Are profitable, top search ranks possible without the help of an experienced search engine optimization company? Can a software package or online miracle site touting testimonials and grandeur guarantees of success elevate your online presence enough to really increase sales? Unfortunately, unless the software or miracle website were able to research your market, find hidden niches within it, author intriguing, creative, relevant and keyword laden content, house it in a framework that meshes precisely with that content, dissect and analyze your ranking competition and apply that statistical data within the afore mentioned tasks, you'll be using that money back guarantee. The same goes of number one rank promises for a keyword for $49. Now I'm not suggesting a claim like that is bogus or false advertising. But, ask if that keyword or phrase has actually had more than one search somewhere in the world in the past month. Or to shake them, insist your keyword phrase they must bring to the number one spot is "online casino. IS THERE INEXPENSIVE HELP THAT WORKS? Is there a working alternative for smaller businesses and sites that can't budget pro SEO right now? There are techniques that would give your site a chance of rising higher in the ranks. You'll find countless articles and instructions online and in bookstores about general things you can do to your site to improve its online presence. While helpful and usually accurate, blindly applying techniques to your site without some further knowledge of your own site, your competition, and your online market will hinder your efforts. With some real world, current analysis of YOUR individual situation at your disposal, you can greatly improve your efforts with even the smallest copy, title or content adjustment. It is going to require some work on your part, no matter what do-it-yourself tactics you employ. HOWEVER, there are tools and analysis reports available to you that can give you a towering leap for the do-it-yourselfer. Some plain English comparisons of your page vs. the top 10 ranking pages in a particular engine for a particular keyword phrase will define dozens of parameters to begin your do – it – yourself optimization. How many links do you need, are there better keywords you should choose, and then what do you do with all this information once you have it? Comparisons and analysis of your site and your competitors are usually presented in an easy to understand format and reveal patterns and collected intelligence that can help you re-write and revise your content and page layout and begin your SEO efforts a lap ahead of everyone else. SET REALISTIC GOALS You must remember, legitimate, professional search engine optimizers are immersed in their field and are educated with experience. The time, knowledge, talent and effort that you get with a pro is worth every penny. A professional SEO's approach involves research of your market, competition and many times a significant renovation of your existing site from code to content. The in-depth detail and deep analysis, content development, link and page structure requires a significant amount of time, experience, and a lot of hand work. In other words, if you want to feel better and improve your self image, you don't have to pay a doctor to tell you that eating healthy, taking a vitamin and regular exercise will make a marked improvement in your well being. If you want the large scale, lasting and radical change a facelift can give you, you must pay a plastic surgeon for his education, experience and talent. Don't forget to use some common sense when looking at your market. If you think you're going to rank for a highly competitive keyword that has several well known companies at the top without the aid of a professional, you'll probably end up disheartened. Achieving first page ranks for competitive keywords in a saturated market is a mammoth task, and at the very least would require a full time effort by an experienced firm with resources to take on such a challenge. Don't be discouraged; with some brainstorming you can think of some related, less competitive keywords and niche markets to target. HOW A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE CAN GO A LONG WAY Some very simple copy adjustments in the right place can go a long way on less competitive sites. Let's look at a few easy changes anyone can make. Page Titles The page title, the words that display in the top of your web window, is one of the most crucial elements on the page as far as the search engines go. When you do a search for something what do you type in the search field? Unless it's a company's specific name, you type in a keyword or key phrase like "men’s cross training air sneakers". A very common mistake is to put your company name in the page title. Sometimes it's appropriate, but for ranking purposes, uses a concise description of your page with a prime keyword from that page. Bonus Hint - Start your first sentence with that same keyword! Content Quality You'll surely find as many opinions about content as there are about politics. Take away the extremes and you'll find the meat is the same. To increase your rank, you have to have searchable content, and it must be quality. What is quality? More importantly, what do the search engines think is quality? The answers depend on your site and position on the internet. However, all quality content shares some characteristics. It's useful information about your products or service. Don't throw random free, generic, carbon copied stuff from the web onto your site. Use some thought and creativity. Build copy around different aspects of your target. LOOK FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE If you have a site about restoring classic cars, make a page about the evolution of headlights over the decades. Add another page about how and where to find hard to find classic parts. Content should be: Easy to follow - and well written for a human reader, not a search engine. Unique - write it yourself or hire a writer. Varied - Don't fill your page with the same keyword repeatedly or you risk being considered spam. Examine the keyword densities of your keyword in the top 10 listings it returns in a particular engine. Stay within that number. Take a few more evenings or weekends and improve your ranks by doing some research and digging, and applying that invaluable knowledge strategically to your web site. KINDS OF SEO RESEARCH you can do to win There are SEO companies online who offer various reports that can save you a lot of the legwork. Even the simplest of tasks can be too time consuming when you need to focus on editing your pages. For example, finding your current rank, if any, in all of the major engines for all of the keywords you want to rank could take a day on your own. Some other types of reports available are: Keyword Research - A list of keywords you or I might make sitting down with a pencil and paper is a good start. The important word here is "start". That list is dozens of revisions away from completion. It will expand and contract many times as further information is gathered. Are your words focused and targeted enough so you'll attract qualified leads? Are there related words and phrases that you haven't thought of? What words does your competition have throughout their pages? And most importantly, are the words you've chosen actually being typed into search engines? You can find many different levels of keyword services from simple analysis of your existing pages to research and development of an entire list ready for use in your pages, Adwords or PPC campaigns. Competition Research - Who is ranking now? Who is in the positions where you want to be? Examine your competition's pages with a microscope. An Understanding of those you want to outrank gives you a working outline to revise your own. (Do NOT copy their content.) Focus on trends, keywords, densities, titles, page elements… their pages, structures and their links. On Page Optimization - A report like this analyzes the words in the elements on your page like titles and boldface or headings as well as your body copy, and link text. It also tells you information about keyword density. Earlier I mentioned that using a keyword too many times on a page could be considered spam. An analysis like this will show how many times each word, word pairs and groups of words were used on a page and what percentage of all the words they are. A report on a high ranking competitor's site will give you some insight into a page that is successfully ranking for keywords you want. Off Page or Link Reports - As soon as you start learning about search engine optimization, you'll understand what a key role good quality links play in determining rank. These types of analysis will show who is linking to you, or even better, who is linking to a ranking competitor. You can get some ideas of sites to list with and an approximate number of links of a particular quality that you'll need to rank. TAKE SOME ACTION - a few well researched changes can give you a boost If ranking and online presence are crucial, then find a respected, recommended and experienced search engine optimization professional. The same logic that tells you to go to the doctor when aspirin doesn't do the job also applies to this situation. If budget is constricting, your keywords have little competition, or you'd like to improve your presence to the best it can be without employing a professional then you'd be surprised what a little knowledge and time can do for your ranking. Applying the same techniques every few weeks and keeping your site fresh will put you a level even higher above the rest. Remember, many variables and factors are considered and given varying weights by different engines to determine where you rank. A brand new site, no matter how optimized it is usually doesn't show any rank in Google until it miraculously appears about a year later. Older sites of more than a few years often take the top ranks for competitive words. Don't be discouraged. The simple SEO methods you read about online or in publications can give your site a stronger presence, but will achieve far better results for you if you employ some smaller, budget based intelligence and research.

It's the timeless question: how do you get other sites to link to you? The most commonly discussed ways are reciprocal linking (swapping links) and buying links. Yet there's another important tool for building links that should be a part of your toolbox: distributing content in exchange for one-way inbound links. Comparison with Other Linking Methods • Reciprocal Linking: The big advantage of content distribution over swapping links is that the links built are one-way, and therefore presumably more valuable. Of course, reciprocal links still have value, but relying primarily on them might hamper your SEO efforts. • Indirect Reciprocal Links: I link my site A to your site, so you link your site to my site B. The problems are that this can be a lot of work, and also, Google can detect indirect links if you do it more than once with the same group of sites, which might make your linking arrangements look like a link farm. • Paid Links: The problem with paid links is 1) the costs add up; 2) search engines are getting better and better at discounting paid links. According to Matt Cutts' blog, "I wouldn't be surprised if search engines begin to take stronger action against link buying in the near future...link-selling sites can lose their ability to give reputation (e. g. PageRank and anchortext)." Kinds of Content to Distribute • Articles. This is the essential kind of content distribution, to the point that many people consider content distribution simple as "article marketing." However, you're missing out on a few other sources of links if you only do articles. • News blurbs. A lot of news-style sites will only reprint pieces of a couple of paragraphs. The good news is that often enough the whole point of these news blurbs is to include links to other sites, in a sort of "look what we've found" kind of way, a la Slashdot. org • Press Releases. There are some sites that aggressively reprint press releases. A press release is like an article, only in a very specific press release format, and frankly that's not that enjoyable to read. I don't know why some sites are so head-over-heels over press releases, but, hey, that's their business. The good news is that even if you can't write and don't want to hire a writer, press releases (at least basic ones) are pretty easy to do. • Tools, games and other webware. Sites with popular tools, software, Flash games and other webware often let other sites use it in exchange for a link. The big potential downside is technical support. • Images. Images, especially charts and photographs, are important forms of content on the web. If you have great images on your site and people ask you to use them on their sites, require a backlink in exchange. The problem with images is that they are so easily stolen. Stolen words can be uncovered with a web search. You could try to watermark images with a copyright symbol, URL, and the link requirement. But in the process you'd make the image much less desirable. • Web design templates. These have been freely distributed for a long time. Yet they are even more easily stolen than images. Also, if you embed a link in the footer of a web template, what you'll get back are sitewide links, which are often thought to be filtered out in search engines. Maximizing Content Distribution Links' Effectiveness: Anchor Text Anchor text. You need optimized anchor text to rank high for any competitive keyword. That means you need your target keyword in the anchor text, and very importantly, variants of the target keyword (too many links with the exact same anchor text may be filtered). The problem is that some sites by default don't let you choose the anchor text of the link to your site. So you need to: 1) look for sites that do reprint content with optimized anchor text; 2) specifically ask for your target anchor text to be used. Also, do keep in mind that a true natural linking structure will require you to have a number of links that are not anchor-text-optimized, typically with the URL as the anchor text. How to Find Sites Finding sites to submit content is the biggest challenge. You can start by asking around to any other webmasters you already have a relationship with. Next, web-search. The classic method is "submit article" + [keyword]. Most of the sites you find this way won't be good candidates, which is why this can be a bit labor-intensive. I use offshore labor for this step, as well as a program that will sort and store all the search results into a spreadsheet; otherwise it might not be worth it. Then again, the same would be true for finding reciprocal linking partners. Ethical Issues & Best Practices Golden rule: remember that there's a human being who has to approve your article for submission. • Read and adhere to all submission guidelines. • Avoid automation. There's almost always some detail of submission that requires a human eye: a multitude of html formatting requirements, changing site themes, etc. • Don't submit by email unless specifically instructed. Using a contact form prevents possible sp@m accusations. • Only approach websites that request content submissions. • Don't misrepresent reprint content as original. • Don't submit the same content too often. After about two hundred reprints, a lot of people will be seeing the same thing over and over again and possibly complaining. In short, as SEO gets more competitive, having more and more linking methods at your disposal gets more and more important. Don't overlook this important tool.
Summary: Are article directories the new SEO link directories? As 1990s-era link directories fade into relative irrelevance, article directories offer new opportunities for one-way inbound links. There are currently about 200 of these directories, none of which charges a fee. Article Directories: The New Web Link Directories? We are witnessing a new explosion in web directories that are actually worth the investment in time to submit to them. No, not link directories--their time has passed for good. The new directories are article directories. What Are Article Directories? Article directories are sites such as isnare and goarticles, which aggregate large numbers of articles into massive, categorized databases. Most of them act as clearinghouses for reprint content, encouraging visitors to add the content to their own sites. The articles are screened for basic indicators of quality and relevance before being posted. The articles each have an author's resource box, an "about the author" paragraph at the end of the article. The directories allow authors to include a link, and often, multiple links, in the resource box. I personally know of about 200 such directories that will accept articles on any topic--with a live link and without charging a fee. There are at least as many specialized directories that limit themselves to business-only articles, women's issues, technology, etc. All you need is a single good page of well-written content--and if your site doesn't have that already, you probably should give up your web ambitions right now. Article Directories' Linking Advantages * Anchor text. About two-thirds of the article directories allow for the author to select the anchor text of the link in the author's resource box. This is the primary value of the links from the article directories. The article directory pages usually have PR 0; some have PR 1-3. Fortunately, anchor text is often a deciding factor in ranking for non-competitive search strings that make up as much as half or more of all web searches. These links may also help a site that already has competitive PageRank but is getting beaten in the SERPs for want of anchor text relevance. * Relevant links. The links are at least as relevant as links from link directories. The page on which the link is located is categorized within the site according to topics such as automotive, technology, decorating, or sports. Since most of the directories use the article title as the webpage title, you can even assure that the title of the webpage with your link has your target keyword. * Traffic. Click-throughs on the links in the author's resource boxes bring traffic, particularly in the early days after the article is submitted. * Reprints. Clearinghouse websites that offer articles for reprint pack the double advantage of a link on their site and a link on any site whose webmaster chooses to reprint the article. In reality, few articles get reprinted since the competition for reprints is fierce. Moreover, fewer than a dozen of the 200-odd article directories actually get many reprints. The market is dominated, as most web markets are, by the best established sites. * Mindshare. A click-through from a traditional link is just another visitor. But someone who has read a page of content from your site and clicked through the author's resource box link is generally a highly qualified visitor who has been partly sold on the value of your offering. Meanwhile, even readers who do not click-through have been exposed to your message. You can help shape the market, building awareness of your product or service. In short, article directories offer just about everything the web link directories used to, and more.

I have been on the Internet for a long time. At least I have been doing marketing a long time in relation to the Internet as a commercial entity. Around the end of 1995 I speculated in domain names, learning about keywords and phrases and how they help the search engines find the content you are providing at your website. I continued to learn about keywords and as search engine optimization became a necessity I was ready to use what I had learned about keywords and phrases, domain names, search engines and content. There were quite a few people, say a couple of hundred who really knew how to use keywords to optimize websites. However, then it was to help search engines do a better job of indexing all of the content on the web. Now it seems the roles are reversed and the search engines are in charge. At least many seem to think so. Now there are also a lot of people, thousands, who claim to know all of the search engine secrets and some claim they can get you top listings if you just sign up with them, buy their Ebooks, buy their videos, or buy their software. I always have a hard time with the math. If these guys can guarantee you a top 10 listing for your keywords, then 11 companies sign up for their service that are also targeting your keywords or phrases, then how do they get all 11 customers a top 10 listing? There are a lot of things we have known about the importance of for years such as anchor text, titles for links, surrounding links with keywords in the body text to make the links more relative, alt tags, metatags, keyword count, and more. But now almost every day I see a website or article promoting a “new search engine secret” and it has a name I have never heard of. Then when I investigate and read up on it I find that they have renamed anchor text something else, keyword-count something else, etc. Just like Hollywood these days seem to only be remaking movies we have already seen and giving them new names, it seems there are a lot of people out there now renaming SEO methods that are as old as the Internet with new names and selling them as new secrets. They sell you these “new secrets” on video, in an Ebook, in a Seminar, or produce software that “optimizes” your website for you. Most of the SEO Gurus of today never actually optimized a website for themselves or anyone else with any good results. They simply advertised to other people that they know how to make them rich in 90 days with little or no work at all and can promise you top 10 search engine rank in all the major search engines. There are some of us who actually do the work and will keep on doing so and remaining ethical about the business. Its just hard to sit by and see so many people bilked out of their money with promises that no one can keep. I have clients send me stuff all the time. “Hey look at this new SEO technique I got in my email!” "Look at this website I found that can get us top listings in 30 days!” I go and read up on it for my client and find the same old stuff repackaged once again. Things I am already doing for the client is now a video or an Ebook and they cannot understand why I would recommend not spending money on it. If you are going into business on the web and you read this article, just learn one thing from it. There are NO shortcuts to success. Get rich quick schemes are just schemes. There is no magic formula or secret to getting top listings in the major search engines. If there is a secret, it is that it actually requires hard work to be successful on the web just like it takes hard work to become successful with any business on or offline. Buying an Ebook or a video or some software is not going to make you rich or get you top listings in the search engines. Anyone who tells you that work is not required to make money on the web is lying to you. Learn how to do this for yourself or hire a professional who does not promise you the sky, but also hire one that can prove the results they have gotten for clients and for their own websites. Testimonials are worth absolutely nothing. “Chris McElroy is amazing! He got me a top 10 listing for my website in less than thirty days! The videos are easy to follow and in just days I was an SEO expert. I recommend everyone buy his Ebooks too!” –-John Doe, New York— Now don’t you just want to run right out and buy my video? Too bad I don’t have one to sell. Nope, no Ebooks either. No Software to make you rich. But I can do the search engine optimization and promotion for your website and prove the results with weekly increases in link popularity and search engine indexing.

Why am I SEO Stoopid? I'm SEO Stoopid because I didn't properly take notice of what my stats could have told me. If I would have done, I would have noticed something sooner and factoring that something into my response would very probably have saved me a goodly number of lost posters and art print sales. My site is primarily about SEO. I've been doing it since 1996 or thereabouts and have clients of many years standing. Halfway through last year, I started adding posters pages to it. It's restful and unoressured compared with a lot of SEO, plus I wanted to see how fast I could get unrelated pages indexed and where and with whom, plus unexpectedly I found that I enjoyed doing it, lots of reasons. When the first two phases of Jagger hit, I was cool. It washed over my seo clients the way I expected it to (it had no effects at all), and it washed over my (by now only mostly) SEO site the way I expected it to (it had no effect at all there either). Then came the third wave. Oh dear! My site's serps (not my clients' - they're all fine) went into a decline that they still haven't come out of. I was getting damp postcards from my serps telling me what depth they were reaching. They told me in one message they'd dived deeper than any known footballers. Imagine! If they ever come back up they'll need time in a decompression chamber before they can surface again. I decided that since I was tanking anyway no-one would be finding my poster pages from the engines and so now was the time to hive my poster pages off to their own site, something I'd been meaning to do for some time as a site is unlikely to do well for two such diverse subjects. I got myself a new domain for them too, in anticipation of the day when I have more time and can settle them down on their own dedicated space - the demand I had for them shows that they deserve it and I'll be attending to this in the new Year. I put them in a little backwater personal hosting space I have with my Broadband ISP. I have a custom 404 on my main site and I adjusted it to make it plain to folk that I'd moved the posters to a new domain as they were swamping my SEO efforts. Now I always kept a good eye on my stats but I'd failed to note that results from Google, these days, aren't just from Google any more. They're from Google Images too - and despite the fact that I'd tanked in Google. co etc for text seaarches, unknown to me as my old stats package didn't make the distinction, my posters were still very very well ranked in Google Images. I only found this out by studying my Google Analytic stats, a service I'd only recently signed up to in anticipation of clients expecting me to keep them abreast of Search Engine and SEO events. I checked out "Michael Sowa Prints". I was in the 80's in Google but to my amazement I was at positions 1 and 3 in Google Images. I checked out "Salvador Dali Prints" and "Escher-prints". Same kind of deal, I was well off the main map and out in the boonies in the text-driven Googles but top 5 in Google Images. Go see, they'll probably still be there even now. So, what was I to do? All those potentially hard-to-get serps were going to waste as when people didn't see the result they expected when they clicked through, just my 404 page (polite though it was) they just went somewhere else. Hurriedly put all my pages back up again is what I did, and on my SEO site too, thinking to catch what business I can from what's left of the Christmas rush. I've left all of the links to the new site in place as they'll get people hopping back and forth from each site to the other, hopefully without realising. All the posters and art prints, the wall tapestries too, will have to be moved over eventually and on a permanent basis. You can have a site about SEO or a site that uses SEO to sell posters, you can not, not for any length of time, have just the one site that does both. Not the way Google are ordering the universe anyway. I'll change over slowly in January using individual 301 redirects and this time they really will be permanent. For now I don't believe it'll matter as Google, according to their own stats via Google Sitemaps, have no info about the new posters site and given everything else they have on their plate just now I don't suppose they'll be indexing it all and handing out a content penalty before I've moved everything over permanently. But look at the sales opportunity I very nearly missed, eh? Moral of the story is, make sure your stats package is the best that it can be. I don't think I'll be using my old stats package too much from now on, but I'll keep it on as it does have some individual visitor tracking capabilities that Google's version of Urchin currently lacks. Reading your stats regularly will save you money and time in the long run. But do make sure they're as detailed as possible - you may miss important information if they aren't! Don't be an SEO Stoopid!
Copyright 2006 Mark Nenadic You may have heard of black holes – not the astronomical kind – but don’t know what they are or how to use them to your advantage when it comes to your site and the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. To begin with, it is important that you understand that black holes in search engines can seriously impact the quality of all of your search engine optimization (SEO) strategies. For example, Google is currently the leader in both popularity and technology among search engines on the web. It functions by allowing its users to run a search using words or phrases. This will only happen more frequently as text-to-speech applications expand in their use. The way in which Google applies these words and phrases immediately presents the first fault within their indexing and searching strategies. Here, there lies a big black hole in the accuracy of the search results that Google produces. The location of this black hole? Whenever smaller, common words are used within a Google search phrase, it will provide you with different results than you would receive by using other common words instead. The following example explains this. If you perform the following searches: • Toronto Hotels • Hotels in Toronto • Hotels for Toronto • About Toronto Hotels You will receive different results every time. Though Google will indicate to you that you have used a common word, and that this word was excluded from the search, it will still have provided you with different search results depending on which ones you have used. Obviously, all of the above searches were for the same thing, but because of the small words used in the phrases, they achieved different results. Why? It is because of the black hole in Google’s searching algorithm The same is true when one changes the words from singular to plural, or otherwise makes grammatical changes. For example, the following searches all produce different results: • Debt management • Managing debt • Managing debts Again, these searches are obviously for the same things, but produced entirely different results. Try these two examples on your own computer, using Google, and you’ll see for yourself. It is important to recognize that in both examples, all of the searches produced relevant results. However, while they are all equally correct as far as context, the fact remains that searches for the same thing, depending on how they’re worded – right down to the pluralizing – does give different lists, with differently ranked sites. How does this impact you and your SEO? Consider you are running a website that sells widgets. You have done a great deal of work making certain that it is fully search engine optimized and have even reached the point where you are in the second rank at Google for the keyword “widget”. It has taken a great deal of work and maintenance, but you’ve done it…except that your target market doesn’t search for widgets using the keyword “widget”. They pluralize their search term, typing “widgets” in almost universally. Furthermore, when you check your rank with the term “widgets”, then you discover that you’re down at number 23! Though your work will bring you increased traffic due to your ranking for “widget”, it would have been a great deal higher if you’d included “widgets” in your search engine optimizing strategy. When you are creating a search engine optimizing strategy for your website, if you want to ensure that you will receive the highest results, it is important that you always include not only your primary keyword in your efforts, but also add a basket full of sub-keywords to cover all of your bases. By making certain that you are using your phrases in all (or at least many ) of the ways in which your target market will be performing their searches, you will bring in a great deal more traffic, and customers ready to purchase your products or services. If you are not qualified to do this alone, it is well worth the investment in an expert who can bring your search engine optimization up to a level that will cover all of your most important keywords.
You may be wondering how search engines arrange the top pages from millions of others. There are calculations involved and you have to work with these to put your site in page one. How Do Search Engines Work? There are three important elements that make up the database and finding of relevant material by search engines. From the inputting of words, the search until the hierarchy of results, there is a process that is mathematically formulated and produces the links and sites that suit best. 1. The web crawler. This is also known as a “spider” or “robot” which roams the web. It is a program that translates web pages and any existing links relevant to the page. The web crawler begins by looking through the web addresses that are available in its database or index. Any other page on the internet is added to the database should the web crawler consider it relevant to its existing index. Thus, the database continually grows and the web crawler also goes back to the index to check for updates and again search for new available links. 2. The index. The index holds all information of websites and pages that the web crawler has discovered during its frequent web roaming. Whenever any website or page is updated by the owner, the index also updates its stored information thus it continually grows over time. 3. The search engine. A search engine is a software that goes through all the information stored in the index whenever a search is done by a web browser. An algorithm supports the final results according to how relevant the websites found are to the search. The hierarchy of page results is determined by shutting on or off categories that the search engine feels is relevant to the search. The Goal of Search Engines The ultimate goal of a search engine is to provide the most relevant and informative web pages to the web browser. The effectiveness of search engines may be tested through search engine optimization. Page results for different search engines may vary depending on the algorithm that they are using. Thus, website owners aim to improve their rank based on the algorithm. How Can I Get on Page-On of Search Engines? 1. Links. Links are small routes leading to your website thus a lot of these will increase your visibility in search engines. When typing in a search, it is possible for your URL to be exposed even if the engine may be revealing another website housing your link. 2. Page Summary. Make your page summary more effective by using meta tag names and using keywords in a balanced manner. Be more flexible in your website’s description so that it can stand out even if the search is bound for a different category. This prevents your website from being completely shut out by the search engine. 3. Title. Although the true nature of the fixed algorithm used by search engines is not fully known, it might help to start with titles that begin with the letters A to E. Engines arrange equal scoring websites in alphabetical order. 4. Keywords. Wisely input keywords in your web pages. More is not better when it comes to key words since engines will decrease your value with too much repetition. Four to five keywords per page is the most you may be using to help boost your visibility. 5. URL. Share your URL as much as you can in multi and single-database services to increase your value. You may also put it in blogs, your friends’ linking addresss and emails.
Thanks to a ground-breaking agreement between Dell and Google, SEO may soon be a mainstream topic of conversation. Dell, the world's leading maker of personal computers, has announced that it is testing a pre-installed package of Google software, including a Google-powered Dell home page, Google Desktop Search, and a Google Toolbar. While the home page and Desktop Search will be an undeniable boost to Google's share of the Search market, and maybe even a threat to Microsoft's desktop dominance, it's the pre-installation of the Google Toolbar that will be of most interest to SE marketers and optimizers around the world. Currently a specialist 'industry tool' used predominantly by SE practitioners, the Google Toolbar may soon be automatically available to hundreds of thousands of mainstream computer users. As a result, Google PageRank and, by extension, search engine marketing and optimization look set to become part of mainstream vocabulary. (Well, maybe that's a little optimistic... Perhaps they're more likely to become part of the vocab of the computer savvy mainstream.) So what does this all mean to SEO and SEM? In my humble opinion, the four most important implications of the Dell-Google agreement are: 1) Business decision makers will finally 'get' SEO Although not overly helpful to SEMs and SEOs, Google PageRank is an ideal hook for busy decision makers. It's very simple (in that it's just a mark out of ten) and measurable, and it's just THERE; you don't have to go out of your way to see the PageRank of a site. It's exactly what decision makers need to get their collective heads around SEO. They don't have the time or inclination to understand the complexities of SERPs, IBLs, spiders, indexing, keyword phrases, metatags, article PR, SEO copywriting, etc. For better or worse, PageRank eliminates all shades of gray, leaving the two colors many decision makers understand best: black and white. 2) Business will become aware of the importance of PageRank While most business decision makers are aware that a good search engine ranking is good for business, they're not yet aware that a bad PageRank is bad for business. But with the Google Toolbar at their disposal, they soon will be. Decision makers will immediately start to use PageRank as a one-shot assessment of the credibility and authority of every website they visit. And in the process, they'll become painfully aware of what their own PageRank says about their company. 3) Business will be more Search-proactive Once decision makers realize that a bad PageRank is bad for business, they'll be more likely to be proactive about their search engine ranking. 4) More businesses will dedicate a budget to Search PageRank will become just a part of 'doing business'. Just like TV, radio, and newspapers, it will be proactively communicating with decision makers, each and every day. While the mechanics of a high search ranking will remain a mystery to most, the Search DOMAIN will no longer be considered a black art, and SEMs and SEOs will no longer be considered witch-doctors. This will make decision makers far more comfortable dedicating a budget to Search (especially as they now have something measurable to grab a hold of - see point 1 above). Conclusion It appears that Google has once again made a very astute business decision. For better or worse, they've improved their position in Search and made significant inroads into the desktop software market. Will they threaten Microsoft's desktop dominance? We'll have to wait 'n see. Will they enrich the SEM / SEO industry? In my humble opinion, yes! Google may not be everyone's favorite search engine, but if they bring PageRank into the mainstream, the Search industry will finally attract the percentage of corporate advertising spend it deserves.
