The art of selecting keywords for your small business website

One of the most important aspects of search engine optimization (SEO) is the proper selection of keywords or key phrases. Keywords are the terms that searchers enter when using search engines like Google or Yahoo. For instance, a user looking for someone to help them build a small business website might enter terms like ‘website design’ or ‘small business website’ into the search box. The search engines use those terms to find ‘relevant’ web pages. What makes a page relevant to any particular search is the topic of another discussion, but it is clear that the presence of related keywords on a webpage create a high degree of relevance. So in the search for help building a small business website, search engines will be looking for web pages that contain the specific search terms as well as other information that is relevant to the same term. Selecting the proper keywords for your website is crucial to making sure your pages are returned when searchers are looking for the products, services or information you are providing. While there is certainly a lot of information available about how to select keywords, in reality, keyword selection is as much art as it is science. It is a mix of ratios, search probabilities and good detective work to figure out what searches will be looking for, and how the search engines will relate you webpage to their searches. In general, you can think of keywords as mini ads for your website. Make you ads to generic and searches, and search engines, may overlook the specific thing they are searching for. You can think of keywords as falling into three basic categories: Niche, Primary and Secondary. Niche keywords are very specific and may result in a low volume of searches but a higher listing in search results. For instance, a site that sells SEO services may focus on the keyword phrase ‘increase ExactSeek page rank.’ For searchers who are knowledgeable enough to understand this term and are targeting the ExactSeek search engine there is a high chance your site will show up in a search for ‘Increase my page rank on ExactSeek.’ However, there will be less people searching for this phrase then say, ‘get better search engine rankings’ or ‘get better search results on Yahoo.’ The up side with niche keywords is that there is less competition for the keyword. Primary keywords are those that appear to be a good balance between volume of search and competitive use. These are the words you should consider focusing your SEO efforts on. These words have good amounts of search volume because they are relatively generic, however they are a good match for your website’s content. These keywords do have competitors, but there is likely enough search volume to generate traffic for your site. A page optimized on the keyword ‘non-profit website design’ would be relevant to a good number of related searches but would have less competition than a page optimized for ‘website design.’ Secondary keywords provide a good volume of searches but have a higher level of competitors. An example is ‘website design.’ While there are lots of people searching for ‘website design’ there are millions and millions of competitors. Secondary keywords should not be ignored because of the potential volume, however, trying to optimize for such a generic term without other primary or niche keywords will likely not lead to much traffic. In summary, ideal keywords receive a reasonable number of searches in major or niche search engines, are relevant to your site’s content and are not heavily used by competitors. Keywords that have below average search volumes still may be excellent choices because they may be very relevant to your specific content and have limited competitors. Select multiple keywords for your site and consider using unique keywords for each page if the content is different. Aubrey Jones is President and founder of Riverbank Consulting, Inc. The basics of seo some faqs

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a foreign field to a lot of people. Rarely does a day go by when I don't get asked a few questions on the subject. So I've decided to post this FAQ article in the hopes that it will help people understand the basics, and make them a little more comfortable with the whole domain. Q: Why are search engines important to me? A: 85% of all website traffic is driven by search engines. The only online activity more popular than search is email. 79.2% of US users don't go to page 2 of search results. 42% of users click on the no.1 result. For the under-40 age-group, the Internet will become the most used media in the next 2-3 years. Q: How do search engines decide on their rankings? A: IMPORTANT: You cannot pay a search engine in return for a high ranking in the natural results. You can only get a high ranking if your content is seen as relevant by the search engines. Search engines identify relevant content for their search results by sending out ‘spiders’ or ‘robots’ which ‘crawl’ (analyze) your site and ‘index’ (record) its detailsplex algorithms are then employed to determine whether your site is useful and should be included in the search engine’s search results. Q: Can't I just pay for a high ranking? A: No. The biggest concern for search engine companies like Google and Yahoo is finding content that will bring them more traffic (and thus more advertising revenue). In other words, their results must be relevant. Relevant results makes for a good search engine; irrelevant results makes for a short-lived search engine. Most search engines these days return two types of results whenever you click Search:  Natural/Organic – The ‘real’ search results. The results that most users are looking for and which take up most of the window. For most searches, the search engine displays a long list of links to sites with content which is related to the word you searched for. These results are ranked according to how relevant and important they are.  Paid – Pure advertising. This is how the search engines make their money. Advertisers pay the search engines to display their ad whenever someone searches for a word which is related to their product or service. These ads look similar to the natural search results, but are normally labeled “Sponsored Links”, and normally take up a smaller portion of the window. Q: How do I get a high ranking? A: There are four main steps: Step 1 - Use the right words on your website Step 2 - Get lots of relevant sites to link to yours Step 3 - Use the right words in those links Step 4 - Have lots of content on your site & add more regularly Q: What is search engine optimization (SEO)? A: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of creating a website which is search engine-friendly. This means:  using the right words in your copy  using the right words in your HTML code  structuring your site properly  designing your site properly For more information on these 4 elements, download our free 'SEO Secrets' eBook from divinewrite/seosecrets. htm. Many people use SEO to also describe the other ingredient in a high ranking, 'Link Popularity'. Q: What is link popularity? A: Think of the search engines as a big election. All the websites in the world are candidates. The links to your website are votes. The more votes (links) a candidate (website) has, the more important it is, and the higher its ranking. Link popularity is all about how many links you have, and how you can get more. Links to your site tell the search engines how important your site is. They assume that if it’s important enough for a lot of other sites to link to, it’s important enough for them to display at the top of the rankings. Links are the single most important factor in ranking. Generally speaking, the more links you have to your site from other sites, the better your ranking. Q: Are some links better than others? A: Yes! The ideal kind of links are those that:  come from relevant sites (sites which use the same keywords);  come from important sites (have a high ranking);  include your keyword as part of the visible link text;  include varying link text (not the same link text each time); and  come from a page that links to few other sites. When a search engine sees a link which satisfies most or all of these conditions, it says, “Hey, this site must be credible and important, because others in the same industry are pointing to it.” Q: How do I get lots of links back to my site? A: There are many possible ways to generate links. Some are dubious (like auto-generation software, and sites set up by webmasters simply to host links to their other sites) and I won’t be discussing them here. Others, like those discussed below, are legitimate.  Add your site to DMOZ & Yahoo Directories (and other free directories)  Check where your competitors’ links are coming from  Article PR - Write and submit articles for Internet publication  Swap links  Partner websites  Pay for links For more information on these methods, download our free 'SEO Secrets' eBook from divinewrite/seosecrets. htm. Q: What do you think is the best way to get lots of links? A: Article PR. Write helpful articles and let other webmasters publish them for free in exchange for a link in the byline. With article PR, you don't have to pay for the link, you determine the content of the page containing the link, you determine the link text, and the link is more or less permanent. A single article can be reprinted hundreds of times, and each time is another link back to your site! For more information, read divinewrite/seoarticles. htm or visit ArticlePR. Q: How do I write a good article PR piece? A: See divinewrite/seoarticles. htm. Q: How do I get a high ranking using free reprint content? A: See divinewrite/Top_Ranking_Free. htm. Q: How long does it take to get a high search engine ranking? A: A long time! It’s impossible to say how much time you’ll need to spend generating links, but you can be sure it’ll be a while no matter which method of link generation you use. You just have to keep at it until you have achieved a high ranking. Even then, you’ll still need to dedicate some ongoing time to the task, otherwise your ranking will drop. Q: What is the Google Sandbox, and is it real? A: The Google Sandbox theory suggest that whenever Google detects a new website, it withholds its rightful ranking for a period while it determines whether your site is a genuine, credible, long term site. It does this to discourage the creation of SPAM websites (sites which serve no useful purpose other than to boost the ranking of some other site). There is a lot of anecdotal evidence supporting the theory, but there is also a lot discounting it. No one has categorically proven its existence. Q: What is the Google Dampening Link Filter, and is it real? A: The Google Dampening Link Filter theory suggests that if Google detects a sudden increase (i. e. many hundreds or thousands) in the number of links back to your site, it may sandbox them for a period (or in fact penalize you by lowering your ranking or blacklisting your site altogether). There is a lot of anecdotal evidence supporting the theory, but there is also a lot discounting it. No one has categorically proven its existence. Q: What SEO companies should I be wary of? A: Be wary of SEO companies that promise or guarantee results in a given timeframe, especially if they won't expand on their methods for generating links back to your site. Q: What tools can you recommend? A: There are many very useful tools to help with your SEO. The following are just selection. All tools are free unless otherwise indicated.  Backlink checker - webuildpages/neat-o/  Backlinks by IP address - webuildpages/cclass/index. php  Link Popularity Tool - marketleap/publinkpop/  Number of links required to rank - iblcheck/  Google Alert - google/alerts? hl=en  Google Sitemaps - google/webmasters/sitemaps  Google Sitemap Generator - johannesmueller/gs/  Google Toolbar - toolbar. google/  Indexed Pages - webuildpages/cache/cachetoolpublic. pl  Keyword Analysis (Nichebot) - nichebot/  Keyword Analysis (Overture) - inventory. overture/d/searchinventory/suggestion/  Keyword Analysis (WordTracker - Paid) - wordtracker/  Keyword Difficulty - seomoz. org/tools/keyword-difficulty-tool. php  Keyword Identifier - googlerankings/ultimate_seo_tool. php  Keyword Density Measurement (Simple) - live-keyword-analysis/  Keyword Density Measurement (Complex) - gorank/analyze. php  Plagiarized Copy Search - copyscape/  Traffic Rank - alexa/  Search Engine Rank - marketleap/publinkpop/  SEO Report - urltrends/  Top 10 sites for a keyword by no of backlinks and age - webuildpages/seo-tools/whoischeck-bykeys. pl  Top 10 sites for a keyword - webuildpages/cool-seo-tool/  Spider Simulator - tools. summitmedia. co. uk/spider/ Q: I'm confused about all the terms used in SEO, can you help? A: See divinewrite/seo_glossary. htm. Q: What is keyword analysis? A: The first thing you need to do when you begin chasing a good search engine ranking is decide which words you want to rank well for. This is called performing a keyword analysis. Keyword analysis involves a bit of research and a good knowledge of your business and the benefits you offer your customers. For more information, download our free 'SEO Secrets' eBook from divinewrite/seosecrets. htm. Q: Do I need to submit my site to the search engines? A: Theoretically, no. But I wouldn't risk not doing it - especially as it's free. As soon as you register your domain name, submit it to Google! Even if you haven’t built your site, or thought about your content, submit your domain name to Google. In fact, even if you haven’t fully articulated your business plan and marketing plan, submit your domain name to Google. For more information, download our free 'SEO Secrets' eBook from divinewrite/seosecrets. htm. Q: Should I submit my site to the search engines more than once? A: No need. Although some of the search engines allow you to do this, there's really no need. Q: What are directories and should I submit my site to them? A: Directories are websites (or web pages) which simply list lots of website and give a quick description of the website. Some are free and some require you to pay for a listing. Free directories are useful because you get a free link. However, the links aren't worth that much. Paid directories can be good if they're relevant, but they can cost a lot in the long term, so choose wisely. One essential directories for any website is the DMOZ Open Directory Project.

    The benefits of article submissions

: Search engines, we all agree, are critical to the success or failure of your website or online venture. If the search engines don't find your business within the first page or two of search results, you're doomed to mediocrity at best, failure at worst. But most of the giant websites have millions of dollars of capital to throw at regular advertising campaigns; you couldn't advertise at a kindergarten football game, let alone the Superbowl. But there's another route for those of us with great ideas and work ethic, but little cash: directory submissions. These are sites that store free articles for sharing, contributed by website owners who get one critical item in return: a resource box with the contributor's link, formatted in the manner he or she prefers. And you simply give the article to the directory. Give A Little, Get A Lot Most people who hear about this for the first time are appalled. Give away articles? They're hard to write, time-consuming, and besides, you want them for yourself so you can have fresh content on your own site. But that's not the point. Fresh content and search-engine-optimized articles are helpful to a degree to be listed well on the search engines, but links back to your site and the amount of traffic you get are becoming increasingly important. Content today is much more important for keeping the customers that the search engines first send to your site. If you have good content already, you can gain the audience to enjoy it by donating articles. When you're listed in an article directory, three things happen: • The search engines pick it up as a quality inbound link; many directories are top-ranked on Google and other search engine sites. • Your website will be naturally indexed, which is a much better way of getting it into search engines than waiting for them to pick it up. • You'll gain traffic from the directory itself. All that from a single article submitted to one directory. Give A Lot, Get Even More If you want to rise in search engine rank more quickly, you can submit the same article to hundreds of article directories. Each directory, though, is time-consuming. It can take up to a half-hour with some systems to submit your article, and that's after you locate the directory and assess its quality. Many webmasters go to specialists instead of performing this task themselves. Article Submission companies and contractors will take your single article and submit it to dozens of websites by hand, resulting in hundreds of inbound links to your website that will be tracked by the search engines. The best news: these companies can submit your information faster and cheaper than you could imagine, freeing you to developing your website, serving your customers, and filling orders. Be careful who you choose, though. Many directory submissions services submit low-quality packages that article directories will reject, providing you with little or nothing for your money. Look for directory submissions companies that guarantee their work and who operate quickly. Then watch your rankings in Google and other vital search engines rise!

The benefits of keyword enriched articles

If you are the owner, operator or manager of an Internet business, you likely find yourself constantly on the hunt for ways in which you can draw more traffic to your Internet business website. In this regard, one program that you might want to consider implementing is the use of keyword enriched articles at your Internet website. In this regard, you may not understand exactly what is meant by and involved with keyword enriched articles. When a person undertakes a search, using a search engine service on the Internet and World Wide Web, a person uses certain words and terms in order to find what he or she is seeking through a particular search engine search. Generally speaking, these words and terms and phrases are known as keywords and keyword phrases. By way of example, say that you are a seller of widgets on the Internet, that you market widgets through your Internet based websites. If a person was looking for widgets, that person would type widgets or keyword phrases that contain the word widgets into a search engine search. If the word widgets is used appropriately on the website that you are operating, a person searching for widgets -- perhaps a person looking to buy widgets -- very well may end up at your website. You will want your website to end up high on the list of a person’s search results. One method that you can utilize to ensure that your website obtains a higher ranking in searches relevant to your website and your business is the use of keyword enriched articles at your website. When a search engine undertakes a search, if you have properly placed keyword enriched articles at your website, you will be able to draw more traffic to your site because these search engines will pick up the keywords used in one or another of these articles. When all is said and done, you will want to give serious consideration to the inclusion of keyword enriched articles at your business website. The use of keyword enriched articles within your business website can be a helpful tool to drawing more traffic to your business website, to drawing more customers of clients to your business. In the end, the use of keyword enriched articles can work to increase the profits from your business enterprise both now and well into the future.

    The benefits of seo

SEO stand for Search Engine Optimization. It's a fancy term that means a website is user friendly to search engines bots. When you use SEO on a site you fix the site's meta tags, title, discription, and even the body of the index page, among other things to give the bots the best possible idea what your page is about and how relevant the content is to everything else on the page. Most search engines have a submission form making it easy to get you listed from a few days to a week and often a site with SEO techniques on it won't matter at all for them. You won't be at the top of the rankings, but that's the price you'll pay for doing it for free and with a 2nd tier or lower search engine. Even Yahoo has submission forms, and now multiple of them depending on the purpose of the site. Google however, has surpassed Yahoo in usage, making it the current #1 search engine in the world, so it's really them you want to be listed in. Google's search engine bot is automated. There are no more manual submissions put into the Google index anymore. It's been said using their submission form could take a week to years to getting listed to not even at all. It's bot crawls the internet looking for websites to index according to their relevancy. As it combs through your pages it looks for words that tell it how your site should be indexed and if the words it finds really are what your page is about. InBound and OutBound links need to be relevant to your page as well. If your site is not relevant, or not relevant enough, it may move on and not list you at all. So, basically, Google is at the top of the mountain and you want your site Google bot friendly. On my first site, I thought I had done this correctly, but to this day it's not listed in Google. After having some inspiration for anotehr website I openned a new page. I was picky with sites linking back to me and careful keeping each page slightly different in subject matter, but just enough to hit other keywords the Google bot may like when seeing if it was relevant. It was already preset with SEO as a habit so when the bot came along, everything it found through the SEO, it would find onsite. Sure enough, I was listed very, very quickly. Especially when you compare it to the zero listings of my first site in a much longer period of time. It's really amazing how quick the bots add you when it's done correctly. The extra time it takes to make sure everything is just right more than makes up for the extra time it'll take to get it listed and indexed the hard way.

The benefits of seo in link building

The benefits of SEO in link building Let me tell your story on your behalf. I am a Webmaster who is building links for the benefits. I know that there are thousands like me. Exactly what are the benefits one is looking for thru link building? Those are detailed below. • Rushing Traffic to one’s own Website: Lots of visitors should be coming in. A theme that links one with the other enriching the visitor also enriches the link partners with business. Somebody comes to a website away from you. The reciprocal links come to work and can bring the visitor to your website. The more your linkages are, the better your visibility will be. • Your website will go up in ranking: The keywords and the number of links are essential for the search engine to reach your website through direct or reciprocal links. So it is beneficial to get linked to websites with similar themes. • Rich content of Your Website: What is rich content? It is the ability to enrich the visitor with information, new looks out and improved vision. It is quite possible that you and not provide all to most of the visitors. So what to be done? One has to be cementing with other like minded websites with clever positioning. One should take a stand from where the visitor knows exactly about what he/she is looking for. Some visitors may be lost after ending up at your website, so it is better to help them out into safety with better knowledge dissemination while traveling out of the site. • The more linking one does; the more credible one becomes: When you place a link with others, others put a reciprocal link to you. In that process, the reader realizes that your are referred by a number of sites and hence the credibility of your site goes up. Don’t think that you are the only one with good source to everybody. By becoming one out of so many, you become important. Web traffic is of course important, but your image also builds up in the process. • Be reachable to all in the Internet Community: Link building is free advertising the website. With every link you reach a section of web audience. When you reach, you are traversing a path that it is traffic which people follow to reach you. When people with similar interests interact through and because of you, you are considered to be a serious component of the community which increases credibility. • Website affiliation : the other road towards link building : Without your initiation, there will be some websites that will link up to you, which means that some traffic will end up at your doorstep, which gives an illusion of an affiliation to another website. It results in increasing credibility and visibility and you will be better recognized. Your site can be submitted to relevant directories that take link building started. It should be done as early as possible. Time is money and you can immediately start benefiting as soon as you get underway.

And these factors seem to be most important for big search engines like Google, Yahoo! and MSN. When I speak about off-page factors I mean not only the number of the links pointing to your website. If you want to achieve top positions in search engines you must care about relevance of your back links. Let's say you are a web designer. In your case the most valuable links are from another web designers websites. Very valuable will be links from related industries like web hosting, search engine optimization (seo) or webmaster tools. By contrast, link from site like online casino will have minimal value for you. From this reason exchange links with relevant websites only. Internet is full of sites related to yours so why waste your time with gaining worthless back links? When webmasters exchange links, a lot of them care too much about pagerank of partner's website. Yes, you are right -- link from PR8 site is better then link from PR0. But keep in mind that those new sites with PR0 will grow with time and their PR will grow too. It can easily happen that you exchange a link with PR0 website today and after 6 months this site gain PR5+. And now let's answer this important question: What is easier -- get link on PR0 website which will grow or on PR5+ site? From my point of view each link has big value as long as it is from relevant website. Let's look at another factors used by search engines to determine the value of back links. You have probably heard terms "one-way" and "reciprocal" links. One-way links are links where webmaster of site A links to site B but webmaster of site B doesn't link back to site A. Reciprocal links are links where webmaster A links to site B and webmaster B links back to site A. There are two important facts: 1. One-way links have a little higher value for search engines. Search engines suppose that one-way links are most likely natural and predicate the quality of the linked website. 2. Reciprocal links have a little lower value from the reason mentioned above. But it is easier to get reciprocal link then one-way link (In case that your site is quality, of course. For poor websites it is always difficult to gain back links). Anyway relevant reciprocal link is always better then one-way link from unrelated website. The last factor I will describe in this article is the age of the domain. If you get link from the 5 years old domain the link will have higher value then link from the new site. Many spammers register domains for one year, use them as link farms and when they are banned by search engines (it takes probably less then one year) then they don't renew this domain and register a new one. On the other side, if the site is a few years old and had never used any unfair SEO tactics, search engines give this site higher importance. So if you are trying to improve link popularity of your website, don't forget that it is not only about pagerank. You need links from quality websites. Making your website the best in your field is the right way how to get these valuable links.

People fails to do so and they market what they have products and promote it online or offline marketing. You have to come out from this mentality; do not convince customers to buy the product that you want to sell. Or do not pursue your customers with hammering on with the product’s technical superiority. Do not think that just by improving the web site you can capture the market, it may fail instead sometime. When customer reaches to your web site or read your prospect with a feeling that it may fulfill their own desire and expectations about the product, which they want to buy. If at this moment you shall focus your marketing strategy such a way that you really fulfill their need, and you Won! Do not forget to ask yourself the questions like what is the first and most important concern about your prospects have? What are their other requirements? What way you can support them to solve their problems to overcome and clear their way to come to your product? To support such types of need you have to update your promotional material either in broachers or on websites to craft to meet their need. You first go through your promotional materials and satisfy yourself with queries like; - What is fruitful for me in this product? - Does the abstract of promotional material specify what I want and shall I keep on reading till end? You should be aware about the best features about the product on you web sites or in the promotional material in print. Majority cases everybody print name of Company, but sure that the name of the company itself shall highlight the product effectively. It is the prime important that company name itself give confidence to customer about the product. If I will explain with the examples to justify the above case, by chance if you want to open an account in any bank in your hometown and if you go for search about your requirement. If you see on the street with various signboards about the Banks, which flashes their important features may be as follows; - Bank A offers - AMERICA’S FIRST SINCE 1950 - Bank B offers - HIGH YIELD SAVINGS, IMMEDIATE ONLINE ACCESS If you read both offerings which one you choose? May be Bank B, which draws your attention very first as it highlight about better result-oriented bank and offer best service by online access. And you will naturally open account with Bank B. You shall offer plenty of reasons so people buy your product. If you want to earn more money, you will prefer to hire business coach, to be a good golfer or tennis player you naturally prefer to hire the services of good trainer. To increase the productivity in company you prefer to have better and faster computers or HDTV for better enjoyment and entertainment by viewing TV with better resolution and higher definition of picture. So to promote your product you must generate justifiable reasons that appeal to the customer so that they prefer your product. You must learn the secret to attract all your customers, key to success is stop trying to convince your prospects to buy, and instead of you must focus on their need and requirements. You convince them that you really help them to choose the better product then selling any product. By this, customer will have confidence in you and think to buy your product or services.

The connection between reciprocal links and seo

If you are a webmaster you will have undoubtedly heard of all the hype going on about one way and reciprocal links as a way of ranking higher in the search engines. The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) industry is currently one of the most spectacular and dynamic entities that dominate the online economy, and the truth is that every web owner should keep an eye open for the trends that characterize SEO. Reciprocal linking is – and always has been – one of the top web promotion methods. The idea behind reciprocal links is simple: one webmaster places a link to a different website and, in return, that website also places a link back. This helps both websites as visitors from one will also go to the other and vice versa. However, there are bigger stakes here – the search engines rank websites on several factors, but one of the most important concerns the number and quality of back links of your website. If you get hundreds of links from established websites that are also related to the topic of your own website, chances are your search engine placement will be excellent. Pleasing the three main search engines The power of reciprocal links is huge, as it is one of the most effective ways to get Google, Yahoo and MSN to favor your site. While you know, as a webmaster, that high quality content and good linking are the best keys to long lasting success, chances are you don’t like to spend hours and hours carrying out manual link exchanges. This is why there are tens of thousands of amazing websites out there that are barely known by a few people – their webmasters are simply overwhelmed by the idea of exchanging the necessary number of links to rank high on Google, Yahoo and MSN. While there is no set number of links that you need in order to have your pages displayed in the top 10 results, you will most likely need hundreds or thousands of links. Automating the process In order to address the needs of webmasters who would love to promote their websites but simply don’t have the time or energy to carry out hundreds of manual link exchanges, many web entrepreneurs have designed automated link exchange software and websites. One of the most popular and innovative ways of dealing with link exchanges is through automated directories. Not only will these link exchange directories facilitate the link exchange process by offering other webmasters a fast and easy way to performing the exchange, but they also offer excellent link management systems. A great linking directory you may want to consider is: o MyLinkMachine Veteran Internet marketers will tell you that keeping track of active and broken links is almost as important as acquiring them in the first place, so the tools that come with such directories are real time savers. The automated link directory approach has several other benefits, such as the fact that you can categorize the reciprocal links, offering a better structure for both link partners and website visitors.

The death of the link exchange

Link Exchanges have been used since the beginning of the internet as a way of gaining popularity in the eyes of the major search engines. This used to be the best way to gain positioning in the major search engine results for your given keywords. Your company could gain ground fairly quickly by utilizing link exchanges. Wikipedia’s Definition of a link exchange: Link Exchange ("Reciprocal Link Exchange") is the practice of exchanging links with other websites. There are many different ways to arrange a link exchange with webmasters. The simplest way of doing it is to email another website owner and ask to do a link exchange. Also visiting webmaster discussion boards which offer a dedicated link exchange forum where webmasters can request a link exchange be it of a certain category or open to anybody. Link exchange has been a long time practice by website owners since the beginning of the web. In the last few years (after year 2000), this practice has gained more popularity as search engines such as Google started favoring sites that had more links in the rankings. This system was very accurate at gauging the importance of a website when it first started, leading to the popularity of Google. However according to experts, search engines no longer place a heavy emphasis on reciprocal links. Instead, the popularity or credibility of a site is now gauged by one way incoming links to that site. In addition, analysis suggests that it is very important both that the theme of an incoming be link be relevant to the page being linked to. This definition can be found here: en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Link_exchange The death of the link exchange is officially here. Relevant one-way links are the most important aspect of search engine optimization since the newest algorithm changes for the major search engines. Yahoo has gone as far as denying sites admission into their search submit program for having a link exchange program, considering it spam (I have personal experience with this). The best way to build relevant links is by utilizing these aspects of search engine optimization: 1. Directory Submissions: The all important DMOZ ( dmoz. org) and yahoo directory ( yahoo) are mandatory for any company seeking high rankings in the search engines. Be sure to search for relevant directories for your company. You can do this by searching for your major keywords in search engines with the word “directory” and will find them fairly easily. 2. Article Submissions: By writing articles that can be reprinted for free, you get free advertising and webmasters get content to deliver to their customers through an article database or e-zines. You are allowed to include a resource box at the end of your article that contains information about your company and the all important link to your website. 3. Social Book Marking: Social Book Marking is a new trend on the internet that was pioneered by sites like del. icio. us, furl. net, digg and many others. This is the act of book marking a site to a public (or private) favorites archive that other web users can use to find important information. You then use tags to identify your book mark for the relevant keywords. This also generates a link pointing to your site. The link exchange has officially become useless. End your link exchanges now while you still have the chance to do so. In the near future, search engines may penalize sites that take part in link exchanges, so take advantage now and get rid of them before you lose crucial positioning in the search engine results pages.

    The devaluation of reciprocal links

Three or four years ago a massive link trading campaign could get your site to the top of the Search Engine Rankings (SERPs). However, things are changing quickly concerning reciprocal linkspanies like LinkAdage [ linkadage] are receiving increased reports that reciprocal links are becoming a less effective part of SEO. In fact, it now seems sites that go overboard with reciprocal link campaigns are getting penalized in the SERPs by having most of their reciprocal links completely ignored by the search engines. Adding to the problem are the Link Exchange Networks that are popping up all over the web that put websites at risks associated with being part of an artificial linking network. Remember, any “link network scheme” is only as strong as its weakest link. It is to your advantage to stay away from these link exchange network schemes, programs, or clubs if you want to keep the search engines happy. If your dead set on trading links, do your trades one-on-one with other webmasters and not through some multi-level like link trading scheme. Remember, if you participate in an artificial link exchange network, one slight algorithm adjustment can knock all the participating sites out of the search index in one swoop. Websites should have no more than 15% reciprocal or traded links. The key ingredient to SEO linkage strategy is to make your backlink structure look natural. Websites with huge amounts of reciprocal backlinks and few one-way links are clearly trying to game the search engines and today’s search engines algorithms are smart enough to spot and penalize these websites by potentially ignoring all of their reciprocal links. If you have gone too far with your reciprocal linking program, you are at risk of those links simply not being counted. This makes it extremely important to only use reciprocal links in moderation. If you read any of the major search engine forums, you will see lots of threads about established websites that have been top 10 in the SERPs for years, suddenly dropping to the top 100 without making any changes. I have had the privilege of studying many of the affected sites, and the common denominator seems to be an over reliance on reciprocal linking programs. We believe that reciprocal links that formally counted as “real” backlinks are now being seen for what they are – links traded to game the search engine algorithms. If a website passes the 20% reciprocal link threshold, there is a very real danger that all of its reciprocal links will be discounted. The effect of this can be a disastrous drop in the SERPs. It seems many websites that have thousands of reciprocal links suddenly are only being credited for a handful of natural links they have accumulated over the years. So what can you do? If your website currently ranks well but relies heavily on reciprocal links to achieve its good rankings, now is the time to start figuring out a strategy to increase your percentage of one-way links to reciprocal links ratio. Here are a few simple things you can do to achieve this goal: ** Offer something on your site that inspires other webmasters to link to your website ** Write articles for content hungry sites in exchange for a link to your website ** Eliminate any cross-linking between your own sites ** Delete some of your reciprocal links to garbage websites ** Delete reciprocal links to totally unrelated websites ** Delete any reciprocal links received though participation in an artificial link network scheme. ** Start buying one-way links from related websites

The elusive practice of search engine optimization

Search engine technology has completely revolutionized the way we retrieve relevant information. Mastering the algorithms that drive these marvels of technology is the challenge, and assures the webmaster complete marketing success. In 1990, Alan Emtage at McGill University developed the first search engine, named Archie. Its purpose was to create a database of web filenames that could be queried, and retrieved by any user. Archie helped address this data chaos by integrating a script-based data collector with a standard expression matcher for relevant user query retrieval. Contemporary search engines use software 'spiders' that go out into the internet, and retrieve content and data. Armed with this retrieved data, search engine algorithms rank content based on the relevance of what the user is searching for. It is the job of the webmaster to optimize a web site based on relevant keywords, so that search engine algorithms list their URL as close to page one as possible. This is the practice of Search Engine Optimization, determining how search engines think, and if successful could lead to very lucrative returns. The process of search engine optimization is plagued with unscrupulous scammers, spammers and deceptive practitioners. This is referred to as Black-Hat Search Engine Optimization, and it hurts the search engines as well as the users who query them. Black-Hat techniques employ techniques that trick the search engines with thousands of meaningless articles loaded with keywords carefully chosen to draw traffic, and generate quick revenue. In addition to link farms that artificially inflate the importance of an otherwise irrelevant web site. Some black-hat hackers attempt to negatively influence competitor’s rankings by exploiting various search engine vulnerabilities. All these practices dilute the true value of legitimate web sites, and realize only short term gains. Gradually search engines started recognizing these techniques, and have taken proactive approaches. Algorithms have been developed to uncover and ban sites that employ those practices. Search Engine Optimization is a long term goal that requires astute and careful planning. White-Hat optimization is the ethical means to this end. "Give the public what the public wants", this is the mantra of any successful search engine. If a user places a query, and receives very relevant data, the user will most likely return for future inquiries. The objective of white-hat optimization is to provide the user with a content relevant search result. White-hat search engine optimization is the practice of improving the design and content of websites to draw more search engine traffic in an ethical manner. Content is king, it is important to have content that's relevant to your visitor’s expectations, otherwise they will just hit their back button. It is important that your pages are well structured, using descriptive page titles and other page text. Further, keyword rich inbound links must be built, and submitting original articles will accomplish this goal.. Providing fresh new content will assure repeat visits with the opportunity to expose more products to your users. White hat SEO techniques can take some time to implement however their results tend to last for a long time. As the web continues on its exponential growth path, the need for better search engines becomes more vital. These are the challenges that face the search engines, as well as the experts that contribute to their success. Search engine optimization is an art that requires skill, and creativity, a synergy of original content, efficient marketing, and site analysis. These are the foundations for a successful search engine optimization campaign.

    The forgotten fundamentals of seo

Introduction: Firstly, thank you for taking the time to view my SEO hints and tips e-book on the often forgotten aspects of SEO. This book was written from the collective knowledge and information gathered by Chris Diprose, owner and manager of Kanga Internet. Kanga Internet are located in Melbourne, Australia and they focus on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Web Development for the Joomla Content Management System (CMS). With Search Engine Optimization there are lots of unknowns, educated guesses and knowledge gained from personal and associative experience. Google, Yahoo and MSN keep their cards close to their chest when it comes to revealing how their ranking systems actually work. They tell the community trickles of information on what things can affect search engine results, how they can be improved and what to do in certain situations, but mostly knowing what to do to achieve good results is achieved by studying and hard work. Much alike other SEO consultants I have gathered information from various sources and worked constantly on improving results for customers. I am always looking for new intelligent ways to improve search engine results. I believe in "White Hat" (or more appropriately, "Grey Hat") principles. Edition 1 of this e-book is intended for people looking to improve their websites from the ground up. I address SEO design fundamentals; the things you need to consider before embarking on any text and keyword analysis. I hope you find these hints and tips useful. Enjoy the readings herein. - Chris Diprose The Website Revelation – What owning a website actually means. As a Web Developer and SEO consultant I deal with many existing website owners who are looking to modify or improve their website. I also deal with many people who are looking to start their web presence with a new website. Through both of these interactions there is often a common theme; a misunderstanding or an attitude. I call this a misconception of reality, as often the reality of what the Internet can actually do for the persons business and what they think it can do differ massively. Often it is presumed that by simply owning a domain and having a website built and published on the Internet, thousands of people will magically find the website, visit it and buy their products. "If you build it, they will come" should be removed from the vocabulary as soon as possible if you are to adjust attitudes to the underlying search technology. As a businessman in the real World, it is obvious that it would not happen outside of the Internet ether, so what is so different online? Maybe it was the Technology boom 10 years ago that caused a rift in understanding or maybe the buzz that caused the meteoric rise in the stock prices of Tech Companies, I can hear the thoughts of the small businessman, "surely this can be replicated for my business" – in answer I would say, "well, it is unlikely, but you should be able to achieve some results over time". It is most important when taking on a project like Search Engine Optimization for a website, to know that it is important to be committed for the long haul. It is no small task and sufficient funds need to be allocated to the project. Delivery deadlines need to be correctly scoped against required changes, in order to meet client expectations. The key points of responsibility to the SEO project are in knowing that there are big changes near the start and during setup but the changes do not stop after setup, there are a continuous ongoing refinements to the design and system over time. In this regard I find it important to manage expectations and set realistic long term goals on what a website can be expected to achieve and in what time frames those goals hope to be met. So what should your goal be when you are delving into SEO for your website? Well, everyone’s goal is exactly the same; improve page rankings, improve page visits and hits and finally gain more sales through the website. When it comes to SEO and achieving these goals you have to have principles and my main principle is, "Good websites get good ratings and bad websites get bad ratings or none at all." As time goes on with the improvement of search engine technology and the refinement of search engine results this statement becomes truer and truer. I believe in results through "white hat"(reads; "Grey Hat") principles and methodologies. What are "white hat" principles? I guess I would compare it to doing things the honest way and the right way without risk. So develop a good site, promote good linking, have good informative content and keep working on it and then you are on the road to good rankings through "White Hat" principles. So, why should you do things the "white hat" way? Well, search engines do have some kind of understanding, an artificial intelligence. They soon catch on to websites spamming or linking to websites with no relevance and bad cross linking. It’s about being smart, in for the long term and wanting your business to grow organically, naturally. So how do I go about improving my site and making it optimized for search engines naturally? Well, that’s why you’re here! So let’s run through few of the things you should be doing in your websites from a fundamental level. Domain names: When choosing a domain name, choose one that is relevant to the product or service you are going to provide and that is as simple as possible. There are considerations of branding and product/service provided that should go into this choice. Involvement of marketing personal and product understanding is required but also consultation with your SEO professional is advantageous. In this step I would say, take some time and choose wisely. Keep it simple and easy to remember, often saying it out loud will make it clear whether it can be understood by a simple man. It is a strongly held belief by many SEO professionals that buying a domain which is older, and that has been around for a while, means it will not be sand boxed by Google. What’s the sandbox effect? Well, it refers to what Google does to a website or domain that is new or is relatively unknown by Google. In many instances Google’s Sandbox effect relegates the new domain to sub-optimal inclusion in search results. Regardless of the sites optimization it lowers the websites relevance and ranking to the term searched upon. If you can use your old business domain name, then consider this very important. If, however, you are buying a new domain name then keep it relevant to the product or service being sold or offered on the website. Keep it close, relevant and simple. Relevance is primary. Location specific domain or international domain (.com or au)? Personally I think dot com’s are better, mainly because they appeal Internationally but if you want to you can keep it location specific and to your region then consider purchasing all similar higher level domains, yourdomain and yourdomain. au, if you can. Choosing a Host: Fast, reliable and gives you all you that you need and want. Preferably gives a unique IP. Again some SEO professionals believe this can also have a detrimental affect in Google rankings but from my experience it sometimes does and it sometimes doesn’t. I have had some sites come in with high PR rankings on shared IP’s and others when I shifted to a new IP the PR of the site jumped, so this is still a bit of a mystery when it comes to Google rankings. I guess a consideration Traffic considerations: When choosing your host ensure the plan you are on can be expanded so that any new increases in traffic can be accommodated accordingly. Site Design: There are several fundamental things to consider when you are modifying or designing a website. Flash: Flash is has been popular for a few years now and I truly believe it has its place. It is a great way of showing many products or services in a small area, has great visual impact if done properly and can set a good friendly tone to the website visitor. Having said that, I also hate flash; it can be an absolute nightmare when it comes to search engine optimization. What you should know about flash; it cannot be read by a search engine as the search engine cannot read the text or the images contained within it nor can it interpret what is in the pictures being shown. When it comes to flash I would suggest, not making your whole website flash. If you are designing a new website and you want to use flash then use it in high impact areas to capture the attention of your intended audience but use it sparingly. It is important to ensure that as much text content(to a maximum discussed in my next book, generally 300-500 characters) is available on the webpage and in simple HTML. Frames: Many older websites were designed with frames. Frames are where the main home page is actually a frameset page that includes several other pages into it. This makes the page hard to index in search engines and should be avoided. While Google do now index framed sites, it is important to note that most of the other top search engines still cannot follow frame links. They only see the frameset page and ignore the rest of the inner frames. This presents an SEO problem to us because it is highly likely those inner pages contain our content keywords. Nowadays this is not really a huge issue as it is so uncommon for a designer to actually use frames but the easiest way to resolve the issue would be to enforce a no use policy on frames. Page Layout: According to research the Googlebot trawls web pages from left to right and top to bottom. So given this little tidbit of information it is clear that you should be putting our most valuable keywords and information on the left and near the top. Of course this is a blanket statement and does not take into account design principles and beautification. Just keep it in mind during design of page layout. Position your move relevant keywords to the left of the page and near the top. Good HTML Coding: A lot of HTML generator programs out there bloat HTML to the point it is 3-4 times larger than what it would be if you hand coded it. Keep it simple, use a text editor, edit your HTML the old school way; until there is a HTML generator tool worthy of use. If you can’t code HTML then do a search on the Internet and find a decent, free, e-book and learn how to do it. Javascript: This is very popular among many web development professionals for menu’s, popups, scollers etc etc. It would be my suggestion to use simple plain HTML menu’s or as little Javascript as possible in web pages. There are many small JavaScript menu’s out there that are slim on JavaScript code to reduce this issue and make it almost negligible. Don’t over clutter your site with JavaScript as it increases page size, page load times and the search engines won’t understand it. Image Sizes: Keep them small and use only what you need to. This is essential for decreasing page loading times and getting information onto the users screen as soon as possible. Overall page size and loading: The overall page size is an important factor. It should load quickly and be easily trawled. If you have followed the HTML hand coding, used minimal javascript, used simple table layouts and good image sizing then you should be fine. There is much evidence that supports the fact that Google and probably the other search engines also, do not like to scan huge files, so keeping your overall HTML page size below 25k is my suggestion. Dynamic URL’s & page/file names: Dynamic pages are roadblocks to high search engine positioning. Especially those that end in "?" or "&". In a dynamic site, variables are passed to the URL and the page is generated dynamically, often from information stored in a database as is the case with many e-commerce sites. Normal. html pages are static - they are hard-coded, their information does not change, and there are no "?" or "&" characters in the URL. Pages with dynamic URLs are present in several engines, notably Google and AltaVista, even though publicly AltaVista claims their spider does not crawl dynamic URLs. To a spider a "?" represents a sea of endless possibilities - some pages can automatically generate a potentially massive number of URLs, trapping the spider in a virtually infinite loop. As a general rule, search engines will not properly index documents that: • contain a "?" or "&" • End in the following document types:.cfm,.asp,.shtml,.php,.stm,.jsp,.cgi,.pl • Could potentially generate a large number of URLs. To avoid complications, consider creating static pages whenever possible, perhaps using the database to update the pages, not to generate them on the fly. Slightly Off Topic Thoughts: The topics covered here are not considered completely SEO topics but in terms of overall objective – increasing sales, this section is very important. Take these things on board, consider them, consult with your designer and marketing team. Make educated and informed choices on these topics when considering your audience and what your website objectives are. Screen Size: Over 65% of all screens in the World are set to run at the 1024x768 resolution. Of the remaining percentage, 13% are running at 800x600, 20% running at larger sizes and 2% are unknown. So this affects the way you design. It would be my suggestion to always design for the smallest user to visit your site, but often I find 800x600 restrictive so I tend to design for slightly larger. Not large enough to make an 800x600 user angry but large enough to make it look good on larger screens also. I weigh up my target users, my intended amount of content and find some happy medium. I generally design for 1000x620 as this is the perfect amount of real estate for a 1024x768 user when they have the browser top bar and status bar and Windows taskbar. colors and themes: One important aspect of marketing - selling - is the use of color. Meanings are attached to colors in the same way meanings are attached to words. • Gold is the color of wealth and prosperity. • White is the color of pure innocence and cleanliness. • Pink is the color of femininity and softness. • Green is the color of natural things and freshness. • Red is the color of danger and stress. • Blue is the color the calmness, intelligence. The majority of the World selects blue as a favorite color. It often represents "trust" Use of color to establish an image or a brand is common in the marketing community, yet when you visit the websites of many search engine optimization professional’s, it's obvious that color significance plays no part in their own web optimization. Some of the colors I found on SEO websites: • Baby Blue, a color which implies weakness. • Red, a color which implies risk, or danger. • Orange a color which implies a cheerful "levity". Orange is one of Americans’ least favorite colors. Although color selection is off topic for SEO I would consider it a very important factor in what SEO is trying to achieve, in the end, for your website – selling more product, creating loyalty to your brand and customer impact. color research is something you should seriously consider. In summary of color choices I would suggest studying and learning more about your customers, researching color choices and their relevance to your underlying products and making informed choices on these in collaboration. If in doubt then I suggest sticking to safe and trusted colors within safe eye pleasing designs. Gifs for logos & jpgs for pictures: Ensure you are using gifs for logos and background placements and jpgs for photos on your website. This helps reduce size and improve clarity of the web site overall. Browser: It is vitally important to ensure your web page works in both IE, Firefox and Opera. Testing other browsers is also an advantage but these are the main three in use nowadays (2007). I think quoting stats on the browser breakdown are irrelevant as you need it work in all browsers. W3C cross browser compliance is great for this. So, this brings us to the end of Volume 1: Fundamentals of SEO Web Design. There are many things to consider when designing a website or modifying a web site to make it more SEO friendly. Clearly I have a few more volumes left in SEO for websites.
