    What is your online portfolio worth

     

    I hear many people moaning that they are not earning enough money from their website/s online. They had hoped that they would be obtaining more online sales or a lot more money from programs such as Google adsense after all of the online promotion that they had been doing over the previous months. In this article, I write about the bigger picture, the long term value of each site. I have a lot of friends who are attempting to make money via the internet. Most of these people have invested in a number of websites which they are hoping will earn them a decent monthly income via adsense. They have spent a lot of time in attempting to drive traffic to these sites by way of writing articles and by other forms of website promotion. What I am finding however is that they are hoping for instant results and have a lack of patience. This time of the year (the summer), there are a lot less people who are willing to spend long periods on their computers due to the heat and the fact that a lot of them are going away on their summer vacation. Earnings from adsense are always likely to be reduced during these periods for these obvious reasons. My friends do not seem to accept or understand this however and see all of the hours spent in promoting their sites as a waste of their precious time. Another aspect which has greatly annoyed and frustrated a lot of my friends is the fact that they are seeing no movement in the page rank of their sites. In the last two page rank updates Google has seemingly only updated the page rank of new sites, and my friends were hoping that all of their hard work would be rewarded with an increase in the visible page rank of some of their sites. This again is a lack of patience and is very short sighted. The backward links that they have obtained should have already resulted in an increase in traffic to their sites and they should not be so obsessed with this page rank issue. No doubt in time Google will update the rank of all of the sites and to stop promoting each site now would be foolish. I also see each of my own websites as an investment. I would of course love to be able to earn quite a lot of money from them today but I am seeing it as a long term project. If I continue to work hard the traffic will steadily increase and within a few years the search engine position of each of my sites should be a lot higher than they are today. The portfolio of sites that I own, also have a market value. If I wanted to, I could sell them and surely the more work I put in to promote each site, the higher this market value should be. In conclusion, if you are not earning as much money from your websites as you had hoped, do not despair. Hard work generally pays off in life, see the whole thing as a long term venture, have patience and your rewards should soon arrive.

         
    What printing process will work best for your project

     

    So you now have your design and your message, you even had the color printing company selected. So what’s next? It’s now time for you to choose the color printing method you’ll use to get your ads produced. But it’s not about your knowledge of all the color printing methods available. It’s more than that. It’s about what would be the most appropriate for your special project. Will it be the offset litho this time, or a dye-sublimation would be more suitable to your ad? Here are some of the general guidelines made by most color printers to help you come up with the most appropriate printing method for your project. Remember that there are no hard and fast rules; only suggestions that can help you fast track your choice process. When you’re looking at personal use, hence you only need a low volume…… it’s best that you also consider using your desktop inkjet and laser printers. When you need only a few copies, you might want to try printing your stuff yourself and put off hiring your color printer for other bulk projects. It’s more practical this way. Either a color laser printer or an inkjet printer will do the job suitably. When you want proofs for your color printing ad…… you can either utilize, again, your desktop color laser printer or inkjet for the job. They’re very good at providing proofs especially for your text and general layout. But they may not be able to give you the precise color you expect. However, if you want a much higher resolution and digital proofs to boot, you might as well avail of color lasers, and dye-sublimation printing process. The last one is the process preferred by most graphic designers especially if you’re looking at creating that extra high end proofing. For bulk desktop publishing in high volume…… you would want to have offset lithography for those. This printing method is the most popular commercial color printing process when desktop publishing is involved; not to mention, it requires high volume mass production. That’s why most commercial printers use offset lithography for books, newsletters and brochures. In addition, offset lithography is also best for glossy magazines, brochures and catalogs that require spot color and full color printing because of the pictures and photographs in it. For business cards, letterheads, envelopes, labels…… offset lithography is also the most commonly used printing method. You can add engraving for a more subtle letterhead, and thermography for that raised look in your material.

    When I sit down with companies to talk about their web site strategy, one of the first questions that I ask is “Why did you originally develop your site?” Often, there’s a moment of uncomfortable silence before someone replies, “because our competitors all had one”, or “our customers kept asking for our web address”, or one of my personal favorites “to get our name out there”. In addition, some companies build a web site for branding purposes, or to provide information to potential clients, thinking that one-way communication is a valid goal. I’m afraid that I disagree. Using a web site merely to provide information is like using an airplane to drive around town without ever leaving the ground - you’re missing the real opportunity to help your business ‘take-off’ by creating leads and sales. After all, a web site is a corporate resource, and like any other resource it should provide a return on investment. That return should be immediate and measurable, meaning that the bottom line for any website is – how specifically has the web site grown my business today/this week/this month, and so on. Enter the concept of ‘conversion’. What is Conversion? For a business web site, there are three primary goals: - generating leads - selling products via e-commerce - generating referrals The reason that I say this is because these are the only actions that lead to real dollars. So, they’re the only way for your web site to produce a return-on-investment. When a visitor takes one of these actions, that is counted as a ‘conversion’ (as in converting visitors into leads and customers). I do understand that websites can accomplish other less-tangible benefits. I call these secondary goals. Typical secondary goals might include: - building credibility - supporting existing customers - recruiting partners or affiliates (this may be a primary goal if your business is largely affiliate based) I consider these goals secondary because if this was ALL that your site did, then you’re probably missing the real potential of a company website. Conversion Aids Site Development and Management Deciding that you want/need a conversion web site is actually a tremendously empowering moment. For example, your new goals can actually help you to determine what should or shouldn’t be included on your site (removing much of the politics of website development). In a sense you build your site backwards – start with your site goals and then flesh out the structure and content from there. As you use your goals document as a set of criteria for determining site content, there’s much less room for disagreement. Secondly, having specific web conversion goals allows you to measure the effectiveness of your site after it’s completed and live. That’s key because if you can’t measure web site performance, then improving it becomes much more problematic. So you’ll find that measurement and improvement are the keys to that ROI you’re looking for. Tips for Improving Conversion Rate Here are few tips to increase your conversion rate: 1. Give Direction To build interest in a product or service, consider structuring your website as a logical sequence of information, rather than a smorgasbord. The way to accomplish this is to reduce the number of links, and identify the best next click for each page. Then provide a specific link which is essentially a signpost pointing where you want your visitor to click once they've read the page they're currently on. 2. Trade Value for Value For lead generation sites, collecting visitors contact information in exchange for something is the desired outcome. The exchange should be high perceived value to the recipient, low cost to the provider, and have a low perception of commitment. Typical on-line exchanges of this sort include free-trials, product demos, and whitepapers. Be careful not to ask for too much information in the exchange (this raises the perceived commitment level). Ask only for information that's essential to you. 3. The Work’s Not Over Once your web site is up and running, the work isn’t over! Pay careful attention to the results you're getting. Establish a baseline of results and then begin making changes to impact your conversion rate. Make sure you allow enough time for changes to show an impact, if your site gets only a few visitors, each test element might be in place for a month or even longer.

         
    What to remember when writing ad copies

     

    Before you write down that very first word in your ad copy, especially if it’s for your advertising newsletter, be sure to read the following tips to help you develop the right and proper message in your marketing tool. Always remember to write carefully. This means that when writing your piece, be very careful of what you’ll say in your ad copy. Once something is written, it is very hard to take it back. This is the reason why lawyers always put everything in black and white. A written statement always stands in court. And it is always more tangible than any verbal declaration. Hence, writers should always be careful to avoid creating mistakes in their spelling, grammar, punctuation and word usage. One wrong word can mean a whole document of errors and misinterpretation. A Sense of Style. Style can go a long way in making yourself easily understood by your target readers. But style can also make your message ambiguous and prone to numerous misconceptions of your intent. Thus, when you write using a unique and creative style, you have to steer clear of jargons and slang words, first and foremost. You have to understand that everyone, even the common guy, should be able to comprehend your message. Using jargon and slang words can often confuse rather than explain your message further. Try not to use abbreviations unless you’ve defined it beforehand, and never use symbols if you can help it. Clichйs should also be avoided. Proofread, proofread, and proofread! Writing your ad copy is not complete without proofreading the whole lot. Checking it thoroughly at the end of your copy will help you straighten out any creases and correct errors, and even change some of the ideas presented. When you proofread be sure to check the spelling and the grammar especially with the help of your computer. But do not leave the editing to your computer; double check everything as computers do tend to be unreliable. And make sure that everything is clear and concise, to avoid being misinterpreted with your message. And remember to always provide short, precise and clear copy that gets to the point. Your target readers do not have the time to sift through all that unnecessary words just to get to your message. Do not waste their time and you’ll surely make a good impression on them. A Few More Tips… - Emphasize with brackets. - Correctly spell the names of persons and companies. - When you use a direct quote or text, be sure to place quotation marks around them, as well as on the titles of publications that you got the quote from. - And as always, keep your ad copy short and clear. Short sentences are way better than a long and winding copy.

         
    When will google update the page rank of older sites

     

    There has been another page rank update in the last couple of weeks but it seems as though this has only affected sites which previously had a page rank of zero. The question many people are asking is when will google update the page rank of all of the other sites which already showed a page rank? This latest update seems to be very similar to the previous page rank update in which the older sites were also not updated. When reading on various websites about other webmasters opinions on this current trend, I have found a number of reasons as to why this may be happening. Over the last couple of years there have been quite a large number of link exchange programs which have been created. This have proven to be quite popular but are frowned upon by google as the people who enter these programs are in a way cheating to get to the top. Most people are aware of the importance of backward links and these link exchange programs make it very easy to obtain them. In clearly states however in the google guidelines that webmasters should not take part in these link exchange programs. Webmasters who still go ahead are at risk at having their site or sites banned. The problem could be that it is very hard for search engines like google to establish which links that each site obtains are from these link exchanges and which links are actual real and valid links. It is possible that google is close to finding a formula to this problem and is delaying any page rank updates on older sites until all of the finishing touches are completed. My advice would be to never take part in any of these link exchange programs and that if you are currently in one, to come out of it as soon as possible. There are many valid ways of promoting a website such as via writing articles and by having good content which will encourage other webmasters to want to link to your site. I have to say that for somebody like myself who works very hard to promote my own websites, that it is quite frustrating to not be able to see the changes in the page rank, as when I see my sites go up in page rank it gives me a little boost and shows me that I am still doing the right things. In a way it should not really matter however as I am able to see my websites have higher rankings in the search engines, this itself of course is the most important thing. It is also a good thing that google are trying to stop the people who are trying to cheat their way to the top, that is of course if this is the real reason why there has not been a full page rank update for some time.

Know your customers needs before you make a decision about how to fill them. Market research helps to identify which customers you would want to focus on. Aspire to be a specialist more than a generalist in targeting your customers. Present similar kinds of information in similar ways. If you give your customers a puzzle, chances are they will not have the time to solve them. This means that you have to make it simple for them by using organized, patterned and logical sequencing. Do not be overly flamboyant. Bold, colorful, heavy graphics? Yes, they do catch attention but sometimes it makes words difficult to read. You can experiment with a lot of fonts, sizes, colors but always remember that readability should have more weight over gimmicks. Be practical.     Why link farm and ffa submissions are a bad idea

     

    : Before search engines got smart, a site's page ranking was based on keyword match-ups. When webmasters stock-piled their sites with keywords, the wrong sites were getting too much attention. Google decided to focus on a site's "popularity" instead. The number of incoming links became the focus of PR criteria. The theory behind this system was that if a lot of sites link to another site, that site would contain valuable content. But again, webmasters got sneaky. With this trend, we began to see the evolution of "Link Farms" and "Free-for-All" (FFA) sites. These pages were essentially a gigantic collection of (often times) useless links.
