    It’s vital that the bariatric patient keep an eye on sugar grams in food! About 97% of all bariatric surgery patients learn to become very familiar with what is known as the “dumping syndrome”, which is a way the body tells you that you ate something that you really shouldn’t have eaten. “Dumping” shows up in many forms from sudden fatigue, to nausea, to vomiting, and even diarrhea. When the “dumping” comes, take note of what you most recently ate, and do your best to avoid it again. Many things can cause dumping. Foods containing too much grease, fats, carbs, and sugars CAN make you “dump.” But the biggest culprit in this short list (yet so many foods have these elements in them), is SUGAR and SUGAR ALCOHOLS. What exactly are “Sugar Alcohols”? Basically, Sugar Alcohols are artificial sweeteners or “anything that serves as a sweetener in food but cannot be labeled as a sugar since it isn’t pure sugar.” Sugar Alcohols may not add calories (as real sugar does) to your body, BUT they DO ACT like sugar in the sense they will make the bariatric patient DUMP as if they partook of real sugar. On average, the bariatric patient cannot tolerate more than 12 grams of sugar PER MEAL. Beyond 12 grams of sugar will almost always cause some type of dumping, be it mild or severe. This is why it is essential to add up both the sugar AND the sugar alcohols that are being consumed per meal. Let’s say the food label says the product has 2 grams of sugar and 14 grams of sugar alcohols. Does that mean it’s safe? It is NOT safe because when the sugar alcohols act just like sugars, in essence, you are consuming 16 grams of “sugar-action” because you have to ADD the two together since they react in the body the same way. Some “diet” foods claim to be low in sugar – TRUE – but then they contain 22 grams of sugar alcohols. This is okay for non-bariatric patients, but a sure “dumping in the making” for us! What exactly is “Sugar”? Chemically, sugars are carbohydrates. As the body digests food, carbohydrates (except fiber) break down into sugars. We can find sugars in a variety of forms. Sugars just aren’t used to sweeten food: they are also used as natural preservatives and thickeners. Sugars are added to foods during processing and preparation. The body cannot tell the difference between “natural” sugars and artificial sugars because they are the same in regards to chemical breakdowns. “Incognito” Sugars Watch out for these sugars in disguise! Some are obvious while others are tricky: • Brown sugar • Corn sweetener • Corn syrup • Fructose • Fruit juice concentrate • Glucose (dextrose) • High-fructose corn syrup • Honey • Invert sugar • Lactose • Maltose • Molasses • Raw sugar • Table sugar (Sucrose) • Syrup If you find these things listed on food labels, remember this: the product is likely to be high in sugars if one of the above-mentioned shows first or second in the ingredients list. If several of these are listed, then the product most-definitively will be too high in “sugars” for the bariatric patient and will cause dumping. Also, fruits contain “natural sugars”. And fruits, unlike packaged foods, don’t have convenient wrappers on them revealing any sugar values within them. This is where we have to “know” how much sugars are in the fruits we eat. Pineapple is one of the highest natural-sugar fruits out there, and grapes are pretty high too. Fruits are good for our system, if taken in moderation. But too much of the “natural” sugars can also cause an ill effect. If you haven’t developed the FEAR OF SUGARS by now, then you might be doing yourself an injustice. It is important o know how sugars effect you personally so you can learn how to eat anywhere with confidence. When you begin to understand how sugars affect your system, you can then attend any social event and know what is okay to eat and how much of that “party” food you can safely eat without causing an embarrassing and inconvenient dumping episode. When you’re dumping, attention is naturally drawn to you because others genuinely care and will inquire about why you’re not feeling well.     I’m often asked what is the best diet, or the best food program, best exercise program and which single best book to recommend to improve your health, fitness or weight loss. The answer is that there is no best way to do it. There is no best book, and there is no right way or wrong way to do it. The 5 Critical things you must do to achieve your health are these 1. Continue to learn about health, fitness, nutrition and weight loss from a wide variety of sources The single most important thing to do right from the start is to take action and begin learning about health, followed very closely by putting what you learn into practice. We are a very diversified bunch of people and what works for you may not work for the next person. You have to find what works for you from a wide variety of sources, expand your knowledge and accept no one thing as being the best for your health. Keep reading, keep learning and keep what works for you and discard what doesn’t. Knowledge isn’t power, but “knowledge in action is power!” Some very simple things to keep in mind is that the body runs on food and if you give it the best quality food, in whatever manor that happens to be, then you’ll probably get some good results in general. Keep the nutrition to a maximum by eating as close to nature as possible, organic where possible and eliminating processed foods and trans fats. 2. Find a mentor. Someone who’s been there, done that and that you can model . I realized at quite an early age that if we can model someone who’s been there and done that and gotten results, then you can “cut to the chase” as it were to find out what works for your health and weight loss - what doesn’t and in doing so get results faster. Find a mentor, a role model for the things that you’re looking for. If it’s weight loss or to improve your health, find someone who’s walked in your footsteps and knows what you’re going through. Model them. Do what they did, repeat their process and contact them to ask what worked and what didn’t. You can save yourself a lot of time and effort by doing what works and skipping what doesn’t. 3. Apply the knowledge you learn about health on a daily basis This is where the taking action part comes in. You must begin to apply the knowledge you’ve gained from what you’ve read about health or watched and by talking with people who’ve been there before you. If you do not put it into practice then you’ve become an information junkie and not someone who follows through on their knowledge. You must begin to work the principles you’ve learned on a daily basis and keep at it. Without the trial and error, you get nowhere fast and won’t truly know what works and what doesn’t. 4. Repeat steps one, two and three Remember, there is no right way or wrong way to lose weight, improve your health or get what you want. You must continue to learn and challenge what you’ve read. I’m told that what I teach is wrong and I ask what were your results when you tried it? Well, they didn’t try it and so I then ask “what right do you have to tell me what I teach is wrong”. It may have worked for me or for many people I coach including yourself, but without trying it and challenging it, you won’t ever know. Keep learning about health, keep reading, keep applying what you’ve read and this new knowledge. Begin the process of filtering for yourself what will and won’t work for you. Remember this is about you, not me or the other guy, but what will help you achieve your weight loss goals or your health. This may very well be about applying certain fitness principles that sound so controversy that you figure they can’t possibly work. One of my favorite sayings is “believe nothing I say, but I challenge you to prove me wrong”. My intent is to have you try it. When I first begun my journey to lose 300 pounds, I read one book and I preached the principles like they were the gospel. I was finally told to “shut up” and read something else, so I took it upon myself to learn whatever I could about health and weight loss. I began to apply my new knowledge daily, found people who had used the info before and what they believed about it, what worked for them for their health and then discovered for myself what worked. Finally, I discovered the ultimate secret to health and weight loss. 5. Never give up. It never ends. In the large scope of your life, the next 30, 40, 50 or more years, what is a few days if you happen to get off track. Get right back on doing what you were doing, keep learning, keep trying new things, go back to what worked when it was working and keep up with your daily fitness routine. Probably the single most important fact about exercise or fitness is that our body is designed to move and we’ve gotten away from that. We must do something on a daily basis to exercise our body. Never give up. Never lose sight of the health you want and keep working towards your goal.

When I finally took charge of my physique, everything in my life got better - my social life improved, my health improved, my family life improved, my spiritual life improved, and my financial life skyrocketed. I went from feeling like nobody noticed me to being picked out in a crowd of people (the right people). Here's a horrible fact that I regularly speak about in my teleseminars and live events; in today’s society, without a nice body, people subconsciously make life a bit harder for you. You see it all the time. People who are in good shape almost always get treated differently by others. Now I’m not saying that’s fair it’s absolutely not - but it’s a fact of life, so why not take advantage of it? You see, you can’t change the fact that most everybody else in the world seems to treat good-looking people better, but you can change the one person who really matters, and that’s you. You can make yourself as strong and healthy-looking as possible, making life easier for you and setting a good example for your family so that they can also live a more successful and healthy life. Good looking people climb the corporate ladder faster, they portray more authority when they stand in front of their staff, they get more preferential treatment, and they have far more stamina to take on all the work that's necessary in order to build a powerful company or business. There are eight people in my inner circle of friends, all of which own businesses which gross from $5 million to $700 million annually - the bigger the business, the more focus that owner puts on staying in top shape. These people aren't stupid, they don't want to grow a huge company then not be in good enough health to enjoy the rewards -- and the secret that all of these folks have is that being in good shape didn't start when they became successful - it started way before that - and probably had a lot to do with their success.

    The holidays an emotional feast

     

    Every year, I swear that I will be thin enough to wear my smallest dress to the office party. And every year, I don’t quite make it. Oh, I can usually get into it by the beginning of February after a diet-obsessed, guilt-ridden January, but it doesn’t mean as much then. Why are November and December so toxic to our weight control efforts? Certainly there is abundant food available during the month long celebration from Thanksgiving to New Year. It is the season for non-stop parties and gifts of food from colleagues, friends, family, and customers. But more than just the food, there is a special atmosphere that descends on the Western World at the end of November. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzai – whatever the celebration involved – evoke the onset of primitive emotions. We wax nostalgic over the holidays we recall from childhood. We turn towards family and traditions that have been absent from our thoughts for the rest of the year. We indulge ourselves in the joy of giving and receiving. Cookies, and chocolates, and gift baskets bursting with preservatives, which we would politely refuse during any other time of the year, are now gratefully accepted in the spirit of the season. Food we would normally avoid – creamed soups, fruit glazes, gravy, fruit breads, honeyed hams – appear as comfort foods, warming and welcoming. Our sophisticated and world-weary veneer fades in the face of traditions that make us feel whole and contented again. The goodwill we feel demands a context and a continuity that was established many years ago. Each December, we trot out the same old carols, enjoying the familiarity of tunes we learned to love sitting next to a glittering tree and a roaring fire. For a month, we emotionally step back in time to reconnect who we are with who we were. Despite its current crass commercialism, we need the holidays to remind us of our roots, our values, and our beginnings. So this year, I am going to throw myself into the fray, eat whatever I want, and let the chips fall where they may. I can always wear something else to the office party and there will be innumerable occasions in the New Year when I can attain caloric virtue through deprivation and denial. You have probably heard it before, but you really don’t want to hear it again. It hasn’t changed from 5 years ago, from 10 years ago, even from 30 years ago. You want to know what it is? Well, here I go. To lose weight, you need to eat right, exercise correctly, and you will lose weight. That is it. Sounds simple right??!! Well, then why do so many people struggle with it? Because it doesn’t happen quickly and it is so hard!!!! To safely lose weight, you are going to want to lose 1-2 pounds a week. This sounds daunting to people who need to lose 100 – 200 pounds. That means it could take anywhere from a year to 4 years to lose the weight you need. In a “now” society that just isn’t good enough, but it is going to have to suffice. With all our advanced technology, scientists still haven’t come up with that magic pill. They are trying because someone would make a boatload of money, but it hasn’t been done. ACCEPT THAT! There are no shortcuts. It is going to take a lot of hard work, discipline, and support from your family and friends, but it can be done. Here is what to do. You are going to have to do cardiovascular exercises 5-7 times a week, for roughly 30-45 minutes. That stinks, I know, but you need to do it to burn fat. You also need to do weight training to develop muscle and speed up your metabolism. You need to strength train 2-3 times a week and push yourself. You have to work at an intensity that is going to develop muscle. If you don’t, it is essentially a waste of your time. People always tell me what they do for exercise. When I correct some of their routine, they always say, “Well, something is better than nothing right.” Wrong! If you are going to dedicate the time to exercise, do it right. Otherwise it is no better than sitting in front of your television watching a Jennifer Lopez video. I told you that you weren’t going to like what I was going to write. Now, what to eat? This isn’t rocket science. Ignore all those fad diets out there. Try this. Get rid of all the crap in your cupboards and don’t pretend you don’t know what it is. Cookies, chips, ice cream, crackers. I don’t care if it says low fat, low calorie, whatever, pitch it. Replace it with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole wheat items (bread, pasta, etc.). No one ever said they gained weight by eating a bag of baby carrots for a late night snack. Eat 4 to 5 times throughout the day. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus healthy snacks in between. This will keep your metabolism up plus give you healthier choices. If you do all of this, you will lose weight. If you think you are eating healthy and exercising properly, but you haven’t lost weight, then you are DEAD WRONG! It takes some knowledge and discipline, but it will work. You might just have read some misinformation. Follow these guidelines and lose weight. It will take time, it could be rough at times, but it will happen. The transformation you will see will definitely make it all worthwhile.
