    That's it. I had to have it. If I had to go to 10 different stores, line up at 4 AM on "Black Friday" or go online and bid far more than my pocketbook would allow, the hot toy of the season was going to be mine. I pictured my daughter's face opening it up. It would be the picture-perfect moment when at last she would tear open the toy she had begged for all season. A year has now passed. Now what was that toy? I honestly can't remember… and I'm sure she can't either. Now rewind to that same Christmas. I also made her a pillow with her own name on it. I do remember carefully selecting the fabrics. I remember feeling so "gitty" when I found just the right color choices that would coordinate with her bedroom so perfectly. Everything that made her room hers, I found! I remember the night I put her to bed and ran to my sewing room so excited to get started on my project. I would hope she'd love it as much as I loved making it for her. Watching her elation as she opened that gift was 10 times more enchanting than seeing her set aside the "had-to-have" toy a few short hours later. She was captivated by the pillow, and happy to ask, "Mommy! Mommy! Did you make this for ME?" The "D-I-Y" phenomenon is here and more and more people are choosing to give handmade gifts to those on their gift-giving lists! So why give handmade this holiday season? 1.Because It's Cost-Effective More often than not, you can make something for less. Of course there are exceptions, but this works well when you have a holiday budget to stick to. I recently made some chalk-board mats for my nieces and nephews. Can you believe I was able to make 9 of them out of 1 yard of fabric? Talk about a bargain! Another friend of mine made purses for all of her girlfriends for their gift exchange. I also like to write down my gift-giving list early, and then think of how I can make several of the same gifts for a group of people - such as favorite teachers. In assembly-line fashion, I can purchase all I need at once, lay out my materials, and thrust into the project at hand. Before you know it, I'm finished with something that was not only enjoyable for me to do, but cost very little in relation to purchasing something at a store. 2.Because It Can Be Personalized When I make a gift for someone, I always keep in mind what is important to them or about them. Whether it's a name on the gift, remembering their favorite colors, or making something of a sentimental nature, a handmade gift is one way of showing you care. Handmade gifts can be very unique and different. Countless times I've been so impressed with those who can create the same project, yet individualize each one to make them special to the one they are giving it to. Whether it's something that has been knit, sewn, painted, or glued, you can make the right gift for just the right person. 3.Because It Can Become a Treasure I still have a crocheted blanket my grandmother made for me when I was a child. Seeing this reminds me of her love and dedication to our family. I can imagine the excitement she must have felt while making it. In retrospect, I don't know if I ever showed my full extent of gratitude when that gift was given. Oftentimes, that may be the case. But looking back, my heart is filled with thanksgiving as I recognize the hours that must have gone into something so extraordinary. Do I still purchase gifts for family and friends from the stores? Of course I do. But while acknowledging that making handmade gifts does take more time, for me giving a gift that is handmade is very fulfilling to both the giver and receiver.

         
    Why i chose breast augmentation

     

    Breast augmentation had never been a top concern for me. Ditto for cosmetic surgery. It had always seemed like a cop out. As if the people who went under the knife for it did it because they were insecure. Not only that, but they thought it would be the "be all and end all" for them. In other words, they'd still feel insecure after the fact because they hadn't dealt with the real problem. Their own self-image. Then one day, I saw some interviews with women who had done it. It really blew me away. They weren't insecure. They were happy for having done it. It wasn't like they felt they HAD to. They wanted to regardless of what other people thought or said. So, it was their OWN decision. They knew the risks, had heard all the stuff in the past in the news about the safety of implants. It's hard to describe how it felt to hear them. It felt... And so, that's when I realized that all my negative obsessing about breast augmentation was wrong, a cover up. I was trying avoid my own interest in the procedure by putting it down. This isn't to say that it's the same for everyone. Nor do I want anyone to think that they SHOULD do it just because they're "interested". I had to think a long time about this, and feel comfortable knowing that it was what I wanted. After preparing myself, I then went on the mythical quest for the perfect surgeon. What I found was a lot of information about all the different ways breast augmentation could be done. On top of that, the different kinds of implants. As well, the legal restrictions around certain types of implants - namely the silicone-filled variety. The other thing I found was how different the surgeons and/or clinics marketed themselves. There were a lot of ads that would reaffirm everything I thought was wrong about it. Fortunately, there were some that actually sounded intelligent, i. e. not some turn-of-the-century hawker selling snake oil. Talking with these people, who actually sounded like they cared, I was finally able to make a decision. They also answered the endless questions and concerns I had about the different kinds of breast augmentation. Not only the pros and cons of each technique but what had to be done afterwards to make sure that the implants wouldn't rupture. Although it took a while, in the end I was glad I did my homework first. But more importantly, I'm glad for having seen those women talk about their own experiences with breast augmentation.

In the United States, for example, most women start experiencing menopause from their late 40s. Many other women, start experiencing menopause in their early 50s. While some women happily and patiently look forward to it, others get scared of it. For those who look forward to it, they could be tired of monthly menstruation and look forward to menopause knowing they would no longer menstruate. This is especially true for ladies who always have painful menstrual periods. For those who get scared of it, they could still be expecting to bear children and so don't want menopause since it will signal an end to child bearing. Whichever category you fall into, menopause signals the end of your ability as a lady to bear children. Menopause in most women is preceded by 10 to 15 years during which the ovaries gradually stop producing eggs and sex hormones. This period is also known as the climacteric period. Instead of worrying stiff about when menopause will start and the symptoms, it’s more important to start preparing your mind and body for it.     Why do people wear wigs? There are several reasons and the most relevant reason is to hide a bald head and show a stylish, fashionable and aesthetic profile. Wigs are mostly made of horse-hair, human hair or synthetic hair. Wig is a short form for the 17th century English word “periwig”. Actors wear wigs to get the nearest resemblance to the character they portray. Wigs have been used since ancient times. Egyptians used wigs to protect their clean shaven head from the sun. Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians and Assyrians also used wigs for style and to cover their head. Wigs contain the cap which is its base, where the hair is attached. Caps are available in different types and hair is stuck to the cap using numerous different techniques. Hair is attached in wefts on the wig. Hair strings doubled over and closely sewn together in longer strands is the process by which wigs are made. Wigs made from human hair have a very natural look. Depending upon the personal tastes, the human hair wigs can be colored, styled, cut or “permed”. These wigs need lot of care and they are more expensive. Similar to human hair, the wigs are also to be cleaned with shampoo, dried, and conditioned to preserve its natural look and feel. People who do not have the time or inclination to do these chores have the option of a synthetic blend wig resembling human hair. Most of the good quality synthetic wigs are identical to human hair wigs. They are not very expensive and need very little care and maintenance. The synthetic wig retains the curl, wave, texture and volume due to the “memory” of the monofilament fiber hair. They get damaged when hair dryers, curling irons or hot rollers are used to get a wave. What should be the correct size of the wig? Most of the wigs fit a head circumference of 21.5 inches to 22.5 inches. The wig should be worn on the natural hairline, nearly four fingers above the eyebrows. In the back, pull down the wig to the natural hairline. Using the elastic tab and Velcro provided in the back, adjust the wig to get a comfortable and secure fit. Nearly 10 to 30 percent of excess hair is provided in most wigs so it is advisable to avail the services of a professional hair stylist to fine tune the wig so that it suits your features and gives a stylish look. The wigs should be stored on a wig stand or a mannequin when it is not used so that the shape is properly preserved. Perspiration, environment and lifestyle are some of the factors to be taken into account when deciding the frequency of cleaning the wig. Normally it is advisable to clean the wig after a fortnight’s use. Strictly follow the guidelines given by the manufacturer, for cleaning and conditioning the wig. There are special styling accessories such as conditioners, hair sprays and shampoos to keep the wig clean. Cool water should be used to rinse the wig after the conditioning process. Leave the wig to dry naturally and avoid scrubbing the wig.

         
    Winter facial skin care tips

     

    Winter is here and the frost is not only nipping at your nose but the whole face. Fortunately, with a facial skin care routine that meets your exact skin care needs you can be on your way to healthy, radiant skin tone. YOUR SKIN IS DRY OR SENSITIVE IF IT: • Stings or burns when skin-care products are used • Is easily irritated • Sometimes appears red and inflamed • Feels itchy, dry, rough and flaky Facial skin care for dry skin: Regular bath soaps clean well but are powerfully alkaline and irritating for both dry and sensitive skin. Clear soaps containing glycerin and alcohol may also be too drying. So, as an alternative of soap, dermatologists suggest a soap-free, sensitive skin cleansers. If your skin is very dry or sensitive, you may need to alternate a washable lotion with a sensitive-skin bar. After cleansing dry skin, apply a moisturizer that is light, hypoallergenic, preservative-free, all-purpose and water based. For extremely dry skin, moisturize with petroleum jelly or an oil-based lotion with 20 percent urea. After cleansing sensitive skin, apply a light, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free moisturizer, like Eucerin. To check your tolerance of the product, dab the moisturizer behind your ears for the first few days. YOUR SKIN IS NORMAL IF IT: • Is usually smooth and supple • Is generally clear/blemish-free • Appears neither dry nor oily Facial skin care for normal skin: You’re one of those lucky people whose face can take some abuse and still bounce back, looking fresher than ever. Almost any cleanser (from regular bath soap to sensitive-skin bars) will work for you. If you need a moisturizer — some people with normal skin don’t! — choose a light, hypoallergenic, preservative free, all-purpose, water-based moisturizer after washing. YOUR SKIN IS OILY IF IT: • Has enlarged pores or blackheads • Appears shiny and feels greasy Facial skin care for oily skin: Regular bath soap, morning and night, is fine for cleansing — your skin actually benefits from the drying effect of strongly alkaline bath soaps. If necessary, use an astringent pad at midday. Because your skin is naturally oily, you may not need a moisturizer. But if you do, choose one that’s noncomedogenic (won’t cause acne) and either oil-free or water-based — Neutrogena or Aveeno, for example. YOUR SKIN IS COMBINATION IF IT: • Is oily on your forehead, nose or chin • Is dry on your cheeks and around your eyes Facial skin care for combination skin: Dermatologists recommend one of two cleansing routines for women with combination skin. You can wash with a gentle facial cleanser in the morning and use an alcohol-free astringent on oily areas later in the day. Or wash with a soap-free cleanser on dry areas and with regular bath soap on oily areas. Treat dry patches as dry skin, then apply a water-based or oil-free noncomedogenic moisturizer to your entire face. Skin care tips for every type of skin: No matter how oily, dry or sensitive your skin, always clean gently. Use warm (not hot) water and your fingertips (not a wash cloth). Rinse well. Then use a towel to pat (not rub) your face dry. Wash your face no more than once or twice a day. After patting skin dry, apply moisturizer to skin while it’s still damp to ensure that it is absorbed. Unless your moisturizer provides protection from damaging sun rays, consider applying a light sunscreen as well.

         
    Winterize prepare your skin for winter

     

    Dry, itchy and cracked skin goes hand in hand with winter season. Change in temperatures and humidity, indoor heating, hot showers and bath remove important oils and moisture from the skin causing dryness, flakiness and cracking of the skin. If you think, winter equals to dry cracked skin with no or very less preventative measures, think again. Read on for some TLC for your winter weary skin - - Bathing - Hot water bath breaks body oil that is easily washable. If you cannot avoid hot bath, add oils like almond, sesame or other bath oils to your water. Alternatively you can add milk to your bath water. It restores the oils leaving it soft and supple. - Cleanse & Exfoliate - Before you begin your bath, exfoliate your skin with loofah. Avoid strong base ingredients and anti bacterial products; opt for gentle moisturizing revitalizing products. - Drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water every day. By keeping your skin well hydrated, your skin will not suffer from dryness, rashes and itchiness. Avoid excessive usage of caffeine beverages that strips moisture from the skin. - Moisturize properly and your skin will remain soft and supple all through winter. Use moisturizer that has the necessary vitamins and hydration properties for your skin. One should apply moisturizer within a minute or so of having a shower or bath. Damp skin traps the water in the upper layers and decreases dryness and itching. - Keep petroleum jelly nearby. Dab some of it on problem areas to seal the moisture and heal the dry skin. You can rub it on all the dry areas of the body. It is very soothing backup substitute. - If possible, try taking a multi vitamin pill that has good dose of vitamins B, C & E. It will help your skin as well as ward off common cold. Avoid overdose multivitamin pills for adverse effects. - Use sunscreen in winter as you would in summer. Ideal sunscreen is one which is light, oil free and has SPF 15. - If you can afford to going to spas for luxurious and rejuvenating treatments for winter weary skin, there is nothing like it. Spa and other hydration treatments super hydrate your skin.

         
    Wise woman ways to boost your energy

     

    : Almost every woman has, at one time or another, felt so fatigued she wanted to cry. But for some women, and for a variety of reasons - including menopause, caring for a new-born, working odd hours, chronic anxiety, and poverty, to name only a few - fatigue is a constant, not an occasional, problem. Stimulants don't really give us more energy, though they are what many women turn to when they feel too tired. Stimulants create false energy, leaving us more exhausted at deeper levels. One more cup of coffee, one more soft drink, one more jolt of fear increases energy, to be sure. But these choices also deplete our bones of their minerals, weaken our core energy, and prevent truly restful, restorative sleep. Even herbal stimulants, like cayenne and guarana, are, well, stimulants. They push us too hard and erode our long-term health. Are there ways to boost energy that are effective and healthy? My guide, Grandmother Growth, gave me some ideas of how to help myself when I feel bone-tired. And I gathered together the best remedies I know, plus the wisdom of my Wise Woman friends, so you can help yourself too, when you are too weary for words. "Fall into my arms and sleep," offers Grandmother Growth. "You don't have to make things happen; they will happen on their own. Let me hold you. Let go. Don't resist. Rest. You are working hard. You are delving deep and changing yourself. Of course you are tired. Change is hard work. Rest in my strong arms. Let go. Give your weariness to me. Let go of all that worries you. Surrender yourself into my strength. Take courage from me. Let me support you. Let me ease you. Let go." Extreme fatigue indicates a profound need to do nothing. Ask family and friends to give you a day totally off ... and take it! Barricade yourself in your room if need be (or, like the cartoon character Sylvia, in the bathroom). BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF The internal processes that occur during puberty, motherhood, menopause or any other profound change in your life require tremendous amounts of energy. Even if you provide yourself with very high quality nutrients and use your energy wisely, you may still feel unreasonably tired. Many cultures offer newborns and moms a quiet, alone month or more, allow menopausal women to retire for a year or more while they Change, and give grieving parents/partners/children/friends time off from responsibility. If yours doesn't, if you can't, at least be gentle with yourself. Give yourself a break: every hour, take a 60-second break. Breathe deeply; stand up and stretch; drink a glass of water or some herbal infusion. Schedule a regular time to meditate or take a nap every day. Small frequent rests help more than an extra hour of sleep; but do both if you can. Set aside an hour a week to do something indulgent for yourself: a long soak in a hot bath, a manicure, a walk alone in a beautiful place. Nourish yourself and you will have more energy to give to others. Treat yourself to a massage once a month. (It need not break your budget; find someone willing to barter for a skill or product you have.) A skilful massage releases tension, helping you get more benefit from your sleep and downtime, thus liberating more energy and helping you begin the upward spiral into increased vitality. In addition to at least one really good meal a day, eat high quality snacks hourly. Though it seems contrary, St. Joan's wort (Hypericum) tincture relaxes the nerves yet increases energy. A dose is 25-30 drops several times a day, including before bed. You'll sleep better, ache less, and wake up with more energy and a brighter outlook on life. Warming herbs such as ginger and cinnamon increase energy (but may increase hot flashes, too). Make a tea with 1 cup/250 ml boiling water and 1/2-1 teaspoon (1-2 grams) of the powder of any one of these. Very tired women need more fuel, that is, more fat, in their diets, and best if the fats are also natural sources of vitamin E: avocados, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, tahini, and olive oil are good food sources.

    Herbs rich in vitamin E include nettle, seaweeds, dandelion, and watercress. B vitamins build energy. Find them in whole grains, organ meats, sweet potatoes, avocados, egg yolks, fish, and whey.
