    Grab a bible commentary

Whether you have been studying the Bible for years or if you have just read it for the first time there is always more that can be learned and understood. For Christians, the Bible is the ultimate source of truth and the guidebook for living. Therefore, it is important that each Christian understand the Bible the best that he or she can. A Bible commentary can be one of the best tools for getting the most out of Scripture. Do you remember using Cliff's Notes to make it through a literature class during school? Basically, a Bible commentary is like a Cliff's Notes for the Bible. It gives explanation to difficult passages and gives in depth description about things like characters, setting, and theme. A Bible commentary is a great supplement to your daily Bible reading. Consider reading a passage of Scripture and then reading what your Bible commentary has to say about that same passage. You will be amazed at the depth and insight your Bible commentary gives. Having a good Bible commentary or two is a great resource for people who are studying the Bible for classes or for those who are preparing to lead studies or discussions on the Bible. Almost like having your own Bible teacher, a great Bible commentary is one of the best tools you will ever have. It is great because unlike a teacher, your Bible commentary can be with you all the time. If you are thinking of purchasing a Bible commentary for the first time, check with your pastor or with other friends for their recommendations about which Bible commentary might be the best for you. Every Bible commentary is written from a different theological perspective, so be sure that you buy a Bible commentary that matches with the beliefs of you and your local church. You may even be able to borrow a Bible commentary or two from a friend so that you can try them out and compare them before making a purchase of your own. You can get a Bible commentary at most local bookstores, Christian bookstores, or online. If you live in a town with a college or university, you can check out their bookstore as well. Whatever it takes to get your hands on a Bible commentary, it is worth it. Your reading and understanding of Scripture will never be the same. You will grow deeper in your knowledge of the ways of God with each reading of Scripture and with each time you use your Bible commentary. Just be sure not to stop reading your Bible just because you have a Bible commentary. Even the best Bible commentary cannot replace the treasure of the Bible itself.

    Green burials

Currently in the UK around 75% of all funerals are completed with a cremation rather than a traditional burial incorportating headstones. This figure shown a substantial increase since 1940, were only 10% of all funerals ended in cremation. The growth in cremation was due to a number of influences; 1) Perception that cremation was a more responsible form of burial minimising space required and reducing public health issues. 2) Decline in religious concerns regarding cremation. 3) Cost - A typical cremation is approximately Ј250 compared with Ј750 for a grave burial including the cost of headstones and memorials. 4) Lack of availability of traditional burial sites. Many existing cemeteries are now full and new developments have long waiting lists. A major report completed in 1997 found that in many inner city areas only nine years of non-denominational burial space left available. However in light of recent publicity regarding climate change and global warming there is a renewed interest in traditional burials. There is no doubt that cremation uses gas to burn a wooden coffin, omitting harmful carbon dioxide gases into the environment. Thus we have seen a growth in ‘’eco-friendly’’ burial services, however many of these solutions tend to be expense and hold only a niche interest. We have however also seen a growth since the mid nineties in Woodland or Natural burial sites. This activity effectively uses new burial sites in the natural environment and has taken advantage of the relaxation in Local Authority regulations and the need to generate more burial sites outside of normal cemeteries. Many of these projects now have a strong commercial agenda and can be seen running local advertising campaigns encouraging people to ‘book’ their space. Many Natural Burial sites promote the planting of a tree to act as a memorial in place of the normal memorial headstones. With over 500,000 deaths in England & Wales each year many believe a more intensive and efficient ‘natural’ burial system is required that can meet current demand and prove economically viable when compare to the cost of cremation. Ideas have included the reuse of existing cemeteries and burials without coffins, however many experts feel a more radical approach may be required.

    Guidance a true story

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) My friend Ron had been laid off from his job. He was his young family's sole support. He loved and trusted the Lord, but he felt little sense of guidance about his future. Trying to collect his thoughts, he decided to make a day hike by himself. An experienced hiker, he went up the mountain trial of a lone peak in Southern California in December. It was a grey winter day, and the mountain peak was wrapped in clouds. As he climbed the trail he hit heavy fog and had to carefully watch his steps. He knew the farthest place he could go on the trail, when he had to turn back in order to make it home by nightfall. All through that long hike he could not see the mountain or the vista he knew lay below him. There was only the fog and trail in front of him and a thin line of dripping shrouded pines on both sides of him. There was no clear sense of direction or future - exactly the way he felt about his life. As he went on, he neared the point on the trial where he would have to turn around. He was tempted to go on, but he had promised his wife he would be off the trail by sunset, and he had just enough time left to make the return trip by then. Still, there was only the floating fog and the gray path in front of him. Then, just as he was on the point of turning around and trudging home, the sun broke through. The fog lifted, the clouds brightened and there, directly in front of him, reared the great mass of the snow-capped peak, and the sunlight kindled the white of the snow into golden fire. Below the trail was the valley, green and brown and beautiful. Ron stayed soaking up the sight for just a few minutes before the clouds lowered and the fog rolled in again. But that was all he needed. Certain now that God was directing his way no matter what his circumstances, his steps were light as he turned around and made his way back home.

Harvard professors and tv producers do they really know much about the second coming of christ

In a world bent on acquiring ever more knowledge being referred to as being intelligent has supplanted the idea of a moral and decent life. I attended a funeral where the deceased was known for having been a cranky, ungodly, unloving man throughout his entire life. I thank God I wasn’t asked to give the eulogy. The person that had to deliver the eulogy was hard put to find a decent word to say about the deceased. I will never forget the single word he was able to find in praise for decedent. He said “he was as we all know, a very intelligent man.” While being intelligent has never been a requirement for entering the kingdom of God it is also not required for interpreting the scriptures or the exposition of biblical prophecies. That does not mean that it is left to the ignorant to tell what is in the scripture. It is the believing and faithful alone that are allowed to see what the word of God is saying. Jesus said the Pharisees heard what he was saying but because they chose not to believe it, its truth was concealed from them regardless of their intelligence. Both the Pharisees and today’s scholars and scoffers are still making true the adage that “The worldly say let me see and then I’ll believe while the Godly say I believe and thus they see” That revelation and understanding is kept from certain people has nothing to do with their intelligence or the lack of it. In fact it is God himself who promises to keep them in the dark because of their unbelief. He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. Matthew 13:11 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Luke 8:10 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. Luke 10:21 The Apostle Paul scoffed at the scoffers especially those who fancied themselves men of letters and of science. O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:20,21 The learned have never understood the principle of revelation. It is not what we learn that shows what God is saying but it is what God reveals to us about what he has said that matters. This principle is seen in Christ’s answer to Peter when Peter told him that he knew Jesus was the Son of the Living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Matthew 16:17 When the history channel aired its review of the Christian view of the apocalypse they called on several prominent university professors to comment on the renewed interest in the doctrines of the second coming of Christ. Many allusions were also drawn from movies like “Left Behind and the Omen. After presenting what is commonly believed in the church today about the second coming, the remainder of the program was used to de-bunk or cast doubt on those views. Calling on the views and comments of unbelieving doctors of divinity and TV and Hollywood puppets, they managed to raise more questions than they answered. Although not a laughing matter it seemed as if they were getting their best answers from Dr. Twiddle D. D. and Rufus T. Firefly. I think it’s safe to say that the apostles, prophets and certified bible preachers in any generation are far more believable than those the history channel chose to speak for them. Before Christ was born in Bethlehem King Herod wanted to know where he was to be born. He asked his scribes and priests who after checking the writings of the prophets they informed Herod that he would be born in Bethlehem of Ephrata. Two amazing things can be learned from this little bit of scripture. First, what could be known about Christ’s first coming was readily available through prophecies contained in scripture. The second was that this knowledge was used to perform one of the bloodiest child massacres in the history of the world. Nothing much has changed over the years. All that can be known about Christ’s second coming can still be found in the scriptures. And for those who are unbelieving and evil that knowledge will be scoffed at or misused to conduct themselves and others to their own inevitable judgment.

Have you got your numerology report made

The foundation stone of numerology is your date of birth. Well, it something that is given to you without your asking. There must be an underlying divine grace for it. Going by this belief, there can't be a mistake in it as it is the divine gift. So, the foundation stone of numerology seems to be at the right place. With this much information, you can get your numerology report made by a skilled numerologist. Though these days, you can get your report made with the help of software as well. Based on this divine gift, a numerology report is made by combining the sum of numbers in your birth date with the sum from numerically powered letters of your name. Once you have got your numerology report, you can know about your personal traits and details from a practicing numerologist. The scope of numerological predictions is really vast. Numerologists claim that the power and vibrations of numbers are so powerful that they can beat the moon and cross the stars (in the literal sense); they can listen and understand the music of Nature. Predictions about past, present and future are a matter of kindergarten stuff to a learned numerologist. A skilled numerologist with added spiritual credentials usually makes the correct predictions, since his motive is not only to make money out of his knowledge but also to serve his client. Anything that appeals to the emotions of human beings, anything that promises to mitigate the hardships, and to take you to the land of plenty and prosperity should appeal to you. You are willing to follow any course of action to achieve that result. And all numerologists precisely know that. As a result a number of astrology and numerology establishments have come up and flourished online as well as offline. They furnish you with the daily, monthly and yearly numerology reports and your guidance and security for a price. If there is any pitfall, remedies are suggested. You will be on their mailing list and the report will arrive through post or through the internet, as agreed upon by you. The regular FAQs will clear most of the in principle doubts about numerology. You can also get what is styled as Soul Mate Synergy report to understand each of you better. Such numerological reports are in great demand in the countries where divorce rate has crossed as high as 52%. But for such compatibility reports, the rates could have been still higher! All in all, to get numerology report month after month is good from the practical point of view. It provides some entertaining insight about the personality that is you and that is precisely the best part of numerology! The report reveals your potentiality!

    Having hope in god

I had never been particularly interested in religion especially after my schooldays when it was rammed down my throat – it just seemed so boring and unreal with so many rules and regulations that to me it was just something for “sad” people living their sad and pathetic lives. I’d heard of stories where people had had “amazing experiences” and apart from thinking what liars they were I also felt that they should be locked away in mental institutions to protect the rest of us sane people from their delusions. Well, I became one of these people just under three years ago after the most amazing experience that I would never have believed if someone else had told me it had happened to them. My family and friends can vouch for this because they have seen the change in my life over the last three years so it can’t be dismissed as just a “flash in the pan” I went from living on my own and quickly drinking and smoking myself to death to a guy that was reunited with his wife and family and has never had the urge to touch a drink or a cigarette since. I had been on an Alpha course (a 12 week informal course that discusses who Jesus is and what Christianity is all about) a couple of years before and although that had been fun I had done nothing further – it was only when I was so desperate and at the end of the road that I remembered the course I’d been on and just yelled out to God in sheer desperation rather than in any form of hope or expectation that HE would actually do anything for me – the result of this was however instant and I don’t know why I was so blessed. Life is just so brilliant now and I feel that this peace, happiness and pure inner contentment that I have on a daily basis is so wonderful and couldn’t even be compared to having monetary riches beyond your wildest dreams that I just wanted to share this with the rest of mankind. The book I wrote will show you what I did, what is on offer to you all and that there are no silly rules and regulations which were MAN MADE and nothing whatsoever to do with God. Why not just have a look for yourself – you’ve nothing to lose and truly, what you may gain is priceless – you can then do the same for others – what a legacy that would be. A recent testimonial, exerts of which are included below, show just why I want this book to reach and touch people who are looking for what I’ve found. I LAVISHED your book. My life was in shambles; my wife had divorced me and tonight I was in such a state of despair that I had rung my Mother to tell her that suicide was my only option - after reading your book I have a peace about me that I have not had since I was 19 and I'm 56 now. Thank you thank you for allowing God to speak through you to me - I now feel a complete relief from all the pain and misery I have known for the past 37 years and I thank you for saving my life - actually GOD SAVED MY LIFE but you threw me the life preserver - may God continue to bless you, your family and your ministry. Healed using hands anointing oil and prayer

Two faith healings have stuck in this writer's memory over the years. Both of these healings occurred while he was still pastor of a denomination church. The two Healing Delivery Vehicles used were "the laying on of hands" and the "anointing with oil accompanied with prayer." These two healings occurred in a revival meeting we led in a denomination church in East Texas. He had felt impressed to have a time of healing ministry for a few nights, but held off on it because those dear people were denominational and were not strong believers in healing. After asking the pastor what he thought about it, he said, “Go for it. Have a healing time during the next service.” So we did. That night, twenty two people came to the front where the pastor had set up a healing line. Most of them were healed right on the spot, right then and there. Here are the descriptions of the two healings that really stand out in this writer's memory. First, an elderly man who had diabetes came for healing. He was seventy two years old at the time. He was healed of his diabetes then and there. Touching base with the pastor years later, he said that this elderly man had never taken another injection of insulin to that time. The second healing, still vividly remembered, involved a little girl about three years old. She had some kind of seizures. These terrible seizures gave her a dangerously high fever. Then she would pass out. He dad brought her to the healing line holding her in his arms. She had passed out from the seizure and its resulting fever. She too was healed that same night, although we could tell no difference in her at the time. Her dad carried her from the building that night, still in his arms and still passed out from the seizure and fever. By the next morning, however, her fever was gone. A year or two later, we asked the pastor about her. He said that she had no more seizures. She was wonderfully, completely healed that night. All her dad did was bring her down for prayer and anointing. He brought her to the Great Physician. Now look at the two Healing Delivery Vehicles used in these healings and the Scriptures that support them. First, we look at "the laying on of hands" for healing. Mark 16:18 18...they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (KJV) We did this (the laying on of hands) and people recovered. Anyone who is a believer in Christ can do this very thing and get healing results. This is not the exclusive activity of preachers, pastors and theologians. This is for any believer in Christ. You can do this as well as this writer or anyone else. Next we look at the "anointing with oil accompanied with prayer by the elders." James 5:14-15 14Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (KJV) In this meeting, the pastor assembled those he considered "the elders." The congregation had been instructed that "the elders," along with himself and this writer, would be at the front to minister healing by "anointing with oil and prayer" according to these Scriptures. They would also minister healing by the "laying on of hands." As the people came forward, these two Healing Delivery Vehicles were put into use. Then the healings began in response to these acts of faith performed by all who worked the front that night. Learn this! These two Healing Delivery Vehicles deliver the goods. If you need healing, study these two Scriptures and put them into practice. This is the Bible way of faith healing. Put them into practice. They work for us when we work them.

Healing and prosperity scriptures include all christians

Deut 8:18 18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. (KJV) This Scripture was written to and for the Abrahamic Seed Group. When a Gentile accepts Christ as his/her Personal Savior, he/she is immediately grafted into this Abrahamic Seed Group. Consequently, Gentile Christians are included in the great prosperity promise above. They are now Abraham's Seed by grafting and are entitled to participate in this Abrahamic wealth promise. Consider the reason given above why God gave us the power to get wealth. He did it in order to establish the Abrahamic Covenant with us also. The word translated “establish” here should have been translated by our English word “continue.” This supernatural power to get wealth is God’s sign that we are now supernaturally included in the Covenant with Abraham. Furthermore, this power to get wealth is neither intelligence, ability nor talent. It is the ability to plant financial seed and reap a financial harvest from it. This is how Abraham amassed wealth. He planted. Then he reaped. This is God’s universal Law of Wealth accumulation. We sow. We reap. This is the power to get the wealth in the above Scripture. Look at the word "strength" in the Scripture below. Acts 3:6-7 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength. (KJV) The word "strength" above translates a Greek word that is a dead ringer for our English word "steroid." In other words, when Peter commanded healing into this man, it was equivalent to a massive injection of Holy Ghost steroids. He received strength. He leaped up. He shouted. He walked. He was whole and strong. This belongs to us today also. Furthermore, this can also be administered the same way today that Peter administered it then. He spoke a command and it was so. The man received Holy Ghost Steroids and was healed. Christians today are also authorized to do this. Finally, Peter declared that the healing of this man had nothing to do with his holiness or power. In other words, Peter let the World know that he, himself, had nothing to do with this healing. It was all of God, through the use of Jesus’ name. Acts 3:11-13 11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. 12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. (KJV) In verse 11 above, when the people saw that the lame man was healed, they wondered greatly what had caused it. In verse 12 above, Peter asked them why they were looking as him and John as though Their own power and holiness had anything to do with healing the man. His meaning Was that neither their power not holiness had anything to do with the man’s healing. In verse 13 above, Peter attributed the healing to the God of the covenant with Abraham. This covenant, of course, included Abraham’s Seed Group, beginning with Isaac and Jacob. Christians today are still included in the Abrahamic Seed Group. Our inclusion into this group is the reason Christians are still authorized to do the same thing today that Peter did and for the same reason. We are included, both in the Abrahamic Seed Group, and in the healing and prosperity aspect of it. Finally, we see that Peter called upon no committees, held no prayer meetings, asked no man for permission. He just spoke the healing command using Jesus’ name and it was done. He was healed. Christians today are also authorized to do this.

    Healing scriptures not seen before

There are many great healing scriptures. Sometimes, however, you run across one that you have not seen before. Or if you have seen it, God simply has not yet quickened it (made it come alive) for you. Then he quickens it for you and you see complete new revelations in it that you have never seen before. Isaiah reveals one of these hidden, healing Scriptures to us. Isa 57:19 I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him. (KJV) Who is the person who is afar off? Who is the person who is near? To answer the above question, we must understand the same identical words, terms and/or phrases that are used to describe the Abrahamic Seed Group in the Old Testament (the saved Jews) also describe the Abrahamic Seed Group in the New Testament (the saved Jews with saved Gentile Christians grafted in.) (We call the Abrahamic Seed Group Jews in the Old Testament, but we call them Christians in the Old Testament.) This is the same identical group of people in both Testaments. In the New, however, Gentile Christians are simply grafted into the Old Testament Group.) Because of this Gentile Christian grafting, the same words, terms and /or descriptive phrases are used to describe the same Abrahamic Seed Group in both Testaments. One of the words, terms and/or descriptive phrases used to identify the Abrahamic Seed Group in the Old Testament was the expression near. Conversely, the Gentiles in the Old Testament were referred to as far off. This resulted in the existence of two distinct groups of people in the Old Testament era. Saved Jews composed the first group, the near group. Unsaved Gentiles made up the second group, the far group. Keep in mind as we progress here, that healing belongs only to the near group. It did not belong to the Gentile far group until Jesus becomes the peace between the two groups. Also remember in our verse above, Isa 57:19, that we are watching closely just two terms: near and far. Again, the person near is the Jew in the Old Testament. The person who is far off is the Gentile in the Old Testament. These same two terms (near and far off) are also used by Paul in the New Testament in Ephesians. But here we see Gentile Christians transferred from the far off group into the near group by grafting. Eph 2:13-14 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle (KJV) In other words, the blood of Christ, when accepted by Gentiles, forces an instantaneous, supernatural transfer of us Gentiles from one group to the other. We are supernaturally snatched from the far off group and supernaturally place equally into the near group! Now during the Christian era, these two groups, the far off and the near, are merged into just one group, the near group. From Jesus’ death onward, Gentiles who receive Christ are grafted into the near group right along with the saved Jews. Furthermore, we Gentile Christians stand in this group on an equal footing with the Jews and we participate in the Abrahamic blessing of healing. We both now make up the near group, known as the Abrahamic Seed Group and are both promised healing from the hand of God. The point is this; God will now heal the far off person as well as the near person because we Gentile Christians are no longer far off. We Gentile Christian have been brought into the near group by grafting. No wonder Isaiah 57:19 said above, “I will heal him.” Why not? God promised healing in the Abrahamic covenant to both Jew and Gentile. No wonder Isaiah saw this and recorded it for us. Now you can see that Christian healing traces its roots to the Old Testament and to the Jews themselves. Learn the terms, words, and/or descriptive phrases of the Abrahamic Seed Group in both Testaments and you will have an understanding of what belongs to you that you never had before.

Healing with neither power nor holiness

Thank God that our level of power or holiness has nothing to do with our ability to get our selves or our loved ones healed. Take the case of Peter. In Acts 3, he used the name of Jesus to get the man lying at the Temple Gate healed. In so doing, he declared that his (Peter’s) level of power or holiness had nothing to do with the healing of this helpless man. Acts 3:12 12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? (KJV) I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this principle: Getting your loved one healed is not dependent upon your level of power of holiness! If it was, then no one would ever be healed. Even Peter knew his level of power or holiness had nothing to do with the lame man’s healing. The devil will sidetrack you in this misunderstanding first. If he can make you believe that the healing of yourself or your loved one is in any way conditioned upon your own level of power or holiness, neither you nor your loved one will be healed! Why? Because not one of us, including Peter, has enough power or holiness to get any one healed. The proper approach to healing disarms the devil completely as he tries to peddle his “you are not powerful or holy enough” lie. You see, the anointing for healing comes on an act of faith based upon one or more healing scriptures used with Jesus’ name. Find one or more of these healing scriptures and do what they tell you to do. The healing anointing comes on an act of faith based on our obedience to the healing scriptures. This is the mechanics of healing by faith. This is the way it works. Obedience to a healing scripture used with Jesus name is our victory. Thank God! Our level of power or holiness has nothing to do with our ability to get a loved one healed. That ability is based on obeying the word of God in conjunction with using with Jesus’ name.

    Hidden riches

From a historical perspective, 'The DaVinci Code' is good fiction ... I do think the book has provided a very real cultural benefit, though. By weaving many tales of medieval Christian mysticism into its story line, the book has stimulated a multitude of readers to look beyond the veneer of printed words in search of higher meanings. This is good, because both literature and history contain them in abundance. The richness of the written word and the refining effects of time have produced works essential to our lives' inner guidance. Hopefully, more people will be inspired by this work of fiction to more fully explore other tomes that have even deeper meanings. I'm referring to the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran. Many of the world's tensions have their roots in opinion leaders who espouse literal interpretations of those volumes. Even more preposterous is that many of these issues are fomented by their own self-serving versions of those interpretations. From the silly 'War on Christmas' campaign being waged by some religious conservatives in the USA to the tragic turf wars over perceived sacred grounds in the Middle East, power bases masquerading as pulpits exploit literal definitions of holy words to seek nothing more than an increase in their sphere of influence. It is not enough for them to sway likeminded individuals, they cannot wield sufficient power until they can alter the lives of those who have chosen a different moral path, no matter how independently righteous that path may be. I believe an effective means of curbing this troubling tendency is to expose the shallowness of such literal espousings. And so, I would like to share an article written in 2000 by Rabbi H David Rose, entitled: "The Literal Truth? Pondering the Variety of Interpretations in Scripture." It is one of the best dissertations on the subject that I have ever read. The balance of today's column consists of Rabbi Rose's words: "Dear God," Donna wrote. "Last week it rained for five days straight. We thought it would be like Noah's ark, but it wasn't. I'm glad because you could only take two of each animal into the ark, and I have three cats." A professor of molecular biology wrote in a national magazine, "Given the dimensions of the ark and its wooden construction, the first stiff breeze would have broken it up. Its capacity was only a fraction of what was needed for the animals and their food supply, not to speak of their specialized needs for housing." Are the narratives in the Bible fact or fiction? Were the prophets truth-tellers, or great storytellers? Did Methuselah live upon this earth for 969 years, as we are taught in Genesis? Did Abraham send his first child, Ishmael, out into the wilderness and almost sacrifice his son, Isaac? And is any of this relevant to us and to our lives? Many who read the Bible do so in a literal way. For these people, be they Christian or Jew, the choice is simple: Either the Bible is the exact written record of God's words, or it is not. If it is God's word, then it is to be followed exactly as written. If not, then why bother? Others, including myself, are convinced that to read our sacred texts literally is to miss the point. To do so, in my opinion, is to corrupt and stagnate the ever-growing relevance of our holy texts. The Zohar (a book of Jewish mysticism) teaches, "Were the Torah (Bible) a mere book of tales and everyday matters, we could compose a text of even greater excellence. The Torah has clothed itself in the outer garments of the world, and woe to the person who looks at the garment as being Torah." In other words, the essence of God's message is hidden from a person who takes a literal view. The word is not the message; the message lies behind the words. Consider the story of Noah's ark. A literal interpretation misses the relevance and profound moral symbolism of the story, of the world flood and its implications for humanity. The vital lesson of Noah's story is the human capacity for self-destruction and the ability of one person to save the world. In our time, we possess the capability to quickly destroy creation through our nuclear power or to slowly and significantly damage our planet through waste and pollution. Like Noah's generation, we are also able to corrupt the purpose of our existence through moral failure. When we come to think that we or our creations are invincible, we soon find ourselves in deep water, just like the people of Noah's generation. Even the most powerful of human beings must face their limits or be brought low. The tale of Noah's ark is about confronting both our power and our limitations as individuals and as society. The story is true not because it ever happened, but because it keeps on happening. The Noah story is true, because it describes a drama we all face, generation after generation. When we go beyond the literal sense of the text, we find meaning and relevance. When we can see our own struggles in the text, we can then take hold of the meaning of our sacred texts. Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin, an authority on the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible and a giant of 19th century Judaism, maintained that the entire Hebrew Bible "possesses the nature and the central character of poetry." One must be aware of poetic allusions, metaphors and figurative expressions to appreciate the meaning of scripture. How could it be any other way? Hardly a verse in the Hebrew Bible can be understood verbatim. Take the statement, "And God said." Does God have a larynx? In what language did God speak? To read Torah with the question, "Did it happen?" in our minds is to think of the wrong question. As Elie Wiesel has taught, "Not everything that happened is true, nor did everything that is true necessarily happen." We all have the capacity to recognize truth in art, in movies and in plays, whether they accurately portray something that really happened or not. Imagine that two books are lying before us. The first book was written by a Dr. Smith, an eminent ophthalmologist. It describes a complicated surgery which restored the eyesight of a Ms. Jones. Ms. Jones is the author of the second book. In this book, Ms. Jones reports her fright, her anxiety and her pain. Then she tells of her exultation after the bandages were removed and she could see again. Should we ask which book is the truth? Each book has a different intention and shares a different perspective. The doctor's truth is not that of the patient. A single criterion of truth creates needless contradictions. Both are true. Similarly, there is no single true way to read scripture. Our sacred texts are sources of truth and meaning, and we must learn to open our eyes to them. A literal viewing of our traditional books may obscure the truths within them, or worse, cause us to turn away and not look again. Most of us learned scripture only as children. We were taught only literal explanations. When we grew up, we outgrew such literal fairy tales and left them tucked away with the tooth fairy and other such nonsense. As adults, our task in reading the treasures of our traditions and in living lives based on scripture is to uncover the layers of meaning. When we study, read and meditate on our sacred words, we discover their spritual implications. May we hold on to our sacred texts, and may they guide our lives and give meaning to all that we do.

His majesty s constancy notwithstanding culmination

This, and more to this purpose, His Majesty that now reigneth (and long, and long may he reign, and his offspring forever, "Himself and children, and children's always) knew full well, according to the singular wisdom given unto him by God, and the rare learning and experience that he hath attained unto; namely that whosoever attempteth anything for the public (especially if it pertain to Religion, and to the opening and clearing of the word of God) the same setteth himself upon a stage to be gloated upon by every evil eye, yea, he casteth himself headlong upon pikes, to be gored by every sharp tongue. For he that medleth with men's Religion in any part, medleth with their custom, nay, with their freehold; and though they find no content in that which they have, yet they cannot abide to hear of altering. Notwithstanding his Royal heart was not daunted or discouraged for this that colour, but stood resolute, "as a statue immovable, and an anvil not easy to be beaten into plates," as one [Suidas] saith; he knew who had chosen him to be a Soldier, or rather a Captain, and being assured that the course which he intended made for the glory of God, and the building up of his Church, he would not suffer it to be broken off for whatsoever speeches or practices. It doth certainly belong unto Kings, yea, it doth specially belong unto them, to have care of Religion, yea, it doth specially belong unto them, to have care of Religion, yea, to know it aright, yea, to profess it zealously, yea to promote it to the uttermost of their power. This is their glory before all nations which mean well, and this will bring unto them a far most excellent weight of glory in the day of the Lord Jesus. For the Scripture saith not in vain, "Them that honor me, I will honor," [1 Sam 2:30] neither was it a vain word that Eusebius delivered long ago, that piety towards God was the weapon and the only weapon, that both preserved Constantine's person, and avenged him of his enemies [Eusebius lib 10 cap 8].

    Hope the power that perseveres

The dictionary defines hope as “a looking out for something good; a belief that what we wish for will come.” Are you hoping for the positive outcome of your dream, a sickness, or finances? Do you see the desired end result in your mind’s eye so vividly that you can almost touch it? What is your hope based on? Were you very excited yesterday when the stock market jumped or the doctor gave an optimistic prognosis? How about today, when the market had a sudden drop and the hospital reported further complications in your condition? “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Heb. 11:1). Now, what does that mean? You mean that no matter how hard it gets and when everything points to disaster you still have to hope against all hope? So, if you clench your teeth, purse your lips and scrunch your eyes together in faith trusting your dilemma will pass, it should go, right? Well, let’s have a look how the Bible puts it. In the fifth book of Romans it tells us to even go so far as to glory in tribulation! As you delve into it you will discover that this is true because hardships are a time of testing. The more you learn to rely on hope, and by faith wait in expectation for the desired result, the more patience will develop. Patience will result in small breakthroughs which, in turn, provide you with the experience that no one can take away from you. When you experience a miracle, however small, you have the confidence that the next time you can believe for something even bigger and better! This whole process produces character. It generates a whole new you! Yes, one who has been hurt maybe, sick, depressed or beaten down emotionally, physically or spiritually. BUT... at the end of it you will have gained something. It may be wisdom of what not to do, a certain peace and strength you would never have realized you had, and a greater realization of who you really are. You did come out of it and now, having “been there and done that” you are in a position to help someone else through their struggles. “Hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Do you know the love of God? Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith, for the joy set before him, endured the cross. (Heb. 12:2) He is Emmanuel, which means: “God with us.” Even though he was God, he took on a human body, whereby he was subject to all the physical and emotional circumstances as you and me. But... he endured and is now seated at the right hand of the Father, where he has prepared a place for you! What’s more, with Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you have the same Holy Spirit living in you. You’re not alone. Inside of you there is an awesome power to persevere!

Hot topic evangelicals debate global warming

: The atmosphere within the evangelical community has been heating up since the Evangelical Climate Initiativewas introduced in early February. The statement, which is endorsed by more than 80 prominent evangelical leaders, asserts that climate change is an urgent problem and that the Christian faith mandates a strong response to global warming. Evangelicals have been reluctant to embrace environmental activism because of its connections with liberal agendas. The group as a whole has had a general tendency to prioritize spiritual rather than social and physical concerns. As scientific data increasingly supports observations of human-induced climate change, however, many are now taking action. “It is a very appropriate move in terms of a biblical basis and, in fact, long overdue,” said Fred Van Dyke, who teaches environmental ethics at Wheaton College. “The evangelical community has long associated the environmental agenda with a liberal agenda, but they are getting over it.” Roy Spencer, principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and former senior climate scientist with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, said he is concerned that the initiative focuses too strongly on activism and not enough on science. He helped the Interfaith Stewardship Alliancedraft a 19-page monograph on global warming called “An Examination of the Scientific, Ethical and Theological Implications of Climate Change Policy.” The alliance is a coalition of religious leaders, scientists, academics and policy experts committed to applying a biblical view of stewardship to environmental issues. In the monograph, the alliance said that climate change science remains inconclusive. “We cannot say for certain how much the planet may be warming, how much is due to human activities versus natural cycles, or whether these changes in global temperature would be mostly good or mostly bad for the majority of people,” Spencer wrote in the monograph. Other prominent evangelical figures — such as Focus on the Family chairman James Dobson, and Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries — have also said they are concerned about the Evangelical Climate Initiative’s stance on environmental policy. The media, in particular, has misrepresented the effort as the majority opinion among evangelicals, said Cal Beisner, an associate professor of historical theology and social ethics at Knox Theological Seminary and an adviser for the initiative. Because of this, he worked hard to discourage the 30-million member National Association of Evangelicals — which has refrained from establishing an official statement on climate change — from endorsing the initiative. “What I would caution against is equating fidelity to the gospel of Jesus Christ with endorsement of a particular environmental scenario or policy response to it,” said Beisner. “I am concerned that the ECI’s call to action hazards crossing the line in that regard.” Despite their differences, ECI and the alliance both state that global warming is a problem that must be addressed, and both are motivated by a concern for those living in poverty. The tension is over the appropriate policy response. ECI urges preventative action and argues mandatory emissions reduction policy is necessary to combat the progress of global warming, which will have the most impact on the poor living in low-lying coastal regions. The alliance argues it is more prudent to invest in technology that will allow humanity to cope with a changed global climate. It also says mandatory emissions reduction policy will force a general increase in the prices of all goods and services that depend on energy as a production factor – therefore, having the largest negative impact on the world’s poor “Right now we have a government that has done nothing effective about global warming and doesn’t listen to people like me — scientists,” said Mark Cane, professor of earth and climate science, and academic board member of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. “They do listen to evangelicals, however, so [the Evangelical Climate Initiative] plays an important saving role.”
