Uk world news reviewed by the bitch a weekly column

Well darlings, Whoa up, now! This last week in politics has been better than watching one of those loveable old Laurel and Hardy films, hasn't it? That's another fine mess you've got us into, Tony! And another, and another... In education, after eight years and twelve White Papers that have had schools reeling from one disaster after another, it looks like we're going right back to where we started. I do hope everyone enjoyed that rather bumpy trip around the block. Fun, wasn't it? Education, education, education? It certainly has been! The ban on smoking rules has got everyone mystified. Neither those for or against a ban seem happy with the result, and nobody seems to be able to explain the rules clearly. Do the little bowls of heavily salted peanuts left nonchalantly on bars, the ones that are really there to entice you to have a free nibble to develop your thirst further, do they qualify as food? They are free to be taken and are not charged for or served, so how does the law stand on these? And how about the little packs of Cheddars, or even crisps, those that come sealed in airtight bags and so cannot be contaminated - are they food in the sense of the law? Do they make the ban compulsory if they are displayed, or nibbled? Will all licensed B & Bs have to stop serving breakfasts to remain within the law if they have a multi-purpose room and wish to permit smoking? Their licensing regulations are very similar to those of a pub landlord and their rights of refusal are exactly the same - so how do they stand? Ask any two politicians any of these questions and, if you should be lucky enough to get a straight answer, they'll probably give you two different interpretations of the same rule. In Ireland many landlords are finding ways around their total ban in a desperate attempt to save their businesses. The licensed premises, bars and restaurants, remain no smoking areas according to the letter of the law - but outside, in the gardens and in the car parks, various lean-tos, conservatories, garden shed type erections, and even a few old busses have now been left easily accessible for the smoker to use. They are not designated smoking areas, no-one is told or encouraged to use them, and the no smoking law is not being broken as they do not constitute a part of the licensed premises. It's all a nod and a wink job. The fact that alcoholic drinking is now taking place off of the licensed premises, and may be breaking another law, seems to be of little consequence - nobody appears to be bothered. Will such a "get out" be received here with equally blind and sympathetic eyes? Again, nobody seems to know. Such a hotch-potch was this law turning into that Tony Blair seemed to wash his hands of it entirely; content in leaving Jack Straw to try and sort it all out. Little wonder the result has been the last straw in absurdity! That is to say, it was the last straw in absurdity until once more our Tony started wagging his forefinger! Groan, and double-groan! Here we go again! Unlike Iraq, where Saddam Hussein was telling the truth and the investigators failed to find any evidence of weapons of mass destruction either before or after the war, Iran is openly going nuclear, and that coupled with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's outright declaration that Israel should be ”wiped off the map” has had many western politicians reeling and wondering what to do about it. It's becoming generally accepted that whatever the UN may say, and any sanctions that it may impose, will hardly do much to solve this fast escalating threat to world peace. I'm sure this time around we don't need intelligence reports (for what use they are!), or any dossiers - sexed up or not - to tell us what is going on here. Iran, with all that heat and sun in the summer, and sitting on all that oil for the winter and the dull periods, is one of the last places on earth where a nuclear power station would be genuinely needed. Like North Korea (another tinderbox), Iran has bided its time and waited until the West had played its hand. The war on Iraq has left us with a costly and a no-end-in-sight disaster - a weeping sore that will have us tied up there for years. Everyone with more than two brain cells trying to mate knows that there is no appetite left in either the UK or in America to become embroiled in yet another war. And with both Bush and Blair having lost favour and credibility over the Iraq fiasco, for them to be able to take their countries into battle on a new front is very much an improbability. So, with our hand played out like the greatest premature ejaculation the world has ever known - we can only wait, embarrassed, to see how the game will finally end. My money is on a surprise by Israel, should the Iranians progress too far with their plans - and that surprise might be another biggest thing the world has ever known! But then that's life isn't it? If you suffer from PE then it can't be that uncommon for someone else to do the banging, can it? Shock and Awe? More like fed-up and sore! Talking of banging: American research at Baltimore's John Hopkins University has found that Viagra is good for the heart and may prevent heart attacks by counteracting the effect of adrenaline, thereby putting "a brake" on the organ should it attempt to work too hard. It's also been suggested that: "We may not be too far away from taking Viagra one-a-day instead of aspirin." That'll certainly extend the stiff upper lip a bit over here, won't it? I find this beneficial revelation to be quite strange as it comes only days after other bodies have been calling for the government to force the manufacturers to add warnings to the labels of Viagra (and other impotence drugs) telling users that people have gone blind through using the drug. Do you think it might be some sort of a governmental wheeze to keep the people happy, but in the dark? Shock and Awe? Who said that? Who's there? Who is it? Put the ruddy light on - I've just fallen over a broom! At least, I think it was a broom... The facts I've found: Non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, a loss of vision that is frequently irreversible, is one of the most common causes of sudden blindness (especially in older people) with an estimated 1,000 to 6,000 cases a year occurring in America. (I can't find any UK figures for it.) People mostly at risk are those with diabetes and / or heart disease which, as they are also two of the leading causes of impotence, make it hard to prove that the tablets are actually to blame. And finally, I don't like what I'm seeing at the Beeb and I bet I'm not alone. Ten foreign language services, with the loss of more than 200 jobs, are to be axed from the BBC World Service in order to fund a new Ј19million Arabic TV channel that will be broadcast across the Middle East in competition with al-Jazeera. And in further cost-cutting, job losses are soon to be announced in the news gathering department. Whilst this new TV channel is obviously a good idea, it should not be at the expense of the other services. The broadcasts to be sacrificed are in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Kazakh, Polish, Slovak, Slovene and Thai because, we're told, "they have lost their relevance since the end of the Cold War." Really? Well, up until now we've all known that, far from its ideals of being free from both political and commercial influence and answerable only to its viewers and listeners, the World Service of the BBC was basically government propaganda led. However, nobody before now has ever had the balls to come out to say that quite so plainly! As this new TV channel, an obvious portal for propaganda, is likely to have been the idea of the government and not that of the cash-strapped Beeb, I feel that they should fully fund it as an "extra"; not as an "instead of". The facts I've found: The BBC motto is: Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation. But is that now only when it is paid to do so by the government? The BBC World Service HQ is located at Bush House, a central London building that is apparently not named after any American President. Are we absolutely sure of that? You might have imagined that a company that forced Top Cat to become Boss Cat to avoid confusion with a mere feline food product when it screened the cartoon moggie over here would have been sensitive enough to change the name of their Worldwide Services HQ building the day the first Bush popped up as a President, mightn't you? Above the main Aldwych entrance you can see two imposing figures which represent England and America and between them they hold the torch of human progress above which is the motto "To the friendship of English speaking peoples". A little inappropriate for the use of the building, isn't it? What about the friendship of non-English speaking peoples? Don't they matter? The BBC Worldwide Service is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the grant for 2005/6 is Ј239million. Now that's what I call impartiality! But I guess that if, as it appears to me lately, the BBC is to all effects exclusively to operate to the pleasure of Blair and Bush then it's only right that they should pay for their initials to be in the corporation's name! Folks, just keep your eyes on that BBC crest. The day that one of those eagles is moved above the lion, I'm emigrating! See you all next week... "The Bitch!" 29/10/05.

Us threatens china with massive tariffs

In a surprise move, Democrats and Republicans have written a bill threatening China with a heavy tariff increase on its exports to the United States unless Beijing ceases intentional manipulation of the yuan and agrees to strengthen the currency significantly against the dollar in the near future. Currently, three US Senators Charles Schumer of New York, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma are in China on a fact finding mission. Depending on what they uncover there, the three senators may put the tariffs to a vote by the congress by the end of the month. Why is the valuing of China’s currency so important to these senators and the US? The senators are arguing that China is manipulating and unfairly undervaluing its currency by 40%. The senators are also saying that this has led to a major loss of jobs within their states and a $202b trade deficit with China. The senators have made it clear that if China refuses to allow a significant revaluing of its currency then they will table the Schumer Graham China Free Trade bill that will levy a hefty 27.5% tariff across the board on all imports from China. The US Senators also boldly proclaimed that they have enough votes to get the bill passed quite easily and also to overturn a presidential veto. Senator Graham stated that he wanted to see China to adhere to global trade rules and emphasized his point by saying “The best way, I believe, to have stability to bring about real reform is to adopt rules where everyone will play the same.” He went on to say “If you want instability, have one group doing it this way; another group doing it that way. My goal is to sell the idea that stability is best achieved when all the countries play by the same rules.”’ The senators are putting up a strong and united front while in China, but meanwhile the Bush administration has made it clear that they oppose import tariffs. Specifically the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve have voiced opposition to these bills. Many economists in the US fear that if this bill is passed China could retaliate triggering a trade war that would send the US Dollar into a downward spiral. Others are concerned that China could also sell off its huge holding of US Treasury Bonds causing US interest rates to sky rocket. Many people in the US and international community are viewing this recent set of threats as political posturing to address an audience concerned about job losses in the United States. Many are of the opinion that this problem is not entirely China’s fault. The Chinese position opposes tariffs, but that they will allow flexibility for adjustment of their currency that would not include a mass revaluation move all at once. The Chinese have explained their position by citing the need for national banking and foreign exchange system reform to be able to cope with the risks and fluctuations entailed with revaluing their currency. The Chinese are resentful of the preaching of the US regarding this situation. The Chinese feel it is not their fault that the US cannot save and invest at a more robust pace. The Chinese have made it clear that they will move toward revaluing their currency at their own pace.

    Vojvodina the hungarian kosovo

In October 2005, Parliamentary Assembly of Europe members tabled a draft resolution castigating the human rights situation in the province of Vojvodina. As EU accession looms larger for Serbia and Montenegro, such resolutions are bound to proliferate. Vojvodina is widely regarded as a test case and the touchstone of Serbia's post-Milosevic reforms. Milosevic is still a hate figure in Vojvodina. Until he abolished it in 1989, the northern region, bordering on Hungary, enjoyed an autonomy granted by Tito's successive constitutions. Vojislav Kostunica, the current prime minister of erstwhile rump Yugoslavia and a one time winner of the first round of elections for the presidency of Serbia has replaced the deposed autocrat as chief villain. His opponent, the reform-minded Miroljub Labus, won convincingly only in Vojvodina and southwestern Serbia in the self-same elections. Exactly four years ago, the provincial assembly of Vojvodina sacked the region's deputy prime minister, a Kostunica crony, and upgraded the status of Novi Sad to "capital city". The assembly's speaker stormed into the building of Novi Sad's TV and radio to protest a Belgrade appointment. Serb radicals demanded full self-government, the large Hungarian minority - one eighth of Vojvodina's two million strong populace - petitioned for self-rule in locales with a Magyar majority, moderates urged Belgrade to start negotiating soon. Hungary, under the previous prime minister, Viktor Orban, agitated aggressively on behalf of its ethnic kin. It looked as though Vojvodina is about to join the ranks of independence-prone Kosovo and Montenegro. Many Vojvodina Serbs still regard it as central European, having been part of the Habsburg empire until 1918. Vojvodina's denizens - pro-Western, highly educated, intellectuals, members of the free professions, and globe-trotting businessmen - were horrified by the barbarity of Yugoslavia's tortured demise. They now act as the self-appointed conscience of Serbia and Montenegro. In June 2002, Nenad Canak, the head of the provincial parliament, demanded the prosecution of journalists who contributed to "warmongering" during Milosevic's reign. As reported by Radio B92, the organizers in Novi Sad in August 2002 of "Blood and Honey", an exhibition of photo-journalist's Ron Haviv's work in the Balkan in the 1990's, wrote in a letter addressed to Kostunica, among others: "Why do you keep silent regarding nationalistic and chauvinistic behavior? Why is this problem being ignored? This is obviously not an isolated incident, but an organized, planned and financed action. Does this mean that you are turning a blind eye to the truth? The [truth] is simple - wars happened and crimes were committed in them, crimes that we will have to face, sooner or later." Even their dismay at NATO's surgical demolition during the 1999 Kosovo campaign of their three economically-critical bridges over the Danube and their only oil refinery did not turn them into anti-Western xenophobes. Finally, in January-February 2001 and again in January-February 2002, the Serbian parliament restored some of the territory's previous powers and privileges - over its finances, agriculture, health care, justice, education, tourism, sports, the media, and social services. Mile Icakov, a triumphant parliamentarian, from the late Djindjic's DOS umbrella grouping of reformist parties, quoted by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, uttered this veiled admonition: "That's something we had and that's something that belonged to us and nobody has to grant it to us, but to return back what was taken away against the law and against the constitution... Everyone in Serbia has already agreed on the largest-possible autonomy for Kosovo. Nothing will change if they do the same for Vojvodina. It would be fair to give Vojvodina the [same rights]. It's not fair that the bad kid gets everything he asks for and the good kid gets nothing." Yet, the omission to tackle Vojvodina's grievances - or even to consult it - in the March 14, 2002 EU-sponsored Agreement on Restructuring Relations between Serbia and Montenegro irritated the disgruntled province. Vojvodina is not only Yugoslavia's bread basket, it also harbors its nascent oil industry, and many of its blue-chips. As a result, it is a net contributor to the federal budget and subsidizes the other parts of the rump Yugoslavia. It produces two firth of Serbia and Montenegro's dwindling GDP and attracts two thirds of its foreign direct investment - with only one fifth of its population. In January 2002, the French multinational Lafarge bought a majority stake in the Beocin cement factory near Novi Sad. It paid $51 million of which Vojvodina is likely to see very little. Five loss making sugar factories were next in line. Serbia's privatization minister pledged to plough back one quarter of all future privatization receipts into the local economy. Then Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Dragan Veselinov, offered to subsidize sugar beet, soybean, and sunflower crops and to buy 280,000 tons of wheat in 2003. But these belated pre-election bribes did not soothe jangled nerves. During the 1990's Vojvodina was reluctantly flooded with Serb refugees from Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo. The "invasion" altered its character. The erstwhile bastion of tolerant Austro-Hungarian culture has been Balkanized and rendered discernibly more nationalistic, corruption-ridden, and fractious. Neo-fascist, anti-Semitic, revisionist, racist, pro-Greater Serbia, and skinhead organizations proliferate. The two pillars of the movement for self-governance are, therefore, nostalgia and money. It is a belated reaction to the convulsive and blood-spattered disintegration of the federation. But it is also a rejection of Vojvodina's exploitation by the other provinces. Like Scotland and Flanders, northern Italy and Quebec, and the Shiite and Kurd regions of Iraq, Vojvodina would like to retain a larger share of its resources for local consumption and investment. In a "Europe of regions" and a world of disintegrating nation-states, this was to be expected. In August 2002, the Committee for International Cooperation and Relations with Euroregions of the Vojvodina parliament voted to join the Assembly of European Regions (AER). Vojvodina still faces the outcomes of a decade of Western economic sanctions and NATO military action. Sanctions-busting smuggling operations during Milosevic's rule criminalized some parts of the economy. Novi Sad's water, natural gas, the railway to Budapest, river cargo transport, and telecommunications infrastructure were rendered idle by the decimation of its bridges. The reconstruction of the first, largest bridge, "Sloboda" (or Liberty) was completed in 2004 and cost 34 million euro in EU funds, according to "Balkan Times". Two temporary crossovers cater to the needs of Novi Sad's population - but they are poor substitutes. Rail links to the rest of Europe, for instance, have yet to be restored. The expensive and intricate clearing of the Danube of unexploded ordnance has been completed only recently. Vojvodina strives to become a regional commercial hub. HINA, the Croat news agency, reports that the Serb province and the neighboring Vukovar-Srijem county in Croatia have agreed to rebuild bridges, in both the literal and the figurative senses. Vojvodina vowed to help Vukovar secure the return of art expropriated by the Serbs during the internecine war, demine its environs, and find the whereabouts of missing Croat soldiers and civilians. Vojvodina's parties are members of the ruling, Western-orientated, formerly Djindjic-led, coalition in Belgrade. The Vojvodina Reformists, who backed Kostunica in the recent bout of elections, once have teamed with a DOS breakaway faction to form a new, left of center, political force. Vojvodina plays a crucial role in Serb politics. Even the leader of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, Jozsef Kasza, admitted to the Yugoslav daily "Dnevnik", that the status of the Hungarian minority is improving "step by step", though "Hungarians are still not adequately represented in the judiciary, prosecutions, in leading positions in the economy." He elaborated: "During the Milosevic era they wouldn't let us have our schools, media, they banned the official use of the language. The situation has now improved, the Law on national communities has been passed which needs to continue its implementation more and more." In an inversion of the traditional roles, the Beta news agency reported that Vojvodina's then secretary for culture and education, Zoltan Bunjik, announced a series of assistance programs targeted at the Serb minority in Hungary, including a Serb history and culture curriculum.

Will germany declare war on iran

July 17th 2006 - For the first time since German reunification Germany is truly a world player again. With one of the largest militaries in Europe with about 76,200 air force personnel, 221,000 armed forces personnel, 230,600 army personnel, 26,700 navy personnel, 2,300 tanks, and some of the most advanced aircraft in the world in the modern German Luftwaffe Germany is truly "loaded for bear". Chancellor Angela Merkel likened hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Adolf Hitler in April of 2006, saying the world must act now to stop him before his country developed a nuclear bomb. "We want, we must prevent Iran from developing its nuclear program further," Merkel told top policymakers from around the world in a speech to the annual Munich security conference. Referring to the rise of Hitler in the 1930s, Merkel added: "Now we see that there were times when we could have acted differently. For that reason Germany is obliged ... to make clear (to Iran) what is permissible and what isn’t." "Iran has blatantly crossed the red line," Merkel said. "I say it as German chancellor. A president that questions Israel’s right to exist, a president that denies the Holocaust, cannot expect to receive any tolerance from Germany." In addition to the nuclear dilemma, Iran is considered to be one of the biggest state sponsors of terrorism. And now with the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, Iran along with Syria are being called "the puppet masters" pulling the strings of Hezbollah and is accused of supplying rockets and arms to the terrorist organization. Unfortunately, Germany seems to also realize that Iran's missile capability may also threaten the German homeland it's self in addition to Israel. It is accepted belief that Iran currently has the capability to not only reach Israel, but major sections of Europe including Germany. With rapid development of the Shahab-3 MRBM with a range of 1300 km it's almost a shoe in that Iran could indeed reach Germany soon if in fact they could not already. Even more disturbing is The Rumsfeld Commission further reported that Iran has the technical capability to test an ICBM-range missile capable of hitting the United States: “A 10,000 km-range Iranian missile could hold the U. S. at risk in an arc extending northeast of a line from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to St. Paul, Minnesota.” The United States, Britain, Germany and France have made it clear in June they want an answer from Iran by the July 15-17 summit of the Group of Eight (G8) nations in St. Petersburg, Russia. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran would give its answer by August 22, prompting President Bush to complain that Iran was dragging its feet. This makes me wonder what Iran has up it's sleeve, when you add 2 and 2 together it comes up to trouble. First Iran ramps up it's rhetoric, then Iran puts on a demonstration of military weapons, then Iran tries to stall the deadline on ceasing it's uranium enrichment program until August, and now during the G8 summit which was stated as the deadline Hezbollah starts a war with Israel. In a speech carried on state television July 16th, supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei branded "Zionists" as "an evil and cancerous being and an infected tumor". "The Zionists wanted Lebanon to be the meat between their teeth. The powerful limbs of Hezbollah have prevented the Zionists' dream of trouble from being realized," Khamenei said. His comments, on the fifth day of an Israeli onslaught against its northern neighbor following Hezbollah's capture of two soldiers, prompted chants of "Hezbollah will win, Israel will be destroyed". Khamenei replied: "Yes, that is what we say". With rhetoric like that how can you not consider Iran as a key planner in the conflict? Obviously the Iranian president and the Ayatollah's that pull his strings are being taken as madmen, and I'm sure that this is the case, however I don't believe that they are stupid. They must know that sooner or later someone is going to take action, be it Israel, the United States, or Germany, so what are the Iranians planning? Now take into account the recent missile tests in North Korea as a thumb in the eye to the western world and Japan, and the widely held belief that Sadam Husein's weapons of mass destruction were funneled into Syria before the Iraq war and I think we have a recipe for disaster. German chancellor stated during a joint press conference with United States President Bush in Stralsund, Germany on July 13th that the responsibility for dealing with such countries as Iran “ought to be shouldered by more and more countries -- that goes for Russia, that goes for China.” So what if Russia and China do nothing, or even worse and block efforts to sanction or hold Iran accountable? Do we then look at yet another "unilateral" military action with only a handful of countries such as Germany, the United States, Brittain, and Israel? And what if Iran, North Korea, and Syria plan on creating another world war as a new "Axis" power? This is why I believe that Germany will not allow this to go that far, I would not be surprised if we saw German "Tornado" fighter bombers flying sorties over Iran in the next few weeks. Hitler and Nazi Germany is still very much a raw nerve in Germany today and I would not only be surprised, but disappointed if Germany did not take the lead in neutralizing the Iranian threat soon. Not only should Germany take the lead in removing the current Iranian regime, it must. Iran is a huge country with waves of fanatical Basij fighters that are basically units of human wave suicide bombers. During the Iran-Iraq war Iran created and mobilized the Basij units against the Iraqi lines which basically amounted to human waves of lightly armed (if armed at all) fanatics to rush the Iraqis until they ran out of munitions. This is the very tactic that kept Iraq from winning the war. With the United States bogged down in Iraq and the necessity to keep troops deployed in South Korea the Germans will almost certainly need to take a pivotal lead role in any action against Iran. How about this for irony; Germany and Israel leading a war against a fascist regime that wants to exterminate the Jews?
