    : Today there is a lot of information available on the web about how to get good search engine rankings, some information is good and some information is bad. Over the few years search engines have been around, some myths have developed. Some of these myths are actually just out dated techniques and some are misunderstandings because the web is such a new medium. Below I have explained the top seven myths I have seen floating around the net. $45 will get you #1 position This is my number one pet peeve. The ads that say for $45 you can get a top page listing with Google, Msn and others. This is not a myth it is an out and out lie. It's absolutely impossible to guarantee any rankings. All you can do is have someone optimize your pages, apply an Internet Marketing Plan to your website and hope for the best. It is also a lot more complicated then paying for your listing. If that's the case the highest bidder would receive the highest listing. Multiple submissions help your rank The truth is submit your website once, if in a few months your website has not been indexed then submit it again. Chances are that your site will be indexed by Google (indexed pages are pages that a search engine has added to its list of pages it has already looked at and uses when a searcher performs a search) and Yahoo and many other search engines because the search engines want to supply as much relevant information to the searcher, therefore they need to have more indexed pages. That's the bottom line. Also, if submitting your website to the search engines is something you are doing yourself, then think about only submitting to a few of the important ones that feed the other search engines, this cuts down the time. It's all about meta-tags First I'll explain meta-tags. They are HTML tags that can be used to define the HTML specifications a webpage follows, keywords and description of the page, etc.. The most common use of a meta-tag in online marketing is the keyword and description tags, which tell the search engines that index meta-tags what description to use in their SERP (search engine rankings page). Meta tags are good, they definitely can't hurt. Unfortunately they are not everything the search engine uses to determine the topic of your site or it's ranking. There are many other key factors you need to consider. The best thing to do is not to cram 50 keywords in your meta tags. The best practice is to put one or two per page with, each page having different keywords relevant to the page. The truth is that most meta-tags aren't particularly important and aren't used by search engines at all. Google has already stated it ignores most meta-tags. They can be useful to show the description that comes up after your listing in the SERP. Page Rank is God Page Rank is definitely not God. Although, it is a good tool. As a web designer, I like to use it determine whether I would like to trade links with another website. Again, there are many things search engines use to determine rankings. Page Rank is not the only thing used to determine your placement in the SERP. There are a load of other factors that come into play. Basically Page Rank is over rated by a lot of people. For example I searched Google for "purple monkey" and the first page on the SERP had a Page Rank of 5 and the second result has a Page Rank of 5 and the term "purple monkey" was in the url. The third page had a Page Rank of 7. Therefore higher Page Ranks do not necessarily mean higher listings but, it does help. All website designers and developers understand search engines. The answer is no, not all designers understand search engines. Just because they can create websites doesn't mean they know how to optimize them. Some designers tend to show off what they can produce, such as a fully flash site with all kinds of "bells and whistles" and no text for the search engine to read. Before you hire a website designer/developer or SEO expert ask for some case studies of sites they have optimized. The more links the better… The truth is the more relevant links the better. You can add your site to a gazillion free directories and it's not going to help your SERP ranking. What helps your rankings is relevant links. Links from sites on the same topic or a site that would be relevant to your visitors. Search Engine Optimization is technical Honestly, it's boring and time consuming. It takes a lot of time in front of your computer and knowledge of how search engines work. It is something you can do yourself, but the easy and cost effective way would be to hire an expert. SEO is one of the most cost effective marketing strategies you can use for your business. The bottom line in Search Engine Optimization is it's time consuming, hard work and it has to be done by a human. If you are a small business and have a little knowledge you can do it yourself, as long you have a lot of time on your hands. If you don't have a lot of time to waste, hire an expert.

         
    Seven simple ways to optimize your site for the search engines

     

    : Would you love to know the secrets of search engine optimisation? Here's a seven step guide to improving your ranking in the search engines. First you need to find what people are looking for when they visit your site. Researching what actual words people type in to search engines is vital, these are your “keywords”. Do your research on your keywords using Overture and Wordtracker. Overture will tell you how many people are searching on particular words or phrases.

    Wordtracker gives you an idea how much competition there is for those keywords. Once you have your list of keywords, then you are ready to optimise your website. I say keywords as, with increasing competition on the internet, you are more likely to have success with keyword phrases or a group of keywords, than with just one keyword.

    There are just seven easy steps:- 1. Name your site appropriately - if your site is about cat food, then include the keywords “cat food” in the title of your site 2. Ensure that your keywords are included in the page title 3. Add a Header tag using H1 tags 4. Use your keyword in the first line & last line of your content 5. Add an Alt Tag to your pictures which includes a description of the picture and includes your keywords 6. Ensure that your keyword is included in the outbound links from your site, an easy way to do this is to link the page back to itself. 7. Sprinkle your keyword a couple more times throughout your text and ensure that you have at least 250 words on the page. If you can't write this much, then write an introduction and then add a free article from one of the Article Directories, such as Ezine Articles.

    If you include most of these on each of your pages, you'll find that you should move up in the search engine rankings over time. All of these methods are what is called “on page” optimisation. You can also optimise “off page” by building links to your website, using one of the many link swapping sites available. You can also create quality links to your site is by leaving comments when you visit other people's blogs. When leaving a comment, ensure that the “name” you leave includes your keyword, where possible, and a link back to your site.

    For example, you could leave a comment from “Jo @ Cat foods”, linking back to your website address. If you're not sure where to find relevant blogs, either type in your keyword and the word “blog” into any of the search engines, or visit Blogger and run a search for your keywords.     Should meta tags be used with search engine optimization

     

    I deal with many questions from curious website owners everyday. One question I have a new answer for is, "Should I use META tags on my site when do search engine optimization?" Old Answer: It couldn't hurt, but don't worry about them, the search engines ignore them for the most part. New answer? Read on... Should I really use a META tag? Really? The new answer is yes, you should use META tags on your site. The keyword META tag is still not used by search engines but when submitting to directories, a valuable use of time by the way, the META keywords are used in many cases to automatically fill in the keywords for your site in that directory. Even more amazingly, the META description tag has soared in importance. How so you ask? Google has started showing the META description in its search results when certain criteria are met. The criteria being used appears to be very simple, unlike many of the other things Google does. When the keyword or search terms appear in the META description, the META description is used instead of the snippet of text containing the keyword on your page. For example, if you do a search in Google for 'Big Oak SEO' you will see our site in the first listing and the description used is our META description tag. All three words being searched for are also in our META description. If you do a search for 'big oak client' you will see the first listing is pulling a snippet of text from the page itself. Since 'client' is not in our META description, it uses a snippet of text from the page where all three words can be found. Where should you use a META description tag? Every website should use a META description tag on the home page at the very least. This way you can say exactly what you want and not worry the snippet of text being used is not best choice for your message. What this really means is Google is giving us some measure of control. And now that we have this knowledge and control, how best to use it? This allows us to take off our search engine optimizer hats and don our search engine marketer hats. Think of what you can say in the brief sentence that will entice a user to click your link rather than the one above or below. You can put your phone number in the META description for starters or how about being really creative and offer a discount or advertise a sale. Tell them your unique selling proposition. It should be a one sentence phrase already in your head. The only caveat to remember is that your META description will only show if the search term is in the META description. While this can be tricky, it can be done with some forethought. You can do this for all of your targeted pages and have dozens of marketing messages. Use the META description wisely: target your market and entice your customers. Do not abuse this control and put outlandish, untrue or slanderous statements as I am sure Google will be watching; and if this technique is abused the META description may have seen its last search result this time.

    If you're a small business with a website, but no SEO plan, you're missing an excellent opportunity to promote your products or services. Plus, SEO is not very expensive – with a moderate amount of time and money, you can start getting traffic from the major search engines. Assuming you're ready to start optimizing your website for top rankings on Google, Google UK, Yahoo UK, Yahoo, MSN, etc, there are three basic steps you should follow in your SEO plan. Step 1 – Choose your keywords. You first need to choose the keywords that you want to rank well for. I'd suggest that you start with 3-5 main keywords. Keep in mind that bigger, more completive keywords are much harder to rank well on. You want to choose keywords that quite a few people search for, but that the competition is low to moderate on. (Generally, the higher the top bids for a keyword are, the more competitive the keyword is.) Step 2 – Optimize your site. The easiest way to optimize the pages on your site is to use a free tool like WebCEO. This tool will check and analyze your pages according to the search engine algorithms, to ensure that you have the correct keyword density, etc, for your selected keywords. WebCEO comes with plenty of documentation, so I won't include instructions in this article. Step 3 – Build links to your site. Building inbound links to your site is actually the most important part of SEO. There are many ways to build links to your site. A few of the best methods are link exchanges, directory submissions, and article submissions. One could write an entire book (in fact, many have been written), on building links, so I won't go further into the details in this article. If you are SEOing for a particular country, like the UK, be sure that you either have your site hosted in that country and / or your domain uses that country's extension. The principles in this article should give you a good start in getting the knowledge you need to SEO your site for top search engine rankings. Have fun!

    I have posted articles on search engine optimization in my blog but I thought writing more about new things about seo will be better tackling new way on how to get a good ranking on search engines. To get the needed targeted traffic in search engines such as Google, you need your blog, and your post to prominently show in the top ten search engine results. There are also tools to determine the rank of every keyword in key phrase to be used in the titles and first paragraph of the post to be able to get high ranking. There are two factors affecting search engine ranking of a blog – on-page and off-page optimization. The former means that you have to make use of high ranking keywords to be used on your post (meaning putting it in the title or the first paragraph of the text) and off-page optimization which is getting quality back links pointing to your blog and its pages. To on-page optimize your blog, as what I stated in my earlier posts: * Keywords - it is what the search engine look for in your title tag and the content of your post when someone type it in the search engine. When you search on a particular phrase, the title or the content of the web page with the exact phrase you have searched for will be the first to be shown on search engine results. * On page relevancy - since Google has tweaked its algorithms on title tags, it now requires that your page/posts should have relevancy to your title in a particular keyword your choose. It simply means that your title has a particular keyword that is being search and some of it is also found in your posts. For off-page optimization: * Get a lot of one way links - since link-exchange and reciprocal links no longer works and it will only clutter your site template Google looks at it with a frown. But one-way links is the best way to get page rank they said but I said since page rank does not contribute much in the search engine ranking, links to your posts from other sites with a particular keyword. It means that many sites links to your blog with a particular keyword your blog page located on your title post and on the body post itself your blog page will show higher on search engine results. Let us say your blog post is about “niche fishing”, and there are thousand of links pointing to your page from the anchor text “niche fishing” your page will be put on the top list of the search engine when someone look for the term. But don’t jump on creating links like this yet. Search engine looks at the thousand of links going to a blog especially if it’s new as a link spam, and your effort will be wasted. * One way links with the right anchor text (ex. “niche fishing”) pointing to your post from other sites. Links should come from variety of locations (let us say forums with different ip address, social networking sites that are not owned by just one owner (know what I mean). * Do not overuse the keyword or same anchor text in your link building effort. Just one keyword pointing to your blog post will trigger search engine suspicion. * Creating links to your blog should be done minimally at leas 8-10 links a day will be enough in order for your blog post not to be put in the Google Sandbox. Getting back link is easy but requires a lot of effort. You can manually submit your own created articles or rehash content from private label articles to article directories. Here are some of the article directories that you can submit your articles: Articledashboard GoArticles Ezinearticles Isnare ArticleHub ArticleCity Or you can use a software called Article Submitter that I use in submitting articles to 300+ article directories manually or automatically. If you have problems creating content, I suggest you grab PLR articles, and rewrite it using Article Content Spinner or other article rewriting software’s to avoid duplicate content issue. Join forums. Look for forums that allow user signature. Use title of your blog and its link as your sig file. Be active in forums and post or reply to posts. Read the rules however in posting so that you will not get banned. You can also avail of the Forum Assistant Pro in handling various forums on your account. Minor methods but highly popular is leaving comments on other blogs. You can use as your username your blog title in posting comments. However, you should be posting comments that are fitted on the posts or else your comments will be considered spam by the blog owner. This will help you both a catalyst for the indexing of the web pages and also move a step forward in Page rank Building. 6. You may start Building links using Reciprocal Link exchange programs. The text links should not only point to your website homepage but also to other pages down in the website page structure. 7.
