    Of lords and bishops

Of Lords and Bishops 1 Peter 1:15-1:16 (NIV, NIRV, TNIV, KJV) Of Lords and Bishops This is a look at titles within the Church. I have found out here lately that many people are upset with titles that many Churches are using within their organizational circle. Lets look at the Bible and see what God has to say. The First Title I want to look at is; “Reverand.” This first verse of scripture has been misinterpreted by many. Psa 111:9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name. “holy and reverend is his name” This section of the verse is what we are going to look deeper into. The word “holy” and “reverend” if you noticed is not capitalized, which signifies that these are not names of God but attributes of God. The same attributes that Jesus aspires us to be. Ref; 1st Peter 1:15,1:16, Lev. 11:44, 19:2, 20:7. For those who wish to create a controversy, they skip the word ”holy” and only concentrate on the word ”reverend.” There are many places in scripture that the word holy is used in signifying a man and a land. Lets look at the meaning of the word; 1belonging to, derived from, or associated with a divine power; sacred. 2regarded with or worthy of worship or veneration; revered: a holy book. 3living according to a strict or highly moral religious or spiritual system; saintly: a holy person. 4specified or set apart for a religious purpose: a holy place. 5.Solemnly undertaken; sacrosanct: a holy pledge. 6.Regarded as deserving special respect or reverence: The pursuit of peace is our holiest quest. Now lets look at the word ”reverend”. You say then; “What about the word reverend?” “reverend” ADJECTIVE; 1.Deserving reverence. 2.Relating to or characteristicof the clergy; clerical. 3.ReverendAbbr. Rev. Used as a title and form of address for certain clerics in many Christian churches. NOUN: Informal 4.A cleric or minister. Used with the. ETYMOLOGY: Middle English, from Old French, from Latin reverendus. If you noticed in definition # 2 it is a characteristic of a minister, a title and not a name. Not being a name is extremely important and being a characteristic or title is the key. Rom 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. I wish to look at Romans 13:4 a little closer, The words, “be afraid” and “a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.” Rom 13:5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. Rom 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Is Romans 13:4-6 speaking of a physical fear? No. Its speaking of a reverence fear as we fear God. So a “reverend, preacher, minister” is a man called and ordained, by God, to deliver the Gospel, to those that are lost and to those who are under his charge, to maintain the acceptable standard of conduct as a Christian according to the Commandments of Christ. His duty’s include, Preaching the word, being instant in season, out of season; reproveing, rebukeing, exhorting with all longsuffering and doctrine. By the Power delivered to him by God and Christ, who is the head of all things concerning the Church. 1Ti 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 1Ti 6:1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. Well what about other names for the clergy in Scripture? Stewards, Minister, Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists; Pastors, Teachers, Bishop, Elder and Deacon. The word,”trustee” is not in scripture but the word means; A member of a board elected or appointed to direct the funds and policy of an institution. Many a hypocritical Christian will overlook many a name if it suites them, but will not go against titles that are not listed in scripture. Why is that? Is it because they want attention or to cause division within the Church? They don’t come out against the title “lord”, why is that? And when you give them scripture or try to explain to them the meaning of a title or word, they close a deaf ear to you. The establishment of a trustee came about from the passage, Acts 6:3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. And the title “trustee” came from the word “Trust”. What about the word ,”lord” is it proper to call a minister or any one else lord? Yes, its acceptable with God. 1Pe 3:5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 1Pe 3:6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. But again we must look at the way the word “lord” is written. A small [L] not a capitol. What about the word “Priest”? Its OK. but not the title of “High Priest”, for we only have one High Priest which is Jesus Christ. Heb 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Heb 5:2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. Heb 5:3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. Heb 5:4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. But we must remember that this title is only given by God. “but he that is called of God” What about the word”Father?” No. Mat 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. What about the word,”Rabbi?” No. Mat 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. What about the word “cardinal?” Not in scripture. What about the word,”pope?” Not in scripture. Has many a Christian overemphised titles because of a lack of knowledge of Scripture? Are there thoses that are in need of reteaching? Are there those who have forgotten who they are in Christ, which come out with hateful remarks, not following after the teachings of Christ? I am saddened to say, Yes, there are. They have forgotten to read and study, they have forgotten about love and compassion, they have forgotten about comming together and reasoning one with another, they have forgotten who they are supposed to represent. I pray that this message comes forth as a learning experience so that all can remember who we are, Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus. ars.

Oh virginia he s real but not in the way you think

The famous reply by the New York Sun to young Virginia confirmed every child’s hopes – that Santa Claus is indeed real. Children use myriad ways to test their cherished belief in Santa. The logical realise that big fat Santa couldn’t possibly fit down the chimney, or visit everyone in a single night. Others catch on early because older siblings tease them about Santa. Some are sat down at age twelve and solemnly informed of the truth by parents concerned they will blurt out the ludicrous belief at school. Other kids summon the courage to ask a grownup, knowing that confirmation of their fears will set their belief in a magical Santa firmly in the past. Their initiation brings with it grief for lost certainty. Once Santa is exposed, there can be no more true magic, as the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy fall with him. As if to compensate, a dawning awareness of the significance of giving starts to grow when the magic is blown away. Most of us as adults don’t believe in the supernatural events in the Christmas story any more than we believe in Santa. The virgin birth, the prophesies, the stable, the singing angels, the wandering star, the three wise men are all viewed by most as nice elements in a fairy tale and promptly cast aside. Although these stories were never meant to be taken literally, churches continue to repeat the story without explanation, making it difficult for people to take the churches’ message seriously. Theologians such as John Shelby Spong are popularising the idea of considering God in a different way. The God most of us are used to is somewhat temperamental, vacillating between warlord and do-gooder. Nick Cave said it for many in song – ‘I don’t believe in an interventionist God’. But churches lead centuries-old prayer seeking God’s intervention among the nations, the community, the sick, the poor and the dead. Overwhelmingly, God has been portrayed as a magician in the sky, whom we must please in order to access his benevolent side. Miracles such as healing, producing food for 5,000 people out of a couple of loaves and fishes and walking on water are still presented by churches as literal, or at best explainable, facts. Spong, however, suggests that if we read the Bible chronologically we realise that the supernatural events and ancient Hebrew symbolism were layered on by writer after writer as the first century wore on. The earliest writings (of Paul) contained no reference to supernatural events or virgin birth. The addition of supernatural events is suggested to be a response to the overwhelming transformation brought about by the adult Jesus. Words failed the writers, who could only resort to over-the-top impressions such as ‘the heavens rejoiced at his birth’. Spong’s proposals follow the work of theologians such as Robinson, Bonhoeffer, Barth and Tillich. Tillich claimed that God could not be defined personally as a being, but should be considered non-personally as the Ground of All Being. If Spong is right, what does this mean for people brought up to believe in the miracles, the virgin birth, the resurrection and ascension? The angels, the wise men, the star? Spong’s own grappling with the implications of viewing God differently was ‘both an exhilarating and a fearful experience,’ much like the child who dares to question Santa. Most of us uncover Santa at an early age, realising the North Pole, the elves, the chimney, the reindeer, and frequent sightings at shopping malls don’t quite match our experience of a physical world. For some children it is an exhilarating initiation, albeit tinged with lament for the beliefs one leaves behind. Yet when the magic is stripped from Santa, the child comes closer to understanding generosity. When we peel away the magical layers on God, we enter a journey into a deeper discovery of Jesus. This is a more authentic experience that doesn’t contradict what we know, but rather reaffirms what our souls know of the universe.

    Old earth belief

Have you ever been to a church that claimed that the earth is young? Have you ever felt pressured into believing in a young earth, even though you felt the scientific evidence was contrary to a young earth? Have you ever thought that in order to be a Christian, you had to deny science, and believe in a young earth? You are not alone. Many churches preach that the earth is young, and many require you to profess this belief through their statement of faith, which includes a world that was created in six 24-hour days. No, you are definitely not alone...millions have been driven away from the church, and Christ, because of this very topic. However, there is no need for this to happen. Yes, you can believe in an old earth, and become a Christian. Yes, the Word of God is without error, and its account of the creation story in Genesis is perfectly in line with the scientific record. The doctrine of salvation has nothing to do with the age of the earth. The Bible does not say, “Believe in a young earth, or be condemned to hell.” You can become a Christian and believe in an old earth. Want to learn more? This website is here to help you. Let's start with a basic explanation of old-earth theology. There are several major positions one can take with regards to the old age of the earth and creation. With each position, you can believe in an inerrant Bible and a literal interpretation of Genesis. They are: 1. Progressive Creationism. In this theory, each day of creation is equated to a long period of time, and represents a specific portion of God's creative work which may overlap the other days of creation. Even though Progressive Creationists believe in an old earth, they do not believe in evolution, but rather that each species was created a unique creation, from nothing, without evolving from an earlier species. 2. Theistic Evolution. Similar to Progressive Creationism, but with the added belief in evolution. Theistic evolution states that God used evolution to develop the species on our planet, including man. This can be broken down further...some believe that God created the first life form, then sat back and let it evolve on its own, while others believe that God was active in shaping the evolution of life throughout earth history. 3. The Gap Theory. This theory proposes that there was a ‘gap’ of time, of billions of years, between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. This theory claims that the earth of old somehow became ruined (some blame Satan and his fallen angels), and was later repaired by God as described during the six 24-hour days of creation. This theory became popular after being included in the Scofield Reference Bible in 1945, and many still hold to it. Another popular term you may have heard recently is "Intelligent Design," or ID. You can find themes of intelligent design in both old and young-earth theory. The basic premise is that the universe and our world shows overwhelming evidence that it was designed by some higher being, and could not have happened by chance. Thus, the main target of ID personalities is the evolutionist. It should not be considered a separate form of belief...if you believe in a creator, then obviously you believe in ID. Does it matter which position you believe in? No, it doesn’t. The doctrine of salvation through Jesus Christ is not affected by the age of the earth, nor the methods God used to create the earth. Some people mix and match these theories. For instance, a Gap Theory believer may believe in evolution during the billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. In an informal poll on this website, with over 1,100 respondents who believe in an old earth, 45 percent are Progressive Creationists, 32 percent are Theistic Evolutionists, 10 percent believe in the Gap Theory, and the rest are old earth, but undecided as to which position to believe in. If this information has intrigued you, feel free to check out more of this website. If you feel trapped by years of young-earth belief, when you know that science does not support a young earth, then you are in the right place. We take young-earth arguments and show their faults, exposing them for being false science and bad theology. There is no need to worry any more about the age of the earth...you can be a Christian and believe in an old earth. The Word "Day" The first thing you should come to grips with is the concept of "time" in the creation account. It all revolves around this question: How long the "days" of Genesis 1? Young-earth creationists have written many thousands of pages of material, arguing that you can only interpret the Hebrew as a 24-hour day. Our argument here is much simpler, and will only take a few sentences. How long is a day in Genesis Chapter 1? Consider this…the Bible says a day to the Lord is as a thousand years to man (II Peter 3:8). Remember, Adam was created on the sixth day, and these “days” were as God sees days, because only God was here…not man. Man was only here at the very end of the sixth day. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how I interpret the word day in human languages…the question is, ‘What is a day to God?’ Think about this…if you are in the middle of space, and you are the all-powerful, all-knowing, eternal God of the universe, who never sleeps, then what is a “day” to you? If you are eternal, what meaning does time have for you? Wow, there goes another million years! It won’t matter because you have billions more! If you are convinced that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, and you are convinced the world was created, and did not happen by chance, then you must come to the conclusion that a day for God is a long period of time. God gives us the term day so that limited, finite man can better understand the creation story. Is this against the Hebrew use of the word translated Day ("Yom") in Genesis as the young earth proponents claim? Not at all. Yes, you can argue for a literal 24-hour day, but it is just as easy to find Hebrew scholars who believe in an old earth, and say that "day" is a long period of time. So, as a believer, it is up to you to decide who is right. Consider the use of the word "Yom" by Moses. In the Genesis creation account and in Psalm 90 (written by Moses), it is used four different ways! 1. 12-Hour Period. In Genesis 1:5, it says "God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day." This use of "Yom" is for a 12-hour period. 2. 24-Hour Period. In Genesis 1:14, it says "And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years,…”. This use of "Yom" is for a 24-hour day. 3. The Entire Creative Week. In Genesis 2:4, it says "This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens." Here, "Yom" refers to the entire six-day creative week. 4. A Long Period of Time. Psalm 90:4 says, "For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night." In this instance, Moses says "Yom" is like a thousand years. In each case, it is the same author, Moses, who uses the word "Yom" to represent a different period of time. Thus, young earth creationist claims that "Yom" is only a 24-hour day are completely unfounded by Scripture. For more, see Word Study: Yom on the Answers In Creation website, located at answersincreation. org/word_study_yom. htm If you are convinced, and you have ignored Christianity because of this conflict of the length of creation, then you should know that salvation in Jesus Christ is just a prayer away. Still skeptical…still can’t overcome the arguments against an old earth by all those young-earth creationists? There are many people who can help you find answers. The Answers In Creation website was designed to provide answers to false young earth claims (see link below). Their articles will provide answers to the misleading claims made by young-earth creationists. You may also find a further explanation of old-earth belief in books and through other web sites on their links page. May God bless you as you seek the truth. FOOTNOTE: The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (1980, Moody Press) says of Yom: "It can denote: 1. the period of light (as contrasted with the period of darkness), 2. the period of twenty-four hours, 3. a general vague "time," 4. a point of time, 5. a year (in the plural; I Sam 27:7; Ex 13:10, etc.)." Old earth creationist relationships

As old-earth creationists, what should our relationship be with the young-earth creationist? Can we get along together, in the same churches, without arguing? As you can imagine, a lot of the email that Answers In Creation receives is from the young-earth person who takes issue with our position. They range from sincere to hostile; some “agreeing to disagree,” others flat out demanding that we delete the website. What should be the old-earth response to these demands? Despite such negative reactions from young earth creationists, it is not only possible…it is imperative that we get along. We should be able to sit right beside each other in church and worship God together. We should “agree to disagree,” and have healthy discussions about our Creator. The First Step Our starting point for both old and young earth believers should always be one of humility and charity. The first step should always be prayer. Not only do I pray for the continued success of young-earth ministries, but I urge all my fellow old-earth believers to do the same. I don’t pray that people convert from young-earth belief to old-earth belief…that is not the purpose of Answers In Creation. Why? Because of my next section below (Fundamental Doctrines). What do I pray for? When I pray, I pray that non-Christians would get the message that the young-earth ministries cannot preach… that it’s OK to be a Christian and believe in an old earth, with or without evolution… with or without a “Gap” between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. Fortunately these prayers are answered. In February 2006, over 12,000 people visited AIC. Over 500 of these visitors read the page describing old earth belief, claiming it is possible to be a Christian and believe in an old earth. Over 280 people read our Salvation page. The message is getting out there to the people that have been alienated by the “young-earth only” message that many churches proclaim. Fundamental Doctrines Second, as long as the fundamentals of the faith are not changed, we should be at liberty to disagree, but with an air of civility. Answers in Creation has taken this a step further, not only claiming that it is OK to believe in an old earth, but also claiming that it is OK to believe in a young earth. Why? Because when it comes to the fundamental doctrines (see footnote), especially salvation, there is no impact. We have taken this position because in the long run, we all get to heaven, so it doesn’t matter if you believe in young or old. There is no point in trying to convert a young-earth believer to old-earth belief (of course, there’s nothing wrong in having “healthy discussions” with people of the opposing viewpoint). Our main message is that of salvation in Jesus Christ, not salvation in the creation. Why Answers In Creation? If that’s the case, then you may ask why Answers In Creation even exists. It exists to provide outreach to the many people who are convinced that the earth is old. For years, they have been told by young-earth creationists that they are wrong, and thus have been alienated from the church. In providing this website, we are saying to them, “You are right, the earth is old…here’s the answers to the claims of young-earth creationists, which directly attack your old-earth belief.” We cater to all old-earth beliefs, from progressive creationism, to the gap theory, to theistic evolution. An attack upon the validity of the Big Bang theory by young-earth ministries, is an attack upon progressive creationists. An attack upon the validity of evolution by young-earth ministries, is an attack upon old-earth theistic evolutionists. The young-earth claim that dinosaurs only lived 6,000 years ago, is an attack upon all old-earth creationists. All these attacks against the old-earth position need to be met head-on. Although Answers in Creation is mainly a progressive creationist website, we uphold the old-earth believer's right to believe in any theory they choose. We do not seek to destroy young-earth belief, but rather to provide a fair and balanced look at the issues. In doing so, many have claimed that this “mud-slinging” is unnecessary and divides the body of Christ. This depends on your attitude. As a creationist, it is your choice how you respond to opposing viewpoints. If you correctly recognize that both forms of creationist belief are acceptable, and the Bible can correctly be interpreted to support either viewpoint, then this is not mud-slinging, but healthy discussion. On the other hand, if a person is close-minded, and refuses to recognize old-earth belief as a viable alternative to young-earth belief, then they would view this as mud-slinging. It’s your choice, based on your attitude. As an old-earth creationist, I prefer to view the negative articles on young-earth ministries, such as Answers In Genesis, the Institute for Creation Research, and Creation Science Evangelism, as “healthy discussion”, rather than mud-slinging. I could easily call their articles mud-slinging, but choose not to. It’s all about attitude, and how you choose to view it. Make it positive…whether you are old or young earth. Conclusion We at Answers In Creation say it’s OK to be a fully-energized Christian, no matter whether you believe in an old or young earth. In the same spirit of openness that Answers In Creation embodies, I encourage the young-earth ministries to make similar statements, saying that old-earth belief is acceptable for Christians, and to stop condemning old earth creationists as compromisers. Footnote: Unfortunately, many fundamentalist churches have added “creation” as a doctrine. Historically speaking, when you examine doctrines before the 20th century, creation was not considered a doctrine. In fact, most church denominations today do not have creation as a doctrine (for more, see the Denomination list at answersincreation. org/denomination. htm). For some reason, the leaders of the young-earth movement have “created” the additional Doctrine of Creation for their followers. Just like God’s creation, which was “Exhilo” or “out of nothing,” they have created this doctrine out of nothing.

Pass it on a rule for good bible interpretation

During the dark ages the scriptures were chained to pedestals in the major cathedrals of the world. The common people could not read the bible and even the clergy were limited to reading it only where it stood. Those days have been eliminated by the courageous efforts of clergy and reformers like Luther, Calvin, Tyndale and a host of others who in some cases gave their lives in the effort. We now enjoy the fruit of their labors throughout most of the free world. Not only are all the versions of the bible available here in America but one publisher has begun offering the bible bound and covered in your choice of designer colors! Yet for all of this profusion of bibles one of the flimsiest excuses for not reading or trusting the bible is still being used everywhere throughout the land. Who has not heard someone say, “The bible is open to interpretation and that’s why it can’t be trusted”? If honestly examined, this excuse will be found to be just another one of those “common wisdom of the day” utterances that has no more truth in it than water in the desert. It is grown out of ignorance, watered by indifference and harvested in laziness. It is used glibly but has dire consequences; in fact it could cost a person their entire future. The first rule of interpretation says that no one has the right to interpret the scripture in a merely personal or private way. …Knowing this first that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. I Peter 1:20 If the bible is not open to private interpretation then it must only be open to public interpretation. That is the key. The universal bible believing church the world over has an interpretation that qualifies this fact, the minor doctrinal differences and the trend toward liberalism notwithstanding. Whether Pentecostal, Evangelical, Baptist, Methodist or any other major historical denomination the bible is interpreted the same. Jesus death and resurrection is the key to salvation and his teachings are the key to our best behavior. When people stray very far from this kind of interpretation of the bible they are bordering on heresy, cultism or something worse. Another great rule of sound biblical interpretation is to let the bible interpret itself. Let the whole bible reflect on any part of it in particular. You will rarely ever go wrong by applying this rule. This of course implies that you would have to study the whole bible. That alone would just about eliminate any problem with bible interpretation you will ever encounter. An old preacher from Vermont once told me of a basic rule of interpretation he had learned while attending Bible College. I have never forgotten it and I’ve never failed to use it. He said, “If the scripture makes plain sense, seek no other sense”. Being complicated is not a prerequisite to being a bible student so don’t bury your self in hidden meanings and obscurities, just get on with what is known and apparent. Finally take a lesson from the smallest child. Ask them what Jesus meant when he said we should love each other, or that we should forgive others. They know what these things mean even when those who hide behind the idea that the bible is riddled with too many interpretations don’t. Some passages are simple but that does not mean they aren’t profound. Other passages are more complex but can be clearly understood by the simplest approach, much like that of a child. The child like approach to scriptural interpretation is the shortest route to understanding; in fact it is also the shortest route to salvation itself. Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. Mark 10:15 We must cease to view the bible as some deep manual of religion only to be known by the initiated or specially trained. Someone once said that the bible and more so, the New Testament is a letter from God the Father to his children. Who would think a letter from your father was meant to create confusion. It would speak of his love, his intentions, his ongoing plans and his final return home. It would give instructions and details on what to do until he returns. No one would throw a letter from their father in a corner and say I don’t understand any of that so I’ll just do what I want to until he returns home and take it up with him then. The words of the bible never create confusion. In fact it is the dismissing of these words that creates confusion. If we hide behind the worn out clichй about “it is all open to interpretation” we will find ourselves with no where to hide in the final day. Jesus said the very opposite about his words, He said they would illuminate our lives and bring peace to us, not confusion. In fact they would produce life itself within us…the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:33

Practical steps to obtaing bible healing

There are promises of healing throughout the Bible. There are also practical steps to obtain our healing. Three of these practical steps are found in the following scripture. Prov 3:7-8 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. (KJV) (1) Be not wise in your own eyes. (2) Fear the Lord. (3) Depart from evil. These three things produce “health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones.” These three things shall be health for us throughout our being. To our navel and to the marrow of our bones signifies a complete, thorough health. These three things must go together. Do not eliminate any one of them and depend on just the other two. Do not remove two of them and depend on just one of them. Obey these words to the fullest. Utilize all three steps. Then it shall be health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones. Then in the verse below, we find some encouraging words concerning our healing as it relates to our station in life. Jer 30:17 17 For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after. (KJV) Jeremiah 30:17 is one of the most faith-building Scripture in the entire Bible. It speaks of something that keeps professional counselors in business; it speaks of total rejection. It describes a people rejected to the point of being called Outcast. It speaks of the rejection of a people, so thorough and final, that no one ever sought after them to find out what went so very wrong for them. In other words, God says to us that even if we are called Outcast by those around us, He will still heal us. Even if we dwell on the wrong side of the tracks, He will still heal us. He says to us here that no matter who we are, He will still heal us. He says to that no matter where we are from, He will still heal us. He says that no matter where we live, He will still heal us. We may be in such a state that “no man will ever seek after us.” No matter! He will still heal us. God says that He will restore our health to us. He also says that he will heal us of our wounds. Thanks be unto God! He gave us a healing Jesus.

    Prayer and life direction

Dear Daughter, In my last letter I shared some thoughts about how to give your life direction. I would like to continue those thoughts. There is another important factor that shapes our lives. That factor is our spirituality, or our relationship with God. If you pray and ask God to use you and your life for his purposes, your prayers will be answered, if you are sincere. This is a submission to God and a willingness to walk through opened doors, or opportunities, to serve God and others. If you pray this prayer, it’s a good idea to also pray for the wisdom and insight to recognize when a door opens for you. Prayer is real. God is real, as is the Holy Spirit and Jesus. It is easy to begin thinking that God and church are more of a social function than anything else. In fact, Church does serve as a social function and as a type of support group for Christians. We meet to encourage one another and to help each other grow. This is one of the purposes of church. These things are the “seen” part of church. Just as the “seen” is real, so is the “unseen.” Again, God is real. The Holy Spirit is real. Jesus was and is real. When you pray, your prayers are heard. I believe that prayers are sometimes said out of routine and without proper respect. Use your imagination as you read this. Suppose that you are allowed only one prayer in your lifetime. You decide that today is the day you will use this one prayer. You go to a private place for this prayer. Just as you bow your head, a bright flash of light, like lightening, fills the room. At first you are blinded by the flash, and then you realize that it wasn’t a flash at all. The unbelievably bright light continues to fill the room. Your heart pounds and you notice trembling in your arms and legs. Suddenly, the light becomes even more intense and you panic. As you turn to find the door, you hear a thunderous, powerful voice that is unusual; it sounds like three voices speaking in unison. It is a frightening and awesome sound. Then just as suddenly as it began, the powerful three voices come together as one. You hear and you understand: “Don’t be afraid my child, for I am your Heavenly Father and I love you very much. I knew you before you were born, I know you now and I will know and be with you when you leave this earth. I am here now to listen. I want to hear what you have to say. What you say is important to me because I love you more than you can understand.” How would you pray? Would your approach to the prayer be any different than usual? Prayer is powerful and real. Prayer is your direct hotline to God. In addition, when you pray, you are not praying alone. The Holy Spirit is helping with your prayer by communicating your deepest thoughts and needs, even the things that you don't know how to verbalize or pray for. Do you see why I say that prayer is powerful? Answered prayers shape and give direction to our lives. Prayer is powerful and prayers are answered. I suppose some people would have a different opinion on this, but it has been my experience that prayers are usually answered by the opening and closing of doors. An exception would be prayers for the seriously ill. I have talked with several people who have witnessed remarkable medical recoveries in response to sincere prayer. Again, my experience has been that prayers are often answered by a door closing in one direction and opening in another. On the surface, it can appear to be coincidental, chance, or good luck. However, as you go through life, remember what you are praying for and look backwards with 20/20 hindsight. You will find that there are just too many coincidental events. You will realize that God's hand was involved. I hope that you pray. When you pray, pray as if you are praying that once in a lifetime prayer. Remember that you have God’s attention and he wants to hear what you have to say. When you pray, don’t forget to praise God. This just means let God know that you recognize His greatness, that He is all-powerful, the one and only God, and that you love and praise Him. Also, don’t forget to thank God for all He has given you. Then, pray for other’s needs and your own needs. I hope that you ask God to help you get through the teenage years, to help you get through the dating years safely, and to eventually marry a godly man. You might also pray for God to use you for his purposes, which is what brought us to the topic of prayer to start with. So, I would suggest that our lives are directed and shaped by our choices, some random events, and God’s intervention in response to prayers. We can choose to drift through life and hope that things turn out all right, or we can choose to influence our direction in life through prayer and good choices. I hope you choose wisely and I hope that you pray. I will be praying for you.

    Prayer is the best thing

Prayer definitely works and is still working today as it did thousands of years ago. There are many that have experienced it's power. Just when you wonder when are things going to get better...prayer gets answered! And most of the time it will be better results than what you imagined! A powerful true experience of what prayer can do for those who have faith in it and in God. I was really getting to the point of utter frustration involving the numerous business ventures I had invested in over the last few years. One of my ventures was my own business as a real estate photographer and was just starting to market my service. Then the realtor companies were stating that real estate is booming and houses were selling without pictures and they were right, it was the beginning of a real estate boom…not what I wanted to hear! After many attempts at trying to get this business going with little success, I just broke down and prayed out loud to God telling him that evidently this isn’t the work that he had planned for me. And then I asked him to please show me what he would like for me to do. The next day, I was remembering that I had sold a certain product line in retail quite a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. So I thought what can I lose by just checking into it again? Then I called a friend that I hadn’t talked to for quite awhile and she was selling this line and was doing pretty well with it. After calling her, she said that she was retiring soon, and referred me to another lady in the business. I then spoke with her, and we really hit it off over the phone. I had never met her in my life, but she seemed very nice and helpful. All of a sudden, in the middle of the phone conversation, she said that sometime in the early part of next year, she will be retiring and has quite a few representatives that she makes commissions on, working for her. She then asked me if I would be interested in taking them over at that point. I wanted to shout out my answer, but managed to contain myself and said I was very interested. After the call had ended…I was dancing with joy! I thought this is so amazing, especially since she really didn’t even know me. Then that wasn’t all…this next part of my experience is even more amazing! My Christian friend and her husband whom I had originally called about this business, had put their house on the market so they could retire and travel. They had it up for less than two weeks and received a cash offer for the total amount they were asking…wow! Then guess what happened next…she called me and asked if I would take over her customer base of over fifty regular customers … WOW! Anyway, I think you know my answer. Then I thanked God for his blessing with his answer to my prayer! So in conclusion, if you are feeling like giving up, and have been really discouraged with your work or personal life, just ask God for his help. Then pray daily and give thanks to him too, have faith, and your prayers will be answered in the way that is best for you!

    Prevailing prayer

It was September 1957, four young men began to pray regularly in a little school near Kells, Ireland. They persevered and prevailed in prayer, so someone was converted in January the next year. Following that, there was about one conversion every week. Twelve months later they had a weekly gathering of around fifty people at their meeting, and around a hundred other small prayer groups had sprung up in the area! They held a service the next year, which attracted a huge crowd, so they poured out onto the street. People were convicted by the Holy Spirit, so much that some of them could not stand. Revival broke out, and every night there were gatherings. They prayed, praised, read the bible, and encouraged each other. They held meetings in everyday situations: kitchens, little barns, schools, fields, and even on sidewalks. They would pray and weep all night, and neglected their farm work so they could work for souls. How did it all start? God used four young Irish lads who prevailed in prayer. "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” – James 5:16 To promote a revival, we can use two things. One moves people, we can use the other to move God. We use truth to move men, and prayer to move God. We obviously can't tell God to do something, but we are changed in prayer, so God can move in us. It's a lot like how God always wants to forgive a sinner, but He can't forgive until the sinner's heart meets God's conditions. So when we pray, the change in us allows for God to answer. This is why we can't have a revival without prayer. The most exciting messages and truths alone will do nothing. Remember, words will never have any effect without the Holy Spirit. We must spend time in prayer, asking for Him to speak through the words and work in people's hearts. Without it, hearts harden, because they have "heard it all before”. "Prevail” means to triumph, win through, succeed or overcome. So prevailing prayer is prayer that persists and wins! This is one of the most important keys to a revival. We can't have a revival without prevailing prayer. Prevailing prayer isn't just a desire for something. It's prayer that gets what is seeks, it moves God and has impact. Looking at the story above is just a glimpse of the impact that prevailing prayer has. Whether we are commuting, working, or at home relaxing, we all have opportunities to pray. This is one of the best ways to use your life for God's glory: asking Him to move. Will you commit to learning to prevail in prayer?

Profession of pharmacy under siege by dr. kurt grady

There is a battle raging in the state of Illinois regarding the dispensing of medicines designed to induce abortions. Many pharmacists object to filling these prescriptions on moral and ethical grounds. Many see this as an infringement upon the doctor - patient relationship. However, Dr. Kurt Grady of the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International offers an alternative view. His article first appeared in the Official Journal of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International in the fall of 2005. He is one of the few that have spoken out in defense of pharmacists, and some in the pro-life movement consider this too hot to handle. However, I interviewed Dr. Grady regarding this issue and have included his thoughts in this article. Now, Dr. Grady: "We are indeed all familiar with the battle that has been raging in our profession regarding pharmacists refusing to dispense drugs for abortion. Recently, our brethren at the American Medical Association (AMA) have joined in the fray by approving a new policy to encourage States to allow physicians to dispense medications when there is no pharmacist nearby (within a 30-mile radius) willing to do so. The AMA asserts large numbers of pharmacists are refusing to fill prescriptions for contraceptives and abortifacients. Some pharmacists, according to AMA delegates, are also refusing to dispense psychotropic and pain medications. In addition, the policy-making body alleges pharmacists are refusing to return unfilled prescriptions to patients, thus preventing them from taking the prescriptions elsewhere, and they are "lecturing" patients about the drugs. While these accusations may sound extreme, I have no doubt there is at least a "grain" of truth therein. While I do not believe we have a right to confiscate legally written prescriptions, I do believe we have an obligation to counsel patients regarding the medications they are or are about to take. This is our professional duty and it is imputed upon us, so to speak, through our taking of the pharmacist's oath. As it may have been a few years since we studied the oath, I have included it below and have specifically related it to the issue of dispensing abortifacients further below. Oath of a Pharmacist: “At this time, I vow to devote my professional life to the service of all humankind through the profession of pharmacy. I will consider the welfare of humanity and relief of human suffering my primary concerns. I will apply my knowledge, experience, and skills to the best of my ability to assure optimal drug therapy outcomes for the patients I serve. I will keep abreast of developments and maintain professional competency in my profession of pharmacy. I will embrace and advocate change in the profession of pharmacy that improves patient care. I take these vows voluntarily with the full realization of responsibility with which I am entrusted by the public.” The recent issues addressed by the AMA, particularly those related to our refusal to fill prescriptions specifically designed to end a human life, go to the very heart of the pro-life moral position. As Christians, we view the beginning of life as the moment of conception. It is that miracle moment, which science cannot completely describe, where God fashions a human soul with a divine purpose. Jeremiah 1:5 illustrates the beauty of God's authorship of mankind as God speaks of His Sovereign purposes. Luke 1:41-44 shows that the purposes of God begin prior to birth as John's first act as the forerunner of Jesus was to leap in his mother's womb when the as-yet unborn Lord approached. God indeed has a purpose for all from even before the time of conception. Thus, we look at our oath in perhaps a different light than others. Our view is a biblical worldview. Consider our oath sentence by sentence: 1. "At this time, I vow to devote my professional life to the service of all humankind through the profession of pharmacy." All humankind includes those who are not yet born because life begins at conception. As a pharmacist I must consider an unborn baby as a patient. 2. "I will consider the welfare of humanity and relief of human suffering my primary concerns." Ending a human life does not consider his/her welfare and actually increases human suffering as many who have undergone abortions suffer physically and emotionally for years. (See Johnson T. Christianity and Pharmacy 2005;8 (l):21-22). Additionally, there is blessing in suffering, though that is yet another topic...see Romans 8:28-39. 3. "I will apply my knowledge, experience, and skills to the best of my ability to assure optimal drug therapy outcomes for the patients I serve." Ending his/her life is not and "optimal drug therapy outcome" for my patient. 4. "I will keep abreast of developments and maintain professional competency in my profession of pharmacy." Not all developments in medicine or pharmacy are positive according to a biblical worldview. God allows discovery through general revelation, yet how we apply that discovery determines its usefulness. There is no room for pragmatism in a biblical worldview. 5. "I will embrace and advocate change in the profession of pharmacy that improves patient care. Is this not the mission of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI)? What could improve patient care more than their coming to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? 6. "I take these vows voluntarily with the full realization of responsibility with which I am entrusted by the public." Yes, our profession's view from the public eye is important. However, I am infinitely more concerned about serving my Lord. He is my first concern, followed by my wife, children, other family members... and somewhere down that list is the public's view of my profession. As such, I will adhere to His Word and the principles contained therein to guide all of my earthly relationships, including my professional conduct. As a resident of the State of Illinois (though a pharmacist in Missouri), I was deeply concerned over a recent decision by our State's Governor, Rod Blagojevich-D, to force pharmacists to dispense emergency contraception, specifically, Plan B. In response to complaints by two women in Chicago who had been denied prescriptions for Plan B, Blagojevich signed an executive order ordering pharmacies and pharmacists to make the medication available. The rationale was if a pharmacy carried traditional oral contraceptives for preventing pregnancy, that pharmacy must carry all the agents in that category, including drugs not intended for prevention of pregnancy, but for abortion. Likewise, in a pharmacy carrying those medications, the pharmacist must dispense any medication in the category, including Plan B, "without delay". Herein, we have a situation where the government has: 1. Singled out a particular medical profession, pharmacy, 2. Eliminated its member's ability choose what their pharmacies will stock, and 3. Eliminated a pharmacist's ability refuse to fill a prescription based on moral convictions. In response, Luke Vander Bleek, a Roman Catholic pharmacist in Northwestern Illinois, has filed suit challenging the order on the basis that it violates Illinois' "conscience" law. The conscience law gives health care practitioners the ability to refuse to perform certain procedures based on their moral objections. Vander Block asserts the conscience law gives him the right to refuse to carry or dispense Plan B. This is an important test case for our profession as well as the entire nation because Illinois' conscience law is quite strong. The case is likely to be lengthy and may be subject to numerous appeals due its potentially broad reaching implications. We plan to carry a detailed interview with Vander Bleek in an upcoming issue of the Journal. More immediately, we all need to remain vigilant and rooted in our convictions. Prior to joining my current organization, I made it clear to both the district and pharmacy managers that I would not dispense Plan B. Just this week, I was involved in an emotionally charged discussion with another pharmacist and a pharmacy student—both of whom know that I am a Christian. They invoked the pharmacist's oath as a reason for me to dispense Plan B, which we do not even carry. I argued that the oath is intended to protect human life, not end it, and that since life begins at conception, I could not, in good conscience, dispense the medication. The pharmacist asked me if I would adopt the child whose life I would not end. I responded that if I could prevent the death of a child by my own hand, I would certainly adopt the child. Interestingly, he had nothing more to say." Note: At the CPFI annual meeting, the Board of Directors approved a Conscience Clause that can be found on the CPFI website under "About us" and "Beliefs" at the bottom of the web page ( cpfi. org).

    Psalm 104 the creation psalm

The 104th Psalm has long been known as the "Creation Psalm." This psalm presents a poem about the creation of the world, and it contains several key passages that contains clues about key topics related to the creation, such as the flood, death before the fall of man, and the age of the earth. First, let us establish a basis for the fundamentalist, young earth view of this passage. The Liberty Bible Commentary, produced by Jerry Falwell, states that the theme of this Psalm is "A poet's version of the creation chapters of Genesis." For the remainder of this article, the Liberty Bible Commentary will be referred to as the LBC.1 Second, consider the venerable commentary by Matthew Henry. Though no theme is given, it is clear that creation is the main theme. Hereafter Matthew Henry's Commentary will be referred to as MH. We will follow the standard divisions set by MH.2 Verses 1-4, The Splendour of His Majesty in the Upper World Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, thou art very great! Thou art clothed with honor and majesty, who coverest thyself with light as with a garment, who hast stretched out the heavens like a tent, who hast laid the beams of thy chambers on the waters, who makest the clouds thy chariot, who ridest on the wings of the wind, who makest the winds thy messengers, fire and flame thy ministers. The first four verses do not present anything significant for an old earth/young earth debate. It affirms that the topic is God, and his great majesty at the beginning of creation. Verses 5-9, The Creation of the Sea and the Dry Land Thou didst set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be shaken. Thou didst cover it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At thy rebuke they fled; at the sound of thy thunder they took to flight. The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place which thou didst appoint for them. Thou didst set a bound which they should not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth. This portion of scripture is the most important for the creation debate. That it is referring to Genesis Chapter One is agreed upon by MH and LBC. Verses 5 and 6 detail the waters which covered the globe (Genesis 1:2, 9). LBC states for verse 7, "the waters shifted into the places established by God (Gen. 1:9)." MH also refers back to Gen 1:9. Some young earth creationists have referred to this passage as proof of the Genesis Flood. Mr. Kent Hovind claims that "The large mountains, as we have them today, did not exist until after the Flood when "the mountains arose and the valleys sank down" (Ps. 104:5-9, Gen. 8:3-8)."3 It is clear however that this passage refers to Genesis 1, not to the post-flood world. Ken Ham, in Chapter 12 of his Answers Book, uses this argument to explain away the problem of the waters of the flood. However, it is an invalid argument when considering that Psalm 104 refers to the creation, and not the Flood.4,5 And finally, geologist Andrew Snelling uses it in his article on cave formation, with the same false premise.6 The most interesting conclusion we can make with this passage is that it invalidates the possibility of a worldwide flood. God sets a boundary that the waters may not pass over (verse 9). If you believe the Flood was global, then you must conclude that either God was unable to maintain this boundary, or that He went back on His word. MH states that "the waters are forbidden to pass over the limits set them; they may not, and therefore they do not, turn again to cover the earth."7 LBC states "Except for the Great Deluge, which for the purpose of his poetry is excluded by the poet, God had set a bound for the waters that they may not pass over."8 LBC accepts that the passage is for Genesis 1, but argues for an exception. There is no evidence, nor compelling reason, to suspect that the poet did not mean what he said. If he (God) had intended to exclude the Flood, He would not have made this statement. Either God lied by flooding the world, or it was a local flood event. If you believe in a young earth with a global flood, you must believe that God lied in Psalm 104:9. Verses 10-18, The Provision He makes for the maintenance of all the creatures according to their nature Thou makest springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills, they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild asses quench their thirst. By them the birds of the air have their habitation; they sing among the branches. From thy lofty abode thou waterest the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy work. Thou dost cause the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth, and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread to strengthen man's heart. The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly, the cedars of Lebanon which he planted. In them the birds build their nests; the stork has her home in the fir trees. The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the badgers. God provides for his creatures, creating grass for cattle, plants for man, and wine for man. Both old and young earth have no problems with this passage. Verses 19-24, The Regular Course of the Sun and Moon Thou hast made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. Thou makest darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep forth. The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God. When the sun rises, they get them away and lie down in their dens. Man goes forth to his work and to his labor until the evening. O LORD, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy creatures. It is interesting that this entire Chapter is referring to Genesis 1, yet we have in verse 21 young lions seeking their prey. Young earth theory does not believe in death, even animal death before the fall, yet here we have a clear case of carnivorous activity in Genesis 1, before the fall of man. LBC and MH make no arguments against this carnivorous activity. But wait...there's even clearer evidence of this a few verses later. Verses 25-26, The Furniture of the Sea Yonder is the sea, great and wide, which teems with things innumerable, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan which thou didst form to sport in it. Leviathan is referring to whales according to LBC. MH makes no mention of Leviathan. Verses 27-30, God's Sovereignty over the Creatures These all look to thee, to give them their food in due season. When thou givest to them, they gather it up; when thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good things. When thou hidest thy face, they are dismayed; when thou takest away their breath, they die and return to their dust. When thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; and thou renewest the face of the ground. Here we depart somewhat from MH's divisions. Here we have an even clearer case for carnivorous activity. It is clear that God provides food for His creatures. It is also clear that His creatures die. But most compelling is verse 30, where God creates them, and renews the ground. God's creative acts ended at the end of Day 6, with the creation of man. Thus, here we have God creating animals AFTER previous animals had died and returned to dust! The renewing of the ground is a clear indication of the renewing nature of God's creation, i. e. the food chain. As animals die, they decay and feed the plants, which in turn are eaten by plant-eating animals, who in turn are eaten by meat-eating animals, and the process starts all over. God's self-renewing creation is perfect for a system which maintains itself, and is indeed "very good" as God states in Genesis 1:31. LBC does not address this conflict with their own young earth theory. They denounce evolution, but fail to address this death before the fall. Verses 31-35, Closing May the glory of the LORD endure for ever, may the LORD rejoice in his works, who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke! I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD. Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! Bless the LORD, O my soul! Praise the LORD! The closing presents no information for the age debate. Conclusion It is clear from this passage that Noah's Flood had to be local, and that there was animal death prior to the fall of man, thus contradicting the young-earth interpretation of the creation. This passage fits well with an old-earth interpretation, and provides no challenges against old earth belief. Psychology as religion the cult of self worship by paul c. vitz

It seems everyone you meet these days is a self-proclaimed psychologist. From radio talk shows, television interviews, romance novels, weekly magazines, to cliques at work; everybody has an opinion on the latest “mental illness.” I was first introduced to practical psychology when I joined the United States Air Force in 1970. It was expected that Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) would become counselors to their subordinates. Profession military education devoted entire chapters and lectures on non-directive or eclectic counseling techniques. Maslow's hierarchy of needs was drilled into our heads. We were sternly warned to avoid any mention of religion, but instead to make ample use of psychological techniques. Paul Vitz in his book “Psychology as Religion” attempts to expose psychology for what it really is, i. e., religion. He begins by giving the reader a brief biography on the fathers of the modern psychology movement along with some of their theories. The opening chapter was dry reading but I suppose necessary as a historical backdrop. My interest peaked when I immediately recognized Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow since I was forced to study them for 26 years while in the military. Vitz also discusses Carl Jung, Erich Fromn, and Rollo May as being significant contributors to the movement. Vitz quickly transitions into explaining the concept of self-esteem which he promotes as the center of the entire selfism movement. This became important to me as it seems no matter where you turn, a lack of or poor self-esteem appears to be the cause of every ill known to mankind. For a movement to be so widespread to the point where psychology has been woven into the gospel message, Vitz says that the self-esteem concept has “no clear intellectual origins.” That’s a surprising claim considering the impact selfism has had on academia and the practice of counseling. Vitz states that self-esteem should be understood as an emotional response and not a cause. He says it is a reaction to what we have done and what others have done to us. High self-esteem is a desirable feeling to have (like happiness), but the feeling itself isn’t the cause of anything. In trying to obtain a feeling of self-esteem, the only successful way is to do good to others or accomplish something. In so doing, you’ll get all the self-esteem you want. However, the downside is people begin to pursue happiness as a far greater goal than the goal of obtaining personal holiness. Not only is selfism a self-defeating goal for the Christian, Vitz goes on to make the case that it is also simply bad science and a warped philosophy. The little clinical evidence that does exist is mostly based on empirical observations and doesn’t stand the test of solid scientific problem solving. He exposes flaws in each step of the process, from stating the problem, forming and testing the hypothesis, to testing the conclusion. He also identifies several philosophical contradictions and in some cases, actual misrepresentations. The spread of this bad science and faulty philosophy is believed by the author to have contributed to the destruction of families. Additionally, the entire recovery group mentality convinces the person with “low self-esteem” that their ills are due to trauma inflicted on them in the past. Recovery group therapy strokes the patient with self-pity thereby convincing the clients are victims. Once labeled, the “victim” now assumes the attitude of victimhood. Values clarification has become the model taught in schools and begins with the assumption that man is naturally good. Since the developers of values clarification reject moral teachings, Vitz claims that if responsible adults, i. e., teachers, don’t promote good values then someone else will. Providing a permissive environment supposedly nourishes the child by granting satisfaction for the child’s desires and interests. However, this philosophy is bankrupt because kids will assume the values of irresponsible sources in lieu of responsible ones. This combined with the aforementioned teachings has produced a society of victims where everyone is pointing to blame someone else for their misfortunes. Vitz takes three chapters to present a Christian analysis and criticism of humanistic self-theories. He gives the credit to our educational system for the transformation of our society into a culture of pure selfism. He notes that the New Age movement has many founders, but Abraham Maslow’s theories have been the most influential. Vitz argues his Christian critique within a historical framework and the impact it has had on the evolution of our society. Unfortunately he gives scant attention to biblical references for his position, but does show how the selfism heresy affects teachings on depression, idolatry, and suffering. He closes his work with the observation, "never have so many people been so self-conscious, so aware of the self as something to be expressed...., the self has become an object to itself." (I think this may make the case that self-esteem has become a new barometric indicator to the question everyone asks, "How are you doing today?") Overall, Vitz's book uses a cerebral approach in attempting to prove that self-worship is simply a religion. Biblical counselors looking for material to help their counselees break free of a selfish worldview of life will be disappointed. Then again, Vitz didn't write his book for that purpose. Moreover, he provides a wealth of information and a refreshing argument against those who say, "You can't teach religion in public schools." This leaves the reader with an irony: it's not a question of should we or should we not teach religion in public schools, but instead, what religion will we teach; selfism or Christianity?
