you are living some distance from the devastation wrought by Katrina. If you are like me you not physically impacted and can watch the plight of others on television in the comfort of your home. And if you are like me, you are wondering what you can do. I believe the answer to that question is an important one. It can help define who you are and what you have and choose to give to the world. The list that follows is not meant to stimulate your thinking. It is meant to stimulate action. All of us can do all of these things. And in doing them we will not only be helping others, we will be helping ourselves deal with and grow from these events as well. Give Resources. You have heard it and will hear it often. The resources required by these events will be unprecedented. Open your wallet and give. It doesn’t matter which charity you choose, just give. Pick a number, then add to it. Do a search on Katrina relief to find places to contribute. You can give more than money though.
Perhaps you have other resources that you could offer. Spare blankets or other supplies will inevitably be leaving from your community in the coming days. Watch for these announcements and donate. If you know someone affected, or know someone who knows someone, perhaps you can provide a spare bedroom.
You can even support relief efforts each time you search the internet. Go to allgive to search and learn more. Give Yourself. If your situation allows, perhaps you feel drawn to go and help. If you are thinking about that and you can, go. Many of us won’t be able to go and lend a hand directly.
You can still give of time and talents locally and have a direct impact on efforts there. Organizations like The Salvation Army and The Red Cross will be spread thin for months. If you volunteer in your town, more physical resources can remain on the Gulf Coast longer. Encourage Others to Give. This is a way for you to give of your talents.
Use the leadership and influence skills that you have to encourage others to give. If you own a business, match employee contributions to relief efforts. If you are involved in any sort of organization, start a fund raising effort.
A colleague of mine sent an email saying he would match any gifts given by those on his list up to a total of $500. Every person could do this. Ask yourself who you could influence and how you could personally help increase giving. Get creative! And get started.
Say a Prayer. Regardless of your religious beliefs, or how you would state this, say a prayer. Say one for those who have lost family. For those who have lost their homes. For those who are sick or thirsty or hungry. And say a special prayer those involved in rescue and recovery efforts - those giving of themselves to make things better for others.
Keep Your Perspective. It is sometimes hard to keep a healthy perspective as you watch the events on television. It is easy to let the worry and concern become overwhelming. Do yourself a favor and don’t let these events overpower your life. Be grateful for your situation.
Rethink how upset or frustrated you become at little inconveniences or challenges, because these situations mean little in the bigger scheme of things, and the events of recent days should make this very clear to us. Conserve. Our country is going to be dealing with the aftermath of Katrina for a long time. There are other little things that we can do that will make a difference. Conserve fuel.
Carpool to workbine your errands, or just stay home. Turn off your air conditioning and turn off the lights. Fossil fuels will be in short supply and every little bit helps. Plus every dollar you don’t spend on fuel, is another dollar you could choose to donate to relief efforts. Give Again, Later. Many will give now, but agencies like The Red Cross will tell you that after the situation leaves most people’s conscious thoughts, the needs will still be great.
Make a commitment now to make another contribution later in the year. One way to do this is to reduce your holiday spending and earmarking the difference for Katrina relief. I’m sure there are many more things that you can do to help both yourself and others in the coming weeks. It matters less what you do than that you do something. That is my urging to you. You can make a difference, but only if you take action.
Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) has become a controversial issue when Republicans included the measure in a major defense bill. According to Democrats and moderate Republicans the piece of legislation was embedded in a major defense bill that couldn’t be turned down. The total bill passed 306 voting for it and 106 against (House Approves drilling, 2005). The new defense bill will hopefully reduce the federal deficit by 40 billion over the next 5 years (House Approves drilling, 2005). In addition to deficit reduction some of the money will go for military supplies, helping hurricane victims and subsidizing heat to those in poverty. Republicans feel that the measures are necessary if the White House fiscal obligations will again be on track. In 1987 a report directed to Congress indicated that there were 26 major oil fields in Alaska (Adams, 1995). These oil fields could potentially supply 10 billion barrels pumped at 365 million barrels a year (Cowen & Doggett, 2005). It would take over 27 years to remove all of the oil. Even though, without doubt, that the oil revenues would help the economy and the local Alaskan population, the necessity of protecting one of the U. S.’s largest natural reserves remains unresolved. Native peoples who are strapped for cash and rising oil prices which damper the nation’s economy are pitted against environmentalists who want to protect the multitudes of endangered species. Since humans love to consume and make little effort to conserve natural resources there must be a balance against damaging natural preserves further in an attempt to furnish people’s needs and protecting unspoiled land. By keeping the area relatively untouched businesses and governments will be forced to upgrade their fuel efficiency reducing the nation’s dependence on natural resources. By opening the ANWR to only a small amount of oil mining instead of the full array of oil companies proposed by the government we can help push the nation into a stronger economic future that is less dependent than competing nations. Incrementally, but noticeably, the United States is shedding its democracy. Hard-won civil liberties are willingly sacrificed for the sake of illusory added security. Institutions are stacked with political, partisan appointees who do their puppetmaster's bidding. Laws are openly broken and the Constitution flaunted with breathtaking callousness and an ease that would have been considered unthinkable on September 10, 2001. I wouldn't be surprised if the forthcoming presidential elections are suspended due to this perpetual "state of emergency". Largely ignorant of history and thus devoid of any meaningful or helpful perspective, people shrug off this doomsday scenario. They forget that Rome - a four hundred years old republic with venerable institutions like the Roman Senate - gave in to tyranny in the space of four years. The same goes for ancient Athens, the first truly participatory democracy on earth, transformed by wars into a hideous dictatorship. America's is a malignantly narcissistic culture. Its denizens believe counterfactually that it is the richest, most virtuous, freest, society on earth. Reasonably, they are convinced that everyone is destructively envious of them. This renders them paranoid and violent. An early and observant traveler, Alexis de Tocqueville, noted this siege mentality and warned that the United States is walking a thin line between freedom and authoritarianism. It is this ingrained belief that the world is hostile and harsh that will likely undo the American experiment. Psychology teaches us about projective identification - a defense mechanism that forces people around you to behave the way you are accustomed and expect them to. Treating everyone as a potential enemy usually turns them into ones.
Tired of paying too much in taxes while your government continues to waste your hard-earned money and not listen to what you want? Do something about it, says a provocative new website working to give the power back to the people. Voter powerusa says there are four simple things you can do to take back your government from corporate lobbyists, special interest groups and dishonest politicians. 1. Unite and vote. In a two - party system only one side can win, but no matter who wins, nothing changes. By voting together on major issues at voter powerusa, both parties can win no matter who's elected. You win by getting both candidates to commit to what you want. There are many issues to vote on. An affordable national health care and prescription drug plan that cuts costs for all Americans, illegal immigration, government waste, unfair taxes, identity theft and many others. 2. Spread the word. Forward the website to everyone you know and tell them to do the same. 3. Support voterpowerusa with a donation to keep you informed on what experts say about the issues, and help produce a TV show based on helping you get what you need. You can also purchase Get Out The Vote apparel, CDs, books, souvenirs and many other items. 4. Vote out politicians who vote against what you want. This sends a clear message that you will hold them accountable for their actions. Don't you think it's time?
: Definitive Best-Relationship-Advice on Barack Obama becoming U. S. President Today is Wednesday, February 6, 2008, the day after the Super Tuesday – the single biggest U. S. presidential primary day. Notwithstanding the fact that so far neither Senator Hillary Clinton nor Senator Barack Obama could proclaim the victory of the presidential primaries after the Super Tuesday, Best-Relationship-Advice is, however, prepared to make a bold and definitive advice that the now Senator Obama will become President-elect at the end of 2008. Barack Obama will not only prevail the presidential primaries of the U. S. Democratic Party but also advance to enthrone to the White House becoming the forty-fourth President of the United States. He is making history in the presidency of the United States of America – the first non-white ethnic President of the World’s Super Power. What "An American Dream!" It has to make clear that Relationship Adviser is not American. He is not a member of or an affiliate to any political party – he does not have a slightest interest in politics. He is not a psychic either. This piece of definitive advice is not fortune-telling based on horoscope or psychic power, as most fortune-telling always gives equivocal answers which are largely subject to interpretations after the event to its favor. The advice is like when a traveller books a plane flying from New York to Paris on a certain day with a certain flight time, he or she would be foretold the scheduled time of arrival in Paris on that particular day. When he or she actually takes the flight and onboard the plane, he or she would almost certain that the plane will get to Paris at about the ETA – estimated time of arrival – foretold by the Captain. At the end of the journey, the plane would actually get there at about that foretold ETA. This seems exceedingly natural nowadays but not before May 21, 1927 when The Spirit of St. Louis was flown by Charles Lindbergh which made the first non-stop solo transatlantic flight from New York to Paris. The above analogy is most apparent and easily undertood but not the advice on the outcome of a weighty presidential election campaign. Most people would certainly be extremely skeptical about the credibility of Best-Relationship-Advice, but time will soon prove the stunning accuracy of Best-Relationship-Advice which relies on meticulous calculation and not on guesswork. Afterall, extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Best-Relationship-Advice is intended for people who are very serious about making decisions of significant consequence, and today this piece of bold and definitive advice is monumental to demonstrate how credible it is. Best-Relationship-Advice is unprecedented, definitive and invaluable for those seeking for right directions in order to make right decisions, not only in love and marriage relationships.
Meet the Clintons alone in an ally on a dark night and it is believed the chance of you coming out without getting rapped by one and cut up by the other is not very good. It certainly would not attract Las Vegas style odds, and in 2008 they seem determined and poised to snatch defeat from the jaws of success for the democrats. There is a reason white men, married men, and men of a certain age prefer Obama three to one. All one has to do is take a look at Hillary. Like one alcoholic or addict knows another, one look at Hillary and, even if you knew nothing else about her, you get the picture - you know, and the smart run for the hills while some destructive types have to hang around for the party. If this is what you want...This is Not It The electorate like the online helpdesk team fell in love with Obama in part because of his positive message... because he was above everything the Clintons not only stood for but practiced over the years. We must ask ourselves who better reflects the politics, ethics, and work style of the 55th Speaker of The U. S. House of Representatives, Thomas (Tip) O'Neill? That person is our candidate! And, that candidate is not a good ole boy - or girl - from Arkansas or New York or Pennsylvania, or wherever they are from this week. Many Americans feel Hillary is a monster.
We know she and Bill don't play by the rules. Just consider their history as well as their current push regarding the changing of the rules for Michigan and Florida to favor them at all costs. It is all about Bill and Hill despite her claims that it is all about you... that her desire to be President is for you. They are willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus for personal benefit.Obama, in the Tennessee Mountain Man's opinion, should have stood his ground.
Don't throw anyone overboard to appease perjurers. We are in the corner with Harvard professor and former (unfortunately) Obama advisor Dr Samantha Power. Tell the Clintons to get over it and move on after all they see no issues with their surrogate referring to Obama as Ken Starr.Americans must decide whether they want a fresh new start in everything politics, and whether we want someone indebted to no one but the people for their coveted position. The only alternative is gutter politics as usual with professional politicians holding positions doled out by party bosses, paid for with dollars by high powered lobbyists, and bought with the blood of the people who keep going to prison around the Clintons while they skate.
Remote Helpdesk 1 believes there is a reason Hillary is so divisive. She was the "b" behind, protecting, and enabling Bill and she is the secretative "w" in her own political and public life willing to unleash her husband as well as her feminine charms as required to bully or seduce. How many more people shall be sacrificed to team Clinton before we make up our collective mind that we deserve better and that we can have better, and then have the intestinal fortitude to stand our ground.
The only way to rid ourselves of the scandals of the Clintons from the past and those sure to follow any success they have is to banish them to the trash heap from which they evolved as we did the Enron Team. And, the only way to do that is to get past the manipulation both Clintons employ against the American people. If This Is Whom You DesireThis Will Not Do We don't have to fear them says a web based helpdesk company... they are not virtual viruses. They are not to be pitied... they are not the victims of vast right wing conspiracies. We all know they are not to be trusted... they are closer to used car salesmen and their repo teams than anything. They are not Jack and Jackie and they are not the Beatles... they are not Sonny and Cher. They are not even Ike and Tina Turner (boy I hate using Tina's name in the same sentence as the Clintons). Why would any sane nation return to the White House one who was impeached the last time he held the office? Why return to the Presidency one who lost his license to practice law the last time he was in that position for lying to a federal body? oh. oh. oh. Make no mistake - Big Willy will run the show should the weeping offended feminine willow win.Although he tried to rehabilitate his image during the Bush years, we know what kind of man Bill is. If only Vince Foster were here to tell Hillary's story in his own words we might be able to determine what an evil person she really is. Do we really want these two at the helm of the most powerful nation on God's earth?
This has made Bhutan one of the highest per capita refugee generators in the world due to the implementation of the “Driglam Namzha” (Cultural Code of the Ruling Elite) with a "One Nation, One People" policy which imposed the language, dress code, and customs of the northern Bhutanese on the entire population. The crackdown on the southern Bhutanese continued as the government began closing schools and hospitals in an attempt to force out those of Nepali origin. Often the countries most overburdened with refugees are already among the poorest in the world. Nepal continues to be ranked as one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of human development yet hosts more than 100,000 Bhutanese and 20,000 Tibetan refugees. Nepals inadequate social and physical infrastructural services are overstrained by such an influx of refugees. There are seven camps with a population of 101,000 refugees, about half of whom are located in Beldangi camp. The camps are situated on the plains of east Nepal, spanning two districts (Jhapa and Morang) which are the most heavily populated in Nepal. To get to the refugee camps, one has to drive on winding dirt roads through fields or forested land for at least half an hour. The forest clears out all of sudden and distinct rows of huts appear in the clearing. It seems as if you have come upon a civilization long hidden from the rest of the world. In the seven camps there are 45 schools, 40,000 pupils and 956 teachers. The student/teacher ratio is an average 40:1 but in reality the classes are much bigger than this as the number of teachers includes headmasters and teacher trainers which are given very few periods, if any at all. A school environment provides more than just basic needs to read and write, but also provides an outlet for children to experience a sense of normality, safety and routine after many years upheaval. Most of the classrooms are temporary structures (often made of a mixture of brick, bamboo and grass) due to the limited life-span of the camps. Many of the lower classes do not have desks and the children are sitting on jute mats which have been manufactured in the camps during the income generating activities initiated by Oxfam. However, all classrooms are provided with a table and chair for the teacher. The blackboards are portable with an easel.
: There has been a lot of buzz about bird flu or the avian influenza and how it could become a global pandemic. What would a pandemic really mean? The federal government just launched a 7 billion dollar program to help the prevention and out break of a bird flu pandemic. There have only been 83 deaths from avian flu worldwide since 2003. Health experts have not yet seen evidence of human to human transmission. So what does it mean? And why is everyone so worried about a pandemic? This new strain of flu virus would be more resistant than other normal flu strains and if it turns into a form that passes easily from person to person, we would have little immunity to it. Millions could become ill and millions would die. Once it starts to spread it could move rapidly around the world infecting millions and affecting the lives of everyone. The World Bank, which has estimated that a bird flu pandemic lasting a year could, cost the global economy up to $800 billion. The economic toll on the world economy will be catastrophic. What is the worst-case scenario and how might it develop? Here is how a bird flu pandemic might unfold: Outbreaks of avian flu in birds continue in several additional countries outside of Southeast Asia including Russia, Africa and the Middle East Human cases of bird flu increase Health experts confirm first human-to-human transmissions Flu screening is stepped up at airports around the world for passengers coming from infected countries Health care workers show signs of increased exposure Air travel spreads virus to all corners of the globe within 3 months First confirmed human transmission cases appear in Europe Russia, and the United States Outbreaks continue, becoming more widespread reaching epidemic status Regional stockpiles of antivirals quickly dwindle, new high volume production and distribution is 6 months off International flights are reduced or eliminated to help contain spread of the flu Billions are lost on international commerce, affecting millions of jobs around the world US imports from Asian factories halted as Asian workers fall ill, US inventories drop International trade devastated US economy feels effects of loss of productivity due to millions of workers out sick Financial markets hit by panic selling, gold prices soar Run on banks as investors convert to cash Hospitals see surge in flu patients overwhelming staff and supplies, only those most likely to live given access to limited available ventilators Healthcare workers and first responders out sick or stay home to care for ill family members Public events are canceled and schools are closed Government offices closed, non essential services shut down Social services reduced or eliminated. An old friend of the Tennessee Mountain Man who is now deceased once said when asked about taking opposing positions in the same court (different cases similar facts) in less than a month, "we be whoes... we know we be whoes". Then there was the old joke where a rich old timer met a doll at the bar and asked her if she would spend the night with him for a million dollars. She smiled sweetly and answered yes. After a few minutes he asked if she would stay the night for a half million dollars. She sipped her drink and said maybe. A couple more drinks and he asked, "how about a $1,000.00"? Incensed she retorted, "what do you think I am, a whore?". To which he responded, "we have already answered that question. We are now negotiating the price." But, the political climate of the 2008 Presidential elections, take the cake! They remind me of an ex-wife (I'll let them ponder to which of the six I refer) and maybe Google. With the stock market on a wild swing from day to day and sometimes hour to hour, the price the jackasses and elephants are negotiating now is our children's and grandchildren's future. Rather than biting the bullet and letting the economy and the market shake out the chaff, both parties are busy bidding against each other in an effort to buy the presidency of the United States for the next four years. Remember this is not a shopping spree at Walmart. You can’t easily return an elected official for a refund. There is nothing to refund if you could. Unlike Walmart, the government has no money, it earns no money. When it purports to have money, it is my money... it is your money. When the government prints money it doesn't have, you and I and our children pick up the tab. I am quiet sure if I went out for a fancy Friday night without inviting you but had the bill sent to you, you would pop a cork. Yet we sit quietly while those who are supposed to be representing all of us - spend wildly on some of us and send the rest of us the bill. Currently the United States debt has exceeded a whopping nine (9) trillion dollars and it is growing at about ten percent (10 %) a year before the outrageous bidding of professional politicians. You may well pay eighteen percent (18 %) and more on your credit cards and your house payments may have double or even tripled, but when was the last time you received ten percent (10 %) on your savings account? The politicians want to give you and me up to eight hundred dollars ($800.00) per person and up to sixteen hundred dollars ($1,600.00) per couple. Where did they get that kind of money? Bill and Hillary were broke (in fact millions in debt) when they left the White House. George W. Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Ted Kennedy combined certainly don’t have that amount of money. Ah! But, our bankers the Chinese do. Borrowing one percent of America's GDP from China for a short term economic shot in the arm is simply not worth the cost. It is rather comparable to going to the doctor with a severe infectious STD and receiving a shot of antibiotics without a follow up protocol of say, a prescription for antibiotics to complete the treatment and give the recovery process a chance to succeed. While the Computer Man endorses no one for this single most important political position in the free world, it is worth noting that the non candidate, New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, has made the most sensible (not that politics can be sensible) suggestion so far. It may be somewhat reminiscent of the WPA of 1939, but instead of giving away money we don't have... if we have to borrow and spend, do something that really will help - maybe not today but over the long haul. One suggestion, if we are going back to our banker (China) use it to rebuild America's infrastructure. It is time for the democratic, republican, independent and all Americans regardless of political stripes to bite the bullet, stand up and say, stop it. Stop the madness! Shout it from the house tops. Stop!!! Get rid of the professional tax and spend Miesters. Draft Mr Smith and send him to Washington. After balancing his small business and family bank accounts against all odds and in the face of every road block the Congress could throw at him, he knows how to make and live within a budget. It must be done quickly to be successful. The power brokers in Washington have already decided the American people are only whores whose vote can be bought and sold and are now haggling over price and time. I suppose it is a better offer than when ward captains only passed out pints of moonshine. But, you still have a choice until closing time. How much are you willing to sell your soul for? What price will you put on your children for the use and pleasure of the establishment?
In the world today, we are constantly faced with new world events. We hear about how terrorist bombings are going on all over the world, about stocks going up and down, and about crime offenders being reprimanded. These kinds of issues are important to all of us…it affects our economy, our way of life, and mostly, our future. What goes on around us whether worldwide, nationally, or even just in our community, is the topic of many conversations. You can be in your elevator, at the office water cooler, or your maybe even in your grocery store line-up, people like to talk about who’s being voted for what, which football team to cheer on, and what the weather is going to be like on the weekend. Being informed on these topics makes us part of the community. How can we stay up-to-date? There is always the radio. There are several stations available on the radio that we can tune in to while commuting to work and running errands. Unfortunately, many of these radio programs do not give you a full coverage. You are probably not commuting long enough to listen to the whole program, and there are so many commercials! Then there’s your 6 o’clock news on the television. Let’s face it…we are busy people. The children have after-school activities, we have social events, the dogs need to be walked, gym, dinner needs to be made, then there’s that thing called work. We no longer have the evenings free to ourselves to sit on the couch and watch the news. Your best option? Definitely a newspaper. With the newspaper, you can choose what sections you want to read. You can skip the ads that do not interest you, and it is very portable! You can take it with you to read at your leisure. You even get comics and puzzles to do in most newspapers! Subscribing to a newspaper offers the most convenience. With a newspaper subscription, you can be assured that your newspaper arrives at your door and is ready to be read at YOUR liberty. You have the benefit of not having to tune in at any certain time, you can put it down when you want if you are interrupted, you can even cut sections out for memorabilia!
The United States constitution was designed to provide equal protection under the law. However, from some of the recent stories which have been publicized, it is apparent that the law lacks consistency. Consistency in the law would ultimately mean that for every particular crime of which one is convicted; they should receive the same punishment. Our society has witnessed this inconsistency with capital punishment. Questions arise as to why certain people receive the death penalty and others just walk away with life in prison. So why the discrepancy in this course of action; it is because before anyone is sent to death the governor of each respective state would have to sign that he agrees to have the death penalty carried on. It must not be surprising that some governors do not believe in this type of punishment, inmates will, however, end up sitting on death row till they die. This can be a very long and daunting experience for the inmates whose fate is rarely unknown. I challenge the Justice system by asking,” is this social justice under the law?” Does it mean that depending on where one commits a crime you get a better chance of not being sent to death? If so, will it elucidate why certain states have reported higher rates of crime? It is imperative for the courts to come to a consensus as to what will bring consistency within the judicial system. As the adage goes, what is good for the goose is good for the gander; therefore what a convicted felon gets in Texas for murder should be the same in New York. The sovereignty of state courts in declaring certain statutes unconstitutional has been a major factor why each state can not have similar laws. It may be time for the United States Supreme Court to take a firm stance as to whether the country should follow other industrial nations in abolishing the death penalty or not. Even though their action may not bring contentment to each citizen, it will give to the law what it is lacking; consistency. There are a million reasons advocates of the death penalty will argue as to why it should not be abolished and in countering there are an equal number of reasons why it should be abolished. This text, however, is not debating about the controversy surrounding capital punishment. The law was designed to provide equal protection; therefore that is what the judicial system should try to uphold.
If you are wondering why the United States can send troops around the world, but failed to respond to a domestic emergency in a timely manner, you are not alone. Expect the lack of planning for emergency relief, in the aftermath and devastation left behind by Hurricane Katrina, to be the subject of a federal investigation. The National Guard arrived in large numbers on Friday, September 2nd, but how is it possible that the poor people of New Orleans were left four days to fend for themselves? Doesn’t the United States have a rapid deployment force? Yes, we do, and many large military installations are within an hour of the Gulf Coast, when traveling by air. Many more military bases are within two hours of the devastation. On Sunday, August 28th - one day before Hurricane Katrina landed on the Gulf Coast it was labeled a category 5 hurricane. So, what was the emergency rescue plan? Was anybody planning any rescue efforts on Sunday night? As luck would have it, Katrina turned out to be a category 4 Hurricane. Can you imagine the devastation, if this storm had been worse? Some parts of New Orleans are 10 feet below sea level and a system of levees, normally, keeps the surrounding water out. Referring to the Federal response for relief help, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said, "They don't have a clue what's going on down here." Mayor Nagin’s remarks are an understatement. Logistically speaking, this is not as complicated as a relief effort to Somalia. President Bush said, "A lot of people are working hard to help those who've been affected. The results are not acceptable." He is not kidding; if we can airlift food and weapons to Afghanistan, why is delivery to the Gulf Coast and New Orleans a problem?
