I have often drawn off of the experiences of great ones in history when I feel the man upstairs is putting me through my paces. These are individuals who simply refused to give up no matter what cross they had to bear. Here are a few I'd like to share with you: Thomas Edison failed thousands of times in finally realizing his invention of the incandescent electric light bulb and many others. In fact he held a press conference in which one reporter bellowed out "Mr. Edison, what does it feel like to fail thousands of times"? To which Edison dutifully replied," Young man, I can see that you are just starting out so let me share this with you. I did not fail a thousand times over and over but I successfully found thousands of ways that did not work " ! I love that quote and always will. Michael Jordan-air highness - was actually cut from his high school basketball team yet he went on to re-write the record books and indelibly stamp his legacy on a game that may never witness as superb an athlete. Abraham Lincoln failed SIX times in both senate and presidential races before he finally won out. Given his incredible impact on American history, can you imagine if he succumbed early. Henry Ford went bankrupt on FIVE occasions before he hit his successful stride. How much longer would we have been in the horse and cart era if he had walked away premature to his success? Don Johnson was in Hollywood for 11 years working as a waiter doing two-bit acting stints before he finally nailed the audition that launched him into superstardom. Most of us will well recall "MIAMI VICE". So, when the going gets tough, or even very rough-just draw on the trials and tribulations of those that have walked before you. Your site will probably get listed on a PR3 or PR4 page. Sometimes, your site will get listed within a few days otherwise it may even take a month. But it can also happen that the free site never gets around to listing your site. The options in the free category are numerous and one can opt for an open directory project such as DMOZ or a free directory like JoeAnt. Apart from main directories there are niche directors that are specific to one segment only like health, alternative medicine, and so on. Remember, every listing will add to the website’s Google PageRank and free directories of standing do provide a steady rate of referral traffic. Many free directories have editors who do the vetting for no remuneration; this allows the directory to include hundreds of sites at little or no cost. Directories like DMOZ are used by Google and other search engines as databases; this means that your web site will automatically be listed in several major search engines and directories. A paid directory is one that offers premium service which includes faster approvals. Most paid directories deliver high quality traffic or a good PageRank. Less crowded than free directories, your site stands a good chance of being listed on a higher PR page. Some directories like Yahoo charge a fee for considering a site for inclusion. This is towards costs of reviewing your site and the fee is a recurring expense to be paid yearly. However, there are exceptions where non-profit sites are reviewed free but there is a special path for submission of such sites. Other sites charge a one-time inclusion fee. The costs of paid directories can vary from US $ 25.00 (one time fee) to US$ 299 (annual recurring fee). Whether you should opt for a paid or free inclusion depends on your needs. • Consider what is your goal? • Determine how much immediate exposure your website needs? • Is there time to wait for a free inclusion or would you benefit from a quick paid inclusion? • Is there budget provision for paid inclusion: pay per click or recurring yearly expenses? • Do you have time to assume the role of a reviewer and vet your directory before a free inclusion? • Or, would it be more feasible to pay for a professional editor to review the web site? • Learn how each directory is organized and what its guidelines are. • Surf the net and find out where your competitors are listed. As comfortable as you and I might be using the Internet, it is really only in its infancy. As huge as Google is, it was only created in 1998. Think about that for minute. Google is less than 10 years old. My, how far we have come! As the Internet continues to grow, how web marketing will evolve is a much discussed subject. There is little doubt the future is bright. As more people join up with the Internet revolution, e-commerce continues to grow. Still, one can’t help but acknowledge Internet users are becoming more sophisticated, particularly as a younger generation moves into adulthood and gets issued credit cards. Web marketing is currently a bit of a mess. Remnants of the old, such as banner ads and email marketing, are arguably one their way out. Banner ads produce horrific click through rates because people are wary of getting stuck on a site they can’t get away from. Email marketing is tainted by problems such as spam, phishing scams and identity theft concerns. Personally, I delete all email that isn’t from a person I know. It is just too risky. The dominant web marketing models now are pay-per-click advertising and search engine optimization. Search engine optimization will be around as long as people use search engines. The promise of free traffic is simply too glorious to ignore. Since it is fairly difficult to commit fraud in search engine optimization, it is difficult to see any future legal issues threatening it. That being said, people will always find ways to bend the rules. Pay-per-click advertising [“ppc”] has a less clear future. The primary problem is click fraud. Click fraud occurs when a ppc ad is artificially clicked. The only intention of the clicker is to cost the advertiser money. Some estimate the percentage of fraudulent clicks on ppc platforms runs as high as forty percent. If true, this theoretically means you could take forty percent of your advertising budget, use it as toilet paper and get the same sales results. Pretty scary, eh? So, what do the next 10 years hold in store for marketing on the web? In my personal view, search engine optimization will remain the dominant online marketing method. PPC will also continue, but will be modified into something used to conquer click fraud. I also think information publishing in the form of free copyright articles will become more and more dominant. Combined, these three platforms represent the future of web marketing. Of course, nobody could have foreseen the explosion of EBay ten years ago, so we may all be surprised by where things stand in five or ten years. Considering Google is less than 10 years old, nobody can really say what might pop up tomorrow.

They can be visible to your website visitors, or invisible to them so that only you can see. A web counter is a very basic addition to your website that simply registers the number of people who visit any given page on your site. Of course, showing this isn’t exactly the most professional way to run a website. Sure, they’re alright for personal pages, but for a business that is trying to develop a good reputation and make a good impression, this probably isn’t really the way to go. With the statistical package from your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you’ll be able to have a look at a log of every visit your website has received. This will be available to you in the form of either a webpage or a graphic for your analysis. The information is often registered in raw NCSA combined log file format, which is rather challenging to use for the average user. It is full of complicated coding that must be deciphered for each individual “hit” that your webpage has received. If you know what you’re doing, however, this method does indeed provide you with a good amount of information, such as the way that people are getting to your website (for example, by way of a search engine or a link from another site) and what they are doing at your site once they have arrived. If you are using a good quality ISP, then you will likely have a freeware version of a popular statistical analysis package available to you. There are many good ones from which you can choose, and you’ll find the results very useful. You can have your ISP produce a daily, weekly, monthly (etc) report for you to use. They can either be posted on a webpage for you, or emailed directly into your inbox. You’ll need to contact your ISP to find out exactly what services they offer in this regard. If that doesn’t work for you, if you want a better detailed report, or if your ISP simply doesn’t provide that service, then you may wish to purchase a web traffic analysis software program. There are tons of these programs available at affordable prices that will provide you with a broad range of analysis options for the traffic you receive on your website. To use these programs, you simply need to download access logs from your ISP using an FTP program. You’ll need to ask your ISP about the directory in which those logs can be found. The software will then parse (interpret) the raw log file information one line at a time to provide you with results in various combinations and formats for your use. Though the more high-end programs can cost over $5 thousand, there are many software packages that are available to us “normal folk” with varying degrees of options and abilities, but at much more affordable prices. You can easily obtain a good quality software package at around $300. So why do you need these stats so badly for your web marketing? The fact of the matter is that they give you a goal for your marketing. They show you: » Which web pages on your site are most popular » Which pages on your site are least popular » Who is visiting your website » Which browsers they are using to view your website » Which search engines are sending the most visitors » Which banner ads are sending you the most visitors » Where the errors and bad links may exist on your website.
