What you need to know about students travel

Ў¤ The reason of your trip The foremost task is to mull over the raison d'Ёєtre of your trip for this determines the location, the monetary issues, accommodation etc. for your tour. When travelling across the globe can be edgy for the adults, what to say of the students! However travelling abroad for learning or picnic can be entertaining for students . Ў¤ For Holidays With Pals If the sole motive is enjoyment then your location should gratify your desires. If cartoons & rides fascinate & beguile you, place like Disneyland is what you require. If along with merriment you crave to enhance your learning & art & architecture absorb your attention, Germany, Barcelona & the like should be ascend your list. Subsequent to deciding a perfect location, collect information about the expenditure that is likely to befall your parents' pockets. Rummage around for some beneficial packages that can take you round the world in least overheads. Try to go in groups for that might save lovely bucks. But individual travelling can be economic if you know how to govern your outlay corresponding to what little you have. Ў¤ The Age Factor The age of the student makes lot of difference. If a student is young he should be associated with a chaperone. If a young student takes on the flight for the first time without parents, packing & reservations should be considered in detail & significance. All the medicines, warm clothes etc, should be vigilantly packed. it is always better & prudent to pin the I-Card of the student on his shirt. Along with the phone numbers of the hotel where the kids will take a breather, parents should have the complete itinerary. Ў¤ Travel For Purpose Most often students travel abroad to participate in some international competitions or to enhance their educational qualifications like going to States for a doctorate program. If studies have hogged your attention, search the university that can live up to your expectations. Surf the Internet; collect every small & big detail. Consult your teachers & other bigwigs in that area that which university will be an ideal five for you. If your providence does not click to a scholarship, don't abandon the idea to touch the skies for there's other channels . Like you can resort to fund raising which apparently might seem appalling & unusual but has tremendous benefits. Last but not the least, knock the door of student's loans. Loans are offered by government along with private companies & banks. All you have to do is to a little struggle, some jogging around but remember this sweat so dropped will make your fortune. two times you land up at your location, you can even carryover out a part time job to meet your day to day expenses & minimize the responsibility on your parents. two times you through with it, look for the costs. The cost includes your lodging, the course fee, food & the means to commute. Hunt for scholarships. These can be your best pals in turning your dreams to reality. Scholarships are offered by the universities & also by different organizations working in this area. A case in point is the AIFS offers a horde of scholarships. Those who are travelling with AIFS are awarded with these scholarships. Online information about the domestic as well as international scholarships is available. For instance CIMO - Centre for International Mobility feeds you the style to fund your travel to Finland. Lodging should also be deemed. If a number of your friend or relative is already nestled in that place or even nearby, the idea to stay with them is not a bad six. Else try for hostels & rooms on rents. But make sure that some planning for this is done beforehand. Finally, make sure that packing is accurate. Also initially old place, old people & their culture might perturb you but don't get distressed by these petty things. Keep in mind that if you are lovely to others, they will be amicable. All that is required is some time to get accustomed to the place, people & their customs. So, waiting for what. go ahead & live your dreams!

What you need to know when taking your first international trip

When you are planning to take your first international flight to visit and tour other countries, there a few things you should know before hand about the flight and what to do when you get to your destination. When you make your airline reservations whatever you do get an aisle seat. Even if you have to go to the airport to pick up the tickets an aisle seat is MOST important on those long flights. My husband, John, and I always, and I mean always, get aisle seats across from each other on the plane unless it is a plane that has a bank of seats with only have two seats in the bank. Take some really comfortable shoes. I always wear my comfortable shoes on the plane because they take up too much room in the suitcase (they’re Rockports, clunky but comfortable). When you get on the airplane, snag a blanket and a pillow for everyone in your party. They are always scarce and you might not need it right away, but you will later. Take sleeping pills with you and try to sleep, it helps. You will arrive very early in the morning and will be exhausted if you don’t try to get a little sleep. I can never sleep on airplanes but the pills help me relax a little. You will be landing very early in the morning so your hotel room will not be available until two in the afternoon. There have been plenty of European hotel lobbies I have slept in until I could get into my room. Don’t wear anything that is nylon on the plane because it will not breathe. The most comfortable thing is a long loose dress or skirt and a top with sleeves. For men causal slacks and a long sleeved shirt either with or without a sport coat. The best thing I ever wore was a floor length jeans dress with sleeves that buttoned all the way up from the hem to the neck. If it was hot, I unbuttoned it; if it was cold I buttoned it all the way up. Worked like a charm. When you are on the airplane get up and walk around every hour unless you are asleep. This will keep your ankles from swelling and don’t take off your shoes, just loosen them. Drink lots of water and avoid salt. Food on the airlines is minimal and awful. I’ve been known to pack sandwiches that are far better than anything they have to offer, just make sure you eat them before you land. Keep toiletries in your carry on, toothpaste, tooth brush, moisturizer, waterless face cleanser (the sinks on the plane in the bathroom are nasty) and tissues for removal. Moisturize your body a lot on the plane because the dry and recycled air zaps your skin. I take a small spritz bottle filled with water and spray my face every once in a while, it soothing and keeps my face hydrated. Don’t laugh the stewardess’s do this too. Be sure you take diarrhea and constipation pills with you. When I travel long distances one or the other always gets me. One trick I learned is to take some Neosporin with you and Q-tips. Put the Neosporin on the Q-tip and dot the base of your nostril with it. This will stop any germs that are circulating in the closed cabins. Don’t over pack. If you are not going on a cruise you will be schlepping your bags either everyday or every few days. My advice is to pack all of your clothes in tan, black and white which can all be interspersed with each other. One pair of black slacks and one pair of tan slacks can be paired with a variety of tops. A couple of scarves help make outfits different for the ladies and also come in handy as a head cover for religious sites. One pair of dark slacks and a pair of Khakis also work with different shirts for the men. Don’t forget a travel umbrella. Make sure your camera is in working order, you do not want to miss any of interesting things in the countries that you are visiting. Take plenty of extra photo cards if you are taking digital because I assume you won’t be taking a laptop to download you pictures every night. Buy that stuff locally and get more then you think you need, don’t cheapskate on this, over there it will cost you your eyeteeth. Besides you can always return it! You want to take a daytime touring pack that zippers closed. Carry in it, bottled water, Tums, hand wipes, a collapsible cup, alka-seltzer, SUNSCREEN AND LIP BALM, a small snack, an extra pair of glasses, both sun and prescription, a hat and if you are on a long bus ride, a book. I would also pack eye shades so if you are on that long bus ride you can black out the sun for a nap. Keep money and credit cards inside in a zippered compartment. While you are out enjoying your new destination never put your pack over the chair back or on the chair beside you when at a cafй or dining alfresco. I would always put the pack strap looped underneath the chair leg so no one could run off with it. Take lots of ones and fives. They are useful for street vendors and tips. Everyone loves the dollar. You will need to change some of your money into the currency of the country that you are touring. Shop around before you go to get the best deal. If you have a good relationship with your bank, they may be the best deal you will find. You will have to convert some of your cash into the local currency for little items like water, lunch or soda. Remember that no country will reconvert coins so spend those liberally. I know this very well since I have a necklace and a bracelet made out of foreign coins. Just use common sense when you are touring. Keep in mind that you are visiting another country and they don’t have the same rules as your home country. It is always best to respect their customs and laws; you are, after all, just visiting. Happy Traveling, enjoy it, we do! Copyright © 2006 Mary Hanna All Rights Reserved. Whats so special about samsonite luggage and what makes it different

The Samsonite Name The Samsonite luggage brand was launched back in 1941. It's name was derived from the biblical name of Samson, who was known for his great strength. Samsonite luggage was also known for the first brand to use leather-like material, which made their suitcases have an attractive stylish appeal, yet at a reasonable cost. The Samsonite name is still known today for its style, quality and durability. Samsonsite is constantly on top of new innovations and designs. Samsonite luggage produces an array of sizes; including hard-side and soft-side suitcases, carry-on bags, garment bags, duffles/backpacks, business cases and even children's luggage. Today it's still one of the world's largest and most recognized designers, manufactures and distributors of luggage and travel-related products. The Samsonite Difference Samsonite luggage is consistently rated highly among travel experts. Reviews offer that Samsonite luggage offers more durability, flexibility in packing, large selection of various styles and sized luggage. The reviews also state you'll find a variety of colors, along with different materials and extra compartments and pockets. Here is just a few words that consumers used describing Samsonite luggage: • "roomy enough for everything, but not heavy" • "exceptional build quality" • "great price and great value" • "tough and functional design" • "reasonable cost and packs like a dream" • "very sturdy and fits well in the overhead" • "well balanced design and stylish" • "the luggage perfect for traveling" Today you can find inexpensive luggage lines in local discount stores, but in reviews done, the luggage simply didn't hold up. In some cases the wheels fell off, handles broke and the material began to unravel. So when choosing your luggage needs, remember cheaper is not always better. It's always good to research and read consumer reviews before purchasing any luggage. When you do, you'll find that the Samsonite luggage name stands for quality and dependability.

Wheeled luggage why did it take so long

Remember when no one had wheeled luggage? Those days are long gone, yet it amazes me it took so long for someone to cater to the travel industry with something as simple as wheels. Wheels have been around for thousands of years and yet we just recently in the scope of things realized how beneficial it would be to have wheels on other things besides cars and bikes. The people who needed wheeled luggage the most were pilots and stewardesses who had to carry their bags all over the airport everyday. Then the Rollaboard was created by Travelpro founder Robert Plath. He made Travelpro luggage in his garage, while working as a pilot at Northwest Airlines. When other pilots and consumers asked for the luggage , Travelpro Luggage was born. The Rollaboard was quickly copied by competitors and the 22-inch Travelpro Luggage Rollaboard is now the industry standard. You and I need wheeled luggage now to make those connecting flights at the airport. You can find luggage carriers that are topped off with suitcase on top of suitcase at most major airports. People running to catch a plane trailing behind them is their luggage rolling along at 50 miles per hour. It is hard to remember back before this luxury was around because it is so common in our world today. If you are considering buying wheeled luggage you need to consider a couple of things like the quality of the wheels, if it has a telescoping handle and the material it's made from. If you travel very frequently you also need to look at the durability of the wheeled luggage, so it will survive the rough handling it will go through. Depending on your needs you could use a wheeled garment bag, wheeled carry-on luggage or a wheeled duffel bag. The convenience and time saving qualities of wheeled luggage makes them a great asset for any traveler. Since most manufacturers now have wheeled luggage everyone can afford them.

When is the best time to visit cancun

Cancun is a very popular vacation desination for all ages. Most would define traveling off-peak as "traveling outside rush-hours to avoid overcrowding in public means of transport." This sounds all too simple and as we might expect - easier said than done. If you love to be around other tourist than I recommend any time of the year to visit Mexico. By traveling off-peak, not only will you get cheaper flights and accommodations. You will also gain a difference perspective on travel - especially the added advantage of enjoying your dream destinations without huddling with the masses of tourists during holidays. And did you know that traveling off-peak means traveling during holidays (not before or after) when airfares are lower and there's less road traffic? Best Times To Travel For both air and car travel, avoid the crowds by traveling during the week, especially from Tuesday through Thursday. An added bonus is that airfares for travel Tuesday through Thursday are usually cheaper. Mid-morning and late afternoon flights tend to be less crowded, plus you can really avoid commute traffic during this time. This site also offers the load on late-night flights (also known as red-eye flights for obvious reasons): these flights can help you avoid traffic but it's only effective if you can sleep sitting up-right on a plane! Some of the most affordable Cancun travel deals of the year can be found in the fall. If you happen to find nonresistable super offer during off-peak dates that fall between major holidays, don't waste time. Book immediately with your discount travel agent. Never hesitate! Traveling off-peak to Cancun during the North American winter months rather than during summer is very popular. You might say what's the point in going to Mexico in winter when you're going there to savor the beaches? But the fact is, there is hardly such a thing as winter in the Mexico as it stays warm most of the year. In fact, it's not a good idea to fly there during the peak season (I. e., summer months) as this is the period when the hurricanes usually come. It also helps to subscribe to online newsletters of discount air travel agents such as Travelocity or Expedia. By having yourself included in these companies' mailing list, you can get your hands on off-peak travel promotions faster than those who didn't. So you see, it's not just the air miles! Finally, book your flight early to secure the most gains from traveling off-peak. One year's planning can certainly help you reap the reward of the cheapest airfares possible! On the other hand, booking last minute can also have its rewards. If you're the kind who can leave at a moment's notice, you can save a lot from last-minute flights and accommodations. After all, most airlines and hotels would rather greatly discount their seats and rooms than leave them empty!

When only the best boutique hotels will do

There are times when you want to splash out and immerse yourself in luxury. Boutique hotels are the ideal places for understated opulence. Whilst many boutique hotels fall easily into the “affordable” bracket, there are several whose sole purpose is to provide a discreet, private oasis, where your every need is met and you want for nothing. These hotels may cost more than you’re used to spending, but by the end of your stay, you’ll be working out how long it will be before you can afford to come back. What is it about these chic hotels that makes them so desirable? Thought The essence of hotels at the top end of the boutique market is in the thought, planning and detail that goes into their preparation and day-to-day management. Where should you look at for a very different holiday or vacation

On occasions people call our offices having previously only travelled to very normal and un-adventurous destinations. As the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours here’s my suggestion for a few places you may consider for your next holiday or vacation. 1. Egypt - Egypt is a great destination to go to if you are looking for your first very different holiday or vacation. The main places to look to vist are without a doubt, Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel and Luxor. All these places not only have amazing historical sites, but they all off great places to eat and both exciting and relaxing things to do. And if you want to combine your adventure holiday with a bit if traditional rest and relaxation, then you can also add a few days and one of a number of resorts along the Red Sea Coast, also known as the Red Sea Riviera 2. Jordan - Jordan actually borders Egypt so this is a great country to either visit in its own right or to double up with an Egypt tour. Another great advantage to Jordan is it’s a relatively small country and all the major sites follow a north to south (or the other way around) route. Jordans capital city is well worth a few days alone and by the time you add in Petra and the Dead sea, then a holiday of a lifetime awaits you. 3. China - China really just has to be seen to be believed. It has everything and is a country of total extremes. At any one time all the seasons are available, so instead of having to visit at different times of year to see the different faces of mother nature. You can go any time and just visit different areas and see them all in one trip. Places to definitely include in your visit are Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Guilin and if you have time a Yangtze River Cruise is well worth the time (about 3 days). 4. Hong Kong - Hong Kong may be small, but what it lacks in size in more than makes up for in passion and excitement. Hong Kong has a skyline that’s unmistakable and a feel that’s like no where else. The other great thing about this place is that it’s a perfect gateway into China, so you can definitely consider combining these two unique destinations. 3 or 4 days in Hong Kong is just about perfect and while there make sure you take in Victoria Peak, Aberdeen, Stanley Market, a ride on the Star Ferry plus Lantau and Lamma Islands and for the shoppers amongst you - make 100% sure to visit the Temple Street Night Market. 5. Thailand - Thailand is a Mecca for shoppers and sun worshipers alike. It also has wonderful sites to see, incredibly friendly locals and also is very easy on the wallet. Many of our clients take in Hong Kong, China and Thailand, as it’s relatively close by plane and again won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Bangkok alone is worth a good few days as there’s lots to see and one hidden gem is Tiger Temple. Not for the faint hearted, but if you want a once in lifetime adventure, in this place you can go in with live tigers, there not chained so (technically) you take your live in your hands !

Where to go when you travel to switzerland

Switzerland is known for numerous items: its cold climate, mountainous topography and its political neutrality, which is possibly brought on by its topographical seclusion and being one of the top mountainous countries in Europe. In actuality, numerous Swiss people, in particular those who reside in the Swiss Alps still preserve their cultivation, traditions and Alpine characteristics, pretty much untainted by the marks of the modern civilizations with predominance habitants build around Laax. More than 70 percent of its land space is covered by the Swiss Alps which is known for its jagged peaks and steep gorges. For instance, The Pennine Alps range, contains the Dufourspitze of Monte Rosa which stands at 15,203 feet and is currently Switzerland's highest peak . This is one of the ultimate travel spots in Switzerland. Of course, mountains there are not all so gigantic in height. The Jura, for instance, are smaller and lower. This is a favourite travel spot in Switzerland because of its cross-country skiing. Swiss watchmaking first began in the Jura Mountains. For mountain lovers, do visit the Mattehorn which towers overhead the state Valais Canton at 14,688 feet When traveling to Switzerland, one item that any individual have to bear in mind is that it's going to be indeed chilling. On no account forget to pack a winter coat peculiarly when you are travelling in winter months or if you are going to the Alps, where it can be really numbing. The resort of Chateau-d'Oex, which is nestled in a valley in the Alps is renowned for its skiing, hiking and hot-air balloon activities. Switzerland is otherwise known for its picturesque views of lakes and streams. These bodies of water furnish travelers with a pleasant scene. The river Rhine is principal river in the country but there are other river systems that one should also look into, including Rhine, Ticino, and Inn. Lakes in the Alpine region are gorgeous and any traveler in Switzerland will instantly fall in love with its serene and glassy surface. Amongst those that they must visit are the Lake Geneva, Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore, where Switzerland's lowest point lies; Lake of Neuchatel, and Lake of Lucerne. Another lake that is deserving of note is Lake Geneva, whish is considered to be Central Europe's largest lake. The Staubbach Falls in Bern is one of the must-visit spot. One of the ultimate travel spots in Switzerland is the Gothic Cathedral designed by Matth'us Ensinger from Ulm. It is an instance of 14th to 16th century architecture. Various international agencies can also be found in the capital city, including the Universal Postal Union. Zurich is the financial center as well as an significant commercial and manufacturing center. The city of Basel is noted for its textile and clothing industry. Lausanne, on the other hand, is a city in the western part of Switzerland. It is residence to such prominent celebrities as Voltaire, Gibbon, and Rousseau as well as the center for Swizerland's iron industry. Although widely known for its watchmaking and jewelry industry, Geneva is also the world's diplomatic center. It is where the headquarters of the United Nations (UN). The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) is also located there too.

Where to look for fall travel deals

If you are one of the lucky few who can be flexible in vacation travel, taking fall vacations can be a great bargain for you. There are a number of special things going on to capatalize on plus summer venues still looking for the last of the tourist dollar. Top summer destinations are usually great fall bargains. The weather can still be gorgeious and the crowds gone. Take a look at Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard during this time. Hawaii is typically a bargain in September. The summer crowds clear out and there are a few months before the holiday crowds start to come in. Look to Europe during this time, too. Many cities emptying out from the summer tourist crush are still hungry for visitors. Weather can be great and look for speacial deals on packages that combine airfare, hotel and transfers plus a tour or two. Colder European destinations can be a special bargain and look for great deals to Russia and Scandinavia around this time of year. For other ideas look to respositioning cruises. This is when cruises lines move their ships around to follow the sun. Most people want to cruise to the warmest, most pleasant regions of the world. Ships float and therefore they can pick up and just move from one side of the world to another to follow the sun. Most Alaska, Europe, Mediterranean and Bermuda cruises, for instance, are offered in the summer when the weather is the best in those regions. For cruises to South America, the preferred time is winter (our winter, when it's summertime in the southern hemisphere). The Caribbean is warm year-round, though since hurricane season stretches from June through November, the optimal time to cruise the islands is winter and spring, though many ships are there year-round. In Asia, since much of the cruising region is near or just north of the equator, temps are very warm year round, though the wintertime months are slightly more comfortable. To be in all of these places at the right time, ships reposition from one region to another, typically between seasons, during the months of September and October and April and May. These one-off oddball itineraries are called repositioning cruises and they're often deeply discounted because most don't include a whole lot of port calls. Many are two to three weeks in length, with a long, lazy stretch at sea crossing the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian oceans -- perfect for people who don't need too much action, though many lines feature guest lecturers and special entertainment and activities revolving around music, food, wine or other topics. You'll find some repositioning cruises that don't include crossing over vast oceans and therefore offer more ports of call -- for example, when ships move between the Caribbean and New England/Canada, stopping at points on the eastern coast of the US along the way. There are a slew of options. Get the most for your dollar and travel in the fall! See you on the road!

Which airline is really the best

Pick up any newspaper or watch any news channel and many times you will find something about the airline industry. Popular topics range in how gas prices affect airline prices, the latest merger or bankruptcy claim, an airline crash or problem with a flight and even terrorist attempts. Airlines even capture our attention by running airfare specials in the newspaper and on TV. The funny thing is, you don’t even pay attention to these advertisements unless you travel often or are planning a trip. So which airline is the best anyway? There are a lot of things to take into consideration when deciding which airline is the best for you. Price is usually a big factor for most travelers. There are a few things to consider when thinking about price. If you live near a hub for an airline you are certain to be able to get better fares. Think about if it is worth it for you to travel to a larger airport rather than taking a flight out of the airport that you live 10 minutes away from. If you are only saving about $50.00 it is probably better to just take a flight from the airport you live closest to. Remember, you need to think of gas prices and traffic – both of which are on the rise. Consider being flexible in your travel days to receive the best prices. If you can leave mid-week, then you are more likely to receive a better deal than if you were to fly Thursday – Sunday. These are the busiest travel days so the airlines take full advantage of this fact. Airlines also run special deals if you are more flexible with your departure schedule. This includes the time that you want to leave too. Early morning flights – very early morning flights – are often less expensive than mid-morning or evening flights. Think about rush hour traffic. If you leave before rush hour in the morning, or after rush hour in the evening you’ll most likely land a better deal. The best time to book your own flight online is Tuesday evenings between 12 and 1 a. m. Airline’s computers change their fares at this point and this is when they are available to the public to be purchased. If you catch an airline just right, then anyone of them can be the “best” when it comes to pricing. There isn’t any one airline that consistently has the best prices. Although, the discount airlines like Air Tran and Jet Blue tend to be cheaper. But these flights are only available in select areas so many times you cannot fly these airlines. Another factor to look at when deciding which airline is the best is the percent of flights that they have on time. These are the results of one survey that was conducted: Hawaiian Air Jet Blue Southwest ATA United Sometimes it’s better to drive than to be stuck on a flight that is delayed. Consider this on shorter distance flights. Carry on luggage has become more popular with travelers because nobody wants to be caught without their clothes and people want to get off a flight and go – not wait around for their bag to come round the corner of the luggage carousel. This is how airlines ranked for lost baggage: 1) Hawaiian Air 2) Jet Blue 3) Southwest 4) Alaska Air 5) Continental It’s also pretty frustrating when you have booked a flight and you aren’t allowed to get on it because someone overbooked the flight. How does that happen anyway? Here’s how the airlines ranked on passengers that were denied boarding: Jet Blue Hawaiian Air United American Airlines US Airways So which airline is the best? Everyone is going to have their personal opinions. But according to this, you should book a trip to Hawaii right away or else fly Jet Blue whenever possible.

White pass and yukon route to the klondike gold rush

When my wife and I recently stepped off a cruise ship in Skagway Alaska, we were excited to be revisiting some her family's history. In 1897 her grandfather Jim and her great uncle Albert, joined almost 100,000 gold-rush prospectors who were going to the Klondike to search for gold. They were among the 30,000 or so prospectors who actually reached the Yukon. The journey was long and arduous and they walked most of the way as their pack horse was used to carry their supplies. The Canadian Northwest Mounted Police insisted that each Klondiker must bring a year worth of supplies with them before they were allowed to go to the Yukon. There were two routes through the mountains to Whitehorse on the Yukon River: The first route was the Chilkoot Pass trail which was too steep for pack animals. Klondikers had to stage their supplies and leapfrog back to carry their year's worth of supplies up the steep icy trail. Many prospectors abandoned their quest here or perished in the extremely cold weather. Jim and Albert chose the second route called the White Pass Trail, which climbed to almost 3,000 feet in elevation out of Skagway and was just as steep and treacherous, but could accommodate pack horses. This information was of doubtful value as over 3,000 pack animals were killed on this trail which was nicknamed “dead horse trail”. Jim and Albert lost their packhorse during the climb but eventually made it to Bennett Lake with their supplies. They rafted down the Lake and onto the Yukon River while undergoing many difficulties and adventures, but reached Whitehorse and then Dawson City and the goldfields. Unfortunately most of the gold claims had been staked by locals and early prospectors and they ended up working as miners for the next two years until they had earned enough money to return home. The fact that they survived the extreme cold and harsh conditions was a tribute to their strength and indomitable spirits. Although they didn't bring home any gold, they brought home a lifetime of stories to pass onto their grandchildren. After my wife and I toured historic Skagway we then embarked on the most fantastic train ride of our lives - The White Pass and Yukon Route or WP&YR. We booked an all day excursion to Bennett Station British Columbia. The rail cars were authentic 1900 parlor cars or converted to look authentic and we joined our cruise ship passengers on a wonderful narrated tour back into history. The scenery was incredible and you had to marvel at the engineering prowess of the railroad builders as they constructed tunnels, switchbacks and hanging trestles up the steep mountain pass. The slow journey up the mountain gave us ample opportunity to view the steep and treacherous White Pass trail that Jim and Albert had climbed. We saw skeleton horse heads on the trail but whether these were of 1897 vintage or had been placed there by the local tourist board is not for me to say. We eventually reached Bennett Station where we had a box lunch and were given a guided tour before making the return journey to Skagway. It was an incredible journey which prompted me to do a little more research on the WP&YR and its links to the Klondike gold rush. The WP&YR is a narrow, 3-foot gauge railway that connected the port of Skagway Alaska and Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon. It is the most heavily used tourist railroad in existence today and carries over 400,000 passengers each year during the May until October season. The railroad is isolated and not connected to any other system. The original line was over 110 miles in length but the most commonly used section today is the first 40 miles between Skagway and Bennett Station, although plans are to add some excursions to Carcross, Yukon. Originally the intention was to link Skagway at the northernmost end of the Inside Passage to the gold mining districts of the Klondike. British investment was secured and construction was started in 1898 and finished in July 1900. Three companies managed the railroad known as the WP&YR: - The Pacific & Arctic Railway from Skagway to the British Columbia border near White Pass. - The BC-Yukon Railway from White Pass to the BC Yukon border near Pennington. - The British Yukon Railroad to Whitehorse. Traffic on the WP&YR dropped significantly after the gold rush with the severe decline in the population of the Yukon Territories. Tourist trade saved the WP&YR as they began promoting recreational travel off the steamships that stopped in Skagway. The Second World War brought about the need to build the Alaska Highway linking Alaska through the Yukon and BC to the lower 48 states. The WP&YR was the best way to move supplies to the highway site. The US Army leased the railroad from 1942 to 1946 and ran multiple daily supply trains during that period. After the war, increased mining activities in the Yukon maintained the rail traffic to 1982. Numerous spur lines were opened and closed to mines in the district. The WP&YR pioneered some of the first transshipment of containers from ships to rail during the post-war period. In 1982 extremely depressed metal prices forced the mines to close and the railroad shut down in October, 1982. However by 1988 increased cruise ship traffic to Skagway prompted the WP&YR to reopen in 1988 and traffic has increased every year. The WP&YR rolling stock consists of approximately 20 diesel-electric locomotives, 2 steam engines and 70 antique and replica parlor car type coaches. 11 diesel-electric locomotives are ALCO 251A's built by GE between 1954 and 1966, and 9 are ALCO 251D's built by ALCO between 1969 and 1982. The two steam locomotives are Engine #73 which is a fully restored 1947 Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado class unit and recently rebuilt Engine #69 which is a Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive originally built for WP&YR in 1907. The parlor cars are antique or replicas of antique coaches with an average age of 50 years and with an average of approximately 40 seats per carriage. The parlor cars are named after lakes and rivers in Alaska, Yukon and BC and the oldest car is Lake Emerald which was built in 1883. The future of the WP&YR railroad looks promising with the continued increase in cruise ship traffic visiting Skagway. I urge all readers to visit Skagway and travel on one of the most scenic and historic train routes in operation today. Information on the schedules and fares can be found at whitepassrailroad/schedule. html.
