The wonderful world of harry potter audio books

    #1

Ever since J. K. Rowling created the character known as Harry Potter, who at the age of 11 finds out that he is in fact a powerful wizard, the world was taken by storm and the Harry Potter mania hit every book stores, movie theaters and video games. Not only that, with the boom in internet shopping and the recent introduction of Harry Potter audio books, the phenomenon continues to spread and now, downloadable Harry Potter audio books in different audio formats such as MP3, OGG, etc, Harry Potter audio books on CD/DVD, and Harry Potter books on tape are available for purchase. Harry Potter Audio Books are available in the United States for $25 to $60 dollars. To give you a better idea of the pricing structure, here is an example – “Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone” is available on 7 CDs lasting in total 8 hours 25 minutes: CD 1: 73'59 minutes CD 2: 73'57 minutes CD 3: 72'48 minutes CD 4: 69'27 minutes CD 5: 71'30 minutes CD 6: 74'00 minutes CD 7: 66'16 minutes This can be purchased for a total cost of about $50. Harry Potter audio books that have been released and available for download/purchase include – • Harry Potter Audio Book 1 : The Sorcerer's Stone • Harry Potter Audio Book 2 : The Chamber of Secrets • Harry Potter Audio Book 3 : The Prisoner of Azkaban • Harry Potter Audio Book 4 : The Goblet of Fire • Harry Potter Audio Book 5 : The Order of the Phoenix • Harry Potter Audio Book 6 : The Half-Blood Prince In the American edition of the Harry Potter audio book series, Jim Dale, a singer, songwriter, and actor from Rothwell, England, is the voice of all the characters. His work on the Harry Potter audio book series has won Dale a Grammy Award (2000); one Grammy nomination each for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; and two AudioFile Earphone Awards. For the UK edition, Stephen John Fry, an English comedian, author, actor and filmmaker, is the voice. The Harry Potter audio books have been highly praised by many, who regard it as an exceptional educational activity for dyslexic children and younger kids who can not read yet. For children who dislike reading books, once they listen to the Harry Potter audio books and become familiar with the stories, it may be able to guide and encourage them to start reading the Harry Potter real books. In addition, the Harry Potter audio books can teach them new words, accurate pronunciations, and proper speaking techniques. However, critics have also accused the Harry Potter audio books of encouraging children to read lesser than they would usually do in normal circumstances. Others have also blamed the audio books of stealing away the imagination and creativity of the children.

    Real magic beyond harry potter

    #1

Real Magic: Beyond Harry Potter Harry Potter has been all over the news these days, due to the launch of the 7th Harry Potter book and the 5th Harry Potter movie. It's certainly no accident that the 5th movie "Order of the Phoenix" came out a week before the 7th book "Deathly Hallows". It seems to have been such a great success, and has worked all the Harry Potter fans into a frenzy! There is even a lot of controversy from fundamentalist Christian groups around the fact that these books & movies promote witchcraft and sorcery. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the Harry Potter series doesn't nearly do justice to promoting witchcraft and sorcery. It is after-all fiction, and the aspects of using magic are highly over-dramatized compared to the results of REAL witchcraft and sorcery. However, the concerns are founded, as many of these Harry Potter fans will and probably are seeking out the real forms of magic use. I think this is a great thing, as much of the fear of witchcraft is based on ignorance, and not the truth of what it really is. Modern day REAL witches and Sorcerers are people who generally embrace multiculturalism and seek to learn answers to their spiritual questions where-ever answers can be found. These days there are also plenty of New Age spiritualists to learn from that are skilled in witchcraft, yoga, meditation, and psychology. There is also a growing trend outside of the Harry Potter movement that is cluing into what is called the "Law of Attraction". This "Law of Attraction" when understood and implemented correctly, is definitely a form of magic in my books. What probably comes absolutely closest in the real world to Harry Potter style magic, is psychic ability. There are psychics all over the world, and it is known to be a skill that can be learned by anyone who studies it diligently. Yes, you are psychic too, although you may not have tapped into your psychic abilities yet. Many of the psychics today can be found practicing various forms of meditation, yoga, shamanism, and other types of pagan religions. I must admit that I am glad to see a resurgence of paganism and wisdom of other religions. I think the future holds a fusion hybrid understanding of how the world works, and a greater ability for humans to tap into their psychic ability due to the understandings that each world culture has contributed. I'm hoping that all those Harry Potter fans will seek to attain magical abilities themselves, and in doing so help to positively change the world with their newfound powers. So I choose to celebrate the Harry Potter movies, the 7 Harry Potter books, and I encourage Harry Potter fans to continue their quest for knowledge, wisdom, and Magic beyond fiction.

Store that collection of harry potter books in your kids bookshelves

    #1

Arrange those Harry Potter books starting with the first novel, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, to the 7th book, Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows. The saga that begun in 1997 ended in July 2007, but your children don't know that. They want Harry Potter to continue to thrill them with his brave exploits. So keep those books on the kids’ bookshelves. Magic, Wizards, and A Sad Little Boy Combined in a bedtime story, magic, wizards, and a sad little boy make for spectacular storytelling. With the first book, you progressed to the next, and the one after that to satisfy your little ones until they were able to read the book on the own. As Harry Potter grew up, so did your kids. It's nice if you've kept the complete collection in kids’ bookshelves. They'll never forget this hero who colored their bedtime with his feats and filled their childish friends with magic. If you recall, your kids hated the Dursley family - long-necked Aunt Petunia, ill-tempered Uncle Vernon, and the fat pig-in-a-wig Dudley. They were the antagonists, just like the much loathed Lord Voldemort. Though the story has ended, they can still pick up these books anytime from the kids’ bookshelves you've placed in their bedroom. Sometimes you sneak a book out now and then when you're tired of the latest news and the troubles of the world. You prefer a Harry Potter book because at least, the turmoil and the intrigues were in far-away Hogwarts. The 7 books will remain on kids’ bookshelves until they are old and tattered from repeated handling and reading during those rainy nights. Even the tiniest member of the family will have his share of the bedtime magic. By that time, you've had the names of all the characters down pat - Harry (for sure), Ron, Hermione, the Dursleys, the Weasleys, Hagrid (the gentle half-giant), Dumbledore, and other amazing witches and wizards. You'll be describing in full detail the game of quidditch, the invisibility cloak, and the monsters that Harry Potter battled with. Words of Wisdom As the kids grow up, you'll be able to borrow words of wisdom when your kids are troubled or have tiffs with both friends and foe. If you get the book Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, you can quote the line: "it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends", and send your child out to the world with this reminder that will help shape their values. Or if your kids are discouraged with their failed projects and friendships, you can also quote form Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire: "understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance can there be recovery." Beautiful and right on target. Your kids will understand this. Haven't they shared Harry's highs and lows too? So be sure to keep those precious books on the kids’ bookshelves until they have grown and until the baby has gone through the seven books. You'll be surprised that they'll remember the details of Hogwarts more than you can. Someday, they will share the magic with their own children. Just like J. K. Rowling, you've made this magic live in your children's hearts and minds. So keep those books on the kids’ bookshelves.

The magic of harry potter meets the world of flowers

    #1

If you've been paying any attention at all to the world of movies and books in the last several years, you know whom Harry Potter, the boy wizard and star of J. K. Rowling's acclaimed series of books, is. The magic of Harry Potter is so pervasive that it has even entered the world of flowers in the name of a new species of flower found in Ecuador. The name of this new flower is Macrocarpaea Apparata. It's name comes from the term "apparate," which is used throughout the Harry Potter series to describe wizards disappearing from one place and reappearing in another. Central to the discovery of this new flower was Lena Struwe, an assistant professor of ecology, evolution, and natural resources at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey. Struwe's choice of the name and its connection to the world of Harry Potter wasn't an accident. She is, in fact, a fan of the young wizard. The flower was so named because the discovering team conducted quite a search of the Ecuadorian mountains in search of one of these plants bearing flowers so that they could make a definite determination that this was, indeed, a new species. After searching for hours, a tall plant with yellowish-white, bell-shaped flowers appeared almost magically—they almost seemed to apparate. Now, while the discovery of a new flower species is an exciting event, the magic that flowers hold really comes as no mystery to those of us in the flower industry. Flowers hold the power to cheer up a sick friend, congratulate a new mother, bring joy to someone who is lonely, and say "I love you" to a spouse. Over the many years I've been in the flower industry, I've had the opportunity to create flowers for every holiday, special occasion, and event you can imagine—and probably even some you can't! One of the most rewarding things about being a florist is the warmth with which a floral delivery is always received. Even in times of grief, such as funerals or serious illness, flowers bring a measure of happiness and are greeted by a feeling of gratitude. Flowers have brought magic to my life and they make me feel a bit like Harry Potter myself when I see a smile suddenly appear.

Your children know more latin than you

    #1

The beautiful language of Latin has been undergoing an incredible revival of interest lately. Why has this formerly moldy language acquired a new luster? What constitutes a "revival of interest"? Last year 148,000 students applied to take the National Latin Exam, according to their website ( nle. org). In North Carolina there was a 156% increase in the number of students taking the exam, in Nevada an 84% increase. You didn't even know there was a National Latin Exam, did you? Get with the times! What's old is new, and Latin is cool again. Pop-culture has had a big hand in this. The Harry Potter books and movies -- insanely popular with adolescents -- feature Latin prominently as the language of magic. There is even a complete Latin translation of the first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. If your child is reading "Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis" you can feel pretty confident about the quality of instruction they're getting at school. The more serious side of Latin has been in the movies recently, too. Mel Gibson's controversial film The Passion of the Christ featured actors speaking in Latin and Aramaic. Although the Bible was not originally written in Latin, Latin became the language of the Roman Catholic Church. Consequently the Latin Vulgate served as the standard Bible for centuries. Inspired by The Passion, many Christians have begun learning Latin so they can read the Vulgate directly. Resaerch has shown that students who take Latin score higher on their SAT's, a big incentive for parents. Latin specifically improved English comprehension scores and was shown to sharpen language skills in general. The study of Latin has significant benefits, and despite (or because of) its arcane reputation it is becoming more common in schools and universities. If you aren't curious about it now, you will be when your children ask you to read them Harrius Potter at night.

Gratitude lies in guessing harry potter s grandfather s name

    #1

Before you see where this article is heading, maybe you would like to take a short quiz on Harry Potter. To all Harry Potter's fans and foes out there, please give your best shot at answering the following question. What would you call Harry Potter's grandfather? Any success yet, no? Come on, surely you can think harder than that? You've read it at least three times in the books before! Ok, here's the answer, Harry Potter's grandpa is' Mr Potter! Isn't it funny? I apologize if the answer has left any unforeseen mental traumas or bodily bruises from falling off the seats. But the question that I really want to ask is more important than Harry Potter's ancestry. The question is: what were you doing, when you were reading the joke? Were you glancing through the words to get the answer straight away, just like what the other 90% of the people did and react with indifference? Or did you contemplate about the answer while looking for it, and welcome it with a smile or a look of disbelief? Truth be told, as long as you smile or jest at the joke, you are showing appreciation for the joke, you are showing gratitude for it. Do you want to know why? Because you are living in the moment, that's why. You are paying attention to life's mini surprises and you are showing gratitude for them by responding accordingly. Only by 'living in the moment', you can find yourself giving the most sincere gratitude. In fact, showing gratitude should be a way of life! 'So, if I am still alive and kicking, doesn't it mean I'm living in the moment?' And thus you are showing gratitude 24/7? Nope, most people never did live in the moment. A Zen parable illustrates this point perfectly: Young Monk: Master, how do I practise The Way? Old Master: When hungry, eat; when tired, sleep. Young monk: Is it not what most people do? Old Master: (Shaking his head in disapproval) No, no, no. Most people are not like this. Most people, when eating, are full of thoughts and desire, and when sleeping, are full of cares. -AsiaPac, The book of Zen Attention deficit is no longer an ingrained disorder; it can be picked up and learnt as we follow the pace of the society, the result is what the parable mentioned; core activities such as eating and sleeping are now congruent with the TV or work desk. One can't help but wonder, is it really vital to work while eating? Multitasking is meant for tasks only, if eating has become a 'task' for you, you have lost a gift, the gift of appreciation and showing gratitude for the simple things in life. It would be pointless if I had told you a step-by-step process for showing gratitude or living in the moment. I strongly believe in the maxim that; when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Once you understood the significance of bringing gratitude into your life, you will have no problems understanding gratitude itself. I'll end with a quote, 'Yesterday is gone, that's why it is called the past. Tomorrow never comes, that's why it's called the future. Today is a gift, and that's why it's called the present'

Celebrities who suffer from acne do they really exist

    #1

Is there any such thing as a celebrity who suffers from acne? At first, it seems not… but that's only a myth - there really are celebrities out there who suffer from acne! Many people envy those who have achieved celebrity status. They are viewed as rich and powerful… glamorous and sometimes even a little super-human. When you see them on television, in movies or in the glossy magazines the men always look ruggedly handsome and the women look stunningly beautiful. Seldom are we given the chance to see these celebrities, in the comfort and privacy of their own homes, as they wake up in the mornings. No doubt the envious population would change their options somewhat knowing that almost no one is particularly glamorous at that time of day. Cosmetics, technology and advanced photo editing methods can easily make people look younger, thinner and magically cover up flaws such as freckles, scars and acne. This is just what the producers of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire have had to do. All three adolescent stars - Daniel Radcliffe who plays Harry Potter, 15. Rupert Grint who plays Ron Weasley, 17 and Emma Watson 15, who plays Hermione Granger - have broken out with acne forcing the film makers of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire to use special effects to hide their skin imperfections. Celebrities deal with the same problems the rest of us do, acne being one of them. Britney Spears, Judith Light, Stephanie Seymour and Elle Macpherson have all publicly discussed how they have suffered from and corrected their acne problem. By doing so, they have not only helped themselves, but millions of other acne sufferers around the world - they are positive proof that acne treatments work. Your acne problem won't be gone overnight, it will take time. But as you begin to see an improvement in your condition it's quite possible that you will begin to feel like a celebrity, too! ======================================================

Putting the magic back into young adult fantasy

    #1

As the market becomes saturated with young adult fantasy books in the "Harry Potter" mold, how long will it be before the genre loses its magic? "If, like me, you've noticed that the spell being cast by the latest crop of young adult fantasy novels is becoming less potent, it seems a fair question to ask," said R. J. Nimmo, a young adult novelist and expert on entertainment for children. Nimmo doesn't dispute the continued popularity of the sword-and-sorcery retreads out there. "Nonetheless, assorted witches, djinn and goblins risk succumbing to that well-known pitfall of every successful celebrity from boy bands to Britney: overexposure," he said. Nimmo says the genre's rise in popularity was initially due to J. K. Rowling's wildly successful "Harry Potter" series and was further compounded by the success of the "Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman. "They are all fantastic books - genuinely fun and original," Nimmo said. "The problem is the market is becoming saturated. One more insipid 'Harry Potter' clone may be one too many." So how can parents find worthwhile reading choices that their kids - whose appetites for fantasy fiction show no sign of abating - will want to open and read? "The trick is to find books for children and young adults where the fantasy genre elements are infused as part of historical-inspired stories, thus sharpening the emotional, intellectual and educational edge," Nimmo said. "The Ancient Egyptian Ennead," Nimmo's latest myth-inspired novel set in Egypt in the time of the pharaohs, promises to do just that. "The magic in my books is something readers can identify with: the magic of learning about ancient civilizations, gods, myths and monsters," he said. "It's the way forward for an increasingly lackluster genre. I want to put the magic back in the hands of the reader."

Tips and tricks for using ebay search

    #1

If you know what you’re doing, you can quickly find what you’re looking for on eBay. Here are a few golden rules. Be specific: If you’re searching for the first edition of the original Harry Potter book, you’ll get further searching for ‘harry potter rowling philosopher’s stone first edition’ than you will searching for ‘harry potter’. You’ll get fewer results, but the ones you do get will be far more relevant. Spell wrongly: It’s a sad fact that many of the sellers on eBay just can’t spell. Whatever you’re looking for, try thinking of a few common misspellings – the chances are that fewer people will find these items, and so they will be cheaper. Get a thesaurus: You should try to search for all the different words that someone might use to describe your item, for example searching for both ‘TV’ and ‘television’, or for ‘phone’, ‘mobile’ and ‘cellphone’. Where you can, though, leave off the type of item altogether and search by things like brand and model. Use the categories: Whenever you search, you’ll notice a list of categories at the side of your search results. If you just searched for the name of a CD because you want to buy that CD, you should click the ‘CDs’ category to just look at results in that category. Why bother looking through a load of results that you don’t care about? Don’t be afraid to browse: Once you’ve found the category that items you like seem to be in, why not click ‘Browse’ and take a look through the whole category? You might be surprised by what you find. Few people realise just how powerful eBay’s search engine is – a few symbols here and there and it’ll work wonders for you. Wildcard searches: You can put an asterisk (*) into a search phrase when you want to say ‘anything can go here’. For example, if you wanted to search for a 1950s car, you could search for ‘car 195*’. 195* will show results from any year in the 1950s. In this order: If you put words in quotes ("") then the only results shown will be ones that have all of the words between the quote marks. For example, searching for “Lord of the Rings” won’t give you any results that say, for example “Lord Robert Rings”. Exclude words: Put a minus, and then put any words in brackets that you don’t want to appear in your search results. For example: “Pulp Fiction” –(poster, photo) will find items related to Pulp Fiction but not posters or photos. Either/or: If you want to search for lots of words at once, just put them in brackets: the TV example from earlier could become ‘(TV, television)’, which would find items with either word. So once you’ve found your bargain item, bid for it and won it, what if it all goes wrong? Don’t worry – eBay has a thorough dispute resolution procedure, and we’ll cover it in some depth in the next article, so you’ll be prepared if the worst happens.

These are novelty candies that children enjoy not because they taste good but because they taste bad. These kinds of jelly beans have really taken off since the first Harry Potter movie. After that movie came out there were some Harry Potter brand jelly beans made. These had flavors such as vomit and snot! Why would you want to eat these kinds of jelly beans? It is crazy but children certainly ate them up! youngwizardpro/potter Give me the old fashioned colorful jelly beans and I am happy as are most people men, women and children alike. Jelly beans are a classic candy treat that you can give to your children and they can give to theirs, they are fantastic as long as you remember to brush your teeth after you eat them. All of that sugar can wreak havoc on your teeth if you are not careful. Another concern to always remember at Easter time is that jelly beans are not for everyone. Those children who are still very young should not eat jelly beans as they could choke on them.

    Taming the ebay search engine

    #1

If you know what you’re doing, you can quickly find what you’re looking for on eBay – and the more you know about how buyers find you, the easier you’ll find it to be found. Here are a few golden searching rules. Whatever you’re looking for, try thinking of a few common misspellings – you might find a few items here that have slipped through the cracks. Get a thesaurus: You should try to search for all the different words that someone might use to describe an item, for example searching for both ‘TV’ and ‘television’, or for ‘phone’, ‘mobile’ and ‘cellphone’. Where you can, though, leave off the type of item altogether and search by things like brand and model. Use the categories: Whenever you search, you’ll notice a list of categories at the side of your search results. If you just searched for the name of a CD, you should click the ‘CDs’ category to look at results in that category only. Don’t get too tied up learning the ways of the search engine, though: a surprising number of eBay users don’t search at all, preferring to look through eBay’s category system and save their favourites in their browser. The next email will show you how to make sure these people can find you too.

    #1

Why a blind child ought to miss the Harry Potter books? Why can’t he enjoy like millions of children all over the world the Harry Potter magic? Well, he can enjoy it. Indeed, he can not read the books or watch the movies but he can listen to the audio books, which is also a great experience. Audio books may be useful for many populations – Elder people could go on “reading” audio books when they are not capable of reading books any more, busy career people can listen to business journals and magazines via audio books, children can listen to audio books of a higher level than they are able to read etc. However, it seems that one of the populations that may gain the most out of audio books is not using them yet. There are approximately 10 million blind and visually impaired people in the United States alone. Audio books can enhance their life personally and professionally. First, audio books can help blind people enjoy the experience of reading books. Years ago, people predicted that the end of the paper books is near due to new technologies. However, the popularity of books keeps increasing. They provide a special experience no other gadget can compete with. Audio books can supply a similar experience for the blind population. Secondly, audio books can take blind people’s education one step forward. Learning foreign languages, poetry, literature, English grammar etc. could be optimized using audio books. Did you know that there are approximately 93,600 visually impaired or blind students in the United States? Thirdly, blind people can develop habits and hobbies using audio books. One could find audio books about every subject from fishing to knitting guides. And finally, unfortunately blind people are often treated as outsiders and develop inferiority emotions. There are a lot of self creation, self confidence and awareness audio book guides which can help them. Whether you belong to the blind and visually impaired people or not, we strongly advise you to join the audio book experience now. Have fun.

Harry Potter. The name brings instant recognition from people all over the world. The books have sold over 350 million copies worldwide. Only the bible has more translations. The movies have gone on to grace the lists of the Top 10 grossing films of all time. When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997, Joanne Kathleen Rowling was a previously unpublished author. She had no publishing credits, no insider knowledge, no friends in the industry. So how did she do it? How did she go on, in the space of ten short years, to become the first billionaire author on the planet? The answer to that question lies not in what she did in those ten years between the publication of the first book and the publication of the seventh, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The answer actually lies in what she did in the seven years prior to the first book’s publication. So if you’re an author who is yet to be published, you’re actually in the best possible position. Because it’s in this time, before your book hits the shelves, that you can have the greatest influence on its success. Quite simply, JK Rowling followed a four-step writing process that you too can adopt to write your very own list of bestsellers. The question is: do you have what it takes to be the next JK Rowling? Planning This is by far the most underrated of the steps in the writing process. And in the final wash up it is absolutely the most important. It was 1990 and Jo Rowling was on a train between Manchester and London. Harry literally strolled fully formed into her mind while she was gazing out the train window at a field full of cows. She spent the next four hours (the train was delayed) imagining Harry, the world he inhabited, the friends and enemies he had there and the dangers and joys he may encounter there. She had nothing to write on so had to be content to play this all out in her imagination. By the time she got off the train in London, the central cast of characters were already cemented in her mind. But did she go home and immediately begin scribbling a story with these characters? No, she didn’t. She spent five years, yes that’s right FIVE YEARS creating and developing every last detail of the wizarding world, including government and education systems, how the wizarding world stood shoulder to shoulder with the muggle world, and she devised a highly sophisticated system of magic that would eventually form the backbone of her own special brand of writing magic. On top of this she sculpted out the entire story, planning the details and events of all the seven books, before she put pen to paper to begin writing the first. Would you attempt to build a house without plans? Would you attempt to drive across the country without a map? Or would you set sail on the seas without a compass? Writing a book without a detailed planning stage is like attempting to build a house without plans. Miss this step and you are almost certainly destined to become lost in a forest of your own words. Writing When you are writing, you are just writing. You are not planning, you are not editing. You are writing. Once you have planned your story, it is time to sit down and write it. JK Rowling planned the Harry Potter series for five years before she put pen to paper on the first book She wrote the entire first book, and felt as though she were “carving it out of this mass of notes”. All the planning was worth it. She was able to devote herself to the actual task of writing, knowing that all the story and character elements she needed were covered. This is the best possible place for you to be in when you are writing a novel. Novels are long. Usually over 100,000 words and sometimes as many as 200,000 words and more. That is a lot of words! So if you have planned and structured your story effectively, done your research (either real or in your imagination) and collated your notes, then the writing process is an absolute joy, where you can be very certain of your ability to produce the best possible novel. Jo Rowling said she felt she “had to do right by the book”. She really believed in the story and so when it came to writing it, she made sure she had taken care of all the necessary preparation. Once that’s done, writing is almost easy! Rewriting Jo Rowling rewrote the opening chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone a total of 15 times. Her own mother died just 6 months after her first attempt at Chapter One of that book, and that sent her into a frenzy of rewriting, essentially changing everything. The Potter books are about death, there is no doubt about that, and they are driven particularly by the death of Harry’s parents and his miraculous survival. When Jo Rowling experienced such a major turning point in her own life, she rewrote the story to reflect and process her own pain. Writing and rewriting are separate processes. Writing is scribing or sculpting out the drafts of the story. Rewriting is re-looking and re-seeing. Often the rewrite will show up where the story has gone off track and where questions asked at the start haven’t been answered by the end. In JK Rowling’s case, she realised after writing the entire first book that she had given away the entire plot of the seven books. She rewrote it in this light, and held many things back. Many successful authors say that you only write to rewrite. DH Lawrence even said that he wrote his entire first draft, threw it away and then started again from scratch. Editing Editing is the process of refining and polishing your manuscript. This part of the process may be done by you, or by an external editor. It is often wise to have an editor look over your work before submitting it for publication as it is extremely difficult to get the distance you need from your own work to see where it can be improved. Not that you have to listen to what the editor says. In the end it is your name on the spine of that novel and you are entirely answerable for its contents. Having said that, a good and subtle editor can lift your novel to heights that you may not be able to achieve on your own. It is clear from the Harry Potter series that JK Rowling was more tightly edited at the beginning (the first two novels are barely more than 200 pages and by the time we get to number five, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, we are faced with a weighty tome of over 700 pages) so it is generally advisable at the beginning of your career to bear the advice of your editor heavily in mind, especially if you are new to publishing. In every event, less is more, and a distilled and focussed book is more likely to captivate and intrigue a new audience than a meandering epic that constantly loses its way. Writing a book is a process, never forget that. Each step in the process is unique but necessary. Don’t mix them, and certainly don’t attempt to skip any steps. Do that at your own peril. JK Rowling has shown the world what is possible if you adhere to the basic processes of the art and craft of writing a good story. So before you attempt your next novel, address the four steps in the writing process: planning, writing, rewriting and editing, and be sure you give each step its due. And who knows? You could be the next JK Rowling.

The print industry is it doomed

    #1

The print industry has been going through remarkable change in the past decade and up until now it has experienced a decline in sale. The industry has given way to other means of communication – the Web for instance. Many people and businesses now conduct their work or buy their needs through the Internet. Manuals and contracts that used to be printed traditionally can now be produced online. But even though people will continue to be attached to their computer screens for the next decade, the print industry is here to stay for a number of practical reasons. The movie industry has somehow helped boost the declining printing business. You are perhaps familiar with the movies War of the Worlds, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the Harry Potter series and A Walk to Remember to name a few. All these blockbuster movies were based on a novel written by celebrated writers who have helped changed the way the print industry is seen today. For a number of reasons, sale of this books in hard or paperback copies have rose to an astonishing level. In fact, publishers of the Harry Potter series have to make another re-run just to meet the increasing demand for the book all over the world. Additionally, although children now are more exposed to computers and the virtual world, they still learn to read and write through books and printed materials. Not until the computer becomes a better way to teach children will printed materials became less useful. This goes to show that printed materials are not going away anytime soon. This is simply for practical reasons: they are handier, they are simpler to use and they offer the best user edge. Although the idea of having everything done digitally is very promising and encouraging, at the end of the day it all comes back to practically. Consider the packing industry. This is one major part of the printing industry. Can you ever imagine a box of chocolate being packed in a computer screen? Certainly not! Hence, as long as there is no other way to do this digitally, printing will continue to exist. As long as there are people and businesses that sees printing as a better option to Web-based technology, print will continue to be alive and kicking. And as long as people consider print as a better and simpler way of having their information accessible anytime they want it, the print industry is far from dead.
