The american english accent the voiced and unvoiced

The voiced and unvoiced consonants In this section we will try to clarify the difference between the voiced consonants and the unvoiced consonants. If you want to master English pronunciation you have to able to distinguish between these two types of consonants. This is necessary for you to learn the proper pronunciation when you learn new vocabulary. And more importantly you need to know the difference between voiced and unvoiced consonants to be able to pronounce the words of English correctly. What makes one consonant be voiced and another not? A consonant is voiced when it makes the vocal cords vibrate. It is voiceless when it is pronounced without vibrating the vocal cords. The sound of the letters "p" and "b" For example, the sounds indicated by the letters "b" and "p" differ only in their vocalization (voicing). The are both "bilabials", that is, they are produced by closing both lips. But the "b" is voiced and the "p" is unvoiced. In this article, we will follow common practice and indicate the letters of the alphabet with quotes (“b” and “p”) and the sounds with slashes (/b/ and /p/) You can appreciate the difference by lightly touching with the tips of your fingers your "Adam's Apple" (the voice box that you can see in the front of your throat) as you pronounce the word bowl . You can feel the vibration with the tips of our fingers. Concentrate on the first sound, the consonant /b/ before passing to the vowel represented by the "o". Notice that you can lengthen the sound (something is heard!) without the "o". This is because /b/ is a voiced consonant. Now pronounce the word pole. Do you feel the vibration in the vocal cords? No. The reason is that /p/ is an unvoiced consonant. Notice that you you can't lengthen the sound or hear anything. When you pronounce these sounds, don't forget the advice we already gave you in other articles: exaggerate the value of the vowel "o" with a strong English accent! Listen to the following exercise until you can distinguish betwen the two sounds and produce them yourself. You should be able to telll the difference between the /p/ and the /b/ in the sentence The doctor said: "Bill, take your pill! Try it now! The sounds of the English letters /k/ (sometimes "c") and /g/ It is not only the sounds /p/ and /b/ that are voiced or unvoiced. The same distinction holds for the sounds represented by the letters "k" y "g" in the International Phonetic Alphabet. By the way, do you see that it will not be hard for you to learn the symbols of the IPA? Many of the symbols, like the k and the g are already familiar to you. They are the normal letters of the alphabet. The IPA symbol k interests us now. It is the "hard" sound of the letter "c", the sound that the letter "c" usually takes before the letters "a", "o", and "u", for example in the words car, coat, cube. Now can you see how the IPA system makes it easy for you to learn the pronunciation of new words? Now, we don't have to worry that sometimes the letter "c" has the sound of the IPA symbol k (as in the word cold) or that sometimes the same letter "c" of the English alphabet is pronounced as the IPA s (as in the words cell ). ! Now try to feel in your voice box the vibration in the word coal! You can't because it is the unvoiced partner in the pair. If you touch your voice box while you pronounce the word goal, you do feel the vibration because the sound g is voiced. Practice the two words coal and goal. But keep on pronouncing the the English vowel with its lengthening. Exaggerate the English language character of the vowel. Don't pronounce it as if it were col or gol in your language. And also remember the explosive nature of the consonant represented by the "c" in English when it is pronounced as the IPA k. Blow out the candle when you say coal. Pero… ЎQuй no suene como si hablaras de repollo (la col en el Perъ) o del fъtbol (el gol)! ЎCuidado con tu acento hispano! Did you notice that we review various important things about the English sounds as we move along in this book. From now on, in your listening and in your practice, you must remember the explosive consonants, the special English vowels, and the voiced or unvoiced consonants. Listen and practice all these essential elements of English pronunciation. The sound of the letters "t" and "d" Consider the pair of words tear and dear. Do the same with these words as you did above with the pairs of words coal and goal, and pole and bowl. Can you distinguish which of the initial sounds is voiced and which is unvoiced? Both are pronounced in almost the same place in the mouth but the initial sound of these two words is different in that the letter "t" is usually voiceless and the "d" is usually voiced. However, do NOT think that the letter "d" in English is always voiced. You will see that sometimes this letter "d" represents a voiceless sound. This is a VERY important lesson in the pronunciation of English and when you learn how and when the "d" is unvoiced it will be a valuable tool for you in your mastery of English. This difference between the letters "d" and "t" in English is very important in the matter of the past tense of verbs. We will treat this elsewhere. Also there is another pair of voiced and unvoiced consonants, the sounds represented in English by the letters "s" and "z". We will study them in their most important contexts, that of the third person singular of the present of verbs, and that of the plural of nouns. But for now, concentrate on the consonants we just looked at. Now listen and practice! Listen wherever you can (or listen in our book) to the different pairs of voiced and unvoiced consonants. Then make them yourself. P and B K and G T and D This lesson is taken from the book, “Word Power” which contains sound files that let you hear the vowels and consonants and practice their pronunciation.

    The automatic champion

“Babe” Didrickson Zaharias was a phenomenal athlete. This Texan ran, jumped, rode horses, and played basketball and baseball—with tremendous flair. In the Olympic tryouts in 1932, she won five first places in track and field events. In the games of that year in Los Angeles, she won a gold medal in the women’s 80 meter hurdles, a gold medal in the javelin throw, and a silver medal in the high jump. After the Olympics, Zaharias turned to golf. Although she started from scratch, she won the National Women’s Amateur and the British Women’s Amateur. The press hailed her as a “natural athlete.” They often referred to as an “automatic champion.” But the real story behind Zaharias fairy-tale success was her painstaking diligence. Her success came from studied repetition. In every sport she undertook, she was methodical, deliberate, and persistent. She was neither “natural” nor “automatic.” When, for example, she played golf for the first time, she did not automatically master the game. Instead she studied the game carefully, covering all its complex skill sets, under the tutelage of the finest golf teacher she could find. She looked at all the elements of the golf swing, broke it down into parts, then put it all together in a fluid movement. Besides using an analytical approach to understand the game, Zaharias also locked the information into her motor nervous system through exhaustive practice. She would spend as many as 12 hours a day on the golf course, hitting as many as a thousand balls. Her hands would often becomes so sore that she could hardly grip her club. She stopped only long enough to tape up her hands before picking up the club again. Zaharias learned to play golf the right way. She started out by hiring an exceptional teacher. She analyzed each part of the golf swing then put them all together in a fluid motion. She practiced for about 12 hours a day. She exercised self-discipline and self-sacrifice. And she didn’t doubt herself. Her previous successes had created an enduring self-confidence. She believed that if she applied herself she would be a golf champion. She proved this belief true. Zaharias took a risk. She risked her reputation as an athlete by trying something new. She also risked the time and money it cost her to perfect her new sport. Above all, she was methodical in the way she went about inventing herself as a champion golfer. She chose a gifted teacher, studied all aspects of the game, and put her new knowledge into practice, converting theory into motor learning, coordination, and stamina.

The availability of higher education online

The traditional method of attending an institution of higher learning was to go to a school and attend classes inside a building, sitting at a desk, and listening to an instructor face-to-face. Today, because of the benefits of technology and the Internet, it is possible to attain a higher education online. Not only can a student receive a bachelor’s degree online, but it is also possible to earn a master’s degree, and even a PhD via the Internet. Traditional colleges and universities are taking part in an educational and technological revolution in joining with online-only institutions to offer bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and PhD degrees to students from every corner of the planet. The degree programs offered are quite varied, and continue to increase as the technology of online education grows. There is no shortage of reasons to consider pursuing a higher education online. Proximity is a major reason to consider it. A student can literally be anywhere in the world and still attend class, as long as he or she has access to an Internet connection. Attending classes and submitting assignments online eliminates the requirement for commuting or relocating. This has the potential for significant cost savings. Another advantage to attending college online is the factor of time management. An institution has the ability to offer more sections of courses in the online format, allowing a student to have more option as to when to attend class. This allows the student to have more flexibility, and is an ideal situation for those who work full time and/or care for a family. Yet another reason to consider online education is comfort. Not only can a student access courses from the comforts of home, but this is also an ideal alternative for those who wish to return to college after many years. The stress of feeling the need to fit in with younger classmates is virtually eliminated, and returning to college via the Internet is a great way to ease back into the routine of school and assignments. When thinking about receiving a higher education online, the prospective student has a few things to consider. There are several online-only colleges and universities that offer all degree types in varying fields that are fully accredited. These universities often allow a student to earn a degree at his or her own pace, which is a big advantage to those with full-time careers and families. Traditional colleges and universities that offer online degree programs in addition to their traditional face-to-face programs might not be so liberal in the length of time it takes to earn a degree as a full-time student, but most certainly will allow a student to enroll part time. However, being a part-time student might have an effect on financial aid eligibility. Specific requirements would need to be verified depending on the institution in which the prospective student is interested. The fields available to study at online institutes of higher education are seemingly limitless. Students may study any number of disciplines including business, social sciences, humanities, math, human resources, English, art, and healthcare programs. Each school has different requirements for admission into individual programs (such as entrance exams scores and prior degrees earned), so it is important to take those into consideration when applying. The requirements will be the same for online and local students, and the spaces for programs will still be limited. The misconception of earning a higher education online is that the experience is not as enriching as attending face-to-face classes at a tradition college or university. While it is true that being an online student requires a certain amount of self-discipline and self-motivation, most programs offered online present the same opportunities for group work, independent study, and communication with classmates and instructors as do the traditional method of earning a degree. And because attending an institution of higher education online requires such drive, it helps to facilitate the independent learning process, while at the same time helping to develop time management skills. With the popularity of the Internet and technologies such as teleconferencing in education today, it is possible to come away with not only a degree, but also being more in tune with technology, which carries significant potential in broadening career opportunities. Seeking a higher education online is a reasonable, convenient, and flexible way for a person to advance both a person’s education and career potential.

The benefits of earning a high school diploma online

Whether you’re a current high school student looking for alternatives to traditional classroom learning, or an adult seeking to earn your diploma to improve your career prospects, online learning is an option you might want to consider. Working on your high school diploma through the Internet, for many people, is far more beneficial than attending conventional on-site classes. It’s more convenient, and with so many opportunities becoming available every day, it is definitely possible to find a program that is flexible enough to fit into the busiest of schedules. So what are the benefits of online learning, for the high school student in particular? The most obvious benefit is the opportunity to earn a diploma from the comfort of home, no matter where your teacher and virtual classroom are located, as long as you have consistent access to a computer and Internet connection. Secondly, you are not limited to the usual course selection offered by traditional high schools. Instead, course lists online tend to offer more selection – and if you don’t like what one school has available, you can search around for a diploma program that offers the specific courses you require. Courses can range from advanced math to guitar lessons, so you’ll never be left without a choice. And you can’t find a more comfortable classroom setting than your own home. If you’re someone who works well in a home environment, online learning is the best way to approach material at your own pace and learn without the pressure sometimes present in a normal classroom setting. Perhaps your learning style is different? If this is part of what keeps you away from the classroom, online learning can make it easier to achieve your academic goals. Choose a program that works well with your personal learning style and you will do well. And of course, earning a diploma online is convenient. Online learning appeals to all walks of life because, no matter how unique your situation, the Internet makes it possible to learn without the usual restrictions of attending classes in person. For students with full-time jobs, or families to care for, it truly is the only way to realistically fit high school into your daily schedule. Students who normally would be left behind now have the opportunity to finish high school without worrying about sacrificing other aspects of their life. Especially for the adult student who needs to keep working, online learning provides the utmost in flexibility. You can study whenever and wherever you want, to make your dreams come true. Finally, for the timid student, online learning allows you to learn without hindrance. You are given the freedom to ask a teacher or tutor questions through online chat or other electronic means, rather than having to face him/her in real life. For young students who have fallen victim to bullying, online high school provides an excellent opportunity to complete high school and interact with other students without worrying about safety issues. Ultimately, the decision to take high school courses online is up to you – but if you see it as an opportunity to achieve your goals, and work hard, an online diploma program can take you far.

The best position for speed reading

Speed reading is an acquired skill. It’s not something that can be done by just anyone and it’s also not something that can be done anywhere. You won’t often see a person holding a book in their hand and speed reading as they are sitting on a park bench or riding on a bus. It requires not only a place of concentration but also a manner of positioning yourself and the book for the best possible results. In order for the eye to successfully scan the page at the rate that is required for speed reading, the reading material needs to be a certain distance from the eye and it also needs to be placed in a specific position. Ideally the book will be about fifteen inches from your face and it should be placed at a slight slant. The reason for this is that it’s easier for the eyes to read material when it’s not placed completely flat on a desk. Therefore you can either place another book behind it or purchase a device that is designed to hold the book for you. Either way, you’ll then have the book sitting the way you need it to be for optimum reading. Your body should also be in a specific position. Often we lay in bed as we read, and although this bodes well in the area of rest, it’s not productive to speed reading. The best position for your body during speed reading is to be sitting upright. Many people find it best to sit at a desk while they are speed reading. Their back is straight and the book is placed in the right position. Having a dim lamp nearby is also ideal. It goes without saying that the room you are in should be quiet. A lot of noise, such as other people talking, a television or a radio can interfere with your concentration. Your mind needs to be centered and focused on the material that you are reading and being in a room free of distraction works towards that goal. One of the best places to develop your speed reading skills is the library. The reasons are many and obvious. The library has many books to choose from. The library affords a very quiet environment. Your concentration would be at a peak there without the outside influence of noise that can occur in a home or office. Another perk associated with the library is that they generally are furnished with reading cubicles or booths. Many of these offer desks that are designed to hold books. They are crafted with a slight slant which is perfect for the speed reader. By taking a trip to the library once a day or even several times a week, it will give you the chance to work on your reading skills in an environment specifically designed for the comfort of the reader. As you improve your reading skills, you’ll be surrounded by literary choices which will guarantee that you’ll never get bored of the material.

The biggest advantage and major pitfall of online university degree programs

Today, life is very busy and competitive. If you are working and have no time to attend university or college to get an additional degree but are yearning for it then this article might be of some help to you. This article will outline the basics of online diplomas and online degrees; we'll use the two interchangeably if you don't mind. Than we'll share the one big advantage and disadvantage to watch out for. Exactly what are online university degree programs? Well, basically some colleges and universities have created a new era of online education for today's busy people and for people residing in small towns and locations too far away from the campus. It's called distance education and allows a person to receive their high school diploma at home or get a college diploma online from world-class colleges or universities without sitting in a classroom for eight long hours a day. With an online university degree you can enroll for a bachelor's degree, master's degree, diploma or doctoral degrees. Online degrees and diplomas are great for furthering your current career or launching into a new one. Did you drop out of high school? No problem as you can even get an online high school diploma. There are many universities and colleges in the US and all around the world, which are now offering their diploma and degree programs online. If you are interested in a distance education diploma or degree course, you can find many prestigious and well-established colleges and universities with needed information online. Available courses will permit you to obtain your degree in your own specified time and at your own pace. Your degree or diploma is just a click away. To get success in any profession, you'll need the right qualifications and with a diploma or a degree you'll be two steps ahead to fetching a good salary from your professional life. Report and studies have shown that studying at home and in your own time is more productive for many people. This leads us into the big advantage and disadvantage. What is the big advantage to online university degree programs? With most online colleges and universities you can enroll at any time of the year, this is the biggest advantage to joining any online degree or diploma course. All courses are structured in manageable, small units so that you can find studying enjoyable and easy to work into your current lifestyle. This of course leads us also into the major pitfall and some things you'll need to consider before dedicating your valuable time for however long your course will be. The major pitfall with online university degree programs. Too many people the idea of studying in your spare time and holding that piece of paper in your hand after a certain amount studying from home or online somewhere makes for a great fantasy. The reality however may not be so dreamy. There are some major reality points to consider here. How much alone time will you have each day? Studying takes time and if you’re a single mom or a person with commitments to allot of other things already let's just begin to be honest here, finding the time may be difficult. It can be done of course and if you’re determined you will do it for sure but just know that you'll have to sacrifice many things in life that you might currently be enjoying. The list of sacrifices is too long to list but you'll know what I mean. So the major pitfall of studying at home is finding the time out of your current busy life (if it is busy) and finding a way to not be distracted by all the little things that can crop up from being at home. Many people know this is not possible for them and this is one reason you'll often find a mature crowd going through nearly every course imaginable at your local college or university. Well anyway, no matter what you decide to do the most import aspect to think about for distance education is whether the university selected by you is accredited by other institutions or not. First of all collect all information about the courses and the universities you’re interested in. The challenges of teaching math today

During my years of teaching I’ve been wondering what to do to improve math education. My own teaching philosophy is simple, but throughout the years it has proven to be effective. While the groups I have taught have been diverse, there are certain consistencies in their responses, particularly, students appreciate a clear and sound explanation of a difficult concept, and experience the greatest growth when they have the chance to express themselves by asking any questions they might have and feel comfortable in class. My first objective in any class is to create a safe atmosphere for learning. That involves encouraging students to express themselves freely, but respectfully. It is always extremely important to set the tone during the first classes, telling the students what is expected from them, and what can they expect from me as a teacher. Learning the students' names is a very good start to creating a personalized experience. Some students feel very intimidated by being in a math class, and treating them individually helps to bring them into the group, as well as to convey a sense that they are not just bystanders, that I care about their individual progress and am there to help them with their specific needs. Secondly, there is no substitute for good teaching. The key to success is to teach well. It’s very rewarding to receive positive feedback from students about the quality of your teaching. I think it’s very important to find a way of seeing math concepts that appeals to students. Being able to translate difficult concepts into something that they can digest is a must. Still, every class is a new challenge, and some old tricks of the trade might not work all the time. We as teachers have to be prepared to adapt to each class and use our creativity and intuition to help the students learn. Third, I think it is fundamental to be dynamic and entertaining. Math can be dense sometimes, but that doesn't mean it has to be boring or tedious. Being dynamic means to be proactive and receptive. We need to be proactive by taking the initiative to show the students new perspectives they didn't imagine before, and we need to be receptive in order to adjust our techniques to make them the most suitable for the specific needs of a group of students. It is a fact that every group of students is different, and each group needs different approaches. Flexibility is the key. Fourth, I like to challenge students, with achievable tasks that can build their confidence as they stretch beyond their comfort level. I like to encourage them to do things they didn't think they could do. I have noticed that the students find tremendous satisfaction when they achieve something that they didn't think they could achieve. To see that is really rewarding. That's one of the biggest payoffs of a teaching career, to see the students find unexpected talents in themselves. Teaching mathematics requires great sensitivity and perceptiveness. There are people taking math classes who have no interest in the field at all, and take the class only because it is a requirement for their major. It's also common to find people who are very frightened of how hard math can be. These are instances in which the teacher must convey to the student that even though math can be challenging, it is like any other subject, and is accomplishable through discipline, persistence, and hard work. These students' preconception of math as difficult and abstruse is often their biggest stumbling block, and as a teacher I help them to break down these mental barriers by providing alternative ways of looking at problems until the information "clicks." Positive leadership is the key to making students feel that they can get a lot from the class they are taking. It is our role as teachers to let them know that math is an incredibly exciting field and that the possibilities are endless. But it is also our role to show them that achievement does not come for free and effort is a primary factor in the formula for success. I feel that we have the tools now, more than ever, to make teaching a very rewarding experience for both my students and ourselves.

The curse of the easy a

Many current music educators grew up in a time when being in an ensemble was solely about playing the music for the next concert. I personally cannot recall ever doing a worksheet or any real music theory work while in high school. It seemed that all I had to do to get an "A" was come to my lessons, play at the concerts, and otherwise stay out of trouble. Outside practice was expected but not enforced. I did not realize until many years later that this method of teaching had set me up for years of mediocrity and frustration. The primary effect of giving a student an A for doing very little work produces much the same effect that we see in society where people become dependent on entitlement programs. Being given something for nothing slowly undermines a person's motivation and softens their personal initiative. In the music classroom this translates into producing a stagnant musician that has no driving force to improve his or her musical abilities. For many years I suffered with wondering why the members of my ensemble wasn't improving the way I felt they should. Finally I concluded that it was my fault for not pushing them hard enough. I had fallen back into my mentor's footsteps and had been cranking out the easy A's to my students regardless of what they truly deserved. The grading rule of thumb that is used in other classes should also be used in the music classroom. This rule of thumb states that an A is to be reserved for excellent work while a C is given for work that is simply average. If you were to take this rule and apply it to your students, would they get the same grade that you gave them on their last report card? How did they come to earn the A that they received? Was it simply for showing up to class or was there real, verifiable learning going on? The day that I realized my mistake and started requiring more work from my students the ensemble seemed to blossom almost overnight. I began requiring two hours of home practice each week, weekly theory worksheets, and mandatory private lessons or group sectionals. By the next concert I was already seeing a difference. By the end of the third quarter the new scale memorization requirements I threw in had turned my jazz and pep bands into the best groups that I had ever conducted. The attitudes of my students also changed. They realized that they were improving and that their hard work was indeed paying off. This in turn made them more interested in performing and made them want to practice even more. Perhaps most important of all, requiring more of my students also required more of myself as a teacher. I started reading educational journals again, determined to improve myself as a conductor and as a teacher. I started writing about my experiences to help other people improve and learn from my mistakes. These simple things breathed new life into a career that was on the verge of being consumed by apathy. I love teaching again, and it is all because I finally broke free from the bonds of being a mediocre band director. If you care for your students and want them to come to love and appreciate music as much as you do, never again give away an easy A.

The dot com era is back

In a recent article titled "Internet use threatens to overtake TV in Canada" it discusses the threat of online marketing to traditional media sources in Canada. This isn't a a threat anymore in the US. It is a fact. An article written by Thomas Mucha from Business 2.0 says: People are spending more time online than watching TV, which gives marketers a better chance to reach consumers in a place where they are just one click away from making a purchase. "More than 75 percent of companies using the Internet to advertise report confidence in their return on investment," writes the study's lead author, Jupiter Research senior analyst Gary Stein. This confidence, Stein argues, will sustain spending momentum across all the key online ad areas: paid search, display ads, classified ads, and rich media. Interesting to note that two studies are similar. Although The Ipsos Reid study of Canada claims radio is losing more interest than TV in Canada, it may soon lose to the Internet as well. Mr. Mucha claims 40 percent of total spending by 2010 will be paid advertisements on Google, Yahoo and MSN to an estimate of $19 billion per year. Not much wonder why the search engines are trying to dominate each other and the marketplace. The one that becomes the most popular will also make the most money. What will become of the little guy? Will it put an end to buying keywords for ad placement on search engines? Will the small business owner get shoved out of the picture? Maybe not altogether... but let's face it. If GM decides they want to use the keywords you are using, can you afford to compete? The search engines will be laughing "all the way to the bank" and the cost per clicks will just keeping going up... (he-he) similar to the price of gasoline at the pumps these days. Even though the cost of clicks may get pricey, the major search engines will always have to index relevant websites and include these results and return them on any keyword search. Professional sites (versus linkfarm, affiliate, spam sites) will always be in favour, and the sooner business can get their company sites built, if they haven't already; the better. Google seems to be the top search engine right now, and new sites often get sandboxed. If they hold on to their dominant position, new websites want to make sure this doesn't happen to them. I've always felt that there was something Google was doing that gave some sites more relevance than others in its index, but wasn't sure how it was applied. At the Search Engine Strategies conference last week in San Jose, California, Rand Fishkin learned that Google places some new Web sites, "regardless of their merit, or lack thereof, in a sort of probationary category" for six months to a year to "allow time to determine how users react to a new site, who links to it, etc." On a final piece of advice he suggests: "Several people have also predicted that Yahoo! or MSN may take up similar techniques to help stop spam. This phenomenon could seriously undermine new SEO/Ms and new campaigns, but it is a possibility. My recommendation is not to discount this possibility and launch projects or at least holding sites and their promotional efforts ASAP. The web environment right now is still relatively friendly to new sites, but will certainly become more competitive and unforgiving with time, no matter what search engine filters exist." Although it is starting to sound a little like the "Dot Com era is back" it will be a little different this time around. In 2000 when it went bust, it is partly because the percentage of consumers purchasing online didn't justify the amount of spending. There was a lack of confidence. It is different now. Jupiter's study shows that "73 percent of Americans who use the Internet have made a purchase online and four out of five of these potential shoppers have responded to an online ad."

    The earth as an onion

Despite thousands of years of gazing at the stars, we’ve never found another planet like Earth. Who would’ve thought looking inward would reveal the Earth is formed like an onion. A Complicated Planet Indeed When discussing the onion-like nature of the Earth, it is important to mention there is some debate as to what constitutes a layer of the planet. This is particularly true when one starts discussing the areas around the core of the Earth. Nonetheless, there are readily accepted general categories regarding the makeup of the Earth. The lithosphere is the rocky ground upon which we live. Technically, it is comprised of the crust of the planet and the upper, brittle mantle below the crust. It is approximately 100 km in thickness on average and includes all the oceans, mountains, deepest canyons and tectonic plates. The mantle is the next layer below the lithosphere. The mantle consists of hot, molten rock and is the birthplace of new crust and recycling point for old crust. The mantle is hot enough and far enough below the crust of the Earth that there is little empirical evidence supporting scientist’s claims on the exact makeup. Instead, deductions are made from studying new material coming from the mantle in areas where the tectonic plates are separating. To make things a bit more confusing, a layer of the upper mantle is known as the asthenosphere. This area is considered highly volatile because of severe pressure and heat factors. The asthenosphere is believed to be the first area where the crust of the Earth actually becomes molten. The outer core lies a few thousand miles below the crust. While this may sound like a vague estimation, the simple fact is there is no clear evidence supporting a particular depth. Regardless, the outer core is a highly pressurized, liquid material roughly 2,200 km thick. It is believe the outer core is comprised of a nickel-iron alloy mix, which is also believed to be the originating source of the magnetic field of the Earth. At the very center of the planet is the inner core. Little is known about the inner core other than basic principles. The core is believed to be primarily iron and massively dense. Due to gravity and extremely high pressures, the inner core is believed to be solid. Regardless of how you categorize the makeup of the Earth, it is clear our planet is unique in the known galaxy.

The earth is a hot rod

For many years it was believed the Earth was the center of the Universe. Alas, this was disproved for a number of reasons including the fact the planet was moving quickly through space. The Ultimate Turbocharged Vehicle Once our egotistical view of being the center of the universe was disproved, the goal of figuring out how fast we are moving through space came front and center. These days, the rather interesting answer is there are three different speeds. No, the planet doesn’t move at different speeds. It is more a matter of perspective and how we define movement. The issue comes down to whether we measure the orbit as a matter of time or pure acceleration. The speed of the Earth is defined three ways. The sidereal methodology calculates the orbit speed for one revolution around the sun in relation to the sun and stars and is a measure of time. The tropical year is also a measure of time, but refers to how long it takes one point on the earth to make a revolution around the sun between two equinoxes. Finally, the pace can also be calculated in good old miles per hour. While we consider a day to be 24 hours, it is actually a bit less because the Earth is moving through space according to the sidereal methodology. In relation to the stars, a concept known as solar time, this means a day is actually 3 minutes and 56 seconds shorter than we think. As a result, the speed of the earth using the sidereal method is roughly 364 days, 2 hours and 1 minute to complete one revolution around the sun. The tropical year methodology arrives at a different time measurement for the Earth in relation to a revolution around the sun. This is due to the fact that the movement of the Earth through space in relation to celestial bodies other than the Sun is discounted. In tropical year methodology, we circle the sun in 365.24 days. The final method for calculating the movement of the Earth is pure forward momentum. Man has built some extremely fast machines in his time, but nothing matches the hot rod known as the Earth. The average pace of the Earth as it moves through space is approximately 67,000 miles per hour. Let’s see Ferrari or Porsche top that!

The effects of the banning online gambling

Everyone talks about the negative impact of online gambling, but they are not talking about the negative impact of banning online gambling. A reason for banning online casinos was to make sure that underage children were not using thee parents credit cards to gamble online, but besides the fact that most online casinos did everything possible to ensure to verify the age of the account holder before allowing any gambling to occur, but by banning it you are only stopping the law abiding casinos from taking bets and not the less reputable online casinos. They will use third party account like PayPal ore Click2pay which provide a loophole in the new law. By banning an activity especially such a popular activity as online gambling all that can be expected to happen is for people to find ways around the law, such as the Speakeasies of the 1920’s. A Speakeasy was a nightclub that served Alcohol during prohibition and was usually hidden in the back rooms of pet stores and innocent looking book stores. Every time a speakeasy was raided the next night another one was opened, and this is what will happen with these online casinos. If the government finds one operating in the USA and gets it shut down or manages to stop the money flowing to it then another will open. By regulating online gambling the government would know exactly who was running the casino to make sure they were running it honestly and within all the laws, and it would help make sure that the criminal element did not get rich and gain power a second time in the history of the USA because of a bad lawmaking decision. Another reason given for the ban of online gambling was to help protect against a rise in problem gamblers from have casino gamming in your home 24 hrs a day, but no proof has ever been found that shows that people who would normally not be inclined to go to a casino and gamble would decide to do it just because it was now in their homes. The facts actually show a steady rate of people with gambling problems and growing at the same rate it has been growing for over 25 years. Many experts are now saying that there are some positives to the online gambling ban, but those positives would be even better if the industry was properly legalized and not, just by putting a mostly unenforceable law in place. But this to be a pattern the government seems to always make, it is much like the war on drugs. Last time I checked thee was still a drug problem in this country even though drugs are illegal, yet in countries like Holland where the use of soft drugs like hash and grass are legal the number people with drug problems is much lower per capita then in the USA. This is because the money that is brought in the form of taxes from these sales goes to fund the public schools where they properly educate kids on the negative effects of these drugs, so most of the people who smoke are tourists and not the locals. Maybe one day the government will learn from its past mistakes and make things right.

The fascination with astrology how good

In the 1920's, there was a big sensation in the US. Two sisters had photographed fairies flying around flowers in their garden. It was an unbelievable event. The two gave interviews and talked stuff. It was after more than sixty years that one sister revealed the whole thing was a hoax. The fairies were made of paper. Nonetheless they captured public imagination. It was something different and unbelievable, but was revealed a hoax later. But thousands of paranormal and supernatural things remain the way they are - uncanny and unimaginable. No one has explanations. All the same, people love to know more and indulge in these pursuits. Very often we have astrologers predicting events. Most people love the opportunity to get one's palm read by an astrologer. Believe the stuff or scoff at it. But the whole idea is fascinating to humans. Many people read the headlines of a newspaper later, but read their horoscope first. Astrologers and fortune tellers may talk in deceptive and ambiguous terms. Knowing the same, people flock to them. Science and scientists try a lot. They never come up with satisfying explanations to paranormal and psychic stuff. Human beings are a curious lot. Issues with explanations satisfy them. But things with no explanations fascinate them. Take this one. Former US presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy - Kennedy's life was very nearly a copy of Lincoln's. Both became presidents after similar victories. Held office for nearly same number of days. Both were assassinated outside a theater near their car. The name of the killer was the same in both cases. These two incidents happened more than eighty years apart. Science does not have any explanation to this. People are intrigued by such happenings. Human minds are adventurous. Always in search of thrills. No wonder, why horror movies are so popular. Everyone knows it's all make believe. People still get white with fear inside cinemas and dream of ghosts for next few days. Calling spirits of dead people has become an industry in Britain. You have Gypsy ladies peering in a psychic glass ball and calling spirits of the dead people you want to get in contact with. Forget the common man, British aristocracy has been known to visit them more than anyone else. Science-fiction - a word that sums up the topic. All the science-fiction novels, movies is make-believe. Nothing is real but every thing's in a proper scientific way. Giant spaceships, alien landings, UFOs kidnapping people all happen in science fiction. Actually there's a group of people in US who claim to have been kidnapped by UFOs. They believe, they have had extra-terrestrial contact. What's true, what's not only time will tell. Now if there were a time machine to travel in the future like in the movies...
