    The power of laughter

Did you realise that laughter can heal? The experience of laughing has been proven to be an extremely potent tool for self healing. If you have watched the DVD “The Secret” then you will have seen a very good example of this. A woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer laughed herself back to health. She watched funny shows and wouldn’t allow any stress into her life. At the end of three months the cancer had totally disappeared! Why and how did this happen? Is it really possible to laugh your way back from sickness to health? Well it has been observed by the medical profession that when you laugh, there are certain chemicals released in your body that relax you and allow your body to do what it does best – repair itself! However, when you allow stress to take over and live your life from a very serious standpoint your body does not release these highly beneficial chemicals, your muscles tense and even natural bodily functions like digestion become harder for your body to regulate. As your body has to try that much harder to regulate your normal functions it takes its toil and aging can occur. So if you try to see the funny side of things in life (and there always is one) you are actually helping yourself stay healthy and young. Using humour is not just great for your physical health; it can also keep you healthy emotionally and mentally. The best way top stay happy and humorous is to redirect your focus and thus change your perception of things. If you constantly dwell on feelings of negativity you are not allowing yourself to see the humorous side of life and are robbing your body of much needed chemicals and a state of relaxation. Here are some hints if you want to take advantage of the positive effects of humour. 1. Do things that you really enjoy and find funny. 2. Watch comedies that make you laugh. 3. Read a magazine or funny book. 4. Repeat the jokes you like to friends and family. Their laughter will have you laughing again. 5. Share funny stories that have happened to you. 7. Seek out the company of people you find funny. 8. Ask friends and family to tell you about their funny experiences. You should to have a good belly laugh at least once a day. Why not laugh your way to a healthy youthful body?

The power of our subconscious mind

Have you ever fully appreciated that marvelous tool for success that each and every one of us has at our command? It is our mind. Theodore Roosevelt “All the resources we need are in the mind.” In the novel “Terminal Man” by Michael Crichton, it mentions that at that time (1972) the largest and most expensive computer had the same number of circuits as the brain of an ant. To make a computer with the capacity of the human brain would require the size of a huge skyscraper. Its energy demand would be the equivalent of a city of a half a million. I know computers have come a long way since 1972 but it shows the tremendous capacity of the human mind. Did you know our conscious mind is only one-sixth of our brain’s thinking and power? Our subconscious mind represents five-sixths of our thinking and power. The whole mind, conscious and subconscious, possesses the power to solve any problem that may come up, or provide the necessary ways and means through which we can achieve our ends. The conscious mind holds only about 7 pieces of information in short-term memory. Your sub-conscious mind, however, stores all the knowledge you have ever acquired. Everything you have ever read, heard, thought or imagined is held within its immense memory. Brain researchers estimate that your unconscious mind outweighs the conscious on a scale of ten million to one. This is the source of your hidden, natural genius. In other words, this part of you is much smarter than you think you are. This is where the great artists, writers, and poets to get their inspiration. Albert Einstein “The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you, and you don’t know how or why.” “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” The subconscious mind is useful in two ways. The first way involves receiving information, solving problems, and receiving inspiration. The second way deals with programming your mind to supercharge your confidence, your self-image, and your desired beliefs. This can take a little time at first but like many things gets easier with practice. Programming your subconscious works best through visualization. Pictures and symbols are by far the most effective way of impressing your subconscious. Speaking of symbols and pictures, this is why dreams are largely symbolic in nature. While you sleep your mind processes information and presents it back in the form of symbolic pictures. What’s great about your subconscious mind is that it never rests. Whatever goal or problem you give your subconscious, it will work on continually, day or night. Whatever you think and ponder about deeply with strong emotion makes a strong impression on your subconscious. This is why you also need to be careful. Excessive worrying and negative self-talk can also make strong impressions. You want your subconscious mind to be a goal achieving, success mechanism, not a failure mechanism.

    The power of self esteem

Why are there so many women haunted by a low self-esteem ? I have shared many thoughts through out my articles on feelings, jealousy, worries, fears, and self-esteem. Every day I receive mail from all over the world from women suffering from a lack of inner power to get through the day, due to a low self-esteem. It does not only affect their relationships at home, it also follows them into their work place, where they are being suffocated from a lack of confidence. In the work place the power of self-esteem needs to be high so that ones confidence can guide them through actions such as: important decision making, dealings with an opposite sex boss, office politics, other staff members trying to gain on your efforts, talking to clients or customers on the phone or in person, dealing with rejection regarding your work, and even things as simple as fitting into the social side of your job (making friends). People deal with this everyday, and when they are suffering inside, their power of self-esteem is definitely very low. Then they still have to deal with the rest of their day. It's no wonder the corner bar looks like a nice hide-away. There are two parts to the meaning of the power of self-esteem: 1: self-acceptance, which is an appreciation of ones worth as a human being. 2: self-confidence, the knowing that you are competent enough to use your gifts to their fullest. To have the power of self-esteem, one must be able to feel both emotions in a positive manner. Through ones life, they have learned through negative experiences to doubt themselves, to fear criticism and ridicule. They have also learned to cut themselves down at a glance of someone else they deem to be richer, prettier, or smarter. They eventually lose the power of self-esteem. We can run through our past, over and over and over again. We can bang our heads on the wall, we can create eating disorders in ourselves, we can cut up our bodies just to feel something, or we can even turn away from everyone we love and cherish for fear they may just find that one tiny keyhole to unlock our self-pity trap we are in. We can do just about anything to not find the strength to gain back the power of self-esteem. It is after all the easy road to take, is it not? To fail, to cry out for sympathy, to get attention, even if it is the wrong attention. I have learned one very important thing in all my work through helping women gain the power of self-esteem, no matter how many times you see someone prettier, skinnier, richer, taller, smarter, happier, better spoken, or with a colgate smile you envy, the sun will come up tomorrow with or without you. Your worries and self-pity caused by your weakness to control the power of self-esteem that is inside of you. It is waiting to be used as the gift that you were born with. You can spend hours hurting and suffering inside because you are not, or cannot be who you think you should have been. You must stop allowing yourself to feel threatened by the world. When your mind feels threatened, it will automatically react to protect you. This is where your thoughts and your actions collide. Confusion becomes part of your thinking now and this is when the negative emotions take over fast and furious. Into the pit, you go. The ability to shift your focus to positive mental thoughts during stress is the most important link needed to escape any emotional trap we fall into. The power of self-esteem is all about your first thought and how you deal with it. It is at that split second that you have to decide to think positively or just plain toss it out of your head. Tossing negative thoughts is something I have mentioned before,"HABITS". Your goal is to offset the mind-body reaction to the stresses we are constantly forced to deal with through society. The power of self-esteem can be gained if you really want it. I know that I have filled my website and my articles with everything from A-Z on steps to get you there. Women are still in constant belief that only over weight woman, or not so pretty woman (by society`s standards) are at risk of losing the power of self-esteem. Again I repeat this over and over, please read ,"Why Do Pretty Girls Cry". It's all there. I speak of the pretty girls, and society`s way of convincing you that only ugly girls cry. I know that is a harsh statement, but I am trying to get through to every person on earth that the power of self-esteem is in each and everyone of us. We are all born with it. Yes we all have our reasons for our weaknesses. OK, now that we know that, lets move on. How can we fight off the negative thoughts that bring us down? Through my thoughts in my website and blogs, you can educate yourself and learn to improve your thinking habits. It is possible, but not easy at all. That is the reason so many of you fail to gain the power of self-esteem. You have no consistent learning strength. You fear anything that takes time and dedication. Then why is it that you will search endlessly through every search engine for ways to get you through this hell you are in, pay a nonsensical amount of money to a therapist to tell you what you already know, cut yourself, or make your body suffer through eating disorders, not to mention put yourself and your friends in so much turmoil over your inability to create better mind over matter habits? Can you see what I see there? I see that you do have the power of self-esteem. You do have the patience, the will and the strength to shine. You do not need to worry about anything. You choose to worry and you allow the negative thoughts. Ask yourself the next time you feel threatened, "If I do not stop this negative thought, will it change who I am, or make me that of which I envy?" NOT and NO!!!!! Please realize this, only you are suffering in that pit. Only you are losing out on all the smiles that life has right at your reach. You are in control of your happiness. You can toss off all those comments or remarks. You can turn your back on someones else's weakness or problems that may cause you to feel less than who you really are. Let them suffer in their own stupidity. No one can threaten you, but you. Do this also when you feel the challenge of negative versus positive thinking: BREATHE DEEPLY IDENTIFY THE NEGATIVE NOW THINK THE POSITIVE ACT UPON IT BREATHE AGAIN DEEPLY PAT YOURSELF FOR WINNING THAT WAR NOW SMILE YOU NOW HAVE, "THE POWER OF SELF-ESTEEM! Trust me here, the more you create this habit, my friends, the easier it becomes. Like anything else worth having in life, it is not going to come easy, but it does come and it is oh so sweet!!!!!! ********************************* "You cannot stop the birds of sorrow from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building their nests in your hair." -Chinese Proverb Dorothy Lafrinere Owner/Operator Website - womensselfesteem Weblog - justblogme/Dorothy Forum - womenselfesteem. proboards29.com email - [email protected]

The power of thoughts on plants and water

Copyright 2006 Mary Desaulniers My friend Debra believes fervently in the power of thoughts. When she wants something, she fixes its image in her mind, nourishes the thought daily with expectation and gratitude. Then she waits. Invariably, whether it takes 2 days, 2 months or 2 years, she gets what she desires. She has shown repeatedly that there is power in thoughts. What she has fixed in her mind invariably appears—in one form or another—a mantel clock that is a perfect replica of one she saw in a magazine, a parking spot that miraculously opens up in a blizzard, the ideal companion for a lonely, divorced friend, a perfect location for her husband’s new business. Her life is filled with the blessings of a pure and gentle heart, one that knows how to ask and wait for it to be given. The more I am in touch with her, the less surprised I am about her clear and prescient way of receiving gifts from the universe. After all, we have seen a pronounced paradigm shift in the last 25 years, a shift in the way we perceive the world and our role within it. We now recognize that there is not only power in our thoughts, but power in the thoughts of the natural kingdom. As humans, we have arrogantly secluded ourselves from the plant, animal and mineral worlds, thinking that we have been the only species privileged with thought and power. Not so any more, according to two books — Masaro Emoto’s “The Hidden Messages of Water”(2004): and Cleve Backster’s “Primary Perception: Biocommunication with Plants, Living Foods and Human Cell”( 2003)-- both released within the last 3 years, in tune with a growing recognition that we are no longer the only sentient species in the universe. These books introduce us not only the secret life of water, but the secret thoughts of plants. Masaru Emoto, a renowned Japanese researcher and independent thinker, shocked and inspired the world with his high-speed photographs of water structure shot at the moment of freezing. What these photographs showed was that water responded directly to human thoughts, words and even music. Crystals formed in frozen water changed their formation and behavior in response to specific thoughts or words directed at them. Water blessed with benevolence and love, for example, displayed brilliant and symmetrical patterns. Water, exposed to negative thoughts and words, assumed asymmetrical, incomplete and despondent shapes. Emoto has come to see that water is not an inanimate substance; it is able to “copy” and “memorize” information. Memory is alive and pulsing though the entire universe; the rock in our garden is not just a rock; it carries layers of memories striated like a cartilege beneath its surface—all the more reason for us to give it reverence. Our own memories are carried in our cells; these memories are formed by the words we speak and the thought we entertain in our minds. Emoto says,” In Japan, it is said that words of the soul reside in a spirit called...the ‘spirit of words’ and the act of speaking words has the power to change the world.” If water can respond to human thoughts, so can plants, claims Cleve Backster in his book. Considered a leading authority in polygraph and lie detection, Backster attached electrodes from his polygraph machine to a plant stalk in order to measure the time needed for water to travel up the plant to reach the leaves. In the process of this experiment, he discovered that the plant could respond to human thought; a thought of burning the leaves of the plant registered wild and erratic movement in the polygraph chart. This was the beginning of his lifelong interest in understanding the cellular communication process, what he calls “Primary Perception,” the ability of plant, animal and human cells to perceive and respond at both local and nonlocal levels. Devising further experiments, he discovered that cellular memory and communication can transcend both space and time and can be measured: plants reacted to the boiling of brine shrimp in water; yogurt reacted to the death of bacteria even when these experiments were carried out miles apart. In an interview, Backster recounted a visit from a botanist to his laboratory that brought about a strange response from his plants: the graphs showed a wandering flatline that indicated the plants were in a state of shock. Prompted by their reaction, he asked his guest if she had done anything to hurt the plants she worked with.” Her response was comically in line: ”Hurt them? My dear, I roast them to get their dry weight.” Over 40 years of research has bolstered his observation: that plant, animal, even bacteria cells are sentient organisms that responded to thought or intention, engaged in a primary perception that we, of the modern, human world, seem to have forgotten. In summary, let me quote not from Sufi mystics or poets, but from one of the leading scientists and thinker of our times—physicist David Bohm whose book “Wholeness and the Implicate Order”(1980) is a major catalyst of our paradigm shift. Bohm speaks of two orders in the universe—the explicate or unfolded order of ordinary perception and the implicate or enfolded order of extraordinary perception. This is what he says: In the implicate order, “space and time are no longer the dominant factors determining the relationships of dependence or independence of different elements. Rather, an entirely different sort of basic connection of elements is possible from which our ordinary notions of space and time, along with those of separately existent material particles are abstracted as forms derived from the deeper order.” We’ve had it skewered all along. We think that what we see with our physical eyes is the whole truth. But this ordinary perception of space and time is only a derivative of the extraordinary and primary perception which we have lost—the power of thought, but which we can retrieve with a shift in our thinking and attitudes – as my friend Debra has done.

    The power of your thoughts

Throughout the ages mankind has attempted to control his world around him by many different means. In the physical world we have invented all kinds of ways to make our lives better. If you believe the bible then in the beginning everything was perfect, mankind was in need of nothing. God took care of everything, He provided food and not much else because there was no need for much else. Mankind did not even need clothes. Can you imagine that, everybody going around totally naked! Anyway if we are to believe the bible, and I do by the way , I am a Christian, mankind began to look out for themselves after the story of thru fist sin. The first item they made was clothes. Thereafter we have been constantly inventing and making anything that will make life easier for ourselves, from houses to cars, boats, airplanes, microwave etc, etc. Look around you, with every glance of the eye you will see something that mankind has made in an attempt to better out lives. That is unless you are in the middle of some untouched part of the world where man has yet to disturb and even then you are probably not naked. We must admit that as far as material things go we have come a long way. The question is, with all that we have done materially to make life better, why is it that so many people are unhappy, feel that they are not loved, many do not see any purpose in life and tragically some reach the point of ending it all in suicide. This is the question, why? There must be another aspect, another dimension to our lives that we need to be mindful of. This other realm is the spiritual, or the supernatural or whatever you want to call it, the realm of the mind. More and more we are beginning to realize that this world, this spiritual world, is what really controls us and all that we do is a result of what’s going on in the mind. The wisdom literature of the ages all point to this fact that it is not what you have on the outside that really matters, but what you have on the inside. Eastern religions do meditation and things like yoga exercises all intended to improve your state of mind. Christians believe in a life changing power coming from God that manifests itself from the inside out through prayer and meditation and a study of the bible. We can see that all of these religions seek to bring about change in our lives by changing our thoughts, what goes on in our minds. Quite recently I have come upon what is a new subject to me and that is the power of manifesting. This is where one zeroes in on our thought processes and literally attempts to bring about something, be it a physical item or an intangible such as wisdom for example, by using the power of our minds. Christians would call it a prayer of faith, where they believe for something and that God would bring it to pass. It is a very interesting topic and one in which we might all benefit if we can approach this it with an open mind. No matter your religion, or your prior spiritual beliefs there may be something in manifesting for all of us.

    The purpose of shame

Many people on a healing path have found it extremely challenging to heal their shame. Yet when you understand the purpose of shame, you will be able to move beyond it. Shame is the feeling that there is something basically wrong with you. Whereas the feeling of guilt is about DOING something wrong, shame is about BEING wrong at the core. The feeling of shame comes from the belief that, “I am basically flawed, inadequate, wrong, bad, unimportant, undeserving, or not good enough.” At some early point in our lives, most of us absorbed this false belief that causes the feeling of shame. As a result of not feeling seen, loved, valued, and understood, we developed the belief that we were not being loved because there was something wrong with us. While some children were told outright that they were not okay – that they were stupid, bad, or undeserving – other children concluded that there was something wrong with them by the way they were being treated. Once we establish our core shame belief, we become addicted to it because it serves us in two primary ways: 1) It gives us a feeling of control over other people’s feelings and behavior. As long as we believe that we are the cause of others’ rejecting behavior, then we can believe that there is something we can do about it. It gives us a sense of power to believe that others are rejecting us or behaving in unloving ways because of our inadequacy. If is our fault, then maybe we can do something about it by changing ourselves, by doing things “right.” We hang on to the belief that our inadequacy is causing others’ behavior because we don’t want to accept others’ free will to feel and behave however they want. We don’t want to accept our helplessness over others’ feelings and behavior. 2) It protects us from other feelings that we are afraid to feel, and gives us a sense of control over our own feelings. As bad as shame feels, many people prefer it to the feelings that shame may be covering up – loneliness, grief, sadness, sorrow, or helplessness over others. Just as anger may be a cover-up for these difficult feelings, so is shame. Shame is totally different than loneliness or grief or helplessness over others: While shame is a feeling that we are causing by our own false beliefs, loneliness, grief, sadness, sorrow, or helplessness over others are existential feelings - feelings that are a natural result of life. We feel grief over losing someone we love, or loneliness when we want to connect with someone or play with someone and there is no one around or no one open to connection, love or play. Many people would rather feel an awful feeling that they are causing, rather than feel the authentic painful feelings of life. If you are finding it difficult to move beyond shame, it is because you are addicted to the feeling of control that your shame-based beliefs give you – control over others’ feelings and behavior and control over your own authentic feelings. As long as having the control is most important to you, you will not let go of your false core shame beliefs. You will heal from your shame when: 1) You are willing to accept that others’ feelings and behavior have nothing to do with you. When you accept that others have free will to be open or closed, loving or unloving - that you are not the cause of their feelings and behavior and you no longer take others’ behavior personally - you will have no need to control it. When you let go of your need to control others and instead move into compassion for others, you will let go of your false beliefs about yourself that cause the feeling of shame. 2) You are willing to feel your authentic feelings rather than cover them up with anger or shame. When you learn to nurture yourself by being present with caring and compassion for your own existential feelings, you will no longer have a need to protect against these feelings with blame or shame. Control and shame are intricately tied together. When you give up your attachment to control and instead choose compassion toward yourself and others, you will find your shame disappearing.

The reality of imagery for empowerment

Copyright 2006 Marshall House Popular is the belief that imagery and imagination are not real. From my point of view, imagination is real: it exists in another dimension of reality than the physical. Imagery is not less real because it is less dense than a chair. Imagery is a set of mental pictures or images. These mental images are often used to represent objects or actions or ideas. Working with imagery, you can augment or transcend the limitations of physical reality. You can enhance and expand your conscious awareness. I have observed again and again the power of imagination and imagery to shift an uncomfortable, even painful, situation into one that is more desirable, even pleasurable. I often lead clients through a guided imagery process that empowers them to perceive meaning they did not have before the imagery and use the new wisdom for enhanced personal empowerment. When people claim they have no imagination, I ask them to tell me how to get to a particular street or well-known landmark in their city. Or I ask them what their plans are for tomorrow. Or I ask them what they had for dinner last night. When you plan a presentation for the boss or staff, you use imagery. When you consider a variety of approaches to ease a relationship, you use imagery. When you imagine a winning game of tennis or golf, you use imagery. For me, imagery and breathing are in the same category of importance: Life can not exist without either. Surely, not everyone uses imagery or imagination in the same way or to the same level of benefit, but it is the basis for creation. Form follows thought. And form follows thought, regardless of whether the thought is “positive” or “negative.” The process of imagery is impartial. However, if the images are uncomfortable, disempowering, or negative, the experiences that follow will contain a similar essence of discomfort, disempowerment, or negativity. And, as well, if the images are comfortable, empowering, or positive, the experiences that follow will contain a similar essence of comfort, empowerment, or positive characteristics. Note the difference between the concept “chair” in the carpenter’s mind and the physical “chair” in your office. The carpenter or architect or artist or manager who successfully holds an image in the mind’s eye is more likely to be able to manifest it in the physical form. The two dimensions work together; one is not better than the other. An image can exist without the physical component, but the physical component does not exist without the image. Imagery is a power that is your birthright — it comes with the human package. How you use it is your choice. All you have to do is use it with integrity and awareness, and you are empowered!

    The road to genius

If you are interested in the theories of quantum physics you will know that the very observation of certain experiments has been shown to affect their outcome. Without going too deep, the implication is that the experimenters are somehow connected to the experiment itself and no matter what they do, they are unable to prevent their influence over it. On the level of meta-physics this is evidence of our oneness with everything. Somehow we are connected to everything outside of us and have access to all there is to know but at the same time are separated by the illusion of our apparent individuality. But what is it that makes us all appear to be different. Have you ever wondered why certain people exhibit genius qualities? What is that makes a child a chess grandmaster, a great mathematician or a virtuoso musician well before their time? Is it in the power of their mind or is the secret in how they are wired? For a moment imagine we are all connected to pure consciousness through a series of channels. These channels exist because of our idea of separation and where we feel our place is in the world. Our minds have flourished on this idea of separation. All the ideas we hold about ourselves including our status, our background, our race etc have allowed the mind to take control of our lives. This control has a direct bearing on the number and strength of channels open to us. They are what makes us different and why some people are excellent in given fields whilst other people struggle. It seems that access to pure consciousness is prevented by the mind. Not only are the channels forged by the mind through its idea of separation, they are also blocked by the mind's activity. Like noise on a radio the mind interferes with the channels that keep us connected to our true self. we live by the mind and through the mind and only on occasion do we glimpse the greater powers that be. Have you noticed that the harder you think about a problem the more illusive the solution? Yet, when you still the mind or stop thinking about it the answer seems to come to you from nowhere? This is an open channel to the greater self that is free from the interference of the mind. The best solutions come from beyond the mind! You see, the mind can only give you solutions to problems based on past experience and knowledge. Most famous artists, musicians, writers and scientists have all said that their greatest ideas come from a deeper place than the mind. We all experience this on certain levels because we are all connected to the greater self through many channels. It's just that the stronger connections go hand in hand with our greater skills; those skills we practice the most! When an apprentice exceeds the master's ability where has the new found talent come from? The same can be said for those we consider genius. Somehow, at whatever age they have found a strong and open channel to the greater self. And, they keep this channel strong through constant practice. It is practice that lowers the level of mind noise and keeps the channel open to new ideas. And here is the key for the rest of us. These channels allow each and everyone of us to develop the qualities of genius. When we consistently practice something we open up the channels to the greater essence of the thing we are practicing. We tune into a greater power that makes us exceed the abilities of our mentors. We become classified as a genius. In effect we become a genius in whatever it is we practice long and hard enough at. Practice really is the road to perfection!

The self image of a baby boomer

An aging baby boomer finds many factions of self image changing on a daily basis. Mid Life becomes a point of acceptance of yourself just the way you are. It’s not an obnoxious realization. It’s not that you’re thinking that you’re better than someone else, it’s more of a meeting of the mind, ego, heart and body. It is really great to know that once you accept yourself as who you are, you can make the decision to change or alter any aspect. If there is any part of you that you physically don’t like or habits you wish you never had, you find this brave place within to do something about it. You finally understand that your thoughts create who you are. So, that little nursery rhyme that taught you that “If you believe you can, you can and if you believe you can’t, you’re right” was so true. We realize that it does not matter how long it takes to learn something new or if we do it the best. We are the only one judging . Worrying about what everyone else thinks is futile as they’re too busy re-designing their own lives to bother with ours. Baby Boomers begin to alter all aspects of our lives. The confidence and enthusiasm we can muster when we want to put our lives in order is a giant aspect of our new found, self loving image. We change our walk and our talk. Environments become an outer picture of our internal expressions. Color, style, relationships, careers and family life take on a new flow. Our friends and families also start changing as a positive and confidant environment reaps more of the same. Anything in life that is neglected will ultimately deteriorate. If you want to be successful in any area of your life, it needs to be acknowledged, nurtured and maintained. It’s time to look in the mirror and become the best friend possible to the reflection you see. If you need to, trick your mind into thinking you have a new hobby. This hobby is you. You need to put as much effort into liking and caring for yourself as you do all the important people in your life. If your best friend, mate or child had a need, you would do whatever you could to help. Give yourself permission to do the same for you. The imaginary scales inside your body that measure stress and anxiety will wonder what happened. When you start appreciating yourself and not expecting it to come from outside sources you will be amazed at how much more you enjoy your days. Keep a little booklet next to your bed and before you turn out the light, write 5 things you did today that you can compliment yourself about. Do this for two weeks and measure your stress level and I would bet you keep doing it when you see and feel the positive results. You will probably sleep better because compliments feel good to everyone and create the effect of a more positive self image. It also becomes easier to compliment others and in turn it makes your life easier as you pass that good feeling on! Enjoy!

    The shining light of hope

You will want to share something with someone today. Actually, with at least two people. One person that you know very well. And one person that you do not know well at all, and also needs to hear from you today. The one you know well needs to hear from you right now. The one you do not know at all will become evident to you when you meet them today for the first time as you go about your day. By sharing this message with both of them, you will also receive the message - which is exactly why you must share the message with them first. The message is one of HOPE. Hope is the feeling that what you want to happen... will happen. It's what keeps us going when we feel overwhelmed with problems, frustrations, and situations that seem insurmountable to us at the moment. And I am sharing HOPE with you right now. HOPE that what you want to happen... will happen. It's kind of like shining a flashlight on a dark and unknown path so you can more easily see the way to go. It's like opening the door that seems too heavy for you to open it alone. It's like giving a word of encouragement to someone who is having trouble solving a problem and under such stress they cannot see their situation clear enough to take that first step forward without your help. Right now, call that someone you know and give them HOPE. And throughout your day today, be on the lookout for that someone you don't know, who needs HOPE and shine a light on their path too. By shining a light of HOPE on their path, you will shine the light of HOPE on your own journey's path too. - - - Mark Hendricks is a business and marketing expert; sales copywriter; a joint venture specialist; software developer; and author, speaker, consultant, mentor, and success coach. The truth about hypnosis

Hypnosis can be a mystical subject. Many hypnotists shroud it in an almost metaphysical aura. This can add power to the process in many ways. However, there are many people who are not receiving the benefits of hypnosis merely because they do not understand it and are fearful of its use. In this article I have outlined some basic fundamentals of the subject so that after reading it you can make a more informed choice as to whether it is right for you or not. Hypnosis is older than you can imagine. It has been used for thousands of years. Hypnosis, or more accurately trance, is a completely natural state of mind which you move in and out of everyday. It is, in effect, an altered state of consciousness. You are neither asleep nor are you completely conscious or wide awake. A common illustration of this can be seen in the simple act of watching a movie. If you are enjoying the movie then, albeit only temporarily, your conscious mind stops processing your immediate surroundings as you emerse yourself in the world that is being presented to you on the screen. If you did not enter into a light state of trance while watching such programmes they would not give the pleasure they do. You must "lose yourself" in the characters believing them to be real people in order for the film and plot to be entertaining. We all know how bad a film is when we just can't make a connection with the characters, so we just don't find them convincing - the movie loses its hypnotic power and no longer becomes entertaining! Hypnotic trance is really just a state of deep relaxation which creates, what are called alpha and sometimes theta waves in the brain. Sometimes a subject can be in a fairly deep state of trance without even knowing it, they merely think they are very relaxed. In very rare cases the subject thinks they just fell asleep! Everyone can be hypnotized. However, all forms of Hypnosis are really self hypnosis. For in order to be hypnotized you must first be willing to hand over control to the hypnotist. Without consensual participation from a subject a hypnotist is virtually powerless. Having said that, it is extremely difficult to hypnotise a person who is very drunk, or has taken drugs (these people are already in a self-induced state of trance and directing them into a different altered state becomes almost impossible). In addition it is impossible to hypnotize someone who is adamant they don't want to undergo hypnosis! Hypnotherapy is a very specific form of hypnosis mostly used by health care professionals. As hypnosis is an extremely powerful tool for gaining access to the subconscious mind many emotionally created illnesses can be treated with hypnotherapy. In fact, as the medical profession becomes more aware of the role the mind plays in illness and healing, they have that some physical ailments, such as warts and skin disorders like eczema, can be successfully treated with hypnosis. Simply stated Hypnotherapy is an alternative therapy that uses hypnosis as a catalyst for creating inner change in a patient that may take months or even years of traditional therapy techniques. Hypnosis is completely safe! It is just an efficient quick method for entering a deep relaxed, natural state of mind and body. There are no drugs involved, no unpleasant nor unwanted side-effects and it is in no way addictive. You just need a comfortable chair, couch or bed, a willingness to relax and let-go and a trained professional or professional recording to listen to. You are always in control of yourself before, during and after a hypnosis session. If you are a particularly "good subject" you may forget the experience afterwards but during the hypnosis session you are always aware of what is happening! You cannot be made to do nor say anything that is against your moral or ethical codes not matter what Hollywood may tell you in "The Manchurian Candidate"! You will be able to hear everything that is being said to and everything that is happening around you. There are many people who actually become very sensitive to their environment. Their 5 senses become heightened and they are even more aware of the smallest of details while in trance. Of course you go back to normal upon "wakening". The vast majority of people remember everything that was said to them by the therapist when the hypnosis session is over. In fact it's a pretty good bet to say that everyone who reads this article will be in that group. It is the job of a hypnotherapist to make you feel comfortable before, during and after a session so if, at anytime, you feel uncomfortable with what the therapist is doing or saying tell them to stop! In order to get the most from any hypnosis session you must be able to relate to the hypnotist or hypnotherapist and trust them. For this reason all reputable hypnosis professionals give a free consultation before you ever enter a trance state. Seek out a hypnotist you feel comfortable with and who makes you feel that they can get the results that you are looking for - after all you are in charge! Hypnosis is merely a tool. It is a highly effective method for producing inner change that is permanent. I can understand that some religions forbid their followers to take part in anything that may cause them to lose control of their mental, emotional and conscious functions but believing that hypnosis or a hypnotist can do any of these things is just a misunderstanding of the process. Hypnosis in no way interferes with your free will. You will not do anything that is against your ethics. Under no circumstances will you ever do anything that is totally unacceptable to you or goes against your personal code of conduct. Neither will you do anything that is against your moral code or which feels wrong to do. If strutting around like a chicken would cause you serious embarrassment then you just won't do it! There is no danger of becoming trapped in a trance state. This is another Hollywood myth designed for entertainment purposes and has absolutely no basis in fact. The real fact is, you can terminate the hypnotic session at any time you wish just by opening your eyes and stretching! If a hypnotist, for any reason, were to leave you in a hypnotised state or a hypnotic recording stopped unexpectedly, you would either wake immediately or fall into a natural, light state of sleep and wake after a very short space of time - and this would only happen if you wanted to stay in the relaxed state! The cost of hypnosis and hypnotherapy vary depending on your location, the popularity of the therapist, and the length and nature of the sessions you wish to purchase. Don't go for the cheap option! Visit a few hypnosis centers. Take the free consultation. these consultations are designed so that you can make a choice as to whether the hypnotist is the right person for you or not. Its his/her job to convince you of that. A good start is to experience hypnosis through a carefully chosen tape, CD or MP3. By using a pre-made recording you can experience, in the comfort of your own home or office, the relaxing meditative state of trance and see whether it is for you or not!

    The ungiven gift

He was pencil thin and walked with a limp. A thirteen year-old boy with huge yearning eyes who was always an unlucky patient on the children's floor of the hospital where my youngest daughter was all too often incarcerated. Curtis had sickle cell anemia, an incurable, painful and terminal disease that plagues young people of African descent. I would meander into his room to spend a little time with the rebellious loner and would often end up refereeing a screaming match between him and one of the nurses. The street-wise Curtis would usually win. Over the course of a few years (the hospital was always my home-away-from-home), I eventually learned of the horror of his upbringing, the sad reality of his current life and the apparent dimness of his future. My experience as a volunteer in the Big Brother-like program in our local Children's Aid Society was that a small dose of interest and some one-on-one attention could go a long way to helping a kid who was in trouble with the law, failing school and in Curtis' case, a social outcast. So, when my time was over with the last boy I was involved with, I asked the CAS if I could hook up with Curtis, albeit 'unofficially' this time. Problem was, I was in the process of selling my drycleaning business while building a music production studio (for my next career) and my time was too much at a premium to commit to a structured arrangement. They agreed, and I began to hang with Curtis. I learned in very short order that among his survival skills was the tendency to cajole, cleverly manipulate and even outright steal. Although always kind, I had to have a second set of eyes when in his presence and was forced at times to be, well, curt with Curt. Also during this time, I was involved in a major lawsuit after having had a song of mine "lifted" by a one-time friend and co-writing partner in Los Angeles, who had become a 'hot' producer of major recording acts. On one of his multi-million selling records was the core of a song of mine he had heard and we discussed in my presence during one of my frequent music trips in the 1980's. I was a little more than hurt and felt I deserved not only the royalties for my creation, but also the credibility that went along with a "cut" of that magnitude by a name recording artist. I retained a highly regarded entertainment attorney in Detroit (he represented many of the athletes on the professional sports teams in Detroit as well as one of the all time greatest boxers and even some famous civil rights icons) who just happened to also be a truly wonderful and giving human being. It was in a meeting with this man that I casually mentioned Curtis and my desire to do something very special for him. See, in my heart, I had a feeling Curtis would not live for too many more years. Sickle cell sufferers often died in their early twenties, or even before, a decade ago. I wasn't expecting anything from my lawyer in this regard, but the next day the phone rang and I was instructed to have Curtis "dressed up" and at the Palace of Auburn Hills at a specific gate number one hour prior to a Detroit Pistons game later that week. He was a huge basketball fan. His hero of heroes was Isaiah Thomas, captain of the Motor City NBA Champs the prior two years. But I didn't let on to Curtis where we were going that night. Just that we were hanging out. I just asked his foster mother (and I use the term “mother” very lightly) to have him dressed nicely with his birth certificate in hand by a certain time. Curtis was on time, eagerly waiting on his rickety porch when I pulled up. But to my utter dismay, he looked as disheveled as he always did in his overbaggy, tattered clothes. And of course, good ol' foster mom couldn't find his birth certificate. Now, can you imagine the fancy dancin' I had to do at U. S. Customs having this 'gang looking' teenager with no identification trying to cross the border in my new BMW? Well, fate and some silver tongued talkin' prevailed and we were soon racing up I-75 to The Game. I tried to make idle conversation with the excited but slouching teenager. All Curtis could do was hound me. "Is it a ballgame? Is it a concert?" "Rick, where are we going?" I love to tease. Finally, he glimpsed the landmark dome of the arena from the freeway and knew he was going to get to see his favorite team play. We found the specified gate, parked and walked to the entrance. Walking with Curtis was always a little frustrating for me (he would do the 'slow, cool stroll' and I am a brisk walker) but this time I knew there was something special awaiting that we should almost race to. We were met by a well-dressed, executive-looking middle-aged man, who just happened to be the Vice-President of Public Relations for the Detroit Pistons. Talk about first class! He escorted Curtis not to his seat, but directly to the Pistons bench, where Curtis' eyes grew almost as big as the basketballs the giant athletes had just started tossing around in their pre-game warm-up. I was led to our primest of seats directly behind the bench. A waitress visited only seconds after that, taking my order for refreshments. Everything was "on the house". I saw one of the assistant coaches introduce himself to Curtis, and next thing I know, well, guess who's center court tossing the ball around with his hero, Isaiah? Soon, he was running the court and shooting hoops with Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Joe Dumars and the rest of the elite players! At this point, I couldn't even imagine the exhilaration that this young man who life never seemed to smile upon was experiencing at this very moment! I mean, how could anyone's wildest imagination even envision this ravaged spirit and body trying to "deek the Bad Boys of basketball?" I just sat quietly in utter amazement, misty eyed and SO grateful to my legal friend and the 'human' management of this professional sports team who arranged all of this for one person. A Canadian kid who was close to my heart When the warm-up was done, Curtis climbed up with me. The first half of the game was great. The Pistons were pounding their opponents. A few of the players even glanced back and motioned at their new teammate! By the time the half-time buzzer sounded I was certain Curtis' dream day was complete. But hold on, this was only half time! The same assistant coach who invited Curtis onto the hardwood floor pre-game, called for him to hang with the team in the sanctuary of the dressing room during their much-needed break. Give ME a break! I'll never forget what I think was the widest smile I have ever seen as the team emerged onto the floor afterwards and my little guy 'cool strolling' as proudly as I've ever seen anyone. And much quicker than I ever recalled. What a night!! The ride home was quiet. Opposite of the ride there. Curtis slept most of long way home. I could only imagine his dreams. Canada Customs was kind and allowed him to sleep through their few brief questions for me. It was sad to see him sleepily stagger up the sidewalk to his stark reality, after having just left a world where I'd bet no one would believe he had been. Somehow I thought I would receive a phonecall from Curtis the next day. But it never came. Two days later I had a very good reason to call him. My attorney and the team had arranged to have every player on the NBA Champion Detroit Pistons sign the game ball from that night, and Federal Express it to my home address, to give to Curtis. An autographed yearbook was included too. I couldn't wait to tell him. I mean, I was flabbergasted at this unexpected and over-the-top gesture! I recall excitedly dialing his number and the deflation after hearing that "Curtis took off to Toronto yesterday." She went on to explain that she didn't know where he was or how to contact him. And neither did the Children's Aid Society. Little did I know that evening would be the last time I would ever see Curtis. My instincts tell me that he is not with us anymore. But if he is, he has one great gift still waiting for him - The Ungiven Gift.

The unintentional delivery of post hypnotic suggestion

Introduction: "Until 1935 physicians relied heavily on God and the deep seated, instinctive will of patients to survive grave threats to life. Since the advent of sulphonamides, antibiotics, corticoids, blood banks, biologic monitoring devices, intensive care units and computers, there has been a tendency to forget the patient. This is a plea for the recognition of the fact that patients are people who can be frightened to death, condemned to long hospitalization, or helped to overcome great odds according to the quality of the information they receive from their attendants." Ernest Rossi and David Cheek. It is not necessary for hospital staff (or any other person for that matter) to be trained in the formal hypnosis models in order to deliver effective hypnotic suggestions to another person. These things are already happening all the time. I am sure I am not the first person to suggest that giving staff formal hypnosis training would actually act to help them stop giving hypnotic suggestions that inadvertently interfere with the well being of their patients. Whilst the terms "hypnosis" and "hypnotic suggestion" will conjure up different things for different people, I suspect that most laymen will consider hypnosis to be a special or even magical skill that lies in the possession of very few. For the sake of this essay, I would like to consider hypnosis as simply referring to a communication that asserts an effect upon the recipient's psychophysiology. By "effective hypnotic suggestion" I do not intend to imply that this refers to only beneficial suggestions and outcomes, but rather is a suggestion that creates a psycho-physiological change in the recipient, regardless of whether the psycho-physiological change is beneficial or not. I also recognize that these changes can occur independently of the intentions of the speaker. It was several years ago that myself and two hospital porters were taking a partially sedated patient to the operating rooms for surgery when a senior nurse called out to him, "Good luck, James!" A few seconds later as we moved down the corridor, James looked up to me and asked, "Do I really need luck? What does she know [that I don't know]?" Awareness Under Chemical Anaesthesia: "…particularly impressive have been some of the reports about what we may call 'fatty' comments where a surgeon made an insulting remark in reference to someone's weight during surgery. It is particularly impressive that such comments, unconsciously registered, seem to be capable of causing continuing psychosomatic problems and can be traumatic enough to cause post operative complications, depression and vegetative responses. A lawsuit has now been settled out of court concerning a 'beached whale' comment made by a surgeon around an anaethetised patient, which was recalled several days later by the patient and confirmed by a nurse who was present." It is my experience that all too often, innocuous and seemingly friendly remarks and communications have an adverse effect upon the patient, independent of the member of staff's intention and even if not directed at the patient himself. Imagine for example the simple comment from a tired nurse to a colleague as she expresses, "You know, I cannot wait for this shift to be over!" It may be just that she is tired, or maybe that she has a great party to go to, but how would such a comment be viewed (and felt) by the overhearing patient who owing to their condition has been dependent of this particular nurse all day? Such a comment, without negative intention, may be the difference that tilts the patient towards helplessness and thus depression and impedes recovery. A while ago I asked a colleague to return to me some important research papers I had lent to him. I wasn't going to see him again until the following Wednesday and I asked that he return them to me then. "I'll try to remember to bring them" he told me. My brain registered the word "try" and inside my head I pictured him saying to me next Wednesday, "I am sorry, but I did try to remember." I strongly suspected that without intervention, I would not be seeing my research papers when I needed them. Hypnotists will often utilize the word "try" to imply failure as it provides permission to fail. People will also hear it differently. For example, the stage hypnotist in the process of selection of volunteers may well have the audience collectively clasping their hands together, being urged to do so ever tighter and tighter. And then, with the same amount of urgency, the hypnotist will suggest that they all now try to pull their hands apart. Now, there is no secret to this. Whilst in a big enough audience, there may well be one or two people genuinely hypnotically stuck with their hands together, what is going on for the majority who remain standing, hands apparently stuck is that they haven't been told to pull their hands apart. Of course, they really could if they wanted to, but what they are doing is the activity of trying. I have often heard inexperienced hypnotists tell their clients to "try to relax" and on one occasion, to an already happily relaxed client, "try to relax and try to forget about all your worries and concerns that will stop you from going into trance." The physiological shift in this client from one of comfort to discomfort was noticeable as he was inadvertently reminded to consider all the worries and concerns that might prevent him from relaxing further. In any form of health care provision, rapport is very important as people tend to move away (either physically or mentally) from anyone that makes them feel bad - this may play a huge factor in the non-compliance behaviours so often witnessed in health care environments. In the West, with the impact of science and anaesthesia, medical treatments are not expected to hurt. An effective medicine no longer needs to taste very bitter in order that it is perceived as being a good medicine. It is unfortunate then that within the strong hierarchies that exist within hospital cultures we persistently find a small but significant number of individuals who wield their status and power to coerce, intimidate and dominate junior colleagues. It would be hard to correlate, but I cannot help but think that such behaviours have a knock on effect throughout the social system of the care environment ultimately manifesting as delayed healing times in the care recipients. A mistake that is common to many therapists of various fields is the operating belief that the subject or patient responds to the techniques employed by the therapist rather than to the quality of the delivery and the behaviour of the therapist themselves. The relationship the therapist forms with the patient is also critical in this context. In the case of hypnotherapy, a situation commonly arises whereby the subject sits there with eyes compliantly closed as the hypnotist laboriously reads a pre-written script at the subject. Meanwhile, the client is running an internal dialogue to the effect of, "this isn't working, I cannot be hypnotized." To hypnotists who do read scripts at the clients, I offer this advice. Just send them a copy of the script so they can read it themselves and save themselves on the bus fare. With an ever increasing emphasis on standardization of medical treatments we see a two fold result occurring. Firstly, and most importantly, the overall standard in the delivery of care countrywide increases. But secondly, we also witness a squashing of ingenuity and creatively it becomes increasingly harder to be outstanding in the field when the behaviours of care staff are reduced to that of a set of automated responses set against sets of automated criteria. Of course the net effect of all this is that the person that is behind the set of symptoms and criteria is frequently forgotten. And, with the increase in the use of modern technology to monitor and measure these patients we have a situation best summed up by neurologist Dr Richard Cytowic: "Care is something we deliver when we don't have a machine to do it for us." When a patient is in intensive care - his blood pressure is monitored both by automated cuff and via an indwelling arterial catheter; his breathing maintained and supported by a ventilator, his blood pressure and renal function supported by inotropes, parenteral nutrition supplied intravenously, pressure sore risk eliminated by use of flotron mattresses etc etc, when surrounded by all this life-supporting technology and monitoring, it is easy to understand how medical and nursing staff dismiss something as apparently trivial as their use of their voices as an aid to healing and recovery. As one surgeon suggested to me in ITU - we don't really make people well here, the body heals itself, we just try to keep them alive long enough to allow that to happen. Two useful patterns utilized in hypnosis are those of the contingent and adjunctive suggestion. These are common in everyday language and are an exceptionally effective hypnotic tool. Most people use these patterns every day without realizing that they are doing so. The effectiveness of this type of suggestion comes from the way that the suggestion is given on the back of an activity or behaviour that is already occurring. For example, "When you are in town, will you please buy me a pint of milk" and "If you go past the kitchen, will you make me a cup of tea." Now an aspect of these suggestions to bear in mind is that they are not asked as questions, in so much that they are not stated with an upward inflection (indicating a question) but rather with a downward inflection (command). There is no need to overemphasise the intonation, as a casual tone will usually suffice. In the anaesthetic rooms, I often hear anaesthetists say something like, "as I inject this you will begin to drift off to sleep" and then stop there, missing a rich opportunity to deliver additional suggestion. Some will encourage their patient to try to count from one to ten to see how far they can get - few make it past 7, as intravenous barbiturate has a rapidly sedating effect. Since drifting off to sleep is an inevitability and is perfectly predictable in terms of the anaesthetic rooms, we have ourselves an opportunity to create a chain of suggestion...continued....

    The value of associations

This past week I ran into a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in quite some time. It was good to see him again, at least for a few minutes. Then I remembered why I stopped associating with him in the first place. The guy has a big heart, and you can't help but love him. Unfortunately, he is also an incessant whiner. He is always going on about how he doesn't make enough money with his job, and how things never seem to go right for him in life. No matter what you say to him there is no shaking his loser mantality. He has chosen to be the victim in life, and to be quite honest I think he enjoys it. But it doesn't stop there. It's not enough for him to mope and complain about his own life, he does his best to bring the people around him down as well. He asked me how my 'little internet business' was going. Remember it's been a long time since we had spoken last. I certainly didn't want to rub anything in here, so I just told him politely that things were moving along and that I had quit my job as a delivery driver last year. I could see the irritation in his face. This guy was genuinely distraught over my success. He gave a grunt and said "Well good luck." But he didn't really mean 'Good luck'. What he meant was 'I hope you fall flat on your face and have to go back to your old job so I can feel better about who I am'. He's a loser because he projects nothing but negative energy into his own life, and he wants everyone around him fail and be miserable alongside him. No thanks. I spent just a couple more minutes chatting with him, then told him I had to run. I really do wish him the best, but I'm certainly not going to spend my precious time letting him sap the life out of me with his pity party no-hoper mentaility. There are plenty of positive, success-minded people for me to hang out with and that's where I prefer to spend my time. There is a lesson to all this, and here it is. Think of the most successful person you know. For our purposes today, let's define success as financial and emotional prosperity. This should be someone you know on a personal level, and not a character you've read about in your favorite business or glamour magazine. Now, ask yourself who this highly productive individual associates with. Chances are the group of folks you identify with this question won't be a bunch of lazy, negative, self-pity freaks. Now try the same excercise with the least successful individual you know. It's not too likely that your selection for "least successful" is a person who surrounds themselves with positive, productive human beings. The kind of people we surround ourselves with will have a profound effect on our thought patterns. Since it's safe to say our reality starts with our thoughts, the value of our personal associations can hardly be overstated. To spend the majority of our time around people who offer us doubt and discouragement is to limit ourselves to a bleak shadow of our full potential. Alternatively, by mingling with those who project confidence and optimism, we are sure to absorb an attitude of determination and tenacity. It's good practice to socialize with individuals who reflect our aspirations. People who want to whine and complain about how unfair life is, and how they just can't seem to 'get a break' are bad company. Especially when these people want to project their misery and negativity onto you. One of the best things you can do for your own success and happiness is give these losers the boot and find some happier, more productive people to associate with.
